I installed Garmin XT on my MDA Vario II with success but need a GPS reciever for it. What reciever do I need or will any Bluetooh GPS reciever work?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Pretty much any should work.
-bZj
You should aim for something with at least a SiRFStar III chipset though any should work reasonably well.
I know I will probably get blasted for this but, I find the more channels you have the better the performance.
Using a 16 channel receiver it took up to 10 minutes to get a good lock and you could forget it if you were in a built up city area or it was overcast. I now use a 54 channel receiver. Lock in under a minute and much more reliable in built up areas.
Cheers...
why would you get blasted for it, when its true, i had the same with my voda 1605, it works better and faster with a higher sat ratio, mine you it does only need it htink 8 to actually work.
Posted before that the more channels the better it worked and was told in no uncertain terms by a few people that there are only 24 satellites and so you don't need more than that as it won't pick them up...
Found using the GPS receiver that it was faster the more channels used. And more accurate too. I used to get lag on screen using Tomtom 7 with directions being told a few seconds AFTER I needed to turn corners, etc... Was a major hassle and when I was told I was in the middle of Sydney harbour I wasn't impressed, though the GPS did say to turn right..?!
The more channels the better the signal lock and more accurate the directions though there may still be areas that you won't receive info, I tend to find that the internal GPS receivers are still better than bluetooth, but any port in a storm, and I'm too broke to buy a GPS for myself.
Cheers...

Hey Guys,
I'm not sure if you guys covered this (I looked all over the board and found nothin') but I was clued into what I consider a pretty big minus on my new EVO.
I have the Motorola HT820 bluetooth headphones. I know they're kind of old but they work pretty great and they have damn good battery life. I've had them for a while and I used to use them flawlessly with my iPhone 3Gs.
For the first time, I decided to take my Evo for a gym run. I was able to pair it correctly and it even detected that it does both A2DP stereo and regular hands free calling. Problem is, the music would constantly skip and stop/start. Didn't realize this till I was in the gym where I REALLY needed it.
This morning, something told me to try it again but this time disable the Wifi. No skips, no breaks in the sound at ALL?!
WTF?
Is this common knowledge that I just stumbled across or have I uncovered something here? I know A2DP may not be the main focus of alot of users but I love it and the HT820s are perfect fit for active gym session.
Had anyone else experienced this weird stuff with the WiFi?
The only other issue I can think of related to WiFi is not being able to get Ymail (not yahoo mail) through WiFi. Works great on 3G.... Weird huh?
So what about it guys?
Kc

Is anyone concerned on whether or not the phone will have issues locking on to your location? I currently have a samsung droid charge and the thing takes minutes to lock (talking 10 to 15 minutes at times). I'm aware samsung has had faulty gps with the first galaxy series as well, but haven't checked on their latest phones recently. Anyone know if the nexus s had any gps problems? Just hoping this phone won't suffer from the same problems as those other phones.
The built in barometer sensor will probably help.
Here's an article published by PocketNow:
Google Confirms Barometer Intent: Faster GPS Locks
According to Morgill, the intended use for the barometer sensor will be speeding-up GPS acquisition. We had mentioned the ability to gauge altitude via barometric pressure, but focused on its use in estimating altitude independently of GPS, saving battery life. Instead, Morgill says, it's to make initial GPS calculations go faster.
While it's easy to keep-up with GPS satellites, an initial lock-on can take a smartphone's GPS receiver a little while to make. Besides needing to wait to receive satellite constellation data from the GPS birds, the receiver needs to solve a complicated set of equations to figure out your location. One of those values it's solving for is your altitude coordinate, and if you already have a pretty good guess what it's near, you can speed up the rest of the equation-solving. Of course, you always could use the sensor for any of the uses we mentioned, given the proper app support, but this GPS-assist looks to be the primary motivation for the sensor's inclusion.

