Hi,
I would like to get some peoples thoughts/feedback on the different WM6 ROMs available.
I have a Dopod 838 Pro and am probably going to flash it purely to see if any extra functionality can be gained out of it & seeing as i have Windows Vista on my Laptop, it seems logical to have WM6 on my XDA
XDA Live & LVSW seem to be looking the most populat of the current flavors around?
Any comments?
I'm actually just flashing the device now with LVSW but was reading some of the posts about XDA Live & it seems tempting...
I guess i may aswell mention i'm also testing out Telstra NextG at work, so anything which will make the radio more responsive & reliable is going to go down well in my books.
If mine goes good, then i might have to do the same for one of the managers at work who has the i-mate jasjam but with the current Telstra ROM on there it is performing like a snail in a sand pit.
All comments appreciated, seeing as i'm the guinea pig at work for most of this stuff.
Thanks.
I tried first LVSW, and run into installation trouble. I got the infamous white screen, and after I made it work, it was really slow. Maybe all my mistake, don't know. I tried than XDA Live 2, and that installed like a charm, and works like a charm, very fast. I am using it since 3 days now, and did not have a single time to soft re-set - and that was necessary with WM5 at least 3 twice a day.
Hi there,
I have notice many users with i-Mate JasJam have upgraded to WM6 Black Edition V1.2.
Anyone have any comments or comparison to the other two?
I am currently own a JasJam with WM5 - this thing runs like a dog and having to soft re-set almost everyday - I am currently considering upgrade to WM6 but really not sure which one to go for.
Any advice would be really appreciated - thanks.

You may have to do that reg hack to enable nextg.. that was the first thing I noticed after flashing a non standard rom.. less band options.. being on plain ole gsm, it didn't bother me.. but that's the only place I've seen mention of it.
I flashed my Dopod 838Pro with Black 1.2 and couldn't be happier. It's really quick, as stable as I noticed WM5 to be, and (being an Aussie) I prefer to have a rom which was cooked here and has carrier settings for here. This was my first experience with flashing a ROM but I only intend to flash again with a later version of the Black ROM. I'd highly recommend it.
I began with the WM6 vanilla and then went to an earlier LSVW ROM. The earlier LSVW took 25 min to flash. I hear newer version takes 40 min to flash. Some have paniced and unpluged their phones temporarily bricking them.
I went back to the vanilla ROM. It takes a little tweaking to get it right but takes only a few minutes to flash. It's also stable. One does have to move the windows office icons around to use MS office.
Remember to SIM and CID unlock your hermes before flashing. Also, you'll have to use the keyboard fix cab for certain hermes versions.

nope...I installed the OS only version and it took about only 6 minutes to install.
you need an 'OS only' rom if you have already flashed the radio to the latest version.
WM6 Black 1.2 is the best IMHO. I used XDA Live for several weeks, but find Black more quicker and more stable, less soft resets etc.
My preference is with the latest LSVW. It has less baggage than WMBE but if you need the functionality of the extra software provided with WMBE then you should chose that.
I think there is not much difference in terms of stability between the two although there has been issues with white screen (more apparent with the LSVW apparently) tho I haven't been cursed with that yet. Most of the instability/compatibility issues lie within the software installed after flashing the OS.
If I'm correct, LSVW has not had the OS version number editted to allow BBC/GOODLINK to work on it but WMBE has. This is not an issue for me since I have no use for these programs.
There is also some more recent additions to the variety of WM6 roms tho they are based on the LSVW version.
I'm looking forwards to Jasjammings WMBE 2.0 which he claims to be based on a final version of WM6. This should be very promising and despite the various added features which I won't need I'll definately be installing.
I was using Vanilla at first, sometimes my TyTN hung up but not too often. Then XDA Live v.10, without any problems. Then I've tried Black Edition v.1.2 but it had issues with SPB Software, sop that was no good for me at all.. Now I'm trying LVSW 2007-03-26, so far so good.. but probably i will flash again to XDA Live v.30 when it's avalaible
I am upgrading to WM6 as soon as my 8525 comes in. I would like to avoid carrying a blackberry that my company is willing to get me. Which ROM supports BBConnect well. Does Black 2.5 because I know jj is having issues with the 3.x versions now. If not then does LVSW? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

There is at least one working on creating the LVSW 5/7 with a BB Connect working, I read it some thread they were trying to edit the Hex to get it working. I may do it since I would like it working too, but it is not top on my list...so keep waiting.
As far as the RIGHT NOW option, I still think XDALive v2 is the best option for BB Connect. But I only use XDALive and LVSW ROMs since they work better than ALL others. Unfourtunalty XDALive future is dead for the time being so LVSW ROMs are the only choice. Maybe there are others changing LVSW 5/7 for BB Connect..............
The Black Roms support BBConnect. I am running BBConnect 4 on Black 3.0.1 and it works like a charm.
I suspect that JJ will ensure it works with Black 3.5 as well.

