OK. I DID tried to search about this... I'm a noob anyway, so I'll open up a new post on. Please take it easy.
There's a way to backup/dump an installed ROM?
I mean, I want to keep a copy of it, in case I preffer to get back to the old one, instead of one of the the enhanced ROM's.
I searched at the "original roms" post, but none of them are up to date like mine (rom version 1.35....).
thanks
john
Sprite Backup lets you save all configuration and restore it later.. but saving a an Original ROM image mmm I don't know..

First, just wanted to say thanks to all that have donated their time, brains and energy for all the updates and suggestions. I think it's definitely worth a paypal donation even if it's only 10 bucks.
Second, I'm surprised (not sure why though) at the lack of using the search button. Sometimes it takes some digging but generally with enough of it, the answer is there.
Okay, now for my stupid question. (Yes, I did do a search first... )
I've made the tweaks I wanted to do and I've backed up my system. My question is, if I do a ROM upgrade and then do a restore, will the restore put my tweaks back in it or do I have to start all over?
Thanks,
Mark
PS. Obviously everyone has an opinions but on average, was it worth doing the 1.37 ROM upgrade?
what kind of backup did you do? what ROM are you flashing to?

I used Sprite backup and I've got 1.35.456.3 WWE and I was looking at the 1.37 ROM upgrade for my Diamond.
Sers,
it is good to see somebody new here who follows the rules and searches!! There's really a lack in that for the past weeks ( especially since diamond's release ) !
I dont know what tweaks you did especially, but generally registry tweaks etc. gets lost if you flash a new rom.
You could even back up your registry but I wouldn't recommend that because in case of an update there will be some changes in reg before.
If dont want to install all your apps ever again try SASHIMI - that's an customizable auto installer for apps and maybe reg-tweaks too!

I know what you mean. I read all 50 pages and if I had to read one more time where can I get this program, how do I install this, blah, blah, blah... wow, I can see how it gets frustrating for those that have a) the knowledge already b) have posted the answer 1000 times.
I understand that sometimes you just don't feel like chasing something down but for basic questions... they need to search.
As far as my mods, they're simple. I did the battery one (disableling auto-attach) and #1 on the list.
Both are easy to reinstall.
I guess my question was if I use Sprite to back up programs and then do a ROM update, using Sprite to reinstall those programs won't affect the new ROM, will it?
I'm assuming Sprite backups programs, not registry changes too.
I ask because I don't want to backup with Sprite, do the ROM update and then use Sprite and have it put the old registry back into it.
Or does Sprite copy the registry also?
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark, welcome to xda-dev,
Sprite Backup copy the registry also.
Some apps are key in the registry to operate properly.
That is why you must avoid making a restore of your old ROM on your new ROM.
yeah its not recommended.. unless you're updating to a newer version of the same ROM, provided the chef hasn't done new registry tweaks.. or your old registry will reverse the new tweaks.. SASHIMI is recommended for sure..
welcome new person
no question is silly......unless its been asked many times before.
enjoy your diamond and have fun in this forum!
Thanks guys.... I'll buy the other program instead of using sprite.
Much appreciated.
Mark
I'm pretty new to the world of windows mobile, my Diamond is the first WM device I've ever had and I must say I wish I had one earlier! (xda-dev forum is my homepage now )
Being that I'm a newbie to all this I wanted to ask a few questions so that I have this all clear in my head before I go and brick my phone :\
From what I have read, I been able to gather the following (and PLEASE correct me if this isn't the case):
-Loading a ROM on your device is essentially like 'imaging' a PC? (ala ghost or something) including the 'formatting' of the devices
-Hard resetting the device is like formatting and reinstalling the LAST loaded rom.
I also have a quick question
-Am I able to dump my current ROM so that if I don't like another ROM I can always go back to it? and if yes will this rom include the installed programs/data/etc or will I need to reinstall those after?
Sorry if these are stated in other threads, I did search but I may not have known what to look for.
Thanks!
basically yes, the rom is the image. a hard reset is more of a full reboot/retore default setting knida thing. it does not go through the format and re install process. as for dump, search a bit more on how to do that. you can find stock roms all over these forums so you don't really need to, but it can be a good decision if you need to return to the factory.
Hi Guys,
One thing I would like to know, before flashing a new ROM can I somehow save/backup my complete ROM so that I am able to restore it when I am not satisfied?
Not PIMBackup - complete ROM
Thanks,
Boris03
No save it, but if you look you will probably find the original ROM that you had on your phone somewhere around here.
But once you have used a cooked ROM, you wont want to go back .
I think he means after he has tweaked it and put his own apps on. Takes me nearly an hour and countless soft-resets to get it how i want it!
Is there a way to copy our ROMs once we have them how we want em?
Does anyone know if it is possible to take an entire backup image of your HD rom so you can later restore from it? I guess this would be like making a ROM backup from your device that you could later burn back to the device as a restore.
It's common when screwing around with theme hacks to stuff manilla and then have to go back to reburning a rom and setting it back up again. I saaw there's tools that try to backup/restore settings but it would be nice to be able to restore from a complete device state (kind of like using Ghost to backup/restore a Windows desktop image).
From my very noob knowledge I'm wondering if you can use the rom tools to do something like this (tools for cooking the roms, the RUU tools used for loading the roms on the device and HSPL/SPL/USPL, etc)...?
nope, sorry mate, there are no noob tools around for backing up.
Only things like PPCPimbackup for backing up your contacts, calendar, text messages, custom folders, and more.
You could also use SASHIMI. It can be very difficult to use it, but if you only want programs installed and your email configured automagically, then it's quite easy. Just watch the first two demonstrations on youtube.
Seriously, only play with your phone if you know how to fix a broken one. Or make sure you have enough cash to just buy a new one
thanks - all good advice. although have to say the tutorials and advice here is ample for you to experiment in an educated way. great site.
so nobody is doing entire rom backups except for the top l33ts eh? I could understand why based on the fact these are not just mini pc's...whole different ball game
cheers

