I was just wondering if running Android on our devices change the IMEI (I'm guessing not but I just wanted to make sure). I ask this because I have no data plan on my AT&T HTC Fuze, and I don't want to be slapped with a data plan because it looks like I changed devices. I compared the IMEI in Android and Windows Mobile, and saw no difference in number, but when I plugged in my device to my computer it registered as an HTC Dream (I assume this because we are using drivers from the Dream?).
This is my first time running Android on my device, runs pretty smooth, but I'm a bit hesistant to run it again until I can verify this information. The build I tried is [prj][XDANDROID][2.2][AOSP][18.7.10]RC1 RELEASED . Runs very nicely, just as fast as Windows Mobile does natively for me.
Thanks!
Just thought of a couple more questions. I was wondering, is there anyway to switch between Windows Mobile and Android smoothly? I'm fine with launching Haret from File Explorer, but how do I get back to Windows Mobile without using my stylus to soft reset. Shutting down isn't a option, I tihnk the build I'm using has a problem with that so far (just crashes when shutting down.).
I honestly don't think you have to worry about it, I don't think Android would be able to (have access to) change that value...
From wikipedia:
Unlike the Electronic Serial Number or MEID of CDMA and other wireless networks, the IMEI is only used for identifying the device, and has no permanent or semi-permanent relation to the subscriber. Instead, the subscriber is identified by transmission of an IMSI number, which is stored on a SIM card that can (in theory) be transferred to any handset. However, many network and security features are enabled by knowing the current device being used by a subscriber.

Alright, that's what I was thinking, but I thought because there were so many rules against the discussion of how to spoof your IMEI that it might be possible that this might spoof the IMEI some how. But seeing how the IMEI is the same in Android as it is in Windows Mobile, and I haven't been hit with a "You have a smartphone here's your data plan" text message, I guess I'm safe. Thanks!

I have been told by an AT&T support engineer that they are gradually going through their database and matching up IMEI's, IMSI's, and plans to ensure that everyone has a SIM and plan that matches up with their device. I don't know if they are doing this methodically, or on a case-by-case bases as people call for support or purchase new plans/devices. But there is a chance they will discover that you have a PDA without a PDA data plan at some point.
I kept my original Cingular SIM and kept putting it into new phones for years rather than using the new SIMs that AT&T sent me with new phones. I never had an issue until the purchasing department (who manages the cell phone plans, etc for my work) disabled text messaging for everyone in the company (mine was one that was not supposed to be disabled). When I called purchasing to get it fixed, texting starting working again, but in the process all my data died. Then I called about that and ended up talking directly to an AT&T support engineer. He "couldn't enable data" for me because I had an "incompatible SIM." Never mind the fact that it had been working fine before. I guess they realized that the IMSI on my SIM was from an old device that was never compatible with data when it was purchased, (but it was not blocked from data either). I ended up having to put a newer SIM in my phone to get my data working again. I think in the end, the old SIM was using the older Cingular APN information (which still worked) rather than the newer AT&T/Cingular APN information. I think they blocked my data by disallowing my device (SIM) to connect to the older APN.

Thanks for the outlook, but I believe I'm fine. I talked to several different AT&T reps, and because I got my smartphone before Nov 6th I believe (when they first started making them mandatory) I was grandfathered in, and do not have to get a data plan, unless I upgrade to a new device, or change my device pretty much. So I'm stuck with this phone until I'm ready for a data plan. I've talked to the reps before and after the plans started coming into affect. If you've never had a data plan before, you don't have to get one on your current device, just upgrading will force you too. If you warranty, that's a gray area, I've heard you can call and let them know it's a warranty, and it should be fine they'll take it off, but I've heard stories where the reps just say they can't do anything.
Hello. I am wondering if someone here might be able to clear something up for me. I bought a new EVO 4G off eBay a few days ago. I called Sprint to verify the ESN is clean.
The thing is, I don't have any intention to activate this phone, rather I bought it as a toy, and because upon coming back to the US for a vacation a few weeks ago, I finally saw what it looks like in person and I had to have it (Yes, I like smartphones). Of course ironically it FINALLY released in Japan just days after I left but that's besides the point.
Anyway, I have the WiFi turned on and the phone has found my location for the HTC Sense weather widget, however the internet won't load and when I try to connect to Google to use the Marketplace and such, it says there is an error communicating with the servers, and that my phone might not be set up for data provision.
Someone please tell me that Sprint hasn't locked down this such that you can't even use the Wi-Fi until it's activated. Though I suspect that is indeed the case...
...and IF that is so, then am I correct in the understanding that flashing it with some custom ROM would solve the problem? I have never rooted a phone before, though I do own a number of unlocked ones (Nexus S, Xperia Play, etc) and so I had intended to try it out with this, since I can never actually use this as a phone. But perhaps it might be more of a necessity than I had expected.
Not sure if this will help you, but if you flash Warm Z, or any other of the froyo/sense 2.2 ROMs, during setup it will ask you if you want to use it on the data network or only on wifi.
Since you don't need 4g anyway, I would recommend checking it out. One of my favorite ROMs.

