after owning the phone for a month and having just had it replaced due to screen/battery issues
thought before i do anything to it i would find out
what is the easy way to back up the full device before altering files for hacks etc (didnt do this first time around)
and how do i stop my contact pics coming up in the albu, photos
thanks for any help
for the backing up thing. You can only backup files and data. So no settings. (maybe with exensive programs) So when something goes wrong you do a hard reset, and restore the data and files. You should backup programs on your PC.
Search the ofrum for: PPCPimBackup. This is freeware backupsoftware that works very well. It backsup you email, sms, agenda, notes and contact. (The files on you SD card won't get lost by a hard reset).
Can't awnser you question ATM about hte contact pics. Don't have the phone, still waiting for the replacement.
I personally use Sprite Backup, which worked very well for me in the past. They have some special for HTC owners right now, so you might want to look into that (http://www.spritesoftware.com/products/sprite-backup-htc-special). I suggest, you try both (PPCPimBackup and SpriteBackup) and see what works best for you.

Why do you want to do that before any tweaks?
In that case just give it a hard reset and it will be back to the first time you booted it.
Take care with backup/restore on different devices.
If the ROM versions aren't the same, you can get strange behaviour with your device.
And even if they are the same, some programs didn't restore well on another (same) device.
SPB backup worked well
But I can't say which is the best, maybe sprite has some other advantages

I'm having issues with my Tilt 2. I bought it used and it does some strange things. Email login pops up out of no where. Can't get the phone to accept any Hot Fixes. Clock numbers on Home Page go from Large to small and can only return to Large if I restart the device.
Think my phone needs a reload. Problem is I'm just not savy enough to do this. Is there anyone in Las Vegas that actually knows how to do this?
Recommendations Please.
Do a hard reset on the phone.
Menu-->Setting-->System-->Clear storage
Make a note of any software you have installed
Do a backup of your texts and emails etc with PIM backup (here on forum)
Do a hard reset. Its really easy.
1) turn off phone
2) hold send and end key down at same time
3) while those keys are pushed down, press the power button to restart the phone.
4) follow instructions on screen
Once reloaded reinstall software you want and restore your stuff with PIM back up. Resync with computer and off you go again.
Once you know its working the way you want it, back it up with Sprite Backup or other utility and next time somthing gets corrupted just restore your known good backup.
Be brave, take a chance. You will be better in the long run. The old teach a man to fish analogy.
Just wanted to say Thanks for the help. It went easier then I had thought. Only thing is now, I went to add the two Hot Fixes for Caller ID and SMS and when I copy them into the phone and execute them, I get an error message that says, these are not compatable with this device.....
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance
which files are you using? There are reports of a couple people having issues. There are some ATT specific files from thier website that I used. They took no problem. The files may already be on the phone if it was used.
I took a look on my friends Tilt 2 and the files show in the root directory as being loaded. I down loaded the AT&T specific Hot fixes for Caller ID and SMS Freeze...Just thought they should be on here...
Thanks
Its time to update my ROM. ive been using what ive got for almost 6 mos now, and like any other computer, its starting to bog. but ive got a lot of stuff on there, yknow? id hate to lose it all.
basically, i need something that ACTUALLY WORKS and dosnt need to be cooked in, supports the rhodium, and let me view the backup later. i dont want to have to reflash my phone to read old txt msgs (use for business, good to keep records)
all i need is my non-sim contacts and text messages backed up, everything else, config and all that, i dont mind re-doing.
anyone got any suggestions?
I suggest using pimbackup. It's simple and it does the job very well.

I never had problems restoring backups. The only disadvantage that i'm aware of is that it does not backup mms attachments.
Hi,
I am using for over a year "Sprite Backup" ! Yes, it's shareware and it cost some $$, but Sprite has an HTC special and includes the "Terminator" program as well.
Very happy with this backup solution.
Cheers,
JCE

i think ive used that one previously. it generates .csv files, right?
trying to restore from that backup is a mess, unless im doing something wrong.
by 'mess' i mean totally not threaded in any way at all. and if you have almost 10k sms mgs sitting in your inbox.....
So my friend has a Dinc and not so much knowledge of phones. i tell her about the awesomesauce of root and she tells me to take care of her phone. so i root it with revoked (not the forever one) and start tweaking. ok, tweaking done - LauncherPro, Swype, Handcent, SetCPU, autokiller, adfree, etc etc. all was fine for about 2-3 weeks until this morning she wakes up to swype/launcherpro/handcent force closing and all her contacts are gone...she said it reverted back to all old settings.
possible update from verizon?
i'm in CT and she's in NJ, so i can't exactly take a look at the phone. any ideas as to what could have happened? she WAS drunk as fck last night.
android market shows no apps in downloads. and unable to search for anything.......
First, it's kind of silly to customize a phone so heavily for a person who has no clue how to support it when you're too far away to support it.
Second, I hope you taught her how to nandroid because it sounds like she's going to need to restore. The only thing I can think of that would fix the issues would be to fix permissions and reboot the phone... I can't really think of any settings that would cause those issues.
crap. well agreed on the first part...second part i should have thought to make a backup when i finished...which i didn't. the few things i did didn't seem like much really.
i think something happened while drunk...which could be anything...but now i'm not sure what to have her do. she lost all her contacts so i guess it doesn't matter if i have to have her reflash some basic rom.

