HTC Snap - HTC Excalibur

Looks like the much needed update to the Excalibur, and it's actually going to be picked up by a carrier (most likely AT&T due to the 3G spectrum). It boasts a lot of improved features, it almost seems impossible to fit all of that into a phone that size.
http://i.gizmodo.com/5192944/htc-snap-looks-like-beautiful-black-berry-bold
I personally like it, it retains the beauty of the original phone that just wasn't captured with the Cavalier (read: the Cavalier is ugly).
And WinMo 6.1 to boot!

Wasnt this branded as the HTC Maple? I saw this on BGR's website too. Looks nice, but only a 2MP camera.

Yes, yes, this is old news, we have been talking about this phone for a while, it was called the HTC Maple, and I'm not surprised at them for changing the name. That doesn't mean it won't be called the Maple anymore, like the excalibur , dash , s620 , whatever they want to call it, depending on the carrier, will be the name it will have. But still old news. Just cause it has 3g doesn't mean ATT will be the only one to pick it up, everyone else is already running 3g(unless you're with a company that doesn't) TMO already with 3g and so is Sprint and Verizon.

It still a nice phone and a 2mp camera is not so bad.

Here are some more pics: http://mobilitysite.com/2009/04/hands-on-with-the-htc-snap/
Looks great, and can't wait to get my hands on it. I can see some potential problems brewing.... I manually lock my phone (hold the end call button), and looks like I wil be turning my phone off out of habit for awhile with the Snap.

dis phone is sexy

im freakin pumped man i want one of thses so bad

how much will it cost?

Perhaps it's just me, but is this phone anything more than a Dash with 6.1, 3G and a roller? I read somewhere that HTC plans to offer this phone unlocked and retail. I'm guessing that within a couple months of release, this will fall under the "free phone with contract" category.
I see no reason to get locked into a contact for this phone. My current contract is up in a few days (which means I've had my Dash for 2 years!). I'm going to wait for WM7 or until my Dash goes tits up, as the Dash (with Ricky and Stylez Rose 6.1) serves my current needs just fine. Don't get me wrong, looks great, but not really worthy of "OMG I GOTTA GET THAT ASAP!".

I sort of agree.

The more I see it the more I dislike it, I think it looks too much like a blackberry for my taste, and that phone should only be coming out with wm 6.5, not 6.1. Is not really that much of an upgrade if it will have the same stuff that I have on my dash right now. Anyways the way I see it I'm pointing on a different direction, for me it will be either a HTC Tilt(Kaiser) or a HTC touch pro (Fuze) next.

roloracer,
I was waiting for people to see this as peeps are now, it's an SPV c550 that's bit hit by a steam roler and had a little joysticky thing or whatever you want to call it.
I watched the vidoe that was posted and ended up looking @ the sea and the sky, did see a bit about a phone, but guess what bit i remember now? You got it the sky & the sand sea

That's funny that you say that If you look at an SPV c550 and imagine it being flatten up by a steam roler it would look like the maple , When I saw the video myself, found my eyes wondering around the room uncontrollably.

OP should make this a poll,
1. I want one
2. I stand patriotic
3. I think it looks like an spv c550 hit by a steam roller

The Rumored T-mobile Dash 2

How many of you hope that when/if T-mobile brands this phone it isn't the Cavalier but some entirely new phone?
hopfully not for awhile cuz i just got the dash 3 months ago.
I wouldn't mind the S630 at all.
Where did you hear this... rumour ?
I don't think it will be a Cav, unless the Cav has about double the battery life and is 3G ready. Trying to predict the future from reading Gizmodo/etc. and biweekly Tmobile chattings, I think it doesn't cut the mark for what Tmo US has planned.
However, if they did push it, it would probably get the Cav in widespread circulation enough to get it some decent development, which it currently lacks. Until it is popped wide open, I'm not interested.
So I think the Cav is not the Dash 2. And I think the Shadow 2 will be around looong before a Dash 2. My two cents, now 100% off, one night only.

I dont know what kind of "development" you're expecting for the Cavalier. I mean... it's a standard smartphone... it's a Dash on steroids. What makes it so special that the current applications developed for landscape smartphones, wouldn't work on it ?
T-Mobile in the US needs to step their game up. Our phones out here suck. When I first got my Dash about a year ago I was one of the only people I knew who had it. Now I see it everywhere because they haven't released anything good. Nothing new. Who wants a Smurf looking phone or a the Shadow (looks cheap)? If there is a new smartphone or PDA from HTC I can't wait to see it for T-Mobile. Does anybody know a loophole I can slip through to get my hands on a T-Mobile UK phone without paying $600?

I don't see why people have such a problem with the Cavalier! It's an awesome phone. We all love our Excaliburs...and from what I understand, the Cavalier is nothing but a "next-gen" Excalibur. That's a good thing...right? If the Dash 2 is the Cavalier or isn't the Cavalier--either way I'm anticipating it's release.

