Where these Radio ROMS are coming from? - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV ROM Development

Hi,
I was just wondering, there are like 20 Radio ROMs for Diamond. They are not official from HTC, there is no source code and yet, they are different. Where do they come from? Who is writing them?
And is there any readme coming with the ROMs from the ROM authors explaining exactly what is different and fixed?

There is no developer in XDA-dev who writes these radios. They are from HTC, and come mostly from country- and operatorspecific versions. Not all localizations are delivered with the same radiorom. Whenever an operator finds a problem with their network, HTC builds a new release that should fix the problem. Due to this fact, there is no guarantee that a newer release is always better for your specific operator, there might even be adverse effects from an operator-specific fix.
Furthermore, there are lots of devices with similar hardware, and currently the Diamond and the Blackstone (Touch HD) seem to use an identical or nearly identical radio. This makes sense from the manufacturer's point of view, as diversity in the hardware requires separate development, resulting in doubled development cost.
That's why it is of no value to state "Rom xy uses a lot/less energy" or "is unstable/has worse reception" unless the poster states his country and his network operator.
Have fun!

Why are WM6 Roms hardware specific?

I'm new to this site but have been working with PDAs for years.
Can anyone explain why upgrade ROMS (WM6) are specific to the manufacture of phone.
Waht if you were able to find two phones with identicle processors, would both of them be able to utilize the same upgrade ROM? I'm assuming not, if thats the case, why?
I recently upgraded from a Benq P50 to a Benq P51 and I'm guessing there will NEVER be any WM6 ROMS for this device; considering its rarity. Even though the phone is more than capable of handling the new OS
Cheers,
-Mat
What's inside the roms can typically be made non hardware specific, eg extracting the files etc from the roms and moving to a new device. However, what is manufacturer specific is things like drivers to support your specific processor, hardware interface, radio, screen, touch screen etc. If you can find appropriate versions of these things etc, it may be possible to put together a rom for your device.
But it helps to get these things from beta roms already produced by the company, because making drivers etc yourself is hard work.

Sorry for offtopic, but it seems to me there is some japanese wm6 rom for p51

GPS activation coming!

First let me start off by saying thank you to everyone for all your great work and excellent posts, i have been a guest and member for a very long time but never need to post or had anything to contribute. thanks again now onto the GPS activation, i know this is a rather touchy subject for some so please dont bash if you disagree.
- I am switch from the 8525 (at&t) to the mogul (sprint) b/c i am saving 170$ although i loved my 8525. While learning and viewing the sprint forums for information about the mogul i found they have been having in depth conversation about the GPS.
1 - the gps is not believed to be stand alone
2 - the antenna issue from what i could read could or could not be there as sprint users took pictures on the phone and found what should be the gps antenna. but regard less when unlocked we should be able to A-GPS (a sort of triangulation between towers to give a approximate position).
3 - further proof that the gps must be able to work other than for emergency's is sprint's release of the EV-D0 rev. a ROM intended to unlock the gps in response to the TILT from ATT.
proof from HTC's site
"HTC is currently developing a separate ROM update which enables the EV-DO Rev. A and GPS capabilities that are already built into the Mogul hardware. Sprint and HTC plan to make this software ROM available in early 1Q 2008. We would also like to extend our thanks to those customers that have taken the time to identify and report these issues to us."
It would be my assumption but this is where i could be wrong and would like to open debate. the ROM should be able to be hacked allowing other hermes to unlock theyre GPS for use with other applications.
hope this excites some of you and gives you hope of one day getting your "gps enabled" or disabled hermes depending on how you look at it to work with tom tom or telenav etc..
omg,
i can´t believit, jejej.
If coming true, this will be the best notice i´ve heard about hermes.
Many thanks dsh897, i will follow this thread

Google is your friend: http://www.america.htc.com/support/mogul/software-downloads.html
(about 2/3 the way down the page)
Thats a great news indeed
I still doubt abt the possibility of unlocking GPS in our Hermes.
As do I unfortunately, but more than happy to be proven wrong
noobish questions...
may i ask why only for the mogul? Is this something all hermes owners can benefit from?
great!!!
I hope so
hermes ๆๆๆๆ
I am a little confused...... I thought it was widely agreed that it was not a software problem but a hardware problem..
Have I missed something ?
I thought this too - that there was no actual antenna hooked up to the GPS pins or something?
I am not sure what's the hardware similarities between hermes and mogul, but gps for hermes was discussed before...look in to this thread for more details

