here is something that i need your opinions, and it concerns spb mobile shell 3 and manila. based on what i have seen on the forum, it appeares most people use manila a lot because when ever a cooked rom is released by any one of our master chefs there is always mention of either something not working on manila, and judging by the number of concerns that people have towards manila, it appeares to me that most people actually use it a lot. i myself however the first thing i do, when ever i flash a new rom is to disable touch flo, which i believe is manila and instead use state of the art spb mobile shell 3, however, i just need your own opinions as to why you would just either manila(touch flo) instead of spb mobile shell 3 thanks
i use spb about one month and my opinion is , a very good program!!!!
Personally, I disable TF3D on every rom as well. In fact, I look for the versions without TF3D.
I really like TF3D, how everything is laid out and how it gives really easy access to so much information and ties so deeply into everything... However... it is slow.
Every time I'd start up my device I'd have to load up each tab once into the ram so I'd get fluid movements when I need it. (Contacts tab takes several seconds to load up the first time.) Not only that, I found myself disabling nearly all the tabs. As cool as it was, it was just too heavy for me when I only need really basic information.
I used SPB Mobile shell 2 back on my Hermes for the longest time, nearly the entire lifespan of the device, truly a great program. (That was until TF2D came out, then everything changed.) Allowed really quick access to the most important information without getting in the way of normal windows mobile. Sadly it wasn't very pretty no matter how many skins one tried.
SPB Mobile Shell 3 however, seemed very awkward to me. Accessing simply information was a pain and involved complex maneuvers to get to something that should be very simple. The 3rd version while filled to the brim with eye candy is bloated for me. All I need is a today screen, calendar, contacts and programs. I don't need a carousel nor do I need an absurd amount of buttons or cool animations to get me there either.
My choice:
Titanium on wm6.5
It has enough eye candy for me and is very simple and very fast. I'd kill for a full calendar on the today screen, but thumbcal off the appointments tab does enough for me.
version i tried was ugly, unworthy of the screen and resolution HD has, also confusing, didn't like the layout, contacts look....actually, didn't like anything
TouchFlo is simpler and better looking, really shows the screen in all it's glory and i could spend time just flicking through it to see how pretty and smooth it is, the new calendar, weather tab, people tab, sms tab....i'm shallow :/
now i use Titanium, both pretty and easy to use and customize :/
I prefer Manila. I do not have bugs on my rom. I tried SPB MS 3 but it's not as smooth as manila, no way. Icons has to load every time, then I do not have the "smooth" impression. However, scrolling in MS 3 is very fast.
For now, Manila is the best interface I tried. This is just my personnal opinion, not a judgement of MS 3.
thanks a lot guys i have used spb for a while and i must admit the new version spb 3 is the best and it is very fast as well in my opinion. i think once you learn how to use it, it does become very easy to use, ecspecially the new widgets, but what then are the advantages you guys see in manila

I don`t know which version you have tried, but if it has been version 3, I guess that your comment would be completely opposite. When you try the third version, and you still like better TouchFlo - then it is only question of taste...
it was, it was green, green should be illegal....those tabs at the bottom left and right are ugly, but nothing compared to those icons in between them Contacts tab cannot compare with the TF3D People tab, weather widget cannot compare to the weather tab, point by point it's just not as pretty, glossy, shiny, eye-candy, TF3D and Titanium are both a very functional eye-candy....everything is 1 or 2 pretty icons away
i like things simple but shiny, SPB MS is neither :/

I am using both for about 4 weeks. Spb Mobile Shel 3.0 for work and Manila after work. I wish i could change the taskbar of spb to manila style or even to make the background complete black and not grey so i would use only spb.
I did try them all and right now I am using manila with certain tabs active ... sms, music, internet, photos and vids, progs and thats it. plus sometimes i activate a program that i just keep there for certain times its called winter face a very light smooth application that gives you an iphone like interface and its free.
i used spb keyboard and paid for it and replaced it now with fingerkeyboard which is free but far better and the same happened when i tried spb 2 and 3
now i have no spb application on my HD and i am happier
I think i will stick manila and winterface till i get Titanium on wm6.5 when winmo is officially out

