I brought a nokia 6670 for approx. 320 US$ in may 2005. activated gprs from mobilink pakistan in august (i got that phone so i could surf internet and chat!)...and it's 500 pak.rupees per month for UNLIMITED gprs usage. 500rs. is about 8.5 US$.... yes... LESS THAN 10 US$ per month.
I wonder why that is so. btw, i use yahoo and msn messenger on the nokia6670. ;thinking of buying an i--mate but all confused. JAM here is for 33,000 pak rs. that's....560US$... with 128mb upgrade its about 593US$ but the guy at the shop said I can go aal the way upto 1GB which would cost 38,000 pak rs. (644US$)...
IS IT possible to use msn and yahoo messenger both on the i-mate or just msn?
also....i knw size matters and all. I like the big screen of the PDA2k but slide out keyboard seems risky... the PDA2 is available here too for 42,000 pak.rs. (711US$).. and K-JAM for about same price (711US$)....
I want something big screen and for large internet browsing so i enjoy watching pics, seeings movies, reading e-books etc. would need to stop wearing small pocket jeans though if i get the PDA2... so maybe K-JAM.
Also, whch out of these is most reliable as far as memory not getting lost and stability of system goes? no hanging/freezing etc.
Also, I use 2 SD cards with my cannon digital camera, one is 128mb and other is 256mb and i plan to use those with whichever IMATE i get. I have a 256 miniSD card with the nokia 6670. I wanna ask can I clip on the mini-sd card to it's holder and use that as a regular SD card on the Imate? I use the camera a lot for work so would love to be able to do that
Thinking of selling off the 6670 for about 200US$ and getting an i-mate in Jan.2006.. i look forward to being more active at this forum (great work admin after i do get an i-mate....JAM or K-JAM or what... :S Any advice and answers to questons above I'd be most thankful for.
sorry , one more question i forgot to ask!
Is EDGE technology dependent on the DEVICE or the service provider. I called my provider and the lady said it's regular gprs....
i'm asking coz the K-JAM has EDGE in it and the JAM doesn't...so...getting a K-JAM would mean faster browsing? not that i have a problem with the current gprs on the nokia... i even hook up the cellphone to my PC via USB when my regular cable isn't working and use the gprs... i mean, heck it's less tha 10US$ per month so it's my "backup"..
as u can see i've been doing research on all these imate models kind of stuff this last week on the internet before selling off the nokia6670 and buyng one of these

WIFI => HTC P3300 variant (MDA iii Compact)

Hi all,
Firstly, I think this is an excellent phone!
I have the T-Mobile variant (MDA compact 3) but I was gutted today when I found out that T-Mobile de-activated WIFI on it.
Apparently it can be activated ... is there any truth to this? Is there any way to get WIFI working on this phone? Are there any firmware upgrades or similar available?
Thanks alot,
Porac69
It is an excellent device, if you need/ want WiFi send it back and get an Orbit from O2 or buy a HTC Artemis P3300. The MDA-CIII does NOT have WiFi on board and cannot be activated, the O2 Orbit and OEM HTC units both have WiFi and work.
As a tip posting the same question four times in the forums will only get you the same answer four times, it won't work - Mike
thanks for your reply.
I posted it four times becuase not everyone reads the same section of the forums and the sections I posted them in are all relevant to this subject.
Why no wifi???
Yesterday I was seriously considering a flext contract and selecting the Compact III as my phone. Until I read this thread and discovered no wifi.
Wonder why they exclude wifi?

O2 don't seem to be worried about people making calls via skype using their Orbit. You make a good point actually. T-mobile have popular web & walk tariffs and offering wifi on the Artemis could possibly affect that side of the business.
Shame really....much prefer a T-mobile tariff rather than O2. On a related note......anybody know if Orange will be offering this? I know the Trinity (spv m700) will have gps too so perhaps they won't want an overlap with 2 models.
It is probably true, that T-Mobile wants to push their Web'n'Walk Technology, but on the other hand disabling WiFi seems rather unlogical if your company is the biggest HotSpot Provider in Germany. Maybe they just want to push the selling of "Higher" and more expensive T-Mobile MDAs, like the Vario II. This company politics just don't make sense to me...I can live very well without WiFi, but it would be nice having it sometimes.