I can't say this with confidence, because my Evo hasn't been deactivated before, but as far as I understood it, you should be able to connec to WiFi, whether the phone is activated or not. You shouldn't need to be activated to use WiFi. When you connected to the WiFi network, did it connect successfully and show good signal strength?
How about formatting the phone and then turning on airplane mode and then wifi. It should work fine
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on Android OS. We now have CyanogenMod.
Yes, being a used phone, I would highly recommend do a factory reset on it first. That way it will be clear of anything the previous owner might have done to it.
And yes, the phone will work on wifi only without a data plan, just make sure the phone is in airplane mode all the time, then turn the wifi on.
I had that happen to me with a old android when I did a factory rest you should have wifi but you can't use the market or gmail without a data plan from sprint at least I could not but I had a Samsung moment and it was rooted with a costume ROM on it I've never had my evo turned of so IDK..... If thats the case you can use other ways to get apps like Amazon or applanet thats what I did anyway......

Thanks to everyone who provided assistance. A few things:
1. The phone was actually still sealed. The security stickers were still on the phone and the manual, and even the battery was still unopened. Furthermore the phone itself still had the plastic sheet over the screen in perfect condition (something I've not even got from so-called new unlocked phones) so unless the seller went through really great loops to make it look new, it is apparently new. Though I will format the memory just incase.
2. I turned on Airplane mode as everyone suggested, and then when I turned on WiFi it let me connect to the Android Marketplace actually.
Actually, can I ask one more question, though unrelated. I want someone to confirm this:
I have two different contract carriers with me here roaming (Docomo and Softbank), both on Android Phones (the Xperia Play unlocked and Desire HD locked respectively). I have the mobile data transmission set to off (no roaming), however the actual phone service is on roaming. Every time I turn on the phones I receive messages from the carriers about roaming charges for data. I want to confirm that if the data roaming is OFF, and it is on Wi-Fi always, there are no charges for anything other than if I were to make a phone call, is this correct? I am 99.999% sure this is true, but part of me is really worried about returning and seeing a $10,000 bill.
but you can't use the market or gmail without a data plan from sprint

Yes you absolutely can. To the phone, a wifi connection is the same as a 3g connection, its just a way to access the internet.

You could still get charged for any texts/picture mail you receive, as those still go through the regular phone radio, not the data radio.

