WAP Browser? - HTC Excalibur

Hey so I'm with Rogers wireless here in Canada. Apparently they have an unlimited WAP browsing package and a seperate Data plan. Is there a WAP browser for my HTC Dash (so i can use their unlimited WAP browsing package and not subscribe to their expensive data plans)?

The unlimited WAP browsing package is not available on Windows Mobile Smartphones. Get the (iPhone promo until Aug 31) 30$ for 6GB plan while it is available. I just picked it up last week. It is probably the best you can do right now.

I know but they put me on the 5mb mobile browser plan previously and made a boo boo on their end. All my data usage on my smartphone appeared under 5mb... so how can they even differentiate between the mobile data and smartphone data?

No, there was such an outrage over the iPhone data plans in Canada that Rogers introduced a promo data plan of 30$ for 6GB to correspond to the launch of the iPhone 3G. This plan is available on other 3G phones as well. It is only available until Aug 31st.

It's not that they can differentiate between the data but they can tell through IMEI tracking what phone you are using and they will not let you use it with a WIndows Mobile Smartphone or a Blackberry. For those they have the 15$ unlimited email with 2MB of data or for 30$ you can get 6GB of data.

Damn, thats high. With AT&T, I get unlimited internet for $20 a month. And I have a blackjack with 3g service. But doesn't Operamini work with wap? I used on my old razr, which I think was only wap capable.

Yes, our data plans are terrible here. Believe me this plan is way better than the non-promo plans.

Actually, the conversion is almost equal. $20 US is like $20.11 Canadian. The AT&T plan I'm on is actually MediaNet which is like the wap deal above, but I've been on it for about 2 years and never had a problem. They also have pda plans and laptop tethering plans, but I always tether, use 3g, and have downloaded files around 300 MB on my phone with this plan. So my advice, Keep what you got if it works, unless you find something better.

So does anyone know or have any hard evidence of how they (rogers) is able to bill differently regular cellphone data and smartphone data?
MY hunch is that they apply your plan according to which phone you activate or tell them you have...

How do you know you were being billed under the WAP data? There were a few months like up untill June I believe where they didn't have IMEI tracking implemented so they couldn't track your usage so people were basically getting unlimited data I believe.

Touch Pro 2 with T-mobile questions....

Ok I had a question before deciding on which Touch Pro 2 to get. This question is mainly toward T-Mobile users but I''m sure others will be able to answer this as well...
I was looking at the Touch Pro 2 and since I am on T-mobile I had a few questions. Tried digging aroudn but couldn't find it so if it has already been asked/answered, if you could link me that'd be great.... but...
1) Can any other variation of the Touch Pro 2 be able to use T-Mobiles 3G band. I've heard yes, and no so I was looking for clarification.
2) If I were to get a Touch Pro 2 from T-Mobile will they make me have data? (similar to the G1). AND if I don't get it and decide to just keep my T-Zones, will it work or would they force me off.
I don't browse that often but I like to keep my T-zones as I tether it to my other cheapo 3G phone for use when ever I need it.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
1. Nope. All the other version of the TP2 do not have the 1700/2100 band needed to run on T-Mobile's 3G.
2. Not sure about that, might want to ask them.
1) I'm not 100% sure but I think it's no.
2) Yes, TMo requires a data plan with this phone. If you buy it from another source you should be able to put your SIM card in and use without data or with an existing cheap data plan. There is always the potential that TMo could look at the MEID and realize what you are doing and force the PDA data plan.
Another possibility is to look at the phone at Neweg.com. I noticed that it was for sale with new contracts and it appeared that Newegg was not requiring the data plan at purchase. I don't know if that has changed or if TMo could pull a "gotcha" after you have already bought it.

The $24.95 data plan is the minimum required data plan for the TP2. This is clearly stated on the website; also if you call CS, like I did to but mine, they'll state it too.

