Dead P3300 due to battery? - P3300, MDA Compact III General

Hi all,
My two year old HTC P3300 has gone dead and I suspect it could be the battery. How could I know for sure? When it was new I upgraded to WM6 and apllied the corrupt SD patch because it was crashing sometimes when I would access the SD.
After that it has been working flawlessly for over a year except for battery life which has been getting shorter and shorter for the past few months. I turned off bluetooth and wifi and still the P3300 was only able to go for about 24H with normal usage (just four or five calls, a few reminders and no GPS).
All of a sudden a couple of weeks ago it started just turning off by itself when using simple things like card games. I could feel the battery was pretty warm and pressing the power button would do nothing. Only a soft reset would work.
Then a few days ago it finally decided to die. I was playing Freecell with the battery at about 80% and it turned off by itself but now even soft reset won't work. When I plug in the charger the orange light wont turn on althoug the battery does get a little warm.
The only thing it will let me do is start a hard reset but nothing much happens. It says to press send if I want to return the P3300 to the original factory settings. I accept and for about one seccond it shows:
Format FAT partition!
Format complete!
Then I get the HTC boot screen and some red letters that say:
IPL 1.36.0001
SPL 1.36.0000
and then nothing else happens. It just stays like that for a couple of minutes until it turns off by itself. After that I can't even do a hard reset unless I put the phone on the charger for a couple of hours.
To me this looks like it could be an exhausted battery but how can I confirm this without buying a new battery? I checked with a tester and I get 3.07V DC but I can't seem to get any amp reading (maybe I'm doing it wrong).
Please any ideas would be welcome. I love my P3300 and I hate the idea of having to change.

Hi!
I'm experiencing the same problems...
Tried new rom, sdhc update cab, format sd to fat32, try another sd, etc...
Seems that the phone works more or less well if there's no sd card (maybe because it need more juice from the battery?), and even better, if I can say that for a phone..., without sim card too.
It worked more or less today only with sim card on it, but when there was an sd card it keeps blocking, hanging and turning off with difficult turn on situation.
Can someone help us?
Thanks!

Hello both.
It can be frustrating waiting for help (and you might have found an alternative solution) but I'll say what I can.
If your Artemis can be operated more normally whilst charging but fails quickly under battery power, that certainly suggests a battery problem.
Batteries are consumables but hard to test (although some shops can) - try your local retailer?
My spare battery is a Sanyo ARTE160 rated 3.7V 1,200mAh.
On the reverse, 4.2VDC is printed amongst chinese characters and it actually measures 4.16V off load. I'd think 3V far too low.
There's clever technology behind the management of these LiOn batteries because both over charge and over discharge can damage them. Their life is more determined by battery chemistry and charge/discharge cycles than age.
One caution - measure voltage by all means...
BUT
DO NOT measure current with a test meter to a battery - particularly not a LiOn battery - because it amounts to a short circuit. Current can be so high as to blow the meter fuse and in cases of sustained short circuit or over charging, the battery can swell or even burst dangerously.
I'd think a replacement battery (via e-bay?) far less expensive than paying repairers to confirm the battery was the only problem.
Hope this helps

Hi!
I bought a replacement battery from Ebay.
All seems to be OK yesterday at night until today by noon.
Today, in the middle of a phone call, the phone stalls.
After a reboot and some hours later, the phone keeps crashing and crashing and, sometimes, it doesn´t turn on...
Will try now to upload an original rom and see what it does.
Regards!

This might have happened because difficulties whilst using an impaired battery left a legacy of part-saved data, registry and file corruption problems.
The outcome would be good to know because battery problems can/will affect us all eventually.
Also, a brand new battery can need a few charge/discharge cycles to bring it up to best condition.

