More AT&T Tilt on T-mobile Questions - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Hello all. I'm new to this forum. I am thinking of leaving Sprint for T-Mobile, since T-Mobile doesn't penalize you for using their WM phones as a modem. I was interested in getting the Wing from TM, but the hardware seems to be lacking, especially when compared to the Tilt. It seems possible, after reading numerous posts on here, that the Tilt can be unlocked so that it may work on the T-Mobile network. My question is this: How crippled would the Tilt be if unlocked and used on T-Mobile? Which features, exactly, would I lose? Thanks to all who reply.

I use a Tilt on T-Mobile and it works great. After a clear storage simply reset before it does the AT&T customization and other than a few things it is not screaming AT&T.
Feature wise I am able to take advantange of everything T-Mobile has to offer so no worries there. I still have a Wing (which my wife is now using) and there is no comparison when it comes to performance. The Tilt is everything I wanted my Wing to be.

Thanks for the reply. I'm mostly interested in using the tilt as a modem. From what I've been reading, the Tilt won't be able to take advantage of T-Mobile's limited 3G, but oh well. My biggest problem, then, will be getting the phone without committing to to AT&T. I'll probably have to buy the phone outright.

this is by far the best phone you can own for T-mobile, once you look around this forum and personalize your tilt it is far far better than the wing, i bought my phone used and then used the sim unlocker found here to use it for t-mobile, all programs that i have DL work, some need some minor tweaks, but if you look around xda forums you will find all the information you need and them some, i have had problems using the phone as a modem because i dont have a true data plan, i use the 5.99 plan, but the unlimited data plan is only 19.99 and i have read posts about other people using the tilt as a modem using the 19.99 plan, the only con is no 3g. I love my tilt and i love using it with tmobile you can't beat 5.99 a month!!

I don't have a tilt but a hermes...I have the $20 tmob plan and use internet sharing with my pc all day every day! Works great...

Stay with the Dash??? Opinions wanted

Sorry if this is not the best place to post this...I'm sure it will be moved if necessary.
Currently with TMobile (my Dash) and also AT&T (wife's phone).
Dash with WM5...I hated it.
Dash with WM6.1, I love it.
We'll be going to one mobile provider, looks like it will be AT&T. They have the Tilt, MotoQ, Treo750, Blackberry, etc...
Does anyone in this section actually use any of those phones? If so, do you prefer it over the Dash? Are the software upgrade capabilities basically the same? It will be used on AT&T network, I skimmed their sections in this forum but at first glance they didn't seem as "user friendly" or easy to upgrade as the Dash.
Gotta say, the Tilt looks mighty cool...

If you don't want to change phones, the dash will work with att. If you're ready for a change, I would stick with a htc phone if I was you. Then you get all the support you need here at xda, and tons of modifications available. The moto q I believe has gps, but otherwise is very similiar to dash, same story with blackjack II. I'm not sure if att has a working 6.1 available for the q yet though. The tilt looks good to me also, in fact I just bought one off ebay thats due to be delivered tomorrow. After using other brands of phones though, I wouldn't pick anything other than htc and windows mobile. Of course, this is just my 2 cents worth.
I think tha tilt is a great phone and the fact that you can still come here and get all the info you want about them. The dash as stated above will work on att just no 3g. What i would do is keep the dash untill you actually make a decision. if im right you do not need to buy a handset from att tell them you have your own they will keep you upgrade on file so if you do buy a phone it will be at 2yr pricing. wait untill you actually decide on what you want and then make the jump.

Questions: Unlock Verizon Xv6900 to Sprint? will GPS work? 3G?

Hello all,
i have a Verizon xv6900 and i was wondering if i could unlock it and use it on the Sprint network. if so how do i do this? i have unlocked a few other phones and i am very proficient with hacking windows mobile phones and such so if i had a guide of some sort i am positive i could do it.
second question is weather i would still be able to use the GPS. i have hacked my GPS to work with Verizon and i love it, i don't want to lose it if i go to Sprint. also does sprint offer 3G speeds? i get excellent speeds with Verizon here in Utah.

Dont watch much TV or visit Sprint.com much do you?? LOL just kidding
Yes, 3G is offered through Sprint its their major advertising push to be honest
If your phone is compatible with Sprint (which it is) you will have GPS and aGPS moving over to Sprint

So wait, If I bought a sprint Touch could I unlock it and Activate it on verizon? Is it possible to do the same with a sprint Touch Pro? I was told it wouldn't work because of the ESNs. I'm just wondering because the Sprint (CDMA) touch pro has more ram than the verizon verzion!!!
Sounds great! i figured i could do it. and no, i dont really watch TV. my mind gets bored with it rather quickly, to be honest i havent had a TV for about 5 years until just about 2 weeks ago i got a new 46" sony lcd for under $100, so now i may start watching a bit, who knows.
anyways, if you could help me figure out what needs to be done to get it activated with sprint that would be great.

that is correct: NO it won't work... you cannot activate a Sprint Touch on Verizon or vice-versa, because they won't be in each other's ESN database.
seems hardly worth it to contemplate trying to get it to work... all you really have to do is to sell the Sprint phone and buy a Verizon one... minimal lossage and big savings in time and frustration... (more ram not withstanding)
you *could* probably activate a Sprint Touch on PagePlus, a Verizon MVNO... see hofo for details...

