Hi,
I am new to all this, can somebody guide me how do I get GPS working with local application on like TOM TOM or anything else on my Sprint Touch.
Thanks,
It all depends... Do you have WM6 or WM6.1 on your Touch? If you have WM6, you will first have to at very least update/change the ROM. There are numerous threads here about that, just try a search for it. If you are already running WM6.1 or a replacement ROM that has the GPS enabled, you most likely need to run an application that understands how to access the GPS to "turn it on" (TomTom does not know how to do this). There is a great tool called AstroGPSLauncher that you can get from this board that can do that for you and will then launch TomTom as well. WM and TomTom will need to be configured to use the GPS also but the settings for TomTom can be different depending on the version of TomTom you have. All of the info for this (and MUCH MUCH more) is available on this board, just look around.
Check the GPS section in my thread Touch Tips & Tricks, link in my sig.

First things first, what version of windows do you have on your device?
goto:
start menu\settings\system\about
and tell us what the first line says under "about".
Mine says "Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional"

I have the same version "Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional"
Hmm. 6 Professional, on a brand-new VZW xv6900. Should I be getting an upgrade from somewhere?
Is it possible to run the 3.42.5 bell ROM and still use the GPS function on Sprint?
I don't have a problem using the internet and making phone calls, but GPS won't lock?
Thanks.

GPS in enabled with the new ROM and the program if configured will work with the GPS.
Sorry, but which program do I need to configure?
I set Live Search on COM4 and it never locks on with the Bell Rom.
Thanks

You use the intermediate driver and not any on the com ports, at least that is how I have it working for me.

Sorry about creating another one of these threads, I hate them as much as you but I really need to get GPS working in WM6 or I am going to have to downgrade. The reason I brought my trinity was because of the GPS, without it I may as well use my prophet! No matter what I try I cant get any GPS app to work, not tomtom, not gpsinfo, not pocketstreets, not even google maps!
There is no easily found information on the settings for gps within WM6, so maybe we can put that info here in order to reduce these kind of threads in the future!
If someone could answer this, it would help me and others greatly; What WORKING settings are being used under WM6 for the trinity?????
Com9 115200
Not working for me either... was a SPV m700, now WM6 (lmvd? edition).. google maps says seeking satellites, but none appear. This is right out in the open, where my bt gps unit picks up 4 satellites.
I really need this to work as well

Hardware com9, program put GPD1.
Cheers
Im Using LVSW 2.0.1.1
YEP:
GPS Program Port: GPD1
GPS Hardware Port: COM9
Baud Rate : 115200
Works Great, recep. better then HTC 2005.
GPS Setting
GPS Program Port: GPD1
GPS Hardware Port: COM9
Baud Rate : 4800
If it does not work try a lower baud setting.

And give it some time for the very first fix...
That might take up to 10 minutes or even more...Make sure your Trinity can 'see' the sky, and just wait some more.
This applies only to first fix, after that it should be well under a minute for a 'warm' start
yea but it should be able to see the GPS device right?
using the settings above, tomtom still gives me nothing other than 'No GPS Device' much like the other programs I have tryed. Surely if it was seeing the GPS it would say 'No valid GPS signal' or 'Waiting for valid gps signal'
Have been advised to upgrade to latest version of tomtom which I have and it makes no diffrence.......
PS I cant thank you all enough for your help!