I also got a new batery from ebay and unfortunately it still doesn't work. Behaviour is exactly the same as before.
I suppose this means it is hardware related. Do you suggest opening it up to see if there is anything loose or broken that could be resoldered?
Thanks,

My p3300 went blank and I had the take the battery out to switch it on again. Took it to HTC and they had to replace the insides of the phone. When I got is back the batt. Only lasted for a day and it use to work for 4 days.

hard reset when battery removed

hi! does anyone encounter this problem with their xda iis? whenever i remove the battery, even if it's fully charged, my phone performs a hard reset. as far as i know, the backup battery should last for about 20 mins. i tried removing the battery for about 5sec then put it back on and my phone still performs a hard reset. is this normal? tnx!
i'm having the same problem. mine does a hard reset too when the battery is removed. can anyone else verify this as a hardware fault (the backup battery not working)? i just got my unit 2 days ago and i want to bring it in for replacement. did you just get yours from globe telecom? perhaps they got a bad batch? i hope they have replacement units.
happens the same to me...
The battery release catch is the switch between the main battery and the backup battery.
If the contacts are dirty/loose, the phone temporarily is without both batteries, so hard resets.
Did you tried switching it off and then remove the battery.... or u un plug the battery directly?...
I am using it without any prob, gives me about 10mins...
found this earlier thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=18582&highlight=battery
from the looks of it, its a sorta common defect but a defect nonetheless. i'm gonna gun for a replacement unit. the thread does describe workarounds to the problem, but for me a defect is a defect and its going back.
besides, the workarounds require that you are plugged in. not much of a work around
and yea, i turn off the unit first (including the radio) before i detatch the battery. still goes hard reset on me. when i check back after the hard reset, the backup batt is at 100%, meaning it hasent kicked in. the one time that it reported to be not at 100% after a batt removal test, it still did a hard reset so i guess at that time it didnt kick in fast enuf so save the data

got mine from smart... didnt notice the problem until now... they only replace units for the 1st 2 wks... so i cant bring it back to smart anymore... got this last month...
Same problem on Imate JAM...
Like you, I have a Hard Reset problem with my JAM. The backup battery seems to be full under the Memory settings. But whenever I switch the JAM off (put into also flight mode) and remove the battery out for SIM exchange or just remove the battery to test for only just 2 seconds, after replacing and turning the device ON it starts to reboot the device from start as made a Hard Reset.
Everything (all data in Memory) is lost. I tried to search this issue on many forums but couldn't find any suggestions.
Have you found the reason why it does so?
I also tried firstly to Pull the red switch than take the battery out, but the same problem occured again. I dunno what the Red rubby switch is used for?
I think the backup battery is defected on most HTC products.
Even I tried leave the device without battery for one day long but the backup battery still seems to be %100.
I think HTC devices are still protypes and beta versions...
Good thread.. I was just about to buy a spare battery for my IIs, but if it hard resets everytime I pull out the battery, what's the point of a spare battery?
Will have to backup everything and do a test to determine if I have this 'defect'...
OK, after having an emailing adventure between me and IMate Technical service from ClubImate they decided that this issue could be a hardware problem. I guess most of these products have the same problem but becuase not everyone removes battery they don't know if this problem exist on their devices.
It has not been more than 25 days I bought this JAM. I am afraid this device can make more faults in the near future...
Does anyone have other fatal problems like these?
It happened to me when I first got mine too. Two ways I found that did not cause a hard reset.
1. Before removing the battery, make sure your device is plugged and charging.
2. Get one of those SPB software that has an option for "suspend" or turn off. Make sure the device is fully off before removing the battery.
Both ways worked for mine. Good luck on yours.
Thanks my firend,
I'll have a check. But I think SPB is just a backup application.
So you say, if removed battery on hard reset just Restore everything back?
Anyway, in a helpless situation this should work!
Try This!!!
I was having the same problem... even if i power it off and then remove the battery, it would still HARD RESET on the next boot. this problem seems to have gotten worse day-by-day, so I was advised by my service provider to get it repaired by HTC as I dont have insurance, As long as your phone isn't *nicked goods* you can go to
http://www.htceurope.com/
and log it in for repairs if its under guarantee of-course. if its out of warranty they may charge you.
hope this helps
I deciced to sell and get rid of this JAM. Coz there are more problems like low earpiece volume issue. And I am afraid there will come more. Maybe we've gotta wait for a real Brand to make a PDA/Phone?
Thanks a lot.