Drat...I've received a number of those actually, but all from the carriers themselves which I think might be free of charge.
Japan basically doesn't do SMS/MMS thus it's really not an issue. And while Softbank does to an extent, I can't seem to actually receive any while here, as it actually keeps saying I have undelivered mail.
But I am happy everyone here mentioned the Airplane Mode detail as I had no idea you could use Wi-Fi in it. I had been angry because there seemed like no way to shut off the cellular radio and that provided a solution.
Sorry if I seem paranoid, but I literally received a bill for $5400 last December due to a carrier mistake (and they actually had the nerve to accuse me of using an overseas phone when I CLEARLY was using a locked one) and ever since I have been scared about getting another. Currently Docomo is the only carrier in Japan that will allow unlocked phones to be used, though in doing so you are thus accepting that your data transmission charge will be capped at $120 a month instead of the normal $75 for its sanctioned (locked) products. But Japan is so far behind with smartphones I can't stand to use any of them.
[Q] Switching G3 from T-Mobile to AT&T? (...also temporarily back to stock question)
Sorry for any eyestrain on this one!! At this point, I don't see any option except to switch carriers. I'm hoping I can still use my G3 (D851)... From the posts I've found, it appears I can take my G3 to AT&T. One person said I wouldn't get LTE, yet at least another stated they'd switched with success (see: Love my G3, hate T-Mobile)
My main questions are: 1) can it truly be used on AT&T's network and get 4G/LTE speeds (I'm on the Westbank of New Orleans, if that helps)? And 2) I've read T-Mo will provide the unlock code for me to switch to AT&T, but what about the software? Does AT&T do anything more than provide a SIM card? Mine is currently running flashed stock 20b, rooted, and have TWRP flashed. I'm wondering if I should do an "untouched stock restore" using ThePagel's or ...?
The history (and one other thought/question before jumping ship):
From the start, I've had normally very slow data speeds and of late, dropped or missed calls (voicemail alert pops up while I've had my phone next to me and didn't ring once), etc. I've talked/worked with tech support over the months without any resolution. Their Personal CellSpot hasn't helped boost or stabilize my calls in my home. And using wifi calling works ok (not sure it's 100% either), but not practical nor reasonable when I'm paying for LTE (or at least stable 4G) service! I get great speeds and stable calls even .25 miles from my home & neighborhood, but very poor service at and around my neighborhood.
Talking with support the last time resulted in them realizing my phone is rooted and stating the warranty is now voided!! They still said they'd look into it, but think they'll just point to the rooting as the cause. But it's not the phone as I get great speeds outside of my neighborhood - as close as .25 miles away. I also switched SIM cards just to make sure it wasn't that...
Last thought was reflash stock 20b (or should I use 20e, if I can use one click to reroot 20e later?) using [Firmware](Upgrade+Root/Downgrade/Unroot) Files+Flashing Guide [TOT/KDZ/TWRP] 6/10/15 via the TWRP method (wipe and installing D85120B/E-Untouched_Stock_Restore.zip) and see if that helps any first. Plus maybe support will be more helpful having it back to stock before I jump ship!
Thanks and again sorry, for the long post but wanted as much info as possible along with my questions!
Switching to Att should work since they both use the same networks, though i would suggest flashing stock and see if that helps although it just seems that your house is in a dead zone
Inside my house is horrible (at best 1 Mbps if I'm lucky, even with the Personal cellspot appearing to be have a strong signal). But it's still only around 2 Mbps up to 2-3 blocks away from my house too...then gets a lot better. And my neighborhood is a very populated area a few blocks off the main expressway/highway!
To flash back to stock to check and see, I can use ThePagel's TWRP method at: [Firmware](Upgrade+Root/Downgrade/Unroot) Files+Flashing Guide [TOT/KDZ/TWRP] 6/10/15, use D85120E-Untouched_Stock_Restore.zip for TWRP, do all 15 steps, and then test?
Either way (it fixes my issue or I go to AT&T), I can later re-root using One Click and re-flash TWRP, right? Also curious if/when I go to AT&T, do they re-flash with their own bloatware or just provide a SIM card (can always call them too, but am curious about other's experiences). I should be able to re-root and clean off (or freeze via TB) their bloatware if they do re-flash?
Also figure I can dump my insurance since T-Mo "voided" my warranty (unless the tech notes don't go anywhere) *sigh*.
Again thanks for any/all suggestions and confirmations on switching, re-flashing, etc.

yup! just use ThePagel's method and if it still is having problems, you could always go to At&t.
they don't install their own bloatware either and i think that they just give you the SIM card if you already have a phone.
Thanks so much! And that was my impression - just a new SIM card if I switch to AT&T.
One last question - I'd figure flash 20e straight off to test and have the latest. To be sure, but does One Click work on 20e (I've only used PurpleDrake while still on KitKat)? It lists 5.x.x as supported, but don't want to "lock" myself out from getting rooted again!!

Purpledrake works on 20e, thats how i rooted my Replacement, usually if it doesn't work, it wouldn't even touch it so you cant get locked out.

