Any Images of the VF branded TP2 please... - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Hi Folks,
Just wanted to check what this thing looked like as I cannot get to see one, especially the keyboard. All the marketing pictures on VF's site seem to be the original HTC ones.
Also interested to hear how folks have got on with any unbranding efforts now that we are quite a few weeks into availability. I think there are some beta CABS around...
Thanks,
Sam

Look on the vodafone business site at the picture of the Diamond. The TF looks the same as that. Horrible!
It is simple to remove using one cab file that will put the phone to a plain black. You can then use any other theme you like, or part of a theme

Stunno,
Thanks for this. Yes, had a look.... hmm. But as you say it takes just one cab file.
Has the keyboard been "painted" red in anyway or lit up in red or is it the original? Hopefully the external branding is just the front and back logo.
Otherwise are you happy with VF? About to take the plunge from another operator.
Thanks,
Sam

Double post due to system hanging....

Sam, no the keyboard appears to be standard, grey keys with black lettering until it lights up and the lettering glows white and green for the FN button. The only visible VF stuff is indeed on the front and back but is very discreet
Vodafone has been very good. I have been with Tmobile for about 6 years and the signal strength/reception is much better with VF, apart from the odd blank spot, Tmobile reception in rural areas was shocking. Having said that I haven't seen an 'H' yet with VF.
I've uploaded the VF manual for you if you want to take a look its about 14MB. It has several depictions of the branding, but as i say it only takes one cab installation of about 10 minutes to clear it
http://rapidshare.com/files/250000341/HTC_Touch_Pro2_Vodafone_UK_English_User_Manual_v1.pdf

Stunno,
You are a star...... Thanks...
Sam

Stunno,
Just scanned the manual... Very useful insight... and reassuring to be honest althought the theme is a little "blood red".
One final thing.... Have VF removed any apps off the original ie YouTube App etc... No doubt any VOIP functionality might have been nobbled as well ???
Another point that you might have thought about is the upgrade policy of VF for things such as firmware and WM6.5. Apparently they are slow. Do you have thoughts on this?
Just trying to decide between 18 and 24 months contracts now !!!
Sam

That's a good question!
I have no Youtube app on mine, but, then again, I had Facebook integration until I changed themes and now I haven't.
I have read elsewhere that the youtube app had been removed, which is no bad thing as the 'allowance' is only 500MB.
There is also no sign of VOIP although I don't know if it is nobbled or not as I don't use that either. I rarely make international calls and my unlimited landline calls makes up for it

Stunno,
Yes the unlimited calls is very attractive to me as well. I guess it will be a good "hand free" tool as when when talking through stuff on the PC or whatever. I tended to us this a bit with my standard business landline which is now costing me too much, so turning my TP2 over for "hands free" mode may be quite an improvement.
Thanks again,
Sam

Double post...

The VF upgrade policy for software doesn't really concern me. I doubt that I would download it anyway as I always tend to use this site for anything like that.
In a few weeks hardSPL will be available, hopefully, and once the chefs get working on here there will be far superior ROMs available than anything VF can put together
I initially went for the 18 month contract, but the 3 months free and a fiver off my bill swung me to the 24 month one

Stunno,
Thanks for your thoughts... Interesting to hear how other think...
Obviously you are quite a hardcore smartphoner!! How do you deal with upgrading within contract? Do you just wait until the 21st month on the 24 when VF allows an upgrade or do you sell you the current phone and get an unlocked "newer" phone to use on the current contract?
Thanks,
Sam

Keep getting these hangs and thus double posts !!

A long time user yes, but I don't know about hardcore! I just read a lot and take grateful advantage of the excellent stuff that gets shared on here!
I tend to stick with the contract until upgrade time then look around for the phone that I want on the best deal. Apart from when I broke my Wizard, which at the time would have cost more to fix than to buy another phone! I got a great deal from Orange on a 12 month contract with a free Prophet which worked out cheaper than buying the phone!

Thanks. Appreciate the comment.

