Stay with the Dash??? Opinions wanted - HTC Excalibur

Sorry if this is not the best place to post this...I'm sure it will be moved if necessary.
Currently with TMobile (my Dash) and also AT&T (wife's phone).
Dash with WM5...I hated it.
Dash with WM6.1, I love it.
We'll be going to one mobile provider, looks like it will be AT&T. They have the Tilt, MotoQ, Treo750, Blackberry, etc...
Does anyone in this section actually use any of those phones? If so, do you prefer it over the Dash? Are the software upgrade capabilities basically the same? It will be used on AT&T network, I skimmed their sections in this forum but at first glance they didn't seem as "user friendly" or easy to upgrade as the Dash.
Gotta say, the Tilt looks mighty cool...

If you don't want to change phones, the dash will work with att. If you're ready for a change, I would stick with a htc phone if I was you. Then you get all the support you need here at xda, and tons of modifications available. The moto q I believe has gps, but otherwise is very similiar to dash, same story with blackjack II. I'm not sure if att has a working 6.1 available for the q yet though. The tilt looks good to me also, in fact I just bought one off ebay thats due to be delivered tomorrow. After using other brands of phones though, I wouldn't pick anything other than htc and windows mobile. Of course, this is just my 2 cents worth.

I think tha tilt is a great phone and the fact that you can still come here and get all the info you want about them. The dash as stated above will work on att just no 3g. What i would do is keep the dash untill you actually make a decision. if im right you do not need to buy a handset from att tell them you have your own they will keep you upgrade on file so if you do buy a phone it will be at 2yr pricing. wait untill you actually decide on what you want and then make the jump.

More AT&T Tilt on T-mobile Questions

Hello all. I'm new to this forum. I am thinking of leaving Sprint for T-Mobile, since T-Mobile doesn't penalize you for using their WM phones as a modem. I was interested in getting the Wing from TM, but the hardware seems to be lacking, especially when compared to the Tilt. It seems possible, after reading numerous posts on here, that the Tilt can be unlocked so that it may work on the T-Mobile network. My question is this: How crippled would the Tilt be if unlocked and used on T-Mobile? Which features, exactly, would I lose? Thanks to all who reply.
I use a Tilt on T-Mobile and it works great. After a clear storage simply reset before it does the AT&T customization and other than a few things it is not screaming AT&T.
Feature wise I am able to take advantange of everything T-Mobile has to offer so no worries there. I still have a Wing (which my wife is now using) and there is no comparison when it comes to performance. The Tilt is everything I wanted my Wing to be.
Thanks for the reply. I'm mostly interested in using the tilt as a modem. From what I've been reading, the Tilt won't be able to take advantage of T-Mobile's limited 3G, but oh well. My biggest problem, then, will be getting the phone without committing to to AT&T. I'll probably have to buy the phone outright.

this is by far the best phone you can own for T-mobile, once you look around this forum and personalize your tilt it is far far better than the wing, i bought my phone used and then used the sim unlocker found here to use it for t-mobile, all programs that i have DL work, some need some minor tweaks, but if you look around xda forums you will find all the information you need and them some, i have had problems using the phone as a modem because i dont have a true data plan, i use the 5.99 plan, but the unlimited data plan is only 19.99 and i have read posts about other people using the tilt as a modem using the 19.99 plan, the only con is no 3g. I love my tilt and i love using it with tmobile you can't beat 5.99 a month!!
I don't have a tilt but a hermes...I have the $20 tmob plan and use internet sharing with my pc all day every day! Works great...

Can I put Kavanna 6.1 on a Moto Q Global?

Or is it exclusive to the Excalibur?
Im going to be switching to AT&T in a few weeks and also unlockng my Dash. Im moving to an area where T-mo has no service. So it either VZW or AT&T. Im not ready to part with Kavanna and WinMo phones. I really like the look and specs of the Q (so far, havent had a hands on yet). If not Ill probly just get a Bold or a Curve and use the dash whenever.

