I installed WM6 last night after CID unlocking my s620 hoping for the excitement that i had when had my HTC Wizard upgraded to PDA VIET's cooked ROM of WM6. I wasn't impressed enough to keep it, so i would like to highlight what i had found, which might repeat what others already know.
WM6 Beta Pros:
1. It is faster, it feels faster
2. New Microsoft Word, Excel edit capabilities
3. Press and hold the key and you will get the symbols instead of pushing the FN key to create !#$% symbols for example
4. All the other frills of WM6
WM6 Beta cons:
1. Because this is a T-Mobile ROM, and I am using it for Rogers, the additional customization for T-mobile is useless to me
2. The joggr has to be reset to use it as scroll instead of the volume function that the DASH uses - Reg edit will fix this
3. For some reason, as noted in another thread, the keyboard search from the home screen doesnt work right. Instead it acts like a phone keypad. For example searching for a name to call - key 2 acts like ABC insetead of E!!
4. SNAPIN issue - will send SMS messages to the UK, costs you international monies - fix is to delete the folder
5. Incompatibilities with Blackberry connect
I went back to WM5 and I will wait for a newer or cooked rom of this. ITs not worth it to me to flip to WM6. Being that i was using WM6 for a long time on my HTC wizard, this version of WM6 is way more inferior on the DASH/s620 than when it was put togetehr for the wizard.
My recommendation is to wait for another release.
While your PROS are legit, I have to disagree with your CONS.
All of the CONS you list are easily fixed with the exception of 3 and 5. Many don't use Blackberry and #3 is one small inconvenience for a leaked ROM IMHO. When you compare it to having Word, Excel, and Power Point, it's a good trade off. #4 is still not entirely fixed by deleting that folder. On Cingular I still get the junk text message when booting my phone. THIS is what ruined it for me. Since I don't know what's causing it, I don't fully trust it.
I also went back to WM5 to be fair. The s620 FW is stable as hell and very fast. I wouldn't use the standard T-Mobile WM6 ROM once it's released due to the crap they are putting on it. I'll wait for a generic like Dopod or HTC before I upgrade again.
Man I liked the native Word and Excel support. I can't wait...

To solve the blackberry connect problem check out this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=294218&highlight=blackberry+connect
Actually you ahve very valid points, and i agree the stock 405.4 ROM on the S620 is super fast. This is the way i see it.
HTC Wizard
WM5 cooked rom to WM6 cooked rom ==> HUGE IMPROVEMENT
HTC S620
WM5 stock 405.4 rom to WM6 beta ==> Minimal improvement.
THis thread was just to warn that its not really worth a great deal to switch from an already great ROM.

nice summary. i'm going to wait for a nice cooked rom or offical one being installing it.
if it weren't for the SMS issue, I'd have stuck with it. I really liked the HTML email and the office apps.
But the official ROM is only a month or so away. If HTC releases this for the s620, it will be a great ROM...

There are easy workarounds for the keypad, and Doc2Go doesn't allow you to edit Office docs (does it?).
of course it does. but office in wm6 does not allow to create new docs.

Yes, please, for the love of God tell us the workaround!
i believe the workaround is to hold down on the keypad and let it cycle through the letters. it really doesn't take very long to get to the letter you need.
not a big deal imo.
Docs To Go is laggy IMHO on my Dash running WM5.

This is not the workaround. For example, we don't want the "4/s" key to represent "I,H,G". This key should just represent "s". This is what a QWERTY keypad is meant for (among other things)!

I guess this may differ since you don't have T-Mobile, but that functionality already exists in my Dash, Windows Mobile 5. I bought it 3 days ago and saw that tip on a site. It definitely helps not having to press the Alt key.

So when moving from AKU 3.3 to vanilla 6, I noticed some of the original ring tones were missing. One example is "oldphone". I know some others are missing as well, but do not recall the specific names. I extracted my SPB backup made under AKU 3.3, but for some odd reason it did not contain that specific tone. Is it hiding somewhere? I cant figure out why it wasnt part of the backup (it seems all other tones are there). Is there some way to decompile the 3.3 (or prior WM5) roms in order to extract those legacy tones?
Thanks in advance for assistance.