Both TF3d better
I have used both .. answer :
TF3D is more intergrated eg with TXT's pictures and music .
with the shell you have use the phone own txt inbox and not the raher cute scroll in tf3d , this is the same with the music etc..
I want everything in one place .. and if possile not have to see the under bonet ..
Anyone disabled TF3D and kept the original WM home screen interface? I personally disabled it and kept the original interface even though I don't like how the WM SMS look. I disabled it because I don't like the default TF3D colors and I tried changing it black, but it's a no go. I don't know why! I did change the background and the drop menu all black which looks pretty neat since anything black looks good. What I really want is the WM6.5 Zune interface so I can't wait for WM6.5 official release!!!
Let us know what you have.
TF3D does not appeal to me!
TF3D is pretty, so people "oooo" and "aaah" over the phone and buy it.
However, I still think that TF3D is a bunch of useless kitsch that gets in the way of actually using the phone effectively. After a few hours of it interfering with what I want to do, I turned it off. (At least this time it took a few hours and not a few minutes.)
This is especially true of the messaging (it's just in the way), and the photo album. (who wants to see tiny, slanted, distorted versions of the pictures?) It's been a while, so I cannot remember the other specific things that annoyed me.
TF3D was the first thing I disabled on the device... I don't like that I cannot choose my own programs and way of working.
I use Wisbar Advance and Wisbar Desktop
on my personal Touch HD I much prefered the TouchFLo interface to the standard windows one - saying that, that was running a Dutty ROM
However on my work TP2 - I have it disabled as it gets in the way of my business apps - i.e. MS Communicator etc.
TF3D has bad things an good things.
The biggest failure and that's why TF3D is just crap is because it's not intuitive and easy to use. Way to many steps to get things done, pretty useless taskbar (exepts for the killing programs part). You can do to much information on one screen at the same time and too little. It's nice that they include things like a calendar, but it's pretty useless and in many ways TF3D makes the use of third party software actually harder.
The very good things about touchflo 3d is the push pages, the scheduels, and the best thing is the fueture to see all of your conversation with one contact. I really love it. Next to that it's snappy and pretty.
Well I treid SPB mobile shell 3, but it just doesn't do it. Also many features, but the fact is: when I use my phone it's to get something done pretty quickly. I just want to be able that I have a good view of all the info I need (messages, appointments) in the least ammount of time and to be able to do something in little time. The regular wm is just very easy. Start - settings/programs - choose- done.
Seeing my messages when there is a new one I get a popup and pres view and I there. I do not have to click the task baar. Get a new screen there push on the button, then being transported to the touchflo tab and then have to choose the message.
THats 2 clicks vs 4/5 clicks.
I kept the default TF3d for now, as soon as the official WM 6.5 ROM will be available, I'll switch to the Titanium UI.

SPB Mobile Shell 3.0. I like having one-touch access to everything I need (email, sms, weather, contacts, favorites, apps, etc...) right on the front page.

An interesting 'Widget' based replacement for TF3D I came on when I was looking around on XDA.
"FEWidgets Ultimate" by nicodega.
It replaces TF3D completely as a 'Today' plugin.
Basically one just has to install the CAB.
(Note: it will not show up under All Programs, but as a Today plugin only)
> Go into Settings> Today>
> Remove check next TF3D
> Enable Check next to FEWidgets Ultimate
Two versions- Large widgets and Small Widgets for anyone who needs a whole bunch of widgets.
I did try it out on my TMO TP2 and both versions basically work when I tested each separately.
Though I haven't tried fine-tuning each widget for my TP2 yet.
Enjoy.
i kept my TP1 and gave the TP2 to Dad whose TmoWing crapped out. Had to disable TF3D for him today. The last straw was contacts/call history will not allow you to dial out, it's link to the phone dialer was broken or something. I don't know if this is a result of a tweak I did or if the Tmo's TF3D version has a bug. After disabling TF3D, you can press the contacts again to call out. For future reference, anyone know the cause/solution?
Like above guy said, now I need a replacement for tf3d. The last version of BatteryStatus that I used was 1.04build266 from this time last year, which has since been replaced by HomeScreenPlusPlus or something like that. Anyone know of a stable version for the TP2? Stable enough for Dad?
Today Plugins
I kept the default TF3D, but with HDWall, because I love the eye-candy of the interface and I find it very intuitive to use. I have also tried other today plugins, such as PointUI Home 2, FEWidgetsUltimate and iPhonetoday, but none of them felt as smooth and easy to use as TF3D for me. Out of the other interfaces I tried I find FEWidgetsUltimate to be the best.

