I am loving all the custom ROMS that are out there but why are there not any ROMS based off the original cube that came with the phone? I thought the functionality of the cube was cool but it was a secondary function that most people did not use. What if the phone loaded with the cube as the main tool for operating the phone and then each side of the cube worked the same way the tabs do in M2D? Now it seems like most ROMS have completely removed the cube function altogether.
Just wondering.

Cube has pretty much ran its course and people have moved on to newer shiny things LOL
Cube seems to also been a hassle with the TF2D/Manilla setup as well hence the reason most disable it
Now the common is TF2d or 6.5 ROMs but there is alot of info here on original ROM like customs and you could cook up one to your likes then
Detroit Doug
yeah when I first got my phone I thought the cube feature was cool and very iphone like.. but now using NFSFAN's 6.1 rom with the diamond style scroll bar I would not bother going back to the cube.. you can see exactly what you are selecting at your fingertips instead of constantly swiping that freaking cube around.. yeah it doesn't look as cool but it gets the same job done faster.
Cube doesn't work with TouchFlo 2D, which, let's face it, is a much better interface than the original HTC Home. There's just not a demand for something that is less adequate, and nobody wants to make a ROM that they can't get a little donation money out of
The cube wasn't really all that great to begin with.
Hey,
Just install HTC Home/Cube yourself. No one is stopping you from downloading the cabs and installing.
Good luck.
I agree with the OP, I also miss the cube. The best part about it is the fact that it provides an EXTREMELY EASY way to open your commonly used programs over whatever you currently have running. M2D on the other hand requires the is a hassle in that you have to minimize everything, and then focus all your attention to scrolling, and then click. And then it becomes a chore to go back to what you were originally doing...on the cube all you had to do was either minimize the cube or X out of the program you just called up using the cube.
The cube was cool, but it's history lol! If you want the cube, use the custom cube.
I don't think the Cube is history at all. I think the reason Detroit Doug mentioned is the main reason it was abandoned: not compatible with TF2D. HOWEVER, with WM 6.5 ROMs springing up thanks to the likes of NFSFAN, I think it is worth looking into again to re-include the cube or some updated version of it.
Personally, I still don't see a launcher for speed-dials that beats it in convenience and speed. I use Touch Commander as a replacement myself. I believe it's the best cube replacement out there and you can get it for free really easily by doing a trial-pay.
I just built a rom from drellisdee's 21202 kitchen and the old cube app works great.
Wouldn`t the swiping gesture to open the cube interfer with the other gestures embedded in WM 6.5 though?

really? nothing faster ?
Im using the V7 and added the MyFavs on the main CHome screen...
one tap to MyFavs, swipe either right left, tap on face and hit dial.. seems about as fast as cube if not faster by not having to swipe up then scroll around
I personally really like the cube, but tech moves on, steam cars would still be all over if it didnt move on LOL

Why don't cook a ROM with TOUCHFLO2D? Our Diamond could be faster!
Yeah this sounds like a good idea! I would personally prefer a blazing fugging fast 1.93 2D ROM than a sluggish 1.93 3D ROM... (Black Diamond theme of course )
i agree with you...
i use a ROM without TF3d (french Diamondstone rom) and i install Opal version of TF2d (found on this forum) and it work very fine, much faster tan the 3d version
maybe someone can try to cook this way.
it looks good on your device? since its qvga... or did someone edit it to work on vga?
o yar a faster diamond
just what i need..
the 3d is nice and all.. but after a while.. gets tired looking at it.. and besides the 2d version aint that bad...
and the analog clock is so much cooler...
Is there a VGA Version out?? I thought only for QVGA devices
I think 3d is fast enough and great for day-to-day usability?

Here's a VGA version. It's uncluding some bugs, but enough to try it.
You need to install the TFLO 2D version 0.9 or older!

You can edit the xml file and the images to customize.
I'm using it about 3 days.

thanks a lot bro!
It would be great to have ROM with TF2D! it will result in much faster diamond, extra stogare and memory.
hope one of our great developers will work on it.
cheers.
Faster perhaps. More boring and a step backwards, definitely! With so many super-quick ROMS for tf3d (Swift, Swtos etc), why would anyone want to do this? Too much time on your hands? ;-)

Because different people have different preference. Some prefer snappy performance before eyecandy, tf2d over tf3d, windows xp over vista...
While the new cooked ROMs definetly are faster than stock, the same cooked ROM with tf2d instead would be even faster while offering the same functionality.
The ultimate ROM!

