Overide GPRS to Use WiFi Always? - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

Is there a way to do this for the SX66? My internet no longer works since AT&T changed their networks. In order to get internet access again, I was told I needed a new phone *and* new SIM card. Can't afford a new phone right now, so...
I've been reading that there may be a program out there that can allow you to override your phone's settings so that it will *only* search and use WiFi. My phone always looks for GPRS, no matter what I do, so I have been without Internet for some time now.
Can anyone point in the right direction for the correct program for a BA?
Many thanks!

Dash: IE Starts EDGE Connection when WiFi is off

Hello!
I believe I saw a thread that addressed this problem a few weeks ago, but I can't seem to find it now...
If I forget to turn WiFi on when I start IE, my Dash automatically starts to browse using an EDGE or GPRS connection. Is there anyway to disable the unit from using EDGE or GPRS for internet browsing? Or at least make it stop going to EDGE if WiFi is off? I don't have a data plan and don't want to be charged for access.
Thanks!
i also have the same problem and have had to resort to altering the gprs settings so that it cant connect. This is obviously not ideal as I would like to have it working in an emergency etc.
Thanks for any help!!

How did you do this? I have skype mobile installed, but it has a setting that is easy to figure out. Basically i only want to run IE over Wifi.
I'd be interested in a solution for this too. I've been deleting the GPRS settings and only entering them when I need to use it, which is less than once a month.
me too...
I'm in the same situation... is there any software to disable GPRS .. EDGE.. when the WIFI is off??....

Data connection limitation app

Hi,
Does anyone know of any app that restricts data connection to only when in WCDMA (UMTS 3G) network?
Reason why is that i use my Dopod D810 to surf the net and download files. However i have managed to rack up $320 in roaming charges for internet usage even though i am on a 1 GB XSeries plan on 3.
I was not aware that i was roaming at all. So in future, i want my phone to automatically disconnect when "Roaming".
Is there such an app? I have tried Bandswitch but i couldnt get it to do what i wanted.
use search.
There is an app called trinity hacks or something that adds this feature.
Are you sure? I have Trinity Hacks v0.3 and it doesnt seem to have this feature.
What i want is for my phone to automatically disconnect once it is "roaming" onto Telstra's network from the 3 network.
Yes,
Trinity Hacks v0.3 --> Phone tab --> 'Enable GSM/UMTS Band Selection'
Ticking this enables a new tab under 'Settings' --> 'Phone' --> 'Band'
Switch it from 'auto' to 'WCDMA'
Then you will never incur roaming charges on Telstra network.
Yeah i already have that setup.
What i want is to be able to Roam to Telstra so i get full PHONE coverage, but once it goes to roaming, i want the data connection to automatically disconnect.
What you have asked me to do is to permanently connect only to 3G which means i cannot get reception everywhere.
Does that make sense?
What you want is not possible without some serious programming! The Radio stack can be set to connect to GSM, UMTS/WCDMA or either, but you can't split voice and data functionality.
Hi,
Thanks for all your replies, but im not asking for voice and data functionality to be split. The phone can already tell whether it is roaming or on the home network. Isn't it just a matter of getting this information from the phone possibly via the OS API and then when the phone returns a value to signify that its roaming, then the program will disconnect the connection, just like pressing the disconnect button, but this time programmatically?
Im not asking for someone to write something like this, but if something already exist like this.
Maybe this reply is not needed anymore sinds the thread is one month old. Still, I use spb grps monitor. It has a lot of customization option. Maybe it has a feature that will do the trick. I'm not going to look into it myself. Just wanted to give you a headsup.

Automated Data Connection choose with user defined behaviour

Dear all,
since one week I have the TP2 and like it a lot. Until the TP2 I used to have an Iphone3G and now of course I have to change my user behaviour a little bit.
There is one big topic I would like to discuss here: DataConnections!
I have the problem, that I dont have a flat option for data from my provider. I have to pay by time and not by traffic. Hence I like to keep the time I am connected to the Net to a minimum!
Is it possible to realise the following with the TP2 (maybe with extra software)?
1. Mobile data connection only manually with immediate cut off after the transfer (for example if I press send/receive for mail). If I want to manually access the net there should be a short message box asking me to connect. Currently I have to use the CommCenter to switch data connection on/off. As I already use nodata to really cut off the automated connection behaviour, maybe this tool can also be used somehow to allow access and cut it off after the sending/receiving is done.
2. Wifi Scan constantly in the background (after manually switching it on) to scan for open networks or prefered networks. If some network is found, it automatically connects, checks internet, do all the other automated updates and stays connected until I manually disable wifi.
As you can see, I want to have some kind of automated, cost efficient, connection behaviour of TP2. The tool nodata, which I currently use is great to cut off the automated connection but is not very flexible
I am looking forward to exchange with you on that topic.