Verizon Version of the HTC Touch 2 Questions

I currently have an iPhone 3Gs which I like but the Touch2 is looking pretty nice. I'm thinking of leaving AT&T and going with the Touch2 using Verizon. Most of the ROMs I have seen here are for T-Mobile, my question is - can they be used on a Verizon phone? I have a couple of more questions if you don't mind:
1. Since I may be getting a new Touch2 - would it be wise to upgrade WM6.1 to 6.5 right off the bat - before even adding contacts, etc?
2. Can the Verizon version be update to 6.5 and is it safe and stable?
3. Which ROM would you recommend using? I'd rather have speed than 'pretty'.
I'm new to this and did not even know ROMs were available since the iPhone does not use one.
Thanks all,
MasterJack
BTW, I did a search for Verizon but not much came up.
1. No 6.5 for VZ out yet
2. Once 6.5 is officially released or HSPL becomes available
3. No HSPL out for VZ yet, so no custom ROMs
Bummer - sounds like I'm S.O.L. for now - maybe I'll just keep my iPhone until 6.5 and ROMs are available..... thank you.
you will be able to update it to 6.5 and use custom roms eventually, but not yet. just install windows phone on the phone and sync your contacts with it and when you instal a new rom you can sync them back onto the phone, pictures, ringtones, anything you put in their info. also, check sprint a lot cheaper monly plan, with the lowest minutes its $70/month on verizon (they make you get data). The Sprint Touch Pro2 should be around the T-Mobile ($150) / Verizon ($200) price range when its for sale in stores (10/11) and online through other retailers.
btw, some guy on my local craigslist will give u his tmobile touch pro2 for ur iphone if ur near chicago.

Thanks for your reply. I have never checked out Sprint - how is their coverage compared to Verizon? How does the TP2 Sprint compare to the TP2 Verizoin - hardware-wise?
Hardware wise they are the same. As for coverage, go to each of their sites and click "coverage map". There is a link right on their front pages.
How about the AT&T version due out soon - would it be wise to wait for that one or go with Verizon's version? Will AT&T's version be any better?

There is speculation that the AT&T version will ship with WM 6.5... Other then that, the only real difference is in the Carrier. Verizon is CDMA - mostly North America Service - Has an international option for GSM. AT&T will be GSM standard and will also allow for custom ROM's...
I have used Verizon and AT&T for work and Verizon seems like the better network in the US. I am personally waiting for the AT&T version.. (Same carrier I am on now.)
Why the desire for 6.5 so bad? Not much is different.
The stock ROM on the Verizon version is surprisingly good. Unless there is earth shattering improvements I doubt I'll flash it at this point.
No matter what, out of the box, this phone blows the iphone away!
Just finally took a look at one today at a T-Mobile store. Very nice unit - not as reponsive as my iPhone but it makes up in many other areas. I just saw that AT&T will have one soon - what's the advantage of that one over let's say Verizon? I just got my 3Gs a couple of months ago so I would have to break my contract with AT&T to get one - weather I get one from them (just break it and re-sign up if I can) or go with Verizon. My thought is that Verizon has better coverage here in Houston.
What about the Samsung Omnia II - seems very nice - which carriers will carry it?
Thx,
MasterJack

Agreed, with GPS working and the stock ROM running well (for me) I'll wait for official 6.5 (as it is better than the HTC TouchFlo interface IMO). Though I am sure once it is cracked I won't be able to resist, but it is saying something that that I am not dying to upgrade it. As an old Touch and Touch Pro user this stock experience isn't even in the same league.
So if I go with the Verizon version - you recommend no changing anything? Just leave it alone until 6.5 comes out?
What's good site to learn about what's new with 6.5 as it relates to this phone?
Thx,
MasterJack

You really don't have a choice with the Version Phone.. You can not add new ROM's until somene creates a HARD SPL for the CDMA phones. Once that is created, it provides the ability to make changes to the base OS.
I really dont like AT&T. I have gone back to them on 2 different occasions and left becuase of the same issues. There are days where they work great. There are other days where in areas you had full signal in, you will drop a call or be searching for service. AT&T's network just isnt as mature as Verizons. I have traveled all over the US for work and verizon is always the best.
One thing i am going to add....The only thing that is nice about AT&T is there handset freedom. But they are even managing to take that away from there clients.
I agree on the service area... Verizon's network is the best in the US...
I have moved my company to AT&T for two reasons... They used to get hardware out before anyone else (Tilt) and I can use the phones in Europe and Mexico with out issue. (Verizon works in Mexico but is expensive).
this is out for verizon right? i got it for tmobile and i love it so since my gf is looking for a new phone i will recommend it even tho she wants a black berry