Did she lose the contacts from her Gmail account, or just from the phone? They will be restored if not lost from Gmail when she gets it back up and running.
there's really no such thing as "just a basic rom" nowadays. devs put a lot of effort and time and code into them, what you should do is some research and have her reinstall a STABLE rom . either way there should have been some sort of backup made, lol, otherwise id say you're a ****ty friend and has every right to be pissed at you lol. with that said have her try to get into recovery and restore a backup.

Thanks for the couple of ideas, but like I said, there is no backup to fall back on. The two things I missed while tweaking her phone was the initial backup and showing her how to restore. I'm not new to this, but not perfect.
Past those obvious mistakes, pointed out many times, right now a few things have changed. Astro no longer works either, and she can't reinstall anything because the market is blank. She did get some contacts back somehow. Is there a way to replace the market to fix it?

You could have her try installing alternative markets like applanet...if it doesn't crash on the install or launch of the app...then she should be able to get the ball rolling on a resolution... might I add, applanet is just an example of an alt market... google alternative markets, you should easily find five or six different ones... if that fails... try apktor.....

Have your friend RUU the phone. If they use Google services the contacts will be restored.
She doesn't use enough google services to get everything back...told her to usaa them for contacts at least.
Will a factory reset do the trick? She's prepared for the consequences.

Did you load up Titanium backup for her? How about Backup Assistant?
In any event, a hard reset may fix the issues - just trying to help you save some of her data / contacts.

That only happens if the contacts are Google Contacts, not Phone Contacts. IIRC, all new contacts are Phone contacts by default.
On a more serious note, this sound very familiar to something I ran into while flashing a new ROM on vacation (Note to self, dont disturb a perfectly stable phone while 800 miles away from home!). Everything I tried to run seemed to FC and I couldn't get into the market or an alternative to download fresh copies of apps. I ended up reflashing the ROM, I dont remember if I tried a factory reset or not but ultimately it sounds like a wipe and clean install of a stable ROM is your best friend right now (unlike your current status with her lol).
Hello,
FULL DISCLOSURE: I'm basically entirely a newbie, so I apologize in advance for my ignorance (hopefully I posted this in the right forum), and I acknowledge how many compounding dumb things I've done up until this point to attempt to resolve my problem.
...A few days ago my HTC 10 shut off unexpectedly when the charge was a little below 50% (not entirely unusual, I got it used and the battery isn't very good anymore). Upon resetting it, I found that it took a dump and erased all of my SMS history entirely off of my internal memory (everything else was still intact, contacts, videos, images, audio files, etc. which were also on my internal memory). So, for my first bout of stupidity, I saved about 50 full (18000+ character) notes as rough draft text messages (the contacts they were saved as rough drafts to be sent to were just strings of very long random numbers I made up, and I never sent any of them) and those were what I really cared about. I've done this in the past for even longer and have never had issues with it, but yeah, it was always a pretty dumb move on my part (I had more luck with that than evernote, but I digress..)
So, at this point what I now know that I should have probably done was put it into airport mode, turn off all data, and attempted to seek some data recovery professionals (I care A LOT about these notes). I didn't. I wanted to try to use some file recovery APPs to try to get them back, however most of them required my phone to be rooted in order to give them permission. I know that phone memory is usually written over pretty quickly, but I thought I was out of options.
I decided to root the phone using the "root-htc10-nougat-v278sr5.zip" recovery image and SuperSU. I didn't do my research and didn't know it would erase all of my internal memory, nor did I care much at the time as far as everything else on my phone went (I later realized I had some videos and photos I did want, but at the time I was pretty concerned about just the draft messages alone). However, the fact that it erased all of the memory makes me think it most likely wiped out any possible chance of me getting my old SMS stuff back. Well, none of the Apps or PC recovery tools I've tried have found any of the original lost data (probably overwritten now?) and I think I shot myself in the foot repeatedly.
...So here I am now, far too late, and wondering if there is any possible way that the data still might be there and if there is a powerful enough way to retrieve it? HTC 10 can't be opened as a mass storage device, which means I'm limited to android recovery software(?)
Lessons learned, but I figured I would ask if anyone knew of ANY possible ways to still recover the data?
Htc account on the 10 should back up call logs, sms , etc. Have you tried syncing it back to see if there's any backup to restore? If there isn't any back-up then im afraid there's no way to recover it. Just my 2 cents.

If you chose to backup to google during your setup when you first got your phone, most of your data should be saved. Just setup your phone again after a factory reset or RUU or whatever, and restore the backup during the device setup.
So, my A5 2017 was giving my problems so I backed it up to Samsung backup, or at least I tried. I thought I read somewhere that Samsung stoppped their backup service for that phone, and said to back up using Google. So., I also backed up there.
The thing is, the problem happend while I was away and couldn't get it looked at right away. I thought I was SOL, but I looked at my Google backup and the date is still from before the reset! I just don't know how to tell it to restore the phone using what's in my Google cloud storage.
If that ends up not being possible I did manually save as many files as I could. Even going into directories that the phone said were empty but still would show files if you went down the rabbit hole deep enough. All I really want are my contacts, whcih I THINK I exported to a file anyways, and just as important, my text message history. If I could get back what I had in my Notes app that would be great too, but that's way down the list.
Does anyways know how I would do this? I do see in the Google settings that I can restore the contacts, or so it says, but I looked in the cloud folders and there are 2 zip files that start with "takeout" and then I think a dash and numbers. I looked in them and it definitely has way more then just my contacts in it.
I'm a small business owner and I use this phone for work, so losing all the texts is actually kind of a problem. I actually didn't realize how much so until it happend.
Thank you very much for any help you can offer!