I agree completely! With that kind of speed (like with the tf2d) this ui would be an IPhone killer...
The only thing I am wondering about is, that nobody (as far as I have seen) yet inlcuded a proper SMS (only) Tool (like in iContacts, but without the contacts), because the WM5 version is indiscribably bad..
To bring it to a point (and I hope this is not too far off this topic): Why has nobody yet created a rom that comes standard with S2U2 installed and something like iContact (which directly replaces all the WM5 contacts and the links i.e. from tf3d / tf2d) and a Programs/settings views like in iPhonez(but only that part not the whole iPhonez, we want a killer, not a copy!). and last but not least something like a proper touch-fileexplorer like resco explorer2008(i simply mean the size of the file entries and a little revamping of the original fileexplorer, maybe there is one already?)
If a ROM like that would be put together well (and one of these capable cooks are able to include these tools much deeper and better than when a user installs them into the ROM) we could finally beat the iPhone! (I know its not about beating the iphone, but fact is that the diamond has one nice tf3d tool on top of the same old WM5 which in its original rom is slaggishly slow and is then supposed to beat the well thought through iPhone?? Of course not! there is no alternative that brings the same quality of UI - YET, BUT:
All these great programmers that took their time to create good apps (like iPhonez, iContact, ThumpCal, S2U2, etc..) if (and I know it probably is a challenge to get their agreement to put their stuff in a rom) this would be put togethere into one well made rom, the diamond would be unbeatable!!!!!!
Then get this ROM a bit known as the iphone-killer and this will be picked up in the public a bit more.. finally it could turn out that all these nice programmers get a big bunch of money so that their stuff or a version of it will be used as a permanent part of a stock rom and we all are happy because we will have the best phone ever, made by the people for the people! WHAT A VISION! and its realistic, too! Let's go and use the synergy of all the great cooks and developers and create the SUPER-ROM!!!!
I am ready to pay good developer 50USD to include the existing tools into a personalized ROM, just to have something that prooves the idea and convince the guys to give their permission. (and also to have that myself! )
So who wants the ultimate ROM!!
avers can u give us all the edited files of the tf2d vga u are using ? thanks

Where can I find this VGA skin (the one in the attached thumnail)
Thank you
I have been doing some looking around already, even before I got my Touch HD or joined this forum but I don't seem to have dug up much so far.
Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places, I don't know - I'm still rather new to WinMo, so it's a distinct possibility.
Basically, I'm not hugely fussed on TouchFlo.
I mean don't get me wrong, it's not terrible and I can think of far worse interfaces but half the reason I went for a WinMo handset was to be able to customise and tweak it.
So whilst I'm far from hating my phone, I am wondering if maybe there's something better out there.
So far, in terms of alternatives, I'm aware of the Xperia panels (which currently don't work on the HD), whatever exactly the name is of Samsung's UI that runs on the Omnia (which I just don't like the look of), something called 'PointUI' (which seems to resemble a rather simplistic TouchFlo clone, from what I've seen in screendumps) and Winterface I think it's called (but if I wanted a phone with the iPhone's UI, I wouldn't've bought an HTC).
I'm also aware that other companies who also make WinMo handsets have their own UIs as well but the only one I've read anything about so far is the UI that Asus use and what I read wasn't good. Plus, obviously, there's the UI for the up-coming TG01 but it doesn't really jump out at me.
What I'm wondering than is if there's any notable exceptions from the group I've listed, or even any not-so-notable/relatively unheard-of ones.
I'm just looking for something... different. I know that's not much to go on but I suppose the truth is that I don't really know myself what I'm after.
Something that stands out is probably about as close a description as I can offer up.
Any help or advice will, of course, be greatly appreciated.
edit: apologies for posting this in the wrong place.
You could try Wisbar Advance Desktop with one of the WVGA skins you find here, or even make one yourself.
WAD is highly customizable, you can create almost anything you like.
Another UI is Bell UI, which is pretyy similar to TouchFlo.
hello,
on my side I have chosen UltimateLaunch. Quite satisfying for its simplicty and customization possibilities.
I actually did not like TF3D at first, now I've been seduced by it !
BUT, I have SecondToday running so at a touch of my right softkey I have a new today screen which now is full of PocketBreeze and various other today plugins on the vertical Tabs.