Hey now that other product they do "SpriteClone" looks like it is exactly what I'm after;
http://www.spritesoftware.com/products/sprite-clone
...albeit it's $300 because it's designed for corporate/enterprise. Thanks for that link...wonder if anyone knows of a product like that designed for personal use?
SPB Backup is the best
I usually use it to restore all my files and unstalled softwares when changing the ROM
BUT
the new ROM should be of the same type as the older one, i.e., if you are on COM2 upgrading the ROM should be to a COM2 type too and so on
Thanks - SPB Backup looks like an affordable yet sturdy solution. I guess whatr you mean about matching ROM's is fine provided you are restoring to the same rom/hardware you backed up from?
I have just rooted my phone yesterday. This is the first time I have ever done this and want to make sure I do everything correctly so that i dont mess up my phone. I would like to install the MOAR rom on my phone but I guess I should back up my current ROM first? I don't really care about losing my status in any of my games or sms texts. I just want an easy way to return to a usable phone if something goes wrong while flashing MOAR (or if I dont like the MOAR rom, return to stock ROM that I am on). Does this mean I can bypass titanium backup and only backup to CWM? Also, can I use the method in this video (i9300)?
edit: apparently Im not allowed to post links but the title of the youtube video is "How to Backup and Restore ROM on Rooted Galaxy S3! "
In the video, i9300 phone is put in recovery mode (volume up+home+power keys) and then the phone goes to clockwork mod recovery. you can back up to internal or external SD card. Is the method the same with Sprint galaxy s3?
Also, I have 1.9 GB of space on my SD card. Is that enough space to back up the ROM using CWM?
One last question, If I want to install the add ons with the MOAR ROM, do I have to flash that at the same time as the ROM or could I install it after (im assuming using the same technique as flashing the ROM)?

You can use the same *process* used there. Just make sure to NEVER EVER flash a ROM, ZIP, THEME, APP, etc. that's made for the International s3 (i9300 and some other model number too)
As for the backup part, yes, you can skip Titanium Backup. TB is mainly used to restore apps/data across roms. So if you're just trying out MOAR and want to make a backup that you can revert to just in case, a backup in recovery will be enough because TB will only backup settings + data + apps and not the entire state of your system, which a Nandroid/backup from recovery will do.
Oh, and just for your own learning benefit, a backup from recovery (commonly referred to as a Nandroid), saves the EXACT state of your system. So lets say you had just finished moving a bunch of apps from one homescreen to another. The nandroid will record all this information EXACTLY because it creates a mirror image of your system as it is at the time of backup. All SMS messages will be in the same order, times, etc, all apps will be at the same version that you left it. Everything will be as if you had put your phone down and come back some hours later.
As for the tweaks, the majority of the time you can flash them whenever you please, be it right after ROM installation or two weeks after ROM installation. Pretty much the only exception is when the dev explicitly says "flash this RIGHT after flashing the ROM" or something like that. If the dev doesnt say that, you can flash the mods/tweaks whenever you please.
One last thing, next time please post Questions in the Q&A forum. Thanks

Wow, thanks for the speedy and thorough response. So, I install the tweaks exactly like the ROMS? Also, sorry about posting in the wrong section...im a noob
Haha, no problem, first-time posters tend to post questions in the General forum, or in the Development forums. Make sure you DO NOT do the latter lol (even if you have a question about a rom/mod/other thing that IS in the development sub-forum). You will get severely reprimanded by members that can be not-so-nice.
But yeah, just flash in recovery. Things that you just need to flash in recovery are generally called "flashables" or "flashable zips", and the great majority of mods are. And same exception applies here, if they dont say that it's a flashable, dont try to flash it! Sometime the "mod" will be set up in a way that you need to download it and copy/paste to the right location, just make sure you read and ask if you are unsure :good:

Thanks for moving it for me.
Another question for anyone,
I backed up my ROM on internal SD card and moved it to my computer. There is a folder in my files->clockwork mod->blobs and backup.
Can I delete both blobs and backup? or would I lose clockworkmod if I do that? thanks
Dunno about blobs, but backup is only created when you do a nandroid. Removing it will not hurt CWM.
I use TWRP, so can't comment on blobs... but I used to delete the backup folder regularly.