Are T-Mobile lying to me?

I am about to purchase the XDA Orbit or Orange M700 or the T-Mobile MDA Compact iii. I am trying to get the best deal...Is there anyway to switch on the MDA'S WLAN?
Orange- Phone FREE. £35/[email protected] months. 200 Mins & 300 txts PLUS unlimited weekend texts. No satnav software and the WLAN is there!!
02- (Who I am with now tried to better orange's offer) Phone FREE. £30/[email protected] 18 months!! 400 mins & 750 texta. No satnav software and the wireless lans there.
T-Mobile - (They know both Orange's & 02's offer but didnt make an offer) Web and walk flext. £37.50/[email protected] 18 months (With the option to cancel the web and walk at anytime as well as downgrade to a cheaper contract after 6 months) £180 allowence on my account per a month, plus 1GB of internet access (They say unlimited but thats a lie due to fair use policy etc etc) No satnav software or Wireless Lan (The guy said a firmware update is comming which will switch it on!??)
HELP ME PLEASSEE!
Why you're boring us with questions to WLAN on MDAcIII?
There are thousends and thousands of threads concerning this question.
For what its worth, from a MDA III owner go with the XDA Orbit.
The spv m700 is HTC Trinity. Orange sell the Artemis as spv m650 but is it available in the UK?
As for the wifi on the MDA III.....do not think it will take a simple update to switch it on. I believe the hardware is simply not there to begin with. Why would T-mobile say an update is coming which will activate the wifi ?! Looks like they are offering flext 35 + web n walk. Personally, hate to be locked in an 18 month contract with any provider. I am on flext 35 with a 12 month plan, my monthly allowance is only £120.
The lack of wifi is not too bad if you have web n walk. Yes there is a fair usage policy, it is still best gprs tariff in the UK. They don't like you using msn, skype etc.
You will have it all with the Orbit. Gps, Wifi, bluetooth and phone!
The T-Mobile devise does not contain the WiFi hardware so if T-Mobile told you a firmware update will switch it on he is lying - there is NOTHING THERE to be switched on!
I have the T-Mob unit and with the Web-n-Walk I can use the internet without a problem, you would have to be online nearly 24/7 to use up your 1GB per month (and there is another tarrif for 3GB per month IIRC).
I also have the HTC P3300 Artemis which does have WiFi, but unless the connection is free I tend to use the T-Mob unit. If WiFi is so important to you get the O2 Orbit or buy a P3300 unit, they are available from some suppliers tied to contracts which is a cheaper way to purchase it.
For me the clincher for the HTC P3300 Artemis was the abscence of the crappy O2 Active Interface software that can mess up otherwise perfectly usable good hardware, the HTC unit is to all intents and purposes the same as the Orbit, minus the XDA logo and its a nicer colour IMHO - Mike
You can always get the HTC P3300 and then go with any provider you want so you are not stuck with their built in bs.
One thing to watch out for is the possible difference in screens between the orange and o2 versions? I had the Orange M600 and was very happy with it unitl I put it beside an iMate Jamin - the Jamin's screen was much whiter and brighter even at lower backlight settings.
I now have the Orbit and the screen is also very bright white. However, I have not compared it to the Orange version but it may be worth doing so...
I don't regret the MDA CIII one bit, my previous Universal had wi-fi and in my usage habits, I never got to turn it on once, I wasn't hunting out hotspots, I wanted data on demand, and via O2 that was quite pricey.
So T-Mobile does not have wi-fi on their Artemis based device, instead they have GPRS bundles that can't even be closely matched by the other networks.
When making the choice, you need to ask yourself how you will use it. Sure if most of your data use is around Wi-Fi hotspots, then the MDA compact III is not for you, but if like me and you need data in a clients house, at a meeting or in the middle of a field then Web and Walk is your friend.
If only it was at 3.5g speeds!!!
All I wanted was a T-Mobile sim for cheaper GPRS when I switched provider (O2 really need to sort out their prices). In the shop I was offered the C-III for free so I took it!
Put the T-Mob sim in the Universal and enjoy the 3G speed (if you still have the device) - it simply flys along well worth trying, but my Uni is a brick in comparison to the Artemis devices - Mike