removing the battery
before i used to experience hard resets when i remove the battery, and upon checking the back up battery, it is still 100%.
i am now using the psshutxp application to turn off the device before removing the battery.
For 15 mins without the battery, my xda is using the back-up battery to avoid the hard reset. and upon checking in the memory/battery indicator, my back-up batt was already below 20%.
all the while i thought i do have hardware problems in terms of battery.
I have installed it thank you.
But when I touch Shutdown, it simply blanks the display and the lights on the phone are still working. Is that okay? I can also receive calls while the screen is blank...
Ok, I have downloaded that application. It acts like a read shutdown. Step by step I tried first to Shutdown, then removing the battery. But sorry again everyhting has gone.
Are you sure that yours was also making hard resets before using this application when renoved the battery?
shutdown
this app works for me. am running wm2003se. I can leave my device for 20 mins without the battery, and still no hard reset occurs. Lucky me huh?
Try searching other thread regarding this application.

Battery problems after hard reset

I need some advice/help. Here's the story:
My Dash with Kavana wm6.1 started giving me "out of memory" errors. At one point, I couldn't send text messages, and I opened CeleTask to see what was running. Nothing appeared in the list--no running programs, no free memory options, nada. So I rebooted the phone. Then it would freeze at the green Windows Mobile screen. Removed the battery, SD card, Sim card--still nothing. So I Googled the problem and found out how to do the hard reset (hold down both soft keys while pressing the On button, release, wait until DOS-like screen appears, hit any key).
Okay, phone did start up--but it reset the phone to default, wiped out memory and apps. Okay, no biggie. Got everything set up again. But here's the kicker: Whenever I spoke on the phone for, like, a half-hour, the battery charge would drop from 100% to one bar--maybe 28%??? And this is after just unplugging it! But when I plugged it back up again, the charge would read either 100% or somewhere close???
So my question is, could doing a hard reset have damaged the battery? Or is there some setting that I may have lost from the hard reset that messed up how the phone is monitoring the battery? I ordered a high-capacity battery (which was long-overdue anyway, because even before all this I got 8-9 hours of use out of the battery), so maybe the point is moot. But has anyone run into this before?

No that would not affect it, it sounds like you need a new battery. My personal opinion is if you do get a new battery to get an extended one off ebay for like 26 dollars with shipping... You will love this battery...
Here is the link to an extended battery off ebay which I myself own as well...
EXTENDED BATTERY LINK
Yeah, I ordered the 2200mAh extended battery last night, really looking forward to getting it...but I'm still wondering why this happened all of a sudden, right after the hard reset. I mean, what if I get the extended battery and (heaven forbid) I do a hard reset in the future. Do I have to look forward to the same thing happening?
I mean, I've read where the OEM Dash batteries were basically UGH--old, decrepit, underpowered. Maybe this was the last straw for the battery, I can buy that. But if it's something more, I just want to know that before I try a hard reset again, know what I mean?

i think even tho, when you do a hard reset especially, the phone is plugged in, the battery being crap to begin with, certain actions, draining actions such as a hard-reset, just kicks the battery off the cliff.
If your battery is about a year or so old then I believe it might just have been it's time. Now this is just my opinion but I always flash my phones to another Rom only when the battery is 100% charged. I've heard similar problems with other phones in the past. I also noticed if you have your email settings to update or check your email every 10 minutes or a newsfeed reader checking ever so often you are going to get ridiculous drain on your batteries. So, in other words it could be a number of reasons why your battery drains. It's just checking those settings. Timeout settings etc... So, in other words try a number of things to see if that's the issue.
The general drain issues, yeah, I use ActiveSync to my company's OutLook webmail services and that's going constantly; plus I check my Yahoo! Mail like every 10 minutes. But that was prior to this and I got 8-9 hours of use out of a fresh 100% charge. Plus, I constantly keep the phone plugged to one laptop or another using a USB cable. I have noticed recently that it seems to drain relatively quicker (maybe 4-5 hours) after keeping it plugged up all day. But this half-hour thing was just ridiculous. All in all, I accept that the hard reset probably helped the battery kick it, but that it was already on its way out.
And the good thing, of course, is that if I have to do a hard reset again, I will pop in the original crappy battery, to do it with. No harm, no foul that way...
I'll let you know how the extended battery works. Thanks, everyone.