Xda IIs is a disappointment

I've been using a PDA since the days of the Apple Newton! When I bought the Xda IIs recently in Malaysia, I thought I could finally travel light without my camera, iPod and phone. Sadly that has not been the case. My Xda hangs all the time, is unable to answer calls at times, sigh...
So I've spent the last 2 weeks (since I bought the Xda) trolling all sorts of forums looking for solutions. So do we blame Microsoft, HTC or O2? I think that it is reasonable to expect something that works as advertised but I guess not all companies have the same commitment to customer satisfaction.
I know I won't buy anything that comes from HTC again.
I think it is probably MS that should be blamed in this instance as the mics on the II/IIs/IIi have always seemed to work fine for voice recording and even on speakerphone so surely this is a software issue?
Having said that O2 do an incredible job of burying their heads in the sand with regards to the faults that we all nknow exist and it would be reasonable to expect HTC to actually test the phone software on their devices and fix the problem.
So lets just blame them all for bringing us all a package that so nearly is a dream convergence gadget and yet just manages to drop the ball at the last moment!
I have to disagree, what other device gives you Phone/Organiser/Video player/MP3 player/SatNav/Camera (still and video)/Email/Mobile Office document handling etc..etc..
OK so it's not perfect and admittedly the O2 stuff is pants but I have removed all that.
To be honest apart from the odd reset every couple of days I don't really have any problems with mine.
Hey, I even like the keyboard!!!
Perhaps I've just been lucky so far!
I suppose I will have to do what everyone is doing and tinker with the ROM, etc until it's right. You guys have certainly been very helpful as the site offers advice that you could never possibly find with support at O2. I do wonder if the HTC or O2 people actutally read these posts and feel guilty for not getting everything right for us
Don't disagree on the IIs being a cool piece of kit, I honestly would have to resort to murder if someone took mine off me but I just wish O2 would admit the problems with it as a phone & put some energy into fixing it instead of bringing out a ROM update which seems to have merely added more useless rubbish to O2 Active & moved the top bar icons around.
If the phone worked properly I would be ordering another 15 at work straight away!

I think they are working on fixes. But software development and testing takes a lot of time.
One O2 person once told me they could take the Imate approach - pitch out a new ROM as soon as HTC have it, and let customers test it, or they could wait and do it themselves.
1.31 is really not that bad, but I guess I don't stress my IIs.
The update isn't "bad", just not noticeably better than the launch ROM (once Bt bld 3500 is installed).
O2 don't even recognise the dodgy phone quality as a known fault. The testing arguement is just a cop out on there part as it's been an issue since the Xda 1, all 3rd party software companies seem to be able to patch/upgrade their software within 1-2 months of a new device release!
I just dont understand why people dont take advantage of the 14-day, or even sometimes 28-day, money back quarantees that all retailers/suppliers provide! People spend ages on informative forums like this one trying to sort out problems and sharing opinions so why not visit these forums before making a purchase? I dont really think manufacturers like HTC or Microsoft can be blamed as they're trying to provide a working environment within hardware/software with technology that is available NOW. Unless people are willing to wait/ponder for another year or 2 before anything that is remotely 90% stable as a pda/phone/mp3 player/camera then the IIs is as good as it gets.
IIs is just not as good as I think. Twice in a week cannot hear each other when dialing a call, but soft reset can solve to problem. Just really want to get back to confidence of reliance. I always feel people cannot contact me even when my phone is always on.
I have not installed any program relating to phone.
May be I should change back to a VGA PDA with bluetooth connecting to a more reliable normal phone, or just change a compaq.
IIs is a phone PDA but cannot dial and receive call sometimes.
Although it's sad, i'm glad to see it's not just me that has the can't hear amd answer calls problems.....I've had nothing but grief with my Xda2s. Thing is it does everything I want and stuff I can't get from any other phone.
Seems like you just have to put up with the problems if you want the most advanced kit
This is all about creating devices to keep shifting boxes, they rely on you wanting the latest piece of kit, it has always happened, flawed devices rushed to market to fulfil a demand created by the people marketing the devices and making all the promises. I have an xda 1, I have tried xda 2, ipaqs etc but I find this phone is reliable, allows me to add software in rom and it does everything I need it to do, I dont need a camera/bluetooth/wireless, I just need a phone/organiser/navigation system that works. I recently posted this topic.