Yeah, I followed this thread at the time. Is the mogul a rebranded hermes or is it a different phone ?
from what i'm seeing the mogul hardware is similar to the tilt and not the tytn ( they carry the same processor).. this meens it's not compatible with the hermes..... i could be wrong

It looks that way it has a qualcomm prosessor instead of the samsung
Guys weve been here before, check the threads on this.
The GPS hardware has been woken up and functions correctly.....however the pins are not connected to a suitable antenna. The most i detected on the Hermes was 2 sattelites and these were not real fixes either.
A hardware mod is required to get the GPS working on the hermes which can be done however wouldnt it be easier to just grab a cheap bluetooth module and settle with it?
Here are link 1 and link 2 to the old GPS for Hermes threads. GPS driver link. And yes Hermes has Samsung processor, but Hermes' radio chip is made by Qualcomm And that is the chip that matters for GPS). But as Mr. Vanx said there is no available antenna.
maybe some people would be willing to do a hardware mod, if it can be done

I followed both threads at the time with great interest. I wasn't sure if on occassion, this was something new that had been discovered previously or something that could have been missed. Obviously in this instance neither is the case

That is very intresting, I'm intrigued to see if HTC rolls out a rom for Hermes like you describe (though I doubt it the Mogul has different chipsets, this issue has been explored at length in the forums). That said triangulation based GPS is already available for free for all windows mobile phones with the latest version of google maps, the thread is
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=348310
Install the new map, and click the my location option (right button top option) it will provide you with your triangulated location and is usually pretty close.
Seeing as Sprint (and therefore the Mogul) and AT&T (Hermes) use totally different radio technologies, I'm surprised that no one mentioned this earlier.
The Hermes is a GSM phone, operating on the GSM cell systems around the world.
The Mogul, being a Sprint phone, should function primarily on CDMA, just like Verizon.
That said, the hardware differences alone (processor aside) should make this discussion moot in my opinion. You just can't use a CDMA radio ROM on a GSM radio... and I would be highly surprised if the Mogul and Hermes were anything more than just similar looking phones.
Just as a side note... Google Maps now works moderately well on the Hermes, even without a GPS. I'm unsure if this is due to AT&T adding location information or to GMM being able to figure it out, but my phone knows where it is when I run GMM.

Developer needed: Custom WM 6.x ROM for HTC HD (will pay)

Hello,
I am posting a simple project request with a small budget in hopes that a Freelance Developer would be willing to take it on.
This project would be a good opportunity for some quick income.
My project is to build a custom ROM for my unlocked Windows Mobile 6.1 HTC Touch HD T8282 (Blackstone), for personal use.
The ROM will incorporate different aspects of the following WM HTC phones:
- HTC Touch Diamond P3700 (Rogers – Canada)
- HTC Touch Pro (Raphael) T7272
- HTC Touch HD (Blackstone) T8282 & T8285 (Telstra)
- HTC Touch Diamond 2 (Topaz) T5353
- HTC Touch Pro 2 (Rhodium) T7373
- HTC Touch HD 2 (Leo) T8585
I have done research on the XDA Developers website, and have the specifications I would like the ROM to include. Also, I have saved relevant “threads” which link to files and examples which I will upload to the project once accepted. I have also downloaded some of the key files (WM 6.1 cabs) and HD updates that I will upload as well once accepted. The majority of the files are already existing (somewhere) on the XDA Developer webiste.
I have not included updates of other HTC models (but can be found on the (HTC Worldwide site - support)
I have not included extracted oem cab files from the various HTC model stock roms.
I have not used the many other “developer” sites – the amount of information is over-whelming.
There is a YouTube link by XDA user starbase64 (German) - But I cannot post it - yet (I am a new user, 1st post) for a general idea of what I would like to accomplish:
As I do not have a programming background, I am not able to create the ROM myself, and that is why I must outsource my project. There may be additional components that are required, that I am not aware of, which I will defer to the more knowledgeable freelancer.
Currently, the shipped HTC Touch HD ROM does not support North American (Canada – Rogers) 3G speed (EDGE is max), whereas the Australian Telstra version (T8285) does support the same frequencies as North America. As all other specifications on both HD versions (’82 & ’85) are identical, I assume that the radio can be successfully switched, though I have not found a thread on the XDA Developer site showing so. This may not even be possible (therefore I defer to the more knowledgeable freelancer).
Also, as the HTC Touch HD T8282 is a Windows Mobile 6.1 phone, I would like to upgrade to WM 6.5.3 (or 6.5.5) while retaining the basic WM 6.1 GUI (not WM 6.5.x GUI), as I prefer the HTC TFlo3D shell GUI (again I defer to the more knowledgeable freelancer).
Finally, the “new” HTC Touch HD will require a compatible “HardSPL” (for flashing), which would the Freelancer’s responsibility to include in the project submission upon completion.
Communication for clarification/issues/concerns/modifications/etc... can be started once a willing freelancer has been accepted.
Freelancer.com/ca posting - Cannot post - yet.
Anyone interested please PM me.. Thanks.
This has to be a joke on so many levels. Though for your sake, here's a healthy bump for that lucky developer out there who is destine for this job.

