Hi, i have a simple chat style sms application i am using on my T-Mobile SDA and i would like to port it to T-Mobile DASH. What should be the Form size so that it would fit the DASH screen?
The screen on a Dash is 320x240 pixels large, and after the browser steals viewing space the user gets about 300x220ish or so in usable space. If you need to do specific testing simply PM me and I would be more than willing to help out and give screen shots on how things look. If you wish to work independently you might want to look into the Microsoft emulators which have been made by Microsoft so people can emulate smart phone devices for testing programs and sites for this exact purpose.
thanks for the quick reply I will try to create blank form and PM you ASAP. I have just bought my excalibur online and havent received it yet so i cant test it on an actual unit.
Is this app a 'replacement' for the messaging account in outlook? Or will the messages continue to go to the existing inbox. Also, is MMS supported? I have waited so long for an app as good as the Palm Messaging beta, created specifically for a smartphone.
Orientation Aware Control
Hey oldsap,
I'm a mobile developer by trade and if you're looking for a flexible way to handle resolutions etc to make you're app a little more portable, take a look at the Orientation Aware Control that microsoft's patterns and practices group created:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa480471.aspx
It can be downloaded from codeplex. Basically, you create a single form and it uses a resource file to store settings for various resolutions (control layout etc). No more need to make multiple copies of a form for each resolution you want to support. Good luck, hope that helps!

for the time being, ive created this to intercept all incoming sms so that they wont go to the inbox. But i can re-code it so that when a new sms arrives:
1. sms wont go to the existing inbox
2. sms will go to both the application AND inbox
it's not a perfect chat style application but it works well for me.
im still waiting for my DASH to arrive (ordered it from ebay) When i have ported it to DASH, ill post it here

Thanks for the tip sir. I'll read about this. Im just a newbie programmer and can only create very very simple applications
I would have to say that a threaded SMS app is not simple!

i refer to my application as "simple" compared to PALM's threaded sms because it only uses Textbox instead of XML. It doesnt use colored fonts to distinguish sent and received sms. But it does have other features like save chat window, group sending, sms sent counter, sms filtering, etc
Hey everyone I'm sort of doing a review of all the messenger clients that are available for use on a PDA.
If you guys know of any other good messenger clients please let me know.
Below are all the messenger clients I have tested:
AIM 2.0 Hacked
Pros: Free, Customizable away message, smiley's, change font color size etc ,
Can view actual AIM profiles, view your buddy list as you would on the PC.
Cons: No notifications, can't send/receive files, only for AIM,
Landscape mode is buggy, can't see mobile devices, On-screen keyboard
takes up screen so you cant see what your typing, no tabbed messaging, no VOIP/PTT.
Agile Messenger
Pros: Send/Recieve files pictures videos etc , VOIP, PTT , smiley's, multiple
messenger clients, tabbed messaging, notifications, auto reconnect.
Cons: Not very customizable (font size, color, away message etc.) , can not
view profiles or away messages, can not see mobile devices, have to pay for
services.
IM+
Pros: Multiple messenger clients, tabbed messaging, notifications, auto
reconnect, customizable away message, smiley's.
Cons: Can only view partial part of the away message, not very customizable
(font size, color, etc.) , can not view profiles, away messages
are buggy and get mixed up with users showing the same away for two
different users, can not send/recieve files pictures videos etc , no VOIP, no
PTT, not free.
Palringo
Pros: Free, Multiple messenger, view away messages, tabbed messaging, auto
reconnect, smiley's, send receive files, VOIP, PTT, notifications.
Cons: Need to register on their website, cant view profiles, not very
customizable (font size, color, etc.)
Slick IM
Pros: Free, Multiple messenger, view away messages, tabbed messaging, auto
reconnect.
Cons: Ugly looking, still in pre-alpha version, cant view profiles, not that
customizable.
------------------------------
In conclusion all these messengers have their ups and downs, and their is not
one messenger that does it all.
Personally I use IM+ or AIM 2.0, since I only use AIM.
IMO Agile messenger is the best out of all of them, but it doesn't do
everything I need it to do. They should of at least made it more customizable
and be able to read away messages, profiles, and a customizable away
message. I dont really mind if you cant change your font color and size.
Once again if anyone knows of any other messengers that are worth trying
and are good please let me know!
Thanks
Nice review but it would seem more viable to me if you stated what you need for each to connect . example .... wifi / edge/gprs / data plan ...
Are there any ways that we can use our PDA to make free phone calls? Skype needs to pay.