LINK - FEWidgetsUltimate
LINK - HDWall
LINK - PointUI
EDIT: On my previous device I tried SPB Mobile Shell - LINK
I also got rid of TF3D. IMHO that is eye candy for people who don't know how to use a computer - and that is still a large number of people out there using phones. W/o TF3D I get things quicker done and have more flexibility to set up the phone the way I use it best.

Thanks for the link! HDWall and Mobileshell looks nice.
It is VERY usefull for me! I can't use without! I'm bored by WinMo interface.
I too found TF obtrusive and unintuitive so switched it off. I used to use SPB Mobile Shell on the Kaiser and liked it, but I'm a bit fed up of the way it doesn't integrate with Informant and Flexmail, so I'm back to the WM interface and don't miss all the bloat.
Hello all!
I am just coming off of using a Tilt for 3 years, and finally it died. In my opinion, it was the best phone I ever owned. I had high expectations for this new tilt2, but alas - when it arrived, I was dismayed at all of the crapware, levels of junk, and the lack of ability to control what icons I see on the start menu (which looks like someone vomited icons all over the screen - no organization to them at all - I have to dig 3 menus deep just to find file explorer, and FORGET about the wireless manager! It's hopeless!
Why oh why have they taken away the customization that made WM great?
On my old Tilt, I simply ran the stock rom, and did the reset to avoid all the att crapware, for a plain vanilla WM5 device. I then ran Kaisertweak, and HTC Home customizer. It ran whatever apps I threw at it, and ran them well.
My only complaint would be that compared to the iphone, the apps look and feel clunkier, but as I said, they worked very well, so who cares? Even the freeware Opera browser worked well, if inferior to Safari - but not terrible.
Is there any way to make this one look and act like that? What I wouldnt give for it to run WM5, I swear...
I have owned: Casiopea e150, dell x3, dell x5, royaltech PPC w/ gps, Eten M600, Glofiish X500, ATT 8125, ATT tilt, Iphone 2g, Iphone 3g, and now this.
I am not afraid of tweaking, although I dislike 'cooked' roms - Id rather fix a clean factory release.
Of all of those, the (old) Tilt was my woobee. I might just see if I can find another one somewhere. I like the new screen, and the fact it can play xvid movies without a recode, but damn...is it worth it? I'm afraid to put any software on this thing, because I might never find it again!

Best advice I can offer sense you dont really want a cooked rom is to grab a Program like Total commander and remove the icons you dont want and rearrange it anyway you would like
How about this: can someone point me to a plain vanilla WM6.1 (if that will work) or a WM6.5 ROM and maybe a few device driver cabs?
Oh, and by the way - I hate the 70's flipdown clock. I wish I could at choose how that looks. My god...the WM developers have now painted themselves into a corner!
*grumble grumble*
Subterran-
I think you may be overreacting a bit. I don't understand, with all of your device experience, why you aren't willing to find a cooked ROM that suits your needs and just slap it on there.
I tried the stock HTC ROM from here, http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Rhodium/Shipped_Roms, and found it to be a good alternative.
There are programs to change the interface, i.e. SPB Mobile Shell, which will let you get rid of what seems to be your biggest complaint.. There are programs to do just about anything you want it to do.
Oh, I also had a Tilt1 (Tytn II) and this one is an improvement over it, though it was a very good device.

I think that clock is all HTC's doing. I would like some different options for clocks and some of the cooked ones are good.