I'm not hating on the Cavalier. I've only heard that all the new smartphones Tmobile US is interested in have to have a much longer talk time on WiFi than, for example, the Dash. Since the Cavalier is similarly sized, I suspect it is similar in battery life. And I am not aware of it being 3G, which they have said all the new high-end phones will be.

Well the cavalier ( at least the ones sold in the UK and japan ) have 3g , dont know if its UTMS or HSDPA. but the only complain people have is the battery life on the device. Since it includes a more robust 400mhz proc (made by samsung i think?) and includes 3g It is naturally have a shorter battery life. (unless they have found another battery with more "juice" to offset the extra power and bandwidth)

The Cavalier is buggy and not worthy to succeed the Dash.
http://pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=reviews&id=977
They should have at least kept the rounded corners.
Cavalier is not significantly better
I bought Cavalier a few months ago to be used on T-Mobile network. I ended up selling it and keeping the Dash. Here is my impression:
- The phone did not feel fast despite the processor, because the O/S was not optimized for it.
- Battery drained in 1 day or less depending on usage.
- T-Mo does not have 3G, so internet was about the same.
I am honestly getting tired of the JOGGR. Makes me want to get another phone. However, I like the HTC's and I do not want a touchscreen device.
Thanks guys, for all the insights and opinions on the Cavalier. I honestly thought it would be just as good (if not, better) than its predecessor... I've been playing around with the thought of getting an unlocked Cav from Best Buy's website, but after reading all these posts--I'm not so sure...

[]I need your valued opinion on a phone recommendation for my brother.

I'll do this like a patient case workup:
Patient: My brother
Occupation: Medical Student
Previous Phone: Blackberry Curve 8300 with Data Plan (it was a refurb that died)
Age: 25
Data Usage: on a scale from 1-10, maybe a 3-4 emailing a little bit and some google searches
Network: ATT
Computer: iBook
Location: Philadelphia
Type of Phone Experience: a complete Monkey, my Jack Russell Terrier probably knows more about phones than my brother, lol but once he learns the basics he's alright
Requirements:
0. OS: whichever one can manage all the steps below easy, maybe RIM, S60, WM, iPhone, willing to pay up to $300-$400
1. Long battery life at least 10-12hrs
2. Qwerty keyboard
3. Email - a university email and a gmail account
4. SMS/MMS
5. MicroSd memory for pics and video
6. GPS or A-GPS with pedestrian view
7. Maybe Exchange support, his last sim card got corrupted and you know what happened
Icing on the cake
1. Facebook
2. MySpace
so what do you guys think, I'm thinking maybe a Nokia, maybe a Blackjack II, but I'd like to have your opinion, you guys are the best and one of most knowledgeable groups I know
Thanks in advance for chiming in.
maybe
have you looked into the G1 or the new touch screen blackberry? those both look pretty promising. the dash/excalibur is a good phone too. the iPhone doesnt' have micro sd support if i'm not mistaken but it would probably be most compatible with his computer.
Not wanting to sound like a pariah in this windowsmobile forum, I would suggest a Nokia E71, about to be launched in ATT. Simple and does all these needs, good camera, 3.2 MP, and decent sound.
I myself am a windowsmobile person, on ATT, with BJ2 6.1 ATT ROM, but I guess WM world might be a but too much with the tweaks needed, for ur monkey.
Plus skyscape now has come up with good support, so u can crack and have all those for him in there.
BTW fella, u a dr or med student by any chance, just curious, Am myself one, hence asking

I suggest the Blackberry Bold. He is already familiar with the OS and the Bold is a sweet piece of tech.

Yeah, I know what you mean, I was a staff writer for BerryReview.com and also own www.blackberrygtd.com but I have not posted in a while, ever since I made the switch to the so called "darkside" Windows Mobile lol, WM rocks though and it gets a lot of negative rap but the blackberry is a pretty tight platform in its own right.

Yea it is a tight platform; however, I think that WM can do a lot more than the blackberry can.
I really think the Bold will be a good fit for him. From what you described, he doesnt seem to be the type to obsess over customization. That negates one of the main "advantages" of a WinMo phone over the Bold.
He will have a rock solid OS, a fast processor, gorgeous hi-res screen, good battery life, 3G and Wi-Fi and the Bold is more multimedia oriented than previous Blackberrys.

New Excalibur in black ?!