Sprint Phone To Work With AT&T

Hello,
thankyou for taking the time out to read this.. i have a question, I have an htc FUZE (touch pro) flashed with energy rom leo and my girlfriend has the htc Tilt 2 (touch pro 2) flashed with energy rom leo. oops that totally besides the point.lol just wanted to brag a lil anyways my friend came across a touch pro 2 from a barber, he held on to it for a few days before he decided to call sprint and activate it.. so when he does the phone is reported lost or stolen and he cant do anything with it, or can he? im thinking if i can take it off his hands and unlock the SIM can i use it? its a sprint branded htc touch pro..or is it a paperweight now?
Thanks in advance.
Mike V
I think you can if you sim unlock it and also even then you still cant use 3g speeds but can use the edge
Man I hope theres a way. if so i know he'll sell it to me CHEAP anyone know what to try? or point me in the right direction? im looking at SIM unlockers? am i warm or cold?
If I am not mistaken the Sprint version of the touch pro does not have a sim card,( I may be wrong ) and if that is the case then no it cant be used on a sim card based network.
Was not gonna say it but.....Not the right section. This really doesnt have anything to do with rom development.
actually it does have a sim card i seen underne
HTML:
ath the battery compartment already and i see a white sim looking card in there. ill see the phone in a few hours ill take a pic n post it up. also sorry will a moderator please move this to the correct forum.

i just got sprint touch pro. i use att carrier, is it possible to unlock touch pro to be used with att.
sprint is cdma, while att is gsm. can it be swapped? that is use sim card of att on sprint’s htc touch pro?
would appreciate if you could throw some light on this.
thanks

http://eliteeternity.com/elite-tuto...-sprint-touch-pro-to-mighty-rom/#comment-1743 Mike,
No. That is IMPOSSIBLE. There are GSM, and CDMA Phones. There are also hybrids with both GSM and CDMA. (the touch pro 2 will be hybrid)
The Sprint Touch Pro does NOT have a SIM card slot, and the GSM version does. Sorry Mike, but you’re screwed.
This is the very reason CDMA folks want an iPhone or something similar so bad. Because you can jailbreak an ipod (see fluffyphones.com if you want to) and use with AT&T or T-Mobile. But not Verizon or Sprint.
Sim Card Slot In CDMA Phones
The Sim Slot on your Sprint phone is for Contact use. The Sim Slots in CDMA Phones are for storing Contact Information Only.
Dammit i was hoping it would work, o well ill just have to wait and shell out the cash for the tilt 2. thankyou everyone.
I think the OP is saying that his friend found a TP2 (NOT a Touch Pro), and wants to unlock it. This thread here (started by Olipro) shows how to a security unlock and flash a patched radio onto the Sprint TP2 so it works on AT&T. Pocketnow also wrote an article and created a video concerning just that. However, the OP should not use these techniques if it is indeed a Touch Pro his friend found. Otherwise, it should work absolutely fine.
YAY i think were getting warm. My Friend NOT ME has a Sprint Touch Pro 2, that is reported stolen or lost. He didnt know that it was in that condition as his intentions were to use the phone. well he cant activate it, so he's offering it to me. but i have AT&T and im wondering if theres a way i can use it? even though its reported lost or stolen through sprint? THankyou
Am I the only one that think the phone shoud be taken to Sprint so they can return it the it rightful owner?
Come on, it just the right thing to do.
Maybe there's some BS on having contacted Sprint in the first place.
NAY.. cmon man if given the oppurtunity would u pass up a phone like this if it was offered to you for less than 100$$? i already have a HTC FUZE and my Girlfriend Has the Htc Tilt 2 so really its not a need its more of a want. And what he chooses to do with the phone is none of my business.. he's simply offering it to me becuase he bought it off a barber didnt ask no questions.. tried to reactivate it and thats when he ran into all the problems.. so im really his last resort to make sumthin back from his money.
i sim unlock verizon storm and used it on tmobile so the tp2 should work as well...sprint selling it as a worldwide phone so thats why theres a sim slot so if u travel outside the country u can buy a pay as u go sim card...s0 just unlock and use it on any gsm network

How would you feel if you lost your phone and come on this forum and see someone getting around the system to activate your lost...most likely stolen phone. (which it is at this point is stolen since you are planning on keeping it)
The technical idea of changing the radio is a cool idea for developers but if warez is banned on this forum then so should this thread on "how to steal a sprint phone and use on ATT".
This is a scumbag thread right here.
"How to re-up a stolen phone." WTF?
I agree... there is a large element of douchbagery associated with using someone's lost phone.