All better! Thanks all!
OK - yes I must admit, I was overreacting. I jumped out and grabbed the very capable SPD mobile shell, and that took care of me being completely lost because of the worlds nuttiest start menu (!)
Here is my complete load, in case anyone is interested:
Stock 6.5 ATT ROM
Install .net 3.5 so I can use:
Crudscraper (Awesome way to clean the bloatware out, thanks!)
SPB Mobile Shell (this completely bypasses the default start menu / home - good riddance!)
1% Increment Battery Driver
K-Battery (a slick, freeware battery meter that looks great)
Memory Map Weather Radar
Vito Audionotes MP3 recorder
National Geographic Pocket Topo
Odyssey Mobile Navigator
Backcountry Navigator
TCPMP Player (Orb looks ver nice!)
WMWifirouter
Resco Regedit
Phoenix Studio
Then just customize SPB like I want it, and BAM - POW! How you like me now!
I REALLY like the mount-as-disc feature for accessing the microsd. About time! I am much happier with this phone.
Thanks XDA!
Looks like you're settled on Mobile Shell. If you ever feel like using the default start menu, I use JWMD Icon Changer to sort the icons, make folders, and (obviously) change icons. As another mentioned, you can use Total Commander to move the icons.

WM Prof 6.1 - TP2 - T-Mobile
Trying to figure out what to do about the today screen. I have gone between HTC TouchFLow3d and WM and am not overly happy with either. Left HTC because their contact screen does not return you back to the previous selected contact. I am new to touch screens and it can be painful to finally get to the right contact. Then accidently select the contact above or below, click on back and be returned to the As. WM is just plain ugly.
What are some suggestions. I hear about sbd and cookie. What other interaces are out there and what do you use or suggest?
THanks
I disable Sense and use WisbarAdvancedDesktop 2 to get exactly the interface that looks like I want. There you can build the today screen nearly totally free. Look here for examples:

Titanium (new Windows Mobile Theme).
I think you'll find that the SPB that burton linked to will probably be a lot more comfortable to use, it runs a lot leaner than Sense does, and is just a lot more approachable...but still very powerful when it comes to customizing. And, there's pre-built themes you can apply if you find one that suits you.
If you really like customizing and lots of functionality, you may like Pointui Home2 which I use. See my sig for details... it's memory footprint to comparable to Spb MS too. The theme/suite I use in Home2 is one I coded to look like WP7, but have real functionality not just look nice/flashy.
i am leaning towards a commercial, paid interface to replace TF3D. need it to be pretty stable. i have already spent so much time playing with this phone that my family is about to mutany. so betweem spb and pointui how would you rate their stability, ability to customize, and ease of customization - and anything else to compare.