Why would this be a joke?
I would like a custom rom, and I can't do it myself.
Look up the post on Freelancer.com/ca...
I'm willing to "donate" (pay) $100 for the project towards the dev, or the website (if they prefer).
I just want a custom rom.
Here is a more my posting on the Freelancer.com / .ca website, if interested...
http://www.freelancer.ca/projects/Android-Symbian/Developer-needed-Custom-ROM-for.html
I am not a WinMo user, so cannot comment on whether the rest of your demands are available in other ROMs (though I suspect they are), but your phone does not 3G in North America as the radio hardware is different.
There are custom ROMs out there that will likely have everything else you require, and if you are willing to pay $100 for a custom ROM for an old phone, you might as well just look at buying a newer phone that does suit your requirements, then use a readily available custom ROM for that.

Hi Mr.Lambomanx,
Thank you for replying to my thread.
The reason why I would like a custom rom, is because I really like the HTC TFlo 3D, (and Sense)and have seen how it could be modified.
I am not really a heavy app user, however, I have seen apps being cooked into roms, which (please correct me if I am wrong), seem to increase performance as it's part of the rom.
I'm really not a fan of the newer Android phones, as some of them are a little "too flashy", and don't have WMLive, or WMOffice included which I rely on.
Over the last few months I have seen some of the amazing custom roms possible, however I have not found one I want personally.
That's why I'm asking an XDA developer with no success..
Regarding the Radio for 3G on the Blackstone T8282. According to the specs (found on the HTC site), nothing differs from the T8285 Telstra apart from the frequency capability. Since the "radio" is software, why would it not be just as inter-changeable as any other piece of software?
Your feedback is greatly appreciated, as is any one else's.
Of course, TouchFlo 3D already comes with the device, but anything else that is new (like from Sense) would have to be ported over.
A built-in app is merely just one that comes with it; there is no performance difference.
When you say too flashy, what do you mean?
The radio isn't just a piece of software, it is essentially the firmware that the radio equipment runs. However, we refer to the firmware as the "radio" because there are differences and optimisations for different networks, for example.
The problem is that the phone is so old, and you'd probably not end up with a great experience running all of this new software on it. The age also means that there won't be much support for it.
You really would have a better experience buying a new phone, I'm afraid; you can find better alternatives for software that you use, and any mobile platform out there now is far superior to WM; WM is very much an old OS that has been taken too far.