Brasilian settings

Anyone can tell me what the Brasilian settings for data have to be?
I intend to travel whitin 3 weeks to Brasil and want to add a local sim in my Trinity but wants to use the GPRS or UMTS (when availeble) aswell I don't mind about which operator cause I didn't bought the sim yet.
Thanks in advance
Willem
The Data Settings are different for each operator. so Search first an operator and then have a look ont his internet site which DataSettings you have to define... You must go allways over a Provider authentication for gprs and there the most are with a password protected...
It's also important to have a look wheter provider is most cheap for your needs.... Calling outside country or only localy or what ever else... like mms, sms, data...

Williem, try this... I've been there for two years and my operator there was TIM... Pretty good for call but no EDGE, no UMTS, no low cost packages for connections...
Thanks
Thanks a lot
My idea was already to get a Tim chip, I don't now is it a long time ago that you where there, cause I have been there 2,5 year ago to do a trip at the Amazones and in that time I had al the time free dataconnection whit my M1000 Orange phone I bought in that time a Tim prepaid chip and could get straight away acces, last january I was in south Brasil with a Wizzard and could't get acces to the dataconnection at all neighter with my Dutch chip or whit a Brasilian chip.
I think 2 years ago it was still in trail and in January there was a full operational comercial connection.
I am realy curious about the prices which you paid for your data package there.
Regards
Willem
Williem, I stayed from August 2005 until end of March 2007 in a city close to Sao Paulo (Sao Jose dos Campos) and there was no problem for the GPRS connection. At that time there was an interesting option but only for the WAP trafic. Since when you connect our jewel to surf internet, is like a normal modem, they do not consider as a wap or mobile connection... My personal experience for maybe 2Mb payed 270R$ (or something like) = approx 100€ ... Then no more connections
This was in last december, maybe now there is something new...
You can try to look at here: http://www.timcelular.com.br/
The international calls, compared with our italian fares, is very cheap: with Voda chip, is 3€xmin, with a local TIM chip was 2R$ x min (0,75 - 0,80€)
The settings here attached are tested in a Qtek S100, Qtek S200 and with the P3600.
Some time the MMS connection is not available, but is not a setting problem, is an operator issue with their network expansion program...
Um abraço !!!
Just to inform that...at least in São Paulo, TIM has EDGE.
I live in Brazil and I can confirm you that we don't have UMTS. But there's EDGE at least in all the capitals. I can confirm you that data accesses are still expensive, specially if you have a pre-paid phone.
If you have furthet questions, feel free to contact me.

help with apn settings abroad

Hi there,
a friend of mine is in UK for the weekend. He's got an italian 3 sim and with the contract he has it would be brilliant if he could use 3uk for data connection here in UK for the time being ( as far as I know his contract lets him use internet abroad for a good price IF he is on 3uk and any 3uk partner ).
We noticed though that sometimes the mobile ( an up to date froyo ) swithces between apn(s).
Problem is that, when he is on 3UK it's good to browse the web, but when he is on vodafone/tmobile/o2 that is far too expensive.
Is there a way to stick onto an apn and make it the primary? This way he will either browse with 3uk ( when there is connection available for 3 ) or do not browse the web ( but at least he does not spend money ).
Thanks in advance.
Tommy