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye.

Well, it's been fun.
It was renewal day this weekend, here in the UK as many of you will know all our handsets are subsidised by the network operators. Therefore every so often we have the chance to "upgrade" our handsets, it is a merry dance. Once "out of contract", we can change operators, switch price plans, and get a new handset for "free" or a combination of any of these. It can all be rather confusing, but the long and the short of it is that I can get a shiny new piece of kit, so it's great.
Anyway, I've had the vario II on t-mobile in the UK for one year and now it's been chopped so I thought I'd leave my thoughts. It was good. Obviously I flashed it with jasjamming and more recently schaps plus several others. I reckon I flashed it probably 50 times, reinstalled settings and apps, a compulsive tinkerer I suppose!
Pros...
Full keyboard
High Speed Data on t-mobile was good and genuinely useful
TomTom 6 (with ext. gps receiver purchased on ebay for 30 quid)
Useable web browser (just)
Customisable with firmware flashing!
Amazing forum here full of helpful people
Cons...
BATTERY LIFE (it's appalling, there is no getting away from it)
Heavy as a hod of bricks
Form factor (too big)
------
So what did I go for...
Nokia 6120 Classic.
wtf nokia 6120?!
Nothing like going back to the dark ages
you should have held out for a couple of months and got one of these
http://www.htc.com/product/03-product_htctouch_dual.htm
I myself have bought a new N95 8GB as my second phone.
Bingobob,
Good luck to you. You made the choice you want and that's all that matters. Never quite sure why people think that what they would buy/get is what everyone else should buy/get!
What did you do with the t-mobile device then? Sell it or is it up for sale?
WB
that's the thing, not sure. Flash it with something I suppose and/or use it as a TomTom or ebay it. not sure.
Well if you fancy offloading it and its not too expensive, PM me. I am assuming its in good condition? Also assuming that its unlocked, etc, and you have all the bits for it?
Cheers
WB
It;s also for me the end..
I bought a Nokia N95.
Ciao, Good Bye
Each to their own. Personally I have to stay with touch screen phones... from here it will be the Kaiser or some variant down the line...
Same here, I love touch screens.
Although I'm very happy with my hermes I'm waiting for the the touch cruise.
Well, I'm waiting for a 3G iPhone, no more WM6 device I think.
Same here, when there's a good offer for the iphone I'll ditch the HTC. But as for 3G, that's only a vague rumor, I wouldn't count on it.
I could never go back to a non-Windows phone.
Especially for a Nokia or an iPhone.
I've played with various Nokias over the years and I think that they are the worst mobiles out of any I've ever touched.
As for the iPhone, over-hyped, over-priced, and under-developed.
I'm HTC's ***** now.

They have to make one with 3G or it will not sell in Europe. Also needs mms.
i switched to IPHONE. and i am very stisfied.
i watched this forum for quite a while, but however you will patch the hermes, it will never come even near to the iphone. everybody tries to construct iphone-like UIs. so why not take the original one?
peter
I've moved from my TyTN to an iPhone. I can't see myself going back to the TyTN anytime soon either.
iPhone ist great for design (friggin awesome btw ) and "OS" only (included internet browsing) it's really neat and user friendly.
Otherwise all the rest is total crap, most of the time technology wise
No 3G (TyTN has 3G+) a heresy for a phone that want's to be "multimedia"
Camera 2megapixel (same as TyTN, crap for both )
Bad autonomy (i'm connected on 3G with BBC on all the time for straight 34h without any problems)
No email downloading possible or push mail
So if apple re-considers and brings out a phone that has all those abilities yeah I would gladly change. Moreover, BBC or something equivalent is for me top priority
what do you think about the new htc touch cruise...?
The Iphone is personally not for me. I want to customize the phone when I want to.
Also no 3G is really a deal braker for me.
As to the UI I admit MS has something to learn from Apple but other then that no thank you.

