Dash getting 3G Boost - HTC Excalibur

Seems like the Dash is going to get fitted for 3G speed. How will they do that? Firmware update OTA? How will it affect Dash's with cooked ROMs?
http://www.intomobile.com/2009/05/04/t-mobile-dash-getting-much-needed-boost-to-3g.html

what will they think of next?
Wow! A firmware upgrade that will modify the radio electronics so that all of our Dash's will do 3G speeds! HTC must have embedded nanobots in our phones when they built them. Pretty cool!
In other news, send 99.95 to my PayPal website and I'll send an OTA upgrade to your male parts to enlarge them.

No one will know @ the mo it's just speculation anyway, but since it says kit then maybe? But i very much doubt that they are going to push out a new load of Dash's since the new HTC models are going to faze out olders a.p.u.

That doesn't make any sense after all this time, that they would want to make the dash even better, when they are planning to have all these new phones coming out. In my opinion that would make buyers buy a cheap $50 dollar Dash with 3g instead of a $300 to $400 dollar Snap or Rhodium, specially in this economy where everyone is trying to save money.

I think you guys are all misinterpreting the screen shot. I think T-Mobile was at one time referring to the Snap as the "Dash 3G"...that's all. No one's going to upgrade the Excalibur to 3G.

exactly why make a phone "better" when u can make a whole new one

Well why would T-Mo refer to it as the Dash in the screen shot and not "Snap"? Are they renaming "The Snap" to "Dash 3G" for T-Mo? I noticed further down they said "T-Mobile Dash Black" for the black ver of the orig phone, but isnt that phone 3G too? IDK, just thought the article was interesting and was sharing!

No!
HTC Snap was the final release name. Before that it was called HTC Maple , Dash 3G , Excalibur 3G. And the Tmo Black Dash is not a 3g device.

Dude (or dudette) Its the HTC S522, Snap, Maple, MAPL100, 3G Dash or any one of the many other names it has been called during the development process. It is NOT our dear little T-Mobile Dash, it is a wholly new device that will most probably be released under T-Mobile as either the Dash II 3G or the Snap.
The Black Dash is nothing more then a face lift it has nothing new inside its little shell.
Since we have been talking about this new device for about 4 months now, I have to ask.. where have you been?

it's a kit!!
ok so i hear y'all scepticism, but umm while i kinna agree with it, why is it that every other device in the screenshot is referred to by their names only yet the one with the dash say "dash 3g kit" i dunno but that kinda sounds like it "could" sound like an upgrade. . .

First, nice int3rwebz typz0rz wit miszpellzings.
Second, how would they upgrade a phone that does not have a 3g radio receiver to magically pick it up?
The Snap is HTC's new edition of the Excalibur (or rendition I suppose), so TMO could be calling it the Dash 3g, like they rebranded the Excalibur to the Dash.
Unless they plan on selling a external 3g antenna that plugs into the usb port, I doubt it, even though I doubt the whole idea of having an edge phone evolve to receive 3g.

On a funny-ish note:
Your Dash is trying to learn 3g, but it can only learn 4 moves. Should your dash forget a move to learn 3g? Dash forgot Windows Mobile and learned 3g
Win?

Ok, now I just think you are playing dumb.
1. All packaged devices from T-Mobile are called 'kits', its not that hard to figure out.
2. Did you not notice that the HTC G1 is also called a 'kit' as well as the Black Dash??
3. You cant upgrade our current HTC Dash's to 3G.. it is a hardware thing NOT a software thing. How many times do you need to be told this?

ok let clear things up, if you all read my comment properly you would have realized that i am also very skeptical about the "software update". i was simply making the observation that the way the system is referred to as a "kit" is different from how the other "htc kits" are referred to, jus an observation!!! jeese!!

