if buying a blue angel in the UK, which version is the one to shoot for?
looks aside, (O2 looks better in black) which provider offers good tech support + software support over the others?
I hear O2 getting slagged on a regular basis when it comes to component replacements for example, particularly where whistling screen faults are concerned. does t-mobile or orange win out here?
I know the O2 asis rom is supposed to be quite nice but are people finding MDA III from tmobile or M2000 orange more reliable out of the box for example. are tmobile slow at software releases, are orange, who's tend to be better?
I've decided on a blue angel over a IIi but nothing hurts to poll for a bit of opinion and see which Blue Angel has advantages over other types. I've read the wiki and while I found upgrading my XDA 1 and cooking rom's for it doable, I don't feel confident thus far at repeating the feat on the Blue angel so am looking at an off the shelf blue one for now.
can people give me a precis of their experience here that allows me to make an informed choice.
thanks
I've always found Orange to be the best provider, last time I was with them they actually have people at the other end of the telephone who want to help. They also didn't charge you for calling customer services (which I just found out T-Mobile do. Cheeky bastards).
I'd avoid O2 if possible, but I think all mobile phone operators suck, so I'd get it from whoever has the cheapest handset/plan for you.
Upgrading the ROM means all the phones are the same.
Chris
I've had XDA and XDAII from O2 and CS was OK when you actually spoke to someone who knew anything about the XDA models. Billing was an absolute nightmare though!
I've had MDAIII from T-Mobile since last October. Customer services are very helpful (and Free). CS have spent hours on the phone with me when I've been trying to sort out problems with unsupported upgrades from the internet and have even phoned me back on a landline so we could tinker with the MDAIII and talk at the same time.
The device is very stable out of the box. Only upgrade so far has included the Blackberry client which I use constantly and it only costs £10/month for 50mb of data. They have crappy GPRS tariffs though.
I've got Orange C500 and never had any problems with CS, but then I've never really had any problems with the C500.
I think Orange is the best provider, the support is excellent, plus if you look at the orange developer site you can see whats happening.
But I bought the O2 XDA IIs (for the black) and unlocked it. I now run the i-mate 1.40 ROM on it, with the O2 Plus add-on.
Can someone tell me if the T-Mobile MDA Compact III is wi-fi.
I notice from other forums which state that this version is not wi-fi enabled
Shouldn't be too difficult to edit the registry settings.
Buzz, Maimach We need you, Help !!!
Doesn't look like it, it isn't mentioned in the manual.

The HTC p3300 has Wi-Fi standard onboard. Local telecom providers however, are able to choose if they want features like Wi-Fi enabled or disabled. T-mobile Germany decided to sell the MDA Compact III with WiFi disabled (maybe to boost the GPRS usage?). T-mobile The Netherlands decided to let the Wi-Fi feature enabled.
I have a dutch T-mobile MDA Compact III, Model nr. ARTE110, that has WiFi enabled. Bought it btw for EUR 209,- + 15,75 monthly fee, which makes EUR 398,- in total .
Maybe the WiFi feature can be enabled/disabled by tweaking the registry or using another ROM?
And does anyone have suggestions how to unlock it?
hi rjs_artemis,
can you give a link to a website where you bought it? is this offer also available for non netherlands residents? I am living in Belgium so that I might go to Maastricht and check that wisely
Greets
EDIT: Btw is the t-mobile in the neths in Dutch or English? regards
EDIT2: is it locked on t-mobile or unlocked?

I bought it at the T-mobile Online Shop, see here
other option is http://www.smartphonestunts.nl/index.php?tid=181
And yes it has a Dutch WM5 and it is locked.
As mentionned on the following link https://www.t-mobile.nl/persoonlijk...ab=Relax&ratePlanId=269&contractPeriodId=1030
the price of the phone shall be 239.95€ with a 15.75€ flex t-mobile abonnement and not 209,- like you mentionned. Therefore the total price reaches 428.95€ and not 398,-, reason why I asked you where you bought it.
Anyway price is still attractive but if you tell me the device is locked on t-mob neth, it doesn't worth one penny for my own.
Regards
btw for the old fellahs in here, do you know if pdaphones might be phisically unlocked like mobiles? I think it could be done but need confo
would be a nice opportunity then
T-Mobile MDA III
I had a reply from T-Mobile UK yesterday saying the UK release will not have Wifi.
However I read that the Wifi is all on board on the main Chip
Texas Instruments OMAP 850
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=cpu&id=a850
If thats the case then would another ROM not re-enable it?
Or do you recon it's a custom Hardware?
I'd like to stay with T-Mobile for Web'n'Walk but If i cant have the Wifi I'll go elsewhere
O2 I think is due to release the Orbit 27th Nov.
Might wait for that as I assume the package will be better that the ones Expansys is offering on O2 or vodafone with an HTC branded unit.

We are both right. T-mobile raised their prices for the MDA Compact III at the Online Shop. I ordered it last friday (03-11) for 209,-. On tuesday they raised prices with 30,95, so now it's 239,95 with a 15,75 contract.
Unlocking will be possible very soon. For example see this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-282156.html
aye sounds promising
I'll wait before buying until I have some confo about that..
still the question of keef related to the wifi is really interesting... if any has made some tests on an uk or dutch t-mobile version..
T-Mobile Mda Compact 3
Ref Wi-Fi embedded in chip !!
Hi Guys
I have tried to perform a rom update on my Mda Compact 3 using the HTC P3300 latest rom but the compact was having none of it.
It appears to 'drop out' after 3 per cent stating 'incorrect device'.
This is not the usual "incorrect vendor id" so I guess updating with a wi-fi enabled rom is not possible
Why have T-Mobile skimped on this essential feature is beyond me !!!