My objective (when I stabilize my installation ...) is to have the TF3D as a plugin inside the first Tab of my UltimateLaunch UI.
You could try some of the cubes,

I've just set this up a day ago - works very well indeed. 2ndToday is launched from the Left softkey (as detailed elsewhere in this forum) and pocketbreeze can fill the screen nicely.
I owe both a Polaris and a Blackstone and, in my opinion, TouchCube is far better than TF3D. TF3D looks nice but let's face it... it eats up system resources, it's laggy, when browsing through tabs it's not very thumb friendly (you have to bend your thumb to the max), you can't customize the tabs position (it would help if they were placed on one side because it would be easier to scroll through the same number of items having at least 30% more room to place the tabs), the so called customization... is way too limited (you get to change the fonts, the tab order, the shortcuts... in the end you'll get the same layout), the multimedia section was divided with the unhappy default association of the video files with an application clearly meant for photos...
So... my question: can the TouchCube be ported on the Blackstone and, along with it the Polaris Audio Manager? Can the Album application be "broken" in two applications one handling the photos and the other the videos?
I was thinking just the other day "what happened to the cube?"
It was pretty cool. Think it would be good a replacement for the action screen thats floating about?

and what about ergonomics?
So... I get it that no developer is interested in porting the Cube to Blackstone
I have never tried it, but how about the option "Cube" under HTC TouchFLO when using Advanced Config. How about changing that to Enabled, will that do the job?
I'll make it my next project
I'm currently finishing an animated today screen for this phone while docked but when I'm done that that I'll start work on a cube launcher that replaces the current Program's tab with a custom app that gives you a cube with multiple options for launching programs... icon view, rotate to list view, rotate to cover-flow view etc
Did you try the cube here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=336234
Maybe you just have to adapt to wvga screen ?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=336234
I tried this one instead... installs ok but it's for qvga it starts and then it goes to the top-left corner. the animations work just fine, some of the links must be rebuilt... and that's about it. But... i mus admit it... i don't have the knowledge to port it to WVGA...

I appreciate the work of the people at SPB. It seams they did a good job. But... I am not a phonecentric person and something like the cube suites me better. SPBM3 looks like it requires a lot of time to be customized and even when you think you got it you wake up with a fully texted today screen and a directions map to help you swipe through screens...
The HTC TouchCube might seam blunt compareing it to SPBM3 but this is what I like about it... an easy way to launch/hide, easy recognition of the page you're in... i can't explain it very well but for me... the TouchCube is more natural, more organized and a better interface than the windows start menu when it comes to basic tasks.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! SPB Mobile 3 looks great... forget what I wrote before. No need to write what they have already written

yea spb mobile shell 3.0 does look good buuuuuuttttttttttttt its not free cost almost $30 and to be honest like many of you have been saying, i do miss the cube app from the htc touch...that app was very cool an useful plus i loved how when you needed it you just swiped up an when you were done you swiped down an that was that... SO I TO HOPE THAT IT CAN BE RESIZED FOR VGA AND WVGA!!!!!
Mrferrari23
If only I could... I'd do it myself
If it was posible id like the touchcube too, it's more finger friendly imo and it's faster to use. Like said before, if I knew how to do it myself, I would..
Bell UI
Browsing the internet I found the Bell UI. Looks quite nice.
To all the chefs out there... is there a chance to port this to HD? 'Cause I'm kinda' giving up the idea of the Cube being ported to the HD...
Hi all, its been a while since I posted but I am the former user of the 8125,8525, and 8925 (tilt) and haven't used a pocket pc phone since then. I had my stints with the Fuze & Touch HD but thats another story. Anyways Ive been using the iPhone 3g/3gs for the last year and I recently sold it to purchase the AT&T Tilt 2. I must say although the phone is very good looking and this is the best qwerty I have ever used, the phone lags and it is kinda slow especially comparing phones like the iPhone or BBerry Bold 2. What are my options in terms of Navigating the GUI without TF3D? I remember when I used to own my pocketpc's I used a program called "HTC Home" which was simple, fast, and efficient. Does that program still work on the Rhodium? Do I have any options of using something similar to the TF3d but faster? Or will changing my ROM make the difference up in speed? Let me know what you all think and thanks in advance. Also What does "Manilla" mean?
Dude there are so many ways to have a decent UI without manila go through a lot of the rom threads and read about each one, Most have light versions and a titanium version that eliminate tf3d completely. MANILA= TF3D they are one and the same as I see it, some people might get more technical with you but its like a tilt 2 and a touch pro 2 different names for basically the same thing, minus a few hardware differences when talking devices. Also Give SPB Mobile Shell a try, you can download a trial and if yuo like it can either purchase it or do one of those promotions and get it cheap o pm me and I'll let you know where to find it I myself love tf3d and cant wait till it becomes fully modifyable with the ability to make my own tabs for whatever we see fit, It will happen just gonna take a while and have some genius' coding things so quick links can be installed in the script with copy and paste so its easy for everyone to do. I think there may be a few other 3rd party UIs out there too, so just play around and see what fits you. And if you cant fully uninstall something its not like a hard reset cant be done! Always backup what you dont want to lose.
See here for HTC Home for WVGA/VGA devices.
Buy an HD2
Windows default "titanium" is also very customizable and much less RAM eating than TF3D.
I´ll stay with Manila 2.1 working very smooth for me
I really lost interest in this phone the more I used it - I found tf3d to be too slow... Rather than flash ROMS, I gave SPB Mobile Shell a try. It's awesome! I removed all items from the today screen and just run the shell.
Memory usage is different as well. Before I had to keep it under 50% to get the phone to run. With Mobile Shell I just keep opening programs up to 80% and the interface doesn't lag.
Give it a try...
Want a familiar and friendly (as well as FAAST) interface?
Google iPhoneToday. It's mimics the iPhone interface and is very easy to setup shortcuts and icons.
Simply go t your SETTINGS>TODAY button and disable TF3D and ENABLE iPhoneToday.
I love this interface much better as it's quick and to the point. Also less memory uses than TF3D
Hello all!
I am just coming off of using a Tilt for 3 years, and finally it died. In my opinion, it was the best phone I ever owned. I had high expectations for this new tilt2, but alas - when it arrived, I was dismayed at all of the crapware, levels of junk, and the lack of ability to control what icons I see on the start menu (which looks like someone vomited icons all over the screen - no organization to them at all - I have to dig 3 menus deep just to find file explorer, and FORGET about the wireless manager! It's hopeless!
Why oh why have they taken away the customization that made WM great?
On my old Tilt, I simply ran the stock rom, and did the reset to avoid all the att crapware, for a plain vanilla WM5 device. I then ran Kaisertweak, and HTC Home customizer. It ran whatever apps I threw at it, and ran them well.
My only complaint would be that compared to the iphone, the apps look and feel clunkier, but as I said, they worked very well, so who cares? Even the freeware Opera browser worked well, if inferior to Safari - but not terrible.
Is there any way to make this one look and act like that? What I wouldnt give for it to run WM5, I swear...
I have owned: Casiopea e150, dell x3, dell x5, royaltech PPC w/ gps, Eten M600, Glofiish X500, ATT 8125, ATT tilt, Iphone 2g, Iphone 3g, and now this.
I am not afraid of tweaking, although I dislike 'cooked' roms - Id rather fix a clean factory release.
Of all of those, the (old) Tilt was my woobee. I might just see if I can find another one somewhere. I like the new screen, and the fact it can play xvid movies without a recode, but damn...is it worth it? I'm afraid to put any software on this thing, because I might never find it again!