I recently had asked what would happen if I were to just put my sim in "my friends touch pro 2" and they said I would be able to use it. I also asked if my data plan would change they said they wouldn't change anything, but instead render that part of the phone unusable until the right plan was added on. So technically I would be able to use the phone and possibly browse the web, but if the browsing the web was an issue, it would stop working and the only way to fix it would be to change my data plan. So so far, so good...

wow i love how they lie to you to try to get you to upgrade your data plan
If you got the unbranded tp2, you might be able to get away with the $5.99 tzones. I would be very surprised if they block data with the tmo tp2 if using the $5.99 or $10.00 data plan. When i went from the g1 to the dash, it asked me to switch data plans and would not allow data. When i went back to the g1, it did it again. Worked for about an hour until i got the "Upgrade subscription" page.
When I first got the phone, the store rep let me keep my 5.99 TZones for a while, I just had to change from epc.tmobile.com to wap.voicestream.com in my settings. Then, my data plan automatically changed to the 24.99 service, in which I called a rep and had them change it back, since I said I don't really do that much web browsing hehe.

T-MOBILE $9.99 Unlimited Internet with the TP2??

hi guys
i got my service with t-mobile last week, and ordered the $9.99 unlimited
internet, first thing when i open
opera redirects me to m.web2go.com and says "Subscription Required" and the rest of the internet apps wont work.
the guy told me that this service only works with very basic phones like a
motorola razr v3..
but i got the service anyways, thinking that i may find trick that i can
cheat the system, well so far i havent found anything..
what i'm thinking is that i might have to change the firmware/hardware info
so the system would think i'm a basic phone not a smart phone and it would work.
i'm using the Energy "Leo" 21892 ROM, not unlocked sim phone.
--
i've heard that people with iphones cheat the system very easy
i know i'm not the only one with tp2 with tmobile trying to use their
$9.99 service.. hope we make clear a solution that would help
other users too.
i would apreciate any kind of help and might buy you a BEER hehe
Go into connection settings and edit the connection for T-Mobile Data.
And then change it to internet2.voicestream.com
I use it all the time. 3G.
wow, fast reply, how do i proceed to do that using
this ROM: Energy "Leo" 21892 ?
step by step, i just installed it
Alright.
Click on your settings folder.
and click connections
After that, click connections
And then it'll say T-Mobile Data.
Add
Set up
Manage.
Click on Manage, and then click on edit for T-Mobile Data and put in
internet2.voicestream.com
Let me know if I missed a step
wow it did work!!
now i have the following questions:
by doing this am i getting bandwith that a 3g for smartphone ( $29.99 ) gets?
is there any cheaper way to get a talk plan, i picked the 500 minutes/Month
and i dont think i'll ever be able to use all of them..
can i get the $9.99 with prepaid phone?
--
i used the app called wi-fi router, routes my data internet to my laptop via wi-fi that's amazing.. compared to the rip-off montly service to get your own mobile broadband card that goes up to 50 dollars a month with verizon/sprint/att
Since you have unlimited internet, just go ahead and get rid of talk plan and download Skype. You can have unlimted talk (US & Canada) for only $2.95 a month to landline and mobile phones. But if you also want a number of your chosing then you'll have to pay an extra $3 a month along with it. However, they do not have caller ID for unknown numbers (cost extra), unless they are already added to your contact list. Mobile Skype feature still needs to be worked on, but if your not interested then I hope you can find another way to get cheaper talk plan on tmobile itself.
I got two free TP2s from T-mobile with activation two months ago using the WMDeals special. Currently, I've got a 1500 minute plan with unlimited messaging, and two smartphone internet plans. Total is about $180 a month.

I got a discount on my TP2, and part of that discount is that I use a certain data plan. They won't let you cancel that if your phone was discounted.

Your chance realistically of lowering your data plan is SLIM, because they will ese you have a smart phone.
You have to pull some tricks to do that.. if you wish to know more, simply reply to this thread.

