Hello,
I would like to keep the maximum amount of RAM memory free for device use. If I install all my applications on an MicroSD card, (thus keeping the device's RAM clear), will this optimize performance?
Thanks
You can't install apps into RAM. You have 3 types of memory on your device and you seem to be mixing them up and causing confusion.
1. Program memory - this is RAM.
2. Storage memory - this is flash based memory on your device. The ROM is stored here.
3. SD card - self explanatory.
For best performance, you should install everything into program memory.

Don't you mean storage memory (i.e. ROM)?
You can't install programs in RAM. Program information is stored in RAM when the application is running thats the only time RAM is used. Therefore to conserve RAM make sure you close any active programs after using them. You could disable TouchFlo 3D and get a big chunk of RAM back.
On my Mogul I run a program called "Oxios Hibernate" that helps free up RAM from the crap that grabs it as it stays on over time. It helps a lot, but I still need reboots. On the TP2, it would probably work wonderfully.
Thanks for the reply, but the answer is still unclear.
Where should I install applications for best device performance?
Well, you can't install a programm onto the RAM. The RAM is used when you load a programm.
For example, imagine that you install a programm named "Text Editor". You can choose to install it on phone memory (Storage Memory) or on the SD card.
That does not uses RAM. But when you launch (use) the programm, then you use some RAM to launch it. Well, and then, when you close the programm, it does free the RAM used to launch it (or should be).
It's the same in a computer: you can install a game, which require some hard disk space. But to launch the game, you will generaly need some RAM.
So, you can choose to install a programm on SD card or on storage memory. The difference is that, when you want to launch the programm, access will be a little faster on storage memory than on SD card. But once the programm is launched, there isn't any difference any more.
Well, now, to keep RAM, you just need to minimise the programms runnings (for example, installing a screensaver will uses some RAM, as this programm will always be loaded). To do so:
- Don't install to many programms that keeps running all the time (like S2P)
- You can tweak your system and choose not to launch some services (like direct push, which uses 10MB RAM)
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not an expert.
And sorry for my poor english
Thanks for the detailed explanation, but the question is still open. To make sure we are on the same wave, the device has:
ROM - 512 MB
RAM - 288 (including 32 MB in the 'baseband' according to specs, whatever that is)
SD Slot - Storage up to 32 GB with a Micro SD card I would add
With this information, where should I install applications for best performance? It seems the 512 MB ROM is probably read-only (the operating system should sit here). So if I do not have an SD card, am I forced to install applications in the RAM? I assume I cannot install my applications in the ROM ("Read Only Memory"). My understanding is that the RAM should be kept as clear as possible to allow good performance, and thus programs should not be installed in it? What exactly is meant by "storage memory", the RAM or the ROM?
I am very familiar with PC concepts, but this one has confused me.
Thank you in advance

ROM is like your hard drive on your computer. Also the hard drive on a phone. You can't install anything on your ram.
You install it on your SD card !!
So it looks like the ROM in this device isn't actually Read Only Memory like one would think?

Isn't it ROM, as in meaning it's non-volatile. i.e. if your battery dies, you are not going to loose what's stored in it...
Here's how I do things:
Essential utils like task managers, anything that runs in the background etc, MUST go onto the phone and not a card.
Anything I'd want to have regardless of the SD card inserted also goes on the phone. Media players and so on.
Games and large apps go on the SD where possible.
I also have another class: "apps that don't need installed". Some apps you can copy the install directory and just run the exe after a hard-reset. Only works with one that don't modify the registry much. I've figured out which ones of mine work OK and they sit on a special folder on the SD with shortcuts also set up on the SD card. Just copy the shortcuts into the Start Menu after a hard reset and you are set.
However, the TP2 has a huge internal storage area compared to my previous WM phones. Running out isn't going to be an issue.