Most definitely appreciate the continued responses! I should have worded it a bit clearer...while I don't want a problem with rooting, mentioning "lockout" earlier actually I'd meant just that want to install 20e and be able to get root back!
Thinking about it, I can always go back to 20b and root if necessary if I do encounter problems with PurpleDrake or One Click. From reading each strength & weakness, using the TWRP method back to stock should be sufficient. It'll either clear up my data/reception issue or show it's due to low signal in my neighborhood. Doubtful though since the phone does well in other areas. But maybe being stock I can get a final verdict from from T-Mo support before I opt to jump ship. But not sure about any recourse on them "voiding" my LG warranty due to being rooted *sigh*.

i'm almost sure that it has nothing to do with your phone and t-mobile just doesn't want to admit the signal strength since your reception is fine not even a mile from your house so they are blaming it on you Rooting
i don't know how they can just say your "voided" since they really haven't even looked at your phone, if anything you could go to a store just say to replace it and if they say it's voided show them that it's in stock

Quite true, I think I'm beating my head against a wall as it appears to just be a dead spot. I figure if nothing else, I'm getting my phone set stock with 20E (in preparation for going to AT&T & removing T-Mo bloatware). I wondered about getting a new phone since all else has failed. Figure they might balk w/o out tech support's go ahead(?). Also with JUMP protection, do I qualify for a new phone or a refurb (likely best to stay w/mine if it's a refurb seeing my phone seems fine anyway).
As for detection, T-Mo has their software along with a health check which makes note of rooting or not. In talking with tech support the last time, it seemed they were able to tell...not sure if setting it back and talking with another might clear this, but...
Well, likely one last go around with support and see what they found in researching due to my call over a week ago (lol, do they really do any researching - last one stated they had all positive reports in my neighborhood - guess none of my neighbors have T-Mo!).

Well, if you've payed more than half you can turn that phone in and get a new one, the protection will just give you a refurb. When mine broke I had to pay 100$ instead of 600$ for the refurbished.
I forgot about lookout, although if they say it's called health check it's probably the tmobile app since that has a feature literally called health check (check it off before calling if it's
on)
I haven't really seen their personal Hotspot stuff so I don't even know if it's just a signal repeater, though it probably is.
Unless they specifically asked people if their signal is fine, that "research" is probably fabricated.
Glad I could be of help!
I plan on paying off the phone so I can "jump" ship, lol! In my experience with refurbs and it appearing to not be phone related, seems best to stick with my tried and true one (unless can get a brand new G3, but is that really a gain unless I jumped to a G4 first, big lol!!!!).
Yes, the main Personal cellspot is supposed to placed where the reception is strongest, and repeat the signal with coverage throughout the house (via a secondary repeater I believe). Doesn't seem to help any...
Exactly about the lip service. Once I did get one tech person who provided factual info. I asked how their coverage map could show good coverage at my daughter's middle school (good ways down the highway and less populated, but not rural, lol). Yet best I could get reception-wise was the "Make an emergency phone call" symbol!! She said the map was not correct. They were working on upgrading their 2g towers but it'd be some time... Shoot, the map hasn't change in over 10 months, so same canned statement as my neighborhood from day one: "Please be patient, they're upgrading the towers and it's not an over night process". And I can't even get 2g there!
My overall dissatisfaction is over 10 months and still using the tower upgrades in the middle of a populated area as an reason?? Wish they could physically check my area. Seems better when out in open, but it's clearly at least a 3-4 block area with issues. And especially when close to, or inside the homes. And don't understand how it can drop off so dramatically (0-.5Mbps inside my house and area homes, 1-2Mbps outside my door, 2-3Mbps in the street, and up to 10-15Mbps beyond 3 blocks) - but guess chalk that up to the towers, signal strength, etc.
Final response/result of my going back to stock & then re-rooting/installing TWRP.
Using the TWRP method of going back to stock via ThePagel's method worked without a hitch. Big thumbs up to him for his instructions!!
As expected, testing my speeds afterwards didn't make a difference but at least I had a clean phone running 20e!
To re-root, I tried PurpleDrake but it just didn't seem to work. It was similar to when I went back to 10m stock - made it part way and closed out. Rerunning seemed to get me root before, but no success this time. I went ahead and ran One Click and it went very smoothly (only issue was I had to manually put my phone into Download mode when it tried to identify my device/port). Afterwards, was able to use flashify and install TWRP without a hitch. So all in all, a rather painless test though most definitely appears I'll have to try switching to AT&T.
Oh and as for worrying about T-Mo support stating I'd "voided" my manufacturer warranty. No big deal since LG's warranty is only 1 year anyway and I'm at 11 months... I'll stick with my phone anyway - no sense tempting fate with a new one when I see good performance on it in other areas nearby. ...Unless someone has a good point on why to try and get T-Mo to swap it out before I switch!
Thanks again!!
To start this is on the AT&T Note 5 64Gb bought yesterday. When I am on cellular data my web browsing experience is just fine. The second I turn on WiFi however it takes exponentially longer to load web pages.
It makes no sense because I am sitting here with my iPhone 6 Plus and it works just fine. Is there a way to fix this? I am quite upset right now that I dropped $400+ on a device that cant even do simple WiFi browsing.
And for those who need more info. I have changed DNS, made IP Static, cleared cache of phone and Chrome. The network is 2.4ghz and no other networks nearby are on my channel. I have no clue what to do here(ex Apple user)...
Sound like AT&T thing. MO money in data then WiFi. IPhone's sxxk ups. I remember it wasn't long they had android high speed cut back. Thinking it was around when Motorola Atrix first cane out. Just to sell more IPhone's