Even better would be to know that it uses the Russian Glonnas system as well as the US GPS sats to give double the number of possible sats to lock to. The Samsung Note uses Glonass and the Apple 4s uses both. Let's hope the Galaxy Nexus does the same.
I am hoping that after more than a year and over thousands of complaints Samsung got their act together and got that damn GPS working like HTC's devices.
The gps lock seems pretty quick judging from this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-yWgzoJXMA#t=9m41s
Nexus s zero GPS issues full stop!
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
The Galaxy S debacle gave Samsung a black eye they won't soon forget. Whatever the issue was though, it was solved when I got my NS about a week after launch. It locks usually in less than 5 seconds and has only lost signal a few times and has never failed to function for the nearly one year that I've been using it.
Yeah this was the only thing stopping me from pre-ordering the galaxy Nexus.
My Galaxy S Vibrant (T-Mobile) has a though usable GPS, it's complete garbage.
I remember driving down I-5 on my way down to Portland... it kept jumping in between local roads and the actual I-5.....
So I take it that GPS is fairly fast to lock and accurate? (keep in mind I don't use A-GPS since I have very limited Data)
very quick GPS lock and accurate from my attempts so far
Just stood outside in an alleyway between houses and got a lock in under 10 seconds !
Yeah mine has got pretty good GPS performance, although coming from a Galaxy S anything is better.

It literally locks in 10 seconds while outdoor and 20 while indoor. Really works well

Has there been any confirmation that galaxy nexus can use GLONASS satellites?
I've had no problems with gps so far.
sent from a galaxy far far away.
tested it right after the buy. i am a geocacher the fix was instant. Much faster than my Desire HD
Droid Charge (my dad and sister has one) can take several minutes or longer. My Motorola Triumph could take 5 minutes out in open area (pathetic)
Nexus, locked within 5s from within a bathroom first time ever using it, down to 10M accuracy.
Needless to say, I am very unhappy that it wasn't instant but I suppose I can live with 5s
Off Topic, I read that the galaxy note uses 3 different GPS systems, US/Russia and something else, so it's able to see about double the sats in the sky - anyone know if nexus is the same way?
Which do you think is the best, and why?
Also can you mention the price of it too, please
Navigon.
Don't know the price - bought it YEARS ago ...
I would say sygic cause after u have download the map. It just uses the satelit to track ur phone rather than 3g. This saves u some bucks.

Does it have lots of POIs?
Waze... Free turn by turn Nav with user updated traffic.. Real time road conditions.
I just read that Sygic uses TomTom maps, which is good
Enjoy with sygic then.
It’s very hard to tell which Gps app is the best for new Samsung GT-I9300 Galaxy S III.
I’ve installed those Gps apps: Navikey 7 ways, Sygic Aura, Route 66(Maps + Navigation)
All those working well(full screen) for Galaxy’s resolution 1280x720.
Navikey 7 ways - I the very new app from our Russian friends, don’t have many option yet, app & maps for it, is completely free.
Sygic Aura - much better than 7 ways, but I personally didn’t like it for some reasons. Try it, possibly you’ll like.
There are many forums where you can download it for free, already cracked.
Route 66(Maps + Navigation) – best app for now. I sure that many of WM users know it very well. It is free for 30 days only. Find the price for it on their web site. Hope you know what the Google is…
I’m new android user, and my best Gps app form WM is the IGO, but unfortunately do not exist yet for our 1280x720 resolution. When it comes, I’ll change to that one. For me is the best Gps program.
Try Waze! Im telling you its great.

Should be in the poll. It looks like a "micky mouse" app, but it is really powerful.
Also love how quickly the S3 gets a GPS lock. Makes navigation super accurate (and fast to start). No waiting for GPS...

I think Copilot is the best..
I have downloaded the maps to the phone so I don't need data.. just GPS.. but it drains the battery pretty fast I think.. I get about 2 to 2 in a half hours out of a 3500mAh battery.. and that's while its on the car charger.. maybe that's normal. I don't know..
Osmand. I was using it on my s2 and now the s3. You can download maps for free and they are updated monthly. Try it, its free.