So you do have TomTom 6.03, right?
Better give more information if you want people to help you...
if it says waiting for gps signal it should have found the gps device... MN6 will say "no gps device" if it doesnt find it and "waiting for gps" if it found a device but is waiting for a fix
sorry saminegm your right. Yes I am on the latest version of tom tom 6.030 (bulid 8320) The problem I am having is that all I get is 'No GPS device' when using the settings above.
Right, it gets odder. I've used the settings suggested. Now, when I leave google maps searching for satellites, it seems to crash after a few mins. The screen goes black, and the power button doesn't turn it on. I have to soft reset it.
Try it with lower baud rates? Does this lessen it's power?
Thanks everyone, much appreciated
Tried it all the way down to 9600, no luck. I won't take the phone back until I've tested it with TomTom, though.
I Have now sorted my problem with a reflash of the GSM_1.41.00.11 radio rom on the LVSW thread!
Despite me having done this once before, my radio rom was still the old orange one! reflashed it with GSM_1.41.00.11 and it works a treat!
ChrisFilter I take it you are having a similar problem; try going into system settings and device information. Then make sure your radio version is 1.41.00.11 if its not reflash it with the GSM_1.41.00.11 radio rom and it should sort your problems out!
And once again Thanks your all your help guys!
Already on 1.41.00.11
Maybe I'll try reflashing.. if not, back to f***ing WM5 / Orange
Wahey! On my 7th attempt, with google maps, in my garden, it worked. Impressed.. accurate tracking, could see myself walk round the garden, snazzy! :d

Google maps for WM - It's over and over again....
It is rather misleading - it DOESN'T use any real GPS device on your phone, or any external BT either. It is a pay service instead, which uses provider dependent LBS.

try com 4, rate 9600.
Forgive me if I understood your problem wrongly. While the HD has built-in GPS it is not supplied with any software or app associated with it for navigating or even for displaying coordinates or compass navigation.
Once you download the Google Maps (which also supports, for some countries the street map display) application onto your device, it will make use of the GPS and show you your position, with moving map display as you drive, quite smoothly and accurately. It will also show your approximate position indoors without GPS (using A-GPS and the cell site ID supporting LBS).
For point to point navigation and voice prompts guess one has to use 3rd party app like Garmin XT, TomTom; but I have not used these.

yes but in the software or in the hardware field?
You need to state what software you are using. If its Google maps just let Windows manage the GPS.
Why doesn't the GPS Photo work. It says that GPS is not active or something. What's up with that?

Thank you, but it doesn't work so!!! What's wrong???
I had the same problem, no one can't help me. Any gps software I used couldn`t find gps reciver, I've tried any combinations with COM ports....nothing. After 1 month and about 10 gps software I removed SIM card....and BINGO!!!! My old SIM card generate problem that nothing can find built-in gps reciver in my Touch HD. Try without SIM card and if it works go to operator and replace to new SIM card
Endow
Not at all
Sorry about this, but your tips does'nt help me:
I removed the SIMcard but the GPS in GOOGLEMAP didn't work anyway!
I tried to let it be managed by windows and to set it on COM4 with 9600bauds but no options succeded!
I can't understand what's wrong!!!
Another thing
Furthermore, when I set up the GPS-params in the params-application of windows mobile 6, the hard port (COM4) I chose isn't recorded by the software!!!
Maybe it's a hint for the answer?
Help me, geeks of HTC!
go to google and download the lastest ver. google map.
try to go to a window or a open space and turn on the google map. press option and try to click use gps , and see any reading on the top right of the map screen.
dont need to adjust any com 4,5,6 things.
once you got a lock on gps. you can close the google map and start to look out for third party nav software. try it.
Mine works perfectly fast at
COM: 4
BAUD: 57600
Im using iGuidance 2009
does ur phone need to go online when activating the gps? my car's gps doesnt need online yet the device can detect its location. however when i use google map, the phone just went online and try to search for my location. not too ideal as i have to pay for every kb sent/recieved.
Ooo
Maybe I will try to refresh the GPRSSettings with the soft designed for it!
I will reply when I'll know further about it...
Mine shows correct location when I set port - Com4 and BAUD: 57600 on Google maps for just a second. Then it jumps to some other continent and says GPS not available and shows the help dialog. Allowing windows to manage gps also gives same results what am i doing wrong?? or is it a limitation of blackstone/google maps app..
Reply
I've tryed what you done but it didn't succeded!
In the GMaps List I see: "COM4:" and there is nothing after the ":" !
When I confirm this update, the soft tell me that he can't found a device on this COM!!!
ok, my settings, com4, bd 4800, let windows manage (which kinda negates any settings before hand) Google maps set to let windows manage. My GPS locks well and always finds plenty of satalites, so i dont understand why you guys are having problems.
Howver, on my polaris with cooked rom, my google maps does misbeahve sometimes when the gps is locked and the map will suddenly say im in hong kong when im in the uk!! (i even unistalled google that was included in rom and downloaded new version from google)
So i believe in my limited wisdom that its probably a rom issue (radio more likely).
What i do have to decide is if the official 1.56 rom is worth flashing or not (still on 1.14)
What you guys think?
Reply
I'm not sure to understand you because I come from Switzerland and I main speek French.
YOu think that it is a ROM version's problem? Which one should I install? (and how to do it ?)
Thanks so much!
P.S.: I don't have changed any ROM or Radio Version in this HTC Touch HD!
I have never fiddled with ROM but I have same issue. google maps jumps continent!! momentarily despite 7 satellites. May be an issue with Google maps itself??

