Guys,
Been testing the various roms available for some time now, XDALive, Black, Schaps etc but just can't find a single Rom that allows the phone to function as its supposed to, i.e. Fast, efficient and usable.
XDA Live and Black appeared to be great at first, until I installed TomTom and a few other minor apps, at which point they just slowed until the phone took 2/3 seconds to come out of standby, and when ringing the phone, it wouldn't even make a sound until the 2nd/3rd ring!?
Yesterday I flashed to Schaps and its even worse, before installing ANYTHING extra! 3/4 seconds from standby although it is a great looking rom.
Just seems a real shame, is the phone's hardware the limitation or is there a Rom out there that really does make a good job of enabling the best functionality from the Hermes??

Same-same feeling here. Tried all, still can't get the reliability and responsiveness of original WM5 Jasjam ROM. It's not a rant and of course I can always go back, but it makes me wander never the less..
Edit 15:30,
Well after such a statement I guess I owe some specifics:
- Hermes 100 and 200
- SPL-2.10.Olipro
- IPL: 1.04
- Radio: v1.43.00.00
- Tried the various available RTM versions, much too slow responding, haven't resolved the SOD problem for me
- reverted to what I consider to be the most stable and comfortable release - LVSW 19/5 (elf edition), still experience SOD but apprx. once in 24 Hrs. Still makes the WM6 Hermes unreliable as a phone, since for those unfamiliar with SOD, it means that while actually frozen, the phone looks externaly to be OK and working, respective LEDs blinking. Tried all solutions known and yet some.. drafted to this some heavy dev colleagues but still there.
Frustrating isn't it, perhaps the Hermes just isn't ready for WM6, would be logical as they haven't launched the Hermes OEM with WM6 yet have they?
Cheers, Ash

Can do, how do you believe its better than the rest? Where can I get it from?
Thanks mate!
Click the link on my sig.
My ROM is a graft and is not based on any one m$ hermes build. It has components from a number of different devices.

Sleuth255, you are counted with the serious in my book, so I should definitely do so. At the moment I kind of stabilized my devices (less than a SOD in every 24 Hrs. time frame), and I am pretty dependant on my phone.. but... at same time I've a XDA-dev soul, so I don't count on myself to withstand the temptation to try yours...
However Ash's quest remains. WTF happens with WM6 on the Hermes. No disrespect to those praising it, but if it doesn't work here, it most probably doesn't work elsewhere if you push it to same limits I do.. And where is HTC's RTM. I would expect it's core to be reasonably well, then use it in the kitchen for "our flavours", but apparently RTM is not there yet, or is it RTM ?

Sleuth255, you are counted with the honorable in my address book, so I should definitely try yours, thank you. However... at same time I've a XDA-dev soul, so I don't count on myself to withstand the temptation to try yours...
In any case Ash's quest remains. WTF happens with WM6 on the Hermes. No disrespect to those praising it, but if it doesn't work here, it most probably doesn't work elsewhere. At least if you push the envelope to same limits I do.. And where is HTC's RTM. I would expect it's core to first be reasonably solid, then use it in the kitchen for cooking our flavours, but apparently RTM is not there yet, or is it RTM at all, and if it is how come it ain't published on HTC support site yet ?
Questions..questions... but it's fun, isn't it ?
HTC's core CE/XIP for hermes was RTM as of v5.2.1238 and is quite stable IMO. It's the IMGFS that's buggy.
Hermes has always had issues coming out of standby and this delay is what affects the time the call connects to the time you hear the first ring. I noticed this the very first time I tried my TyTN (coming from a Wizard).
I've always wanted to uncover the specific code that handles this because there's also a nagging bit that forces portrait mode as a workaround for the magnets in the case Because of this, I have to disable standby whenever I'm using my stowaway bt keyboard.
edit: SOD could be solved as well by dis-assembling this code...
Sleuth, I agree with you (again). And you are also very right on RTM (I happen to be somehow..remotely... connected to them people in Redmond, but I shouldn't exploit this subject too much here.....
Anyway it's pi__ing me off quite a lot and the "Israeli Team" has given SOD a good chunk of time to no result. What amazes me is that this is one Huge issue that doesn't ring an alarm at HTC's.. BTW assuming that under the hood Hermes 100 and Hermes 200 are one and the same (so says my favorite CTO), I can't understand how would my JasJam (original WM5 ROM) be bullet proof in respect to SOD, while my TyTn showed SOD and call delay on WM5 as well. Maybe all Hermesses weren't born equal (and I refer to the latest crop, post childhood issues).
I happened to work with HTC and I know them to take stuff like this seriously. What happens here ....
So can we conclude that the Hermes wasn't ever *supposed* to run WM6, hence why all the WM6 roms just simply don't really work very well once you install just a couple of apps? Some without even installing supplemental programs?
I can't conclude that. WM6 works wonderfully on my hermes. I can conclude at this point that the device has some powersave related ideosyncracies that may or may not be software related. This is why I'm interested in your XP with my ROM.