Well I have some more information now...
I took out my sim card and the WiFi works great. I can browse the web really fast, the play store icons load quick and there is no lag at all. What the heck could cause that????
Also no way they would be trying to get money from me(unless they are dumb) cause I have unlimited data.
I just put back the sim and the problem is back. Are these phones that poorly designed that they cant have a sim in at same time as WiFi?
FINAL RESULTS: The sim card that was shipped to me is dead. I took out my family members sim and tried it in my phone and all works well. Shame on AT&T for this one. The phone was fine they made the mistake.
Does anyone know how to re-provision it or do I have to take it in now.
Not sure what you mean when you say the sim card is dead. Easiest thing may be to just get a new sim card since they are free. You can activate it at the store or over the phone.
Well they replaced the phone and it was working well in store. I get home and do the AT&T update and now the same issue has appeared. Is anyone else on the newest version and having issues???? This is the only thing that could cause the issue. Is there a way to revert to the old system version because this is not acceptable!
This is going to be long but I want to make sure I give as much details as possible. I went to preorder a note 10+ 5g. Was going to do a trade in but right before I finished the order decided to go with the BOGO deal instead and add a friend to my account. I received both of the phones and had 4g issues. Most apps had trouble loading anything. If I waited with the app open eventually it would start loading things up but not all apps acted like this. They may hang some but worked ok. Speed tests showed I had a good signal. After talking with tech support on the phone and going to Verizon stores several times they still couldn't get things to act right. They switched sim and phone out in store. One of the store managers said my first order was pending and that 1 if not both of the phones I had were supposed to be in there warehouse and that I wasn't even supposed to have them. They told me the best thing to do was to return the phones and start over. They had trouble returning the phones since I wasn't even supposed to have them. What they had to do was to charge me the full amount of both phones to my account and the credit me the amount. They said after my billing cycle was over they would do it and once my account was back to normal then try to upgrade again (still ended up paying extra on my bill for that ). So I went into Verizon yesterday and did my upgrade and still had the same issue and if I wanted to return them again I'd have to pay the $50 restocking fee . So I called them AGAIN! They have a ticket out but I tried to see what I could figure out on my own. I downloaded a network switcher app and went to 3g and everything was slow but worked fine. Everything also works fine on wifi. One thing I noticed in the app when I ran a ping was that IPv4 connected but IPv6 failed. It said IPv6: fail (1). Anyone else having this issue or know what's going on or know a fix? This is very annoying!

A couple years back we had problems with my daughter not being able to send or receive text messages and after endless efforts on the phone and going to the phone store where they suggest a new phone we looked on her Verizon account and she had some restrictions on there somehow for sending text messages. Long story short look at your account with Verizon and look at every single little nitty-gritty detailed setting - there might be something on your phone line or both phone lines that disallow 4g? Have the store try a different SIM card - NOT ON YOUR ACCOUNT, BUT A DIFFERENT ACCOUNY - and if the 4G works fine on the phone with a different sim card with a different phone number and account then the problem is with the carrier account you have...

I went through everything and didn't see nothing. As soon as I returned the phones and went back to my note 8 without making changes to my account everything worked like it was supposed to again.
RE: 4G Connection Issues with Note 10+ 5G
Hello,
I had the same phone with the same issue and am on the phone with Verizon Wireless now. We found that the 5G version will not read the 4G signal like it is supposed for some reason. So if you are not in a 5G area the data will not work. I just switched to the non-5G version of the Note 10+. We found this out by switching my plan to one that did not have 5G attached and everything worked just fine until we switched it back to the plan with 5G attached.