I've bought Sygic since my Nokia 5800 Xpress music and I really liked it back then. However the latest years Sygic isn't updating the maps that often. Last maps update is 2010 as far as I remember.
I tried using Sygic some weeks ago just to see if the 3 years old roads were updated. Well... They weren't. There are some new roads in the town I live in and I drove over them just to see that Sygic was displaying them as farming fields without names or something. This is really disappointing.
If the maps get updated then I think Sygic is the best since it has many POIs and real places photos and it doesn't require internet as Google Maps does.
For the moment and since Sweden is having a great HSDPA network coverage in combination with my 10 GB data plan I will be using Google Maps. (Google Navigation does support voice guidance in swedish!)
I used to do a lot of driving with work. Tried almost all of them - always keep coming back to Co-Pilot live Premium.
Very powerful, very stable. Reasonable pricing, including things like free live traffic for 12 months.
Please be mindful that the poll will show what people are using (typically someone will use just one app that they have paid for and wont have experience with others, and many will be using free solutions like G Maps), not what is the better app.
I have previously fully tested the android versions of Igo, Sygic, Navigon, Copilot, Ndrive as well as most of the free navigation apps on my last device.
They all have different features that will appeal to individual preferences.
IGO has always been by far the best GPS software but is not available for purchase on android. The resolution for this device is not supported yet but it's only a matter of time before someone produces a skin that supports it. It is highly customizable and appeals to the more technically minded who are prepared to get into its guts and mess around. That being said the android version is unfortunately a battery hog and I would not recommend it to the casual GPS user for that reason.
The worst is Navigon which although it has a nice interface and almost perfect TTS suffers from atrocious routing (it will get you where you want to go but invariably by the worst route possible)
The rest fall somewhere inbetween with Sygic being the closest contender to Igo in terms of routing, flexibility and 3d map display. As a previous poster has mentioned though, you take your chances with map updates.
Google maps navigation has come on in leaps and bounds over the last year and is now a close contender. The advantages are that it's free and totally integrated with the OS. Routing could be improved but it's search function is unbeatable, particularly the ability to voice search. It looks pretty certain that Google are about to release a major upgrade in the near future which should include full offline use and lots of other goodies.
Finally, we are lucky to own a device which in my opinion is about as state of the art as non military GPS technology gets.

due to the nature of my job i drive around a lot, i started with sigic aura, it works well but i could never get it to use the fatest route (it would always go for the shortest route) , it would use A/B roads over two junctions further on the motoway to back track a mile.
so i got copilot live when it was released and it works.
I notice there are a few versions of copilot live. Standard and premium.
Maybe I'll look into that one a bit more
My vote goes to Waze.
Freakin Awesome in Singapore.
I couldn't get the Google Navigation to speak in turn-by-turn.
Anyone has any idea if anything needs to be enabled? TIA
Hello everyone!
I'm very interested in this tablet and instead of buying a stand alone GPS navigator I decided to buy a good tablet that would do a lot more bunch of stuff.
Did any of you try the capabilities of the Tab PRO 10.1" as a GPS navigator? Is the fix slow of fast? I use Sygic, did any of you had/have the chance to try it on this tablet?
Hope someone will help me
I use the 8.4" and a HTC One (m7).
I don't think the 8.4" GPS or WiFi "chips" are as good as the HTC One's.
GPS is slower to pick up a signal and the WiFi works over a much shorter range.
When testing the 8.4 inside, I can wait forever to get a GPS signal, the phone's GPS pick up is just a few seconds.
I've not used the tablet for actually navigate (due to dashboard placement), but, I've tested Sygic in "demo" mode and it works fine.
To sum up, I think the tablet should pick up a GPS signal, by the time you've got into and setup your tablet holder/cables in your car.