The Rumored T-mobile Dash 2

How many of you hope that when/if T-mobile brands this phone it isn't the Cavalier but some entirely new phone?
hopfully not for awhile cuz i just got the dash 3 months ago.
I wouldn't mind the S630 at all.
Where did you hear this... rumour ?
I don't think it will be a Cav, unless the Cav has about double the battery life and is 3G ready. Trying to predict the future from reading Gizmodo/etc. and biweekly Tmobile chattings, I think it doesn't cut the mark for what Tmo US has planned.
However, if they did push it, it would probably get the Cav in widespread circulation enough to get it some decent development, which it currently lacks. Until it is popped wide open, I'm not interested.
So I think the Cav is not the Dash 2. And I think the Shadow 2 will be around looong before a Dash 2. My two cents, now 100% off, one night only.

I dont know what kind of "development" you're expecting for the Cavalier. I mean... it's a standard smartphone... it's a Dash on steroids. What makes it so special that the current applications developed for landscape smartphones, wouldn't work on it ?
T-Mobile in the US needs to step their game up. Our phones out here suck. When I first got my Dash about a year ago I was one of the only people I knew who had it. Now I see it everywhere because they haven't released anything good. Nothing new. Who wants a Smurf looking phone or a the Shadow (looks cheap)? If there is a new smartphone or PDA from HTC I can't wait to see it for T-Mobile. Does anybody know a loophole I can slip through to get my hands on a T-Mobile UK phone without paying $600?

I don't see why people have such a problem with the Cavalier! It's an awesome phone. We all love our Excaliburs...and from what I understand, the Cavalier is nothing but a "next-gen" Excalibur. That's a good thing...right? If the Dash 2 is the Cavalier or isn't the Cavalier--either way I'm anticipating it's release.

I'm not hating on the Cavalier. I've only heard that all the new smartphones Tmobile US is interested in have to have a much longer talk time on WiFi than, for example, the Dash. Since the Cavalier is similarly sized, I suspect it is similar in battery life. And I am not aware of it being 3G, which they have said all the new high-end phones will be.

Well the cavalier ( at least the ones sold in the UK and japan ) have 3g , dont know if its UTMS or HSDPA. but the only complain people have is the battery life on the device. Since it includes a more robust 400mhz proc (made by samsung i think?) and includes 3g It is naturally have a shorter battery life. (unless they have found another battery with more "juice" to offset the extra power and bandwidth)

The Cavalier is buggy and not worthy to succeed the Dash.
http://pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=reviews&id=977
They should have at least kept the rounded corners.
Cavalier is not significantly better
I bought Cavalier a few months ago to be used on T-Mobile network. I ended up selling it and keeping the Dash. Here is my impression:
- The phone did not feel fast despite the processor, because the O/S was not optimized for it.
- Battery drained in 1 day or less depending on usage.
- T-Mo does not have 3G, so internet was about the same.
I am honestly getting tired of the JOGGR. Makes me want to get another phone. However, I like the HTC's and I do not want a touchscreen device.
Thanks guys, for all the insights and opinions on the Cavalier. I honestly thought it would be just as good (if not, better) than its predecessor... I've been playing around with the thought of getting an unlocked Cav from Best Buy's website, but after reading all these posts--I'm not so sure...

New Excalibur in black ?!

I read this article on BGR today about a "color refresh" TMobile put out recently. Does anybody have one of the black Dash's ?!
http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2008/12/22/t-mobile-dash-in-black-floating-around/
i've seen this story posted on engadget & pocketnow. interesting. i hope it's true & has 3g support ;-)
Well if you read the comments, people say it's JUST a color update and nothing more. It's still cool and I wouldn't mind owning one
Its just a color refresh. Nothing new except different color and slightly different color keyboard color. My local T-Mo has them, frankly they look like crap I was very disappointed.

I've had a chance to manhandle the fake demo phone we got at my T-mo store, and it's a pretty alright cosmetic change. I don't like my companies logo on my Dash, and have been contemplating scrubbing it off; but with the new Dash it doesn't work because of the rubber face, and that pink T REALLY sticks out on the black.
From what I've been told, and what we're expecting, it's going to be windows mobile 6.1. We should have the real phones unboxed soon (my manager won't let us TOUCH them until the original phones are gone ((one left!!)) so we can't see it).
SO if it is, we all should have an official windows mobile 6.1 rom from T-mobile soon, and hopefully it'll clean things up.
I would love for someone to debrand it after they dump it though. Just a thought.
Keep you guys posted!