Hi again Mr.L,
What I mean by "too flashy" is that I find the newer HTC Android phones have the clock, plus the weather (in the clock), plus the weather animation on the homepage. Also, the clock is now the circular analog, when it was the "flip clock" that's become HTC's "signature". Plus the whole "pinkish" look isn't my thing.
I really like this (YouTube link below) rom created by XDA user starbase64, however when contacted, he informed me that he is focusing his efforts on 'droid dev.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jjCNIZcM5s
Mr.64 has manged to combine TFlo3D with Sense on an HD.
That's the kind of "look" I like.
The things XDA users (and sights like it) create is just AWESOME.
I searched this kitchen thread from him, but there are no images for me to see if it's the video rom (plus then link goes from XDA to rapidshare - in German)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=460822
Regarding performance: I have read threads where the post-er has created a new rom that has newer, and sometimes more "things" than the original oem, and their cooked rom is producing better ram usage, is faster and better battery performance. I figured that this is related to the app being built into the rom, rather than added / installed after.
Regarding radio: The radio is firmware..? How is it possible that people can upgrade their radio with newer oem radios? (some being from a different build of the same phone)
That is why I wonder if the T8282's radio can be substituted with the T8285 Telstra. If the phone is able to upgrade the radio, shouldn't it be able to support any version of the radio found in different builds (of the same phone)?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Blackstone/Radio_Flashing
**Though I noted that radio is dependent of the rom build.
Regarding new phone: Unfortunately, I disappointed that "Balmer" made WP7 generic and HTC can't add any (well, "Sense")
I was contemplating the iPhone (mainly for the apps, and fluidity), but the "home screen" sucks.
I still want something to look at.
More than likely I will BEND OVER and get a BB (Torch 2 9850/Storm 3), mainly cause everyone keeps asking for my "pin", but I've never been all impressed with BB in general.
RIM's problem isn't really them being behind Apple. It's more of them revealing (things in the works) too far in advance causing delays.
Apple just goes: BAM! Surprise! iPadX LTE!
You have to remember that with Android, there is a huge amount of customisability. The clock can be changed for a million other ones, etc. As for the pinkishness, that's just a background
The performance improvements will be down to the optimisations the dev makes, not anything else.
The radio is that you upgrade is firmware, which can be changed for improved performance. Radio firmware is also separate from the ROM, so you can change that to whatever you like. However, the hardware is still limited to whatever it is designed to support, it is different hardware.
To be honest, if you like Sense so much, an Android phone sounds perfect for you. Sense on Android is very similar to how it was on the WM devices, like the HD2. Do take a look!

Hi Mr.L,
Thanks for your feedback, it's much appreciated.
While I do understand 'Droid's customability (real word?), I'm really not to big on 'Droid. I really don't like the "version segmentation" problems they face (though, I've "heard" Google is becoming more strict with Honeycomb). Maybe in the future I would get an Android device, if one catches my eye.
You being in the UK is sweet for receiving the newest phones, and more selection.
There's not a big selection in North America, Canada even less than the US.
Regarding the radio firmware: How do you, (or anyone) know that the T8282, is different hardware than the T8285?
I cannot find a spec sheet showing any difference.
Regarding the rom request: Another reason why I made the request is since my device (HD) is considered "legacy", I thought it would be easier to cook, since many chefs already made dishes.
Even if i cannot get the 3G radio, I could still have something like what Mr.64 created.
I thought that there would be at least one Chef willing to "microwave" a dish for me.

The problem that people claim is there with Android is fragmentation of the specification of phones on the market; to the end user, there is no effect. In my opinion, it is a load of rubbish.
We do get everything first here!
The difference is that the T8285 supports North American 3G frequencies, while the T8282 supports the rest if the world's frequencies.
The problem is that the Touch HD is very much legacy; very few support it now as a result.
Unfortunately, I can't really help you much when it comes to ROMs; I have no knowledge of WM devices. All you can do is look at the Touch HD section of XDA (is there one?) and see what you can find.
But really, don't dismiss newer platforms just like that. You really need to try Sense on a newer device; it is a full experience on Android, not just a skin on top of the OS. You'd adjust easily, and it is very well done

Yes, most likely I will be purchasing a new phone in the near future...
HOWEVER, regardless of new or old wouldn't any "customization" not oem require an XDA Dev (or like)?
That's why I figured why not "pimp out" my HD, and that will keep me satistified until I find something a really like.
***Question:
Can Anyone tell me how much work is involved in "cooking"?
Like man hours using an existing kitchen...
I assume seasoned Chefs like Mr.Duttythoy makes his own kitchen from scratch?
How long would it have taken him to produce one of his well respected roms?
(I have a post in the mod request forum referring to my lack of programming knowledge, and how programming knowledge is a definite requirement for cooking)
SO No, I am NOT able to cook for myself.

