On my Netbook I use voipcheap's callback software for all my international calls or I go to their website to use this service. Would it be too difficult for one of you great software developpers to make a little application which would offer me the same service using my Touch HD without having to use a browser?

Which version Skype are you using?
Tks,
both the same! when you have a good voip program and a good provider for voip, than it's much better than skype! why? because it's cheaper to phone to people in foreign countries when you have a provider of the country you call to.
and when you need skype you have to pay for every bullsh... when you want to make calls not to a skype client you have to pay, when you want a mailbox you have to pay, when you want to recive calls not of a skype client you have to pay, ...
so i think voip is much better!

How do you go abount finding good providers? I live in US.
To add to what you said, I like convinience of voip where it integragtes with wm6 seemlessly. This way you could use voice command etc... and you don't need wired headset.

a good provider should have good prices, good sound quality and no disconnects or traffic problems while talking. besides there should not be a monthly fee, when you don't need a flatrate to talk
how i find a good provider?
first i search for a list with all voip providers in the hole state. than i think about where i wanna call cheaper and i compare some provider prices. when i have a list of providers with good prices i look for services they have. so some have a mailbox, or some have 50 free sms a month and others have cheaper hardware when you make a deal with them.
when i decided for 1 or 2 providers i search in the internet for reports of users, using the provider.
when this is to much work, there are some german sites on which you can compare a list of voip providers and as result of the search you get a grid with all providers which have that what you are looking for.
for example on this site you can compare voip providers worldwide http://www.voipreview.org/
Skype vs VoIP?
Sorry to be a nit-pick - Skype is VoIP. I think you mean:
Skype versus SIP (integrated with WM6) or
Skype versus H323
I'm not sure of the nitty-gritty of Skype, but most of the VoIP I've seen uses standard codecs over a real-time channel, usually using UDP e.g. G711, G723, G729, GSM etc. The difference here is the control plane i.e. SIP is text based markup versus Skype which is proprietary.
Personally I think the integrated SIP client in WM6 sucks. Its nice in the fact that its integrated with the dialler, but the support for G711 only/jump through hoops to get the provisioning working makes it a last resort for me. Counterpath has a good SIP client that even supports GSM, G729 but its a standalone app and not integrated into the phone.

I am not a developer myself, so this post is a suggestion for developers, for a WinMo app that would be very nice to have. (Or if it already exists, someone please let me know where.)
Formerly with Google Voice, to make a call to a telephone number (free to the US and Canada, charged elsewhere), one would tell Google Voice the number one is calling, and the number one wants to be called back on. In other words, one did not really make the call from the computer, but it would call you back to a phone number, and dial the other party.
The new Google Voice addin to Gmail works differently though, in that you can make the phone call directly from the computer, without it having to call you back to a phone. To use it one has to install a browser plugin.
I tried it with a few mobile browsers, and none worked. I don't think they make a plugin that will work with any mobile browser.
Rather than a plugin though--it might be nice to have a standalone Google Voice app that can do this, make the calls directly from the mobile device. (Not using the actual phone of the device, but only the internet connection.) In other words, similar to Skype Mobile, but utilizing Google Voice instead.
Is that possible? Or--does it already exist?
Hi all,
I am trying to get SIP Internet Calling working on my WM6.5 (Touch Pro2). I got to the point where it seemed to want to use my VoIP provider (Rynga - a Betamax Company) but then I just got a "Bing" sound and it then tried to call regularly via Vodafone.
So I don't know if I have something wrong in ipdialplan.xml or if there is some other issue. I read elsewhere that maybe I should not specify a STUN server. I only plan to use the SIP over wi-fi.
I assume the files I need are ipdialplan.xml, dnsapi.dll, voipphonecanvas.dll and rtcdll.dll and then get my sip settings into the \Windows\System\VoIP directory.
Can anyone suggest an alternative client to at least prove my sip details and handshaking my account with my provider ?
C
UPDATE: I downloaded and setup PortGo and got connected straight away so that verified that my SIP settings and Account Details were correct. I then followed a thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5963857&postcount=1647 which has a CAB to create the IPDialPlan.xml file. This is the real key part and if it's wrong, you're going nowhere. So once done (make sure to set the properties of ipdialplan.xml to read/write using Total Commander or similar)
So I now have VoIP using the HTC Dialer. However, using Sense on my phone, it's not too easy to turn off internet dialing if I just want to use GSM and so, I think i'll just stick with using PortGo when I want to use VoIP. With PortGo, it will use all your standard phone contacts so there's no great hassle is using this separate dialer.
I've assigned PortGo to the Send Key(Hold) so that gives me easy access to either dialer.
Did anyone ever manage to get the sound out via the regular ear speaker rather than via the rear speakerphone ?
C
So is it working properly and are you able to make phone calls using VOIP?
Yes, I finally got it working but it is too much hassle because every time I have wi-fi on, it wants to use ny VoIP account. My phone is a work one which I can use for limited personal use but I would only plan on using VoIP for personal calls. So it's far easier to use a separate app where I can decide when exactly I want to use the VoIP method. The PortGo application uses my same contacts as the standard HTC Dialer uses so I can just dial numbers exactly as is (without maybe using a code to place calls over VoIP instead of them using GSM or whatever.

What is the best setup you found for incoming/outgoing Google Voice VOIP calls on a (Sprint) Galaxy Nexus? Interested in apps that work very well over wi-fi only, not over mobile data.
I'm looking for something that has great voice quality and also integrates seamlessly with the native dialer so that when not on wifi it makes phone calls over the cell radio and when on wi-fi it makes VOIP calls using Google Voice.
I see pbxes.org mentioned a lot. Is it worth the trouble given that they store the GV password on their server and then from what I understand they have to re-code from the GV codec to whatever codec the SIP client on the phone negotiates with the pbxes servers - I hope my understanding of how it works is correct.
Other options I've seen mentioned: Groove IP, Spare Phone, Talkatone.
Not sure which approach works best, maybe the experts here can save me some research time.
And as a SIP client, what works well? I tried the native phone SIP client with a SIP VOIP service and it sounded terrible, not sure why the native one doesn't work well.
Thanks for your help.
I use groove IP no problems

Anyone else? What's your great Google Voice setup?
I use GrooveIP as well. But I really want to get my pbxes.org working on my call setting. That is what I am going to work on today.

Thanks, this is interesting but unfortunately it is too cumbersome to use by the person I'm setting up the phone for. I'd like a solution that's fully automated, use 1 dialer only (either native or a different app) that can smartly route calls via GV when on wifi (at home) or cell when not on wifi.
You can setup your PBXes account just like the tutorials (with SIPdroid) and then put the account info into the regular dialer. I think the extra steps to use the stock dialer were in a wiki somewhere or some external webpage (not on this forum).
You only need SIPdroid to create the free extension on PBXes and follow the tutorials to get all setup. Then you can go into the stock dialer and put in accountname-200, password, and then pbxes.org as the domain. You can choose to receive calls on wifi only or while on a data connection with a checkbox. I've heard that the codec used with the stock dialer isn't that great, though. It's one of those things you'd have to tryout for yourself.
One dialer to send and receive calls. It even lets you know if it's a data call or not. Maybe this is something you wanted to look into?
What SIP client pairs well with PBXes? I know the stock dialer SIP is very poor, I tried it with another SIP service and the call quality was mediocre, while their dedicated client worked very well, so at least I know it's not the phone hardware, it's the software.
I also read about potential latency issues with PBXes because they only have 1 server in NY. Is that still the case or the latency issues have been resolved? I guess in general I'm looking for a fairly reliable service though I'm prepared to accept occasional hiccups.

Mr.binglejellsx2 is almost correct. I have been deal with more than 15 apps to get best. create a account by using sipdroid. make sure you have got green dot and place one out going and incoming call via sipdroid. Exit sipdroid from your phone. go to pbxes.org and login under extension under sipdroid 200 (from left) than right, under device option retype your password. (means you are get ride of sipdroid and ready for new sip). in your phone open sipdroid and make sure your got yellow and exit. in your phone call setting, add new account, your username-200 password, server is pbxes.org under option make sure your port is 5060 and not uda must be tcp. hit back and your phone should say receiving call. If not working go to pbxes.org and re type password same extension and under personal data enter your password two times where required and submit start (means, you dont want sipdroid, the second sip and now ready for any new getaway which will be your native sip) this must work. I don't see best call quality anywhere. this is awesome especially for wifi. just like your carrier. I use this everyday for international call.. let me know if don't work. If works just enjoy..
Thanks for your reply. I've been using Groove IP with very good results over wifi (that's what I care about, Sprint 3G mobile data is so bad anyway that it can't carry a call). The paid Groove IP integrates nicely with the native dialer too, so the experience is good.

You are very welcome. Glad that you have got the good one. Good people always have good only..
Hello! The dual SIM version of the M8 does not have the possiblity to set up a SIP account with the native client of Android 4.4 (in contrast to the single SIM version). Thus I have installed the "SIP Switch Widget" from Google play store. This allows me to set up the SIP account and choose the method of dialing (asking before each call if I would like the mobile account or VOIP). Nevertheless if I choose IP-call the call is made through the mobile network. I guess that the phone app has been modified by HTC. The behaviour of incoming VOIP calls is as follows: The phone rings but I am unable to answer the call. Has anyone a fix for it or would develop a solution that the native Android client works? I would certainly pay for it because the native client drains less battery than 3rd party apps. Thanks a lot!
Hi markzh,
I am having the exact same issue. Just bought the M8 Dual Sim version and was quite disappointed not being able to use the native VoiP client on the phone.
Did you make any progress solving this issue?
Thanks,
Tito
