I just upgraded to this Diamond 2D ROM for my Sprint Touch:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=425267
... and everything works like it did before EXCEPT the Internet appears to connect differently. I'm talking about the phone itself, I'm not tethering or anything. In the past, I was just connected to the EVDO or 1X network whenever the phone was on, I never saw any sort of prompt. Now, after the custom ROM, when I open PIE, check weather, or do anything involving the Internet, the phone pops up with a message saying it is dialing #777 and in the connectivity window it says "Sprint PCS (Dial-up)" and shows a running connectivity timer.
In all the time I have owned this phone, I've never seen this. Did I set up my Vision services properly?

I just flashed new Froyo build from here (0726) http://sourceforge.net/projects/androidhtc/files/
And I noticed there is no EDGE data connection, only GPRS. If we can switch it to EDGE type, the data rate can be better!
Can somebody help?
Since the kaiser hardware supports EDGE it should be able to use it, just not sure if any android builds have EDGE support, of course I have been known to be wrong
You could have a careful mess about in the testing screen, ( open dialer, press *#*#4636#*#*, do not press dial), in phone information have a look at preferred network type, play with that, but take a note of the original settings before you do anything.
Be very careful, I spent all day without the ability to send sms, had to wait until i got home to get the correct settings before everything was normal again.
I have been using Edge to save my battery on my Tilt in both WM6.5 and Android 2.1g... Recently, I have bought several new batteries and none of them seem to hold a charge like the ones I bought last year. So that's crap...
Anyhow, to enable Edge in Android... I found the only way I could do it was to install WMLongLife in Windows Mobile. From there, I set all my connections to be 2G (only).
That saves battery in WM6.5.
In order to get Android to use Edge, you must have an Edge signal in Windows Mobile, as well as an Edge Data Connection started. So, start IE, sync your mail, refresh your weather...
Then start Haret and boot Android. If you have replaced WM with Android, I don't know how that works...
If you haven't started a data connection before booting, you will not attach to the network.
I found enabling "Slower Networks" in Android's Network Settings does nothing.
Battery life is better, but I still wish the new batteries had better capacity.

I just played that phone information. Network type: unkown! And, I could not set the preferred network type setting. But, everytime I turn it to a type like GSM only, it just turns back to unknow immediately!
Actually, when I flashed a earlier build of Froyo from that sourceforge site, EDGE worked for my phone.

Sorry, bad information, apparently the phone information screen does not work on kaiser, not sure what to try now....
Hi there,
Maybe I haven't searched in the right area's, but I certainly have had a look around and couldn't find anything to match my exact issue.
I've just purchased an HTC Desire from Telstra in Australia, but I'm based in New Zealand and so didn't want or need all of the built in Telstra stuff so I rooted the device and installed the HTC official Froyo build for the device.
All worked perfectly and the upgrade was successful and all I needed to do was to add 2 APN's, one for mobile data and one for MMS.
Now they connect up perfectly when I manually connect them, but if I open up Internet for example, I'd have expected it to automatically connect up to 3G data if no wireless is available but it doesn't it just says no connection.
The mobile data APN is set as the default and has a green selection next to it when I look at them.
Am I missing something ?? I'm an Android newbie so please excuse this if it's something obvious and I'm being dumb !
Geeeez I'd have expected someone to have been able to answer what I'm sure is such a simple feature / expectation.
All my previous windows mobile devices just hooked up with WIFI if available and 3G if not, I didn't have to manually connect. As soon as a program needed access to 3G it just hooked up and did what it needed.
One thing I was hoping for in Android was that it would hook up as the windows mobile did, but would switch itself off if it wasn't used for a while......... something Windows Mobile didn't do so it would go flat pretty quick if you had it checking the web on a regular basis as it would just leave the 3G connection running even though there was no data flowing.
Come on people.......... do other peoples Android devices hook up automatically when required ??? or am I just expecting too much ?

