Slowdown/delayed responses - P3300, MDA Compact III General

I'm getting a fair bit of slowdown recently on my MDA Compact lll. For instance, I'll reboot and then find I get very delayed response if I click on something, ( such as contacts, sim card, tomtom, etc) like it's thinking about it and working hard to bring up the information. It can take forever. Sometimes the tomtom logo on the desktop doesn't appear. And sometimes the contact list shows up empty even though the scroll bar is working on the right, so it knows there's a list of contacts but they're invisible until I reboot.
It can take up to 3 reboots before everything is back to normal and responding fast again. I've done several hard resets recently so it's not like it needs formatting. Could something be corrupted? I was thinking maybe corruption of the storage card, but then why would it affect the contacts list which is not on the storage card.

Yet another thread that gets no replies. Seriously, this forum is ****.

Only just seen this..
When monitoring the startup of my XDA Orbit it uses around 85-90% memory for at least a minute until it settles down to 50%.
What contacts software are you using and do you have SPB Pocket Plus installed?

Hi. No contacts software other than the default WM5. I just transferred my 118 phone contacts from my sim card to the phones own contact list. Nope, I don't have SPB Pocket Plus on my phone.

Lost ALL my contacts!? Second time, different phone...

2 totally separate phones (dash's) one with Rogers and one with stock Tmo WM6. Hard restart all contacts disappear! Since in their infinite wisdom you cant disable the sim contacts from showing, I rely on them STAYING in the phone memory! Anyone else with this issue? It has happened only twice in maybe 4 months, but is very frustrating!
Thanks for any advice!
A hard reset will restore the phone to factory default (no contact list). It's supposed to do that. Keep your contacts synchronized via outlook and activesync.
Sorry, I was lying when I typed hard reset. I yanked the battery so it wasnt exactly a soft reset but I did not do the clear storage either I guess next time it locks up I will be more patient!

You should be syncing your phone with your contact list on your PC or exchange server if you are lucky enough to have one. This is one of the most basic things you can do on a smartphone. What if you lost your phone???
I do sync. But I dont take my computer with me either. So today, all day, I was without contacts. Now they are back caused I sync'd.
I guess we should be telling people that want louder call volume to get a hearing aid and people that want to run another ROM to buy the right phone
backup
I use Sprite Backup for said problem and its golden. Simply make backups of your data on the go and when things happen like say an impossible to stop boot loop or a data error, you can still restore everything.
I guess I am just the kind of person that would rather look at the root of the problem, not the band-aid repair after it happens again. I will look into the backup, but I will probably just carry my spare deactivated sim card so I can transfer stuff back if it fails me again.
So does anyone know a way to KEEP the contacts on the sim, yet hide them from view on the contacts list? It surpirses me that something my 8 year old Nokia does WM6 wont let you do . I have never accidentally lost my sim contacts- but the duplicate thing is annoying
The rogers rom for the htc s621 (dash) allows you to hide sim contacts without a registry edit. goto settings then phone... you'll find it there.
also there is a reg edit for said issue for roms that don't offer this option. I have not personally found a smartphone rom without this option but the regedit is: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Phone]
"ShowSIM"=dword:00000001 ->0 to disable, 1 to enable.
Now you can keep your contacts on your activated SIM.
THANK YOU!!! I had not realized Rogers did this!
Found the check box under Settings/Phone/Call Options

Uninstalling MS Voice Command

Does anyone know how to uninstall this? When i try to do it on the phone or over Activesync I get a warning message that it could not remove all of the program and ultimately the entire program is still installed. It takes up too much room for what it does (and I think there's a battery issue with it as well) Thanks

