I know xda developers is mostly a windows mobile and android sit but I would like a n900 section on xda developers it would really boost the hacking scene because we all know this is the best place for smartphone hacking and the n900 is the best device to hack it would almost be like love. What do you guys think.
Welcome to forums
This has been discussed many times and answer remains no. (as far as I know)
I love the idea!
I am thinking in moving on to this weird and wonderful device/os.
Even though it seems to have only a few applications available directly I've read that the Linux on it is based on Debian and if you know your way around linux you can download almost any Debian app. and what I often see here is people wanting to get their hands on some phone with linux in it or some version of linux for their phones. In a way this one offers all this but, yes, it is a Nokia device, so what?
I will still keep one of my HTC/Wimo devices but will scrap the rest!
I want always on full internet and other geeky stuff.
So there Orb! Put it in your pipe and smoke it!
Hey all,
I am a happy owner of a n900 and it is the first time I am so excited with a mobile device since my first symbian phone. What amazes me with the device is its 'open' character, meaning that you buy the hardware, with maemo ofcourse, but the device is meant to be exploited. you can dual (triple) boot running android, meego and maemo, you can port many applications (Qt 4.6.2 Gui required), you can compile yourself stuff, run a debian VM with easy-debian.
Since most of applications are linux ported, there is loads of stuff you can do. Am example I enjoy is you can run an x11vnc server on your n900 and remote access it from anywhere with a vnc client. Other fancy stuff such to connect the n900 to your tv, run an Amiga emulator, bind your ps3 controller over BT, and start playing.
It's (very easy) overclockable, GPU runs great, VoIP services as a charm (Skype Video is now added), and most important in a really good multitasking environement. And ofcourse the moment you want to call your phone will response very very fast.
While it does all of the above, it does give you an iPhone feeling in terms of ease of use and device polishing.
On the downside, until today the software was limited except if you were a linux pro as very well mentioned above. The new 1.2 upgrade with Qt support broadens the range and posibiliteis quite a lot. For me, only support for Flash 10 is also a big issue for now, and i really hope it gets addressed soon.
It is bulky (related to iPhone likes) - nothing new here.
Bottom end, I tend to agree it doesn't fit to this forum. this forum was always about smartphones. This is one a tiny marvelous computer that can make GSM calls too. I think its a bit advanced for this site ;-)

there you go then if you have a n900 and want to tweak it!
better talent here than maemo.org. still have my htc hd and the n900, just can't part with my htc yet.
Please make it, its a way to promote a lot of staff and give one opportunity for this system, *if nokia* gives the same "status" as Google with Android probably it will be the best system for mobile ever. A simple example, Maemo as conceited to support Open GL 2.0, Android not. Maemo was made for gives a new way to do the things, Android is only a WinMO more social and user-friendly. Now with MeeGo, the system haves a new chance, but XDA could help because Nokia still sucks with support.
So, please make it, i will appreciate it as well.
WoW!
I am now running nearly ALL my dearest Palm OS apps of yore (from my Treo650) in a VM inside N900.
Gotta looove open platforms!
If interested, follow here.
how comes there`s a new Kin forums and nothing for the N900 thats just BS
i suppose the n900 is linux and we've tweaked with linux here at xda before so.... if you contact the administrator he might say yes!
Both Communities have amazing minds, and i'm sure that there could be some overlap of usefulness stuff if there was an included section.
At the very least it would generate new interest for the site as a whole.
I also think that an N900 section would compliment the already excellent forums of XDA. As you are probably aware there is a lot of development currently underway of porting Froyo to this device.
We are all like minded and are trying to get the most out of our mobile devices. The nokia N900 is linux based as with the andriod system.
Thanks
I stupidly started a thread on this subject without searching earlier, apologies for that, should know better.
I see that there's a few of us wanting to see the N900 represented here.
I'd be happy to do some articles on the power mangement system and other bits I've learned since getting my N900, if only there was an appropriate place to put them.
Please don't say the obvious "put them on <insert-name-of-maemo-forum>". I trust this community to dissect and disseminate information in a constructive way. Other forums just don't give me the same confidence.
I think it'd be a smart move to add it for a few reasons:
1. It is a great way to combine the minds from here to another powerful device
2. With major companies now backing the Meego OS for there vehicle systems, this would be a great way to get the foot in the door as this OS gains some ground in the coming year or so.
3. The community here is exceptionally constructive...it's not about what can't be done, it's about discovering what can. What better tool to use than an fairly open sourced/linux based device.
4. My biased reason: Now that it's my only device, I miss xda :-(
I'm sure there are also some seasoned programmers familiar with the OS differences that would be able to bring up some more in depth reasons on why programming for this device wouldn't be a huge stepping stone from Android/Win Mo.
I would believe that breaking down all of the positives on the programming side of things might be a way for the admin's to make a thoughtful/final decision on whether or not it's worth XDA's resources to add the phone.
i had a n900 and i loved and even overclocked it, my youtube video was on engadget and got 50000 hits
anyways great device and hardware but letdown by nokia, i then bought the desire as i got bored of n900. so happy i got rid of it it had a major price drop in the second hand market.
I would really like to see one as well since I just got the N900. I really like the community here and doesn't want to leave this forum because I bought a n900.
hi together i also own a N900 since Nokia decided to choose Meego and Maemo5 is dying i play around with Nitdroid for the N900 its an Android Port for the N900 and works very well the only Problem is that the Phone radio dont works. The Nitdroid Port for the N900 is done by 3 People so far maybe some good Devs from here could help to get the Phone or GPS working for this, that would be amazing.
I guess nobody cares about the N900 anymore .. since Nokia goes to Meego i just hope about the Nitdroid Port.

As a long time poster and developer at XDA, I'd just like to go on record as saying that my Tilt 2 is the best Windows phone I've ever owned. Fast, efficient and pretty much crash free, this phone has powered my mobile life more effectively and efficiently than any of the predecessors I've owned.
It's a shame that the Windows Mobile OS finally reached its promise only to fade away. WP will be nothing that I want a part of so I'll be moving to Android ITNF just as soon as I can find a device that can match the specs of my Tilt2 on AT&T.
Anyway, kudos to HTC for this one. You broke the mold for sure and showed me that WM really could be up to the task of a daily workhorse in more areas than I could ever have dreamed of.
completely agree. i switched to android for a spell, but came back because it wasnt quite there for an actual business tool. however i have been following it and i think with the additions of some security protocals coming in 3.0 i may make the switch. as far as my tp2 goes, its a rock solid device. sure it took a lot of tweeking but in the end this thing is a work horse and i lament the loss of such a great os. if ms put any effort into it, they wouldnt have had to do wp7 at all, and android wouldnt have gotten off the ground. but oh well, it is what it is.

not to argue with you over your preferences but I’m not sure you have taken the time to go through and look at all that WP7 has to offer, you should check out the WP7 videos on pocketnow.com YouTube http://www.youtube.com/user/pocketnowvideo I admit at first look it made me think WTF but as I read more in to it and learn more about the new OS I get more and more excited for this new platform. Multitasking isn’t there from day one but I believe that the team behind this OS know what they are doing and I believe that feature will come to fruition soon after release.
As for the specs the tilt2 is a great phone but not when it comes to specs, WP7 has standardized specs starting well above the tilt2 specs.
I do agree that the tilt2 is a great phone and android is going in the right direction for itself, but I think you should give WP7 another chance and look at what it has to offer you and everyone else, I believe this is truly the first mobile OS with Business users, home users, gamers and developers in mind.
My biggest problems with WP7 are its locked down, abstracted filesystem, lack of multi-tasking support, and app-store only enhancement source. Taken straight from Apple, these are also many of the reasons why I'll never buy an iPhone. The fact that SD card support exists is a joke since the filesystem is "striped" onto the card rather than targeted there.
Conversely, there are already several free developer tools for Android and underneath the hood, its Linux with a rich, well-known file-system having traditional SD card support. I have many self-developed apps on my Tilt2; it was easy to develop for since WM had the same code-base architecture as windows. As a Java developer, I'm expecting a short learning curve for Android as well, not to mention a large inventory of custom ROMs to choose from.
Hate to see you leaving the WM world, I've been using your apps since my Hermes.
I must agree, the TP2 is one work horse of a device, and after a little tweaking one of the fastest most stable I've owned. I'm torn between WP7 and Android for my next device, I do know it will be something from HTC tho.
For me, the Touch Pro2 is the best mobile device up to date. I guess I'll move to Android later as WP7 isn't exactly what I where waiting for.
Shame that Rhodium hasn't got 2x ram and a snap dragon processor. This probably would enhance it's lifetime.
Shame that also Palm has gave up mobile devices. I would be really excited to see a lifted palmOS device. Like an updated Palm Pre with a qwerty keyboard... Ahhh! I would love it.
Anyone knw when android might be ported to be used on WP7? I plan on getting a Samsung Focus instead of The Captivate so i can get the best of both world, WP7 and Android (if it happens)
Not happening anytime soon.
1. No unlock yet
2. Brand new coding that has to be deciphered
3. Most people buying this phone don't want android
Buy a bloody android phone if you want android!!!!
Good luck getting the device drivers.from MS.

What's the point? Aren't WP7 phones and Android phones based on the same hardware ?
android on sd is never going to happen .
and nand maybe when there are phones with way better hardware ( what is the point to port android to a phone with same hardware as hd2)
personally I hope android is never coming to a wp7 phone .
Are you kidding me? if you want android go buy an android phone...... thats like, buying an iphone and hoping someone ports WP7 to it. go buy an android phone.....seriously.....
For information ...
Is in the correct section as this is a question about Android on a device WP7

I don't see any reason for Android on a WP7 device. That would be like a downgrade.
I think it would be great for apps that have not been released. I would be lost w/o out logmein. There are prob some people out there like me that would love to run wm7 and jump to the android os form time to time to do things like that.
I've decided to abandon Android on my HD2 altogether now. There's just too many problems or bugginess with it that it just isn't as good as a nice Energy build of WinMo. All of the work they've done with Android over the months and there's still just not fit for use. Currently the best one I've found is the eVo Carbon Remix build by motoman234. But it's a Sense build and I prefer the more convenient Nexus-based builds. However, ALL of the Nexus-based builds are unusable with the number of widgets I use. And the ONLY Nexus-based build that stayed smooth scrolling with all of my widgets in place was NexusHD2. It has a touchscreen problem where the touch is intermittent.
I just can't see Android being of any use for the WP7 devices. It would never be as usable as WP7.
Quality is perception and experience, not fact.
They are not the same other than they can use the same hardware. They should not be combined. Port the program, not the os.