That's the cool thing, you actually can. What interests me and has drawn me to WM was the ability to fiddle with it, do a bunch of hacks and tweaks etc. However, while the thing is very flexible and powerful it's "unusable". 3 seconds to exit from sleep, up to 5-10 after opening the keyboard to let it rotate screen and become responsive again, ...
Once you've tried internet browsing on the iPhone / iPod touch you just realise that WM's IE even with addons is pretty much the worst thing you could think of, only to be used in last resort, while I can be nearly as effective on the iphone than on my PC...
Guys are developing apps for the iphone at the same rate than here on WM6, and having a full Unix-based OS allows for even a LOT more possibilities than a mobile Windows version...
The lack of 3G is indeed a pain. But then, when I use it on my HTC it's by using it as a modem for the laptop, as there's no way to actually make use of it on the device itself...
If there was an official news saying that the European one would have 3G I'd wait. But I'm not dreaming and know there is VERY little chance. We'll know soon, as France will have them in a few days. But for now, the imported ones are selling like hot cakes, suppliers are getting out of stock all the time and prices go up as they have difficulties sourcing them. So I don't think not having 3G will bother anyone. Especially with the sky-high prices for mobile internet around Europe.

decision time

been researching for while for my first smart phone, and had it down to the TP2, N97 or new i phone when out
but looking at the latest reviews the TP2 looks awesome
bit wary as i have never had a WM device, but i am told you can put also sorts of apps on and hack/customise what ever you want
i have been with 3 in the UK for 6 years but my contract is up and im getting my PAC, whats looking like the best deal in the UK
light talk/text maybe 300of each but defo need unlimited web acces
also is there any limit to the SD card it will take (take it is is micro sd)
thanks for any help
If you've never used WM, you're in for a real treat, or a real hassle, depending on whether you like using a device, or making the device yours (and then using it, of course).
The customization part is absolutely true; it is possible to customize the living crap out of a WM device, with whatever hacks, applications, custom ROMs, etc., which is why I personally find WM so appealing. Plus, if you buy the TP2, you have one of the largest unofficial smartphone support communities (XDA-Developers) behind you.
The Touch Pro2 has a MicroSDHC slot, which will, theoretically, take SDHC cards up to 32GB. I've only seen cards up to 16GB as of now, but it's inevitable that a 32GB one will come from some manufacturer. If you need a MicroSD card, I hear that there are amazing deals on eBay (buy from well rated sellers, there are A LOT of fake memory cards online).
If you would like to learn more about this device, you might want to take a look here. It's a review which speaks quite highly of the TP2. And lastly, I'm in the US, so I don't know about UK deals, prices, carrier plans, etc., but you might try the Prices around the World thread for more info. All the best, and welcome,
Dave
yes exactly what he said. the beauty of WM is your ability to customize it but you will find virtually all meaningful functional on WM as you will find on an iphone. What i mean by meaningful is you will not find stupid apps like a zippo lighter haha. WM is for productivity so if you have a need to keep connected via email, messengers, office functionality then there is absolutely no other choice. I personally i will never own anything but WM unless something major changes in the game. BUT, you need to expect to customize or get the desire too because that is a major part of the fun
thanks for all the info , sold to the man looking for a new smart phone
i love tinkering with my pc and software etc so i have no doubt with a bit of reading and coaching etc i will love WM, as you zippo lighter or ifart, yeh funny for about 2 seconds then what
i will start looking now for deal on contract
forgot to mention i want to be able to listen to my local radio station over the web , do thi on my pc using real player, would there be an app for that ( god i sound like a bloody i phone advert)
There is a realplayer mobile, which you can get free here, but you have to register. Make sure you pick PocketPC for Device if you do choose this methond. Alternately, you might want to try the excellent, and also free, Kinoma Freeplay. It has a giant database of radio stations, videos, etc., and all for free. Hope that helps,
Dave
thanks
im defo getting one , was all but waiting for the N97, but its grahics look like cartoons compared to the pro2, its keyboatd is not as good, and ovi srore sucks by all accounts.
like the T mobile deal of web and walk for £30 a month on 12 month and £113 for the phone, BUT i like vodafones no roaming charges but they have no good deals for 12 month contracts
anything will be better than my viewty