Best advice I can offer sense you dont really want a cooked rom is to grab a Program like Total commander and remove the icons you dont want and rearrange it anyway you would like
How about this: can someone point me to a plain vanilla WM6.1 (if that will work) or a WM6.5 ROM and maybe a few device driver cabs?
Oh, and by the way - I hate the 70's flipdown clock. I wish I could at choose how that looks. My god...the WM developers have now painted themselves into a corner!
*grumble grumble*
Subterran-
I think you may be overreacting a bit. I don't understand, with all of your device experience, why you aren't willing to find a cooked ROM that suits your needs and just slap it on there.
I tried the stock HTC ROM from here, http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Rhodium/Shipped_Roms, and found it to be a good alternative.
There are programs to change the interface, i.e. SPB Mobile Shell, which will let you get rid of what seems to be your biggest complaint.. There are programs to do just about anything you want it to do.
Oh, I also had a Tilt1 (Tytn II) and this one is an improvement over it, though it was a very good device.

All better! Thanks all!
OK - yes I must admit, I was overreacting. I jumped out and grabbed the very capable SPD mobile shell, and that took care of me being completely lost because of the worlds nuttiest start menu (!)
Here is my complete load, in case anyone is interested:
Stock 6.5 ATT ROM
Install .net 3.5 so I can use:
Crudscraper (Awesome way to clean the bloatware out, thanks!)
SPB Mobile Shell (this completely bypasses the default start menu / home - good riddance!)
1% Increment Battery Driver
K-Battery (a slick, freeware battery meter that looks great)
Memory Map Weather Radar
Vito Audionotes MP3 recorder
National Geographic Pocket Topo
Odyssey Mobile Navigator
Backcountry Navigator
TCPMP Player (Orb looks ver nice!)
WMWifirouter
Resco Regedit
Phoenix Studio
Then just customize SPB like I want it, and BAM - POW! How you like me now!
I REALLY like the mount-as-disc feature for accessing the microsd. About time! I am much happier with this phone.
Thanks XDA!
Looks like you're settled on Mobile Shell. If you ever feel like using the default start menu, I use JWMD Icon Changer to sort the icons, make folders, and (obviously) change icons. As another mentioned, you can use Total Commander to move the icons.