Yes it does. Other than turning mobile internet off and on, I'm not even certain how you would "manually connect"?
Regards,
Dave
canman your Desire ought to automatically grab the APN settings with a SIM card installed, when you power it up. Failing that, once you manually enter correct settings it should automatically use those. There is no "manual connection" I know of, just enter the APN settings, or verify they are correct, and you never have to do this again. Double-check that the settings are correct. Also, if you are using wifi turn that off until you are sure that your mobile data is working ok. If you have done everything correctly and you are getting error messages, the phone is defective and should be returned.
It seems random when the data connection works and the internet works on my phone. I'll sit there with full 3G signal and i get "cannot find the DNS Server" error when trying to load webpages :S
is this a problem with my Samsung Omnia 7, Windows Phone 7 or my network (Orange UK)?
I have this problem on my HD7 as well. If I have a 3G connection, it doesn't work. It only works on H (HSDPA).
Funnily enough, I had the same issue with my HD2 running WM6.5, which makes me wonder if WP7 is using the same comms drivers.
I have this problem too! A LOT everyday in diferent locations.
Actually how can I enable the HSDPA on my HD7? Because I can only get 3G.
These are just network errors.
I use internet alot and it happens on every device I had.
My WP7 is actually pretty stable in this regard.
Same! Never works on 3g only ever H you sure its just network errors cause it happens alot
YES this is a major problem for me with my Omnia 7, I even got a replacement phone from my carrier (Optus Australia) because of it... and it's exactly the same. It's extremely frustrating and makes the phone damn near unusable. Happens on every device? what a load of rubbish, if I put the SIM in my old iPhone 3GS it works FLAWLESSLY. I don't know what I'm going to do.

Yep, I have the same problem with my Omnia 7.
On all 3 of the networks i've used it on, T-Mobile, Virgin and GiffGaff.
Only solution is to reboot the phone.
I thing i've noticed, is it seems to happen when I move from an area where I have WiFi access (Home/Work/Cafe) to an area where i'm using a Phone network ?
I think we can only hope that the upcoming WP7 update fixes this. Also it seems enabling airplane mode then disabling it also fixes it in a similar way to rebooting the phone.

I'll make a note of that, cheers!
Im having the same issue with my HD7. Only EVER works on H. Not on G or 3G. It's driving me insane. The exact same sim on the same provider never had an issue on my Touch Pro 2, but this phone is shocking for internet
I get this occasionally on my HD7. Not really an issue right now. It does get annoying sometimes when the wifi in my house isnt strong enough to connect

You do realize that phones switch to H only while they are actively swapping data, then fall back to 3G while dormant, to save battery?
Try it - leave your phone alone for a bit and it will switch from H to 3G. Now access something on the net and it will switch to H (if possible) to get the data, then after a few seconds of inaction it will switch back to 3G.
So yes, it is correct that it only ever works on H!
Mind you, it would be nice if it worked on G too, I'm sure it should but mine never does.
hm i thought the " H " means that i dont get 3G signal.
but i think i had the same problem!
solution:
you only need to turn OFF WIFI
somehow its not using 3G when wifi networks are close,
even if you not connected to one.
turn OFF wifi or maybe only "discover new networks"
turning OFF wifi always brings me 3G back ...
Just to add my experience here...
I have a Samsung Omnia 7 and had never experienced any issues with 3G/H data/internet issues on the 3 network in the UK.
However, I've come over to Australia to visit the folks and have put in a Virgin SIM, now I really struggle with this. The connection just isn't working even with full 3G signal.
As pointed out, toggling my Airplane Mode works most of the time - I guess this is because the phone re-registers itself with the network when you enable>disable airplane mode (just like it would if you rebooted it). Curiously toggling the data connection option seems to have no effect.
Pain in the a*se.
I had connectivity issues with my Samsung Omnia 7. I worked out that my phone was not playing nice with my router and so my wifi connected but didn't actually work.
Also, I found that 3G performance was sub-par and many apps timed out because they were taking so long to get connection.
I solved these problems by flashing a new firmware. It was a little tricky and it is potentially risky, but a quick google will lead you to the relevant information.
I used a European firmware (I am in Australia on Optus), but it works fine. I just had to change all the language settings.
Now my phone's 3G and WiFi connections both work a lot faster (no more waiting for an eternity for the marketplace to open for example).
I have the same problem and read on create.msdn.com it has something to do with how wp7 handles the connections.
If the provider cuts off the connection frequently it loses its 3g signal or something like that. Thats why my push notifications are just unreliable. If I take my sim out and use wifi only. It just works and keeps working as soon as I connect to wifi. When 3g comes into play and the carrier cuts me off because im not actively using, the phone struggles to recconect for push etc.
I have tried to search but it doesn't like to include 4G (to short to be included) in the search box so forgive me if I wasn't bright enough to find this somewhere else.
My EVO will scan for 4G service. It then says connecting to Sprint, then flashes disconnected and scans again only to say connecting to sprint. Rinse and Repeat this process over and over. I have had this issue both on clean installs of fresh rom and currently on Koni's elite series rom. Anyone have this issue as well/and or know of a solution.
I do have a 4G MAC address so I would think that I should be able to connect.
Thanks in advance for the help

