I just flashed new Froyo build from here (0726) http://sourceforge.net/projects/androidhtc/files/
And I noticed there is no EDGE data connection, only GPRS. If we can switch it to EDGE type, the data rate can be better!
Can somebody help?
Since the kaiser hardware supports EDGE it should be able to use it, just not sure if any android builds have EDGE support, of course I have been known to be wrong
You could have a careful mess about in the testing screen, ( open dialer, press *#*#4636#*#*, do not press dial), in phone information have a look at preferred network type, play with that, but take a note of the original settings before you do anything.
Be very careful, I spent all day without the ability to send sms, had to wait until i got home to get the correct settings before everything was normal again.
I have been using Edge to save my battery on my Tilt in both WM6.5 and Android 2.1g... Recently, I have bought several new batteries and none of them seem to hold a charge like the ones I bought last year. So that's crap...
Anyhow, to enable Edge in Android... I found the only way I could do it was to install WMLongLife in Windows Mobile. From there, I set all my connections to be 2G (only).
That saves battery in WM6.5.
In order to get Android to use Edge, you must have an Edge signal in Windows Mobile, as well as an Edge Data Connection started. So, start IE, sync your mail, refresh your weather...
Then start Haret and boot Android. If you have replaced WM with Android, I don't know how that works...
If you haven't started a data connection before booting, you will not attach to the network.
I found enabling "Slower Networks" in Android's Network Settings does nothing.
Battery life is better, but I still wish the new batteries had better capacity.

I just played that phone information. Network type: unkown! And, I could not set the preferred network type setting. But, everytime I turn it to a type like GSM only, it just turns back to unknow immediately!
Actually, when I flashed a earlier build of Froyo from that sourceforge site, EDGE worked for my phone.

I love 3g, but after one week on Edge only, and therefore with great battery life, I get off the plane in London and 4hrs later my battery is rub down.
I really do not need 3G, the speed difference for push email is irrelevant...
So any clues how to do this for those of us happy with good old gprs?
The search system is your friend... Check the main Hermes forum.

You can change the band the phone uses, its in phone>options>network(tab)
(i think)
just choose the appropriate band for GSM .

Wow. You get four hours? I'm lucky to get three in 3G mode with instant push enabled. I finally decided that I can live with getting email every 15 minutes and having my battery last 10 hours.

Search Google or the forums for "Hermes BandSwitch" -- click on the link for Comm Mgr Pro, then the link for BandSwitch (but check out Comm Mgr Pro, too).
BandSwitch is the easiest tool for switching between 3G and GSM. Some OS versions have a "Band" tab in the Phone Options screen, but most do not (a lot of operators don't want people screwing with that because they can charge more for 3G). If you have a Band tab, you can force it to GSM -- but only if you don't have an open data connection (it's kind of tricky to kill the connection and get into the options to change the settings -- and it won't let you change them while your radio is off).
What I did was to get the phone in an area where it gets no signal, then go into the phone, options, band, and take it off 3G or auto, and put it to GSM, should work.
AM
Bandswitch
For me, Bandswitch is an absolute no-brainer app to install on your phone. Very quick and easy switching your phone from GMS to 3G to Auto Select .. all from the today screen. It is always the first app install after every re-flash or hard reset of my phone ... as I tend to keep my phone on GSM most of the time to save battery life, and only if I am in a 3G area and know I will need to make tons of calls do I switch back to 3G (so I can send/receive email and chat at the same time).
If you have not checked out this app (see link above) I highly recommend it.
I changed the apn settings on my desire and now I am having problem connecting to the internet using either 3G or hSPDA. before changing the settings I was able to connect to the internet using 3G but now when I have try to go online and the 3G icon is displayed the phone does not do anything and if it will evetually connect to the internet it will only do via the H (HSPDA)... I have reset the apn to default and its all the same, no improvement, I have input the mms settings again with no effect.... no its getting on my nerves now... am thinking of reseting the phone back to factory settings.....
I suggest you get new settings from here: http://support.t-mobile.co.uk/help-and-support/index?page=home&cat=SOFTWAREDOWNLOADS

So far i believed that hd2 and touch 2 phones are wm not android :? ??? strange...
are there any options for different android phones? hero, magic, etc... as they should work with desire
just go to the APN settings and press Menu>return to defaults. The settings are preprogrammed in for t-mobile UK, and they are definitely correct.
As for not being able to connect on 3G, that is a known t-mobile issue. When 3G is showing, it is supposed to change up to H when you try and send/receive data. sometimes, their network does not change up successfully, and you end up sitting on 3G with no data transfer.
turn mobile data off and back on again and that usually fixes it. There's three or four threads on that on the T-mobile website.
Now this is interesting ...
After I read your reply below, I think that issue is NOT only in the UK.
Because I use T-Mobile NL and I got exactly the same problem!!!
I am still using my HTC Kaiser though and I was (still) confused why I "suddenly" could not connect to the internet
I use Opera Mini, at first it was connected fine, browsed several websites and then suddenly dead on ... cannot connect.
Restart Opera Mini, same issue ... the connection still there.
Restart the data connection ... there you go, I was able to browse again.
Damn! I did not know that this is T-Mob issue I tried to clean my WM device, reinstall Opera and whatnot ....
Oh yeah, this issue just happened recently ... like a month or two months.
Before that, I have no problem like this.

