So I just got my touch yesterday and I downloaded google maps and I try to use the gps feature but it wont pick up any satellite's. I had to moto q9c before this and I did the same thing and I usually picked up like 9.
So I've been reading this forum for 4 hours thread by thread some new some old.
What I've gathered is GPS hardware is in the phone. But you cant use it unless an update comes out. Now people were predicting updates in early January. It's June. So I should have the updates?? or do i need to hack it to enable the GPS.
Thanks in advance
Kp
i suggest checking out the Vogue Forums at ppcgeeks.com and you'll get a plethora of info on the Vogue (a.k.a., Sprint Touch). (assuming you have the Sprint version). if you do have the Sprint version of the Touch, in order for GPS to work, you have to (1) install software (SPL) that allows you to (2) install a "leaked" Sprint ROM (read: not official) that enables the GPS radio on the Sprint Touch. the entire process is discussed in great detail on ppcgeeks.com. oh yeah, read and re-read to ensure you understand the pros/cons of enabling the GPS features. by the way, i have it enabled on my Sprint Touch and it works well! good luck!

Who is your carrier? If it's Telus I highly suggest that you call and complain... same for Sprint actually... Did the salesperson SAY that GPS or "Navigator" would be available? If they did, they were telling you a lie. It's possible that it may be included in the upcoming updates, but trust me when I say that the salespeople don't know when the update is coming or what's in it. They don't know any better than us what will be included.
Yes, in all likelyhood there will be some minor hacking involved to enable GPS. We think they'll include support for their OWN navigation software (i.e. Telus Navigator), and if that is the case it's a matter of a few tweaks to get GPS running system-wide.
If the update doesn't include that much, a homebrew rom will be your only option to get GPS. Yes, the hardware is there.
I have sprint and was using google maps, and I called up sprint and the GPS is enabled and they can only give support for there apps. We'll im just wondering on my moto q it had wm 6 and i could access these settings
Code:
The settings i have in Start > Settings > Phone Settings > GPS
Settings are as follows:
Number of Fixes: Always ON
TIme between fixes (seconds): 2
Performance (seconds): 16
Accuracy (meter): 256
and I could use the GPS with Google maps.
I tried to find these setting in the touch also and they weren't there, the only ones i found were for External.
Any clue why this option isn't on the touch but on the Q? I'd assume they'd be smart and put it on the touch too since its more expensive.
Thanks for all your help I'll give what Cortez said a try.

It is NOT enabled, Sprint rep's are playing dumb. I called them the other day to ask about the upgrade 3.02, the rep said "its on the web page" that, of course, was BS. If it is a sprint rom, than you can just run the leaked rom and it will update.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=394039
Don't fully quote me on this, as I just recently got a HTC device, so I've been heavy into the flashing threads lately.
Currently the Touch, for any carrier, until updated, does NOT have the GPS enabled, but the hardware IS there. The problem is with the RADIO being version 1.XX, and in order for GPS to function, you need a 3.XX version. So, at least in my case, you will need to flash. Be sure to very extensively read up on the "How-To's" of flashing this device. ANY, and I mean ANY mishap on doing this can have you running back to your carrier paying for a new device. Don't be alarmed by all the warnings, because this will work for you. But, DO NOT skip anything in the forums about flashing. Read every page if you need to.
You can be sure to pinpoint yourself on a map starting here:

Yes, definately do it. I'm not that great with computers, eyc. but i read a ****load and this is a no brainer. Besides there is tons of help available if you f%@* up. just make sure you understand the steps before you take the leap... look at PPCGeeks for OMJ's custom roms.
I've been using the bell ROM for 2 weeks with ZERO issues.
GPS tracks me anywhere I go.
Good luck
Telus ROM - GPS hardware
I've spoken to a Telus Tech Rep... there IS a planned ROM update for the Touch. I did ask also about the GPS feature. It DOES exist on the phone.
IT can be "unlocked" however it wil void warranty. You are quite correct about the Telus Navigator - a PAID service of $10.00/mo. I'm NOT happy about tahat as my plan is expensive enough as it is. One of the reasons I picked up this device IS GPS. I'm Not happy about these developments.I've had other issues iwth the Telus Touch too, but that's for another forum of discussion.
Good luck guys in finding a GPS solution that works for ALL of us.
Makes me wish I knew hwo ot hack.