Thats fine but Black ROM's are not always the most stable for everyone. Black ROM's look cool though, so try it and if you get good preformance then you have a winner.
I used kuphyr's 0.2 and 0.3 with BBC just fine.
As I simply can't afford to have mine 8525 being down for more that couple of hours and on the first attempt to re-cook, I had a made a boo-boo and had spent way too much time re-flashing and re-installing everything few times, I am kinda cautious playing with it and simply use Black 2.0 since then.
I like JJs 2.0 ( except IE being dead slow and of course BT disconnect issues ), overall BBC is doing the excellent job for me and I will be very cautious before I'll switch to any other ROMs.
So yes - Live 0.3 and Black2 are just fine for BBC.
I used Black 2.0 and BBC 4.0 work fine, only have a problems with the BT in my car.
I prove many roms and the black 2.0 for my in this moment is the better for BBC 4.0.

Iulian has it in the Core kitchen. I tried it and it seemed to work, but I don't have BB service to test it out.
I'm running the modified for bbconnect/goodlink BlackMajik with bbconnect 4.0.0.67. It's been working fine for the past 2 weeks or so.

I too am running this and it seems to work pretty well. Does anyone know how or what it is going to take to get bbconnect running on the latest builds. I know something to do with hex editing or some such black magic! I'd really like to see someone make an idiot proof bb connect of vp3g's upcoming 3.0 release...
Me too.....

Works fine on my 8525. I synch email, appointments, and contacts. I'm not sure if it's the latest Black ROM's, the newer radios, or increased BB synchronization (at 3G), but my battery is barely lasting the day.
There are details on the universal forums about hacking the Hex values in order to get the version numbers to change.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=294218
I have just loaded the official Dopod release 5.2.1437 (17944.0.3.1) but finding an changing the version numbers is at the edge of my understanding. I'm willing to give it a go but I am not keen to brick my jasjam.
Anyone want to provide some pointers?

all of the above :-( 8 - 10 hours max. disable 3G - start - settings - phone -gsm. will last for 24+ hours. BB have to stay connected 24x7. breaks all other connections unless u suspend bbc.
I can confirm that running BBC4.0 w WM5 and UMTS I only get about 36hrs from the battery. Less if I use the phone for calls alot.
But I would still appreciate anyone that could take the CustomRUU ROM and hack the version number back.
So would all the BBC users I suspect!

Ayup. Don't care about the battery life. Somewhere in those 36 hours I sleep and plug the phone in....
Elf's Latest ROM also has a Blackberry Connect version I have been using for the past few weeks with hardly any issues. Of course there is the need to suspend services to do more network related media things, as mentioned above, but I have been prompted to suspend Bb Services while using it and when done the service eventually restarts.
I've also found that using the Blackberry Browser works better than IE. It's one of the benefits of Bb Connect 4
Can you provide a link to 'Elf's latest ROM'. Sorry to sound n00bish but I am seeing ROMs posted under the various names but ppl refer to them via a wide and varied assortment of pseudonyms.

what about the good news you mentioned ? was that a temp black out / wrong device ? So should I hex the new Dopod/ATT to 5.2.1238 Build 17745.0.2.3 ? TIA
OK guys, here's my ten bobs worth.
Have tried BBC 4 on all of the recent black ROMS (that have the Hex edit hack) and whilst it works well, I also see the battery drain issue. Also noticed that as soon as I installed BBC4, the performance was s-l-o-w-e-r until I ran something (e.g. settings and then tabbed personal-systems-connection, etc.). Put another way, the Hermes lost it's responsiveness and only seemed to pick it up a little through use.
Just recently stuck BBC4 and then reverted back to 2 on vp3G's WM6 v3.0 ROM (BBC hacked) and the difference is massive. the responsiveness is back and I don't have the pain in the ar$e security settings. Maybe someone much more technical can shed some light on this - all I know is V4 is ****e and V2 flies
I am considering going to one of the WM 6.1 ROMs. To those of you who have installed one (or more) which one do you like and why? Thanks for any advice.

I have tested all the 6.1 ROM's that are currently available for the Excalibur. I believe all parties involved in bringing us this new innovative 6.1 ROM technology have done a superb job. As it stand of this writing, I will have to say that Rick's 6.1 v5 ROM is KING DOG OF ALL 6.1 ROM's for the Excalibur. Personally, I have been able to do a lot of creative things with his ROM that I could not do with other 6.1 ROM's. One of the main thing that I love about Rick's 6.1 v5 ROM, it has no battery drain or memory loss that I have experience thus far. Another thing, I like the speed and the ability of his ROM to carry and run a ton of multi media apps with machine like precision with no lag.......!
I'm running 080314, but I plan to upgrade to 080318 final soon. I do have a few issues with 14 that I am expecting 18 to fix.
EDIT:

Direct your attention to the bold text: What kind of a statement is this? You ABSOLUTELY can do any and all of the customizations that are currently out there with any 6.1 ROM released. There is nothing outrageous or particularly special about Rick's v5 other than a ROM built with added customizations. Rick just provided a ROM with these customizations so that users would not have to install them and tweak registry settings themselves; in other words, he did the work for you so you could just flash the ROM and be done. However, not everyone wants or uses these tweaks and customizations.
That being said, I would suggest to goraps to look at Kavana's 080318 final, and then compare it to any of Rick's 6.1 releases to determine which he wishes to use. But I would like to stress the importance of starting from "scratch" (Kavana's 18 final) before jumping into something more developed and "tweaked out".
Kavana's 080318 final
Only prob is I don't like the thin font. I would prefer the standard Tahoma.
Rick Rom rules
I use Rick's 6.1 v5 ROM and (don't know how if Rick didnt change nothing important) i have much more free memory all the time maby that is a reazon im finding Rick's Rom much faster. There is one little problem i;m looseing network outside city (moveing to countryside) i was trying few diferent roms and still have same problem Even my wifes SE k510 is better but it has to be problem with phone however i dont think its broken just chinese (no offece) I;m considering buying one of Nokia (n95) or Motorolla V9 but i will miss all Excalibur funcionalitys
Sry 4 my english... hope its unerstendable
O.. and special thx to Kevana U did great job with 6.1
Well I upgraded last night and I used Rick's after I was unable to get Kavana's to work on my phone. I kept getting the 270 error so I went with Ricks and it worked like a charm. So far I really like it. I will see what happens after I have had a chance to play around for a while.
I use latest Kavana's ROM - 080330
And works fine. I see some new Radio - need a couple of days to see is there any differences.
I just don't like colorful icons on top in Ricky-s version

I find this one incredibly stable, just as long as you don't stupidly add the x-button program on top of what's already there. It'll create a conflict in the software and force a reset.
I don't text, so I'd advise reading through to gauge what other people think.

CRCs ROM
I too have tried every ROM on this board I could find. The one liked the best was CRC's r9.2. It seemed to load the fastest, from the get go. I noticed right away in the screen alignment. Here is the link.

For texting the WM6.1 is a must, with threaded TXT, it's amazing. Like you I am running the AT&T 8525. I had problems with my internet connection, then I updated my radio, here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/73390245/HERM_Radio_Only_1.54.30.10_CustomRUU.zip.html
After that, no problems.
I liked this one the best because it had everything I wanted, Task Manager, Office Mobile, Flashlite, and the auto-network config worked better than others I tried.
It will be this ROM for me, or the Offical ROM from AT&T. I CANNOT wait for his 10.4 release.
Agree CRC's are the go

I agree with this. IMHO CRC's Stable roms have all the features that are required. I have played with many but always come back to his stable versions when I want to use my hermes for work.
Stable and fast
Hi
I have tried most of the roms released here, and just 2 months ago came across DVH roms. This Vietnamese guy is really finding speed and reliability in my Hermes. It is the only roms that didn't mess up no matter what I install. All the others fail sooner or later or they are too slow compared to the roms of this guy

If you are on your 6th one in a month then how do you know they are stable? You dont seem to use them long enough to find out.
Most of the 6.1 roms out there are stable, however you need to follow the rules and flash a carrier rom before flashing. - some require a good radio rom etc.
i saw you posted in binkys 3.9 thread.. well im using that rom and have been using it pre-release and its fine.. no problems what so ever.. so theres something wrong with the way your running your roms.
So far I found Pay's last one to work the best for me. I have kept it longer then any ROM including the stock one so far. I will probably try one of the 6.1 roms again now that they are getting figured out more, but that will be after I come back from Greece.
All I do is text, MMS, make phone calls, and check the weather or check my email from time to time and the best IMHO is the MRH ROMs followed closely by the Binkey11's ROM. The MRH one is my favorite because it has most the features and apps but Binky's is really good for being light and fast. I am bouncing back and forth between them and I like them the most right now.
I am also a HUGE fan of Schaps ROMs so be sure to look for that one here in the next little bit. I would venture to guess it will probably be the benchmark all other WM6.1 ROMs are measured by.

If u flash often, then u know u'r device's feel, behavior, apps, etc. So, it doesn't take that long to evaluate if u'r own device is stable, buggy, quick, slow, etc.
I find most of these cooks roms (from hard work & revised versions) very stable...
This is how to go about?

i believe it has something to do with the storage, and the carrier rom returns the device to the original settings.
CRC's ROM's are the best in my opinion & I think I've tried most of the others.
Been running CRC 10.4 since release with no issues.
I find it's only add-ons or bad CABs that may make them unstable.
Schap's WM6 4.31 WWE Lite
Schap's WM6 4.31 WWE Lite or Berd's 4.31 SS (=Schap's WM6 4.31 WWE Lite with 3.62 SuperStorage).
Have been running this ROM for months now, zero issues and very very fast.