No longer working?
I tried this "internet2" thing a couple of months ago and it worked. I have since read some comments on the Net that it was no longer working. I just tried it again (even though I have the normal data plan and don't need it). I cannot connect to the internet with these settings.
I wonder if T-Mobile figured it out and cut out support? Maybe they can read forums...
does this apply to tmobile hd2?
I am using the 5.99 plan on my tp2. I just use epc.tmobile.com instead of the internet2. Still works. I was thinking of going to Sprint for the Evo but I was reading of the speeds possible with HSPA+ and I think I am just going to wait it out to get a phone possible of those speeds. I might get an HD2 from someone off of Craigslist just to hold me over.

Now that WP7 is out, can you use it without paying monthly Internet?

can you just use the wifi to connect to the web when you need to?
not sure but some apps may have to verify cellular connectivity is available before they will allow wifi...(ie the app has to successfully access the cellular network internet once)

Wp7 pretty much cannot even function optimally without a data plan. I guess an HD2 would work okay if u didn't set up twitter/fb/activesync to sync automatically. IPhones would also work better since they're less commected... But WP7/Android are basically tethered to a data plan for decent opetation.

good2know, thanks sly. i'd still like to wait for all the bugs to be ironed out and also can't live w/o my custom ringtones. once these issues get ironed out i'll jump in.
Yes
To answer the original question:
YES you can use WP7 without a data plan. I suppose if you are at home or work most of the time, then what the heck, save the $30. Internet on WP7 is much faster on WiFi than 3G (at least Rogers/Fido).
You can even use WP7 without a SIM (no voice, no data). It works great to play to play XBOX Live games and as a portable browser and mail client, LOL.
Also, you CAN buy the phone without a data plan (or a voice plan) -- you just have to pay the unsubsidized price.
thanks for the reply =)
I use my WP7 with data off almost 99% of the time and everything works just fine.

Well T-Mobile "catches" tethering by detecting UAstring on your browser, and redirecting you to a hotspot upsell page. They used to straight up block anything coming from a Chrome desktop UAstring, but since they've started selling Android 4.0 phones with Chrome installed, they've had to back off on that because tons of people (myself included) would get redirected just using "request desktop site" in Chrome for Android.
I'm not sure on their practices now and hadn't been redirected in the past couple months on my T-Mobile SIM. Theres really no reason they would look into it enough to "catch" you doing it unless you're starting to use massive amounts of data to warrant some packet inspection. I think they're going to be blocking 90% of their users because they have T-Mobile branded phones, and that's good enough for them. They'll let the unlocked users go.

You'd still be using a browser UAstring from a desktop when you connect.
If you get redirected, you can just use a UAstring switcher on the desktop browser. FoxFi isn't necessary on an unlocked GNex... there's no carrier firmware to get past.
Isn't this plan $90 per months? How would this be beneficial over Straight Talk Sim, Tmo pre-paid 5gb, etc? Even with the price of my home internet and Straight Talk added together its still cheaper than this.
Why not just get a contract free sim plan if you already have the phone. Why sign a 2 year contract?

No idea about straight talk don't use it. The prepaid T-Mobile 5 GB plan tho is 70 a month. Just by adding 20 more on you have unlimited.. having a unbranded phone you can tether w it is good too. Now, your telling me that you don't pay 90 bucks for straight talk and your internet home service combined.. you could be on a crappy internet service then. Cause I have 4G clear at home for 50 and it blows nuts, Comcast is 30-50. So that leaves you with a straight talk plan of maybe 20-30? For what 2Gbs? Sounds like you got the short end of the stick then lol

There is a T Mobile sim card prepaid plan 5gb for 30 dollars a month. Check my sig . I am on straight talk sim which is 45 dollars per month on HSPA plus speeds , between 4 and 8mbps. My home internet is only 35 dollars per month and is Roadrunner. I don't see the point of a 90 dollar plan for a HSPA galaxy Nexus. I was just asking because unlimited data sounds nice but not for double of what I am paying. I get a good amount of data with my no contract plan anyways.