I agree with Sleuth, WM6 works so much better on my TyTn than WM5... In every way.
Ok, the (slight) wakeup delay at phonecalls is there but certainly no more than with WM5. And Sleuth's new ROM is very stabile, pretty fast and with very little memory leaks.
At least it is in my case...
Ive been using WM6 releases for hermes since they first surfaced
my favourites are
Schap's WM6 Pro 3.30c
LVSW (latest June release)
Windows Mobile VI Pro - Black 2.5
I don't use Device for gaming at all
I use It strictly for work, this means:
Organizing my day with SBSH PocketBreeze
Chatting with Live messenger
see the weather news with weatherPanel (Schap's ROM replaced my choice of weatherpanel)
I work with/edit simple word documents on the road and e-mail them
Take many photos and record videos
and also watch big videos 22~50megs in both .wmv and .3gp format
Surely some ROM's were a real pain and unstable
with the above mentioned ROM's
My device Is stable and fast
Reading around thoughts and opinions surely will help many new to the PDA scene and surely will reward them with knowledge and make their WM experience more fun and useful rather than adventurous and experimenting
Definetely my TyTN is more useful fast and stable now with WM6
rather than when It was fueled with WM5
Just my 2 cents

Same here, I'm very pleased with WM6 (currently vp3G). I've installed some apps and its faster and more stable than before. I have no freezes, no sleeps of dead, no lock ups - with none of the Roms.
Programs in use:
Always running:
.) ILauncher
.) PhotoContactsPro
.) BatteryStatus
Installed:
.) Mobipocket Reader
.) SK Tools
.) Vijay's Brighter Screen
.) enAlarm
.) GS Finder
.) Total Commander
.) PocketIrked
My first WM6 ROM was the XDA Live.. then I started playing with the free storage.. created modified XDA Live ROM ( later called "WM6 Brick" because it wouldn't boot for ppl without MFG BL).. anyway.. a week later I bricked my Hermes completely trying to get it working with all BLs.. Then I was out for 2 months.. as my Hermes was being repaired..
When it came back I started flashing it with different WM6 roms.. (I guess I liked it much more when there had been only one wm6 rom available). They've all looked nice.. but none of them have been stable. I don't care so much about the speed.. but I hate when it freezes while I am scrolling the file list in the built-in Explorer.. and this happens with all WM6 roms I've tested.
I guess that at some point it will be stable enough for me to use it.. but as I don't need html-emails.. or sd-card encryption I guess I'll stick to WM5 for a while :/
I've tried:
Custel 2.5
ALL of the Blacks
Elf's 2.1
LVSW
Faria
I am with Custel 2.5 right now and I love it. No sleeps of death here.
I'm running:
SPB Pocket Plus
SPB Weather
SPB Phone Profile
IM+
Today Agenda
MobiReader
Google Maps (Latest Build)
MortgageCALC
After being "awake" for 12 hours, I still have 23.4 MB of memory avail. with normal usage.
I don't do any media on my phone; I don't even have the media net settings loaded to my connections. I use it strictly for business: direct push mail, text message between the contractors, phone calls, scheduling and looking up houses, google search quite a bit and the PIM software.
Perfect ROM for me:
4mb pagepool
HTweak 1.5
Windows Media Player (for ring tones only)
Office 2007
RedEdit
NO Task Manager
Java Manager
Internet Sharing
NO Streaming Media
NO Audio Manager
PocketRAR
The updated file explorer that's floating
NO Live
NO Messenger
Unfortunately I'm not a cook.
Jim
I have tried both the Elf V2.1 and the BlackShadow and both have worked very well for me so far. I have so far only added the following external apps:
1. Ateksoft Webcamera Plus
2. Adobe Flash Lite 2.1
3. Adobe Reader LE 2
I definitely love my phone now even more so than when I first bought it when it came with WM5.
ROM, Radios, Carriers, Phones each has its own benefits, if you put some together they dnt work, you can change one thing it could work.
i can honestly say that i have only had problems with the early blacks, shadow works fine for me, wheras others worship black 2.5.
personally i always use sleuths roms they definately the fastest & most stable (for me anyway!!)
One last tip
Unless you are in the UK dont use radio 1.43 it is designed for the UK and not too good elsewhere

