seriously low memory issues after upgrading to WM6

while on WM5 my free memory never really went below 10 M , even with several programs running.
loaded the new generic WM6 to my generic s620 and while it's nice looking, i'm having serious RAM problems. after a clean boot, free memory is around 18 M.
BUT, having a couple apps open like calendar, messaging, msn, it suddenly drops to only 2 MB available! right now, as I'm typing this it has 1,100K free ram and i have skype and IE open, everything else is closed. yes, ie cache is clean.
i did install voice command and at first suspected it for this sh*t but after disabling (removed from startup).
any ideas?
thx
Greg
Try uninstalling Skype and VoiceCommand for a few days, see how it runs then.
IE will also eat ram and not give it back until it is killed. I always remember to use celetask to close it after i'm done using it.

Talking about kill process, what's the best task manager available for smartphone?
I don't know celetask but I'll give this a try.
The question is - does your device run slowly or not allow you to run applications? Or are you just worried about a small number?
I see the same thing on mine, but it nevers runs slow and I have never hit a 'no memory' problem.
I have calendar, inbox, tasks, contacts, phone history, IE, Communicator, MSN and File Explorer open.
I agree with the above post, IE is a hog and you need to kill it from time to time.
My s620 has been running the HTC official WM6 ROM since the day it was posted and I have rebooted once since then, and that was only because I shut it down for a long flight
Maybe I'm just not a 'power user'?
It's not slow but it kicks out some apps from time to time as there is not enough memory.
For example, when browsing with IE, Skype closes sometimes. That pisses me off.

That's normal behavior when system closes some apps for wiping memory, you should try to avoid big memory "eaters" and close some of them..
For me i always try to keep 3-4 apps opened and got no problems..

yep, I know this. My problem is that WM5 vs. WM6 --> 10 MB is missing "somewhere"....
I only have Messages and Skype running, everything else is closed. But when I launch IE and it kills Skype I get pissed!
I upgraded mine to wm6 and i have no idea whats wrong, it runs beyond slow! nothin running, and lag like no other! it gets so bad sometimes that i have to restart my phone, and to restart my phone i have to pull my micro sd because i guess it doesnt like 1gig sticks! how and what do i do to fix this! also i would re rom it but i just to want to have to go through the hassle of getting BBConnect working again!
Hmmm... doesn't make sense, as mine actually runs >a lot< faster. Is yours under warranty? Sounds like yours is defective, you should talk to your carrier about a replacement device

I am not using Skype, but gonna think Skype is very "hungry" for memory, for ex for me: when no apps started i have 15mb free, after IE and other 3-4 apps it's 5-6mb free and still no problems..

lag

Hi
I have my dash on 6.1
and after a while it starts to get laggy or really slow
any ideas what to do?
Off and On again
You can either restart as the phone tends to build up in the amount of programs being opened, or you can always click the tzones button and it will direct you to the task manager where u can close programs to make the phone less laggy...
Install (and then purchase) Celetask. Best darn task manager around and with its 'free memory' tool I can keep my dash at 18MB free program memory all day
You should also get SKTools, clean out the Notification Que once in a while.. that slows down the Dash as well.

Celetask does not need to be purchased as it comes with the new 6.1 rom remade by Ricky... version 24...
i have celetask and free memory but still not running that smooth
there have been times where the phone just locks up and ihave to pull the battery out.
any other ideas why?
running winmo6.1
can be due to the fact that my phone is actively sync to exchange server??

maybe cause it's actively synced to your gayness level, and it overloads the phone
jk, from my experience, whenever i install cabs, my phone ends up slowing down alot faster than a reflash without any cabs. maybe you could reflash and only install the cabs you need?
if not, then try restarting the phone often, cause its like those old computers we used to use back in the day where a restart was almost necessary every day
also, clearing the mass amounts of text messages (and deleting them from the trash) makes my dash faster

Agree just try restarting it once a day as well as clearing up the texts... Also run SKTools in order to clean up and free some bytes... You can find the link to download SKTools below in the programs for smartphone... Just download the lite version okay if you would like... I also have the other version but read the readme file for that version...

Do your Programs Close Automatically?

Come in and discuss
do u guys have the same problem too?
give us a feedback
i use coreplayer to listen to my music.
but when i open a message and the coreplayer is left to play at the background, after a while the coreplayer exits itself. i takes a few seconds after i went into the messaging. or any other programs.
it seems like coreplayer wont run when other programs are running?
any idea on this guys?
Dude I've had that problem with CorePlayer for the last year and a half. It's the only reason I still use WM Player sometimes.
What happens is the program sees that the amount of memory it needs to operate isn't available and simply shuts down. Opera Mini 4.2 does the same exact thing.
It's annoying and the only solution I know of currently is to get a phone with more internal memory.
hmm.. well.. i have some ort of problem with the wm player.. the songs play just for 12 seconds and it will jump to the next song. every music is da same.. wonder whats the problem..
i didnt have problem last time when i was using boogs rom. i had opera mini with coreplayer running and the messaging program on. its basically 3 programs running at the same time. well tat rom had 30meg of free program memory after a fresh boot.
could be something to do with da rom?
well actually the memory is sufficient to run both messaging and coreplayer. theres still 10 megs left but it still shuts down on it own

I run into that with Media Player sometimes also. I have no freaking clue why.
i have the same problem as well sometimes not with coreplayer but pocket tunes or beejive i think typing in the messaging app uses a lot of memory probably also the reason why half the time im waiting for my hermes when im already done waiting to press send
hmm.. seems like.. everyone should have this problem eh.. shud we bring more people in to discuss?
Of course we should. I believe there is a registry fix so programs do not automatically change. I'll do a search in a little bit and see what I find.
Edit:
Appears someone with our beloved Hermes ran into this late 2008. I don't know if this will work in WM 6.5 but we can try. It's the 3rd (last) post in the link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=463388
well im using 6.1. haha.. hopefully it works. trying out now. thanks!
Good. Please give me a detailed map of where you find it in the registry as I'm lost in the maze.
the registry edit needs HTC task manager on.. but im not using it.. im on wktask eh..
well.. i installed HTC task manager now.
the programs dont kill themselves automatically anymore until it reaches below 9mb or memory.
but i couldnt find the registry key there..
the "EnableAutokill" isnt there.
In Advanced Config --> HTC Task Manager --> Auto Kill
Put it to disabled.
It solved the problem for me for years. But I don't know why in the last 6.5 versions I have the same problem with it disable. Or maybe it's another different problem....
did the advanced config thing..
programs dont close on its own already.. good fix eh.