Quote from that link
"All-rounder
The MDA Compact III is a fantastic all-rounder. It’s a dedicated navigation PDA with GPS and TomTom Navigator 6 software preinstalled. It runs on the powerful Windows 5.0 operating system. The Compact III is very user friendly as it has a mouse. Control the cursor with the miniature trackball and use its silver dial as a scroll wheel. Keeping up with your emails is simple and you can surf the internet with web‘n’walk. It has128 MB of internal memory and a microSD card slot for expansion, plus a two mega-pixel digital camera with zoom, flash LED and video capture, an MP3 player, FM radio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB cable connectivity."
Hi all,
Firstly, I think this is an excellent phone!
I have the T-Mobile variant (MDA compact 3) but I was gutted today when I found out that T-Mobile de-activated WIFI on it.
Apparently it can be activated ... is there any truth to this? Is there any way to get WIFI working on this phone? Are there any firmware upgrades or similar available?
Thanks alot,
Porac69
It is an excellent device, if you need/ want WiFi send it back and get an Orbit from O2 or buy a HTC Artemis P3300. The MDA-CIII does NOT have WiFi on board and cannot be activated, the O2 Orbit and OEM HTC units both have WiFi and work.
As a tip posting the same question four times in the forums will only get you the same answer four times, it won't work - Mike
thanks for your reply.
I posted it four times becuase not everyone reads the same section of the forums and the sections I posted them in are all relevant to this subject.
Why no wifi???
Yesterday I was seriously considering a flext contract and selecting the Compact III as my phone. Until I read this thread and discovered no wifi.
Wonder why they exclude wifi?

O2 don't seem to be worried about people making calls via skype using their Orbit. You make a good point actually. T-mobile have popular web & walk tariffs and offering wifi on the Artemis could possibly affect that side of the business.
Shame really....much prefer a T-mobile tariff rather than O2. On a related note......anybody know if Orange will be offering this? I know the Trinity (spv m700) will have gps too so perhaps they won't want an overlap with 2 models.
It is probably true, that T-Mobile wants to push their Web'n'Walk Technology, but on the other hand disabling WiFi seems rather unlogical if your company is the biggest HotSpot Provider in Germany. Maybe they just want to push the selling of "Higher" and more expensive T-Mobile MDAs, like the Vario II. This company politics just don't make sense to me...I can live very well without WiFi, but it would be nice having it sometimes.
Hi I am due an upgrade from O2 and I ama a .net developer by trade and would like to be able to develop for the new choice of XDA I am due to make.
I currently have and XDAIIi runing PPC2003SE and have been looking at the XDA Orbit as it has GPS and is a very nice device. My concern is that when I purchased my XDAIIi I had been waiting for the Exec but O2 kept putting it off and I changed and then 4-6 weeks later the Exec came out so I missed out on Mobile 5 and developing against .Net 2 for it.
My concern now is that with Mobile 6 being out that the Orbit is not a WM6 device and previously there has been no official way of porting my XDAIIi on to WM5. Am I going to be in the same situation with the Orbit? Have O2 mentioned an upgrade to WM6? Would it be available to new customers only, i.e. on phones offered after the upgrade released, or if I were to upgrade now would I be elligible for any potential upgrade? Tempted to wait a little longer...
Anyone have any knowledge/advice on this?
Thanks
Andrew

I work for o2 and have asked but have heard nothing, I am going to go with no for free upgrades to WM6 as o2 have never done free system upgrades, I also read somewhere that HTC have indicated they will not be giving free OS upgrades to existing customers, one will have to buy new devices if we want the new OS
Hi thanks for the replies, guess I'll just sit tight a bit longer and see how things pan out.
hi amino: i have heard that O2 are offering unlimited data tariff's for £10 pcm, is this true? I have spoken to CS and they don't know.
no...at least not to my knowledge ! o2 is the worst offering for Data, atm there is a huge internal thread on the work forum on how bad it is and how we all feel that o2 needs to pull their finger out and look at what they are doing data wise as its exceptionally poor

Don't count on any CS
If you want unlimited data (well... almost) go for T-Mobile Web'n'Walk tarrif. I know most ppl complain about lack of WiFi in the MDA C3 but having it with (1GB/mnth) internet I don't need to look for any WiFi spots. So far the best deal I have ever made on any tarrif/phone.
(I don't work for them )

yep i totally agree with Adigital. Was one of the main reason why i went for MDA C3 rather than wait for the O2 Orbit. WiFi wasnt a big need for me. 1Gb is more than enough for me checking email, browse websites will on bus/train to uni and even go on msn. sometimes i leave it on for a good few hours, and doesnt really take up much data. i would def recommend the T-Mobile data package Web'n'Walk for anyone who wants to check email on the go almost any where at any time!
hi guys is it possible to activate/ add wifi to tmobile mda3. shame it does not come with one.
NO as the hardware isn't fitted, if you want WiFi go and get an XDA Orbit or HTC Artemis P3300 which is suitably equipped, T-Mobile dropped the functionalty to force you to use the GPRS internet connection (at a cost) - Mike
except for t-mo nl as i remember, they have wifi hw. btw next time use search button, there are at least 3 threads about this
Correct the Dutch units do have WiFi but the UK ones do not. As for only three threads on this topic, someone must havebeen deleting them as I can remember at least thirty - Mike
