New to Smartphones - HTC Excalibur

I was wondering if there was a way to replace the windows mobile with symbian or something of that sort, im not a big fan of microsoft. i lurked in the forums and i did find the android being tested to work on it, but its still in progress, i was wondering if perhaps symbian has been put into this fone. i didnt find anything in the forums answering it exactly...

Not at the moment, the Android port is still very much a work in progress. I think Symbian is going open-source but as I understand it, it's just the core operating system that is going open-source. The Series 60 interface used by Nokia phones is proprietary and I think so is the UIQ interface for some Sony Ericsson phones - so don't expect to see your Excalibur looking like a Nokia E71 (for instance!) any time soon.
I would give WM a try though. Paradoxically for Microsoft, it's one of the more open mobile phone platforms out there - at least there is a fairly big market for applications and it's actually fairly easy to write your own against the .NET compact framework.
j

plus there are many great WM roms on this forum, one for just about every tast out there

Need forum for Nokia Firmware Developer

As all we that know that Nokia source code now 100% open.
can u make a firmware developer forum for nokia where the developers can made changes in nokia firmwares like windows mobiles?
Is it possible that
I can make the forum, I will buy the domain, hosting everything, just suggest me a good domain name and I will take care of the rest
which one u want like xda forum or other?
i think its good and there is not any domain name like this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nokia
Oh if you want a sub-domain under xda-developers, then there's nothing to buy, the admins will have to look into this.
And although Symbian is opensource now, Nokia firmware development is unlikely to happen, because the Z drive on Nokia devices, which is the ROM, is locked. And I don't think anyone has succeded in unlocking it permanently so far.

Oh thats cool then, the last Symbian I used was N95 8GB, it was hard to do then. Well the admins already said XDA-Developers will only be dedicated to HTC devices, so a Nokia sub-forum is unlikely to happen. But if you can get some developers who are interested in this, then I can make a separate website for it, something like nokia-developers.com or symbian-developers.com
HTC only?
If you scroll down the forum homescreen you'll see other WinMo/Android devices outside of HTC. Maybe the question was asked in the wrong way to the admins. I don't think we're looking to really mod Nokia devices. However, as Nokia begins to release more devices with "Intel" chip-sets the development community may see some shift towards working on Nokia hardware/firmware.
What we currently want is to do is explore and develop the new and open source Symbian ^1 ^2 ^3 ^4 and ^5 into ROM's that load onto our beloved HTC devices.
Compatibility and open-ness are driving the new information economy. Symbian has some pretty darn cool stuff like N-Gage gaming, support to play "Digital Copy" movies, etc...
Imagine being able to just transfer your digital copy movie over to your HD2 or TouchPro 2 because your PC thinks your device is a 5800. Right now you'd have to convert the digital copy through some illegal method.
Apple locks down their devices to prevent us from doing this kind of work. We're a community of open, intelligent and capable minds/people. This community should not be so "Apple" like and prevent open development.
I'm also suggesting, just as there was on the Rhodium page for Android, a bounty issued for Symbian ROM development.
A Nokia forum wouldn't make sense. Nokia only owns a majority of the Symbian platform. What we really want is a Symbian forum on XDA. We want this so that we have a single source of information on an important topic where we know that we truly have experts working on the issues and solutions. XDA could experience major growth by doing this and attracting Symbian developers. Symbian is closely related to WinMo as it is so this wouldn't be a daunting task for developers. C++
To be honest, I don´t think this will happen.

Good Luck
Please post on the site what phones should be added and what forums should be there
http://symbian-developers.com/
Such a shame there obviously isn't much interest in the newest Nokia phones.
I really think with the N8 and C7 Nokia took a big step forward and I'd love to see them get the recognition they deserve for it.
Unfortunately they might be a year or two too late.
I think, if there was a Symbian Forum on XDA-Developers, it might be way more successful than an external site. So I very much +1 the TO request.
BTW: Does anyone know if apps for the N8 and C7 are interchangable?
Greetings.
PS: Can a software branding be totally removed from the C7 / N8?