Try using the Uninstall application of this program: http://www.dinarsoft.com/memmaid/ Once the program is uninstalled, just delete the remaining folders and then run the Quick Clean and that should remove all remnants of the Uninstalled program.
Thanks. It helped to remove mobitv and xmradio which were entirely useless to me and took up a lot of room. However, when I tried to uninstall memmaid it left a few bits behind - there are folders remaining in the program directory... in fact the MobiTv icon still exists in my program directory leading me to beleive that it's just deleting a folder and not removing the program from my reigstry, etc. It's a start though. Thanks again
Re: uninstall
This may be a silly question, but was VC cooked into the rom originally or did you install it yourself? If it was cooked in you will not be able to remove it. (As is true for any cooked in application.)
Best wishes,

Quick question; when using MemMaid, did you use the Quick Clean with all items checked? by default not all are checked.
Dead shortcuts
Dead Registry
Bad uninstall (files)
Bad Uninstall (Registry)
These are just a few items I would make sure are checked..
Thanks for the help guys. It was not part of a cooked rom and after checking the boxes on memmaid and rebooting a few times VC is gone (and 5 megs are free). After uninstalling memmaid (it's 900k - I can't keep that around ) it just left an empty folder called "Handyswitch actions" that I'm just going to manually delete. Thanks for the help. I was this close to deciding between keeping Skyfire and outlook

Sorry, during install of MemMaid you could of unchecked the handyswitcher and whatever extras you didn't need and they wouldn't have installed. Glad to see you has some success though.

You can't install MS VC to storage card and have it work correctly unfortunatly.
I've had same issue whilst installing MSVC to storage card and had tp install it to phone. I also had same problem trying to uninstall it. Luckily I wanted to upgrad my ROM which solved the problem
As I've been using my phone I learned there's a new glitch - if I use autocomplete to fill in text or complete an email address, etc it crashes my phone (I think pasting text does too). This didn't happen a day ago so I think there's a connection to the uninstallation of VC. I've reset it 5 times and it's always the same result. The screen becomes nonresponsive, switching to landscape mode takes about 45 seconds and doesn't solve anything and both the onscreen keyboard (Happy Tapping) and the hard keyboard fail to function. If I wait it out I can get the start menu to drop down and get to the Today screen but navigation is still brutally slow there and the email sits. I Use o2plus and it shows apps are running but doesn't state them (it's pOutlook that is frozen). Any ideas? I wish PPC had 'last good state' like Windows... thanks again
I have VC on my memory card and have no problem... Dont know why you have though.

Orbit stuck on green screen, need to get data!

Hi everyone!
First post, have tried to find something similar in old threads/search but had no luck.
This evening, whilst composing text messages, my xda orbit became very sluggish and slow and kept freezing, which only a soft rest would solve. After happening 6 or 7 times, the soft reset now goes no further than the green "windows mobile direct push technology" screen (the one which follows the blue o2 screen).
Active sync on the PC does not detect the phone. Have read about bootloader etc but cant seem to get past the coloured screen or get it to sync with the PC and I dont have an SD card reader.
Have tried removing simcard, SD card, leaving off for a while etc. With my contract sim the green light at the top flashes (indicating a signal?) but phoning the phone gets no reply (although it does ring, doesnt go straight to voicemail) but on my PAYG Sim I dont get the flashing light. Every 2 minutes the phone lights up brighter then dims 20 seconds later (which is what my dimmer was set to time-wise when the phone worked). I have never installed any hardware or software on top of the original defaults other than a sandisk 1gb SD card approx 1 year ago.
Now I know and have read than a hard reset may fix this (before anyone suggests it). However, I have some VERY important data on the phone which I have to retrieve (in the form of a few hundred very important text messages containing data, and a huge contact list, the backup of has been lost). The data in these texts and contact list is paramount to me.
So, is there ANY way to get this data from the phone before hard resetting to get the phone to work? To be honest i'm not bothered about the handset/phone itself working I just desperately want the data?
Any help at all would be very much appreciated (and i'm no techie by the way, just a simpleton lol!).
Thanks in advance, happy to set up some sort of Paypal reward scheme for anyone that can sort this as this data is as close to life or death as it gets without it being life or death lol!
PS: For example, is there a way of taking the phones integrated memory card out (with all the contacts and texts intact) and getting the data from it either onto a PC or into another handset?
PPS: Anyone in the South East of England who wants to earn a few quid and can sort this in person feel free to offer!
UPDATE
Well, today I switched it on and it was still the same, and again the same 5 hours later, then suddenly it perked up and everything worked!! I managed to get it to sync, copied the pim file (which I think is the contacts?) onto my PC and then it froze again. Soft reset and now stuck on green screen.
If the magical happens and it flickers into life one final time, where exactly on an orbit are all text messages stored? If I can copy the folder onto the PC, hard reset, then copy it back I should have them all?
There are a few .vol files - PIM.VOL is the contacts/calendar one, and theres another one for messages, but I cannot remember what it is called unfortunately...
OK, thankyou! There's been some more developments!
If I soft rest the phone around 5 times then leave it on the charger (even if it's fully charged) for around 5 hours the phone jumps into life! However, doing things for any length of time freezes the phone.
Added Pimbackup via activesync and it retrieves all the messages fine, but freezes at the point of eginning to add them to the SD card.
Active sync wont let me into most of the folders on the device (such as the windows folder).
So, I can get on the phone eventually but does anyone have ANY ideas as to how I can backup or transfer text messages etc?
TIA

