HTC Touch Pro 2 on Vodafone and their tweaks??? - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Hi All,
I am new here so hi.
I am thinking of getting a TP2 and possibly getting the VF TP2 since they seem to have some good tariffs, better than my current fruity operator !!!
However....
I am very concerned about their version of the TP2 and the mods that they have made to it. Does anyone know what these are like the VF red/white UI.
I am seriously wondering whether it may be better to go for an unlocked version from somewhere like Clove or Expansys but I still need to buy the network access package which apparently costs the same ie around £30/month.
Thanks in advance,
Sam

Apologies. The site was very slow to respond so I stopped the original and resubmitted not realising that the initial one had posted.

You could do what I (and many others here) did, buy from http://www.mobilephonesdirect.co.uk/ .I got an unbranded TP2 on vodafone, rather than the voda customised one that you get when going direct.
Gordon

Gordon,
Thanks for this. This looks interesting. I heard about them on the VF forums although the VF moderators were not too keen, surprise, surprise. Basically one should check very carefully 3rd party contracts. So are the contracts from mobilephonedirect problematic?
It seems to me that they are simply reselling the same VF packages. However if they are a good company with fair contracts then they look good. Also I did contact them seperately about this issue and I got:
"We only do the unlocked version anyway."
So is this an unlocked phone on contract with no mods... ?? Sounds good to be me.
I am rambling now...
Thanks,
Sam

Gordon,
Did you mean to double reply...??
Since you have gone with them, I am really interested in your view of their contracts and of them as a company to deal with.
Thanks,
Sam

Looking into this a little more, it seems that VF try to encourage you to join their £30 / month deal via a free ear piece (~£30 value) and free first 3 months (£90) so a saving of £120 in total....
Hmmm....
Sam

I'd definitely recommend going for Vodafone, not through MPD.
The reason for this is that MDP is more expensive (at least for 18 month contracts), and you don't get the quality support you get with Vodafone.
If you phone becomes faulty within the next 18 months, with Vodafone you'll get a replacement within 24 hours (assuming you're on business tariff, as that's all they are currently offering the TP2 with), but with MPD you'll have to use HTCs support, which means sending it off and being without a phone for a couple of weeks or more.
Also you'll never have any issues deciding who to go to with an issue, as it's all one company, they can never say 'that's the responsibility of the reseller' or whatever.
That's my recommendation anyway, but do what's best for you!

David,
Thanks.
Since you are from VF and have TP2, could you tell me how the VF TP2 differs from the HTC standard TP2. This customisation is the one thing that is putting me off going with VF directly - It may not be too bad.
So as a VF user of a VF TP2 device, what are the differences please.
Many thanks in advance,
Sam

The differences are not significant.
Differences:
- Vodafone branding near buttons at bottom end of phone, doesn't look bad.
- Vodafone branding on the battery cover (overall less writing than HTCs, and you can replace this if you really want)
- FM radio software included
- Red/white colour theme
In my opinion, the theme is ugly, but this will be so easy to change in the future, either when Hard SPL is released, or some other way of changing the theme / flashing original HTC rom is found.
These are the only differences I can see, overall it's not been customised loads beyond the theme.

in the vodafone?

David,
This is very interesting.
I also appreciate your honesty about the theme. Out of interest does this theme replace HTC's 3D UI for appointment viewings, time, weather etc.... that one sees in reviews?
So The performance is the same as the original? But with a VF Flash which you say could be replaced shortly with this thing called Hard SPL. Would the use of such a program not invalidate any VF warranty?
Thanks again,
Sam

Thanks all.
Out of interest is there anybody who regrets getting their phone via VF as opposed to MPD or elsewhere?
Also has anyone got their TF TP2 UI back to HTC's original or is this too early yet?
I am still very split.... although if the theme issue is solvable then I might be persuaded to go with VF especially as they have £120 off plus £100 cashback with Quidco which I would not get via MPD.... which is basically 7 months free.
Hmmmm.... Now how bad is that VF theme??!!!
I am going to ring MPD tomorrow and see what they have to say.... Will be interesting.
Thanks again all,
Sam

I'm going to be getting a VF contract with the Touch Pro 2 as I'm on my third Xperia and I'm sick of it!
Can I just ask, when you turn on the TP2 for the first time, does it give you a warning then begin the VF customizations?
Because if it does you can just pull the battery out then and it won't be VF branded
I know this works on the HTC Universal as I bought mine from O2 and didn't want the branding, can someone test it for me on the TP2 please?