I have a new, unlocked Tilt2. It's now connected to Telstra Australia. I can send/receive email (POP3) call anyone and connect to the net via wifi but not through the 3G (Telstra NextG, WCDMA 850Mhz) service. Is the ROM locked to only browse in the USA?
I have tried flashing the unit using one of the available ROM but it just doesn't work. The progress graph just stays stuck at 0% and makes no progress at all.
Any clues?
The Tilt 2 on AT$T requires you to disable the proxy for Wifi and enable it for MediaNet (3G). Could that be your problem?
OK,I'll try that out.
In the mean time I downloaded and installed Opera 5 Mini beta. It works really well on both Wifi and 3G without any settings changed. I'm actually impressed.
That suggests that there is some cobbled together code/lock in the MIE browser that forces it to oerate (or not operate) in a pareticular way. My next step will be to remove that stupid bit of software.
How can I suck out the ROM and do some of my own cobbling/cooking?
How can you add shortcuts to different screens, like the App's folder?
Cheers,
Chris
The OEM Opera and IE do not work on Wifi for me (damn AT$T), so I use Skyfire instead. Much better browser IMO. You can't uninstall anything from ROM, but you can get a cooked ROM with stuff removed. You're in the right place to learn about mods and ROMs, just keep reading and do some searches. This is higher level stuff, so don't jump into it right away.
That's interesting. I have been told by some people in our local Cell Phone store that some imported models have their browser locked to their originatiing carrier when on the 3G/GSM network. That means that mine would not browse except through AT&Ts network.
I have tried re-flashing my unit 5 times with various ROMs but NONE of them work. They all hang with the PC and the Tilt2 at 0% on the progress graph. The software on the PC times out and suggests a way to reboot the Tilt2. I have also tried copying the image on to the MicroSD card and doing a hard bootload start (Hold down the [reduce-volume] button while switching the unit on) but that just resulted in the device sitting there with the word "SERIAL" near the bottom where USB is written when flashing from the PC.
True to it's name. This Tilt2 ST-7377 is a Fortress. I can't get any software into it.
Hi there,
Maybe I haven't searched in the right area's, but I certainly have had a look around and couldn't find anything to match my exact issue.
I've just purchased an HTC Desire from Telstra in Australia, but I'm based in New Zealand and so didn't want or need all of the built in Telstra stuff so I rooted the device and installed the HTC official Froyo build for the device.
All worked perfectly and the upgrade was successful and all I needed to do was to add 2 APN's, one for mobile data and one for MMS.
Now they connect up perfectly when I manually connect them, but if I open up Internet for example, I'd have expected it to automatically connect up to 3G data if no wireless is available but it doesn't it just says no connection.
The mobile data APN is set as the default and has a green selection next to it when I look at them.
Am I missing something ?? I'm an Android newbie so please excuse this if it's something obvious and I'm being dumb !
Geeeez I'd have expected someone to have been able to answer what I'm sure is such a simple feature / expectation.
All my previous windows mobile devices just hooked up with WIFI if available and 3G if not, I didn't have to manually connect. As soon as a program needed access to 3G it just hooked up and did what it needed.
One thing I was hoping for in Android was that it would hook up as the windows mobile did, but would switch itself off if it wasn't used for a while......... something Windows Mobile didn't do so it would go flat pretty quick if you had it checking the web on a regular basis as it would just leave the 3G connection running even though there was no data flowing.
Come on people.......... do other peoples Android devices hook up automatically when required ??? or am I just expecting too much ?

Yes it does. Other than turning mobile internet off and on, I'm not even certain how you would "manually connect"?
Regards,
Dave
canman your Desire ought to automatically grab the APN settings with a SIM card installed, when you power it up. Failing that, once you manually enter correct settings it should automatically use those. There is no "manual connection" I know of, just enter the APN settings, or verify they are correct, and you never have to do this again. Double-check that the settings are correct. Also, if you are using wifi turn that off until you are sure that your mobile data is working ok. If you have done everything correctly and you are getting error messages, the phone is defective and should be returned.
Hello to all members
HTC T-Mobile myTouch 3G remains at: "touch the android to begin"
I've got the code to unlock an HTC myTouch 3G, but after put code in the phone it stop at the step of gmail account configuration, but I have not any data plan because I live in Cuba
I've tried both method: Master or Hard Reset and Four corners one...
I was reading at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=452316, but I don´t have a wifi network that I can connect to
And it still remains at "touch the android to begin" screen
Please help, Is there any way to bypass this step
I live in Cuba and I can´t connect any phone to internet
Thanks a lot
Please anybody help me ?????
google Activate Mytouch 3g via ADB, but i'm not sure if that needs WIFI, rooting it and installing a custom firmware may help to get access without going to the Google Email process
The whole "Four corners" thing is not true.
You're pretty much out of luck if you can't get a 100% data signal, or wifi.
As you need to update to 2.1 in order to bypass the gmail login screen.
I had a Mytouch 3g for a few days, At first I couldn't do anything with it because I can't get a strong signal from Tmobile. I had to drive into town to log in to Gmail to set it up. from there I enabled wifi, and updated the OS to 2.1 from there, I did a full phone wipe, the update stayed, I then clicked the android like normal, except this time around, there was a 'Skip' option for those who need to enable wifi to log in.
The Mytouch 3g is pretty much useless if you can't get a strong data signal.
Sorry.
best bet is to sell the phone.
Touch the four corners works for me. (Admittedly on a different device). Start with upper left and go clockwise (on the bottom you should be touching directly above the change language/bar).