I work for a company developing/testing s/w for all mobile devices. I have access to all OS's and I can honestly say that IMO Windows Phone has the nicest user experience and all its lacking are features. Its only been out a week or two so give it time for the bugs to be fixed, features added and the App store to mature and it will be a cracking OS.

I gave up on custom roms altogether two years ago for the same reason. WinMo or Android, there was always at least a handful of huge bugs and/or unacceptable instability and/or limitations and/or stuff that didn't work. I wouldn't say there will NEVER be some alternative OS on these phones and I certainly wouldn't be so pompous to say that there shouldn't be some alternative OS available for those who might want it, but personally, given the speed and flexibility of these devices even now and all the afforementioned problems, I don't think I could really care less. Frankly, if I wanted an Android phone I'd have gotten one but after being spoiled by the iPhone for two years and given all the problems I've had with HTC devices in the past, I have zero interest. Fortunately, everyone is different.

The custom winmo ROMs are a different story to me. There are a lot of varieties available, and I have used a few, but by far the most reliable, stable and interesting of them are the Energy ROMs. I have zero problems using the one I use and it is fast, nimble and efficient. It doesn't require the constant maintenance the OEM ROM required in order to stay smooth and useful.
Before I flashed my first custom winmo on my HD2, I didn't believe guys sitting at their PCs doing these as a hobby could match or exceed a corporation who's workers were doing it for a living. But this one has shown me differently.
Android just doesn't interest me any longer, ever since using an actual Android phone for a few days. I just lost all drive to mess with it now that I have WP7. WP7 isn't any kind of a customizer's system but it is a system that is clean, smooth and exudes quality from every circuit. Android is like a mid-grade Ford sedan compared to WP7, which is more akin to a high-end Lexus or Infiniti.

the lexus steers itself into a parking spot, so you don't have to think. or learn. or try new things. ;-)

i think you would be much better off to use an android device, or iphone for taht matter when trying things with android. the wp7 devices will likely be very, very closed, very locked down, and very not fun to develop on. we're talking about developing anything other than wp7 here, so if someone flames that comment, you didn't read the entire bit.
the wp7 phone i played with @ bestbuy was very smooth (no multi-tasking) and did the very few things it did very well. only hung up when i tried to sms myself, and a reboot (i think this might be standard) fixed it quickly.
the hardware of the wp7 phones isn't going to be exactly like Android devices, and some bits will just never have drivers. unfortunately, this is a similar fate that we've been suffereing from with carriers in the US for a long time. they sell a phone, locked to their service, locked to their GSM bands, locked (no root) to their rom, and then when things go sour they expect you to just buy ANOTHER phone from them.
i'm casting a vote for open hardware, open OS's, and open information. wp7 is still very immature, and will gain some speed with enough time. hopefully some Android centric device manufacturers will release specs and drivers for anyone to play with. i'll bet it takes another 4-5 years before people realize just how much better things can be by allowing instead of limiting themselves.
give it time, you'll be able to emulate iphone hardware on the 3rd core of your wp8 device, or Android on the 2nd, all whiel playing a game AND facetime'ing your vbff.
hell, we didn't htink we'd be shooting HD video on phones not long ago ;-)
See, here's the problem; you assume we're just ignorant end users who haven't seen the light about android and open software and all that and it's an incorrect assumption. As a developer I've worked with tons of devices over the years and I know exactly what I want in a phone and Android isn't it. iPhone filled the position for a while but that's not it any longer, also. WP7 looks to be exactly what I want in a phone and it's going to get better. Oh...and I might also add that while I haven't had a lot of experience with it as a developer yet, it's been a blast to work with. Probably more so than the iPhone where I constantly had problems with certs and having to make sure I had the right version of OS, iTunes, XCode and iOS target and whatever other hoops needed to be jumped. It's as much fun as your imagination allows and my wife says I have a pretty good imagination.

Look at WP7 market now, there is even a thread here started - it is already filled with junk.
Anyway, since you are a developer reach out to MS and suggest what you would like to see in the market, and what you would like them to offer to the users.
Happy anniversary, btw.