I got my Sprint Touch to use GPS without a monthly fee.
I used the leaked official rom to update my phone to WM6.1 and activated Rev A GPS. How to do this is very well laid out on PPC geeks and pretty intuitive.
Now which GPS program to use, after much investigation and failure...the only one I found working well was the Garmin Mobile XT. You install the program properly and it will work. It doesn't need to be primed or use an extra program to pre-activate your GPS.
Used it last night and it worked brilliantly well.

Unfortunately it doesn't work on the TyTN II. On attempting to login, it is unable to connect to My ISP GPRS, 3G... TeleNav then issues the message, "Cannot connect to server. Please make sure that your phone is turned on and try again later".
Any ideas?
Telenav 4.2 for the 8525 seems to work on the TyTN II but I have not given it a thorough test yet.
Telenav say they do not support the TyTN II yet.
Unlocked TyTN II / Kaiser
WM6 Pro
CE OS 5.2.1620 (Build 18125.0.4.2)
ROM 1.56.405.5 - 8/28/07
Radio 1.27.12.11
Protocol 22.45.88.07H
Since the Kaiser has an internal GPS and the TeleNav for the Mogul and the 8525 force you to use bluetooth GPS neither of those verions will work. But I was able to find this version that works perfectly with it's internal GPS.
http://ota.telenav.com/ota/tn/ipaq6900/TeleNav_hw69xx.cab
It is version 4.2, does anyone know of a 5.2 version that supports internal GPS devices?
Thanks!

I am using Radio 1.51 with VP3G. If you see the "Signal Too Weak" message, that usually means your BT GPS module is too far away from the phone.
I am a bit confused by your statement that you need the radio version with GPS enabled. If you are trying to use the GPS chip in the Hermes, I was unaware that anyone had that working, unless you did some soldering. To my knowledge, you need a Bluetooth GPS module to use this apllication with the 8525 or any Hermes variant.

It's about god-damned time they got around to making a competitive program for the WM platform.
Guys this is an awesome find thanks! I have been waiting for this after many many promised from Telenav "it's coming". I just thought i would shre the following. I hope anyone who cares will also post to the Telenav forums and inform them this srt of deceptive practive wont be tolerated by the mobile community.
Let me first say for "legal reasons" below is simply my opinion/impression you make your own call on whats going on but my mind is made up.
Telenav the AT&T preferred partner for GPS is apparently deceiving users into believing that they currently dont have a way to run their latest version (5.x) on the AT&T 8525. There are loads of users complaining because their purchased the phones thinking they had the advanced features advertised by AT&T such as 3D maps and traffic information only to find out later AT&T was not telling the truth (to clarify I am not talking about the fact that there is no internal GPS, I knew that going in and I was fine with it. I bought Telenav's bluetooth GPS unit).
Although their other versions included this functionality the version allowed on the AT&T 8525 (4.x) was quite old without these features. All the while we were locked into a contract, asked to buy an external GPS, and sign up for new service with ATT, and Telenav service. After nearly a year of frustration I came across this threadand it came to my attention there was a download available marked for a different phone with the same hardware which worked. I downloaded it and installed and as I was told no problems at all. Works fine, tested all over no issues as most here can confirm. here is where it gets interesting.
I informed Telenav of this fact poorly asuming they might care and was promptly warned not to mention this. As well now all my original posts has been deleted, even though they originally responded several times (I have the screenshots). They must have had some internal meeting on how to handle this "leak" and they decided to censor me. As well they have now deleted all related posts in their forum. I was clear to mention this was not supported by Telenav and was for another build, but they didnt care, they wanted NO ONE to know. Why?? I will tell you.
My suspicion which they chose to dance around and would not answer me on was there is a specific reason they are not providing the update and thats business decision between Telenav and AT&T. You see AT&T just released the 8925, they upgraded version of the 8525. And while the hardware is virtually identical, it comes withe latest version of Telenav. It is my position that Telenav is purposly not releasing an update to the software which their customers were duped into purchased based on false advertisement because AT&T wants to force you to buy the new phone to get it. Very Sleezy in my opinion. i want to mare sure it is known that this type of practice will not be accepted my the mobile community and we will look to more respectable vendors for applications. Please make sure to let Telenav know what you think of this.
BTW each time I created a post even remotely discussing this it was deleted. Make sure to check back their forums after posting and you will see. Don't be afraid to open the post again, we will force them to respond. I opened over 10 and each was deleted with little to no reason but something tells me they know i'm pissed

