i have a Vodafone VPx now and all has been great, however yesterday it reckoned the battery charged from 8% to 100% in 10 mins, i left it on the cradle over night, and now the device doesn't show any signs of life apart from a red charging indicator. I took the battery out and metered it, shows up at 3.72 Volts, so battery holds charge. What can i do to get the device to power again?

I'm not an expert but I would suggest to leave the device in the cradle and try to boot it when charging it. In this way you can decide whether it's a battery or some other malfunction. Maybe the internal backup battery needs to be replaced, but I don't know if it would let the battery indicator LED to blink...
I replaced my battery because it showed that it's fully charged but when uncradled the device won't connect to bluetooth devices or regularly drops the connection, it even resets itself although the indicator displaying full charge. Now everything is OK. You may consider buying a new battery if it's older than 2-3 years, but first test if that causes this behavior.

actually i'm experiencing the same thing..
my BA if used to connect to wifi, not more than 5 minutes it will hang with the screen goes blank.. so is it because of my internal back up battery that needs to be replaced or my main battery that need to be replaced?
FYI, backdays before, i got notification that my internal battery runs dry..
Ive just bought a BA off ebay and it came with 2 batts, but 1 of the batts keeps causing the BA to turn off evern if the batt is fully charged.. odd hey?
speedy2009, I think that one was the original battery bundled because it has no value any more so the seller sent it with the machine, all in all it's not a bad device for it's years.
jilaxzone, don't know how to test this, because sometimes the device gives false alarms, I would take it to a PDA shop and let them replace the internal battery as this is cheaper than the main battery.
Also Ive figgered out that if the backup battery is low, it gets charged up from the main battery.
Should everything be lost from the memory once the backup battery runs out? Cos I did try this morning, taking the main batt out and left the phone for about a hr. When I put the batt in, even tho windows said the backup batt was completely empty, it still had all my info in windows??
Hi, the backup battery is responsible for the time and date. The other functions of it are unknown to me. Fortunately the ROM storage is not lost when the battery drains completely

If thats the case theres no real reason for a backup batt cos it only takes a few secs to alter time and date, like on a normal mobile phone.

Man, I hate starting new threads! I did a simple search and couldn't find this problem anywhere else, so here goes:
Earlier in 2009 I bought an extended 2400mAh battery for my Kaiser (8925). Everything is working just fine, except that I noticed that the phone doesn't seem to notice that the battery life is much better for this new battery.
What I mean is: after a few hours of usage, the battery level drops at a normal rate.
Once the phone tells me the battery is almost dead (and sometimes the phone will shut off if I ignore this), I can shut down the phone, remove the battery, wait a few seconds and then replace it and boot back up the phone.
At this point, the phone will usually tell me that the battery is at 33% to 36% charged. Notice that I did not charge the battery, I just removed it and put it back in.
When I first got the battery, I cycled it completely three times in the phone, removing it twice and replacing it to ensure that the battery was completely drained before charging it to 100%. (Yes, I know that is only recommended for metal-hydrates, but I feel better doing that anyway).
On the top-end, it usually takes about two hours to charge the phone from 30% to 99% via a standard USB2.0 connector.
However, the phone will report that the battery is not fully charged for nearly an hour after reaching 99%.
I know what you are probably thinking; Why is this guy complaining about his battery performing better than his phone reports?
Well, it IS kind of annoying. I would like the phone to properly report the remaining percentage for my own benefit. I really hate having to guess at how much time I have left before I need to drop it off at a computer or wall outlet while I find something else to play with for three or four hours.
So... Does anyone know how I can convince my phone that the battery is pretty awesome and to start reporting the actual battery life?

I have an Imate PDA2k that I wanted to revive.
I bought an extended battery from ebay (item number 360240003003)
When the battery arrived, I placed it in the phone and tried to charge it. Nothing happened. The phone's led did not turn orange or green.
I figured maybe because the battery is over 2x the capacity of the original, the phone may not be able to charge it.
Ok no problem, I'll stick the battery on the separate battery charger.
The light turns on (indicating that it is charging).
After the battery was charged, I put it back in the phone and the phone turns on. Problem is the battery meter does not measure how much power is left and automatically turns off the screen within 30 seconds regardless of the settings i put in.
I've tried increasing the time to turn off the screen to 5 minutes, nothing.
I've tried reflashing the phone with different versions of WM, (I tried wm2003, wm6.1, wm6.5) nothing.
I even tried Qtopia linux. That one did not recognize the battery but it did obey it's own configuration regarding when to dim and turn off the screen. (Then again it locks up after a few hours which is a problem for a different discussion)
So my question / request is: Is there a battdrvr.dll or battery.dll that can report to windows mobile that the battery is full?
At this point, I really don't care if the report is accurate as long as windows doesn't turn off the screen after 30 seconds. I'd be satisfied if the battery reported 100% all the time (hard coded in there).