That sounds familiar - I think it's in 5, but it is not in 6 (at least not in the original vanilla 6). Perhaps some kind soul will make the old tones available to those of us that miss them.

I kept all ringtones from WM5. Tell me where to upload to - I'll do it tomorrow.
Best regards,
I'd like to get my hands on a few old ring tones as well.
If you email me the file, I will host it on my server for everyone to access.

Much appreciated!
So I'm curious, why did 'oldphone' come with my original HTC rom, yet crossbow was missing it? I would have figured it would be the other way around... Unless the 'vanilla' 6 was so stripped down that it lacked the additional rings...?
How are you liking that Black edition, BOZ? I'm planning to switch over just as soon as I can figure out a proper way to backup / restore my call history (so I don't lose them during the switch).
Thanks again.

All the WM6 roms are cooked bare bones roms and they are put together by the developers on here, so they choose which ringtones etc are on the roms, they pick only a few on the assumption that people will have their own to add anyway, and every bit of space saved is valuable. HTC use a fixed list and apply them to every WM5 rom, so it is easy for them to appeal to the masses.
I am very pleased with this rom and it runs perfectly with no problems whatsoever after applying all fixes and patches, it is much faster than WM5. I really notice when switching between applications, TomTom 6 which I use a lot is very fast now, do not forget that I have also upgraded the radio for a much improved reception with the phone.

Thanks for posting this! I meant to copy all of the ringers off of my device before upgrading the ROM. However, after I did a backup, made sure all the documents I needed had been synchronized with my computer (so I'd have them in at least two places), and got everything else ready I never even got the feeling like I was forgetting something...not until I went to change my ringtone...
Thank again!
Thanks for the WM5 tones. I was thinking of downgrading to get a copy of the tones. You saved me couple of hours

I don't understand why all WM6 ROMs comes without click sounds
There is CAB floating around the forum that fixes it, but I don't like it because it was done for another machine and got several misassigned sounds.
So, I've made two little CAB files:
- WM5_Sound_Scheme.CAB: the "old" sound scheme from Windows Mobile 5.
- WM6_Sound_Scheme.CAB: the "new" sound schemes from Windows Mobile 6 (IMHO, worse than the old one).
Both CABs are compatible with Windows Mobile 5 and 6. So, you can use the WM5 scheme under WM6 and viceversa!
The instructions are simple: Install the CAB in the Device (not Storage Card), then Soft Reset and you will experience the clicks in your machine among other sound events.
NOTE: If you install both CABs you can switch between schemas changing the next registry key followed by a Soft Reset:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Snd\Event\.Scheme = .WM5 to .WM6 (or viceversa)
Enjoy it!
UPDATE: 09/20/2007
Added new file called "WM6 Sound Scheme v2.cab". It's the WM6 Sound Scheme without the sound files inside the cabinet file. It uses the files from the WM6 ROMs so doesn't take storage room.
it's tested with the original HTC WM6 ROM's.
I think I know why the sounds dissapears in the WM6 ROM's. The usual WM6 sound scheme is stored in this registry key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Snd\Event]
"Curr0"=multi_sz:"alarm2", "", "alarm2", "default", "Empty", "alarm2", "infbeg", "infend", "infend", "", "", "", "alarm2", "infbeg", "infend", "infend", "alarm2", "", "", "voicbeep", "RecEnd"
But, since the second sound is blank (""), the registry key is cut and all the sounds that follows the first "alarm2" are missing.
To prevent this, the cabs I've made puts the word "Empty" instead of the "". Since there is not a sound file called "Empty", the fix is correct. Aditionally, I've added the "menu click" sounds that are deactivated by defect. The sound files comes with the CABs to ensure that they exists in the machine because some chefs deletes the "unused" sound files.
Please Chefs, take note of this for your future releases. Thanks.
thank you
thank you, I have been looking for this and I love the Wm6 sounds. keep up the good work.
Just a note, if you delete "alarm2" from "curr0" you can have a nice quiet wm6..if you like that.
Thanks, It went through my thoughts as well when going through these new cooked WM6 ROMs. Where is the clicking sound.

Good jobs, VivaErBetis. Thanks.
I actually love WM6 being quiet.
Do you have a reference to the scheme values assignments ( i.e. which sound coresponds to which event ) ?
Do the "clicks" etc slow down the device like system sounds and clicks always used to on WM2003 and WM5 devices?

Sorry, but haven't got this reference. I've searched in Internet without results. I know some of the assignations and guess the others using the HTC Universal Sound Fix, so the following information isn't 100% reliable.
There are 21 sounds:
01 - Message Box appearing: "alarm2" sound
02 - Machine Wake-Up / Application closed: unassigned (thanks God cause it's really annyoning)
03 - Critical condition ?: "alarm2" sound
04 - ?: "default" sound
05 - ?: unassigned
06 - Warning condition ?: "alarm2" sound
07 - infbeg ?: "InfBeg" sound
08 - infend ?: "InfEnd" sound
09 - infintr ?: "InfEnd" sound
10 - MenĂº open: unassigned, but it is "MenuPop" sound
11 - Menu option selected: unassigned, but it is "HWandSW" sound
12 - Application open ?: unassigned
13 - Question condition ?: "alarm2" sound
14 - netbeg ?: "InfBeg" sound
15 - netend ?: "InfEnd" sound
16 - netintr ?: "InfEnd" sound
17 - Startup ?: "alarm2" sound
18 - Window maximized ?: unassigned
19 - Window minimized ?: unassigned
20 - Record start ?: "VoicBeep" sound
21 - Record end ?: "RecEnd" sound

Maybe. The scheme will be used even if there are not sounds assigned to it but, if there are sounds, them must be also played. In my case, I haven't appreciated any slowdowness using the correct schemes. But, who knows.

one question for you...
What values should be in hklm\snd\event\curr0? Mine currentlyonly has alarm2 with nothing after it. Is that correct?
After discussions with Sleuth255, I've done some further testing on the registry settings and found some optimum settings for A2DP. These are applicable to the newer releases of WM6.
Finding #1:
ADD/CHANGE the following values from the registry at HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Bluetooth\A2DP\Settings :
Name: UseJointStereo
Value (DWORD): 1
What this does is enable Joint-Stereo for the SBC codec, which is important and makes the biggest significant change to improve sound quality. (Note: In earlier versions of WM5 and WM6, Joint-Stereo was broken and resulted in a mono-output. This is not the case anymore with the newer WM6 ROMS.)
Further note: Sleuth255 found that some of his A2DP headsets could not work with JS turned on. In that case, you have to set the value to 0 to disable JS (resulting in poorer quality sound with more "hissing").
Finding #2:
REMOVE the following values from the registry at HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Bluetooth\A2DP\Settings if they are present:
- BitPool
- MaxSupportedBitPool
These values are used to manually set limits for the BT stack for the A2DP SBC codec. Previously, it was thought that these values should be set between 38 to 86. But if the values are removed, I think that the BT stack automatically chooses the best BitPool values for maximum quality. I've tried removing these values and the sound quality either improved or at least stayed the same.
[ SUMMARY ]
At this point, you should have only one value in the registry at HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Bluetooth\A2DP\Settings:
UseJointStereo = 1
Your A2DP audio should be very good at this point - almost indistinguishable from a wired headset. However, if you are still unsatisfied with the sound (you may notice some very slight "hissing" or "swishing" sounds on high frequencies of certain songs), you may want to try the optional setting below.
[ OPTIONAL ]
Finding #3:
This is optional, and a matter of preference.
ADD the following value to the registry at HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Bluetooth\A2DP\Settings:
Name: SampleRate
Value (DWORD): 48000 (decimal)
This forces the A2DP stack to send the audio to the headset at 48000Hz instead of the default 44100Hz. For some reason, I find that the 48Khz value makes the "hissing" sounds less obvious. Your findings may vary, as some people may prefer the slightly more forward sound of the original setting. But if you are game, give this a try - one thing for sure is that it definitely changes the sound quality.
To reverse the change, just remove the SampleRate value.
If you make this 3rd optional change, you should have the following values in the registry at HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Bluetooth\A2DP\Settings:
UseJointStereo = 1
SampleRate = 48000
[ Note - Quick tip on registry editing ]
Of course, every registry change needs a soft-reset to take effect. And please take the usual proper care when editing the registry or risk damaging your device.
Find that your settings dont "stick" after a reset?
Make sure you reset the phone like this: After making changes to the registry, exit your registry editor. Then press and hold the power button of your phone for about 5 seconds, a window should pop up asking you if you want to shutdown your phone (click Yes). Once the phone has shut down, press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the phone starts up again.
Happy listening! BTW, I find that Mortplayer is an excellent MP3 player to use with A2DP. It works well with the control buttons on my headset.
Tried steps one and two... YAY! *throws away wired headset* Thanks guys!
Well just when i thought my headset was sounding banging. now im gonna try this. Hope this helps. And awesome job on the findings guys.
Yeah.... I remember that about bitpool/maxbitpool. Back when A2DP first came out on the Tornado we never set any of these. No values lets it dynamically adjust.
These are great settings btw.
Well I thought I was happy with my audio but I've just applied the tweaks and I'm listening to my favourite tracks and the improvement is great. youre right, the hiss has gone and although I hadnt thought it that noticeable before, this is so much cleaner.
I have the latest lsvw rom and and am running the new htc audio manager and I didn't think I would ever hear bass on my tytn!
And now I'm listening to my favourite Stevie Wonder track on wmv lossless in WMP and its fab!!!
Interestingly, I've just checked the reg settings after soft reset and the SampleRate key is gone!
I'll reapply it, soft reset and see what happens.
Many thanks for the info.
This time the samplerate stuck and it even better!
Thanks much, this is outstanding!

We'd have to graft the entire bt stack onto WM5.... not an impossible task I suppose but not an easy one either....
Great work on this, hardcore.
Well done Hardcore!!!!!!!
I have personally never had problems with quality on A2DP.
Sleuth 255 provided the fix with the earlier WM5 OS.
From AKU 3.3.1 the only registry fix was to set the Joint Stereo to 0
I had no problems with WM6 but the later releases definately had great improvements to the total BT stacks.
Well I am always ready to try new work by the members and respected cooks on this Forum.
Your work on the A2DP has blown me away!
The sound is phenominal to say the least.
I use Nokia HS-12W and HTC BH S100 BT Stereo headsets and both are great. But I must admit that the Nokia has the edge all round. Connect and all functions work great. With the HTC I always have to reset the "set as handsfree"connection to pick to the phone side through BT. The A2DP connects automatically. Just a small issue but irritating.
I could not do your edits with Resco and then tried TaskManager reg editor.
The changes would not stick on soft resetting using the phones reset switch.
Eventually I twigged that I could make the changes stick by using the TaskManager reset button in the program.
Thanks for the info. - this is really what XDA is all about!
Keep up the good work and I repeat the call for a cab fix. This will make your fix non lethal to noobs who are not fimiliar with reg editing.
Hi Hardcore,
Is Core2.0 considered a later WM6 ROM? Coz, Setting UseJointStereo to 1 does get rid of the hissing but unfortunately it also get rid of the Stereo on my Wizard...
Halleluja! PTL!!
Excellent discovery, hardcore. After months of experimentation and cussing and swearing, this is the closest that my TyTN/Logitech FreePulse combo has come to perfect stereo audio. Still not as good as when I paired the FreePulse with an HP iPAQ with the Widcomm stack, but pretty damn close. I still get pops and clicks, which was new with WM6, but no skips or other artifacts. And I was almost ready to give up and look for another pair of BT headphones.
Interestingly, I did try removing the BitPool and MaxSupportedBitPool settings at some point during my experimentation, but this was either with an earlier WM6 build or with WM5.0, and the net result was no audio at all.

Hi new2city,
What you described is the behaviour of the older ROMs. In the newer ROMS, you should get real stereo sound with UseJointStereo=1.
These are the Hermes WM6 ROMs I have tried which have the "good" A2DP: Black 2.5/3.0/3.0.1, CUSTEL 2.5, LVSW 05-07 and newer LVSW derivatives.
excellet work .... no hissing now
how do i fix this??
anyway when connected with A2DP mode, all incoming call ringtone will play to the stereo headset and the phone will not ring at all, (its as though the ringtone is diverted to the phone)
but if i switch it to headset mode (not A2DP), the ringtone will play on the phone and the headset with play a beep sound for incoming call.
I want it to be connected to a2dp and yet the ringtone still ring on my dopod phone...