it is ROM,
there are several tyopes of ROM. the ROM we are talking about is EEPROM (can be erased and programmed electrically - using software) or some say EEPROM is Flash Memory.
so,
ROM in the device is Read Only Memory (non volatile)
your SD CARD is also a type of ROM (flash memory) but an external one. So, ROM is basically where you store your data permanently and RAM only temporer when that data is in use (open, edited, etc).
Thank you to everyone who responded to my post, you were a lot of help.
it seems these phones dont actually follow the traditional fetch decode execute cycle that a computer does. instead of a hdd there is a eeprom or flash chip in the phone.. the rest of the cycle seems the same. it will be quicker running things from the device as appose to the storage card as the "busses" are faster however if you have loads of apps open yes device will slow down as the ram will be full everything thats happening goes in to the ram before it goes in to the cpu to be crunched. so you can fill your device with apps and it will nto make it slower, it will only be slower if you leave everything running using up all the ram. sorry naff reply lol
and use cleanRAm by htc adics its great!
ROM isn't the correct term to use anymore (it was back before WM5 where the ROM really WAS read only) (unless you were flashing) but is still used anyways. It is a flash chip that has partitions. After the OS and radio and everything is stored in, one more partition is made with all the space left over and that is where you install programs and save things to. RAM is never used to install programs (it was before WM5, but no longer).
use HtcAddicts cleanRam - is works verry well
Nice post. thanks for the file. So if you want to compare your phone's hardware to the equal function of hardware on your PC: ROM is like your internal hard drive; RAM is like your memory; and the storage card is like an external hard drive. Though keep in mind they really aren't the same, just performing comparative functions.
So if you want your phone to respond more quickly, you want as much free RAM as possible. The open applications and all the processes that are running are in the RAM. Limit those and your phone will respond better (by closing unused applications, running the previously mentioned program, etc.). How full your ROM or your storage card are do not effect performance (to my knowledge). However, applications installed on your ROM will be accessed more quickly than if installed on the storage card. So install all the programs you want on the ROM, there should be plenty of space. Put all your big files like pics and music on the storage card.
Hello guys,
This might seem like an idiot question but I totally confused here
My internal note 2 memory says 3.19GB free of 10.4GB. I am trying to clean my space so I plugged the note 2 to my pc on WIndows 8.1.
I selected all the files and folders in the memory and checked their size which summed up to only 3.24GB! I am really trying to find out whats taking so much space. Should I connect my Note II to Linux and check or how do I find out the total contents of thiis internal memory??
Please help me!
Thanks

Well it may be but not in my case as almost all apps I use are either free or purchased properly.

As about this,
This is exactly what I would be keeping as my last option. Essentially wiping internal memory is almost equal to factory reset, something I don't want to do unless I don't have any other choice..
Any way of of checking whats taking the memory without formatting would be great
Thanks

In Titanium Backup app you find the exact memory stats devided in system and internal. To optimize internal mem push as many apps to ext sd as you can.
Besides: From Windows/PC you normally can't see hidden or system files.
For further information (eg more space in system) feel free to ask.

Hello,
Thanks for your insight. I am aware of the Windows dilemma hence was trying to get through using Linux but I could not :crying:
However I am already using the Titanium Backup app.. I have pushed almost all possible apps to external memory however I came across a problem where the majority data and memory are still being taken up on the internal memory by that app. Clearing Google Camera, Chaton and Camera Awesome's data, I almost got a GB in internal memory!
Speaking of this I have run into a very weird problem. :silly:
after rooting, I force transferred many apps to external memory. Since this Every time I restart my Note II its forgets my default launcher
Any idea what screwed this up?

You can't move or force all apps to ext sd, especially system or system related apps, so I recommend to reinstall your rom and try to move step by step, so you can revert back by only changing one app back to int. I remember an app which forces apps to ext and also with that app it is recommended to change quite a descent amount of apps.

Your problem can be related to apps that uses root access - this type of apps leaves a lot of trash even after uninstalling, so I recommend you to use only those apps, that are really needed.
Mine phone memory got piled up like yours...Titanium Backup helped me. Pushed lots of app to ext SD....
Hi all,
I've just rooted and changed the rom of my HOX and to be honest it's amazing how fast it is and the battery seems to last a little bit longer.
Anyway, I am not writing a new thread for that of course. After trying to install several Apps, I've figured out that my internal memory is almost full even if I only have 706mo of apps. I've moved everything I can from the internal memory to the "sd card" and still, it only remains me 1.28gb of free space.
Do you know what's this "Other" folder which is taking me 4.79Gb of space?
Do you know if I can delete some stuffs?
Thanks,
Alex
Hey
Hi,
It shows others which includes space for system partition and kernel and all the system which is stored on your nand memory.
You only get around 2gb for applications
If I helped you hit that thanks button
Thanks for your answer but I know that. I would like to know if I can get clean the space used by the system and the kernel in order to get more free space?

And will be good to learn the search function for your next question all your question is answared on many places just search it:silly:

it's a fictional space that will make you believe you really have 32GB...
its just a dirty trick by htc.
in reality you have 29gb where 2 is the data 25 is the "sd card" and the rest is system.
Hello..
I have htc desire 816 with 8gb of internal storage ....when i bought it,it had about 4gb free of that storage.....which is quite normal.
After buying it, I updated to lollipop 5.1 then i got it rooted......
Lately i've noticed the insufficient internal sotrage,so I've uninsalled ALL the apps and games from internal and external memory, however, that only freed up about 2 gb of the intrrnal storage ....so what is taking all that space despite there is No apps ....I know that the system files are taking some space....but those files only took 4gb when i bought the phone
Now i don't have any apps ,However, there is only free 1.8gb
I tried using clean master, but it only cleaned about 300mb of junks and cache
This is strictly a personal opinion but you should lose Clean Master and anything else made by Cheetah Mobile.
As for your storage issues... You state you've rooted. Have you done a backup? If so, are you sure your recovery is saving backups to the external storage?