Hi:
All the reviews and posts on messengers seem to be a little bit old. Just wondering if there have been any improvements to any of the programs? Any new opinions on which is best?
I am currently trying Palringo, which looks great, but doesn't seem to have smilies, and disconnects when a call is placed or received.
I don't mind paying for a program if the interface looks great, and includes smilies. and remains connected even when a call is placed.
The ones I have read a little about are Agile, IM+, Octro, Mundu, and Beejive.
At least in the screenshots the interfaces don't seem as nice as the one for Palringo. i like that Palringo shows each person's messages in alternating colors. I may just think it looks better because I have seen it in person rather than screenshot though, so opinions would really be appreciated, so I don't have to try all of them, lol.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
EDIT: I probably shouldn't have said the psots I found were old, just that none are VERY recent, and programs receive updates, in some cases, frequently. So a month or 2 ago, could mean the programs may be different now, or people may have changes their opinions.

Well I dont have a data plan and to the best of my knowledge OZ is still number 1 in my usage. Yes as with most programs it has its hangups but in the overall it works fine . I can even chat with it while on a phone call ...
Ok folks ... The hottest messenger is out ... Well to my wants and needs it has them all. This program also allows you to join chat-rooms while on your cellphone . So this is no longer a feature that was solely controlled by danger which is what the t-mobile sidekick uses.
So people be happy after hours and days of looking and trying over 100 programs with different versions I am happy to say " MunduIM " is here ....

Yes, im comparing to the iphone again, but after years of using WM, im sick of the dreadful email client. Viewing/downloading attachments is a nightmare,, and as for HTML mail.. forget it! I hate that tap to scroll right / tap to enable Internet Pictures bollocks.
Is there a better email client or a hack to disable "tap to enable scroll right" at least? Especially considering how we have huge WVGA screens, the iphone client puts WM to shame.
You've got a point there! There must be a registry key somewhere that enables the scrolling to the right by default?
I've found on mine too that when I do swipe my finger to scroll left and right in emails it goes all the way to the right, what I mean is I can't read what's in the middle of the email without using the scroll bar.
Ya get me?
Try Flex Mail (v4 for the moment).
I would also like to see a iPhone kinda client for my Touch HD but nothing so far.
Hi,
I've tried FlexMail but it worked quite slow for me.
I put it on the SD card (this might have been a reason)
Cheers

what is this ?
FlexMail seems to be "too fat" for me.
Looking for something leaner
cheers
The worst thing is that none of them support imap for yahoo
I found ProfiMail 3.
The UI is far from perfect but you can apply rules to the incoming emails.
It worked with my Exchange via IMAP.
cheers
the problem broadens if you think that poutlook is also responsible of sms/mms too
i fear we'll have to wait for microsoft to release a decent messaging system, and god knows when it will be available... maybe with win7?