Hi Hardcore,
Just one question, in the Hermes, do you have the usual bluetooth dlls? SBC.dll, bta2dp.dll and so on? If so, any chance to upload them? I asked this before once almost a year ago but no one offered them... sigh...
Downloading Custel to hopefully extract the files.. gonna take a while...

Just one question, in the Hermes, do you have the usual bluetooth dlls? SBC.dll, bta2dp.dll and so on? If so, any chance to upload them? I asked this before once almost a year ago but no one offered them... sigh...
Downloading Custel to hopefully extract the files.. gonna take a while...
thanks anyway.

Yes the sbc.dll and a2dp.dll exist in the ROM. However, I dont know how to copy them out from the ROM. Attempts to do it using Total Commander and Activesync have failed.
Got the dll's out of the Custel ROM I downloaded but unfortunately, I can't seem to replace the versions in my running rom as the files can't be overwritten OR copied in the windows folder. Any guys with a clearer picture willing to lend a hand. Been trying to fix this since I joined this forum...
KDSkamal WM5 Ultimate edition
Contents of the package: OS only
AKU:3.5
Storage Memory:>35.7MB
Some highlights of the ROM..
1) Internet Explorer mobile supports high resolution mode
2) Windows Live Messenger: Please set up the date to the current date. Otherwise, this won't connect and will give you error
3) Clean ROM: No stupid pics, sounds, video(no Dogbarks or alike)
4) Adobe Reader LE: Yes, since universal is a business device, this is a must-have. Works great on our VGA screens
5) Many no-nonsense, useful apps are already built in. They are..
a)UI Tweaker:full package
b)WM5Storage
c)En Alarm:an mp3/wma alarm clock
d)TCPMP(yay!)
e)Pocket RAR
f)Playlist Editor:create/edit playlist on the device itself
g)PIM Backup(v2.5)(latest ATM)
h)Group SMS(by Shaileshashar)
6) Elegant default theme+vista(like) Windows Media player skin
7) No bubble breaker game, but, 'classic' Solitaire is still there
8) New sounds and notifications
Note: adobe reader LE is in the Office folder
Thanks to..

PreethaLK: thanks for testing
Indra: my nice buddy from Indonesia
Beast0898 + Maimach: these guys brought my device back to life when it was on its way to the Graveyard
Shaileshashar: Thanks to this guy for giving me the permission to his app. Also, BIG thanks to him for providing me the Windows.Form.Outlook DLL(without this, this app would not have worked). Please visit his website here for more goodies

Xcillion: Thanks for giving the permission buddy to use his wmp skin

one bug: en_alarm is not able to register the alarm. So, don't count on it. Use your own alarm clock. I'm investigating this bug ATM
suggestion to the users: please make sure that you're either using 1.14 or 1.15 radio with this ROM in order to avoid the 'notification' problem

I have not included it
Looks very nice. I'm using the WM6 roms but if I happen to consider rolling back to WM5 I'll definitely try this one.
Question: Do sim contacts appear as regular contacts in this rom? I had a problem with the latest O2 rom that I could only access sim contacts through the sim manager.
How about video call???

About the black theme. Could you be so kind as to look into the following registry and let us know the DECIMAL VALUE you used to make it so black. Please.
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Color\"BaseHue" (Decimal Value)

very nice WM5 rom~
i can tell, this is the best rom i hv ever seen
bt sound quality can be perfectly compare with WM6
but if u can restore those icon like the battery status, comm manager, screen rotation, that will be more convenient for me
anyway , perfect roms, thanks !
i use KDSkamal WM6 Beautifull Edition. It is pure perfection !!!
there are some minore problems with the secured wi-fi, bluetooth headsets, but i love it and i will stick to it.
this WM5 should have everything working, right?
we should be able to use video call, add new email account, browse secured wi-fi, use bluetooth hendsfree, use voice dial etc, right?
is it 100% working, just like an official WM5 upgrade?

Thanks for your compliment again Hewlit! Nice when someone appreciates you
Yes, everything is working just the way it should
Voice dial has not been included by me, so you ll have to use, what you use (eg:MS voice command, cyberon voice dial etc)

Restoring them is very easy. If you do a simple reading at the universal wiki, you may be able to find that out by simply changing some values in the registry.
I m at my work ATM, so, if I get sometime, I ll make the CABs
please help