It looks like it is confirmed Windows Mobile 6.1:
http://thetechnicist.typepad.com/the_technicist/2008/12/tmobile-dash-black-hands-on.html
(as reported today by Engadget and The Technicist).
The biggest question now is if it comes with the sliding panel homepage. The screen shot printed on the fake phone, and these screens, still show the Windows Mobile Default Homescreen.
The other big thing I'm hoping you awesome modders can do is rip the UMA drivers out of the upcoming UMA Shadow II. If we can get an official Tmo 6.1 with hotspot calling I'd declare it a Happy New Year next month.
thetechnicist is claiming that the Dash is outdated, but we don't have 3g in my area yet, so the little bugger is still a piece of gold IMOP, especially over crackberrys as long as I get that UMA.
Hrm
So if this updated Dash has WinMo 6.1 would there be away to get a somewhat official rom to put on our original Dash(s)?
My fiance actually has one. It by default does not have the sliding panel home page. When she get's home I'll see if it's available on there at all. Looking at the frequencies on the box, 850, 900, 1800, 1900, I don't think it's 3G (1700 is what tmo is using?). From what I can tell it truely is unchanged hardware wise.
I didn't think it was 6.1 at all since it didn't have the instant messanger styled text messaging interface, or is that a different app baked into the 6.1 firmware I put on my Shadow? Anything else anyone wants me to look at? Any certainty if flashing it with any of the 6.1 firmwares will work?
Edit:
Phone is home, it is not 6.1.
What version of 6.0 is it running?

It's finally here (march '09). Excalibur replacement

Since we saw a couple of weeks ago htc's '09 roadmap, I've been waiting to find more info on the HTC S511 'Cedar', and it looks they are finally here.
PDAdb.net just added the (incomplete) specs for the device.
Can't wait for it to be released, and I'm hoping that some local carrier gets it ASAP.
What are your thoughts?
There's no info yet on the battery or weight, whatsoever, but if the stock battery doesn't get me throught the day I won't mind changing for a high capacity one as long as its form factor is similar to the dash one.
Looks good, i hope its in black or atleast a black shell is availbe.
I really really wished they atleast added a 2.5mm audio output... itd be nice to be able to charge it while listening to music...
Any guesses on a price if tmobile gets it? if its in the 200-300 range.. im all over that

That site indicates the S620 has IR. Pretty sure that's incorrect.
The fuzzy image of the Cedar reminds me of the Palm Centro. Except the Centro of course has a touch screen.
Glad to see a replacement, but I have personally outgrown WindowsMobile Standard. It's almost time for me to move on to a touchscreen or a Blackberry.

HTC just release photos of their 09 phone lineup, dates haven't been said or who's carrying which phone. I just hope for tmobile to pick up the dash2, it would be dumb of them not to ,considering there the ones that carry the dash.

Probably the Touch Pro 2. I think it's time I moved on from smartphones.
either the dash 2 or the curve 8900
gave it up for a touch pro....gave that up for a g1...
honestly, i would have given it up for a 1st gen nokia from 1990. the battery issue and what not just got old..i was sick of having a phone that would randomly work, or eat batteries etc...
lol i remember playing snake for hours on that beast!
I think I´ll never give up to my Exaclibur, it will be here!
But I would love to buy the upcoming HTC Rhodium or the Topuch pro II !!
if the dash2 comes to t-mo, with 3g. otherwise, the g2 if it's nice looking/easy exchange support
Given up for Tilt, still use the Dash as second phone but doesn't do much anymore..........
It would have to be the Dash 2, otherwise I don't really see any phones that catch my interest right now. I've been pretty happy with my dash.
Maple
Yeah - I still prefer the keypad over the full touchscreen, and the sliders are too bulky, so if the Maple is on TMo 3G and has a MUCH better camera than the Dash then I will get it. I mean really - is it too much to ask to have at least 3 megapixels with decent pic quality on your phone? Sony knows how to do it!
I also hate that there are no HSPDA 3G phones that work for both AT&T and TMo 3G data. What's the point of having unlocked phones if you can't do 3G on both networks?
For me the phone has to have great voice quality (Dash does) and let me type lots of large emails and notes quickly (Dash does). I really want it to sync with my mail server and browse Internet sites quickly (Dash doesn't) and take decent pics (Dash seriously doesn't). Being able to switch from AT&T 3G to TMo 3G would be really perfect.
I second this also i hope it has a scroll wheel or something like that.. and proper volume control otherwise im happy wit my excaliber
I got to say I'm pretty happy with my dash for now. So I figure by the time the dash 2 comes out, price drops a little ( under 400 bucks ) The masters of XDA come out with some sick tweaks and roms, then I'll get mine.
HTC Magic!