And if Microsoft reads this forum ...
please make the next e-mail client with full S/MIME support. Not just for Exchange. It's a shame not to be able to ecrypt mails with personal PKI certificates useing IMAP.
In general I even tried to find a decent JAVA (J2ME) based e-mail client but ... nothing so far
Agreed - e-mail client is pretty rubbish. I could live with it better if you could always enable pictures/right scrolling which are just a damned nuisance..
i'm sure MS reads this forum and finds it useless
and/or disregards hints just for principle
Is this at all possible? I still want to have my contacts, etc updated but I feel the interface is somewhat primitive!
Replace with what?
An alternative ...
K9 Mail maybe or better ...
You can't "replace" it you just start using something else.
Are there even Amy advantages to using the gmail app?
Any suggestions on alternatives? K9 Any good?
Ah gmail will be the best gmail tool you will find on the android lol. You don't mean Email tool? Do you use Gmail??
Yeah I maent the GMail application (it refers to itself as "Google Mail"). I'll just have to bear with it then till they upgrade it . I am though over the moon with the device the text input ROCKS! I do have a list of applications I need suggestions on though ... I'm used to the following on Windows Phoen so I need an Android variation ...
G-Alarm - A Comprehensive alarm application
G-Profile - easily change my profiles from night, work, home, etc, this would be great as a widget
Task Facade - A general task manager that will show all my running applications and let me close/switch
Wake On Text/Email/etc - As it says ... and stay awake until message has been read!
Lock Without using Power button - easy ...
That's about it for now

I know what you mean about the GMail app, if it's the same as in Android 1.6.. Ugly, flat and boring interface. Some customisation or nice animation wouldn't go amiss. I think the problem is that the Android team at Google don't really view the product UI as a whole, but instead as a load of separate modules that they can just chuck together. No time to make the GMail app look nicer for 2.1? No worries, just stick it out as it is. Media player still the worst/most basic there is? We'll worry about it another time, just stick it in, as is.
Depending on what you've come from, Android can seem amazing, or quite basic in it's vanilla form. I realise the intention is for manufacturers to add their own custom touches to the OS, like HTC have with Sense, and Motorola have with MOTOBlur. But really I think Google should be applying a bit more spit and polish to it's own core apps - the ones that come installed on all/most Android phones, and won't be messed with by handset manufacturers.
By this I mean GMail, Maps, Market, Browser, Gallery etc. Some of these are pretty good efforts (Browser), while others leave a lot to be desired compared to those found on other types of (non-Android) handsets.
I realise that they have to code for the lowest common denominator (low-end handsets) and not every handset can have a 1ghz Snapdragon in it, but I also feel that they are failing Android a little bit, by not ensuring the the latest hardware is taken advantage of in it's latest OS.
How hard would it be to tart up the GMail interface a little bit, while still keeping the same functionality? Not hard.
I know Android is about power and flexibility - don't like the Google way, then design or just install some other developers app instead. And that's great, but I really think there's something to be said for making sure your core experience is great, not just ok.
Disclaimer: I am basing this opinion on my experiences of Android 1.1, 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0 (2.0 admittedly is limited, since I do not own my own phone with Eclair yet, just flashed custom ROMs).
Feel free to flame away - I may flame myself when my Desire turns up by 1pm today, and I realise I'm tallking a load of BS when I'm presented the all singing, all dancing, beautifully animated new 2.1 apps from Google! But I doubt it...
BTW, don't get me wrong - I love Android, and I would not consider buying any other type of phone!
Why use the gmail application? I'm using the native email application and it works fine with gmail, lets me move all my mail to archive etc, receives it when its received (through push i think) and there is no reason why i would wantto use the local gmail application. In fact. It hasnt even been loaded up. lol
So I don't actually "have" to use th GMail application? I can just add the GMail account on Exchange/ActiveSync on the mail application? Sounds like a good idea! What are the disadvantages?
Any advice on the other applications I wanted?

Go in the Gmail application, settings, disable notifications.
You've pretty much turned off the Gmail Applcation then. Start using the other mail application or download one off the marketl.
I will give you some suggestions for your apps when I have time.

THANKS! I was kind of pissed when I notced you couldn't send bbc emails with GMail app ... madness ...
Is there a way to have a Gmail, Google Apps and Exchange all on the same device? Also does the mail app use IMAP idle I don't want to drain the battery by checking mail every minute ...
What uses more battery, gmail app or using HTC Mail to check for messages every half an hour?
Likely mail as GMail is push.