That would be fine, but as we've established, it is now a legacy device. You certainly won't find another dev willing to work on the phone for you.
The amount of hours that goes into these ROMs is...well, it really depends on what is wanted in the ROM. We're talking hundreds of hours over a period of time. A single ROM, from scratch, if anything needs to ported, again, tens of hours.

ARGH!!!
This is frustrating!
I've checked out the new Android phones coming out this month (Rogers - Canada): HTC Evo 3D, and LG Optimus 3D.
While the 3D is VERY appealing,... (the phone) NOT my style..
Microsoft threw some nails in the WM coffin in the last few weeks, with the discontinuing of the Marketplace, and My Phone. (The Live Mesh beta was sweet, but ended)
I REALLY wanted MY rom...
Can anyone reading at least give me a quote on how much ($)they'd be willing to make it for??
(Then I can better judge if it is worthwhile (cost))
**I'm not having much luck on the Freelancer site I mentioned either...
Right now, as it stands, IF I get a new mobile soon it would be the (BIG SIGH) Blackberry Torch 9860 (Monza) - the full touch BB.
But I'm not a BB fan!
(I'm not even much of a 'Droid') fan... **not trying to offend 'Droid lovers
I'm not a chef for the Blackstone (Touch HD), so I won't be able to help you make the ROM, but I can offer a couple of pointers.
1. As was mentioned, the 3G radio hardware is different in your device to what the US frequencies are. Yes, you can update the radio firmware, but this is only tweaking what the hardware can do and how it performs, i.e. battery performance, signal strength and so forth. 3G is frequency specific and must be taken into consideration before making a device purchase because the hardware cannot be changed without swapping out the main board. If you want to do that, then it would still be cheaper to get the other device.
2. You should ask about this in the device-specific forum that you want the ROM created for. Not many devs are going to regularly check this area. You would do well to either PM them or simply post this thread in the Blackstone forum.

Well what I would of done is went to the development thread find the latest rom releases and contact that developer for this project. I was bored so I went and did half of it for you . The latest I found was the Eneregy Rom series released July 4 which is close enough. NRGZ28 makes the Energy rom series, I would get ahold of him and let him know about your project and that you are willing to pay, maybe you might get lucky

I WOULD have posted in the HTC Touch HD forum - but, I'm pretty sure it's against the forum rules... I asked a Mod, they "said" I shouldn't (not can't), so I didn't risk it - I know how you guys are with the forum/post ish
I have TRIED to contact devs via PM, but other than the mods, or really helpful types, the reply is nil.
I'm not sure how to request a thread move...

THANKS Mr.Viper!
I will definitely look into that!

Why is the HTC Arrive so ignored?

No custom roms... No unlocks... Nothing..... Why??
Because it is a secure device like the dell venue pro. The other HTC devices (gen 1) had a long standing HTC bootloader exploit.
Actually, I don't think it's really any more secure. It's just because, frankly, the world runs on GSM. The US and a very few other countries use CDMA, but the international hacking community has relatively little interest in CDMA devices - they couldn't use one even if they could buy one.
The DFT guys claim to have a working bootloader unlock for the CDMA devices (Arrive and Verizon Trophy) and, given that, I'm sure custom ROMs will come eventually. It will take time, though; I think DFT didn't even have the devices until a few months ago.
As for homebrew, most of the original HTC homebrew (TouchXplorer, Advanced Explorer, etc.) worked fine on the Arrive. Additionally, there's lots of device-agnostic homebrew that works on anything (assuming it has been dev-unlocked).
The problem is the interop-lock. I (and a few others) are researching universal interop-unlocks, but so far we haven't made one work. Aside from LG, no devices have a registry editor already available, so we have to take over another program and make it edit the registry for us. The only apps that have successfully been used for this so far are network configuration apps, because they have a lot of configuration data and we can often modify it. The Arrive is permanently locked to a single network, so there's no point in it having a network configuration app.
On my list of reasons why I prefer GSM over CDMA, "can use hackable network configuration tools" would normally be pretty far down the list. Since the release of Mango and the interop-lock, though, it's become much more important on WP7. I don't really have anything against Sprint as a company - they just use a poor choice of wireless technology. CDMA is to GSM as Imperial is to Metric; the US keeps on using it and everybody else thinks we're crazy for it.
This actually belongs in the Q/A section, but if you look at most other devices (droid custom, windows mobile, etc) the GSM customizations are much more numerous than their CDMA counterparts.
Pretty much GoodDayToDie nailed it as to why the CDMA counterparts don't see a lot of action. Most of the major teams live in countries where GSM is the norm.

