HTC Touch Pro? - HTC Excalibur

Anyone ever heard of this device? Basically, it appears that its a touch diamond with a sliding keyboard. Notice i didnt say qwerty keyboard as it has a 5th row of keys that have the numbers on the top row, similar to a PC keyboard. And it also appears it has 4 arrow keys as well, the only major thing it doesnt seem to have is a 10-key, so it more resembles most laptop keyboards (although signifigantly smaller) sooo...... here's to me hoping t-mobile releases this device, expected to be released in Q4 in north america and latin america. here's a little article i found about it, with one pic in the article
http://blogs.zdnet.com/mobile-gadgeteer/?p=1155

I'm looking forward to this device as well. I have been waiting patiently for something new? Is this going to work with tmo 3g?

Ya I think it should by the way, I think that the 3G might be delayed for a while longer, thats what I heard from a Tmobile Representative.

It sure looks nice, but that's the problem for me. I couldn't keep one of those new, piano-black phones in good-looking condition for long. That's one BIG reason I like the DASH.

Agreed, I work in the elements for a living. I have to keep my phone in the van or my pocket, so one of these things would look like crap in about a month, and that's if I tried really hard.

yah thats true, its hard to keep the dash looking nice to lol...

this touch pro is a relief. when i learned of the touch diamond not having an external memory slot, i felt it was not worth it. but the touch pro DOES have it, which is a huge plus along with the slide keyboard. but now i noticed in the specs that the touch pro's colours are 65,536 compared to the touch diamond with 262,144. what the hell's all that about??? now im once again discouraged because of this difference. still would test drive it though.
oh and by the way, use the dash for primary use, and the touch series for "pimpin" occassions. hahaha... that would help keep your new phone lookin clean.

T-Mobile MDA Compact IV:

It's the HTC diamond with keyboard codename raphael. The regular diamond is pokey from what I have read about it so far. Engadget or Gizmodo has one, they aren't happy.

Touch Sceren Dash??? Possible?

Ok so I've had a Dash for about a year. I'm always installing new software and everything trying to come up with new ways to like my phone but I'm sooooo bored. I'm low on cash so I can't really buy a new phone but would it be possible to make the Dash/Excalibur/S620 a touch screen phone? If so, how?
sorry to say, but i think that it's like mission impossible.

I figured that. I was hoping I could get another screen or somehting. I'm disappointed in T-Mobile USA. We're getting passed up. All the other companies are getting nre phones and we're still trying to push the sidekick. All the good T-Mobile phones are in the UK. I wish I could get my hands one of those without paying out the wazoo for it.

Its called eBay T-Mo US is holding out till the new 3g is up, then they will pull out the new phones is my guess.
Yah thats true they will come out with some nice phones, I have heard of the Shadow II and a possible Shadow III
...and let's not forget...the rumored Dash 2.
They would be wise to make a follow up to the dash with how popular and successful the dash is. I've had the sidekick and was disappointed cause of the lack of features. This is the best phone i've had ever!
yea I really hope they release a DAsh 2...I have absolutely NO interest in a shadow 1 2 or 3...I like a full keypad.
extra points if for the Dash 2 they go the route of the Centro and have it touch screen and key ridden.

I still rather have the keyboard then a touch screen. Touch screen in my opinion kinda sucks I guess, I used to have the wing and it sucked with the touch screen.
I'm pretty comfortable with the Dash now. I absolutely must have a keypad but I would also sometimes like to use a touchscreen. My nephew has a HTC Touch and I was working with him installing software and doing some Bluetooth file transfers. That little stylus seemed to pretty useful for quick device navigation.
I hope there's a phone released with WM7. That looks like it could kick the iPhone's arse. I wanna get a new phone or make me like the one I have more.

wait or not.