yeah, the touch pro 2 was going to have a built in radio, but they took that out, if you want you could check out the diamond 2, the screen is a bit smaller, its thinner, doesn't have a keyboard, but has a better camera, it has a radio, and its lighter weight
no i want a keyboard so web radio is fine
my mission tomorrow should i choose to accept it is
get my PAC code from 3 (so thats half the day gone)
then get me a Pro2
just got my account cancelled with 3 and getting my pac code , have 30 days to use it, when do you think we will start seeing , the likes of vodafone, etc selling the pro 2 direct, i want to be able to haggle a good 12 month deal out of them, like the T mobile 12 month deal but i get better coverage off vodafone

HTC Touch Pro 2 on Vodafone and their tweaks???

Hi All,
I am new here so hi.
I am thinking of getting a TP2 and possibly getting the VF TP2 since they seem to have some good tariffs, better than my current fruity operator !!!
However....
I am very concerned about their version of the TP2 and the mods that they have made to it. Does anyone know what these are like the VF red/white UI.
I am seriously wondering whether it may be better to go for an unlocked version from somewhere like Clove or Expansys but I still need to buy the network access package which apparently costs the same ie around £30/month.
Thanks in advance,
Sam

You could do what I (and many others here) did, buy from http://www.mobilephonesdirect.co.uk/ .I got an unbranded TP2 on vodafone, rather than the voda customised one that you get when going direct.
Gordon
Gordon,
Thanks for this. This looks interesting. I heard about them on the VF forums although the VF moderators were not too keen, surprise, surprise. Basically one should check very carefully 3rd party contracts. So are the contracts from mobilephonedirect problematic?
It seems to me that they are simply reselling the same VF packages. However if they are a good company with fair contracts then they look good. Also I did contact them seperately about this issue and I got:
"We only do the unlocked version anyway."
So is this an unlocked phone on contract with no mods... ?? Sounds good to be me.
I am rambling now...
Thanks,
Sam

Gordon,
Did you mean to double reply...??
Since you have gone with them, I am really interested in your view of their contracts and of them as a company to deal with.
Thanks,
Sam
Looking into this a little more, it seems that VF try to encourage you to join their £30 / month deal via a free ear piece (~£30 value) and free first 3 months (£90) so a saving of £120 in total....
Hmmm....
Sam
I'd definitely recommend going for Vodafone, not through MPD.
The reason for this is that MDP is more expensive (at least for 18 month contracts), and you don't get the quality support you get with Vodafone.
If you phone becomes faulty within the next 18 months, with Vodafone you'll get a replacement within 24 hours (assuming you're on business tariff, as that's all they are currently offering the TP2 with), but with MPD you'll have to use HTCs support, which means sending it off and being without a phone for a couple of weeks or more.
Also you'll never have any issues deciding who to go to with an issue, as it's all one company, they can never say 'that's the responsibility of the reseller' or whatever.
That's my recommendation anyway, but do what's best for you!
David,
Thanks.
Since you are from VF and have TP2, could you tell me how the VF TP2 differs from the HTC standard TP2. This customisation is the one thing that is putting me off going with VF directly - It may not be too bad.
So as a VF user of a VF TP2 device, what are the differences please.
Many thanks in advance,
Sam
The differences are not significant.
Differences:
- Vodafone branding near buttons at bottom end of phone, doesn't look bad.
- Vodafone branding on the battery cover (overall less writing than HTCs, and you can replace this if you really want)
- FM radio software included
- Red/white colour theme
In my opinion, the theme is ugly, but this will be so easy to change in the future, either when Hard SPL is released, or some other way of changing the theme / flashing original HTC rom is found.
These are the only differences I can see, overall it's not been customised loads beyond the theme.