Nokia N900 Forum Poll

As new forums have been added for other phones and platforms, I think they should add a forum dedicated to the Nokia N900 as this runs Maemo 5, which some of you are aware is a linux operating system and is very versatile and hackable.
In fact, this phone is that hackable, it can dual boot linux and google android, and has even had Windows 98 and Mac OSX running on it!
Please post your views and opinions on the subject.

Nokia N900 runs Maemo 5 OS which is linux based. This is an entirely different platform to symbian altogether.
I like Maemo and the N900. This is surprising considering I usually hate things from Nokia, but despite its flaws, the N900 and Maemo proved to be a surprisingly good combination, and may eventually become much greater than what it is now.
Unfortunately, there is no chance the N900 will be added. Svetius stated specifically that even though non-HTC sections are being added, only Android and Windows Mobile phones will be allowed.
Internettablettalk/maemo.org is about as active and helpful as XDA.. why would you want to divide that crowd?

I would'nt look at it as 'dividing' but merely integrating the N900 with the rest of society!
I recently bought one and I must say I have done more with this than any WM device I have ever owned, damn, I can use it as a ps3 controller, and even connect a wii remote upto it and play games full screen with tv out on my n900! well impressed!
Oh, and I can even change the channels on my tv with it!

Have a N900 also got to agree it's very versatile. Still clinging to my HTC, just can't bring myself round to selling it.
Hello guy's,
I'm just new on this forum and with my HTC and X1 this forum is perfect!
But after dropping my X1 I had to buy a new phone and I went aswell for the N900.
It would be perfect for this forum to add an Maemo 5 / N900 topic.
Not because I have one now but you can do so much with it and thanks to the open source it will grow pretty quick
For me it will be a thumbs up aswell
n900
yep just sold my tp2, to try out n900, wow glad i did, ts just a better phone and hardware combo ( not the keyboard obviously )
would be great to see it on here.
i know its a little late but it even increased the battery life of my hd2 since i own one
How Upgrading Nokia N900 maemo 5 ?
Hello,
I have a nokia n900 and is can't make any call, it's say all function of calling is not avaible. They tell me to flash it but i don't know with rom ti use and how to do it. Please help me!

Im so done with wm and my hd2...

Im done guys with Wm my Hd2 is up for sale no update for hardware that can run Wp7 they can have wp7 my hd2 is up for sale and i just picked up my new Nexus one just flashed the new HTC Desire Rom running at 1.3GHZ Im happy Hello Android mabey next time WM mabey next time
Maybe next time, punctuation. Maybe next time...
Personally, I'm in the 'Buy a phone for what it can do now, not what I hope it might be able to do in the future' school of thought.
Sure, no WP7 is a disappointment, but if you own an HD2 (as I did for a while), you got what was being promised. For me, it was the lack of a keyboard that made me get a TP2, but the HD2 is still one helluva phone.
No announcement has been made. I'm gonna laugh if the HD2 ends up getting an update.
bye bye cry baby, i swear you guys crack me up. how can you be upset when you bought the phone without anything being announced if you bought it because YOU THOUGHT it was getting an update thats your own fault, ms didnt tell you ANYTHING. and the hd2 is gonna have wp7s soon enough, maybe not officially but who cares, custom roms>>>>>>official roms
I would be glad to take your HTC HD2 off your hands
The forum would be way better without such threads. But on the flip side it's funny to see how stupid some people are (sorry but it's the truth)

It's not so much the lack of an upgrade that's the problem, it's the combination of that plus WP7 being incompatible with Windows Mobile software. That's one thing nobody was predicting a few months ago, and it means that there is no longer any reason for a commercial software company to continue working on any Windows Mobile project - see, for example, Adobe's decision to scrap FlashPlayer on WinMo.
To say "your phone won't get an OS upgrade" is one thing, but to say "your phone won't get an upgrade, and incidentally we also neglected to mention that your phone's current OS would cease to be a viable platform for commercial software about three months after you buy it" is something else.
And it is not by any means certain that there will be custom ROMs based on WP7.