So I'm stuck with the VF branding? Is there a way to remove it without flashing the phone?

Sam,
I noticed the double post about the same time you did, not sure what went wrong!
I can't really comment on MPD as I've been with them less than a week they handled the order efficiently and I've had no issues so far.
I am concerned about MPD being between me and vodafone, but I decided to take the risk. Voda weren't doing the phone when I ordered mine and I prefer unbranded phones to carriers own versions.
I'll update this thread if I discover any problems.

WM6 for Orange M700 UK users

thanks for nothing Orange...I mailed them the other week and got this response.
"Dear Mr xxxx
Thank you for your mail regarding a Windows Mobile 6 update.
Unfortunately, we have no plans to release a Windows Mobile 6 update for the M700.
Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.
Kind regards

Orange Customer Services"
why bother emailing them... just use muns or lvsw's ROMs thats what I do.
ROFLMAO. U are suprised? They told me that they don't even support GPS on it UNLESS it's the Business version and then even then they couldn't tell me concisively if they did or didn't
Ditto
Why are they selling a phone with what is a killer app / kit and not pushing it like hell? Mucho wierdness
But then ig it aint a nokia or SE they are clueless

and yet they push the gps capabilities of the N95 which is basically useless.
Hence my "if it's not a Nokia / SE they really arent interested"
According to coolsmartphone.com, Orange are going to be dropping the SPV name for the phones and sell them as HTC models ... which means that they will be treated as any other manufacturer rather than their own brand
I am a business user so have the GPS version.
I want an official WM6 ROM because I had problems with every single WM6 cooked ROM on my SPV m600. An I tried about 6 of them.
I don't want to go through the hassles of reduced battery life, problems with the phone, having to redo the WIFI, BT, settings etc etc.
I love the look of WM6, the speed and the other functionality but can't live with the imperfections :-(
And yes I am surprise Orange can't be fagged- how hard can it be ;-)
If they go with HTC instead of SPV maybe support for WM6 will be better.
m700 mUn SE is v.good.
mUns SE is pretty near perfect after all patches applied - so I'd assume that the TE is rock solid from the off.
I have less bugs in mUn's SE than in most of orange roms I've used in 4 devices.

I wouldn't hold my breathe if I were you. I heard HTC was meant to be moving away from WM6
oh that's not so good- if they were moving from WM6 to what though?
I just remembered another M600 WM6 ROM problem I had - the infernal no charging from USB issue. It used to drive me mad (how else can you charge a device in a car!
Now I have an Orange stock ROm to go back to I might try mUns SE or TE.
cheers!
TBH I'm amazed anyone finds it a suprise. Orange technical support is terrible. 1/2 the devices they ship don't have GPS enabled the other half do. They refuse to even support the GPS so why would they bother with WM6.

If you don't want this testing stuff, downgrade!
I'm a business user too, but my job is to innovate in ICT. If you don't have time for that like I have, downgrade!
Just wait till there is an official ROM, which will be announced at the official site ... and if it won't come there for free ... earn money in the business and buy a new phone!
duh thanks Stingray ;-)
If you read all of my posts in this thread you'd see the WHOLE point is I want an official ROM!
However tonight I decided what the heck and stuck on mUn TE. So far not anyting bad to report.
I can't change the device name and it didn't want to "resume" easily from - well I don't know what (standyby ??) but the screen went off and took about 10 presses of the on button to come back to life.
As I say I'm a business user- I work in software but I need a reliable phone. It's really bad when the reception is poor or I just get cut off. I'll never go back to a Nokia though!
The resume thingy is the same in both main WM6 ROM, seems to get it's nickers in a twist if you press the resume button toooo quick to offten, ie 10 times in a short whilem cos just as it's about to come on you (we) nget impaitent and press again so telling it to not wake up, after a few press' it ignores you, and waits till you decide what you really want
As for it being buggy etc, I have the LVSW ROM fitted and tbh not had any issues, apart from what I say above. Oh and of course getting all the Orange settings back etc etc, and the power issues there is a cab nocking about I posted it and so have others.

