Start playing with WM5, or upgrade to WM6 first? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

I recently purchased an AT&T 8525 and am interested in upgrading it a bit.
I don't really want to do anything extravagant with it (yet). I was planning on using Battery Status, HTC Home, and possibly HHC to start with. If all goes well, I may continue to pimp out my 8525 a bit more after.
I guess my question is more of a matter of opinion, but here it goes:
I was wondering if you guys thought it would be more wise to keep WM5 and start using these files (maybe because they are more stable w/ this OS, or because there is a wider selection, I'm not sure)...
OR
Maybe I should just go ahead and upgrade to WM6 and work with the more recent versions of the programs I was looking for on my phone.
I apologize in advance for my noobness!

Read, read and read.
Once you have read, and you know what you are doing, then go straight for WM6. WM5 is slow.

agovinoveritas is right.
Moreover,
if you are really new to Windows Mobile devices,
I suggest you to stay with the WM5 and study / feel it first.
Then you may find WM6 how tasty it is. ^_^
enjoy~~ ^_^

I bought my imate jasjam in October 2006 and used WM5 for about 8 months then I got bored of it. May be it is better to play with WM5 first and when you are going for the upgrade. Try to get the original ROM handy with you. But remember upgrading need some wise thinking and reading. So no more noobness while doing so.

Upgrade to WM5.0, Reassurence needed! N00b!

(reposted in correct forum)
Hi folks,
I was interested in upgrading to WM5.0 from WM2003 on my SPV M2000 (=XDA 2???I'm told it's a blue angel...). However since I've come here i've got the impression that it could be riddled with problems. I'm a total n00b and I've been overwhelmed with different ROM versions and fixes....I wondered if you folks could help me a bit.
Is it worthwhile to upgrade? What has your experience been?
Will old WM2003 programs work on WM5.0 (I have loads of them)
Are there any bugs I should know about or will everything run smooth?
What are the disadvantages?
How do I go about upgrading? I upgraded my ROM once before using an update released by Orange. But the .exe file did it all for me. All I had to do was connect the device via the cradle and click next (pretty much).
Cheers folks! Much appreciated.

PS - is this the correct forum? (I'm guessing SPVM2000 is a hymalaya)
PPS - sorry if some of these questions have come up before. I'm sure a few of them must - I checked as best I could but I'm a total n00b and I'm dyslexic which doesn't make post plodding easy.
Thanks again!
help please! Some of you guys must have some ideas or thoughts that might help me!
Like you I also have an SPV M2000 (yes it is also known as the Blue Angel), and I am still running WM2003, I have done a few ROM upgrades etc so have a very basic understanding but even so am still holding back on upgrading to WM5, my main reason is that my phone is for work, and so need it to be reliable. saying that it sounds like that they have done some fantastic work porting WM5 onto the Blue Angel and one day I look forward to running it (which may be very soon).
Sounds like to me though before making your decision you should read this..

As with any upgrade there is a chance you will turn your device into a brick, so you need to read thorugh all the previous posts, there is a search tool to allow you to search the forum (USE IT!), I am sure people here would love to help you but have a bit of respect and search the forum first, I expect every question you could think of has been answered before.
Somewhere there is a list of software that has been tested on WM5, cant be bothered to search for it, but I have seen a post on the forum somewhere!
EDIT:
Sorry didn't read the bottom part of you post, that will teach me!! Hope the links I have given you get you started though!!!
Dont bother with WM2005 yet. I tried it a month ago and found little glitches. Overall it was good, but eyecandy doesnt justify the upgrade. Speedwise it's the same.
Also, there's still not as many WM5 programs, as there are for WM2003. Old progs may have issues with WM5. For me that's reason enough to stick with WM2003, since I need stability.
If you hard reset your phone, install only progs that you really need AND use, you'll be amazed how quick and stable it'll be. Yes, BT and WiFi are flaky, but that happens right across the board on all OSes/ROMs.
PS. Avoid any crap that goes onto Today screen.

I agree! It's just to damn buggy.

Just got a Cingular 8525 need help upgrading.

Ok I just bought an unlocked Cingular 8525 today. I am using it on T-Mobile. Just upgraded my account so I have the unlimited internet addon. And now someone told me I just upgrade WM5 to WM6 and gave me a link to this site. I have been reading stuff on here all day. But I am still kinda confused. I can't really find the WM6 for T-Mobile ROMs. I found This. But I don't think it is the WM6 upgrade. Could someone please point me in the right direction. Also I plan on doing the upgrade route were I put the HERMIMG.nbh on my memory card and upgrade it like that.
Thanks for any help!
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Hermes
start by going to the wiki..read all of that, and you should be fine.
I have read different sections of the wiki. I just bumped into something and it looks like there aren't specific ROMs that I need to look at to upgrade to WM6 is this correct? If I get one of These 11 different ones will any of them work? Thats what I think I am seeing. If I do need a specific one please let me know.
Thanks for the quick reply.

I'm assuming you are talking US T-mobile. There is no ROM dedicated for Tmob-US yet. Keep reading. Some topics to search for...HARD-SPL, Pof sim unlocker, LVSW, Schap, Sleuth, black, vp3g, ELF. There are many variants. Do your homework. Take your time. Read the wiki.
And try them!
I have tried LVSW, Sleuth, Faria, Black and Custel.
I play with each for a few hours or a few days.
No better way to see how you like it than to try it out on your device.
Jim
I smell a brick coming... dont read SOME of the WIKI read the WHOLE HERMES section.. until you completely understand what it is you need to do.

Would that be a good guide to help me through the upgrading process?
It's a good guide.
Read the wiki though, especially the 'common problems...' and 'upgrading' parts.
You don't want a brick.

Quoted for Emphasis!!!

Best WM6 ROM to upgrade to for someone who NEED IDEAS!! but is open to ALL opinion

Simple question I want all opinions, I just got my 2nd 8525, and this time I am gonna do it RIGHT!! (last 1 i had I was super n00b and kiled it within 48hrs I cried for a week) Anyways I just want the simplest answer or opinion I want my 8525 to last forever. SO I will flash it to the BEST WM6 ROM once and never again will I change it.
SO I am looking for just the BEST GENERAL OVERALL WM6 ROM, I am just gonna be using it as phone and only use the WiFI to connect to the NET, so the ROM I am looking for needs to be STABLE and needs to NOT ruin me or my 8525, I have been reading everyones SIGs to see what ROMs ya'll use, but I just WANT the Opinions of the regulars here
WHAT Windows Mobile 6 ROM should I upgrade to?? I will take ALL suggestions PLEASE help me, I dont wanna kill my 8525 again, I just want to flash it and leave it at that!!
THANK YOU EVERYONE
P.S I'm not a complete n00b if u read the whole thread you'll see I do my homework
the number one advise which everyone has been giving which has been pounded into everyone's mind, which you somehow manage to avoid listening to, is to first install hardspl. Hardspl is a must if you want to upgrade your rom.
as for the best rom recommendation, i will tell you this, there is no such thing as a best rom, everyone will have their own preferences, what works for one may not work for another person. just see any thread on ppl asking for best roms and you will see many many different replies.
just by the fact that you are making this post i will assume you want the easy way out, you rather have ppl do the recommendations for you than read and learn on your own, so i will give you the easy way out solution. Install the official at&t wm6 rom, and just soft reset before the customization starts and there you go, all done. its either that or return you phone and get a firefly. or a symbian phone. but i highly recommend the firefly.

this is my 2nd time around if you Wouldnt MIND checking out the attached jpeg of my 8525 Bookmarks you would see that I do DO MY homework, I have read the wiki over and over, and I already have DONE the HARSPL V7 first .. (from olipro).
Once you've got HardSPL on, it's up to you really. Some are good and some are...flaky, to be polite.
I would start with the official one from your carrier and use that for a day or two so you have a good, hopefully stable, benchmark to measure the competition up against.
Bang all your apps on it and see how it runs then try the same thing on the cooked ones.
Smiffy.
I Phrased my Subject of the Thread and my actual question WRONG, I know that ther is NO best ROM is all about what features u want, be I want the opinions of you guys, the ones that call me a n00b, I value your opinion, I did my homework, I just want to flash my 8525 ONCE to a WM6 ROM that will last me the life of the phone. Heres what I like 1. theme skins 2. stability 3. good wifi 4. and I guess I want no bloatware so it will be a FAST ROM
So basically I just want to know what you guys (the experts) can suggest to me. Just want 1 ROM that will enable me to use my 8525 to the best of its capabilities!!
thank you
nicknowsky
i have used the offical ROM on my last 8525, and thats the one that got me i n troube and killed my 1st 8525
if u read the post above I gave a description of what i am looking for, or you know what I would like to know What The Most Popular WM6 ROM Is?? (no 6.1)

its hard to pick a ROM for you. Generally you can't go wrong with Farias/Dr Puttinghams/schaps to name a few. As for applications, be careful not to overload your phone with .cab's as this will slow it down.
There are a number of ROM's out there which are stripped of applications and built more for speed (though right now I'm having a complete blond moment and can't remeber one of them....doh!!!), and from there you can add to your own personal preferences.
Hey SPARTAN, I noticed u are using WM6.1, but before that what ROM did you use, and better yet what was the ROM that you used the absolute LONGEST??? or what is your personal favorite??
I'm a bit of a ROM freak, as I never keep the same ROM for any real length of time. Think I've used pretty much everything with little tweaks here and there.
Mostly used Schaps, as he tends to provide very stable ROM’s and eagerly awaiting Schaps 6.1 full version, but currently using Faria-R32 / Dr Puttingham WM6.1
Well I am close to going thru with the ROM flash, I just did my weekly REINSTALL of my operating system (been using XP lately) and I just installed the necessary drivers and programs to keep my computer from messing up or having ANY sort of error while the flash process is going on, just the very basics installed, thats really what the cause of death was for my first AT&T 8525(HERMES100) I got sloppy and was then a n00b, did a real n00bish thing and KILLED my 1st 8525. The funny thing with that was I had it for only 48hrs, and I cried for a week after. I still have it, might send it to HTC USA for repair.
But getting back to the todays upgrade, I am still in the process of deciding what ROM I will install, so I gotta ask are there ANY last recommendations on which WM6 ROM I should use?? I just wanna hear any and all last opinions
1st : Shamanix Ultimate v2 Final and 2nd : Kinokin WM6 Final.
I'm valuing ALL opinions
I know, I know this getting annoying and I keep asking dumb questions but I wanna decide, so here is the question
Which is better and/or more stable Schap's WM6 Pro 4.00 or 4.01???
and how good is Schap's WM6 Pro 4.31 cause I am almost leaning towards 4.31, but I like I have said before I want stability and something thats gonna keep my 8525 running longest and strongest
This is gonna be it NO more stupidity coming from ME, I just want last opinions on Schap's WM6 Pro 4.00 - 4.01 and 4.31
and THANK YOU everyone who took the time to help me, I know members like me get annoying, but I do my homework, I just wanted a little help
THANKS
Opinions, eh? I'm opinionated AND drunk...
Here's mine: go with 6.0 instead of 6.1.
People experienced in dealing with little niggles and issues by altering registry entries or installing lots of small cabs get on fine with 6.1, depending on which ROM of course. If you're new to upgrading then the issues that have yet to ironed out of 6.1 in such as a way as to make it a simple 1-click-to-install-and-you're-done job will probably annoy you too much. Smiffy's advice was really good mate: start with a ROM you can rely on, which basically means your own carrier's. If they haven't produced a WM6 yet (mine, OrangeUK, haven't and probably won't as they do lag rather badly in that area) then go for the most basic, cut-down and reportedly stable 6.0.
After you've got used to using your carrier's mobile you'll notice when the phone's faster or not when using different things on a new ROM. Only move up to 6.1 when you're well-used to how your phone fares with 6.0. (I'm assuming you won't install any benchmarking software. Not calling you lazy as I don't either - I just judge the 'feel' of it.)
I heartily recommend using mattk_r's Pandora Naked 6.0 - it's stable as any ROM I've ever used, including official ROMs. Give me a minute, I'l fetch the link.
Here you go.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1731669
I use a ROM based on the kitchen with a lot of my own kit thrown in. But I didn't start out like that; I started out like you, needing a few pointers, doing a lot of reading and occasionally annoying the hell out of myself.
By the way, if you're not using an SDHC card (which I assume you're not from the sounds of things) do me a favour and stick a copy of the original carrier's ROM on your SD card after renaming it HERIMG.nbh. Should you do a ChunkyMonkey Special and temporarily brick your phone (I used to do it all the time mate) it's an easy out in many cases, even if you can't boot past your bootloader.
(But take the SD card out when you flash your ROM. Although that's good practice anyway, so just do it.. )
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=359917&highlight=ultimate
As you can see (if you checked!) Ultimate is based on Schaps 4.31 ROM and more refined.
I'd go for LVSW.
Seriously man, you're asking the impossible. If you've read the forum so throroughly as you've claimed, you'd know that once you start, you'll not stop. Each of the ROMs, whilst good in their own way, has some kind o prolems with it that will make you change it for something else.
For example - Schaps 4.31 - an excellent rom but you have to install a fix for button 5 plus a couple of other gripes. Nothing major but enough to make me eventually keep looking once something different comes along.
You're not going to find the "one" rom.
The only place you'll find the one is in the matrix. Flashing is like the red pill. You're free of restraint but it comes at a cost.
I know I am asking for a "DREAM" I really just wanted opinions of what would be a GOOD, solid WM6 ROM, cause I am gonna flash it ONCE to the ROM I pick and that s IT, not more flashing or trying out new ROMs and this or that.
Put it this way IF you all had to CHOOSE just 1 WM6 ROM to flash and the fate of the world was riding on your choice of ROM, it had to be stable and save humanity, What ROM would that be??
thats the kinda opinions I want to help me make my choice

Confirmation , if possible, please!

OK, so I can't load hardspl v7 into my spv m3100, but I do now know that the bootloader is spl 1.40 olipro.
Is this OK to load WM6, and do I need to watch for CID clashes.
Am I able to use the official HTC wm6 rom, or do I need to use a customised version?
I'd appreciate some guidance, as I don't want to brick my machine!
I am now using activesync 4.5 on a windows pc.
Many thanks,
Robert
Hi,
All I do on my spv m3100 is download the version that i want (schapps, pdaviet etc), connect my spv to the pc and sync it (backing up any crucial data) and then double click the ruu wrapper - the program then asks you if you want to auto detect which version of bootloader you want to use which on mine it is usually hard spl, then the program takes over and hey prsto 5 minutes later I'm loading my programs back onto my newly flashed spv ! I have found that this is the best way for me - the mods will be able to give more info but I took the plunge 20 months ago and must have flashed my device with a new rom about once a week!
Take Care,
Seriously
I'm seriously wondering if they can incorporate a noob rule called the don't open new threads without searching RULE . that would seriously help!

Hey bro, if you have the oli pro spl on your device then loading a origenal rom with spl integrated is not a good idea. Look for the official wm6 rom only without spl, radio or extended. Here is a link to the official rom without radio, spl or extended. http://rapidshare.com/files/63200881/RUU_signed.nbh You will also need the ruuwrapper.exe file to install this rom on your hermes wich you can find in any custom rom here on xda under the hermes thread. Oh dont mind these neigh sayers bashing the noobs, some ppl here are still nice enough to help you and dont think they are the flashing gods.
@joshkoss if you hate the fact he is asking something that has been asked a million times, why bother posting just to moan? Is that not just adding to the spam of the board.
@revrob Why exactly can you not install hard splv7, have you cid unlocked your device first using this unlocker ftp://xda:[email protected]/Hermes/Tools_and_Programs/HTC_Hermes_SIM_CID_Unlock_v3a.zip
If you havent you wont be able to install hardspl or anything else
extract and run the program and then attempt to install hardspl v7. If you are successful then you will be able to install any other rom. Even an official rom with the minimum amount of risk
Without Hardspl installed you can only install your providers rom e.g. Oranges' rom update. With Hardspl installed you can install any hermes rom regardless of what version of hermes it was designed for
Hope that helps
It's sounds like you've used Pof's unlocker, is that why you have HardSPL 1.40?
There should be no reason why you can't update it to HardSPL 2.10. I can't remember if 1.40 has the same features when it doesn't allow itself to be overwritten (and can't be arsed to check as that's your job.
It's as Scousemartin states plus you need to do a little more reading but if you want to minimise bricking your phone use a MicrsoSD card, you should be fine doing it that way and 1.40 but try to install 2.10.

Point accepted!! Sorry, it just peeves me off.. Guess i need to find some other way to vent my frustrations then adding to the frustrations of others..
I'm sorry JoshKoss but I have to agree with Scousemartin, while I may be a newbie here I do spend alot of time on other forums and happen to be a moderator on some. I must say it does erk me a little when I see negative posts like that. We were all newbies with silly questions at some point and IMHO I think the only silly question is the one that people don't ask.
At the very least you could be more positive in your approach by suggesting use of the search feature and suggesting a couple of search links. Often a search feature wont find the answer your after if you don't know exactly what to look for in the first place. Also I think alot of people when it comes to flashing are affraid of bricking their device and a little bit of positive help is all they need or just a little push in the right direction.
I must say though in some cases I agree that sometimes the questions may be a little too simple and there is a billion threads already present on the topic so it may get frustrating. If you really feel it's been said too much and posted to death may I suggest two things.
1. Simply just point them to a current thread on the topic and say Howdy or Welcome while your at it. Make folks welcome you never know what they too might have to sahre later on down the track. Give them too many negitives straight off and they will prolly just leave this forum. This is currently a fantastic forum but it is only so because of the members in it !
2. The old saying "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything". If you feel it's a pointless thread why vailidate it with a comment even, just move on and give it no more thought.
I hope I haven't upset you or anyone else for that matter with my opinion as it's only mine. But I feel the world in general spends too much time on negative, I try to always look for a way to make any input I give to be positive. What goes round, comes round, be nice, stay happy and always remember it's more fun to make love than it is to make war.
geez what a load of dribble from a newbie ROLF..
Apologies for the angst I caused some people last night.
I know how it feels, as I post on other forums in totally unrelated areas - and sometimes newbie questions can frustrate .......
However, I did manage to flash Schaps 4.31 WM6 onto my spv m3100, and all seems to be OK - much better than WM5
I still haven't got HardSPL 7 onto the machine yet, but I will try again. I had followed MrVanx's guide to the letter, but some people report success if they tick a box which he doesn't mention - so I'll try that later on today.
Many thanks,
Robert
You can flash hard spl via the sd card method. Its posted on the "hard SPL or how not to brick your Hermes" thread. Page 116. All links to softwares needed as well as instructions there.
Cheers...
You can also use SSPL which also allows you to flash anything. You just execute from SD card.
NP Revrob, no angst here with anyone. I was replying to what was said but not really at the person who made the comment but more just in general really. It can be frustrating for both senior members and newbies alike. I just like to always get folks working/talking with a positive aspect to things as there is more than enough things to bring us down in this day and age.
"it's all good"

Many thanks,
Robert

It aint you that caused it man, I'm the harborer of frustrations don't worry about it, you asked a valid question and I'm the one that rained on the parade!! Take it easy and good luck
And on your question, I've had good luck with flashing from SD card, Check the wiki in my first link for flashing from your SD card and give it a go!
Joshkoss,
hey no biggie and certainly no need for sorries either, like I said it wasn't really intended to be directed at you personally just was rasing a point of my own opinion. On the other hand I'm sorry to hear things haven't been good for you. I do hope that whatever is giving or gave you a rough time is either sorted out or start to improve for you as quick as possible. Cheer up and don't let things bring you down my friend, life is to be lived and enjoyed. lol I must sound so weird but hey I like to wish everyone well. SMILE
Don't ask me how or why, but I downloaded HardSPL v7 from a different mirror to the one I had been using previously (and I'm sorry I can't remember which one - I've been doing much downloading of files yesterday and today!), and flashed it on Windows XP, and it worked!!! - so that is now safely installed as well.
Now to upgrade the Radio ROM .......
Revrob, be careful when doing this, would REALLY suggest using the sd card method as there is less chance of little "accidents". The radio rom is the part of the Hermes MOST LIKELY TO BRICK IT... Any interruptions can corrupt the memory area making it impossible to reflash. You WILL have a PERMANENT BRICK (OS will work but no Phone functionality so technically a brick). In this case, less flashing=longer life..
Just a word of caution.
Also, the radio rom doesn't need to be upgraded to the latest to be best. It seems to be the carrier that determines what is the best for them and you could find that you loose reception, have MAJOR battery drain or both...
Try to find out what radio your carrier is using and stick with it...
Cheers....

Excellent advice... which is why I strongly recommend always using a MicroSD card. I have seen too many people brick there phones and not have HardSPL on either. With the MicroSD card it's virtually impossible to cause a "break" in the upgrade procedure, whereas using USB/Activesynce it is all too easy to cause or have one.
Even if you do have HardSPL it is a much faster process than using the USB cable and saves you the hassle of finding out how to unbrick your phone with HardSPL installed on it.
When it happens bricking your phone is the worst feeling in the world, but thankfully it's becoming less and less common!

Which rom for 8525 would best suite my needs...(oh no, not another one of these!)

Before everybody gets all peeved at me for this, I've done my research, and I've done my homework and PLENTY of searches. Here's the deal.
I recently purchased a Tilt (and am waiting for the damn AT&T WM 6.1 upgrade), and I gave my brother my old 8525. His needs are pretty basic...AIM, txts, email, internet, and GPS (I gave him my external and set him up w/ TT7). He's more of a intermediate user than a beginner, but I would like to keep it very simple for him. What would be the best rom for his 8525 (preferably WM 6.1) that would be the easiest to use, and of course the fastest. He doesn't need any extra bloatware or anything. I'm a pretty advanced user myself, so I can help him out as much as possible.
Also, any recommendations for me? I'm sick of waiting for AT&T's 6.1 upgrade. I was thinking about flashing the Tytn II rom on there but IDK.
Thanks, and try not to flame too bad.
Don't wait for the upgrade; it'll be crappy anyways. Flash to one of the custom ROMs here and you cetrainly wont regret it.

That's what I was thinking. Which 6.1 ROM would you suggest for my Tilt? I want speed and power/performance. I can install all the custom apps myself (I would prefer too). I'm still running AT&T's bloat'ed 6.0 ROM
As far as the 8525, which 6.1 ROM would you suggest for him? Speed and performance. Again, I can install all the custom apps myself.
try a lite rom dvh, crc, and/or pdacorner wm6.1 for hermes.
check the tilt forum section for their cooked wm6.1's...
happy flashing!
well
let me know how you get on, the tilt will be my next phone, kaiser with video calling that is, as i believe it is still reasonably new release, with known issues hopefully the doctors here have already ironed out.
However as people here been saying, let the fun begin by flashing, make sure you read the wiki thoroughly before you do so.

I would try CRC's 12.9 Naked Bigstorage for him, making sure to flash a shipped from first (don't want any nasty HR's).
I find my WM gets faster the longer I let it sit on the phone, and dam is my phone fast now
And for Tilt, Im not sure, best to read up, some have better performance than others, with the Direct 3D drivers ect.