I currently own the ATT Tilt but its time to get a new phone. I am debating on if I should wait and get the Touch Pro2 or just get the Touch Pro.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for your time
i'd just get a touch pro and use the manila from the TP2
i don't see anythiong hardware wise, apart from the screen, that would compel me to upgrade.
But which OS
What I'm interested to know is which Microsnot OS will they have on them. I have seen some articles where there is mention they may run 6.5.
It will be extemely interesting to see what the XDA chefs do with them once they get their cooky little hands on them
Personally I would be waiting.
I would say wait as i'm kind of in the same boat as you are in (however i solidified my decision when the Fuze came out and wanted to save my contract for the "next big thing"). I'll more than likely get this and hope to be the first person in line for it

Both the Rhodium and Topaz will ship with 6.1, and (the HTC branded ones at least) will get a free upgrade to 6.5 when its released.

If you have the money, feel free to buy one
i recently got me an Epix to hold me over till this badboy comes out.
Hey looks like the perfect kiaser/tilt replacement had the money for the touch pro but i guess im going to wait now think you should 2
I too am waiting on this bad boy to drop. Thought about the exeda but am going for this one first
The only real reason I think to get a Touch Pro / Fuze right now is because you simply like it looks more. The Touch Pro 2 will be a bit bigger and clearly look different.
But the Touch Pro 2 is the superior phone, so if you could pick a Touch Pro / Fuze now on contract, or wait a few months till you get it's follow up on contract... I will always choose for the Touch Pro 2 .
Yes yes, all the efforts being made in the ROM development will make A LOT of the new cool stuff in the Touch Pro 2 available to the Touch Pro 1... but still, I like the device more. More resolution, tad bigger screen (which makes entering text without having to flip open the keyboard easier), The slide-out qwerty can tilt like in your Kaiser / Tilt now, it has better speakers for speaker-phone mode.
I'm a Diamond user, so clearly not into the enterprise / corporate thing for my phone, but I always thought the Touch Pro was just a Diamond with QWERTY thrown in, while the Touch Pro2 clearly has a bit more to make it a business phone over the Diamond2.

They sell it in Taiwan already? How much approx?
I will definately wait for the TP2 as an upgrade from my TyTN.
The wait for T-Mobile NL to get it is quite long tho (approx. June)
thats not that bad might come to the us in sep hoping it gets here faster a looooooot faster
This is definitely one of the best designed of the recent HTC devices.
Odd that it didn't get the Touch HD's 5MP camera unit?
I got my Tilt (I think) about a month after it came out on AT&T. According to myATT I can upgrade at the beginning of September. Since there is no way that I can afford one of those mobiles without subsidized pricing I will be forced to wait until then. The rumours that I've heard indicate that the TP2 will be out then. So for me there's really no question of which mobile to get. The reasons that I prefer the TP2 over the TP: The screen. I have gotten so used to the tilting screen that I really don't want a phone without one. The 3.6" WVGA screen should make web browsing that much better also. Since software doesn't matter that much (thanks to the dedicated hackers of xda devs ), I would just like at the hardware.
Wait
I'd would wait.... the bigger screen, battery, and higher resolution is enough to wait for and hopefully HTC's proposal of a "Global" release means that every carrier gets TP2 at the same time.. check out the link to Sprint's 2009 line up ..... Pro 2 or Hero?

I just recently bought a Palm Pre and returned it, hated it! So I bought the touch pro knowing it cam out almost a year ago (impulse buy). Now I am just curious, I know the touch pro 2 is coming to sprint, but its rumored that the hero will be out for sprint later this year, possibly December. Which one should i wait for?

+ one is android and other WM, usually a big difference depending on what you like.
That will depend on what is for you need the device
TP2: Buissness oriented device with the second best physical keyboard (1st is from Universal)
Hero: Multimedia oriented device with an OS tha promises a lot in the future, by now it needs to grow up and madurate
Welcome to my world, all these damn phones coming out, Hero I like however things I dont like are the shape, imagine that in your pocket? "Are you pleased to see me or is that a HTC Hero in your pocket?" and as the person above mentioned, lack of keyboard.
White doesnt stay clean for long either.