Not all the models, the HTC Touch will be sold as an HTC Touch, but "signature" models will still be under the SPV brand, which I'm guessing is the M range i.e. hermes, trinity etc.

Thats not actually true! It is another case of Orange having such poor CS training, and product awareness, that these rumours get propagated.
All SPV M700s have a GPS enabled ROM (apart from a few early 'demo' samples that found their way onto the market via Orange Shops) but O seem to never have acknowledged the fact, apart from a small insert in the packaging referencing the Orange Navigation system.
Customer Services/Tech Support are so inept that some people have been advised that they need a Bluetooth GPS Receiver for navigation with the M700
WM6 from Orange- won't happen, for marketing rather than technical reasons. Once the later models come along, they will be pushing those for new contracts/upgrades, and ignoring the current user base.
NeilM's post is right on the mark.
I checked with Orange - No Orange WM6 forthcoming - no explanation, but I'm sure its a marketing thing with so many new WM6 devicesstarting to appear.
Good news - I emailed HTC and received an email back -

so not conclusive, but looking hopefull!! (i'm an optomist)
It obviosuly wont be orange branded or have their homeplug, but at least it wont invalidate the HTC manufacturers warranty.
By the way, all Orange M700's did have GPS enabled, bad rumours flowed from poor product awareness by staff and Orange disabling the GPS icon in the connections menu - but thers plenty of tweaks out there to make it reappear.
There seems to have been a lot less support for the Trinity out there compared to rhe TyTn/Hermes even though, if you prefer no minikeyboard, it is a better device!!
If all else fails, MuNs WM6 rom seems to be getting a fair rattle out there and so it looks pretty stable and bug low.

The GPS Icon is a red herring. It is only needed for configuring External GPS devices, or modifying the GPS Intermediary Driver for an internal chip, but the default settings are best left alone.
The GPS Receiver will simply turn itself on or off according to demand by a GPS Application.
Thanks for the info Dave- not quite as cut & dried from HTC as it was after the initial announcement!

The Rumored T-mobile Dash 2

How many of you hope that when/if T-mobile brands this phone it isn't the Cavalier but some entirely new phone?
hopfully not for awhile cuz i just got the dash 3 months ago.
I wouldn't mind the S630 at all.
Where did you hear this... rumour ?
I don't think it will be a Cav, unless the Cav has about double the battery life and is 3G ready. Trying to predict the future from reading Gizmodo/etc. and biweekly Tmobile chattings, I think it doesn't cut the mark for what Tmo US has planned.
However, if they did push it, it would probably get the Cav in widespread circulation enough to get it some decent development, which it currently lacks. Until it is popped wide open, I'm not interested.
So I think the Cav is not the Dash 2. And I think the Shadow 2 will be around looong before a Dash 2. My two cents, now 100% off, one night only.

I dont know what kind of "development" you're expecting for the Cavalier. I mean... it's a standard smartphone... it's a Dash on steroids. What makes it so special that the current applications developed for landscape smartphones, wouldn't work on it ?
T-Mobile in the US needs to step their game up. Our phones out here suck. When I first got my Dash about a year ago I was one of the only people I knew who had it. Now I see it everywhere because they haven't released anything good. Nothing new. Who wants a Smurf looking phone or a the Shadow (looks cheap)? If there is a new smartphone or PDA from HTC I can't wait to see it for T-Mobile. Does anybody know a loophole I can slip through to get my hands on a T-Mobile UK phone without paying $600?