HTC Snap

Looks like the much needed update to the Excalibur, and it's actually going to be picked up by a carrier (most likely AT&T due to the 3G spectrum). It boasts a lot of improved features, it almost seems impossible to fit all of that into a phone that size.
http://i.gizmodo.com/5192944/htc-snap-looks-like-beautiful-black-berry-bold
I personally like it, it retains the beauty of the original phone that just wasn't captured with the Cavalier (read: the Cavalier is ugly).
And WinMo 6.1 to boot!
Wasnt this branded as the HTC Maple? I saw this on BGR's website too. Looks nice, but only a 2MP camera.

Yes, yes, this is old news, we have been talking about this phone for a while, it was called the HTC Maple, and I'm not surprised at them for changing the name. That doesn't mean it won't be called the Maple anymore, like the excalibur , dash , s620 , whatever they want to call it, depending on the carrier, will be the name it will have. But still old news. Just cause it has 3g doesn't mean ATT will be the only one to pick it up, everyone else is already running 3g(unless you're with a company that doesn't) TMO already with 3g and so is Sprint and Verizon.

Here are some more pics: http://mobilitysite.com/2009/04/hands-on-with-the-htc-snap/
Looks great, and can't wait to get my hands on it. I can see some potential problems brewing.... I manually lock my phone (hold the end call button), and looks like I wil be turning my phone off out of habit for awhile with the Snap.

Just cause it has 3g doesn't mean ATT will be the only one to pick it up, everyone else is already running 3g(unless you're with a company that doesn't) TMO already with 3g and so is Sprint and Verizon.

dis phone is sexy
im freakin pumped man i want one of thses so bad
how much will it cost?
Perhaps it's just me, but is this phone anything more than a Dash with 6.1, 3G and a roller? I read somewhere that HTC plans to offer this phone unlocked and retail. I'm guessing that within a couple months of release, this will fall under the "free phone with contract" category.
I see no reason to get locked into a contact for this phone. My current contract is up in a few days (which means I've had my Dash for 2 years!). I'm going to wait for WM7 or until my Dash goes tits up, as the Dash (with Ricky and Stylez Rose 6.1) serves my current needs just fine. Don't get me wrong, looks great, but not really worthy of "OMG I GOTTA GET THAT ASAP!".
I sort of agree.
The more I see it the more I dislike it, I think it looks too much like a blackberry for my taste, and that phone should only be coming out with wm 6.5, not 6.1. Is not really that much of an upgrade if it will have the same stuff that I have on my dash right now. Anyways the way I see it I'm pointing on a different direction, for me it will be either a HTC Tilt(Kaiser) or a HTC touch pro (Fuze) next.

roloracer,
I was waiting for people to see this as peeps are now, it's an SPV c550 that's bit hit by a steam roler and had a little joysticky thing or whatever you want to call it.
I watched the vidoe that was posted and ended up looking @ the sea and the sky, did see a bit about a phone, but guess what bit i remember now? You got it the sky & the sand sea

That's funny that you say that If you look at an SPV c550 and imagine it being flatten up by a steam roler it would look like the maple , When I saw the video myself, found my eyes wondering around the room uncontrollably.
OP should make this a poll,
1. I want one
2. I stand patriotic
3. I think it looks like an spv c550 hit by a steam roller
All bases covered