Haha, yeah I know, keyboard is a big deal to me. It's just WM seems to disappoint me a lot. Although I have high hopes for 6.5, I'm thinking sprint is waiting for 6.5 to release to touch pro 2, it would make it all that better!
But still, functionality versus a keyboard, I don't know! haah
I know what you mean about WM, but HTC have done a great job of masking the dull and boring monolike OS with Touchflo from what I have seen and WM 6.5 looks like a vast improvement at least visually.
Personally I think you, like me, would probably get bored of Android and the touch screen keypad would drive me nuts in the end.
I tried typing on an Iphone 3GS yesterday to get a (improved) idea of what a Diamond 2 or Hero might be like and with my fingers theres no chance I would type quickly on that ever, it would be like trying to look behind you without moving your head.
TP2 is the way to go, however the Omnia Pro is coming soon too, but then the Nvidia Tegra chipset powered HTC HD sequal is comign - I cant decide either, phones are like PC graphics cards these days.

the shape is virtually the same as the G1, and I've never heard anyone complain about any discomfort when they put the G1 in their pocket. and there may not be a hardware KB, but as far as onscreen KB's go, it looks like the Hero's will be one of best so far. and I like how the screen is capacitive and thus supports multi touch.
personally, I'm getting the TP2 when it comes out on AT&T. I'm also planning on picking up an unlocked Hero (unless it finds its way to the states, specifically AT&T). just want something else to play around with
Please buy both. Both has different strength, features & abilities. Both are totally different. I hope i will get one if god willing
For me it will be the one with the biggest screen & WM on it...TP2!

Yeah but the hero has a capacitive screen right? or am I wrong about that? Im actually not sure but I would think that it does because all the other android ones by HTC ara capacitive
Edit: I checked and im pretty sure its capacitive but I just browsed through search results
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530600
The same question has been haunting me lately too. I've been waiting forever for the TP2 to come to AT&T and now I see this. If they end up having release dates close together I'm thinking I might go with the hero. The main thing that will bother me is the lack of keyboard since I'm coming from a Kaiser (Tilt).

Agreed, but there's one big difference. You can get an upgrade discount on phones once every 1.5 years, otherwise you're paying out your A$$. Graphics cards are always the same (usually relatively lower) price.

Yeah you seem like you have the same thoughts as I do. I think you're right about getting tired with the android phone. I love messing with WM and modding it. I know you can with android, but it will have its limits. The thing about touch pro 2 not being a capacitive touch screen, it bums me out and makes me ask why they won't do this with WM yet. I can say they have been improving their resistive screens, big difference from the mogul to the touch pro, so I hope they can do that again. I am definitely leaning toward the touch pro 2. Does anyone know why they won't go with the capacitive screen on WM or touch pro 2?

This is exactly why I'm shying away from the TP2 and leaning towards the Hero or the Magic. The sheer idea of there being opportunities where I might need to resort to the stylus are completely holding me back. Guess I'll have to actually play with one before I make my decision; but, since using the capacitive touchscreen (iphone/G1), I'm not sure I can go back.

The resistive screen is one of the selling points for me, especially one as finger-friendly as TP2s. Best of both worlds. I get easy navigation without having to constantly sheath and unsheath the stylus, but I can use a compact and conveniently tucked away stylus when needed. I very much doubt I'll ever need it for the basic interface, but with some apps I'll want it. My Palm TX has been my primary Chinese-English dictionary for some time (before it, my Palm T|T and m500 served the same purpose), and the same software is available for WinMo. I'd just as soon use a stylus for character recognition. For that matter, I'd just as soon use a stylus for handwritten memos. I imagine capacitative screen users get by on both fronts just fine, but for me, I'm glad there's a good resistive screen still available.

So far with my TP2, I have not used the stylus at all and I am a pretty heavy business user, thats emails, facebook, youtube, general browsing and posting on forums, stock, sms.
Whats more I have yet to use the actual qwerty keyboard aswell, I find the touch one good enough everytime unless I'm typing a huge email or document.
My advice is go and actually look at the Diamond 2 and TP2 in the flesh, it is totally different to looking at it on the internet, it really is a quality product.

sorry to burst your bubble, sir, but the TP2 doesn't support multi touch. that luxury is reserved for devices that have a capacitive display. and while the TP2 feels like it's capacitive, it isn't. the Hero, on the other hand, IS capacitive and therefore the screen supports multi touch

Touch Pro 2 or HD2?

Hi,
I live in Sydney, Australia.
I've owned a HTC Topaz until i sold it to my dad to upgrade to a better HTC phone.
I'm tossing up between waiting until the 11th of November and ordering the HTC HD2 from www.clove.co.uk or to purchase a Touch Pro 2 from ebay.
I just require general advice on which would be a better investment.
Background:
Engineering Student, requiring a smartphone that can organise a busy lifestyle and last a few years without hassles.
Thanks,
Harry.
HD2 without a doubt. plus the specs garantee that it wont be outdated in a while... unlike the TP2 since a 528 CPU will only take you so far
depends if you need a Keyboard mostly
Thanks Mike, that was one hell of a quick response.
After the Topaz I was itching for a keyboard, but i think you're right.
The snapdragon processor will last quite some time and it outweighs my need for a keyboard.
I'm sure HTC can fit a decent touch keyboard on a 4.3 inch screen.
Plus if you're ever doing major work on it, you can just buy a bluetooth keyboard for it.
Still don't know about the capacitive touch screen. Most devices I've played with that have them seem to be too sensitive and at the same time less accurate.
I wish they were releasing the HD2 in the US.
Could i get one more piece of advise please - which site would be the best to buy the HD2?
Reasonable postage + pricing would be great.

the keyboard on the TP2 is great...have used onscreen keyboards for the last 5 years and now would not go back ...if you do a lot of text input (emails etc) then go a TP2 plus the business slant is great for organising work and play... the real question should be, want a real keyboard or not... the speed of text input will out play any gain by the faster processor of the HD2... now a HD2 with a TP2 type keyboard & under 170 gms... that would be a killer device
No hardware kwyboard
Not an option for me
TP2 is the best hardware keyboard device to this date
I have the TP2 from Telstra and really like the phone. It has the keyboard which is the main reason for me choosing it. Apart from this, the phone's screen is big and bright. And the performance is snappy. What I don't like is the Telstra theme. But I have changed to a Hero theme which I am very pleased with. So all in all, I am happy with my choice.
HD2 is just a TP2 with out a keyboard (as bloggers who have it are saying)
Ok you get a more ram with the HD2 and a thin device (kinda)
But you pretty much just between Keyboard + touchscreen or no keyboard and full touchscreen
at the end of the day its up to you. pick what you want.. remember your on a forum with users who have both devices and going to stand behind they phone and defend it so all you going to hear is users with HD2 saying "GET THE HD2" and users with TP saying the same thing
actually , i use the hardware kwyboard rarely...
but it looks cool , so i choose TP2
HD2 its in a league of its own. Its super fast and responsive. If you want to have great performance and impress your friends go for the HD2. I want the TP2 for the keyboard.
PS: The HD1 has the requirements for an upgrade to Windows Mobile 7, so that might be a plus too.