I honestly haven't used the pointui interface myself yet, but I can say that SPB is ultra-stable (especially compared to TF3D and Sense), and presents a nice small load to the system resources. It's been around for years, and even ran smooth and stable on my previous HTC phone, the Wizard, which had barely a third of the processor power and memory capacity that the TP2 has. It's also about as easy to configure as a phone GUI can be, and extremely flexible and customizable....there's literally dozens and dozens of themes and styles available for it, both here and across the net, all of which are extremely easy to apply and/or switch between.
I'm not saying anything bad about pointui, I just don't know it. However, I do believe that SPB will have more "ready-to-use" stuff to find than pointui, just based on how often I see them.
Also, SPB allows you a free trial version, so you can give it a try without committing
sirphunkee is correct about Sbp MS. Compared to Pointui Home2 it is much easier to hit the ground running with it and is more polished overall with lots of customization. Both it and Pointui are very stable on just about any device. Both can get away with low memory footprints since they offload larger sized images to storage memory, though I'm not sure if MS can, but Pointui allows you set the image threshold to either use more memory for speed or more storage if you need memory to run more apps or stay stable. I've used all flavors Pointui and all the other UI's and I aways come back to Pointui, since it's scripting engine is just as powerful (C#-based) as MortScript allowing for extreme customization and speed at the OS level. Sorry rambling... to sum it up there are many UI's/Today plug-ins that are great and varied. I'll list some, but besides TF3D/Sense, Titanium the most integrated for WM the 2 imho that are at the top are Pointui Home2 and Spb MS3.5.
Here some others to try...
1. HomeScreen++ formerly BatterStatus very powerful Today plugin and great for integrating standard today screen with most PIM info or just having single screen for all important info.
2. iLauncher
3. ThrottleLauncher
4. Infinity
5. And more...
Again to me MS and Home2 are the best and both have trial versions that don't really expire. Go with Home2 if you need more functionality (PIM-wise) and love to spend time customizing otherwise go with MS3.5 if you want instant eye-candy and shorter prep time customization-wise. Both have all the basics and more to start off and both have great support communities (I'm a community dev on Pointui forums). Whichever you choose, these two, or some other will be a great choice.
Okay, so I have been playing with the XDAndroid port on my touch pro 2 (t-Mobile).
the reason I wanted to try the Port was 2 fold. 1) I was less than happy with the touch flow 3D interface and the regular interface w/ t-mobile's ROM and 2) I wanted to give android a try.
Now having more or less successfully installed the port (A couple of minor quirks that I am sure will be resolved with some more digging) I am at a crossroads.
Android hadn't totally impressed so I wanted to pose the question on what is the best way to get my touch pro 2, which is a pretty powerful phone, to operate at it's optimum speed while still having a nice and organizable interface?
Any suggestions?
thanks
Rob
BUMP - Please Help!
have u consider looking at the NRG rom? its pretty darn fast. i like it .
I haven't looked at any ROM's in particular. The ROM thread is extensive and i couldn't decipher the lingo to make heads or tails of it.
Is there a directory or site or something that breaks down each ROM?
Thanks
Rob
have you tried spb mobile shell in my opinion it works much better than touch flo and is totallty customizable. Android is fun to play with though im not sure it is good for regular use. I may be wrong on that though.
Okay so I got around to flashing an NRG ROM and the Touch Sense is certainly better than the Touch Flo3D, but I was still unhappy with it. so I tried the SPB Shell Demo and though a few quirks I like it much better.
Now the question is, how do I solve these quirks?
(Keep in mind I only have the demo version right now)
1) The Sense and NRG Rom seem to override the SPB interface for things like SMS and Email. The SPB interfaces for these look much better and would seem to function the way I want them to, but i can't figure out how to get them to work.
2) The Top Function/Task Bar is still the NRG bit and though it is graphically appealing, it doesn't seem to work quite as well as the my default TMO ROM, and doesn't seem to be necessary as part of the SPB Shell. Any ideas on that?
3) the FN (Actually ALT on my device) key on the slide out keyboard is programmed differently. i learned it is swapped with the CTRL key, so it is functional but, i am wondering if there is a way to change that?
I think if I can solve these three issues then I may just be happy enough with the SPB Shell to purchase it.
Thanks for the help!

Have you tried XDAndroid Startup Utility... It might be a lil more device specific and pick up a better keyboard driver, also it allows you to easily overclock it and has backlight settings which come in handy for battery life.
1) The Sense and NRG Rom seem to override the SPB interface for things like SMS and Email. The SPB interfaces for these look much better and would seem to function the way I want them to, but i can't figure out how to get them to work.
||>SPB is just something to "mask" the real phone, as soon as you want email it returns to the phone application. Click X and you get SPB back.
2) The Top Function/Task Bar is still the NRG bit and though it is graphically appealing, it doesn't seem to work quite as well as the my default TMO ROM, and doesn't seem to be necessary as part of the SPB Shell. Any ideas on that?
||>There may be a "full screen" function (don't remember).
3) the FN (Actually ALT on my device) key on the slide out keyboard is programmed differently. i learned it is swapped with the CTRL key, so it is functional but, i am wondering if there is a way to change that?
||>You can download many keyboard languages/ versions, just need to find out what phone version you have combining the right language.
Also every Rom has there own build in language/ version of keyboards.