I don't see why people have such a problem with the Cavalier! It's an awesome phone. We all love our Excaliburs...and from what I understand, the Cavalier is nothing but a "next-gen" Excalibur. That's a good thing...right? If the Dash 2 is the Cavalier or isn't the Cavalier--either way I'm anticipating it's release.

I'm not hating on the Cavalier. I've only heard that all the new smartphones Tmobile US is interested in have to have a much longer talk time on WiFi than, for example, the Dash. Since the Cavalier is similarly sized, I suspect it is similar in battery life. And I am not aware of it being 3G, which they have said all the new high-end phones will be.

Well the cavalier ( at least the ones sold in the UK and japan ) have 3g , dont know if its UTMS or HSDPA. but the only complain people have is the battery life on the device. Since it includes a more robust 400mhz proc (made by samsung i think?) and includes 3g It is naturally have a shorter battery life. (unless they have found another battery with more "juice" to offset the extra power and bandwidth)

The Cavalier is buggy and not worthy to succeed the Dash.
http://pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=reviews&id=977
They should have at least kept the rounded corners.
Cavalier is not significantly better
I bought Cavalier a few months ago to be used on T-Mobile network. I ended up selling it and keeping the Dash. Here is my impression:
- The phone did not feel fast despite the processor, because the O/S was not optimized for it.
- Battery drained in 1 day or less depending on usage.
- T-Mo does not have 3G, so internet was about the same.
I am honestly getting tired of the JOGGR. Makes me want to get another phone. However, I like the HTC's and I do not want a touchscreen device.
Thanks guys, for all the insights and opinions on the Cavalier. I honestly thought it would be just as good (if not, better) than its predecessor... I've been playing around with the thought of getting an unlocked Cav from Best Buy's website, but after reading all these posts--I'm not so sure...

Any Images of the VF branded TP2 please...

Hi Folks,
Just wanted to check what this thing looked like as I cannot get to see one, especially the keyboard. All the marketing pictures on VF's site seem to be the original HTC ones.
Also interested to hear how folks have got on with any unbranding efforts now that we are quite a few weeks into availability. I think there are some beta CABS around...
Thanks,
Sam
Look on the vodafone business site at the picture of the Diamond. The TF looks the same as that. Horrible!
It is simple to remove using one cab file that will put the phone to a plain black. You can then use any other theme you like, or part of a theme
Stunno,
Thanks for this. Yes, had a look.... hmm. But as you say it takes just one cab file.
Has the keyboard been "painted" red in anyway or lit up in red or is it the original? Hopefully the external branding is just the front and back logo.
Otherwise are you happy with VF? About to take the plunge from another operator.
Thanks,
Sam
Double post due to system hanging....
Sam, no the keyboard appears to be standard, grey keys with black lettering until it lights up and the lettering glows white and green for the FN button. The only visible VF stuff is indeed on the front and back but is very discreet
Vodafone has been very good. I have been with Tmobile for about 6 years and the signal strength/reception is much better with VF, apart from the odd blank spot, Tmobile reception in rural areas was shocking. Having said that I haven't seen an 'H' yet with VF.
I've uploaded the VF manual for you if you want to take a look its about 14MB. It has several depictions of the branding, but as i say it only takes one cab installation of about 10 minutes to clear it
http://rapidshare.com/files/250000341/HTC_Touch_Pro2_Vodafone_UK_English_User_Manual_v1.pdf
Stunno,
You are a star...... Thanks...
Sam
Stunno,
Just scanned the manual... Very useful insight... and reassuring to be honest althought the theme is a little "blood red".
One final thing.... Have VF removed any apps off the original ie YouTube App etc... No doubt any VOIP functionality might have been nobbled as well ???
Another point that you might have thought about is the upgrade policy of VF for things such as firmware and WM6.5. Apparently they are slow. Do you have thoughts on this?
Just trying to decide between 18 and 24 months contracts now !!!
Sam
That's a good question!
I have no Youtube app on mine, but, then again, I had Facebook integration until I changed themes and now I haven't.
I have read elsewhere that the youtube app had been removed, which is no bad thing as the 'allowance' is only 500MB.
There is also no sign of VOIP although I don't know if it is nobbled or not as I don't use that either. I rarely make international calls and my unlimited landline calls makes up for it
Stunno,
Yes the unlimited calls is very attractive to me as well. I guess it will be a good "hand free" tool as when when talking through stuff on the PC or whatever. I tended to us this a bit with my standard business landline which is now costing me too much, so turning my TP2 over for "hands free" mode may be quite an improvement.
Thanks again,
Sam
Double post...
The VF upgrade policy for software doesn't really concern me. I doubt that I would download it anyway as I always tend to use this site for anything like that.
In a few weeks hardSPL will be available, hopefully, and once the chefs get working on here there will be far superior ROMs available than anything VF can put together
I initially went for the 18 month contract, but the 3 months free and a fiver off my bill swung me to the 24 month one
Stunno,
Thanks for your thoughts... Interesting to hear how other think...
Obviously you are quite a hardcore smartphoner!! How do you deal with upgrading within contract? Do you just wait until the 21st month on the 24 when VF allows an upgrade or do you sell you the current phone and get an unlocked "newer" phone to use on the current contract?
Thanks,
Sam
Keep getting these hangs and thus double posts !!
A long time user yes, but I don't know about hardcore! I just read a lot and take grateful advantage of the excellent stuff that gets shared on here!
I tend to stick with the contract until upgrade time then look around for the phone that I want on the best deal. Apart from when I broke my Wizard, which at the time would have cost more to fix than to buy another phone! I got a great deal from Orange on a 12 month contract with a free Prophet which worked out cheaper than buying the phone!
Thanks. Appreciate the comment.
Sam