Here's the thing...from my perspective...I like closed systems. Simple as that. But WP7 is a closed system with high-end quality. I love the iPhone and will grow even fonder of WP7 as it matures, providing MS stays with a closed system and maintains the emphasis on quality over quantity.
I've had my fill of Android and all it offers. I just...erm...it's...boring, to me. It gives me the feel of a used up hooker. It's been in every bed known to humanity.
OK I currently have a Samsung Fascinate, and im starting to get fed up with android and there horribly slow update time frame, and the bugs with this phone i wanna like it but for some reason i cant seem to.But i think what the problem is with android is that its so open and so many phone makers are making android phone these days and so fast its to much to kepp them all updated with the newest software version. And i have had a droid eris, droid incredible, a droid x, and now the samsung fascinate, and none of them seem to satisfy me. So my question to you guys is would it be worth switching from android to win7 when verizon gets some win 7 models this spring.

It all depends on what you want in a phone. I can only speak for myself about why I choose WP7 over the others, and that is because I prefer quality over quantity. For me, WP7 is the best mobile OS ever created. It has fine craftsmanship and superb quality written all over. It is a product that was labored over for a long time to make it the best it can be, regarding functionality, ease of operation, simplicity and quality of user experience. That is what I like. I'm attracted to effort from the heart. Like artwork, where the artist pours his/her self into what they create. WP7 is exactly that.
Do other systems currently have more features than WP7? Yes. But I was fully aware of the setup from the git-go. I knew a lot of features would be temporarily absent when I bought my HD7. But the good news is, there's an update scheduled for Jan that is *rumored* to be massive and provide so much more functionality that it will seem like WP8.
Compared to automobiles, WP7 is more akin to a Mercedes Benz or Lexus or Infiniti, whereas the other systems are more akin to ordinary cars. The world's leading software makers, who made Windows 7, which is the best and fastest selling PC OS in history and massively praised from every corner of the spectrum, have put together the world's best mobile OS in WP7.

The car analogy is a good one, I like android but it is like a fully loaded Ford (no disrespect) whereas WP7 is like a Ferrari, it oozes quality and design integrity, just doesn't have all the "toys" yet, but it will do.
just to add to that, i think if you give it a couple of months, play the wait and see game. there is a lot of hype around the first update, and althrough i have already jumped on the windows phone 7 bandwagon, i would suggest that if you're in no real rush, wait till the update comes out, and then compare windows phone to android, and ensure that it has all that you desire in a phone. and if it doesn't, are you willing to give up these things for what you may not have in android (e.g. uniformity, battery life [maybe?], and stability).

If, as you say, you'll be waiting until Spring, then you'll already have the first update, maybe even a second one, and the biggest missing features will be there, so I'd say, go for it.
Well i think im going to switch once verizon gets a win7 phone that i like. You guys were very helpful and i think i will like windows alot better once i pick one up and use one, android has just become to aggravating for me lol.

If you haven't, I'd say go to an at&t or t-mobile store and try it out. I'm a 6.5 to 7 convert who's also used android and 7 is a blast to use. As it's been said, if this January update does come on time and does the fixes they're hyping, it might be the best OS out there.
In Poland WP7 is upcoming soon.....
I also have a Samsung Fascinate - with the help of the devs here on XDA it is a very usable phone running leaked Android 2.2 builds (and the official update appears to be finally coming out today or tomorrow).
That said, I would shell out a few bucks to Microsoft for a version of WP7 that could be installed on the Fascinate...
Wishful thinking, I realize... particularly being on a CDMA carrier - but I gotta wonder why there aren't devices being offered that can run a choice of OSes.
I suspect there are a number of GSM phones out there running Android on hardware that could support WP7 (and vis-versa). the economics and support hurdles of such an offering obviously make the ODMs and carriers shy away from this idea, but for the population of mobile device enthusiasts who hang out on forums like this, it would be a pretty cool selling point for a phone to be able to run WP7 or Android.
[EDIT] I just searched a bit and saw that XDA folks have done an Android-or-WP7 dual boot config on the HTC HD2... How's that working out?
ohhh, this is an interesting thread a few months later !
Any good "dual-bootable" (WP7 + Android) hardware out there?

Yeah - perhaps I should've started a new thread for the dual-boot question - sort of changed the topic.
I am one of the faithful WM6.5 users. I do not care how cool my device is like most fake people that have moved on to Android & IPHONE cause their friends say they should. I feel that WM is still the best all around OS thought they all offer good things.
I would love to set goals for the future of WM6.5 like tryin to port FLASH 10.1. They did it for the IPHONE so it should be possible for WM. Also since we know software makers are walkin away from us for Android IPHONE and WP7 so i assume development for our devices will be done by the geniuses at XDA. I am not ready to walk away from this platform yet. I think we can keep it going for another year. Lets make 2011 the year of WINDOWS MOBILE. I want this thread to be dedicated to askin developers on XDA what new ideas they have for WM 6.1 & 6.5.
If you have ideas for games, ports, regedits, or programs to make our devices better please post below.
RULES:
DO NOT post tellin us what your favorite OS is or what the best OS is. Everyone knows that different people like different OS's.
DO NOT get upset if someone disagrees with your opinion.
DO NOT post unless you have something good to say about WM. This is a thread that is for people that want to better the WM OS not bash it. If you prefer Android or IPHONE then I am sure you can find somewhere to talk about how they are better than WM but do not do it here.
DO NOT tell us how WM is a dying OS, we know this already.
DO NOT post things such as your career or academic achievments and somehow link it to WM users being more or less intelligent then other users.
DO NOT post unless you love WM period!
WM is still very powerful operating system, but only if you can use it potential.
I wonder why people are more into simple-yet-dumb OS's which simply limit user.
On windows mobile, i can listen to music through bluetooth headset, share my 3g+ connection with laptop, browse html5 websites with flash and all of it on one device. And thats just beggining.
On the note to successor, WP7, where the hell is copy/paste? Dumb.
I love to copy commands from notepad to my remote desktop connection to use quick server commands.
BTW. I'm still laughing my ass off when i think about NO multitasking on iphone.