I think my v3.0 *almost* fits your "perfect rom"
IMO it would be useful to compare the new WM6 ROMs regarding the memory leaking. I mean mainly the ROMs with Home Plugin and/or Cube, because they proved to be quite memory hungry.
I think the latest versions should be counted: Tom's B&B 4.3, Meschle's Touch 3.0 and/or 3.01, and Vanilla 2.0, Bepe's build 0.53, maybe Fracoon's 2.2 too. But every experience on any rom regarding RAM decrease can be interesting.
I launch this thread because, as I see, this problem is the weakest point of many cooked rom (and maybe of the official versions too). So, let's say: after a half-day-long usage, without soft reset but running e.g. Tomtom, Windows Messenger, Ms Office, any music player etc. how much free Program memory (RAM) do you have? (Before measuring close all programs and run Hibernate once.)
I konow it's impossible to have an exact picture since every PDA is different, some owner-installed programs can be a big memory-consumer, but anyhow, sharing our experience might show some tendencies and help us to choose the ROM nearest to our needs.
So I begin:
Currently using Tom's 4.3, after half a day of normal usage it's around 18-19 M (from 25). -- IMO it's not bad, I've heard about far bigger leakage.
My previous rom was HTC official WM6 (3.13.405.1 WWE) it also started with around 25 M and 'ended' with 20 M. (but it doesn't have Cube).
cheers,
I've tried with meschel artemis touch 2.1 lite with cube and 3.0 lite with cube.
about 12.5 MB with first one and about 19.8/20 with other.
Great work, meschle!!!
Bye
I had Meschle's Premium Plus w/o cube and it averaged about 16-17Meg. Now I've got the Touch 3.01 and I get as low as 13Meg but I'm also running MS Voice Command which is a huge memory hog. If I didn't have MSVC I would prob still be at 16-17Meg with the programs I have running. The official WM5 P3300 ROM left about 18-19Meg avail on average.
You need to run hibernate!
I have tried different ROMs and found a workaround which up to now is not very convenient but effective: Use "Hibernate" after closing each application oder settings tab. This small app is included in many cooked ROMs, it releases memory.
First thing I do after a soft reset is using hibernate since it releases about 1-1.5 MB and that gave me at best times 28 MB RAM, I think that was with B&B v3.0 GER.
I think it is possible to combine the X-Button with hibernate through MortScript. MortScript is a Scripting tool for WM and can automate certain things, since you have to be familiar with programming and need a lot of patience I still didn't try it.
I don't know if Wisbar is able to perform two tasks when pushing the X Button. Then you could assign it to closing the app and then starting hibernate. Maybe I will ask the programmer if he will produce a version without the window that shows up every time, then it would be perfect.
I assigned hibernate to one of my buttons, when I close big apps I always run hibernat.

Yes, I also often use Hibernate. I assigned it with HButton to teh OK/Close button (first function: close; scond: Hibernate).
I assumed that almost everyone use it, that's why I suggested in the first post that even the measuring should be after closing all apps and applying Hibernate.