I doubt it. The reason chefs have been able to make WM6.5 for older devices is because it is still based off of the same kernel as 5.0-6.1. If you are familiar with cooking ROMs for older devices, you would realize that we are still using 6.0 drivers on all of these 6.5 ROMs. Once the kernel changes, however, those drivers will most-likely be useless.
And yeah, buying the HD2 probably wasn't the best idea.

It's also possible to run 6.5 on the Himalaya, which is originally based on PPC 2003 = different wince kernel.

But the Himalaya still got WM5, so that still means it got WinCE 5.2 kernel one way or another. Once it got a 5.2 kernel, it can run anything from WM5 all the way up to WM6.5.x

alright that finally explains it. Didn't know they got an official WM5 release.
The HTC HD2 is an impressive device even without WP7 As for upgrading it, there will be a debate but, they will chose to release a HD3 instead. Feel free to sign the petition though, lol http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/hd2windowsphone7/

I'm quite on the contrary
Ironically a handful of days ago I made similar decision. Except for that I was really, really pissed off by Android and decided to switch back to WinMo. So I got a HD2.
Now I'm (again) having:
- The capability to play almost every media format on my phone
- *REAL* GPS navigation suites
- Serious, polished, and visually attractive games, by lots
- Proper tool to manage my personal (2 of them) and business mail accounts, with attachment, reply record and everything
- Excellent applications to read *AND EDIT* Word and Excel files. It's vital to have this as a translator who frequently has to work on-the-go.
- PDB, PRC, CHM, LIT, TXT, RTF, DOC, DOCX, HTML, PDF in short, whatever document format I may need to read. And the tools to do this are generally extremely polished
- The freedom of setting the phone on true mute mode once and for all, unlike on certain idiot OS where you set the thing on mute, all system notifications get silenced, while everything else from media player to games continue to sing how ever loud it likes
And what I no long have:
- Don't have to pick from a thousand not so different but frequently buggy cooked ROMs
- Don't have to flash my phone like once per week to keep up with new version of cooked ROM franchise
- Don't have to comb through 10K apps, filter 90% of them (crapware swarm), and pray "God give me some actually useful app please, amen"
Anyway, I'm not sure why so many people chanting around "Android is much, much by the outdated WinMo". I believe that the value of a smartphone is reflected by what it can achieve. WinMo so far is still much better than Android on satisfying my professional and entertainment needs. Yep its UI is no match for Android's (at least less colorful). But I can't care less about that. Beautiful or not, get the job done first.
As to WP7 update. Well, I'm having great faith on XDA. Even if Microsoft and HTC decide to screw HD2 owners big time, chances are pretty good the magnificent young men (and women) here can make an unofficial update happen. It doesn't really matter for me if this is not happening. Right now I'm having everything I need already, and I'm happy. WP7 is only a plus.
it's so true ....

That’s what comes to my mind when I think Windows Mobile vs. Android
Actually I really don't care if Windows Phone 7 doesn’t get an "official" release for HD2.... Its current state is a "Solid Windows Mobile 6.5 PocketPC" which is exactly what was intended for it to be.