Is it supposed to be this way...?

Well it seems everyone is raving about the phone so maybe I'm just crabby, but I just have to ask, all the same, and maybe to have a bit of balance in the euphoria...
Now I'm a massive HTC fan and have had WM since before the days of the steam engine. When the Rhodium was announced I just knew it was designed for me and I have been dreaming about it ever since. Well now I have one, and I'm sad to say I'm a little bit disappointed. Maybe expectations were too high. But I cant help feel that something is missing in the packaging.
Maybe it's just me but don't you think the scratch-shield is tacky? It started to peel off at the corners half an hour after I put it on. And why wasn't the G-sensor activated for the majority of the applications? And the FM-radio. It's there but without an application to run it on. etc. etc.
Now through the wonder of XDA and all of the expertise that resides here all these things are fixable, but you'd think that on an $800 phone this wouldn't have had to be the case. Kinda thinking that Apple would have done it diffrently... Not that I would ever go to the dark side.
Well, all I can say is that I can't wait to have some of the great chefs that have done such wonderful jobs on Hermes and Kaisers (which are my personal experiences ROM flashing) come over here and start fixing all the little glitches HTC seem to have missed.
Now my question is; is ther a Machiavellian plan behind all this or is it just ineptitude? Or am I being overly crabby???
Just my 2 cents worth/M
If Apple had sold it a damned site more would have been disabled out of the box and they would have drip fed you the goodies to keep you spending!
I'm pretty much sold on the prospect of any new HTC phone evolving over time. It is half the fun! But I agree with your point about the screen protector and radio. The protector was appallingly bad but not as bad as the Brando mirrored one that I bought to replace it!
The radio was preinstalled on my Vodafone branded phone and works well, so for some reason HTC must have disabled it on the ones they didn't send to VF
Don't you just love discovering new hidden functions and features? Like my Dopod D810 without GPS being abled when I first bought it, then Dopod released a ROM update to release it and they kept it when HTC issued the WM6 upgrade, all that after someone else discovered how to hack it.
My TP2 came with FM Radio function fully usable, but I found their software was extremely buggy - how about locking to one radio station forever and it wasn't even the station of choice? (released by deleting a registry and restarting the app) May be that's why they removed it for some regions.
Someone else also posted here that the Voice Recorder is also missing on his TP2, so go figure!