6.1 works great with me
6.1 is better in everything you wrote
6.1 will be better
from what I heard, 6.5 would be slower, memory hunger, cpu eater...
hello
WM6.1 more free RAM
WM6.5 more responsive
This is what I can say comparing the ROMs of CV93+Oggi.
Regards
Hi to all.
For me , not exist a rom ok for all.
WM 6.1 is ok for any function but is slow.
WM 6.5 is very fast , but again is not regulary ,
with many bugs,
I am waiting a rom very very beautifull ,
without bugs.
When ????
Bye .......
i found 6.1 is much faster and good ram Management, some of rom like i m using NiAx 40 which is very clean, i have tried couple of 6.5 rom but they are very slow and un stable, i would better stick with 6.1, may be 6.5 requires more ram then TRINITY have.
Hello all
WM 6.1 is in the end and WM 6.5 is in beginning of development .
6.5 is faster , nicer , smoother etc... 6.1 but use 4 or 5 MB of RAM more , my latest wm 6.1 in Ultra Lite has more than 31 MB of RAM and latest 6.5 has only 27 MB and can to be daily use .
Hope this synthese help you .
WM6.5 is BETA but..
Folks,
I think Chanvi gave the best answer so let me just repeat it and add:
1. WM6.1 is at the end of the road. True, there isn't yet a phone that comes with WM6.5 but soon it will start.
2. WM6.1 has an advantage regarding free RAM. However, with some clever tweaks (using kitchens) it is possible to create a ROM that will serve ANY application that runs on WM6.1 to run on WM6.5
3. WM6.5 has more than few annoying bugs of WM6.1 resolved. Original WM6.1 used to have some major issues, such as lock users out with 'wrong password' and other MS crap. It was all fixed in WM6.5
4. The GUI in WM6.5 is great. It takes time to get used to it, and I was between the ones complaining about the change it took from WM6.1 but the naked truth is when i tried to be back to WM6.1 it was bad experience for me.
5. Finger friendly- I hardly use the stylus in WM6.5 So much easier than WM6.1 was.
6. Stability- Sorry to 'disappoint' you, but at least Chanvi came up with a set of ROMs that are too good to be true. not one crash since April (two months) , great memory management (no leaks) and good battery life. It isn't all WM6.5, it is , I think, because Chanvi and Oggi are very talanted. Nevertheless- WM6.5 is , by far, superior to WM6.1
And I was one of the people thinking WM6.5 was too heavy for our trinity..
To get you an idea: I run 3 email accounts (one exchange) , my today plugin is home2 (heavy graphics) and I use iGO8 for GPS navigation, with high resolution and 3D (but no TTS).
And lastly- it makes the phone beautiful. Whenever someone shows me his iPHONE/Samsung/HTC Fuze/whatever with standard ROM, and I show him my cooked WM6.5 on a 3 years old phone (!) it is impressive... and runs as good as theirs, if not better. 3 years in phone years is 21 years in dog years.. LOL.. so much for phones, especially XDA ones.
well apart from the comments above I personally think I like 6.1 better.
Used chanvi 6.5 for 2 weeks, and I can't stand the slow response of the device, especially accessing my SMS (i store lots of em) and it takes more time to load and switch between applications (about 2 - 4 seconds more than when using 6.1).
I even flashed 6.5 onto my friend phone, as to try out the new and latest OS, and he too came back to me after a week, saying please save me and reflash back 6.1 as it's too slow for him.
We are business users hence accessing options like SMS, MMS, and web browser and switching back and fourth between applications should be fast. Unfortunately 6.5 does not provide that. It's fast, but just the today's interface and when clicking start, but when you actually load any application, it will take longer than 6.1 which we can't bare anymore..
In the end, my friend flashed trynnt ROM and I flashed another ROM which uses diamond interface runs on 6.1 and have no speed issues anymore.