ok after a couple of hours of the phone with telenav this is what i got. Fire this address into your pda browser and away you go.

or you can use this one
http://att.telenav.com/nav/choice/at_att.html
then select AT&Ttilt.
This version will run the internal GPS and is the latest version. Enjoy
This is why I bought the Garmin 10x which works awsome with my 8525, and has all the 3D maps. Plus the reciever works with Live search(which is better when walking), and google maps. Never wanted to give them my money for what I could by for a year of service.
So Aaron McCarthy discovered a new Vogue rom for Telus users (I REPEAT: TELUS ONLY!!!). It was at one of the known IP addresses which HTC has used. It was accidentally leaked or opened for a tester, I suppose. It's also seemingly no longer available... I get "Directory Listing Denied" when I follow the link now. So, of course I've uploaded my copy to rapidshare. Back up any important files on your phone and then enjoy:
http://rapidshare.com/files/1282900...4350H_3.41.00_Ship_withPPSTPatch1.20.exe.html
It'll be easy to install, just run the EXE on your windows XP/Vista computer, connect your vogue with Activesync or Windows Mobile Device Center when the program prompts you to do so, and follow the on-screen instructions. It took me approximately 15 minutes to do this. Add five for letting the phone customize itself.
I also did some messing with it to get everything working. It does not fully function out of box (which is probably why it's not actually released yet).
For me, the steps that got the GPS and Internet to work:
-Dial *22803 , 1 (for English), 1 (program your handset). Wait for reset.
-Install Google Maps and a registry editor.
-Search for a registry key called GPSMODE and change it's dword value from 2 to 4. This may not be necessary, but it worked for me.
<EDIT>Registry change is definitely not necessary, I've tried it both ways with no different effect. What this setting does might be explained better in the next post.</EDIT>
-Soft reset.
-Run Google Maps and any other freeware, no problem.
I'm certain that some GPS programs will require initialization/tweaks, and I'd bet that most of those have already been examined elsewhere in this forum. Anyway the GPS is seemingly solid and accurate. I placed it next to a handheld garmin unit and speed, lattitude, longitude were matched on both devices over a half-hour trip. It will certainly NOT work indoors.
As for Rev.A, I honestly cannot tell you anything about it. I'm in a CDMA only area for the next 3 weeks.
Thanks again to Aaron McCarthy for discovering the Rom and letting us know so that I could copy it before we got locked out. Here's the thread he started : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2385096
by setting GPSMode to 4 you disable the GPS. Not the best idea....
GPSMode 1 = ONLY pure GPS
GPSMode 2 = GPS + aGPS
GPSMode 4 = aGPS only
Got it installed without any issues. However Google maps and the Telus Navigator programs don't seem to be able to find the GPS... Well, to be more precise, googlemaps doesn't give an error. It just sits there seeking satellites. The Telus NAV doesn't get past the startup screen. Any suggestions?
WM6.1 is working fine on my phone but is it possible that I actually don't have the built in GPS even though it is a Telus HTC Touch?

It has been known since a while that all Vogues phones (or CDMA Touch) have the GPS hardware built in. It is just not activated by Telus yet.