Radio turns off on low battery

Hi,
My radio turns off on low battery, does anyone know how to disable that?
it sucks to see ur phone chargining without knowing the radio was off.
Thanks
does anyone know how to stop it? i searched and i can't find the reg setting for it.
also, when i have the phone on silent, when my call gets disconnected it makes a loud beeping noise and hurts my ears. does anyone know how to disable it?
thanks
Men! obviously!
Obviously it becomes off cause the critic procedure is to cahrge the batt as soon as it can cause the batt may Die... so when you got more tha 15% perform a softreset, then enable again on comm manager the phone on or turn off the airplane mode...
Ray_jai? Are you in LALILULELO foxhound project?
try it men!?
i know, but sometimes it foes down to 5% and I don't know or forget the radio is disabled. I plug it in and let it charge, then for the whole day people kept missing people's call.
can i just disable it?
Thanks
mmmm ts dangerous to let your batt reach the limits! like 5%
I think you cant change that... it must be a high prior thingie... if you let die your batt it becomes hard to resurrect it men!
That sucks, even soft reseting the phone does not restore the radio, I need to charge it, reset it, then enable it again then reset it again, or my internet won't connect.
Thanks
can someone please help me figure out a fix? theres no point in enabling this, the phone shuts off 5 seconds after the radio goes off anyway.
Yes i can always charge the phone to prevent shutdown, but I'm never near an outlet where i work. I'm always moving around. and when i take the train home, the phone usually runs out of battery by then.
Thanks
Carry a spare battery, they're pretty cheap now... When you see the battery getting to about 20% replace with a new charged battery.
You shouldn't let your battery go past the 10% mark anyway as it may cause problems...
Cheers...
but when i remove my battery, My time resets to the date the rom was cooked.
That's strange, never had that problem...
Maybe you can find an emergency external battery, seen them around, they use AA batteries to charge your Hermes and can be used anywhere. They do get hot though due to the massive drain and the batteries are good only for 1 shot.
Cheers...
Or you could look for one of the extended batteries. I use my phone for work, and can make many calls a day, use it with my bluetooth gps (it will be on constant for up to an hour), I look things up in pdf files, and do excel and the occasional word file, email, and text messages. I don't think I have ever ran the extended battery below 50% in one days use!
@ Ray_jai:
When I first got my phones (Hera100 & Hermes 100) I let both come up to a full charge and then let then drain down to empty, to make sure the battery would not have a dead space when it recharges. Make sure if you get a spare battery you do the same so it won't discharge prematurely while using your phone.
Now I don't understand about the radio because i've never had that happen to me but I do get about 5 hours of talk time since I've had both phones and yes-I let the batteries drain completely. I usually have video viigo ie and the camera apps (one up and the rest in the background) until it shuts itself off and then install the backup battery. If the date rolls back, just put it back (along with the time of day of course).