HTC Tilt 8925 phone on eBay

Right now I am using a basic Nokia 6030. If I buy an HTC Tilt 8925 off of eBay, do I have to buy the data plan from AT&T even if it is unlocked?
How does have anything to do with Touch Pro 2 ROM development?
I have no idea, sorry!
Thread moved.
To answer your question, from what I've read and heard, yes. However, if you have an unlocked device (non-AT&T branded phone) then you won't.
Would there be any chance I could know how I can unlock the 8925?
Even if you unlock the Tilt 2, it's still an AT&T branded phone. They'd recognize your IMEI number as such and force the data plan on you. The only way around this would be to either import an unlocked TP2, or use an unlocked TP2 from another US carrier. An important issue you'd have with an unlocked US TP2 is that it wouldn't be compatible with AT&T's 3g data band, so your data speeds would be stuck on EDGE.
EDIT: I should also mention that in your particular situation (since you don't want data on the phone), using an unlocked TP2 from the US would be ideal. The reason being is that it will be much cheaper than importing an unlocked phone from overseas. I suppose my initial explanation was more geared to try and clarify the general subject.
If using any TP2 it would most likely be recognised by ATT and be charged the data plan. See Hofo Nexus One thread for more details. Also some may not work on ATT 3G, for example TMO TP2 will not work with ATT 3G.

If it's got the 8925 branding that's specifically the AT&T version. Still not the TP2/Tilt2 though is it? Thought 8925 was the Kaiser.
The 8925 is the unofficial name of the original Tilt (Kaiser). The only place it is used is under the battery cover. It isn't called 8925 in any manuals or other official texts.
The bottom line is if ATT sells it and even if you buy a EUR version then ATT will probably still recognize the phone. They are getting smarter.
I have a code on one of my lines exempting me from the mandatory data plan since I had an HTC on that line before the rule came out, but my wife's line got dinged for this about a month ago, since then I changed to a dumb phone for her and removed the data. If I was to loose my exemption I would go to TMO.
OP, you want to post to the forum below, not the Tilt2 forum:

I currently have a Tilt 2 (from Ebay), prior it was a Kaiser (Tilt from AT&T), and before that a Blue Angel (Siemens SX66 from AT&T).
I was forced to get the PDA data plan when I got my Kaiser from them. I later told them it suffered an untimely death, switched to a flip phone, and changed the internet over to the smaller package. I put my sim back into my Kaiser and internet is working fine, I am still being charged the smaller package, and my phone comes up as the Blue Angel when I log into their web. LOL!
The only way around NOT getting the PDA plan is to NOT get the PDA from them (they've made it now mandatory). I've noticed that now they also made it mandatory to get the smaller internet/messaging package, if you get a phone from them that has a keyboard (either virtual or hard), regardless of whether you even want it. Not really the best incentive to get someone to commit to your plan or buy a device from them, is it? I'm thinking when my contract expires that I'll simply upgrade my phones on my own and keep paying the same for my service WITHOUT committing to another 2-year contract.
Getting a free or reduced price phone is just not worth spending that exorbitant amount on internet for 2 years.

Yes, but that is not a guarantee anymore. ATT has on few and increasingly occasions been able to tell if you are using a non-branded HTC or the ATT version. You may also a grandfather clause on your line (ATT lists that as "Smartphone exclusion" under the included feature section of OLAM and my line has this as well. They will and by experience send a SMS and automatically change your data plan higher if they catch you with a PDA. If I knew an insider at ATT I would try to get the "Smartphone exclusion" on all my lines but unless you have connections......SOL. But at least my Tilt 2 is on the $10/unlim plan
Yeah, I may be grandfathered, since I've been with them so long, and I changed over to the $15 unlimited plan about 1.5 years ago. Now, things may simply not be that... well, simple.
Which is why I think I'm not going to go through the process of re-committing for another contract when this one is up (and continue to pay month by month), so they don't "catch" me down the road.

one x on go phone plan?