Hello Guys,
I manage to upgrade Vogue to WM6.1 + GPS.
When I run Google Maps it work fine. Show me exactly where I am.
When I run TomTom from AstroGPSLauncher, the TomTom showed me that it found 7 satellites.
But I do NOT see the road.
When I try to enter direction I get an error message related to the GPS data.
It is as if the GPS data is wrong. I think TomTom try to put me in a different part of the world and its completely confused.
Any Idea what I did wrong?
Thanks.

You forgot to tell us what version of TT and what map you are using!
It's unlikely to be a hardware or rom problem otherwise Google Maps would not work.
-GT
I'm using version 7.45 .
Today I also installed it on my friends phone (HTC Touch Sprint) and it was working OK.
So the TomTom version is OK, the Vogue work OK with GoogleMaps and MS Live.
What can be the reason that TomTom GPS is confused on my machine?
I also installed GPS Tuner and I saw the same problem:
The location jump all the time. Sometimes it put in in China...
Very strange....
Can someone think about something I did wrong???
Hi,
I signed up a touch HD with orange UK yesterday. The first thing I did was to install TOMTOM on the machine. However, TOMTOM kept reporting no GPS device. If it finds the internal GPS receiver, then it is 20 minutes later. One thing I notice is that when TOMTOM is looking for the GPS receiver, there is something trying to connect to the internet.
I am sure I did everthing right as I was using this copy of tomtom on the touch diamond and it worked like a treat.
Did orange do anything to the GPS so people can only use their stupid orange map? If they did, is there any way that I can get the tomtom working?
Many thanks in advance.
Thank you for all your advice and the problem has been solved. Here are a few tips for people who have the same problem.
1. A-GPS can only make things worse, switch it off.
2. Update your quick-GPS data.
3. It seems that tomtom struggles to find GPS device on certain orange handset. If you are the unlucky one, try change your hand set with orange. If you don’t want to go through the trouble, open google map to locate satellite before open tomtom.
4. Debrand the handset.
5. Orange’s customer service is crap, stay away if you can
Have you tried updating QuickGPS in the programmes.
Also check A-GPS is disabled in windows settings.

Thanks, I have updated the quickGPS the first thing. I have the a-gps enabled, though it could help to locate the satallite.
I think it is recomended to be disabled.
Perhaps try it if you have not.
GPS always worked fine for me with the stock Orange ROM, that was with 1.14 though, I think they come with 1.19 now, it also works fine with all of the cooked ROMs I've tested. Perhaps the version of TomTom you have isn't fully compatible with the HD (I did notice you said it worked on the Diamond, but perhaps there's a hardware/software difference on the HD which stops it working.

Thanks all for your help. Disable A-GPS seems hlep a lot. I will try again today.
By the way, UK orange's customer service is what I call crap. I called them about the GPS last night and a idiot tell me that as far as I can make phone calls, my phone is fine.