Unfortunately, if Windows believes it is about to run out of juice, it will turn off, regardless of how much charge you believe your battery has. My advice to you would be to return the battery since it obviously has an issue (my guess is that whoever made it, didn't follow the pin out diagram properly )

and the capacity of the battery should not matter to the charger. i use a 3600mah battery that charges just fine (except that it doesn't go in the cradle, neither front, nor back, because it is too thick)

Is there a way to hard code a value in the battdrvr.dll file? So that way I could break the battery meter in essence and hard code a value to satisfy windows (i don't care if the power runs out without warning at this point)?

Not to my knowledge... I don't know if Chef may have something to add, but rather than messing with drivers, I would simply buy a new one off eBay (much simpler fix). Keep in mind that if it isn't wired properly, it might end up damaging your BA... personally, I wouldn't risk it.
let's assume messing with the drivers would be possible and maybe even easy and you could disable the battery meter and set a permanent number, these are the two outcomes:
1. you'd set the permanent number to 100, device would never switch off (achieved), but it would also never charge! every time you want to charge the battery, you'd have to switch off the device and take out the battery for external charging.
2. you'd set the permanent number to 99, it would never stop charging and so the battery would heat up (remember it is not an original one, even higher risk) and after some time, it could explode! remember the apple battery issues? where users reported, their phones and notebooks would never report a full battery, so it kept charging until it actually exploded, not just breaking the battery (of course) but also the device.
i would agree with egzthunder, that your best choice is buying another battery.

Wow! I personally didn't even think about all that! But Chef is absolutely right, the battery can explode if you charge it beyond its limits.
Well that's exactly what I'm doing now. The phone doesn't charge the battery anyway. I have to pull the battery out of the phone every 4 days to charge it overnight in a separate charger. So option #1 would be ideal for me.
Don't suppose you have any hints on how I could do that?
Although you're right about the 99% scenario. Indeed it would try to charge it past its actual limit.

So, I'm on my Evo today, playing a game (Air Strike). My battery is at 93% when I picked the phone up to play, and the phone is plugged in. Suddenly, with no warning what-so-ever, my phone shuts off. Of course a mini-freak out and many "wtf's" ensue. No warning, no signs, even the led went off. I pulled the battery, put it back, then plugged the phone in again. After that it gave me the blinking light indicating the battery was too low to turn on. After a few minutes charging she came back on and battery was at 5%.
How the hell does a battery go from 93% to 0% in less than 5 minutes, and give no warning at all?? Anybody else ever have this problem?
Wow I've have never heard or that happening before. Maybe a glitch in the battery stash? Did it take awhile to charge up to 100%? Can you reproduce the issue again?

I had this problem with my older phone once. The battery itself may have a problem or your phone is not getting charged properly.
Try These :
1) Try charging the phone overnite from the Wall charger (Not through USB of your computer)
2) If the above does not work, and you have access to another evo battery, then try using that.(try using a friends battery and charger for a day. ) (Ofcourse needless to say the charger and battery must be for Evoonly )
In my case, my phone started working fine again after getting my battery & charger replaced.
Probably shouldn't worry about it too much just yet. Could be something as simple as your battery meter was mis-calibrated. The meter itself is software so it can easily be wrong/off. If it continues you may have a bad battery.
Sounds to me like something is wrong. Did you just get the phone or have you had it?
Idk... The phone had been plugged in for most of the day (hadn't gone anywhere. Lazy day lol) And like I said, the led went completely out as well.
Haven't had the problem again, so we'll see I guess....

I've seen some posts about the Evo battery shutting off the charge when its being used. Were you using your Evo while it was charging?
If the battery doesn't seem to be giving you percentages that are accurate, you might want to recalibrate your battery.

If you're experiencing higher than normal battery drain, try the following:
1. Charge the phone to full battery; let it keep charging until the battery says it is fully charged. Do not just wait until the light is green, it isn't always fully charged, causing a lot of inaccuracies. (You can check by going to: Settings -> About Phone -> Status -> Battery Level = Full.)
2. Boot to recovery and wipe battery stats.
(To have the most accurate of battery stats, reboot the phone immediately after wiping the battery stats and wait for your ROM to boot completely to the desktop. Once your entire boot is done and you have full access to the phone, go ahead and pull the charger and continue.)
3. Do not charge the phone until after draining the battery completely, resulting in it automatically shutting off. Take out the battery, and keep trying to turn on your phone until it will not turn back on at all.
4. Recharge the phone completely and then use as you normally would.
This is a method that has been proven to work, I am sure there are other ways. My battery lasts longer after doing this and the reading is much more accurate. It might be advisable to do this after every ROM install if you want the most battery life and most accurate battery reading by the phone's software.