We r using it to its potential as of now but it can be better. As I mentioned FLASH 10.1 which was ran on the HD2 in a video but was never released for WM instead went to Android and was ported to the IPHONE. I think we should start a movement to get these things workin on WM. There is alot of useless apps being made and I would luv to see the developers move towards making our devices better instead of making them "cooler."
I totally agree - I am using WM5/6 as target devices for my private and business projects.
But it seems like the wm programmers are in short the veterans of programming. A little crowd (did someone say 3 are a crowd?) of people that stand to their mobile os :-D
I've been using android for a while and I have to say wm has the throne in productivity. I mean, I can play in android but wm can satisfy my needs mare than any other os
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
I've had a WM device for 3 years now, and it's old news. There's not even one...ONE single good sports app. How is there not one. Developers don't care about WM6. It's been swept under the carpet and it's sad because I still have a Treo Pro.
I totally agree for this post !
I hope that we have soon the the new wm6.X builds (WM6.5 handset,etc...) with new features and new API !!!!!
Why they are moving for less sophisticated OS? That's easy to answer. When Palm was the king of the hill, do you know what was the best selling PDA they had? It was the entry level Zire22 (lowres screen, no sdcard support, ...). Why? Because the vast majority of users are lowend. They will never:
1. sync with their computers
2. install anything new, use what was given with the phone/pda
3. tweak it
We are NOT regular users, and also, we are NOT the biggest buying group. They are business oriented, will manufacture what sells.
You can see the same with games. Who remembers the best racing simulator ever done, GrandPrix Legends by Papyrus? It was so hard to drive that it fail miserably on sales, they shifted their focus to a more arcade kind of games (best sellers).
I totaly agree and i think the same way that Win Mo is the Best OS right now and will tell why.
1st because WinMo is fully Costumizable in every aspect not only visual, so WinMo is the base if you have a WinMo Device for few seconds you can make it look like iOS or Anroid or Windows Mobile 7 or.. you name it.. so the WindowsMobile 6.X give use the freedom and is like chameleon on the same time.
I dont like stupid OS like the iPhone just icons icons and icons everywhere..
Android... you move widgets and etc this is all of course now i have Android look with SBP shell and when im totally pissed of i aways can just uninstall it))))))))))))
Honestly i like Android only for the Speed, and if we talk here honest we all know that WindowsMobile 6.x is SLOW OS by saying slow i mean compared to Android or iOS but overal WindowsMobile is good OS for everyday use if you costumize and optimize it
The things that we can do with our devices NO ONE can do them with Android or iOS or WM7 this is the TRUE.
Im not programer but i believe that many interesting thing can be done if here have serious peoples who love WM 6.x
And i really think that WinMo is still the KING because give us Freedom.
Couldn't agree more!wm6.5.x is quite decent .But lack of latest apps will be a problem as many software companies are no longer providing WM supports.many of apps running on my Omnia2 are last released 1 or 2 years ago and some of them are just not designed for 800X480 screen.
I have been a WinMo supporter since 2003SE. And I recently upgraded from my Tilt2 to the HTC Surround. I have to admit WP7 just works better. But Do not get me wrong, I will never give up my Tilt2. I love that device. I love trying new ROMs, using RDP, and most of all the keyboard. And I will continue my support of WM until Microsoft officially calls it EOL.
You know why people move to android? It's easier to use, more finger friendly, widely supported in terms of games, based on linux (doesnt get much more open source if you really want to dig), and its generally more physically appealing. Even with SPB mobile shell Windows mobile 6.5 looks like crap. I have an HD2 but aside from theming it to look like WP7 I've been using it primarily for android because, hey, I like to have FUN with my phone. When is the last time a truly GOOD app was made for winmo? I remember warspear a few years back that's about it. You pull together enough people to completely rejuvenate a lifeless OS and I will eat my own shoe on youtube for all of you. Til then.
Android: Functionality/Fun
WP7: Ease of use/glorified feature phone
iphone: Overpriced status symbol
WM5/6: Flatline
i didnt like 6.5, i thought it sucked. i did like 6.1 tho.
either way its a dead os with no new apps being devloped or updated. will have to wait to see what wp7 brings