in the vodafone?
David,
This is very interesting.
I also appreciate your honesty about the theme. Out of interest does this theme replace HTC's 3D UI for appointment viewings, time, weather etc.... that one sees in reviews?
So The performance is the same as the original? But with a VF Flash which you say could be replaced shortly with this thing called Hard SPL. Would the use of such a program not invalidate any VF warranty?
Thanks again,
Sam

Out of interest is there anybody who regrets getting their phone via VF as opposed to MPD or elsewhere?
Also has anyone got their TF TP2 UI back to HTC's original or is this too early yet?
I am still very split.... although if the theme issue is solvable then I might be persuaded to go with VF especially as they have £120 off plus £100 cashback with Quidco which I would not get via MPD.... which is basically 7 months free.
Hmmmm.... Now how bad is that VF theme??!!!
I am going to ring MPD tomorrow and see what they have to say.... Will be interesting.
Thanks again all,
Sam
I'm going to be getting a VF contract with the Touch Pro 2 as I'm on my third Xperia and I'm sick of it!
Can I just ask, when you turn on the TP2 for the first time, does it give you a warning then begin the VF customizations?
Because if it does you can just pull the battery out then and it won't be VF branded
I know this works on the HTC Universal as I bought mine from O2 and didn't want the branding, can someone test it for me on the TP2 please?

So I'm stuck with the VF branding? Is there a way to remove it without flashing the phone?
Sam,
I noticed the double post about the same time you did, not sure what went wrong!
I can't really comment on MPD as I've been with them less than a week they handled the order efficiently and I've had no issues so far.
I am concerned about MPD being between me and vodafone, but I decided to take the risk. Voda weren't doing the phone when I ordered mine and I prefer unbranded phones to carriers own versions.
I'll update this thread if I discover any problems.

Can't Decide: HTC HD vs HTC Diamond 2 vs HTC Pro 2 vs HTC Hero?? stunno?