So after some time I've been battling with my battery life through the day. Few months back it was great, Id easily get a day no problem! Then I found I had a wakelock issue and had that fixed.
I now suddenly have almost multiple things going on at once but first a small back story.
Went to bed one night and had it plugged into the wall. Went to bed at 60% and woke up and my phone was down to 6%. I thought, well the usb port is bad or the cable. Took it into the sprint store, they of course say "it looks like its charging just fine, the light is coming on" (the light was on during the night too).
They checked the battery and they said it was bad. Im wanting to take it to another store and have them check, because either: they didnt want to replace me with a new phone or replace the usb port if thats bad.
1) Bad battery- in a matter of 30minutes (during my lunch break at work) my battery dropped from 63% to 14%- only used 3g for facebook and sent 2 text messages. And my phone is undervolted and underclocked
2) Possible bad usb port- I plug my phone in all day at work, and 90% of the time the screen is off. The % of the battery doesnt increase, but maybe decreases slightly (I have data and everything turned off while at work because I get no data signal).
3) wakelock- so suddenly I'm getting a huge percentage of system usage of 54% in my battery stats. A few months back it was maybe 1%? I flashed the .img that sets the wimax, PRI, NV, etc to what fixed the issue back then. Im just confused how this has come back now when I havent even updated anything related only my rom (MIUI 1.8.26).
So I've ordered 2 2000mah batteries off ebay- I wasnt going to pay $40 from a battery story across from the sprint store (as they didnt have any stock, only extended batteries).
If anyone has had a similar experience, or would know what is the culprit would love to get feedback. Hopefully I can get this fixed soon. Maybe just a trial and error.
Something really strange just happened. I checked my phone just now and the battery is at 98% and just maybe 30minutes earlier it shut off because of low battery
What I explained before about using my phone on my lunch break was only 2 hours ago and showed 16%.
I always wipe my battery states when I update my ROM or install a new kernal.

Don't wipe battery stats if you don't have a full battery, it'll keep your battery from charging fully.
It may be the battery, but since you're getting new batteries you'll know then. If you didn't get an external charger, I'd suggest doing so. That way you can guarantee that your extended batteries get a full charge, and you can switch out a dead battery with a fully charged one if you keep having problems. The usb port on the Evo is crappy anyway, but if the light comes on and stays on & you can transfer data through the usb port then I doubt that's the problem.
It could be hardware failure, but wait until you get a new battery and have properly calibrated to come to that conclusion.
In the meantime download Battery Monitor Widget, that should show you your true battery capacity even if the system will not. You don't have to use the widget, you can just open the app. Once you see that your battery is fully charged, calibrate your battery properly. Wipe battery stats at 100%, let it drain until it shuts off, charge to 100% without breaks, and you should be good to go.

BMW has the feature to wipe stats. I also recomend to look at the reports and judge when the battery is full by looking at mV. 4200mV is full charge. Then wipe stats FIRST, then unplug and run down completely, then recharge fully with out unplugging.

You know what I realized what might be the issue? Back a few weeks ago, I bought an extended battery to use to take videos at a concert. At that point I wiped the battery stats at 100% of the 2500mah or so battery..

My desire, after:
an inability to restore nandroid backup
a possible corrupted sd card
a usb brick and inability to mount some nand partitions
and finally succeeding in fixing it, now using/running:
2.29.405.5 stock rooted rom
a new sd card (samsung 16GB class 6)
clockworkmod 2.5.0.7
s-off
seems that has battery issues. When it reaches below 30%, it drains a lot faster. In example few minutes ago, the battery was below 30% level and after sending a couple of sms messages the phone, without the "Connect the charger" indication shut down. Not even the battery icon was red.
What should I do?
After flashing the above ROM I ran an app called battery calibration (could this be the culprit?).
I haven't experienced such problems before the whole mess mentioned above.

Well, it seems to me like a "classic" battery meter calibration issue.

Regarding the matter of battery wear because of complete discharges, Li-Ion batteries do indeed have a lower cycle count than old-school batteries, but the standard charge/discharge number a Li-Ion battery can take is ~350, so you can't damage the battery pack by doing a full cycle per month (required to keep the battery meter accurate).

Did this work you mate? I have the same issue with my year old batter now... the phone shuts down @ 40% without any warning... and when I charge it, it starts from 0% and as soon as it hits the 58% mark, it jumps to 100% by itself... and i cant seem to figure out what the hell could I do to fix it... I tried calibrating the battery using the awesome method described here http://forum.cyanogenmod.com/topic/11823-battery-calibration-thread 3 times and nothing changed...

Weird that after calibration you still get that kind of issues, does this only happen on your current ROM? I have the latest CM in my desire and everything works just fine... Maybe try another ROM if calibration doesn't work to see if it's a hardware or software issue
i actually had issues with MIUI first.. the phone randomly shut down by itself but when i turned it back on, it was perfect... then i switched back to Oxygen and while everything was fine, suddenly one day the phone died at 40% :S and from that day on the phone charges to 58% and then instantly jumps to 100%... and as soon as it gets to 40% it shuts down itself... i guess i need a new battery but i wanted to see wether i can fix this one somehow so i can use it till the new one arrives...

phone turning off at 20% is fine mate because thats the battery guards against any damage
most of the phones ( smart phones) switch off at 20% as going lower can damage the System .
It shouldnt normally..It's supposed to work fine upto 5%
