Universal upgrading question. Read Wiki and almost sorted - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro Software Upgrading

Hi everyone.
I have decided to upgrade my 02 XDA EXEC and have spent several hours reading the Wiki and various topics in here before I attempt anything.
The only part I am stuck on is:
Do I need to run the super CID tool before flashing or can I use the Universal RUU instead? I am really not bothered which way I go but thought I would ask the peeps here with more experiance before I upgrade.
My device is a 02 XDA Exec,G3 v1.01.
Thanks in advance......Rich

you can do either, but my choice would be the patched RUU as you dont have to change your cid (always safer)

Thanks for the advice,I will give it a go later
cheers...Rich

Restoring to Origonal t-Mobile Vario II Rom

Hi,
I used to use an O2 EXEC and was happy playing around with ROMS as I could always download the origonal from o2
I cant find a simular download from T-Mobile so am uncomfortable trying the new HTC WM6 Rom as my phone is new!! and I cant go back (in case of warranty claim etc)
I've seen various threads on backing up Roms but they state you cant restore using these backups
So is there a download (like the o2 one?)
Or can someone post step by step instructions of how to do it manually (if possible)
Many thanks
Jonathan
Check the wiki. many original shipped roms are there.
Something like wiki > hermes > original shipped ROM.
If you use the google search tool linked in my sig and search for something like:
hermes rom original
you will probably find it too. Also, mrvanx.org has a good guide for this.
Checked there alreay there is only a Hungarian English Rom (so still not able to reset to default!)
Guide on Modaco
There's a guide on Modaco that I successfully followed. After my first flash to WM6 I had to downgrade to WM5 to restore a SPB Backup (forgot to activesync first, and spb backup wouldn't restore on WM6 from WM5).
http://www.modaco.com/Paul-s-guide-to-backin-t255090.html
Also, you may want the t-mob splash screens as these are not extracted, I've attached them for your pleasure (use the guide on mrvanx's site to convert and flash them, paying VERY close attention to the instructions, do it wrong and you'll have to reflash).
Also, it goes without saying, make sure you have installed HardSPL
The guides on MrVanx's site are good for newbs (it's what I used first time around)
Thanks Philjohn,
Thats EXACTLY what I was after!!
I've already got a backup of the OS and ExtROM for T-Mobile - and I'm sure IPL SPL are available.
The only thing is if you upgrade the radio rom past 1.28 (I think...) you can't go back as there is currently no way to downgrade the radio bootloader...i doubt anyone in the warranty\whatever dept. would notice that though...
If you get stuck, PM me

New to upgrading on Hermes

Hi, im new to upgrading on hermes but not wizard, switched from wizard to hermes.
i could read all tutoria;;s and stuff but..just dnt want to...yet.
so, need to know some basic things like..
its gonna be an untouched phone, (windows mobile 5, cid&sim locked)
do i need to CID Unlock my phone? (probably yes)
do i need to find a stable Radio version...like the wizard?
if i do, can u recommend one?
and what else do i need to know?
thanks.
i think u just take some times to search in this forum the way to flashing your rom. (sorry, bad english..)
you dont have to read all the tutorials..
you just need to read the wiki...
as for not reading and just asking its abit lazy and frowned upon but:
you need to sim/cid unlock,
hardspl
flashing radio can be very dangerous on the hermes so read the wiki..
i recommend 1.47.30.10
all information can be found on the board or wiki so get reading before posting in future its alot easier.
I would stick with the orginal radio came with the phone. It usually dont make much difference to me where i live! Also I recommend flashing radio if you have to using SD card method.
Always read wiki, and good luck flashing!

What the man said, excelent advice. Use POF unlocker to sim unlock your phone and also make it SuperCID, that way you can use the MicroSD card method with any ROM (NBH).

DIAM200 and ROM Upgrade

Hi
I successfully upgraded my Wizard, Hermes and TyTNII in the past but it all seems v confusing for the Diamond. All posts on xda seem to refer to Diamond other than the 200 version, which I got on TMobile UK.
I think I successfully upgraded to HardSPL - when in bootloader mode, it reads SPL-1.38.OliNex (it used to be SPL1.37.0000)
Is there any restriction as to what Radio and Rom I can upgrade my device to? I used the signed version of SPL, if it helps.
Please don't ask me to "search", I have just done that for days but there is no one place with all the info, I used modmydiamond.info thing but I got stuck at 0% having followed the instructions, and as I said there seems to be no advice at all for DIAM200 series. I also attempted to upgrade the radio to 1.00.25.05 - I seem to be running 1.00.25.03 as I write - I got stuck at 0% and went into the recovery mode, so no luck all round... What is the problem? Could someone tell me what the official TMobile UK Radio version is? Not sure if mine is the original one or the one I attempted to upgrade to.
thanks
see.

sig.
seriously. if you had searched you would have found this. this has been asked incredibly often by an insane amount of users. well as i said. see my sig.

It really has all the info you need to do this properly.
I read through the flashing section & it was nice & clear & a perfect n00b like me (when it comes to mobile phones) managed to suss it out & get my device nice & hunkydory.

[Q] Could use help with S-OFF and Firmware

I got the bootloader unlocked with HTC Dev and rooted, installed TWRP. I installed Revolution (?) rom but had the restarting issue I presume because of the firmware being incompatible. Searching ways to achieve S-Off leaves me a bit confused though. Could someone hold my hand through the process or direct me to where I can update my Firmware and apply the newer Roms please? Thanks.

OMG do I agree with that post! When you ask about how to do this, they point you to a thread with 300+ post and say its in there, go read... Ive been reading for 2 freaking days and Im more confused then ever!!! CID, SUPERCID, brick without them... NO explanation from there. REALLY!?
Now some people go OUT OF THEIR way to help you, where others seem to just say search the forums. With any of the searches, there is 4000+++ hits, it would be time to upgrade before I read them all. Ive read. Im still reading. Heck, I'm about to ADB back to stock to by pass s-off because of the lack of info, or its scattered across 5 or 6 threads. Sorry for the rant, but Im tired, sleepy, and cant find the info on the threads. Ive done my time reading, came out worse then I started...
Guys, I know your first few weeks at xda can be frustrating, but there are reasons why we do it this way and why requests for hand-holding don't go over well.
First, this is, as the name says, a developers' forum where a certain amount of technical knowledge is assumed. All of us were noobs once, but we got past that by reading and asking intelligent questions, not throwing up our hands and begging to be spoon-fed. If you get less-than-helpful responses, it's often because what seems baffling to you is a question that gets asked regularly to the point that people get tired of dealing with it. S-off and firmware updating are in that realm.
Second, and more importantly, once you go s-off and start mucking with firmware, there is a very real chance of bricking your phone if you're not careful. So having a solid understanding of what you're doing is critical. The people who brick are the ones who rush the process and miss or skip important steps because they don't realize why they exist.
Now, having said that, I can give you a little guidance.
S-off for the M9 is pretty idiot proof at the moment. It's only possible through a paid app, Sunshine. You download it, install it, and it will tell you if s-off is possible for your phone. If so, you buy a license for $25 and run it. Done.
Updating firmware is trickier, but this thread is the best place to start. Read the whole thing from the beginning (especially the first few posts), and if there's anything you don't understand, asking specific questions will usually get you helpful responses.
Good luck!
Good advice from iElvis to go slowly and try not to rush before gaining necessary knowledge .
Usually for example with firmware flashing thread all relevant info is contained in the first four posts written by original poster.
Basically if you are S on you may only flash firmware that matches your currently installed software.
When you have S off (as described above by iElvis) then you may flash any firmware, by changing cid if necessary.
Firmware flashing done in download mode via command
Fastboot flash zip nameofirmware.zip
Phone will flash part of firmware then reboot to download mode,
Then you enter same command again and remainder of file is flashed.
Then you're good to flash custom roms based on the firmware you flashed.

I am not new to xda or flashing roms , but definitely new to htc device. The problem is Alot of threads don't seem to explain "Why" .
your quote here has explained something so simple, that unfortunately was made to sound so complex in some other threads. Also many threads give slightly differing or slightly incomplete instructions. thats why I notice many people asking for a "FULL guide" and even some people offering to "donate if you can help me step-by-step update firmware" .
So , can i ask, just to clarify, after S-off, then SuperCID, we can flash any firmware update from any region? eg If i am from 1.32.710 i can flash 1.40.401 firmware? And ONLY then i can flash a custom rom that MUST be 1.40.401?

Yes, you can flash any firmware for your model. You can't for example, flash cdma firmware on a gsm phone (nor should you try).
But you don't necessarily have to match rom to firmware. It's advisable for best performance, but not always necessary. in this case, however, there is a conflict between firmware and kernel across 1.32 and 1.40—they need to be the same. That means you can run a 1.40 rom over 1.32 firmware as long as you have a 1.32 kernel running (this is my current configuration). But if you have 1.40 firmware, you pretty much have to run a 1.40 rom.
I am missing somethihng some where.. Ive tried the steps above, although no "guide" said anything about supercid. However, Ive tried to flash the firmware, and i do get a cid mismatch error. So I'm stuck and lost. I dont know what to do... Cid is being reported differently depending on how I get it, Adb reports htc_001, the app and the scrip report CWE_001, and I cant seem to find anything to flash to it. Im literally pulling out my hair.