I PM'd you with my offer

Nokia n900

I know xda developers is mostly a windows mobile and android sit but I would like a n900 section on xda developers it would really boost the hacking scene because we all know this is the best place for smartphone hacking and the n900 is the best device to hack it would almost be like love. What do you guys think.
Welcome to forums
This has been discussed many times and answer remains no. (as far as I know)
I love the idea!
I am thinking in moving on to this weird and wonderful device/os.
Even though it seems to have only a few applications available directly I've read that the Linux on it is based on Debian and if you know your way around linux you can download almost any Debian app. and what I often see here is people wanting to get their hands on some phone with linux in it or some version of linux for their phones. In a way this one offers all this but, yes, it is a Nokia device, so what?
I will still keep one of my HTC/Wimo devices but will scrap the rest!
I want always on full internet and other geeky stuff.
So there Orb! Put it in your pipe and smoke it!
Hey all,
I am a happy owner of a n900 and it is the first time I am so excited with a mobile device since my first symbian phone. What amazes me with the device is its 'open' character, meaning that you buy the hardware, with maemo ofcourse, but the device is meant to be exploited. you can dual (triple) boot running android, meego and maemo, you can port many applications (Qt 4.6.2 Gui required), you can compile yourself stuff, run a debian VM with easy-debian.
Since most of applications are linux ported, there is loads of stuff you can do. Am example I enjoy is you can run an x11vnc server on your n900 and remote access it from anywhere with a vnc client. Other fancy stuff such to connect the n900 to your tv, run an Amiga emulator, bind your ps3 controller over BT, and start playing.
It's (very easy) overclockable, GPU runs great, VoIP services as a charm (Skype Video is now added), and most important in a really good multitasking environement. And ofcourse the moment you want to call your phone will response very very fast.
While it does all of the above, it does give you an iPhone feeling in terms of ease of use and device polishing.
On the downside, until today the software was limited except if you were a linux pro as very well mentioned above. The new 1.2 upgrade with Qt support broadens the range and posibiliteis quite a lot. For me, only support for Flash 10 is also a big issue for now, and i really hope it gets addressed soon.
It is bulky (related to iPhone likes) - nothing new here.
Bottom end, I tend to agree it doesn't fit to this forum. this forum was always about smartphones. This is one a tiny marvelous computer that can make GSM calls too. I think its a bit advanced for this site ;-)

there you go then if you have a n900 and want to tweak it!
better talent here than maemo.org. still have my htc hd and the n900, just can't part with my htc yet.
Please make it, its a way to promote a lot of staff and give one opportunity for this system, *if nokia* gives the same "status" as Google with Android probably it will be the best system for mobile ever. A simple example, Maemo as conceited to support Open GL 2.0, Android not. Maemo was made for gives a new way to do the things, Android is only a WinMO more social and user-friendly. Now with MeeGo, the system haves a new chance, but XDA could help because Nokia still sucks with support.
So, please make it, i will appreciate it as well.
WoW!
I am now running nearly ALL my dearest Palm OS apps of yore (from my Treo650) in a VM inside N900.
Gotta looove open platforms!
If interested, follow here.
how comes there`s a new Kin forums and nothing for the N900 thats just BS
i suppose the n900 is linux and we've tweaked with linux here at xda before so.... if you contact the administrator he might say yes!
Both Communities have amazing minds, and i'm sure that there could be some overlap of usefulness stuff if there was an included section.
At the very least it would generate new interest for the site as a whole.
I also think that an N900 section would compliment the already excellent forums of XDA. As you are probably aware there is a lot of development currently underway of porting Froyo to this device.
We are all like minded and are trying to get the most out of our mobile devices. The nokia N900 is linux based as with the andriod system.
Thanks
I stupidly started a thread on this subject without searching earlier, apologies for that, should know better.
I see that there's a few of us wanting to see the N900 represented here.
I'd be happy to do some articles on the power mangement system and other bits I've learned since getting my N900, if only there was an appropriate place to put them.
Please don't say the obvious "put them on <insert-name-of-maemo-forum>". I trust this community to dissect and disseminate information in a constructive way. Other forums just don't give me the same confidence.
I think it'd be a smart move to add it for a few reasons:
1. It is a great way to combine the minds from here to another powerful device
2. With major companies now backing the Meego OS for there vehicle systems, this would be a great way to get the foot in the door as this OS gains some ground in the coming year or so.
3. The community here is exceptionally constructive...it's not about what can't be done, it's about discovering what can. What better tool to use than an fairly open sourced/linux based device.
4. My biased reason: Now that it's my only device, I miss xda :-(
I'm sure there are also some seasoned programmers familiar with the OS differences that would be able to bring up some more in depth reasons on why programming for this device wouldn't be a huge stepping stone from Android/Win Mo.
I would believe that breaking down all of the positives on the programming side of things might be a way for the admin's to make a thoughtful/final decision on whether or not it's worth XDA's resources to add the phone.
i had a n900 and i loved and even overclocked it, my youtube video was on engadget and got 50000 hits
anyways great device and hardware but letdown by nokia, i then bought the desire as i got bored of n900. so happy i got rid of it it had a major price drop in the second hand market.
I would really like to see one as well since I just got the N900. I really like the community here and doesn't want to leave this forum because I bought a n900.
hi together i also own a N900 since Nokia decided to choose Meego and Maemo5 is dying i play around with Nitdroid for the N900 its an Android Port for the N900 and works very well the only Problem is that the Phone radio dont works. The Nitdroid Port for the N900 is done by 3 People so far maybe some good Devs from here could help to get the Phone or GPS working for this, that would be amazing.
I guess nobody cares about the N900 anymore .. since Nokia goes to Meego i just hope about the Nitdroid Port.