Lmao. This dude is trapped in a fantasy world.
1. There's a reason that the Android section of this forum has more threads in Apps and Games, Themes, and Software development than Windows Mobile...and it hasn't even been around as long!
2. There's a reason everyone wants to mod their Windows Mobible devices to look like droids, AND even install the android os on their WM devices.
Tell me ONE thing, ONE THING that your WM6.5 or whatever it is can do, that an android phone can't, except make a less expensive paper weight?
I have a Palm Treo Pro, and as much as I love this phone, it's old news. I want a droid. WM is dead.
Long live to Windows Mobile!!
I think WM is far away to being considered as dead, of course MS wants that but it will depend on us users and Chefs & Devs to keep it alive!!
I still prefer it over WP7 and Android!
A voting for the best Developers award will be soon announced as a tribute to our beloved WM!
As much as I love WM, there is a simple fact, developers will develop for the popular platforms first and users will go where there are apps...just like games sell consoles, apps will drive smart devices.
WM is good, but MS has never made it easy to develop on, compact .net has always been lacking and you need a pro version of visual studio (with it's huge price tag). The fact that you can develop windows phone 7 using Visual Studio Express 2010 - which is free and that even the Pro version of Visual Studio 2010 does not support WM, shows that MS are doing their best to kill off WM, they've even removed many of the WebCasts for developing WM from their site so you can't even get the information you used to have available.
Add to that whole new area's of TV streaming devices and Tablets which are likely to support Android or iOS stuff and WM ends up being a smaller and smaller old and tired fish in a fast expanding pond of young competition.
You can see here, that the forum has already swung from WM!

I totally agree with meltwater. WM is going to die soon or later. In this moment I''m totally happy with my Touch HD, CHT 2.0 gave me all the flexibility on home page I was looking for. I can't find nothing on the other platforms I don't find for my actual phone, a part maybe something related to augmented reality.
On the other way I've already tried Android on my HD and works very well, considered all the limitations. Pity for camera and FM Radio, I use them so Android can't be for a daily use. But if they'll be able to solve last problems it's possible I'll start to use Android, more to start to use and learn the OS so to be ready when really new phones/tablet will come in the market. To say the truth I always liked big screens, so if next year a very good 7" tablet will be in the market with optimized Android (3.0?) and a price near 400 Euros, I'll definitely change the wagon.
About WP7, i appreciate Microsoft efforts, but I don't like at all . I've seen iPhone 4 and it's spectacular to see in use, nothing to say. But overpriced and not for me, similar to WP7 too many limitations.

I feel that there are quite a few misunderstandings in this thread. The first is that if developers were going to wait for MS to come up with the goods in the first place, this forum would have never existed. In fact, we would have been relegated to overpriced and monetiseed structures for selling icons and ringtones like the Symbian people.
Secondly, a person's reason for getting an Android phone or iPhone are different to that of the Windows user. Blame it on the recession, blame it on the lower IQ of the average smartphone user, either way the basis of buying Android or iPhone is a product of good marketing and the science of hype, like buying an ipod when instead you could stick a stereo jack in your phone and have all the same stuff. I bought my first WM phone years before I saw an ad for it, because Im a bit of tech junkie and I jumped at the opportunity to have so much functionality in a mobile platform. The decorations came later.
Thirdly, the constant habit of WM users customising their handsets to look like other platforms is for entertainment purposes only, we knew we could always press the hard-reset button and put the hype behind us.
Fourth, Microsoft always does the same thing of taking away support or info when they bring out a new OS. As much as I love Windows Mobile, I dont like Microsoft. The only way to move new product is to stop support for the biggest seller, I remember when they did the same thing with Windows 98 when XP came out.
Conclusion: If youre looking to resell common-place technology (thats been around for years) to hyped-up half wits, then Android/iPhone is the way to go. Its hard to pull the wool over a real Windows Mobile user's eyes, unfortunately.
Windows FTW always
I started using windows mobile long long ago and for its time it was something epic. However, once other smartphones came into play they were just unable to keep the pace. Sure, your phone CAN do a lot more, theres customizations on windows phones that android may not have for a long time. However if they'd been smart and invested some time when phones became more finger friendly rather than still forcing stylus usage when devices with "touch" in the name came out then they'd be a lot better off. Android in some aspects will never catch winmo, you just can't get that open source and expect to have a clean user experience. In some ways we may never catch up to winmo, parts of what they did may still be considered revolutionary 20 years from now but in a lot of ways we passed up windows mobile 2 years ago when the g1 came to pass because we took what you could do, we made it easier to develop, and we made it user-friendly to start out with. Windows mobile will remain a developers phone... if you want to shell out an unreal price for software that you wont make money off of anymore due to it being a dead operating system.

yes you will regret it , if you still want these features :
1- Bluetooth file transfer
2- ability to make folder
3 - icon view
4- rooting device
5- backing up ROM
6- backing up apps
7- much much more free apps and games
8- if you google around , you find paid apps for free
9- widgets
and alot more , but these are the most important features that are missing in WP7
If you think I helped , please hit thanks

Who said? Most sane WP7 users can acknowledge its not perfect but why is it this forum is filled mainly with threads criticizing WP7, mostly from people who dont use it? If they dont like it, why not post in forums of the OS they do like?
Thats the problem, this thread will be filled with posts by the usual haters spouting the same BS. By this time, 1 year later, shouldnt they have moved on to the platform that suits them? Yet any good point of WP7 is shouted down and discarded. You say people here arent ready to judge WP7 honestly, the haters are just as guilty of not being able to be honest and admit any positive in WP7.