Had the same issue. The firmware is in it's own partition with room for updates but some of those files fill up your internal storage as well, they did for me when I updated so the solutions are either use a root file explorer or Titanium Backup app to move some user apps to system apps , use the forum here in XDA for altering your SElinux permissions and enable write permissions to your system partition(WP.MOD_KO) so that you can use Link2SD app to move your user apps to your external SD card or pay to obtain full S off using the Sunshine app and have those permissions plus more enabled at the system level so that you can also use Link2SD app to move user apps to the external SD card.
The last 2 methods are the most used and also require you to reformat your external SD card into 2 partitions using EaseUS PARTITION MANAGER on a P.C. Instructions for doing this are easy and available on Youtube and Google if you want to read them instead. These are really the only ways to help your storage issue other than just not using very many apps. I chose the full S off method and Link2SD but the other works it just alters your SElinux permissions and has to be removed to do stock updates whereas S off doesn't affect stock updates. Only system file changes do like the mod I described.
I also echo the previous posters thoughts on Cleanmaster and most all "task killing" apps. Android has built in RAM management that does a good job on its own of managing memory and there is the on screen square button on the right that shows you open apps and tabs and allows you to quickly close them all out. You'd be better off regulating Wavelocks using Amplify app and Greenify to freeze apps from staying on . Root required and there are paid version but the basics are free in both apps.
I had a brain f**t and misread that you've uninstalled "all" of your apps so the previous poster might be onto something if you've done any TWRP nandroid backups to internal instead of micro storage. They can take up to 2 to 4 gbs just on their own even with compression enabled. If you haven't and even if you have my previous info and advice is still accurate for improved storage space.

Yeah mine says 550 mb total in thumb data but it is not pictures from my camera like the other few kbs are. Can't open it so I wonder if it's some sort of cache for something else. Don't know all the ins and outs of the Android file structure but I do know that when I started flashing custom roms,CM in particular, my internal storage went up due to the lack of bloatware coming from my stock Rom. Good to know this though. Not going to delete it though for now till I find out what it is.

Some Apps, like WhatsApp save pics in .thumbnails to work smooth, i think.
You can delete them, but they will create themselves at the next boot again, i also tried to write an init.d script which deletes them at boot, but it doesnt work.
Also if you create a file ".thumbnails" which isnt writable, the system doesnt give you the space
Ive read something about creating this file before first boot after flashing so it works, but i havent tried it...
Damn thumbnails
Sorry if my english is horrible ^^

Your English is perfectly fine. Better even than some to whom English is their "first" language. Thanks for that breakdown and I bet that's what it is. I forgot about the apps storing their stock images in your phone. I used to love using the app called Pocket until I found that it stores all the saved links and images directly on your phone. I saved almost a full gb by deleting it finally. Great app other than that and if I had a device with more storage I'd still have it on my phone instead of just my computer. This is all why it pays to be curious about your own phone storage and learn how to navigate a good root file explorer.
Since a couple of days I am not able to update my apps anymore. Error message is that there is not enough space left in the internal memory.
The concerning phone is the HTC M8s (TMO-NL), 16 gb, SuperSU, stock recovery, Lollipop 5.0.2, SW 1.10.114.11)
Is there a way I can transfer apps to the SD card? (symlink?) All the big fish (like the facebook app, 400!!! MB, whatsapp etc) are not able to be moved to the SD card, which to put it politely, annoys me deeply. My previous phone I have used for 2,5 years (HTC One X 64 gb) and have never had this issue with a flooded system partition.
Thanks in advance for your ideas!

You're getting your facts wrong. Apps downloaded from the Play Store and other places are not saved to the system partition. System partition is the OS, and the only system apps are the ones that can included with the OS, such as built-in Google apps or "bloatware". The exception if you specifically installed apps as system apps under root privileges, but this is not the typical situation (you'd know if you did it).
Apps are saved in the data partition, and AFAIK, there is no limit, beyond the size of the internal storage. On a 32 GB M8, you have around 25 GB of storage.
It may just be that you need to delete or move to SD some files that are not necessary.

Yes, you are right, I meant the data partition indeed. I will change the OP. Anyway, the data partition is almost full and I've moved everything I can move to the SD already.
So is there a way I can increase the data storage, since most apps tend to store their information in that partition? I would like to sacrifice the emulated Sdcard0 space to increase the /userdata space.
I've attached a screenshot of "df " as additional information.
And yes, I know the Sdcard0 is already almost full, but for that Whatsapp is to blame with their ridiculous impossibility to relocate the media folder, for which I am wondering if I could make a symlink to my actual SD card.
All in all I am rather disappointed in the M8s, if I had know beforehand it would be a struggle for just loading app updates I would've bought the old M8 .
Edit: I've already deleted all the factory delivered bloatware from T-mobile, as far as the google apps (games/books/music/etc.) I am still working up the courage to remove those, because I don't know if it will render my phone with all kinds of bugs.

You should investigate whether there is an MM update for the M8s, and if it supports adoptable storage (its supported on the M8). Adoptable storage would allow you to use your SD card as part of internal storage, and greatly increases your data storage capacity. It sounds like exactly what you need.

Again, you seem to be confused about the system partition vs. data partition. Deleting pre-installed apps isn't going to help you, as it only frees up space on the system partition.