Thanks for this ROM. Can't be more easy to upgrade a ROM.
GPS is working fine. It took several try and a very clear sky (no tree) to make first connexion. It was so slow to connect that I suspect AGPS (cellular tower triangulation assist) is not working.
At 3 bars of reception, in EVDO REV A zone, I get a DL speed of 150 to 400kb/s which is pretty lame and just a bit better than before rev A.
One problem:
When clicking on status icons on the top bar (volume, battery, etc.), it used to display the control directly. Now it displays an intermediate screen repeating those icons but in a larger mode. It is buggy because it doesn't display message icons if I previously clicked Dismiss. Then I can't go to my messages.
In Start, Settings, System, TouchFLO, there is no setting to remove this screen.
I tried HKLM->Software->HTC->EnlargeTitleBar->Enable=0 without success.
Is it something that comes with WM6.1?
Is it Telus ROM specific?
Do Sprint official ROM got the same problem?
Any reg to remove this?
That is too funny

If you go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=406320&page=2 and go to post #14 you can see the guide to improving GPS locks on the telus rom. I mean DRASTICALLY. From initally loading the rom I went from getting 4-5 locks maybe after a few minutes on a cold GPS start then once I changed all the settings and did a soft reset I was getting 6 to 7 satellite locks down in my basement. Pretty impressive
It's not as complicated as it seems to be in the post I made. Pretty straight forward actually and I would recommend it to anyone who wants better GPS reception
In regards to Rev A speeds. I'm in London ontario so would think there would be rev A in the area but I dont get any better download speeds. I still download around 600-800 kbps. Which is really good enough for me. I dont know if rev A actually was supposed to increase your download speed or if it improved upload speeds making Voip easier and allowing you to have data and phone stuff going on at the same time. All I know is my internet speed didnt change but Rev A was enabled.

Every time, before using this, an already established data connexion is needed BEFORE looking for GPS satellite. The GPS will not establish the connection if it's not there. A simple solution is to open Google map and move the map up to a download is required BEFORE making the GPS satellite connexion.

Yep - and it appears to be identical to the one referenced in this thread from 3 weeks ago. That's kind of a disappointment considering how much trouble the tech-naive user is going to have getting the gps to work and getting their data connection back after flashing.

Very lame.
Exact same files and version. http://www.htc.com/us/FAQ_Detail.aspx?p_id=80&act=sd
2 weeks ago I sent a support ticket to HTC stating that the GPS fix is difficult to get, mainly because all GPS assisted features (aGPS) are disabled by default in the radio (can't be fixed by a simple registry tweak). I even pointed them to one solution of many (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=406320&page=2 post #14). Then no correction and not even a mention in the documentation.
I just can't imagine how many phone calls they will get from upgraders complaining that the GPS can't find satellites after 5 minutes...
Ok, this might be a bit of a newbie question but since I am doing this months after everyone else I am looking to learn from those who have gone before
I finally got tired of waiting for Bell to release an official upgrade for the HTC Touch that would enable the GPS. So after months of waiting I finally went the DHarvey route carefully following the popular and often referenced instructions found on PPCGeeks http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=24979
Anyway, long story short, I upgraded my Bell Touch with the Alltel firmware to upgrade the radio. Then I flashed NFSFAN’s "Non-Themed ROM" found linked in the same thread.
Now apparently the GPS is working but I don’t know if it ever gets a “lock”. If I use the GPSViewer app it never gets a fix. In Google Maps the “My Location” feature works (when checking off “Use GPS”) but it is always off by several kilometers. I am in Burlington, Ontario and am trying this outside on a beautiful 27 degrees clear sky day.
Should I be upgrading to an even newer radio version? Or should I be looking at a different ROM (other then the NFSFAN’s Non-Themed ROM)? Do I have to specifically look for “made for Bell” ROM’s? Or can I use any ROM?
Is there a ROM out there that stands up as “the” best ROM for the Bell Touch? Could the ROM I’m using have adversely affected by reception? As in everything works (calls, internet, etc) but instead of getting 3 bars I now get 1 or 2? Or is this my imagination?
Basicly, now that this has been around for several months is there something new I should be looking for? Now that I have broken out of the “must run Bell’s firmware” mode where do I go from here? The possibilities seem endless and exciting.
Best regards,
The Fish