Hi neato2u
I'm agree only on thing with you on IE (web browser) is not good in WM 6.5 if you use new IE8 with widgets , it's very slow and lag because our device have not enough free CPU (not ram) .
I use also in professional and business , i don't know exactly how many e mail i have (stored in sd card) but certainly more than 1 thousand with 3 account , Tomtom 7.910 daily use ,more than 2 hours phone (Voip included) by day et... , my rom is a Extra Ultra Full with Titanium + Manila + SPB Mobile as interface , i change interface when in job or wk or holidays . Never problem crash or other , only one thing is true , some app. like "Auto Hibernate" or "Activesync Killer" don't work in wm 6.5 so recently i find and use cleanRAM level3 with settings by run auto all 3 hours .
You can not compare HTCHome interface with Titanium or Manila , of course HTCHome is the lighter interface but older also , you can also install HTCHome in wm 6.5 , it will work better than in 6.1
Regards

Some comments, as you did not mention some crucial info...
1. Have you tried IE6UltraLite ROM?
2. Do you support the phone with any tools like SKTOOLS for memory managment and shadow RAM services?
3. Ever tried opera MINI 4.2? (not opera mobile, don't confuse between the two). IE6 or IE8 are a disaster app, regardless if you use WM6.1 or WM6.5
I am, like you, using this XDA for business. I have no issues with either OS, provided I am taking good care of the installation of the above. Please keep in mind this phobe is not HTC but Dopod (were bought by HTC) and since WM5 there is not much of support for it by HTC. If you intend to keep using the trinity, even if with WM6.1, you can make it more efficient.
If you have installed the full blown IE8 version, yes, I agree with you it is not business oriented. But Chanvi has the lite just for the business side of it.
Besides, if you are really away from a computer and use your phone heavily, making it finger friendly is the main thing WM6.1 is missing. The GUI (and I mean the pull down menus) is what makes the difference for me. I was hesitating a lot with WM6.5 until Chanvi proved me step by step how WM6.5 can give me what i am looking for.
Other than that, the naked truth is a 64M RAM phone is a joke.

I'm agree with almost everything you said, but I think those few MB of RAM consumption difference are critical. I installed CV93+Oggi WM 6.5 OS 21501 and since can't use iGO (I tried several versions, even the new amigo) and it always says "out of memory" after a few minutes in best case. So if you need any RAM hungry app 6.5 is not for you, in any other case it may be the best option.
My impressions are: battery works for much longer, about 10 more hours with low/normal use (no wifi or bt, just phone). Screen and phone perfomance are better, in apps it's the same than 6.1. And I didn't find any incompatible software.
If there was anyway to close CHome, like manilla, we could get a few more RAM.

If you use Chanvi's latest WM 6.5 Kitchen, you can leave CHome and Manilla out completely! BigE is getting up to 29MB free in this way on one of his UltraLites. Without TTS, iGO8 breathes quite well on this.

I certainly do.. my best results were with the 21232 IE6UltraLite by Chanvi. 27M free RAM and 78M free storage. I skinned out M2D and CHOME (I use home2) and I run SKTOOLS to optimize memory. Joel from Pointui has created a home2 file that will send graphics to the storage memory, and on top I am using mToday to switch all home pluggins off before i run iGO. I get 23-26M free RAM (23 if I do not soft reset, 26 if I do) and can run iGO in high resolution and buildings, while syncing with 3 email accounts, get text messages and calls. If you have more need than that, than trinity is not for you. It is a 4 years old device with miserable 64M RAM... we are kind of beating a dead horse here, and Chanvi is able to give it a nice push and keep it alive before Diamond2 is released (I mean 3G supported around the world, not just EU, hard SPL released for unlocking, and decent forum activity to support it with cooks and testing).
The thing is, I have to admit, in order to make the device 'behave' it takes some tweaking and knowlegde, and it is not for the lazy or faint heart user..