I read this article on BGR today about a "color refresh" TMobile put out recently. Does anybody have one of the black Dash's ?!
http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2008/12/22/t-mobile-dash-in-black-floating-around/
i've seen this story posted on engadget & pocketnow. interesting. i hope it's true & has 3g support ;-)
Well if you read the comments, people say it's JUST a color update and nothing more. It's still cool and I wouldn't mind owning one
Its just a color refresh. Nothing new except different color and slightly different color keyboard color. My local T-Mo has them, frankly they look like crap I was very disappointed.
Looks like my excalibur in a black silicone case
Seems to me the owners are going to be dealing with a lot more of this:

I've had a chance to manhandle the fake demo phone we got at my T-mo store, and it's a pretty alright cosmetic change. I don't like my companies logo on my Dash, and have been contemplating scrubbing it off; but with the new Dash it doesn't work because of the rubber face, and that pink T REALLY sticks out on the black.
From what I've been told, and what we're expecting, it's going to be windows mobile 6.1. We should have the real phones unboxed soon (my manager won't let us TOUCH them until the original phones are gone ((one left!!)) so we can't see it).
SO if it is, we all should have an official windows mobile 6.1 rom from T-mobile soon, and hopefully it'll clean things up.
I would love for someone to debrand it after they dump it though. Just a thought.

It looks like it is confirmed Windows Mobile 6.1:
http://thetechnicist.typepad.com/the_technicist/2008/12/tmobile-dash-black-hands-on.html
(as reported today by Engadget and The Technicist).
The biggest question now is if it comes with the sliding panel homepage. The screen shot printed on the fake phone, and these screens, still show the Windows Mobile Default Homescreen.
The other big thing I'm hoping you awesome modders can do is rip the UMA drivers out of the upcoming UMA Shadow II. If we can get an official Tmo 6.1 with hotspot calling I'd declare it a Happy New Year next month.
thetechnicist is claiming that the Dash is outdated, but we don't have 3g in my area yet, so the little bugger is still a piece of gold IMOP, especially over crackberrys as long as I get that UMA.
Hrm
So if this updated Dash has WinMo 6.1 would there be away to get a somewhat official rom to put on our original Dash(s)?
My fiance actually has one. It by default does not have the sliding panel home page. When she get's home I'll see if it's available on there at all. Looking at the frequencies on the box, 850, 900, 1800, 1900, I don't think it's 3G (1700 is what tmo is using?). From what I can tell it truely is unchanged hardware wise.
I didn't think it was 6.1 at all since it didn't have the instant messanger styled text messaging interface, or is that a different app baked into the 6.1 firmware I put on my Shadow? Anything else anyone wants me to look at? Any certainty if flashing it with any of the 6.1 firmwares will work?
Edit:
Phone is home, it is not 6.1.
What version of 6.0 is it running?

cool and unique things you've done with dash

tell of a special thing/concept (i.e. not incredibly common, or done by 4yr olds) you've done or discovered with your dash. explain in brief but diplomatic terms (not like a 4yrold) I go first
I like wififofum as a network scanner (just introduced to it recently). you can analyze and even map with a triangulation the source of a wifi signal. how's that for useful. dash is a tiny unassuming ppc, but it rules
I put together a ROM from scratch for it... lol
I discovered that in vibrate mode that the dash feels kinda funny in my pocket when someone calls!
I use mine as a portable heater, OC it to 400Mhz and it keeps me warm on theses cold dayz.
Currently my dash does multiple things, its a game machine, a paperweight and a dial up machine all in one!!!

It's finally here (march '09). Excalibur replacement

Since we saw a couple of weeks ago htc's '09 roadmap, I've been waiting to find more info on the HTC S511 'Cedar', and it looks they are finally here.
PDAdb.net just added the (incomplete) specs for the device.
Can't wait for it to be released, and I'm hoping that some local carrier gets it ASAP.

There's no info yet on the battery or weight, whatsoever, but if the stock battery doesn't get me throught the day I won't mind changing for a high capacity one as long as its form factor is similar to the dash one.
Looks good, i hope its in black or atleast a black shell is availbe.
I really really wished they atleast added a 2.5mm audio output... itd be nice to be able to charge it while listening to music...
Any guesses on a price if tmobile gets it? if its in the 200-300 range.. im all over that

it's there
so cool.. so nice. great improvments. UMTS1900
ah, cool. must've missed it. if it has 3g & comes to t-mobile by the end of this year, i'll probably get it. i bought an ipod touch recently & love it but realized i could not use a touch keyboard like that for emailing/messaging. it's so annoying.

It has HSDPA faster than 3G
looks really nice!!
That site indicates the S620 has IR. Pretty sure that's incorrect.
The fuzzy image of the Cedar reminds me of the Palm Centro. Except the Centro of course has a touch screen.
Glad to see a replacement, but I have personally outgrown WindowsMobile Standard. It's almost time for me to move on to a touchscreen or a Blackberry.
damn I swapped my Dash for a G1....when this comes out I may have to cop it straight up just to have it.
dash 2
News floating on the net says different , HTC S511 Cedar isn't the new dash. The new HTC Maple/3G Excalibur is said to be the successor of the dash/excalibur.

My fault... Seeing the specs it looked like the straight replacement for the dash, but I should have noticed it's a S5xx series, and I suppose dash replacement will be S6xx, or something of the sorts.
Anyway, specs-wise looks good.

Just wondering why you're talking about the mda mail on the dash replacement thread.