Oh kay... I really hope I don't get yelled at for not searching or something but I can't find anything and I seriously need help. I have the 3.42.50(I think) radio and OMJ's Custom Verizon Rom and I just can't get a lock. I've tried thousands of tutorials and haven't had any luck. On my current flash I've used this tutorial, and haven't gotten a lock. I don't know what I'm doing wrong... I'm pretty desperate. ANY help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance...
First, to make sure you have the updated radio (which you probably do) go to start/settings/system/Device Information and check there to make sure.
I wish I had had such a detailed set of instructions to follow when I was setting up my US Cellular Vogue. I had to patch together instructions from 3 different sources to make it work. Of course it works, yours doesn't. Are you outside when you are trying to get at least your initial lock. When I first lock on I generally have to be outside, after it is once locked on I can go inside and it will retain a lock.
Check for my Tips thread, basic info on setting it up is there.

and... can u send me a link to those tips TheChampJT? im bad at navigating forums... :-\
Have you ever run the MR1 on your phone? This would block third party apps from accessing your gps. If this is the case, you need to down grade to a none gps rom, the upgrade.
take a look here

I might have... would a radio version be able to tell u if this is my problem?... my radio is currently 3.42.50... I did notice my radio version changed after the update so i just used cokes rom to flash it back and started using another rom...
If it came with verizon WM 6.1 or you flashed verizon WM 6.1 and let costumizations run, then you found your problem. Maybe if you tell use what you have done with it since you got it, it might be easier to diagnos.

I used this reported "Leaked Official Verizon Rom". IT WORKS!
ftp://ppcgeeks.com/Vogue/Verizon/RUU_Vogue_VZW_WWE_3.14.605.1_Radio_3.37.77_Ship.exe
You run it and allow it to customize and wahla...updated WM6.1 and the GPS works!
Gps has to be configured to use Com 4.
Use HTC Titan Quick GPS to updated satellite empiricals (GPS position data). I get cold fixes in 15 seconds indoors! Download it from: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=4914&d=1201747040
You will have to do a "Over the Air" reprogram via *228, I think its option 2.
I HAVE NO COMPLAINTS WITH THE NEW ROM AND EASY AS PIE TO INSTALL!
Darn GPS is pretty dam close. I get 29foot accuracy 98.5% of the time!
ozzzzzzz,
did you change the location setting under phone settings? I forgot to check this and finally figured to look there.
Go to settings / personal / phone-----then hit services and select settings for location. Make sure that 911 is not selected. May be simple issue with that.
GL!

KCDale99 Posted this, couple weeks ago, it still works people.!!!!!!!!........
I justreceived a new XV6900 in the mail today when mine suffered a hardwarefailure of some sort. The new phone came with the newest ROM whichincludes the 3.37.78 radio. Of course I turn on the phone, and updatesrun. This disabled the GPS even after loading a custom ROM. the aGPSfix would not work, and gps Viewer couldn't even find one satellite.
Ifigured this was just like an old, 'let the customizations run'problem. So I followed the steps found here with one exception:
<!-- m -->http://wiki.ppchaven.com/index.php?titl ... ERIZON_GPS<!-- m -->
Onstep 4, I ran the RUU_Vogue_VZW_WWE_3.14.605.1_Radio_3.37.78_ShipOfficial ROM from Verizon. I did NOT let customizations run. I thenloaded my custom ROM. This puts me on the official Verizon radio.
After that, the aGPS fix worked like a charm and GPS is working.
Iknow this is a rehash of other issuew, but I wanted to let everyoneknow that the newest phones shipping are disabling GPS all together.
THIS STILL WORKS PEOPLE!!!!!!! been at this for a week now with absolutely no luck until now this guy has it.................. 5-31-09
I used NFSFAN's custom ROM WM6.5v8 for my custom rom.
the only other thing i had to do is when i was done installing ROM's my phone would not authenticate on Verizon network, so instead of calling them i use the online MY Verison to activate my phone to a old Verizon i760 then re-activated my xv6900 online ordered (verizon) a week ago !!! I have tried every fix, etc... until this combo... except i never went to the leaked verizon radio been to the bell, us cellular, alltel, verzon, etc... and back again..... now it works...... with the fix this guy posted......QPST ip info fom the fix page, links all seem to work!
Again********THIS STILL WORKS PEOPLE
XV6900 CAME STOCK ABOUT A WEEK AGO!!!
YOur first link is to reply to another thread, your second link takes me to the wiki main page, so no information on both whatsoever....
No GPS in Google maps
I have done all the upgrades.... done the sprint ROM to the VZW to now running NSFANS WM6.1 for VZW 1.15.
I get Sat locks in the GPS Viewer but not in Google Maps... anyone have any ideas?