Working on sm t525 sygic 13.2no lags
Thank you guys! I use now a Galaxy S2 and I find it very hard to navigate: it's slow, laggy and the GPS chip is not fast at all. In a cloudy day I basically can't pick up more than 3 satellites.
I think I'll go with the 10.1" Pro, but only after the 12th of June (when the Tab S line show up) so to know if I'm more interested in one or the other.
In the meantime, please feel free to add any comments or suggestions.
Thank you again!
Can anyone test the GPS accuracy using GPStest apk the only dual GPS app compatible for now. We want to know if it's 10x more accurate then other phone or only bull **** like xiaomi mi 8
Bumping this question up... I'm really looking forward to hearing how accurate the Huawei implementation of "dual frequency" GPS is.
For many people in the US...the extra accuracy is NOT a problem...... However, in downtown Tokyo or Manila....after you've walked around the block 3 times while following G Map's "bouncing blue GPS dot" in 35 degree heat / 99% humidity...accurate GPS *is* a big deal. To recap - the dual frequency should minimize reflections of the GPS signal and in theory lead to 30 cm accuracy.
NOTE- only a few cities worldwide are served by dual frequency satellites at this time. Where you do the GPS accuracy checks will matter. For more info on the precision of dual frequency GPS...see this cute demo. Can't vouch for its accuracy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mI0TdX7HCwU
I'll try in a little but I can tell you it locked near instantly in my garage where I can't even get xm radio..
Edit:
See a ton of EU, US, and Russian Sats and a few chinese
What exactly am I looking for to tell you?
Thank you for your reply! If your location is served by the dual frequency satellites..... when you enlarge/embiggen/zoom in with G Maps....your phone SHOULD be able to tell you when you've moved from one parking space to the one RIGHT NEXT to the first one. In other words...in theory, there is 30 cm (12 inch) accuracy for your position....NOT the current 3 to 24 foot "radius" of error that current consumer smartphone GPS provides. For USA drivers this will be a big help because it will give you "lane level" accuracy. This is doubly important b/c in large cities with skyscrapers and multi level expressways, there are tremendous problems with reflected/bounced signals and the infamous BLUE DOT may or may not be anywhere near where it says you are...
Downside is that accuracy can be so good...if nefarious actors want you....they can land a drone on your head.. instead of just "nearby" you.

I went outside and the radius around the dot in maps became very small. Walked to one side of my driveway to the other and the dot matched me near perfectly.
Your results are encouraging. Thank you for checking. Hope we can get more input/feedback from other users to find out if this "dual frequency GPS" feature is as valuable as it is purported to be.
Better but not cm accuracy
I have compared my mate 20 pro to Samsung s6 and yes the dual GPS improves remarkably. Using two different GPS. Testing apps I had 3-4m accuracy with mate 20 pro versus 4-9m with s6. It picked up a few more satellites but more. Importantly it was very fast to get a lock. No waiting 2 minutes. A lock was within 2 seconds.
Still I've not been. Able to see any sub metre accuracy yet. I am in the southwest UK.
Maybe GPS Test app will help? ^^
I did using Mi 8 and OP5 for a short period of time, the Mi 8 got 4mts-12mts sometimes, the OP5 got 16-40mts sometimes, the differency is big, didn't got my Mate 20X yet, but soon i'1ll have it

Thanks to all for getting this info out there. KInd of disappointed that once again, the accuracy & precision is much less than what was advertised. Nice to have the speedy lock but would be much nicer to have the speedy lock, accuracy and precision..
Huawei also <ahem> stretched the truth about the Mate 9 being able to use Galileo GPS for accuracy. Everyone using a Mate 9 could not report good news on getting/using Galileo sats or any better accuracy that any other no name phone.

Switching from Mate 10 Pro, I found that my Mate 20x GPS is less sensitive. Indoors, Mate 10 Pro picked up GPS faster, while mate 20x took longer for a fix and lost location more often. Little disappointing, but it is what it is.
Outdoor, Mate 20x gets more sattelite locks though.

Very bad gps location when using Huawei built-in camera, even in open space. 50-150 away from actual location.
Accurate GPS location when using other apps, such as GPS Status, UltraGPS.