T-Mobile VoLTE deadline, Galaxy S5 VoLTE prospects, and potential alternatives

I'm not entirely sure which forum would be most appropriate to post this under, but this seems like a decent candidate, so I'm starting here. If this would fit better somewhere else, please feel to redirect me, and/or even move the thread if appropriate. I think I've read all the appropriate sticky threads et cetera, but if I do make / am making a faux pas, please let me know.
As you're probably aware (https://www.xda-developers.com/t-mobile-att-require-volte-phone-calls-shut-down-3g/), T-Mobile is expected to shut down its non-VoLTE voice service in January of 2021. As a result, it's imperative for anyone who gets phone service through them to have a phone with working VoLTE support before that point. As that includes me, I've been looking into that.
I currently have a Samsung Galaxy S5, purchased through T-Mobile back in 2015 (if I'm not mistaken, it's a SM-G900T). There seem to be fairly solid statements that this model does support VoLTE under the stock ROM, and indeed T-Mobile support seems to think that it should be working.
I run LineageOS - specifically klte, which matches that model. I'm currently on the August 30th, 2020 "nightly" build of version 16.0 (which was the latest available for that model as of earlier today), on top of TWRP 3.3.1 (ditto). I only recently upgraded from TWRP 2.8.7 and (IIRC) LineageOS 14.1, which I'd been running since sometime in 2017 for reasons that are out of scope but I can describe briefly if desired. The upgrade was specifically in hopes that newer LineageOS would have VoLTE support options which the earlier version did not, but that seems to have been a futile hope.
After some fairly extensive digging (mostly online, but with some poking around on my own device and in my own backups et cetera), I've concluded that while it is theoretically possible to have VoLTE support on this device under LineageOS, it's likely to be effectively impossible in practice. Threads such as https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/devs-only/port-ims-manager-to-klte-t3551084 (not the only place I've looked, but probably the last before giving up) seem to indicate that the only way to get it to work - short of reverse engineering enough of the underlying system to be able to reimplement Samsung's closed IMS implementation for that model - would be to find a Galaxy S5 with the stock ROM and working VoLTE, and copy the appropriate files out of that and into the correct places on the LineageOS-based version of the system.
I thought I'd kept a backup of the stock ROM which my S5 came with, but I haven't managed to find any sign of it in my archives. I don't think I have any other way to get at the correct files, never mind figure out where they need to go and get them there; I certainly couldn't justify buying another S5 just to be able to extract the stock ROM.
As linked from the thread referenced above, there do appear to be, or have been, other custom ROMs for the Galaxy S5 which include - or included - VoLTE support. However, I'm otherwise quite happy with LineageOS, and don't want to switch to another custom ROM line - especially since I want to avoid the data loss that would come with wiping my phone to install another ROM, unless there's absolutely no way to avoid it.
Are there any prospects for my being able to get VoLTE working on this phone under LineageOS? If so, what would I need to do to manage that, within the January deadline?
If not, or if what prospects there are don't pan out, I'm going to need to acquire a new smartphone which will be able to have VoLTE under LineageOS, and preferably one which will at least approximate meeting the other criteria which led me to select the Galaxy S5 in the first place and stick with it all this time. In particular, A: I all but insist on a conveniently user-swappable battery (I carry at least one fully-charged spare in my back pocket at all times), not so much for field battery life extension as to be able to replace the battery rather than the phone when the battery inevitably bloats and dies (I'm on something like my seventh battery for this S5), B: I really like having separate dedicated "home", "back", and (for lack of a better term) "active applications list" buttons, and the only model I know for sure has them is the S5 itself, and C: I very much want to have a traditional headphone jack. Expandable storage, in the form of a suitable SD-card slot, would also be nice but is not strictly required.
What models can I expect to be able to get VoLTE working on under LineageOS, with good support in other regards, within that January deadline? The model-support information I've been able to find in searching thus far does not seem to provide any clear indication on this point.
I don't expect recommendations on what smartphone models will be able to also meet my other criteria, although of course it would be nice; that would probably fit better under the "what phone should I buy next?" thread over in General Q&A.
No chance for adding volte. It's utopic to believe you could eben keep you phone setup.
You don't share your reason for using lineageOS. If it's about avoiding preinstalled apps, you can instead debloat stock rom.