Don’t blame them, that is way we are here.
My tomtom version is 7.915.9196, with latest UK and Ireland map v830.2307
but unfortunately it doesn’t support 7 point postcode system just accept 4 digit post code and in order to find the address you actually need to know name of the street as well. But I have iGO with 7PPC which it is fantastic.

thanks for telling me.
ok now for everyone which already had tomtom without 7 digit postcode, do as I listed here:
01- Downloaded the file
www.tomtom.com/updates/great_britainpostal_all.zip
02- copy it into new folder (folder's name doesn't matter)
03- extract it.
04- click on setup.exe
05- choose "i agree" then click next.
06- choose Pocket PC (Windows CE)
07- choose install Tom Tom Great Britin Postcode then click next.
08- choose other location (Advanced)
09- choose Folder on the computer
10- select any folder you want
the software will generate a zip folder
after getting the zip folder move it to your SD card's Root
start TOM TOM you will be able to do a full 7 digit postcode search.

it shouldn't be like that, when I had Stock ROM on my HD I used to had similar problem beside long waiting time before tomtom finds signal (about 15 ~ 20s) but after flashing HD with Custom ROM every problem is gone, now it finds signal in less than 5 second

Hi, I see some threads that suggest TomTom 7 can be installed on a Touch Pro 2. I bought TomTom 7 on micro SD and it won't run. I get a message "Your device is not compatible with this version of TomTom NAVIGATOR!" Is there something simple that I am missing that is causing this. TomTom support were no help.
Offtopic: Why not ask your question in one of the threads you have found
Ontopic: Officially the TP2 is not supported at this moment. It will work, just ask Google
Hi PGLion.
I started a new thread because none of the other threads were actually about TomTom7 on the TP2, they just gave me hope!
On the ask Google suggestion, I may be a bit slow, but I have not found anything that helps me. If you have a link that you think will help, I'd be very grateful if you could post it.

yes,
try >"7.910" "(9196)"< as search terms in google.
before installing that version you should also chek the reports of other users stating that after installation bluetooth stopped working.
You want "ttn7.915.9196.vga_black.cab"
Works fine.
In fact a quick google takes us to this very site:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=482075
Bluetooth still working fine for me.
Yes, TomTom7 DOES work on TouchPro2. I use it almost daily. It's very nice.
But it DOES cripple bluetooth (at least the build that I'm using). It replaces a couple of bluetooth drivers in your Windows directory that are incompatable (or so it appears).
If anyone's having issues with this, PM me. I'll find the thread (I think it was at PPCGeeks) that has instructions re: fixing it.

i too can confirm that TT7 works on TP2, might be best you use a software called cabinstl to install the cab file to your required location
The biggest problem I'm having is some serious GPS lag on my Verizon Touch Pro2 running TomTom (I've tried v6 and v7).
TOMTOM 7 install issues on Tilt 2
Has anyone had problems with the install going automatically to the device and not having enough memory to run?
Mine works, but I have a few issues. The physical keyboard doesn't work correctly (when I type, I get multiple non-english characters entered, but the on-screen keyboard is fine). The keyboard on my previous Tilt (original) worked fine with TT6. It also appears that there's no GPS: it shows reception of 0 satellites, yet it works fine. Seems way to accurate to be getting position from cell phone triangulation. Also, I'm using the "black VGA" map, but there appears to be an issue with POIs. Gas stations were shown on screen in completely undeveloped areas. Fortunately, I wasn't looking for gas.
TT7 (V7.915) working OK on my stock UK Vodafone (WM6.1) TP2 with no major lag or loss of any other features. Gets a lock fairly quickly (10-30 seconds).
Custom POIs are accurate and as expected.
Satellite reporting is behaving itself.
Hardware keyboard: Worked fine first go, then started printing double/foreign characters (eg: A gave A+A(Umlaut)), then back to OK after I went into soft keyboard settings and re-selected English. Exited TT, came back in and hardware keyboard seems OK still.
The only major issue I have is that TT sometimes crashes while loading ("We're sorry..." Windows error screen) and I have to turn the phone off/on to get TT going again.
Edit:
