Is this stable/reliable enough for everyday phone use? - P3300, MDA Compact III General

Hi,
First a brief summary of my experience with Windows Mobile. I have owned i-Mate Jam, i-Mate K-Jam, Orange C600 and Treo 750v. Jam and K-Jam weren't very reliable as sometimes I couldn't call or the phone just wouldn't ring. However, Treo 750v is the best phone I have ever used and the only reason I switched to Nokia E61 was I couldn't justify keeping an expensive smartphone especially as I didn't use it to its capacity.
I have had Nokia E61 for over a year (longest time I have kept the same phone) and I am sick of it. Therefore, I am considering Windows Mobile phones.
I would have went for HTC Touch Cruise but the driver fiasco has turned me off. So the other options are Samsung Blackjack II (i617) or HTC Artemis variant.
Are HTC Artemis variants reliable enough for everyday phone use? Has anyone used Samsung Blackjack II as well as HTC Artemis if so, how do they compare as phones?
Thanks for help!

i have used my Artemis (T-Mobile MDA Compact III) for the last year and a half, and have never had problems. The only time it has died on me was when i had a lot of software installed, and it overclocked to cope... so yeh, not surprising. Now run it with just a few pieces (Resco Explorer, BatteryStatus, TomTom, 4 XFlib Games, S2V and Total Comander), and not overclock, and never had a problem since!

Thanks for help.
In the end I purchased Treo 750 as its something I have used in the past and feel comfortable with.

Well well I ended up selling Treo 750 and bought MDA Compact III. So far very pleased

Retaining the BlueAngel or Not

I have a strange question.I have had the BA for about a year and a half. I am very much satisfied with the device. But now I want to change the device. I searched the net, but nothing seemed much impressive than the BA. ( may be because I like big screen). And I definitely need a quadband model,Please help me decide on this subject.
Well I have had a few problems with my BA and I have decided to get a Jasjam (Tytn) I think it is the best phone on the market. I have searched through all the WM5 devices and Symbian devices and out of them all the Jasjam is the best.
memory
I have upgraded from the MDAII to the MDA Vario II and I am really pleased. Although the screen is smaller it is easier to hold and therefore much more usable. The only thing bugging me is that it does have a smaller internal memory than the BA. You have been warned.

Excalibur vs. Prophet

Hi Guys,
I know it's not an exact comparison, but I was wondering if anyone has any opinion on whether or not Windows Mobile is any "faster" on Excalibur (because it's the smartphone edition), or if it's exactly the same?
Both devices run the same CPU and memory so I'm curious if WM6 smartphone edition is a little better optimized or not.
Just so you know, I currently own an HTC Prophet and am on the brink of ordering an excalibure as a replacement. I don't want to do it if the performance is pretty much the same.
Thanks,
I'm not sure what the performance is like for the two devices, but why don't you go for the S630 cavalier instead of the S620 excalibur?
The cavalier isn't available from my cell provider. =( unfortunately, Canadian cell companies suck like that.
And that's stopping you from getting one.... why ?
Rofl.. we're not all made out of cash... I'd rather get a subsidized phone from my Cell Provider than fork out a huge amount of cash for a phone. =)
Plus I already paid in full for my HTC prophet.. not going to make that mistake again...

I do not know but from my experience there is less stuff loaded in the smartphone edition. WM Smarphone editions (well I have only used the dash smartphone actually) seem fast as hell to me with wm6 and is even better with 6.1. It depends on what you need as the smarphone editions don't have as much software as the regular versions. Of course there is that no touchscreen thing.
Size is what sold me. The dash is so friggin tiny. I work in IS at a hospital and have tried every ATT phone there is (Friend works with the cell phones and lets me play with the new ones). I really like the Tmobile dash out of all of them (plus tmo is cheaper and they aren't assholes). It has everything you want except for GPS and 3g. Has a decent camera 1mp nice in outdoors stationary (only thing I really want upgraded on the dash). Battery on normal use gets like 3-4 days (browsing web on opera mini 1/2hr day [pages take 1~2 seconds to load under edge], 10 minutes talk). If you don't use it at all on standby using newest radio update and whatnot it lasts ~5 days (make sure data is off when not using it). Playing back music with backlight off (GSplayer) ~5 hours (no normal headjack pisses me off, can get
adapter,included headphones are suprisingly good.)
The updates that you can get for this phone are amazing. This thing has gone from wm5 to 6.1 and looks great. I have had mine for a year and is still in perfect shape. Never had any problems with my dash.
I think it all comes down to what your using the device for. With the new 6.1 roms both devices will be snappier than before with better stability, and battery life. I recently dug out my Excalibur due to an itch to flash Rickwyatt's redone Kavana rom and I am VERY impressed. It's not only much more responsive but the interface looks great! good job Rick!
Comparing the Excalibur to my Herald which runs @ the same cpu speed, honestly feels about the same, but keep in mind the user experience on these devices although both powered by WinMo, is completely different. The Excalibur for example is much MUCH easier to use in the car for example, especially one handed. Capability wise the touch screen devices win hands down! Good luck!

Anyone tried the MDA Compact lV?

I've just found about this phone (HTC Diamond) and T-Mobile are doing it. Phone seems like a dream, with everything the MDA C3 has but lots more, like wifi, 4gb internal storage, very slim, 3G. Anyone tried it? My upgrade is in november.
Tried it, it's great
My wife got one on T-Mobile, and i've checked it out, as I will be getting one on O2 in November too. I think it's one od the best HTC phones created.
Quick, slick, full of features.
My neighbour has the O2 version, and it's pretty much the same.
Hope that helps, any questions, ask, and i'll try and get back to you as soon as I can.
I've got one! I love it
Go for the Touch Pro. The Touch Diamond has no microSD slot. Also with the pro you get the addition of a flash (well, light) on the camera and of course the sliding keyboard
Also, shouldn't this thread be in the Diamond forum?
I had one for 5 days!
I sent it back due to the very disappointing battery life - 2 hours talk time was awful!
Thanks for the replies. Not long now and I can find out how much it'll cost me to upgrade. I posted it in this forum because I'm specifically asking artemis owners how it compares in their experience to the MDA Compact 3. But I've asked other things in the Diamond forum.
As far as the Touch Pro microSD slot, well, I'll be happy with the Diamond as
4gb storage is enough for me. Tbh, I still haven't used up all of my 2GB card in my MDA C3. And cameras on phones are still not that good really, even with a flash, so I tend to use my dedicated camera if I want really good quality pics.
Of the people here who've tried the Diamond, did any of you try TomTom sat nav on it? It takes me 2 minutes or so to get a connection on the MDA C3, is it any faster on the Diamond? And is it true that the stylus falls out of it's slot quite easily, a bit loose? Thanks.

potential buyer: is the excalibur laggy? response times?

Hi Guys,
Long question, Cliffnotes below:
I've been thinking about buying a used excalibur (s621) as my main phone recently and I wanted to check in with you guys to address some fears I have over this phone.
Some background: I've used WM phones for many years now. My first windows mobile phone was when I went from plain old ipaq pocketpcs to the HTC Typhoon (audiovox smt5600). I was actually pretty happy with it except that it was slow and unresponsive at times and the OS would crash every few days. =( becuase I didn't have a dataplan, i never really used any over the air functions of the phone.
After getting fed up with the response times of the typhoon, I picked up an HTC prophet (dopod 818pro) after yearning to get a touch screen again. Unfortunately, I underestimated the processor of the prophet and I was eventually lead to frustration with the slow responsiveness of the prophet. I've since moved on to a blackberry (provided by work) with a data plan but I still wish I had a WM phone after discovering how limited the blackberry OS is in comparison to WM.
So in my search, my only cost-viable option at this point is either a s621 or the samsung BJ II. But I ruled out the BJII because it didn't have Wifi (though the faster CPU and GPS would've been nice).
I'm a veteran at flashing roms so i will no doubt be loading kavana's WM 6.1 rom if I get the s621 but I'm still truely afraid about having to deal with a laggy phone. Is the s621 like that? I know it has the same CPU as my HTC prophet and WM 6.1 professional was pretty laggy when I really needed it, so is Wm 6.1 standard any better? For those that have used both devices or similar devices, how does the s621 stack up? is it just as laggy (esp. when it was a device originally designed for WM5)?
How is the keyboard response times? Does it get laggy as well?
CN: Is WM6.1 laggy or responsive on the excalibur? How does it compare to other WM 6.1 Professional devices? How about Keyboard lag?
Thanks a ton for reading all the way down here.. =)
I've only had experience with the Dash, and I hated it until the 6.1 roms became available. I've used the stock rom, an HTC rom, Kavana's last rom, Ricky's v24 vanilla rom, and now the Rose rom. Ricky's rom was great, occasionally it would hang and require a battery pull, and the Rose rom works pretty well too. There are occasions of lag, but if you manage your memory, it runs pretty well. Sometimes there is internet lag, but usually it is a particular website or server causing the lag. If you buy, I would strongly suggest you upgrade the battery as well; get the 1550ma from Amazon.
Basically, I would recommend it as a cost effective phone.
The fact that you can get a used Dash or Excalibur for a little over 100 bucks right now, doesn't justify the effort of researching it so much. Buy it, use it.... throw it away or sell it on craigslist if you don't like it. 100 bucks is not that much money...
I personally like the Dash with the Rose rom, as it tends to do everything for me but that is my own opinion. I would actually check out the phone and try it for 100 dollars because that is not to much to spend on a phone.
You guys are ballers thinking $100 is not a lot for a phone... =) personally, I'd rather not spend $100 bucks and save up and get the iphone (yeah yeah, save the speech =))... but that's just me.
Sounds like there's really nothing different in terms of stability or lagginess of this phone compared to all the other WM phones (I guess I really shouldn't be surprised)... I was really hoping the WM6.1 standard was very responsive on the 200 Mhz omap CPU... especially reading how the 250 mhz cpu on the BJ II really flies...
But you're right that it's not a lot of money for the features you get. I will be bugging you guys more once I start flashing! =)
What other annoyances should I be looking out for when getting the phone?
I bought S621 and the same day I recieved it flashed with WM6.1 For Excalibur By Kavana 080408 - Remade By Rickywatt, of course that wm5 times are gone.
And from a month using it I found that it´s a very reliable, stable, light smartphone with 6.1!!, so my personal opinion is that for it´s price and time on the market is a good choice.
PD: I´ve got for free 2 iphoneys form my work cell plan and the same day I recieve them, i sold them, no more words about it...
Good day to all,
Well 100 bucks right now in our economy is alot of money, but i would not hesitate to buy the dash if i were you. It doesn't lag at all in my opinion. Best phone i've had yet out of about 50. I have the g1 and I'm still on my dash most of the time.
Same here agree with everyone, the Dash is an amazing smartphone, i use Rose ROM v1.6 remade by Ricky and I, the responsiveness is spott on, the customization is amazing always something to do, for 100 bucks as peeps putting it, it's a steal of a phone.
save up! this phone is like 100 years old. so yes, next to a g1 or anything new...its laggy, its outdated and lacks features that are hardware restricted. so as far as your 100$ goes...yes its a very minimal amount next to an iphone/g1/touchpro... so in short, this phone [email protected]! but like, a year or two ago.
Compared to new smartphones its laggy and old. but for 100 usd its very good choice. Personally i'm very satisfied, after flashing to ROSE ROM it's still really good device. i have mine for 3 days and i'm still really excited, because it has all i ever wanted - wifi and qwerty . of course - camera is really poor (i have switched from SE K800 which has 3mpx camera, so it's really markable difference)
Well I would not recommend the iphone either, if anything the G1 would be the best option; however, I have the G1 and I do not like it as much as I hardly ever use it and I still use my dash.
dash/excalibur
I've had mine for 5 months and I love it more now than before, upgraded to rickwatt's v24 when I first got it , and got hooked since. After getting a 4gb micro sdhc, stuffed it with, nrgz mini weather , showaco's pocket sportcenter, pocket player 3.7 , tcpmp, google maps, pocketnester plus, and a bunch of games , file changer for tweaking cprs, dll, and learned how to edit my own xml files, I've got a pretty enhanced phone. The only thing I hated was the P.IE but I got that taken care of with opera mini 4.2 web browser. I will probably keep this phone till my 22 month upgrade comes and if we're lucky, Dash2 will be around by then. BTW thanks to all the people that's helped me with my phone. The main reason for the phone to be laggy is having too many things running at the same time, every time I'm done using something I close it , free memory , etc, task manager and cele task are my friends.

Uprading from the TYTN II

I have had the TYTN II for the past year and a half and now I can upgrade my phone. I have narrowed the choice down to the Touch Pro 2 as it seems like the next logical step and the Hero with Android, but I was put off by the fact that there is still no screen drivers for this for the QUALCOMM chip ( the same as it was with the TYTN II ).
I am used to having a brick of a phone so the size is not that big an issue. Is the screen an issue like it was on the TYTN II, as some games required you to touch the screen to control, the TYTN II at least had the pad for control, but this isn't present on the Touch Pro II so the screen is the only input method ( other than the keyboard ).
I primarily use the phone as a phone, MP3 player and to play Divx via core player I also play the odd game as I have a long train trip in the mornings and evenings. I ruled the Hero out at this point as I cant seem to find a decent Divx player like Core Player on the Windows mobile.
The other question I wanted to know is, what is the screen like when viewing in the daylight. The TYTN II gets washed out and I end up cupping my hands over the screen to unlock it ( the screen really dims when locked ) Is it viewable without having to set the brightness up to full... I have a Blackberry 8820 and than can be used in the daylight no problem.
Does anyone know how the battery life also compares to the TYTN II with roughly the same usage ?
Thanks in advance.
Hi there mate,
Previous to my Rhodium (TP2) I had a TyTn II.
Currently im loving my TP2, the brightness isnt an issue as it has a light sensor so adjusts accordingly and does a good job of it.
The screen is awesome, IMO much better than the one on TyTn II.
I have tried two 3d games on my Touch Pro 2, however i do have Neo beat direct3d (??? correct me if im wrong) drivers installed, and both games seem to run flawlessly.
Battery life is my only issue, it seems my TyTn II was better, however, admittedly, I have yet to fully charge it since I bought it on Saturday, its only had random charges.
Overall, im very impressed with the device and to me its definatly superior to the TyTn II and worth the upgrade
That's too bad to hear about the battery. I'm upgrading from the TyTn II as well (how many of us are there..?) and it's in the mail so I haven't gotten a chance to check out all of it yet (hard to tell with a store model)
Like many, I've also upgraded from the TYTNII to the TP2. Awesome device and much better than the TYTNII in every way possible.
(also very proud to say to I've converted 2 iCrap admirers to TP2s...)
yes, it's the logical step and yes i was tytn ii user (and two others beforehand)
and i can testify that tp2 plays video better than diamond and sex1, same spec'd they are, even when the differences are small. it's even better than tytnII, amazing if we think that it has more than quadruple tytnII pixels.
and yes my tytnII could achieved better battery life, better sigtnal reception, better gps, but that's only after dozens of testing radio roms and also os roms, after more than 1 year. you must know, of curz...
more amazing is, all my tp2 current performance is still based on my original WWE OEM rom. imagine result when using cooked ones
hope i help you stopped hesitating, mate
I too used a TyTN II before with several custom roms, and I must say I'm impressed by the TP2 on stock. In fact, the only reason I'm currently looking at getting Hard SPL fixed is because I've a Dutch OS and I prefer English.
If I were you, I'd base the decision to buy a TP2 over other models on the need for a hardware keyboard. The features/stability/smoothness of the stock rom does not have to be a reason to avoid it imo.
i don't wanna open another thred so i'll post here... it is still related to upgrading to tp2
i have had the tytn... i jumped to nokia for only one reason... it drived me crazy the latency of the phone app... and of course the blacklist apps that were worthless considering that the busy tone entered at least 1 sec after the actual ring... one other issue was the connection with my parrot car kit... ck3100... it worked but not 100%...
now i ihave seen the touch pro 2... first i had my eyes on the n97... but after holding it in my hands for a few minutes i got disspointed... the touch pro 2 i just like it... althogh i have never seent it live..
my issues are
1. how it is from the responsivnes point of view... compared with the tytn and also with symbian phones
2. should i buy tp2 now or just wait a little more considering that this was launch quite a while ago and it could apear not far in the future another one better?
3. i haven't found a video with the autorotate function in action... is it working?... i mean based on the g sensor not the keyboard sliding...

Man, that is disappointing. I never used the GPS on my Tilt, but either way T-Mobile's service will kick the **** out of AT&Ts in my area. I don't get service ANYWHERE right now. I charge my phone every night, anyway, though..
Thanks for the replies. For all its quirks I think the TyTn II is one of the best phones I have ever had, and I have gone through some phones, the first windows mobile I had was an SPV E100 with the clip on camera ( I am a hoarder so its still in my loft !! ). Because of the keyboard and the tilt screen I ( like others ) see the TP2 as a logical step to go to....
The thing is the lack of a touchpad kinda niggles me, but looking around, it looks like its being dropped from a lot of touch phones now, there wouldn't be much of an issue it was multi touch, but in this case it isn't. The dropping of the touch pad looks more to me like making the phone look like the iPhone rather than an improvement.
That said I am swaying more and more to the Touch Pro II, but a just a couple more questions if you wouldn't mind...
Does Tom Tom 7 work OK on it and does the lack of the touch pad really make a lot of difference...
I tried using my phone without touching the pad and I found navigating test to be a pain, but that may just be because I am just used to the pad, and I guess I will just get used to it not being there.
Just want to make sure before the jump as it will be my phone for the next eighteen months, and as its something I use every day then I just wanted to make the right choice.
The only other phone I was looking at now was the Omnia II but no keyboard
Again real big thanks for all the replies.
No problem, mate, i also read the "i got mine" thread over and over before buying since I was practically "engaged" with my sex1 at that time. My gripes for sex1 was smallish 4-row keyboard (i have fat fingers too), non-flushed screen and no accelerometer. I trade those for lack of d-pad, and after a month now i'm content The keyboard is a feast! (take this from a guy who had used several devices with sliding keyboard)
I use Garmin XT so i cannot comment on Tomtom which doesn't have map for my region. *IMHO, touch and drag is faster than clicking d-pad*
And the autorotate can be tweaked to work all-time (default is only limited programs).
Responsiveness is excellent in stock rom, with minor tweaks it beat tytnII running the fastest 'naked' custom ROM. Symbian (N97)? I read many reviews and most are not very happy with its responsiveness, so i can safely say it's unmatched =)

no one willing to give his opinion on this?
OK, finally got round to taking the plunge and got one on contract from Vodafone as Orange tells me they are not stocking the phones anymore.....
Got it on Your Plan 100 + unlimited Mobile Internet for £25 a month and only had to pay £60 for the phone
Thought it was a good deal as its the same as my current Orange plan.
Due for delivery tomorrow.
Going to be fun re-installing all the apps stuff I want on it.