Thanks for the verification on why they didn't include the Radio App in the first firmware. I was wondering about this alot. BTW, is that you in the picture?

it is great if you like real keyboard and big screen.
This is my 3rd Windows Mobile phone, and I also had the iPhone 3GS. This is BY FAR the best phone I have ever owend, used, or seen. I'm a picky SOB and do my research before buying anything. This is definitely the best phone, and I will continue to be an HTC customer. They got it 100% right on this one!!
best phone
I bought 2 just to play with.
I have dropped my main one on concrete probably 7 times(not on purpose), got minor dings, but no major functionality issues. flashed rom from SD card and computer probably a hundred times, Hard SPLed it while wasted drunk and still this thing is kickin.
Top notch phone would recommend!
From my point of veiw it is an awsome phone, Try to get it cheap though, as cheaply as possible, because as you probably know htc has the leo out and its only a matter of time for a leo like phone with that 1ghz processor with a keyboard attached. There are plenty of people around asking for it so its bound to happen. So Save some money where you can and buy the tp2 through a carrier and get it through someone who is gsm not cdma so when a new phone comes out you can just pop out the sim and you have a new phone

Great phone, by far my Favorite! It is especially good with a cooked rROM with the My Location Weather in the clock. If you get it through an online retailer (not AT&T directly) with service or as an upgrade you can save some cash.
Try:
amazon
Walmart
NewEgg
can't remember some of the others.

Nothing just use it. Then after your sure you like it Hard SPL it and try a cooked ROM. The stickies in the ROM Development forum will help you once you ready to flash some new ROMs.

What exactly will the roms do for me, and is there any in particular that you would recommend?
Guess I'll be the devil's advocate. My experience with the TP2 is that it's still too slow, whether it's the OS or processor I don't know, but it needs a big boost in speed. I'm definitely grabbing a Snapdragon device when it's available because the TP2 is just a slug.

The stock ROM that came with my AT&T Tilt 2 was actually not too bad at all. I was much quicker and responsive than I was used to on my Tilt 1, even wit it running a custom ROM.
What a ROM for the XDA "cooks" will remove a lot of bloatware from the carriers (trial app that they want you to pay for). This will free up space and resources and can help make you phone more responsive. It can also add feature from the more recent HTC TouchFlo 3D, such as the weather clock. It give you your weather in the clock and with My location service will give your the weather for where you happen to be at the moment. Other nice app included in most cooked ROMs is the Mobile WiFi app. basically allow you to turn you phone into a wireless access point.
I'm using this ROM currently:

I'd honestly say the Touch Pro2 is the best mobile device I've ever had (you can see my past devices in my signature). The screen and keyboard are the best part about the TP2, but the whole thing is near perfect. Whether you're new or old to the Windows Mobile scene, I'd say this is an excellent device which you should most certainly consider.
Hey thanks guys for answering my questions, and thanks lowteckh for giving me another opinion on the matter but, Im getting a new phone in the next two weeks and I'm sure the snapdragon will not come out by then so it will have to be the TP2.
If you particularly want a phone with a hard QWERTY keyboard that runs Windows Mobile then you should check out the Samsung B7610 (a.k.a. Omnia Pro). If you don't want a physical keyboard then you probably don't want a TP2.
There are already Snapdragon-powered devices on the market: the Toshiba TG01, and Acer F1 (a.k.a. NeoTouch) both run Windows Mobile. HTC's own HD2 will be available from T-Mobile UK on Monday. (Of course none of them have physical keyboards).
If you're in America, and you think you don't want Windows Mobile, then the Motorola Droid is worth checking out. The Palm Pre and iPhone 3GS are also worth a look.
Thanks for all the feedback guys, and I like that keyboard on the samsung, it looks solid, but im not a samsung fan . I purchased a Sprint TP2 yesterday and should be getting it soon, Im very excited

I have both the Moment and TP2 I have to say I love the tilt feature of the TP2 the moment has some battery issues and wifi is quirky, broswer are not good, but the App store is awesome. Tp2 best features are automatic profiling and Wifi Router, serving 3g speeds to my friend's Iphone. You made a great choice.