I was afraid of that, but I did still have some hope.
Is that klte/S5-specific, or is it a more general statement about LineageOS at large, which holds true regardless of phone model?
If the latter, then LineageOS is soon to become unusable for anyone with T-Mobile service, which seems like a major problem that people would already be working actively to try to correct. (I also think I heard that other providers may make a similar change, which would make the problem more widespread; I specifically half-remember articles about AT&T in that regard. No concrete backup for that at the moment, though.)
If the former, then what phone models are there for which VoLTE does or can readily be made to work under LineageOS?

I'm a little surprised that the reasons would even be asked about, given that this is a LineageOS-specific forum; I wouldn't expect the people here to be up for directing people away from LineageOS to other ROMs.
My original impetus for using LineageOS (at the time, CyanogenMod) was simply one of principle about avoiding proprietary software and vendor lock-in/lockdown/et cetera. I also like the ability to control updates on my own, both in terms of being able to determine when I update to a new version and of being able to continue to get updates independent of whether the manufacturer/carrier/etc. continues to release them.
Avoiding preinstalled apps is certainly one aspect of it, but it's by no means the only one.
I also doubt that I could simply debloat the stock ROM, for the simple reason that I don't think I *have* the stock ROM - or if I do, it's years out of date (as I said, 2015). I left a search running overnight, and on that basis have managed to find the backup copy of the stock image that was on the phone when I received it, but unless trying to extract the necessary stack components for VoLTE support from it might be viable after all I don't know how useful that will turn out to be.
(I'm probably going to invest some time into looking into that today, anyway, but I don't really expect to get any results out of it.)

That's unfortunately fairly vague, as a basis for going out and buying a smartphone.
What I'm looking for in terms of "VoLTE does or can readily be made to work under LineageOS" is something for which a statement like one of the following can be made:
"Yes, VoLTE works on this model under LineageOS out of the box; you don't need to do anything special to get it working, just flash LineageOS and go."
"Yes, it's possible to get VoLTE working on this model under LineageOS; here's what you need to do to get it working, beyond just flashing LineageOS."
Do you know of any specific smartphone models for which you can make one of those statements?
While I'm not against investigating and experimenting and trying things out to get things to work, and in fact sometimes that can even be fun, I do not want to do that in a production environment - and I'm under deadline (albeit with a few months to go), with limited resources for experimenting (in the form of money to buy smartphones which might work), before this becomes a critical production environment.
(Also, I've found what look like IMS-related files in the backup copy of the stock ROM, which don't seem to exist in the LineageOS that's currently running on my phone. Depending on what they look like on further examination, I may try pulling them in and seeing if anything changes; worst-case scenario, I should just have to boot to recovery and restore a backup.)

Thanks! I'll investigate that option, then, in addition to any others that present themselves.