Phone keeps hanging with 'Messaging' menu appearing

Hi All,
I'm a long time lurker and first poster - just want to say initially thanks for all the helpful hints, tips, software etc I've picked up from the forum.
However, I've recently got a problem that I can't seem to crack and wondered if anyone has any ideas. I've tried searching but to no avail.
Randomly (and often when browsing) 'Messaging' appears on the top bar (with 'Delete' and 'Menu' on the softkey bar (as if it had suddenly shifted to an email page) but the main portion of the screen remains frozen with whatever was going on before (i.e. the webpage, today screen or whatever). It'll happen a few times then Opera crashes, but it also happens with the phone on standby (not sure if Opera was still running).
If I hit 'Menu' then 'Reply' it comes up with the latest message from my Hotmail account. I'm running Windows Live as a push account I think it may be that triggering it when it starts to sync. Perhaps some sort of problem with Opera and Windows Live when they're both running?
I've not got any serious mods installed and didn't have this problem until recently. I've got the latest versions of Opera, Windows Live and have recently reflashed the ROM in case that was the problem but no such luck.
I'm going to disable the push email and see if it still happens then try uninstalling things to see if that stops it but any suggestions gratefully received if you've had a similar problem and have managed to solve it.
Brief spec:
WinMo 6.5 (latest official HTC ROM)
UK O2 network
Opera Mobile 10 Beta 2u (Ninja Duck enhanced, but it happened with the Opera official version too)
1% Battery mod
FInixNOverBatteryIconsOnly battery icon mod
sdkcerts for above
SmartPhone tracker (disabled - going to uninstall to check)
ive got the same issue with my stock att branded tilt2
hope someone knows whats causing this...
I'm now thinking it may be a memory shortage issue - last time it did it I checked on task manager and it said memory usage was 95%
It's only about 59% when I reboot so I can only assume that Opera or something is using an inordinate amount of system memory. No idea if that's it, though
HTC Imagio Too
Same problem with my HTC Imagio. Messaging just pops up randomly and for no reason. I believe, too, that it has something to do with the Hotmail push email, but it has not always done this, which is the real mystery.
I'm having the same thing happen. But when I hit the reply button, it just brings up a blank email with my address in the From line. I haven't noticed any increase in RAM though. To me, it's nothing more than a nuisance.
Same here, tmobile stock rom wm6.5.
But when I touch the center area the message tool bar goes away and I resumewhatever I was doing just fine, so I normally ignore this.
May have something to do with checking email. I don't have push (push for gmail still not good IMHO), but the phone is checking my two gmail accounts every 15 minutes.
I have this problem too, and can't stand it. Have push Hotmail via Windows Live, Sync "as items arrive" from 7am to 11pm.
I've also downloaded the HTC hotfix for SMS freezing (in case this is related somehow).
I searched for it and can't believe this hasn't been solved yet.
Same here.
I have had this problem since day one, about 5 months ago on my Tilt2. Grrr.
Same issue here.
I also have this issue.
I have observed this occur with 65% memory usage.
I can also confirm this occurs with POP3 email. I have 2 POP3 accounts and no push accounts.
It does not seem connection related, happens when connected via EDGE, 3G, & Wifi.
I am running an NRG wm6.5 ROM.
same problem here. was hoping to find a fix on here.
Same here, Verizon TP2 when I hit the messaging image, it just goes away. Using stock WinMo 6.5 rom with about 8 apps from OpenMkt. Device is pretty stable and other than above and very slow opening mail sometimes.
everyone has thais problem and no replies :-( I also have this problem
my phone freezes a lot when opening a new txt. I downloaded the hotfix sms fix from htc and when i go to install it it just says the hotfix is not compatible
I have a problem with mine regarding opening TXT messages in windows messaging app, not in the HTC txt app. When I close it, it just freezes then I have to hit the side button to reset....Anyone have a fix for this? Im running TMOUS windows 6.5
Same problem here. Although mine happens on both emails (pop and windows live) and text. Whenever I close any of them the messaging will pop up 5-30 seconds later.
Hopefully if we get enough people with the same problem someone will eventually find a solution!
EDIT: I'm running stock Verizon ROM with a couple minor mods (nothing that screws with messaging, other than the disable SMS sent popup)
Me 2
I too have the same issue with stock tmo 6.5 rom. I never noticed it with energy roms. I wonder if maybe he knows what could be causing this issue? Just an idea.