I cannot for the life of me decide which HTC phone to buy, previously I've had the following:
O2 XDA - Decent at the time
Blackjack II (Samsung) - decent phone
HTC TyTN II - Awesome business platform but too bulky
Nokia E71 - Best of the lot but hated Symbian OS (missed Win Mobile)
I want to buy one of the new HTC phones but I cannot for the life of me decide which one, it needs to last me a good 18 months and something I'll settle with and enjoy everyday I use it, stuff I'll be doing with it:
1. Emails - Googlemail, Microsoft Exchange, Hotmail
2. SMS - Will really need an unlimited SMS contract
3. MMS
4. Decent Facebook/Twitter/LinkedIn integration
5. Opera browser
6. Windows Mobile 6.5 (looks great)
7. Live messenger
8. Movies
9. MP3/Music
10. PDF's/Docs/Powerpoint (view only, not much editing)
11. Remote Desktop/Putty in worst case scenario
12. Shared internet
Ok what do you guys think?
Stunno I know you asked in another thread about the TP2, what do you think about it honestly now the novelty has worn off (if it has!)?
I cant imagine the Diamond 2 being up to the task of loads of typing, but I really like the look of it, but the more I look at what I need the TP2 ticks every single one of those boxes.
At the same time I'm loving the look of the HTC Hero (android) and would wait for that if it could also tick the above!
Damn this is hard to choose.
Also what the best place to get this phone in the UK? I was thinking MPD, is it worth phoning Vodafone after I have bought one to try to improve the contract? (I think some of you guys have done it)
But ultimately which damn phone should I buy! lol cheers
Gonna get one ordered tonight hopefully if I can decide.
Doubt you'll get any bad feedback in here about the Rhodium.
As far as I can tell everyone is extremely happy with theirs so far (par the odd faulty unit owners )
By far the best HTC Device I've ever owned (Par my Uni but it's a very close call)
Read through Shingers thread (if you haven't allready), it really is a stunningly impressive work of art, the hardware and OS integration is a first for HTC, the stock Rom is amazing, the screen is bright, vibrant and crystal clear, the keyboard has nicely spaced well sized keys (although not as good as Unis) and the tilt function feels much more solid than the Kaiser.
Forget the Topaz, the Rhodium blows it away
Cheers,
Beasty
I cannot make your decisions for you but my thoughts so far are:
Looking back over my Winmo phones, the one that I remember most fondly is the Wizard (Tmobile Vario). I loved that phone! Don't know why, it was big heavy and slow, but it didn't seem to matter at the time (I was gutted when I dropped it on a concrete floor and shattered the screen)
The TP2 is better in every way than the Wizard, and is the best Winmo phone that I have used, although it isn't perfect yet. I have a Vodafone branded phone and have had a few niggles due to the branding, or rather due to the removal of the branding. Oh and I have other niggle, my email always shows a new email even when there isn't one!
My only criticism would be that it is BIG! Which may be just because I have upgraded from a Diamond, which was tiny. If they could get the screen, keyboard and battery life in the Diamond's form factor I would sell one of my kids for it! (Actually I wouldn't. It would take two of them to get the phone )
I have only tried a few of the applications/uses that you have listed
1. Email, Exchange, Gmail work perfectly
8. Divx TV episodes work fine with Coreplayer
9. Only used the TF3D player and have had no problems at all (I don't mind the stock headphones, I must have funny shaped ears)
I've had a play on the G1 and am not a fan of the OS, yet, it seems thrown together somehow. But then again I'm not a great fan of Linux either for similar reasons
I think my Voda contract worked out cheaper than MPD (although I have the dreaded branding)
My advice?
Go to a Vodafone shop and try one! If you can live with the size then this seems to be the best phone out there at the moment
Really interesting question....
I would add, if you are LUCKY enough to find a shop that has a TP2. I went looking today, and
a) VF Business Centre: No demos, only to order.
b)Orange: No Stock yet although not discrimination tween business and personal customer.
c) T-Mobile - Nothing yet; End of July.
I am also looking for a professional device with very similar reqs to yours. I was looking at the Tytyn11, but took too long over it and so the TP2 seems a logical choice. However it is VERY NEW and it still has s/w compatibility issues like LogMeIn support etc. I have heard some of the issues are related to the high res screen. However, having talked to a number of people the TP2 does seem to be a de facto business device so I am thinking that if I am going to commit to a 24 month contract then I am better off doing it with something like the TP2 which I can grow into as the problems get solved rather than get something that will be obsolete asap.
I have also looked at MPD and fine and dandy if you want a unbranded phone, but the deal is not as good as VF's IMO especially when quidco included. Also I question whether I would get a replacement mobile as quickly from HTC as VF. Perhaps I would ......
And finally the keyboard.... If you need this then that rules out a lot of options. I do.
Just thoughts, and best of luck matey...
Back to my glass of wine in the courtyard enjoying the warm sun go down !!!
Sam
Thanks all
Stunno, appreciate you replying to my questions.
I'm still undecided, I would love to buy the TP2 and get it tomorrow but I'm still not sure, the keyboard is a big deal - I think I'd definately use it heavily, I did with my old TyTN 2.
Yesterday I went to two different Voda shops (business) and none had it in stock, one girl didnt even know what it was (lol).
Right now I'm down to these:
1. iPhone 3GS - bit of a gimmick though and too expensive, but I got to try it and although the functionality looks quite thin (I had an Ipod Touch so the interface novelty wore off) its a nice phone, dont think it will suit my needs.
2. HTC Hero - I like android and what its trying to achieve, I also love Linux (my job) but I do NOT like the way the device is shaped - nightmare in the pocket.
3. HTC Diamond 2 - The more I look at the reviews the more this phone is top of my list, BUT the only issue is the touch keypad, I just think it wont be good enough, I dont know.
4. Samsung Omnia HD - Amazing phone, but not a big fan of Symbian, was almost tempted to buy this until I read about the codec issues with the sound recording and Samsung stance on fixing it.
5. Samsung Omnia Pro - ????
Decisions decisions, so many damn phones!
Final question, did anybody here order from MPD on a Friday (contract) and get the phone saturday???