Sorry. I know I'm not Mr. XDA or anything, but this place is where a bunch of cool people figure out complicated things and share their knowledge with others purely out of goodwill, and you come here asking them to advise you on how to make a stolen phone work. You're a class act, pal.
wow keep bashing man if u must know my phones are through [email protected] so do me a favor and im asking nicely.. if you have nothing nice to say dont say nothing at all. i was simply asking for some technical support to see if it would be worth my time n money to invest in this phone. otherwise.. act your age not your shoe size k.
You're asking nicely, and I'm saying "no," nicely. What you're looking for will enable the larger stolen phone market, but you don't see that, do you? No, no, you just "want" to have a better phone at the cost of the poor sucker that it was stolen from.
So, yeah..... no.

Touch Pro2 or Tilt 2: Should I Be Concerned?

My year-old Fuze broke and is scheduled to be replaced under an extended warranty. The company called me today to tell me that the Fuze isn't available and they are going to upgrade me to a Touch Pro2.
I have been out of the loop and did some quick research on the phone. It appears that the Touch Pro2 runs Windows Mobile 6.1 and does NOT support 3G, but that the Tilt 2 comes with 6.5 and (I assume) does support 3G. This doesn't sound like much of an upgrade to me!
Should I be concerned? Will the Touch Pro2 even work on the AT&T network? (Hopefully the rep was speaking generically and that she really was talking about the Tilt 2; I hope to find out for sure tomorrow.)
Thanks!
If you are on ATT then insist on a Tilt2. It does have 3g for ATT. That being said it is a great upgrade from a FUze I would think. I went from a Kaiser to Tilt2 and would never go back.
If you were talking to a rep from AT&T, I don't think you'll have to worry. AT&T does not offer the Touch Pro2 to begin with, so I don't think they'll give you a phone that doesn't exist in their inventory. Their "Touch Pro2" is the "Tilt 2". The Tilt 2 will certainly work just fine on the AT&T network.
Sounds like the rep just knew that the Tilt 2 was also a Touch Pro2 and failed to use the AT&T name rather than the general name for the device.
I think his phone is being replaced by a third party warranty company like Square Trade or somthing. I may be wrong but thats how I interpeted his post.

Well, I talked to them yesterday and they said it is a Tilt 2 they're planning to send me.
So...here's my next dumb question. As I continue to read comparisons of the various versions, I'm beginning to think maybe it isn't a Tilt 2 I want after all. Again, they've emasculated the phone by removing the front camera and added that irritating PTT button. I noticed also that there is a downloadable Tilt 2 ROM with WM 6.5. Is it possible to install this ROM onto a GSM Touch Pro2 and make it work with AT&T 3G?
Thanks again for bearing with me....
the camera on these phones is a little funky when taking a picture of yourself, otherwise its great. There are plenty of ROMs in the ROM development section of the rhodium forums. http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=490 they should all work with at&t 3g.
You can use the rom but the Tilt2 has the only hardware built in that allows you to use the full ATT network. It is a hardware deficiancy that the TP2's have not a software one that keeps you from using a Verizon or European TP2.
The PTT button is nice to have though as I have mapped it to the camera. As for the front camera, I never used in on my Kaiser so I dont miss it.
Not able to get 3G from At&T on Touch Pro2 - any workaround?
As I understand from this tread, it's not possible to get my norwegian Touch Pro2 witch I brought with me when I moved to US, to work with my supplier AT&T 3G network?
I have tried several different ROM's even stock shipped AT&T, but no luck only Edge goes... When I set it manually to HSDPA it will not find the network.....
So it has to be a Tilt 2, or is it anyone who knows a workaround for the Touch Pro2?
My old norwegian Kaiser has no problem with the same sim card.
Your phone may be locked to your Norwegian carrier. When my wife went to Europe, we had to unlock her phone to use it with a sim card there.
Contact your old carrier and see if the phone is locked.

His phone isn't locked is just that for some reason, Rhodium doesn't have universal 3g support like Kaiser did. The only way to get Rhodium to work with 3G is to get one that is made for your specific carrier.