My bad ...
Still, I have a list of applications that I need asap .
So far, I've not found anything that even comes close to Galarm in terms of quality. I'm using Gentle Alarm though, which is really good compared to most other alarm apps for android.
Check out a program called Locale. That's meant to be really good for profiles and even does it location based
EDIT: Don't use a task manager, it's not good for your phone! There's an article that was posted up on here about the way android works, you don't need to kill tasks and reboot, etc. like you did with WinMo.

Fair does but how do I see the apps running in the background or what's an easy way to switch between apps?
I've heard of this "locale" before, seems to be very popular!
hold the Home button and it brings up a little task switcher, similar to Alt+Tab on a PC
Thank you! Goodbye, Advanced Task Killer!
Hey everyone, I'm new to Android and just looking to get situated with everything.
I use Gmail for my email and I've found the stock Gmail app to be ALMOST exactly what I need. Major flaws are zooming in and out and selecting text are impossible and it really annoys me.
Basically the features I want are:
Push or IMAP, I like the delivery speed of the Gmail App
Label support, or if folders are used then the ability to Star/Flag/COPY to folders instead of just moving
Zooming out for viewing large emails
It would be nice to have a unified inbox, but not a big deal for me
I'm pretty disappointed with the Gmail app missing some of these key usability features. Is the HTC mail program better in any way? Are there any other options that work well?
Thanks.
Pretty sure the GMail app has label support. You can star and label things as is since "folders" are just labels in GMail anyways. Push for GMail is a FroYo feature, afaik. Looking forward to that instead of having an active connection for my GMail.
Zooming out would be nice but on the Evo's screen it doesn't seem like it would be really needed unless you have people e-mailing you that don't know how to press the enter key every now and then. I haven't tried zooming in/out in the HTC e-mail app but I doubt it's present there. Seems like a low priority feature, imo.
The non-GMail e-mail program is pretty good. Supports POP, IMAP and Exchange ActiveSync. Unified Inbox, no. Personally, I dislike a unified inbox as I like to know who is sending me stuff where and with what address I should be replying with. I've yet to setup folders and such but I expect you can since folders are a pretty basic function for e-mail. I know the Exchange ActiveSync will sync folders, contacts, and calendar so you probably can.

Yea, the Gmail app does have Labels, which are essentially folders.
The Gmail app is perfect IMHO except zooming and selecting text. The zooming is an issue for emails I get that are HTML formatted. Like Gamestop or Best Buy, etc... They usually have big headers and text with padding on the left. This makes the text all out of my view. The only way to read then is to turn my phone sideways and/or scroll left to right as I read... A little anoying. I noticed this issue in the HTC mail program too.
I also noticed today that I can't select text or copy it from emails in the Gmail application. I'm not sure if this is an issue in other clients as well or what.
not to thread jack by any means, but this seems relevant to my question, somewhat. does anyone know how to (when you have multiple accounts linked) have it send from a specific account or am i limited to the one i have synced with my phone?
thanks and i hope you get your problems resolved, i wish i could select text too, its a bit annoying that that feature isnt there.
Gmail app works perfectly for my purposes but you are right that it doesn't have zoom or the ability to cut and paste. If you come across an email where you need either of these two, just open up your browser and go to Gmail from there. Both of those functions work perfectly on the mobile gmail site.
Yea, that's what I've been doing. Just a little tedious considering they are pretty basic features. Not really dealbreakers for me though.
Might I suggest K-9 mail, it's and open source solution that has imap/pop support and integrates seamlessly.

Oh I agree. I am all for decreasing keystrokes/screen presses. That's the reason I have Camcorder and Camera on my home screen. I should only need one but if I'm in a hurry to capture something, the fact that it takes an extra three screen presses to switch between video/still means that I might miss it.
I think it's quite likely that Gmail will be updated to include those basic features in the near future.