Unsurprisingly, it doesn't seem to be that simple. The files involved in this are themselves few enough, and most although not all of them don't seem to exist in the currently-running image, so they can be copied in without further ado - but there are enough references to them in other files, which either *do* exist (and so would need to be edited, in a way that leaves things compatible with both systems) or seem likely to themselves (need to) be referenced elsewhere, that the whole thing turns into a mess of cascading complexity.
Short of input from someone with expertise on IMS/VoLTE implementation from some other model, I suspect this won't turn out to be a viable avenue to pursue, at least not unless and until I have my hands on a Galaxy S5 which isn't my production phone and as such can be used for experimentation. Even then, I'll probably need to basically build my own custom ROM (or custom local build of LineageOS, at least) rather than just inserting files into a system built from an existing one.
I've looked briefly into the Moto E2, and while it does look like the newest/final models of it would support VoLTE in a way that LineageOS would plausibly be able to handle, it's also at least nearly as old as the S5 and is less capable and desirable in other ways. It'd be better than nothing, but not something I would prefer as my first choice.
I'm hoping that other people chime in with more models to suggest. As this is going to become increasingly important as more carriers shut down their 3G/2G networks, and VoLTE becomes the only way to do voice calling, I'd ideally like to see a page - possibly this thread, possibly another one, possibly a Wiki page - with as comprehensive a listing of phone models which *are* known to have working VoLTE support under LineageOS (and/or possibly other non-stock ROMs) as possible, including links to any necessary how-to directions per model and notes on any special criteria (e.g., carrier-specific support or support differences between regions or the like). I hoped something like that would already exist, given the apparent upcoming VoLTEpocalypse - but as it doesn't seem to (or at least I haven't managed to find one thus far), it wouldn't hurt to start trying to create one.
My understanding is that Verizon is apparently going to make the "VoLTE mandatory" transition in January, much the same as T-Mobile, and AT&T is planning to do it sometime in 2022. With Sprint out of the picture after the T-Mobile merger, that's basically all of the major US wireless carriers that I'm aware of, so this will be universal (at least in the USA) before too very long. Some amount of preparation to make sure the custom-ROM field will remain viable past that point would seem appropriate; I'm surprised by how little activity in that area I've been able to find thus far.

Totally agree, I'm surprised this news hasn't gotten more attention in the community. First came to mind, "ah crap, no more custom roms." (perse).
I started a thread on this on the LG v50 forums to raise awareness, hopefully there can be workarounds:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/v50-thinq/help/att-t-mobile-to-off-3g-networks-disable-t4163491

By forcing VOLTE, this can potentially lock out some unlocked phones and also exclude custom roms, forcing users to buy carrier branded phones. In addition, shutting down 3G and forcing 4G VOLTE will ensure that lots of customers upgrade/buy new phones when their current phone may be perfectly fine otherwise(unnecessary costs and more perfectly working phones in the land fill in vain).
IIRC, you could use a stock from on your S5 and just remove the bad parts. It's no substitute for AOSP but you got to do what you got to do. Plus it's free. The stock files should be available and you can use recovery to image your phone so you don't lose your data. That is the route I would go and can't really do on my S3.
Other phone selections are looking GRIM in terms of removable batteries, reasonable size, etc. You can look to the V20 or G5 from LG but you will have to do the above process and that is almost where I'm at. Poked and prodded rom isn't the end, I did it for years on my gS2 when AOSP couldn't get HW fully functional.
Motorola has models that do work but they are mostly sealed units and everything is really hard to find as its plastered all over XDA in posts from years ago. Do all rom links even work?
While we were sleeping people got taken over by the machine and the devs didn't know what was coming or couldn't figure out the proprietary implementations.
The question with Tmo is also, is band 12 mandatory or will other phones work on 2 and 4 and volte over that. Nobody has even asked the question. I'm going to try to be safe.

So odd that such a fatal issue seems to be imminently coming without some progress being made to avert it because unneeded and dangerous 5g is crowding out 2g & 3g. The s5 and note 4 are THE gold standard of excellent screen and hardware and thus the only real choices of replaceable battery phones - the REAL reason that phone mfg force millions of phones to be tossed in the landfills - shame on them! Custom Roms provide extremely important current security updates and allow apks that are updated and no longer work on slightly older android 6 versions (chase, Starbucks, united, etc). Pretty bad to discover after factory resetting a phone that play store won't let you download current or working version.
Perhaps we can crowd fund developers to attack this looming disaster soon?