Why are people keep comparing a 5+ yr old OS to a 1 yr OS is beyond me. We all know WP still have some growing to do. The rate it's growing is alot faster than we all anticipated.
I didn't mean to start any trouble... I really am just curious. I read a lot on engaget of windows 7 phones being efficient. My main question is what I want to do. I guess I'll stick to android and get the prime, and in 2 years rethink my options.
nevermind................

Listen, I'm a former Windows Mobile user who can shed some light. When my HTC Tilt got long in the tooth, I spent some time on borrowed Android devices. My theory was that the new Windows Phone 7 would be too locked down, too much like the iPhone, and that I'd be moving to Android instead. I loved to tinker and try to get as much out of my Windows Mobile device as possible, so figured I'd want something more powerful.
I mostly tinkered on an HTC Aria, which probably isn't a great comparison being a budget Android device, but I was modestly impressed. It honestly felt somewhat like an upgraded Windows Mobile device. Flexible, lots of options, etc.
When I was finally ready to upgrade, my wife was pregnant and I had a second job. I found myself without time to flash ROMs to my Windows Mobile device, and so I'd be stuck on a ROM I was dissatisfied with for weeks before having time to sit down and flash another one. When things didn't work on my Windows Mobile device, I would get frustrated and give up. I had stopped surfing, tinkering, installing, customizing, flashing...in other words, I started to use my HTC Tilt as a phone only, and maybe for light text messaging.
As such, I decided on a WP7 instead of Android. Boy oh boy oh boy do I NOT regret that decision. I have never ONCE looked back, and pity the fella who is still on his HTC Aria that I had borrowed. I have a dozen different hotmail accounts (because they allow custom domains and I run some businesses) and an exchange account, and they work flawlessly. The integration of contacts, calendar, messaging, mail...it's beyond helpful. I don't have to start a Facebook app, a search app, a navigation app. I can just talk to my phone to perform a search of any kind, and the browsing experience is top-notch. Facebook is right there, "merging" duplicate contacts is a joy, and I've found just about every app I think I'd ever need (granted, I moved from Windows Mobile, so it's not like I'm missing an app I ever had on another device).
Bottom line for me: if I were still a tinkerer, I may have gone with Android and would recommend Android to tinkerers (although you can definitely tinker with a WP7, if you wanted to). However, if you find yourself too busy for tinkering or just want more out of life than staring at a 4" screen and making an OS look and work the way you want, get the Windows Phone. If you want a robust smartphone that just works well, performs so many tasks natively that you really don't care about your app count, doesn't even need customizing because it looks great and performs well, get a Windows Phone.
Not only have I not looked back, but I have converted fully 5 non-techie people to Windows Phone with a sixth (the Aria fella) well on the way!
PS: My mom, unfortunately, snagged an Android device (not sure the name, but it's T-Mobile 4"-ish Samsung device) because the salesperson told her that "Android has millions of apps and Windows Phone has hardly any, and apps are what matter." I could wring that little egghead's neck, because now I'm constantly getting calls from my Mom asking how to do things on her phone, and telling me she "hates this thing" and is "confused."
I just don't know why people who genuinely hate the OS continue to come to this section... I went from WinMo, to Android, used an iPhone for a while as well, and can tell you that WinPhone is the best there is, especially at its young age. These people who want to own a phone to have to flash it weekly, or daily, can keep their Androids.
Windows phone 7.5 is great phone os. Is a nice looking os with few great built in features but is not a smartphone. I am using lg otimus 7 and i haven't any problems. Very solid and stable... And i love it... But i find my self using my 7inch Android tablet instead of my phone all the time. If someone wants a phone that can check emails and listen music wp7 is great. But if you want a mobile Internet device that can make phone calls wp7 is not an option.
Thanks your guy's insight. and you can tell i'm not a troll due to the fact if you look at my other topics started, I'm switching to verizon soon.
On the side note, for you wp7 people, do you guys go here for all your needs? like when I had an iphone i went to blah blah site, android is xda.
And I do flash A LOT. I almost wnat to break the habit. I liked cydia back on the iphone, I want the OS to be perfect, but if the apps arent, I want to fix that (thats what jailbreakign did me for the iphone)
I guess the main problem with windows 7 phones for me right now are:
No LTE? why not. If I'm going to Verizon shouldn't I get a LTE phone?
Pros:
I feel that it will give me "my life back". I'm not addicted to flashing phones, but it definately sucks that I probably send 30 mintes - hour a day scanning these forums about stuff and specs baout the "newest" phone. I see that wp7 phones aren't realized every 3 months, causing you not to regret your purchase.
Another question I have for the people who follow WP7 phones is, when are they going to release a new one for Verizon? Or ATT. But I think we are going to switch to Verizon.