[Q] Defy randomly dying

My defy is barely 2 months old, i am running CM7.1 since it was released and its quite smooth with no problems till now.
But recently i went to a remote place (i made another post somewhere) and switched SIM cards, i switched back SIM again now. Since then, my defy randomly dies sometimes while holding it and most times while in my pocket. My battery percent looks fine (i wiped it just in case).
This happened to me several times, i suspected the battery was loose, so at the beginning i reinserted my battery 2-3 times and it would start again. But now even after reinserting the battery it refuses to turn on, i usually need to connect it to a charger (or USB) and after the LED light turns on, i can switch it back on, disconnect it and use it again.. until it dies again randomly.
I tried inserting a piece of paper as padding to prevent the battery from moving, but didnt help much. When i shake it a bit, it dies too, so it might be a loose battery or some hardware problem, but the reason im baffled is why i cant turn it on again without connecting it to a charger, and also why it dies randomly when i leave it alone and didnt even touch it. Also, i never dropped it even once or mishandle it at all to make the battery be loose, when i insert tha battery, it still snaps/click into place just like when it was new.
ANy help suggestions will be appreciated. Sorry for the long post, just wanted to provide a detailed account.
I found an almost similar problem but no answer here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1109429
Firstly, check if your setVsel settings is all ok and not too low down specially the voltages settings. If you're not using SetVsel, then check your 2nd-ini in system - overclock settings, see if it enable and check those individual settings which might be too low that caused the phone under power/voltage and triggered self shut down.
Another option to narrow down your issue is trying another battery. Buy or borrow from a friend. If the case of random shut down still occur, then it might be hardware issue in your Defy mainboard. BUT.. I would flash it to another rom to make 100% sure before sending it back to the shop.
Thanks a lot for the reply, im not sure if its an overclock or vsel issue because it even dies sometime while booting up if i move it around, so im guessing battery or mainboard issue?? Ill have to check with another battery first then... hoping its not a mainboard issue coz the nearest service centre is miles away from where i live

HTC One M8 Battery Suddenly Dies, Randomly Shuts Off

Hello,
I bought a used T-Mobile HTC One M8 a couple of days ago off of eBay. While it's a cool phone, I've had a serious issue with the battery. When plugged in, the phone works fine. However, after being charged for several hours and removed from a power source, the battery will read 100%, slowly dying to around 96% or so with use, and then shut off randomly without warning only a few minutes after being taken off the charger. It won't give the normal "shutting down" message; instead, the battery will go from whatever percent it was to 0% and then the screen will go black.
From what I've seen online, the battery might be bad. s suggest that this problem results in an inflated battery. In this M8, I noticed that the left edge of the screen was almost separated from the metal bezel as if something was pushing it up from behind. This makes me think my battery might be bloated, causing the battery issue and pushing up the screen.
I have tried wiping the phone before flashing Lineage OS instead of the stock ROM, fully charging the battery up, and fully discharging the battery, but nothing so far has worked. Do you have any tricks I could try that might fix this if it is a software issue? Or does this seem like a bad battery that would have to be replaced?
If the battery is bad, the M8 doesn't make it easily removable, so I would either have to take the phone apart or send it in and possibly pay someone to replace it. The previous owner said it was working fine, but I have yet to hear his reply to my eBay message asking about the issue. He included all of the original packaging, including the original limited warranty. While the warranty is probably long expired and technically doesn't transfer over reselling a phone, do you think there is any chance that HTC or T-Mobile might be willing to fix the phone or send a different one?
Thank you for any help you can provide.

Flash t mobile RUU (software problems will slove with this ) . If the issue still there ,then it must be a hardware issue i.e faulty battery or some other.
Sent from my XT1526 using Tapatalk
The battery in my M8 is really weak now, and as of maybe 6-9 months ago the phone is not tracking the battery level well. When the phone is idle, it powers off at 20-30% indicated charge remaining, with games active, maybe it will power off at 45%. I get 1 hour PoGo from a _full_ charge.
Previously, I've experienced the phone getting hot when charging (mainly in the car) and this has probably had a serious impact on the battery capacity. Assuming the phone you have is over a year old, you should assume the battery is badly aged by now.
my adorable M8 in his third year of use recently has the same symptoms of @tshoulihane. Is necessary to say that I've took so much care in his first 2 years like disconnecting the battery after few minutes of reaching the 100% (also voiding to charge all the night) or turning off the phone at 10% and I never be waited for the auto turn off at 0%. All this that I'm telling you is in the first 2 years. In this third year of using the m8 as my main phone, I received this bad symptoms doing the opposite of the first years of care. Now I just connect powerbank or something at 30% to void awkwards sudden death of battery. Mmm I have plans to keep 1 year more my m8 with me, it still a beast in camera, sound and no lag, so I'm looking for a battery replacement im Amazon but the reviews are bad, I think is very difficult to get a good *new* battery because that replacements get old too with the years of storage... mmm I don't know but this was my little story with my battery experience with M8. Regards guys.