Well for one are you in a strong 4G coverage area?
Try shutting off your phone, pull the battery for a minute or two and restart your phone. (If you call Sprint and tell them this issue - this step will be the first one they tell you to execute)
Also you can try updating your profile and PRL, When I am having weak signals under 4G/3G - I update my profile & PRL and it always seems to fix the signal issue...
hope this helps

this happens to me when trying to connect to a 4g signal from my apartment. it will say "scanning... connecting... obtaining IP address/disconnected/scanning...connecting..." (sometimes the "obtaining ip address" does not appear) yet if i try to connect in other parts of town it connects fine. wimax sucks as far as connectivity, so until more towers appear and the signal is better there's probably no way to fix your issue. ive tried every inch of my house, and of course by the windows is slightly better. if you can manage to get a "poor" or "fair" 4g connection you'll probably end up with slower speeds than 3g anyway. it's really misleading because the software indicates the phone is trying to connect even though the signal isn't good enough to maintain a connection. clear and sprint coverage maps indicate my address and neighborhood as "best" 4g coverage too, so i have little hope of this ever improving. there is a thread for updating your ##data# values to get the phone to connect sooner and stay connected longer which i think probably helps, but not enough for me (nothing you do on your end can improve the tower signal) and even if it did, like i said you're connecting at "poor" or "fair" signal and your data speeds will often remain slower than 3g.

I am good coverage areas, my work where I am now can get it in buildings and comically my home is exactly on the line of in-home/on-street. Tried pulling the battery to same results, I think I have current PRL 60675 PRI 1.90_003. Not sure what you mean for the profile though.
Thanks for the tips.
I can connect to 4g with a poor/fair signal now, and heres how I did it if anyone cares:
flashed joeykrim's rooted stock sprint rom (5.1 I think)
updated prl through settings menu
updated profile through settings menu
use msl reader app from market to get msl code
go to dialer and type (NOT call) ##DATA#
enter MSL, go to edit mode, tap the first out of the 5 or so menu items
press menu, choose "restore" (phone will reboot or power off)
turn phone back on and enable 4g with phone on window ledge.
somewhere along the line (flashing many many different roms and wiping a lot, trying various kernels and tweaks) I had gotten stuck in the seemingly irreversible 4g/wimax connection/disconnection loop. Now I can at least connect!

Anyone have a ideal why this is happening? When I am on the Internet 3g sometimes 4g depending on where I am in my house. My Internet dies, I see the 3g icon sometimes the right arrow (up green) but not the left arrow (down orange) under the 3g when Internet dies. So I have to do sometimes is to open a new Window, Even to kick start my youtube app. I have the bookmark Google page. I have to open Google page in a new window to kick the Internet going again, then go back to the window I was trying to open that can't find to open, to get the Internet working again. This kinda started maybe two ago, oh note to add they started with my 4g couple weeks ago in my area, not full. So maybe something to with the towers? Any suggestions will help and thank you all developers for all time,
A little about my phone:
1. Not rooted
2. All My poxxy are all at 0.0.0 etc. -did it months ago, right 0 at the rights spots.
3. My back cover that iam using don't have anything nfc antenna on it, iam sure it dont matter.
4. uag case
5. Setting in settings is on mobile its on cdma/lte I did automatic nothing changed
Thanks again
if they're working on the towers, not uncommon to have network issues.
To get your internet back, just go into airphone mode, and then turn it off. The phone will reconnect.
If it's that bad and inconsistent, you may be able to complain and get Sprint to get you one of those AirWaves thing to let you use your internet to support your phone on the network.