[Q] HTC Tilt 2 TouchFLO crashing due to contacts update

My AT&T HTC Tilt 2 is nearly a year old now, and I've recently run into a very irritating problem. Every time I try to use the "Update Now" feature (Contacts -> Updates and Events tab -> Menu -> Update Now) to update contacts' Facebook pictures and whatnot, the entire UI crashes and has to reload. No error messages or anything like that at all; the screen simply freezes for 15-30 seconds and the HTC Launching TouchFLO 3D screen comes up.
This issue has expanded to encompass any time I try to edit a contact (on that note, the "Link to Facebook account" button no longer does anything except cause TouchFLO to crash) or even open the Updates and Events tab.
I'm still using the same ROM that came with the phone (hard reset once or twice, so essentially the same thing), meaning Windows Mobile 6.5. Like I previously mentioned, I'm using the TouchFLO 3D UI (my attempt to update to the Sense UI went terribly).
Is there anything I can do to fix this, aside from hard resetting again? I've got a lot of contacts (more than will fit on my SIM card, in fact), and I'd really rather not go through all the steps of personalizing my phone for a third time if I don't have to. It'll be like November before I'm eligible for an upgrade with AT&T, so that's not a viable option right now, as much as I might like it to be.
Another side note: Using Windows Mobile Device Center, is there a way to basically copy all of my contacts and whatnot from my phone to my computer without adding in the contacts from Outlook? I'd really rather not deal with a bunch of random email addresses sitting in my phone's contact list. If this is possible, I may just try to use this method, hard reset, and then put the contacts back on the phone. The rest of the personalization isn't nearly as time-consuming as adding in another 80-ish contacts and then fixing the names of the ones I managed to fit onto the SIM card (because the SIM card saves them in the format of "Smith, John" in the last name field and nothing in the first name field...).
I've also got a 16GB microSD card, if that would be of any benefit in any of these endeavors.
Any and all help is appreciated! Thanks!
Any ideas?
Not sure about all your facebook issues, but a great, quick and easy program that can save and restore contacts anywhere (including your storage card, if you like) is PIM Backup:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1189061&postcount=1
I use it all the time since I flash daily and I NEVER have any problems restoring my 200+ contacts using PIM Backup.