No matter what phone I move to and when, the one thing I'm going to hold on to is the keyboard from my TP2....I fully intend to frankenstein it onto any device I may use in the future

Me And My Friend Was Talking Yesterday And He Said He Wants The Touch Pro 3 To Be The HD2 Screen/Specs With The Touch Pro 2 Keyboard. I Think That Would Make Me Come Back. But The Touch Pro 2 Is Not Fast Enough For Me. I Wish It Could Be Overclocked.
HTC Desire already preordered...
I'll certainly miss the awesome hardware keyboard and tilting screen.
Problem with the TP2 is not the hardware for me. It's just WinMo. I've been on this platform ever since my Touch Dual a couple years ago and I know it's very capable. But the platform is outdated.
I hope WinMo7 turns out to be as revolutionary as M$ claims it will be. In the meantime, I'll be jumping ship to Android for now...
The Nexus One did it. I sold my X1 for a tilt2 after the t-mobile only Nexus one was announced. It took about 45 minutes for me to pick up one of the AT&T Nexus Ones after it was announced today. I've been running Android recently to see how I liked it, and it wins for me over WinMo.
I'm willing to adopt any Windows Phone Series 7, keyboard or not. I say calm down on all the phones now, b/c the whole landscape as we know it will be changed by 1/1/11..
but yeah, this elusive TP3 would be nice..since a WPS7 phone can have a keyboard as seen by the LG, hopefully they're holding off for that..
im going to consider an hd2 in the future. i was thinking to get it much sooner, but ill wait a bit for the prices to come down. the tmo version has a really low price and should lower the price of the t9193. if i do, i will miss the keyboard and the speaker. but damn, that screen. it could make an iphone user commit suicide.

That could only be proven with thorough, extensive testing. And then more testing. In fact, here, let me give you a hand with that
I am actually considering the AT&T compatible Nexus One. If it had a keyboard I wouldn't have to even think about it.
I am torn between the HD2 and the Desire. I haven't given up on WinMo yet, although I am disheartened by what I have seen of Windows Phone 7.
I also have a Toshiba TG01 which, although a flawed device, has convinced me that my next phone must have a 1GHz Snapdragon or better.
HD2
I definitely need something with a little more processor, so I've been thinking about the HD2. I will miss the keyboard some, but I've got so used to using swype, I don't think I'll miss it that much.
I really like my TP2, but I've even more so loved the Android OS - even though it doesn't totally work. If I could get an Android OS phone, with front cam, back cam, wifi, BT, FM radio w/ RDS, and a physical kb, I'd sell the TP2 in a heartbeat. I'm so over the winmo OS, and the new microsoft version doesn't look any better. Android OS please!
I love my Rhodium tooooooooo much to move onto another device.
When the time comes to renew my contract I'll probably get an HD2.
But I'll use my Rhodium as a phone. And the HD2 as a toy
i like my tp2. but as soon as us cellular gets something with more speed and not windows 7. ill be jumping ship. prob to android. ive read all the findings at mix 10 on windows 7. and i will be goin to android. windows 7 looks great. but its lockd down. and all they stopped us from doing with it. its not worth the wait. so bye bye wmo.
T-Mo HD2 next week will be replacing my TP2 which replaced my G1 which replaced my Wing.
Looks like a 6 month cycle.
I wish VZW would come out w/ the HD2...I might go with the Nexus one or this thing:

I also like the HTC Incredible for vzw, it looks like HD2 hardware w/ android. Most likely i'll keep the keyboard and go w/ a saygus if anything (although chances are I wont get a new phone)
I keep looking at the Droid. Figure I'll wait a few months, see what shakes out with (if) the 6.5 update, and then move over to the Droid. I'm out of contract now with Sprint, and they don't seem particularly to care if people leave.
I am getting the HD2 for sure, I will keep my TP2 just to mess around with it but I have tested the Tmo HD2 a few times at my local store and I love it. I am just watching the time tick by until next Wednesday and I will be joining you in the NRG HD2 forum
TP3 only!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have until Summer 2011 before I can upgrade my Touch Pro 2, bear in mind though I kept my Tytn II for 3 and a half years because nothing else fitted form factor wise. I like the fact my screen tilts and the keyboard is phenomenal. It may be a while after my upgrade date it may not be, not forgetting that by then WP7 Series should have fixed all the alleged release issues such as no multi-tasking and no copy and paste, no side loading 3rd party apps, no full USB connectivity, no sd card loading......the list of faults with WP7 series so far is shocking.