dvdjimmy
...does really nobody else need something like this? Or am I just too stupid to use the onboard tools of wm6.1 correctly?
Regards,
dvdjimmy
take a look at bandswitch or commmgrpro...
you can use this registry entry,
for example this will kill automatic the connection after 10 seconds,
or if you dont use...
HKLM\Comm\ConnMgr\Planner\Settings\
CacheTime = 10 (sec.)
SuspendResume = GPRS_bye_if_device_off
http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php
Dear all,
thank you for your suggestions. The registry is already a good start for me. Many thx. The commgrpro also looks very good. It seems to allow also the disconnect after a certain amount of time.
Anyway, I think I have to program it on my own: My dream would be to have a software which I can tell that I allow Access to the net from now on. Then the software is switching on wlan in the background and constantly scans for open or prefered networks. If such a network is found I would like to get connected to it. If somehow the WLAN connection breaks down and access to the net is no longer possible, the app should ask if I would like to use UMTS instead of WLAN right now. If I answer yes, WLAN is switched off, the data connection is switched on, the transfer is taking place and afterwards the connection is cut off completely and WLAN is switched on again and hopefully finds another open access again
So the main benefit would be, that automatically only the WLAN is allowed to connect. All the dataconnection by UMTS have to be allowed and are immediately switched off.
I would like to program something like this if you can help me on how to start with it, as I have not programmed a lot for the WM Platform until now.
With best regards,
Joachim

Internet connection

Hi guys,
its time to renew my mobile contract and I would like to have the HTC Desire.
But before getting it, I would like to ask a question.
At home, at university and at my friends home I have internet connection via Wifi, so I figered out I don't need a data option in my contract.
Now the T-Mobile guy told me I absolutely need one, because the cell phone connects with it to download updates.
In a youtube video I saw someone switching to wifi only at the welcome wizard after first power-on.
So, now my question: I'm really most of the time connected with wifi, do I really need data option????
I don't use social networks, so friends steam has no updates, same with the weather!!
Thanks for answers
Technically you don't need a data contract - you can switch off mobile internet and just rely on WiFi.
However, IMHO, if you're going to do that you're probably better off with a dumbphone and an iPod Touch, because you're really not using the phone as it was intended and you're going to get infinitely superior battery life.
Just an opinion - I appreciate that there are plenty of reasons why you might want the Desire regardless!
Regards,
Dave
Ok, thanks...
And yes, there are plenty of reasons.
Whats with vacation? E.g. when I go for two weeks out of my Wifi area?
Will it go online then or wait until I'm in Wifi again?
Btw: In my area there is only Edge available, so even if I wanted I can not use it as it was intended to!
Dennis
If you switch off mobile internet, it won't go online via the a cellular network.
If you want to be really, really, sure that it will never go online via cellular, you can delete the APN (i.e. you are worried you or someone else will turn on mobile internet accidentally).
Regards,
Dave
OK, that is a good idea.
I made that with my very old phone i bought 2003. There you had the option to set more than one APN profile. So i made up an empty one and made it the default one.
So I could switch to the real on in case I really need it.
Maybe you can tell my how to do this in android if you have time?
But thanks so far for your help.
Dennis
You can add the APN in the Phone settings. Not that different from WM
But I only use the Internet connection switch on my desktop.
I can simply switch it off and the phone will never connect to internet via GSM.
Unless someone messes with your phone and turns it on again it is a 100% guarantee that it will never connect via GSM.
I don't bother with APN anymore.

AT&T Tilt2 Won't browse in Aust

I have a new, unlocked Tilt2. It's now connected to Telstra Australia. I can send/receive email (POP3) call anyone and connect to the net via wifi but not through the 3G (Telstra NextG, WCDMA 850Mhz) service. Is the ROM locked to only browse in the USA?
I have tried flashing the unit using one of the available ROM but it just doesn't work. The progress graph just stays stuck at 0% and makes no progress at all.
Any clues?
The Tilt 2 on AT$T requires you to disable the proxy for Wifi and enable it for MediaNet (3G). Could that be your problem?
OK,I'll try that out.
In the mean time I downloaded and installed Opera 5 Mini beta. It works really well on both Wifi and 3G without any settings changed. I'm actually impressed.
That suggests that there is some cobbled together code/lock in the MIE browser that forces it to oerate (or not operate) in a pareticular way. My next step will be to remove that stupid bit of software.
How can I suck out the ROM and do some of my own cobbling/cooking?
How can you add shortcuts to different screens, like the App's folder?
Cheers,
Chris
The OEM Opera and IE do not work on Wifi for me (damn AT$T), so I use Skyfire instead. Much better browser IMO. You can't uninstall anything from ROM, but you can get a cooked ROM with stuff removed. You're in the right place to learn about mods and ROMs, just keep reading and do some searches. This is higher level stuff, so don't jump into it right away.
That's interesting. I have been told by some people in our local Cell Phone store that some imported models have their browser locked to their originatiing carrier when on the 3G/GSM network. That means that mine would not browse except through AT&Ts network.
I have tried re-flashing my unit 5 times with various ROMs but NONE of them work. They all hang with the PC and the Tilt2 at 0% on the progress graph. The software on the PC times out and suggests a way to reboot the Tilt2. I have also tried copying the image on to the MicroSD card and doing a hard bootload start (Hold down the [reduce-volume] button while switching the unit on) but that just resulted in the device sitting there with the word "SERIAL" near the bottom where USB is written when flashing from the PC.
True to it's name. This Tilt2 ST-7377 is a Fortress. I can't get any software into it.