What do you mean by making phone calls and browse the internet? Are you saying the browse cause it doesn't have 4g?
And phone calls: why is that?
All I can say is I moved from WinMo-Android-WP7-Android.
You will read alot of bull**** here about Android by WP7 maniacs btw.
I am one of those who wanted to use MS latest platform but discovered it's really not for me. Because even if the concept is really good and different, it's very limiting.
I wait to make my final judgement once I upgrade to Mango.
I think WP7 is perfect entry level OS, for people who are not crazy about the most advanced features. For less "business" or "pro" users it's perfect. It's for youngsters and people who don't need much but like reliability and simplicity.
Otherwise stay with Android because it's ahead in every regard.
So ask yourself why do you want to switch and what you expect from your future device.
@doministry: Moved to Android, yet still in the windows phone forums? Interesting.
I love these threads, though. They all end up the same in the end.
What most of us simpletons here, who are unable to fathom the depths of the advanced, Skynet-like Android, like about Windows Phone is that it's something new, something fresh. It's not the same ol' same ol' we've been accustom to from iphone and Android. Not that either of those two are bad. Actually, the opposite.
But, there's not really anything new there per se. Microsoft decided to go against the "Tried and True" and do something different. We will see in the long run if this pays off. But, every now and again, something comes along and changes our perceptions on what should be, the status quo as it were.
You ask about coming here for all your info. Well, come here in addition to going elsewhere. The problem here is that most are nerds and geeks thus they dig into things that most others wouldn't. Not many people care if you can reroute power from your phone to the dilithium crystals, and bleed some of that power out through the main deflector array. See? Nerd.
But, here at xda, if your phone doesn't do that then it's a failure. Let me clarify that. It's a failure to the Android fans whose phones are the best thing since Bell called Watson from the next room. There are actually quite a few of us that appreciate what Windows Phone has to offer, how far it's come, and how far it can potentially go.
Stick around for awhile though and you will find those who are quite informative and constructive. But, you'll also find those who come into every thread like this to tell you how much they dislike/hate/loathe/want to vomit on windows phone. Strangely, like moths to a flame, however, they continue to be drawn here. Which leaves me confused and makes me cry inside.
I am getting sick of that android fanboyism. I just want that forum section android free but no, in nearly every thread there are some people who have an android device and start to post negative things about WP7.
To the android using guys: In this section there are people who DON'T like android or other OS's for a reason!! So why the hell do you have the need to post your biased crap in here? I really don't understand this. Why don't you accept that some people like me like WP7? WHY???

In Android thread I am visiting there are tons of people who don't like it and it's not a problem for anyone really.
The other way round is not worse.
The scheme is like this:
WP7 lovers: "if you want to endlessly hack your phone and accept these lags, use Android"
WP7 critics: "we still miss this and that...."
What is really hard to understand for some is that some people use both platforms on regular basis and can really COMPARE them head to head. And this is the question here, COMPARISON. Times has changed, users are not devoted to one thing in their life anymore and are not treating their choices like a new religion. WP7 is still starting and appeared in a world of huge COMPETITION. If you don't know, the competition and comparisons makes things better, not the closed circle of believers. And that's why MS opened these polls where you vote for the feature you'd love to see.
Some people here are more MS than the company itself.
Hi GManLynx,
In my opinion Wyn6 and Dom both have valid points to make, Dom has voiced the fact that although WP7 is very capable as a daily driver (and it is my preferred O/S) it does seem to be limited for those of us that need specialised apps/functionality to be satisfied with our chosen platform. In the same light Wyn6 has it spot on that these forums do tend to be very geek based and arguments about granular functionality do get out of hand and turn the thread away from its original point, this thread will go that way in the end i promise...............keep an eye on it, its really quite amusing.
Anyway here is my penneth worth:
I have originally come from 6.5 where the flashing was both a delight and at the same time a chore, i then found myself being drawn to Android for the exact same reasoning and that was that i liked to play with and customise my phone to my liking. The hardware however at the time did not do it for me though and i found (as most people now realise) that with Android the hardware is the key for a great phone experience. This is now possible with all of the great droid handsets and the the apps available make the customisation side an absolute pleasure, although decent application coding is still an issue from time to time along with the possibility that the performance of any custom ROM you choose is entirely dependant on the trial and error application addition basis that 6.5 required. In my opinion this will always be the case with an open source platform.
Now with WP7 you get less chance to customise (although it is entirely possible) but the O/S is rather solid due to the fact that it is closed and that the apps that are released have been vetted so as not to afftect the functionality of the phone too much. This is also a plus point when it comes to the hardware that is required as you dont need the leading edge of available hardware to run the buttery smooth O/S. Improvements from Mango have made this even better in my opinion and have opened the door to better development opportunities and eventually better apps than are available at the moment, however i do stress the word eventually. WP7 is still very young and MS have some great things in the pipe that should make the O/S differ greatly from others......but again this will take time.
I could easily recommend droid or WP7 for you and i think you would be pleased, at the end of the day you will as Dom said have to decide what level of functionality vs customisation that you would prefer and go with that one. (this is easily done as all phone carriers now offer the 30 day cool down period, so you can evaluate both properly)
Try everything you can think of to aide your decision but most importantly have fun deciding, i know i did
Kind regards,
Creamy