How can you be sure? I found out that it is limited time offer (See fine prints: http://deals.t-mobile.com/unlimited-data-plan)

You can't be sure. I'm just speculating... Its only available right now on Classic and Value Plans. Depending on how well it does it may come to Prepaid as well.

I made the switch to the truly unlimited plan this morning and was scared that tethering would not work. I came home and tried it on my nexus 7 tablet and it worked flawlessly... I couldn't be happier

Of course it works. They have no way of blocking your phone from turning it on when you have an unlocked device. They can only block it by detecting UAstring and redirecting webpages.

$90 (Classic Plan) if you take a device subsidy. $70 if you don't (Value Plan).
Its beneficial for people who have family plans because at 3 or more users, individual prepaid plans are less cost effective than family plans.
For an individual user, it's not the best deal ever unless you're currently using the $70 prepaid 5GB plan on T-Mobile and want to use more than 5GB of data and are willing to sign a contract for it.
If you're currently on Straight Talk, then you'd only switch to this if you really needed guaranteed truly unlimited data. If you can keep the data usage lower, ST is obviously a better deal.
Thanks for the info. Saw unlimited and thought it may be a reason to cancel home internet but I guess not.

Now, your telling me that you don't pay 90 bucks for straight talk and your internet home service combined.. you could be on a crappy internet service then.

Sure you would pay it, but the real question is: why would you pay it (when there's a cheaper alternative with less risk of being sanctioned for tethering)?
It does depend, but generally you'll want to get the cheapest combination of services possible. And generally that won't include a $90 phone bill.

Not sure I'd want to rely on a T-Mobile connection for everything in my house including my phone.
I am having the unlimited plus data now which is $20 for 2 GB..
Still thinking if I want to pay $10 extra each month for the unlimited....
2GB is so little.....
I'm guessing it will take awhile, but does anyone know if T-mo's UAstring checking or any other checks are more stringent on these plans compared to the older ones?
every now and then when i spend an afternoon browsing with Chrome i get sent to the upsell page. nothing they can do on their end will reset it. would suck to have it happening more frequently.

Use a UAstring switcher. Change to Safari or Firefox UAstring.

T Mobile prepaid true unlimited data.

I just spoke to someone I know at T Mobile today. I will say this is not a best friend of mine or anything but I don't see why he would lie to me nether. He said they received pan flips for T Mobiles unlimited data with no caps for PRE-PAID plans. He said the price will be $74.99 and launching sometime in November. This came about when I was telling him I would like to switch but I don't want a contract.
Again I'm also taking this as a rumor guys. And yes I know some of you pay $30 a month on straight talk. This is not about straight talk so let's try to keep that out of the thread.
Makes sense, just figured they'd wait a bit longer while they push it on the Classic and Value Plans and get people onto some contracts if they can.
Oh, and Straight Talk is $45 .

Lol OK thanks for the correction.
Tmobile already has prepaid plans. The $30 plan you're talking about is 100mins, unlimited data + text. If you want unlimited everything it's $70. 4G data is limited to 5GB on both of these.

And like I clearly posted. True unlimited data not 5 GB of untrottled crap.

OP is talking about fully unlimited unthrottled data, which T-Mobile has recently brought to its contract Classic and Value Plans.
10 char
Hmmm... 80 bucks a month... I guess that is for LTE...
I'm with wind in Toronto Ontario Canada, I currently pay 33 a month for Canada wide calling and unlimited everything (Data is 10 gigs and 30k throttled there after)

T-Mobile doesn't have LTE yet. They're planning to roll it out by the end of 2013.

I say if you want prepaid and real unlimited wait until novemeber a d see if this is true.
I like simple mobile i use quite a bit of data and haven't had any throttling saving $20/month for using wifi at home. $50/month compared to $70/month tmobile truly unlimited rumor.

Have you not learned that customer service/sales reps usually know less than XDA members?

My bad, I didn't interpret your OP like that. The current plans are still unlimited data, just not unlimited 4G.
I pray this is true. I hate the thought of signing a contract at this point