XDA No NOKIA/Symbian support

Hi, I really love this site and was wondering why there is no nokia/symbian support? It would be cool if I could get support for all my devices in one site. Thx
I think that's quite an interesting idea, In what way can you mod a symbian phone though ??
Symbian platform usually uses Linux. So like Android. But is Symbian really worth looking into to customize? Now a Symbian App section might be a good idea. There should be some kind of poll at least.
check these for symbian mods and see if symbian is worth modding

Well i think this forum is about WM, Android and WP7.

Well I really love my New N8 and would be even better if I could dual boot android
I also looking for a Symbian/Nokia Forum, it were nice to see it on xda-developer.
I am contemplating adding a Nokia Nuron to my cell phone collection soon.
Sent from my MB200 using XDA App
+1 for a Nokia / Symbian section!
oems are giving up hope for symbian, it could use a community like xda
also meego = awesome and needs xda support as well imo

im sure there's more but im lazy
We are a global network for WM and Android Devices..True that we started the i-phone devs, but it was after a lot of considerations..As it is we have a terrific amount of phones lined up on the forum home page.We never thought of creating the Legacy devices forum over here, but due to constant advancement of technology and thus the devices too,we cut short the forum main page and a Legacy devices Sub forum was created...Still,the main page list is too big to end.I doubt Svetius would include a Nokia/Symbian Sub-forum on XDA..As it is Nokia also has a tougher and long line-up of its devices...It would create a clutter on already overcrowded XDA..Also users may ask to include more and more devices of the Symbian Os thus inviting Sony-Ericsson and other players on the Symbian too..So its gonna be a strict NO from my side[A hardcore WM loyalist]..If it does happen,it would be a sister project[forum] just like i-Phone developers...
PM the Admins and may be they'd have a look into this!
"In what way can you mod a symbian phone though ?? "
just look at hyperx and faenil roms, the samsung i8910 with 600/700mhz (latest mod of hyperx clocks the cpu to 950mhz) is same or faster than hd2 with 1 ghz (in custom wm or android roms). It would be great to have a device like hd2 with a less hungry OS like symbian, and a good browser too ,in the end what matters is the taste and how biased ppl are , imho hd2 great hardware with crap OS (wm), android (not so crap but much hungry OS), and symbian (apart the browser) great OS but crap hardware (apart i8910).
noo.. I am pretty sure that there is a reasoin that since 2 years ago only Nokia is producing phones with Symbian.. when I got my first phone (a Nokia) there was Samsung SE.. etc. with symbian.. To be honest.. Symbian is BAD. not worth paying for.. unless you need a cheap smart phone.. eg Nokia 5230 ot 5233 etc..
at least add meego forums plz
just for curiosity, have you ever seen/used one of the custom roms in i8910 or just talking about like others do?
well i personally think put all the HTC into one sub section then HTC users choose which phone.. its just way too much HTC on the main forum page.
This was mainly HTC forum before they started to add another popular devices, so i doubt you will see that.
this idea is so good i broke out the nuron to reply lol it took twelve minutes j/k but really it did lol

exactly. xda = htc. which was only wm phones until the rise of android, and the long hesitation for the wp7. the only reason android is covered on other devices is because htc started carrying android.
but im one of the people that thinks they are adding too many devices to the forums, and should stick with just htc hardware.