im in a werid situation. the only phone i want is the htc one x. my plan expires the 26th of this month and i dont know what to do the phone comes out may 6th. heres the deal my dad is making me pay my line by myself so he will give the original family plan line to my little brother. so with his upgrade i intend to buy the one x and use the 50$ unlimited plan from their go phone options
will everything work ? the guy told me data wont work on 4g phones. and will a go phone sim even work on a smart phone ? i really want all this to work out because i need a nice screen and camera but do not want a contract. what other options should i look at because even atnt contracts minimum is close to 80 bucks !
are you talking about using an international one x? i decided on a prepaid plan and it works - but i bought an at&t branded micro-sim card from amazon. others are cutting down at&t sim cards. some are transferring micro-sims from unlocked iphones. there are people posting on the boards that the $50/month plan works for them - you just have to be careful about not drawing attention to yourself by your data usage. i am a minimal user so i went for the $2/day when used only plan (i am on personal wi-fi most of the time) and bought a data package.
you should also be aware that carriers like straight talk and net10 are offering $45-$50/month unlimited plans with purchase of their micro-sim cards. you can find out which network they run off in your area - they all use the towers of the larger phone companies.
check out some of the threads in the general forum as well as this one mentioning at&t. may help you. just be aware that having an international htc could mean no access to certain apps. it seems, for example, that google wallet will install but not open (at this time) on an unrooted international one x. could be a function of at&t, but i think it's google. found a way around that for google voice, but not for wallet. don't know if google wallet will install and open on an unrooted phone.
thanks for all the info. i was able to see h20 works in my area. im not buying the international version this is straight up the may 6th atnt released version. thats why im curious how am i going to keep the same number yet somehow use call sms and minimal data. i too am on wifi a lot but i def need 3g for work and gps. im just worried about getting a micro sim card and im hearing a lot of people getting cut off data on atnt once they found out their using a smart phone
also sucks to be buying an lte phone and no lte available lol
would this work ? what kind of speeds are on it
http://www.shopstraighttalk.com/bpd...ction=view&productVariantExtensionId=13837291
there are a couple of people on these boards who are longtime at&t users and know far more about the ins and outs. you might try searching them out in the at&t-related threads in the one lx forum, since you are planning to buy, i gather, an at&t phone. better to know ahead of time what you can and can't do. it may still be worth your while to check out straight talk and net10, however, since the last i looked they were advertising programs for at&t gsm phones that claim to be unlimited for $50/month. no lte, obviously, but also possibly no hassle over a separate data package, though they are making it clear they will pull your account if you go over their "unlimited" limit.
alright i searched around a lot and straight talk does use atnt towers so that may be my best bet i just need someone to help me confirm that if i buy the atnt one x should i let them install a sim card in it ? will it even matter? as soon as i get home i would take that phone out and put in my prepaid one. does atnt prepaid not let u use data anymore for 4g phones? lol so confusing
check out howard forums re at&t prepaid and also straight talk. i got into at&t recently. apparently there have been some policy changes that i wouldn't have noticed since i am not a long time user. one of them applies to smartphone data usage limitations - as in, you have to buy a data package if on one. there are a couple of people on these boards claiming they are using data without a data package on their smartphones and it's a matter of not triggering usage limitations. i have no way of knowing and it's confusing to me, too, so i'm just sticking with what i have till i run into a wall, then i may jump to net10 or straight talk also.

I am waiting for the Nexus 4 to get back in stock. Going to run the BYOP Straight Talk plan on it. :good:
funny thing is that if you ask that question on a Dinc forum where people are still actively using and developing for the Dinc, the correct answer should be......another Dinc! lots of used ones on eBay for under 60$. Unlocked, Rooted, overclocked and running a better OS than Stock plus EXT4 fix makes this device still a usable device today.
but on a more serious note, me using the Dinc is tied into a couple of factors-that I am on Verizon and probably staying that way but might go to one of it;s derivatives like Pageplus Cellular. this keeps me in the CDMA/3G world for the time being so any replacement would have to be compatible.
seems like this question gets asked alot-what are some 3G VZW compatible phones out there? can you take a VZW phone and bring it to Straighttalk as easy as you can with Pageplus Cellular?

I am currently on Pageplus and don't have any complaints. I have looked around for a newer CDMA phone and the prices are crazy. The Nexus 4 is the best deal I have seen but I will have to switch to Straight Talk as it is GSM only. I don't think there is an option on Straight Talk to bring your own CDMA phone.
yes, that is my understanding on Straighttalk as well-they support sprint CDMA phones with some flashing or modification but it;s not easy. They want to push everyone to GSM.
So do you have a Dinc on pageplus? how is that working? was there any complications with getting it working on their service?

Pageplus has been problem free for me. The website can occasionally be a pain to deal with when purchasing more minutes is my only complaint. The Dinc was a breeze to port and everything worked without any setup. If you need any info on Pageplus, go to http://www.howardforums.com/ and look up Pageplus. They have lots of info.
I have two Dinc's on Page Plus currently, no problems at all, OTA programming was all that was needed. I've activated a bunch of phones on PP over the years, for myself and for friends, and compared to the hacking you used to have to do on 'feature phones' to get WAP access working, Dincs are super easy. I've also done a few Droid X's and a Droid X2, also with no issues. Currently, newer phones, in addition to being quite expensive, are also 4G, which makes them a pain to activate on PP and usually requires some significant hacking. Definitely do your homework before buying a 4G phone with plans of activating it on PP.
It depends on your plans. If you plan on sticking with Verizon you could go with the Samsung GS3 or the Note 2 (I think Verizon has the Note 2). If large screens aren't your thing you can go with the HTC Incredible 4G or Motorola Razer M.
Sent from my Nexus 4
just switched my GF feature phone on Pageplus Cellular to a Dinc I bought on eBay running CM10.1. happened easier than I expected as I was able to do everything via live chat without holding forever on the phone. text messaging seems to work including notifications. have it on the TNT 1200 plan, lets see if that will work for a month.