Just to add to the mix - Omnia 2 has started to get some coverage...
Yeah I noticed that too mate, the Omnia Pro?
Coming July, but still, there are many many bugs with the HD version (it maybe Symbian based but...) which puts me off.
I think I am going for the TP2, though my brain is telling me to wait a month or two.
without being device specific what I see is the need for you to do a lot of typing so i would recommend something with a great keyboard. Rhodium certainly has that

To order, yes, but if you call up their upgrade line and be doubtful at them, they'll tell you that if you're not happy with it you can send it back within 7 days with no quibbles... That might only be relevant to current customers mind, and distance selling regs don't apply if you go to a store. I called them up just over a week ago since I was out of contract and had one delivered the next day. A friend got the HTC Magic on the same deal the same day, and another friend has an iPhone so we were able to compare the three phones over a number of days of real use. I kept the TP2... It works well enough, there are a couple of very minor niggles, but most of those are to do with Windows Mobile (and being new to it so expecting things to work in a slightly different way) rather than the phone itself.
Steve.

You don't mention the N97 for some reason. When I was deciding on my upgrade I ended up with a straight choice between the TP2 and the N97 as I had decided that a keyboard was a must.
The TP2 won out because of several points WM being the most obvious (I've had loads of WM phones and am used to it) and Tomtom being the clincher ( I have a shockingly bad sense of direction which, incidentally, has been made much worse by Tomtom but at least I don't get lost now)
If it is down to TP2 v TD2 then it is simply a choice between keyboard v size
There are loads of shops with the TD2 in stock. Give it a go
EDIT: Vodafone gave me 7 days to return the phone if I didn't like it. IIRC Order by 2pm for delivery next day
I just received my TP2 yesterday. I brought it from MPD on payg voda which was £453 - it comes unlocked and unbranded so I chucked my o2 sim right in.
I as well as many others had a tough choise to make - I research everything to death before I buy them, and I have to say on most occasions when I do commit and buy, its a disappointment.
However now using the TP2 it has exceeded all my expectations from all reviews I read and video's I watched (probably 100+).
The stock rom is fantastic, very fluid, very productive and hides nearly all the standard windows mobile interface (only having to see it when using explorer).
I don't expect I can change your mind by this post, but what I will say is that once you actually have it in your hand you will understand why everyone here rants on about it. I compared it to my friends HD last night and the rom beats the HD rom in terms of speed and features, and the quality of the product itself is astounding.
Couple this with the future release of WM6.5, flash 10 for WM in Oct (beta), and HTC Sense release - you have a phone that should last you 18 months - after all, I don't think we will see WM7 on phones till the end of next year, so then is when you can upgrade again.
I haven't tried the TD2 or Samsung HD i900 (or whatever they called it now), but picking between this and the TD2 comes down whether you need a keyboard, or if you like things as small and compact as possible.
Let us know how you get on - keep trying to find a place to try it out
Sounds good - I am very tempted to just pay out for the SIM free as you did since most of the contracts on there incurr extra charge for daily surfing, my existing T-Mobile contract is up for renewal and does NOT incurr extra surfing charges, its also only £22!
I am tempted to renew it and see if I can get a better deal on unlimited texts and buy the phone SIM free from MPD or Expansys.
Definately the Rhodium... or wait for the Omnia Pro

£450 or so for an unlocked handset equates to a lot of surfing!
My phone was free on 30/month (ex VAT), including 500Mb data which should be enough for my needs
Only downside is a 24 month contract
Steve.
i think htc hd is the best choice for know it has thin body 3.5 mm audio jack good battery bigger screen than all