Odds of getting a virus on smartphone?

Well I ask because for the past day or 2 now my phone is constantly freezing. Usually just sending texts. Can anyone help me fix this, or is it a virus? Or what?
What ROM are you using? A hard reset will probably fix it. I've heard viruses exist for smartphones but I've never seen or heard of anyone getting one. Most likely a virus/malware for a phone would be used for information collecting and not to cripple a device, since you could just hard reset or flash a ROM to make it go away. BB's, Androids, and WinMo, all have that feature, I'm sure palm and symbian do too although I've never used those OS's.
Im using the 3vo rom. Up untill a few days ago, it was perfect. I was running aim mobile (not oz) msn, core player, and texting. Now it freezes just reciving a text. I reset it constantly and it never helps. It will be fine again for a while, and then its frozen again. Its really pissing me off.
woah. it the same with meh. just until yesterday i got it bad enough that it froze my phone completely. No hard reset can fix...:C help any one?
Now my phone is going nutz. It starts everytime I start texting. I guess I'll have to try another rom or reformat it.
wait try clearing ur internet cache
Its too late for that. But why would the cache make the texts lag?
memory, n try to delete ur textes that could b one too. n oh wat u mean its too late
I already reformated my phone thinking it was a virus or something. It dawned on me afterwards that I had to have about 50 - 100 texts in thread mode. I think it was just too many texts vs cpu power. ._. i feel so silly.
I'd rule out Virus in the equation, there has only ever been a small amount of Virus's reported for WM and they tended to be like malware rather than to decapitate phone, software can easily cause problems over time things get corrupted etc, very much like your home PC's but far less tools to fix it "often a hard-reset best bet", or even a flash of the stock ROM as even when flashing things can be left the can cause problems in the future.
Regards texts: Should be able to store 1000's without a problem Only time had problems is restoring that amount of texts after a flash tends to make the phone slow.
ClearTemp is good to keep up to date with cleaning you'd be surprised the amount that builds up.
Also keeping as much space as you can on device so only installing programs needed to start up to device and installing other stuff to SD, exception for me is CorePlayer to take the lag off card read "since large data needs to be read at a time"
See you got it sorted Just wanted to leave 2c and may be useful for future
Did u, by any chance, completely drain ur battery and the phone autoswitch off while texting. that happened to me a while ago, and after i restarted texting was never the same, all the incidents ur describing where happening, so i figured out the database got corrupt cause of sudden off. a hard reset fixed it.
ya but wat about my fone? mines is frozen on the start up screen, n i reflashed it tons of times. and i did lots of hard resets but it wont leave that screen....can any one tell me wats going on?
Maybe a virus
I have seen virus infecting nokia phones, and all they do is try to replicate and copy themselves to other cellphones. And in smartphone maybe the same, why dont you try to get a AirScanner AV, for smartphone, maybe that could help. I have the cab, but i cant upload it right now cuz im at work but i can maybe later i will try to share it. take care pal!
Try installing Kaspersky mobile. It´s a 30 day trial, but if there is a virus, it might get detected and cleaned within this 30 day period.
Regards.
wow i nvr had to figure that i had to protect my phone against viruses
LoL this's kinda funny sumtimes windows mobile crashes thats all u had going on hard resets all u can do like you did i bet tho these phones data is all stolen for sure Wifi tho should be safest tho id think anyhows no virus's but im sure theres one two out there but wouldnt really count on it happening lol.

Exactly
As previously stated, wouldn't waiste resources RAM/Battery to run an extra program to find zilch, if really paranoid scan items on desktop before transfer.
In a couple of years time we'll all be running AV's on phones picking up false positives and being baught into the paranoid AV world

The same as on computer a little bit of cleaning will help.

Will upgrading a TMo TP2 to 6.5 get rid of my cprog.exe problems?

Phone is a few days old and pretty much experience the cprog.exe problem every time I get on the net. Does anyone know if upgrading to 6.5 will get rid of that nuisance of should I deal with it before upgrading?
If you flash and install a fresh ROM then you shouldn't have any errors.
If you'd like, you could start by clearing the memory (Hard Reseting) the phone and the message should clear up. But maybe you installed an app that triggered the error so it might come back once you re-install it.
Either way, don't forget to backup your info as it will wipe everything out from contacts to any music and files saved to the main memory, anything in your microSD should fine.
Good luck!

That issue is believed to be caused by programs/apps dragging their feet when closing. If you want to do something about it now before upgrading, you can simply go into settings and disable error reporting...you won't get the messages any more, and everything should still work ok (based on historical evidence). However, since the cause is software-based, flashing to the new ROM should sidestep the issue since you're completely replacing the entire software package, and not messing with it beforehand shouldn't cause it to stick around and haunt you in 6.5.
Thanks guys. I was hoping a ROM replacement would help. Actually, no apps or programs installed yet. All I've done is sync contacts, calendar, notes, to do, and some Word files. Here's hoping 6.5 will work out fine. Thanks again.