first of all...everyone who offers cooked roms did a great job.
but the last months i noticed there are only WM6.5 roms with titanium.
for myself, i made the experience that 6.5 "with" titanium isnt realy made for our little devices. besides that it doesnt really give the comfort like manila does.
sure...at the beginning it seems smooth, but then after u start to work with it more often u notice the lack of "power"
so, is it possibe to try WM 6.5 with M2D insteat of titanium?
or if it doesnt work because of ram...why not just go back to the latest WM6.1 and make it stable and comfortable. after testing several wm 6.5 roms with tianium i went back to joshs V15 m2d, its just faster and easier to use.
just my thoughts, maybe others have the same.
but anyhow...keep on cookin'!^^
I have played with 6.5 a little, and I kinda feel the same. Except, I like a very lite today screen (lite on memory) and the standard 6.1 today plugins have suited me just fine, with the addition of pocket digital clock.
I guess we will have to see what the future brings, maybe titanium (chome) will improve. I'll probably be sticking with 6.1.
And, to me the latest build number (at least for 6.1) doesn't mean a whole lot. So many things can be changed in the kitchen that the build number becomes irrelevant.
ya, it doesnt have to be always the latest one.
but i guess it is just the hype for 6.5 an its titanium
it looks fresh and new, everbody wants to test and use it. and here the desire for the latest stuff comes in. a lot of people forget about the comfort they had with their previous roms (speed and usablitly).
we always have to keep in mind...6.5/titanium is made for another generation of devices...our hermes cant keep up with them anymore and it doesnt make sense to have a pseudo diamond2 which cant be used for daily tasks.
I have cooked a 6.5 ROM with manilla instead and had wayyyyyyyyyyy less memory then when using titanium. I like manilla better but the scrolling with 6.5 is something I just can't live without anymore.
I guess it's 6.5 all the way!
Hi,
I agree with MrDSL that things like scrolling in WM 6.5 is something even I cant live without... And I am on wm 6.5 and there are very good ROMs for hermes dished out by our chefs.. and in my personal experience are stable as any of 6, 6.1 ROMs.. I use them every day for my professional use..
and on the proactive note since the world is going forward.. I guess we should adapt WM 6.5 rather than taking a step back to 6.1; in any case if I would ever go back I'd do so to WM 6 than 6.1 since the later is more stable...
Titanium takes really low RAM... not comparable to Manila - even my small HS++ theme takes more!
For now the best ROM is 6.1 with one of the latest builds (21051/21048) - they're hell fast and rock solid. In the meantime I'm working on the WM6.5 stripped of the honeycomb and Titanium - and it seems really fast and stable! Soon I will release it, too for you, guys

sounds cool!
@ manila issue
ok...it might use more RAM than titanium but its way more usable than titanium.
you have quicker access to main features. and i think that is what one wants...easy to use and comfortable.
of course its just a matter of taste but why should i "upgrade" to something newer which isnt that comfortable and with less speed than my previous version?
@scrolling issue
some guy at pdaviet managed to include a working touchflo into his hermes roms (6.1), without FTouch. i think it was dvha's rom.
M2D it's not for Hermes. I'm sure.
Titanium works fine in WM6.5 if you use only the plugins you need. I don't use titanium because I can't (or I don't know how to do) configure Weather for Spain cities and quick shortcuts to my favorite applications. Until I resolve that issues I use and recomend the old HTC Home.
M2D.....never again....
Titanium....yes...in one or two months.
Hi all,
since I got myself one of those shiny new WP7 I was thinking what I should do with my loved Trinity. I am thinking of using it as a car navigation only for now (since there is no offline WP7 navi soft out there yett). So no phone, data, manilla or whatever needed just the navigation software. Since I always liked the resource hungry igo8 I would like to know if someone has a hint which ROM I should use best. I was thinking of a clean 6.0/6.1 ROM.
Another question would be if there is a way to have igo8 (or whatever other navi software) start right away after turning the phone on?
Thnks for any hints!
I'm not sure about the cleanest ROM. I see mentioned in some topics that tomme45i WM6.1 has a lot of free memory so it should load less stuff or have the plugins more optimized.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=551424
But maybe a better one would be the official WM6 Dopod ROM launched for Trinity. That one shouldn't have a lot of stuff and on the settings you can always disable the stuff that appears on the home screen (messages, appointments, clock, etc) to make it even faster.
About the startup, at least on WM6.5 ROMs you just need to copy the program shortcut from /windows/start menu/programs/iGo to /windows/StartUp/iGo .
Thanks alot for pointing me in the right direction! Going to test those you mentioned
Works like a charm