I'm with this guy... Except, I'm worse off. I can't even get a lock in GPS Viewer. It finds the satellites, but does not lock.
I did whole unlock 0.40 to Sprint ROM to unlock 2.31 to VZW ROM, then straight to WM6.5V12, then I did the aGPS hack with QPST, and even tried cody's fix in his FAQ thread. I spent all yesterday morning trying to get GPS working, and I've got nothing to show for it. I'm so f'n pissed right now!

Nope. The only time I let customizations run was when I installed WM6.5.
I did the Coke .40, Sprint (no-run), Coke 2.31, Verizon (no-run), NSFANS WM6.5 (run) and then his two verizon cabs and finished with the aGPS hack with QPST. I used the Telus fix, but should I have used a different one?
I was able to get GPS (with locks after a few minutes outside). I don't think I am getting aGPS, though.
Doesn't aGPS help when you are moving or inside? I think that you would get faster locks (especially the first time) if aGPS is working.
BTW, that routine killed my voice line and SMS with a #8899 notification. Verizon networking is still working.
Todd you'll have to call Verizon and have them re-authorize your phone. The same thing happened to me when I tried that fix.

I will. That office is closed until Sunday. While I am waiting I am trying other methods and options.
I am currently on a Coke .40, Verizon ROM 3.14.605.1 Radio 3.37.77 (no-cust), Coke 2.31, Verizon ROM 3.14.605.1 Radio 3.37.77 (w/cust) followed by QuickGPS. This lets me see satellites and gets me fully back on a Verizon radio. (I will still have to call #8899 when their office opens)
Can anyone match up ROM versions with the MR1, MR2 designations? Is 3.37.78 MR1?

first you should run gps veiwer and get a lock before you open google maps.
second go to options/gps settings in google maps and set to managed by windows. that should work
Guys I know this has been covered in other threads and I've searched for hours, reading every thread I can, and I still cannot come up with a fix for this.
I am running a Tmobile Branded Touch Pro2, unlocked, hard SPL of course, with EnergyROM Photon Standard WM6.5 v 20091011 which is very slick by the way. My radio is version 4.49.25.05.
For whatever reason "My Location" doesn't work and Weather does not download. I have checked all the obvious things like making sure autoupdate is set, location service is on, etc etc. As a side note, Google Maps seems to locate me just fine, Bing is flaky at best.
Any thoughts???
Known issue. It doesn't work in custom roms.
If I load the Standard TMobile ROM that I saw posted here for the Touch Pro2 will My Location start working again?
Is there a way to go back to the shipped radio version as well?
this has been discussed many times...my location for some reason does not work on 3g even with the stock rom...but it will work when u switch to edge..just try it out..

First of all it does work in custom roms -- it's working on my phone and mine is a custom rom. Many people have posted about how with this cooked rom or what that new radio-rom that now My location works. But, that doesn't mean it's guaranteed to work -- just that it can work.
And, believe it or not, mine only works when I have a 3G connection...I don't know why, but it's true -- tested again and again.
I'm currently running the Photon Oct-11 manila2.l OS-rom with the 4.49.25.17 radio rom.
One accurate way to put it is: Try this, try that...and -- depending on where you live, maybe...it might work! Good Luck!
