Here is a quick guide, gathering information that has been exchanged and spread accross many threads on this forum (Searches can be fastidious, I know that well...)
I have been reading this forum a lot, keeping on asking questions to everybody, so it's time I contribute a bit to help by describing step by step how I switched my Japanese WM5 Softbank X01HT to a WM6 English device
This post is target at Gaijins who want an English WM6, but still want to be able to use Japanese with it. For a Japanese MUI or ROM, I guess Asukal will probably publish something

I was first willing to cook a ROM including all these, in order to spare some space on my HERMES. I had already cooked an "intermediary" one when Tadzio issued his method to make a "shrinked" OS ROM that would allow you to use the spare space from the ROM
Since this, no point in adding all these mods in my ROM
First: making flashing safe
Download Hard-SPL-V2 from the great Olipro to avoid bricking your device. Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=296722
Install it
Then, get your ROM.
Download the_passenger ROM shrink version of LVSW 20070320 ROM (More space available) and install it (Read threads about flashing ROMs if you are not familiar with that...)

Install the Softbank AP Settings for your internet connection. You really WANT that. Big thanks to itamae without whom we'd be stuck on first of April this year... (Or I'd still be using WM5)

Now you need a Registry editor
I am used to PHM Regedit. You can find it there for free:

To map properly your Softbank Keyboard, do the following registry modifications:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Oem\Qwerty] "Layout"= 30411 (Hexadecimal base)
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\keyboard layout\Preload] "Default"= e0010411
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\keyboard layout\Preload\1] "Default"= e0010411

To allow the video Call key to appear on your phone keypad, modify the registry as follows:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Phone\Skin] Enabled = 1
Optional: getting rid of useless trayapp (It looks nice... but it Slows down the Hermes and you can replace it with better apps)
Delete TrayApp key from [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\init]
Fix the disappearing micro SD (Doesnt really work for mine... But could work for yours...)

Use the excellent work from Asukal, that you can find here:

I did have a problem with it: once I executed it, I could not sync with my Exchange server (Quite a pain for my push email account...)
Asukal found the solution: edit the registry, and change
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mobem\CE-Star] "MyNLS" = "\windows\wince.nls"

If you prefer a Japanese input without the annoying "Floating bar", ie just the same input way as your original WM5 Softbank ROM, just downlaod and install the "MS IME31 J" link from Asukal's page:

Silent mode switch
You're going to be missing the Softbank unique way of switching to silent mode (Only available in Softbank ROM)
The way to go around this is by using Vibra

MMS
Softbank's MMS System is a pain because it's incompatible with "classic" MMS systems...
You can download Softbank's software... But... it's slow, big, bulky, ugly, etc... If you dont mind missing the emoticons, you should go for MMSLite
Regedit, Look for Arcsoft. Delete all references to Arcsoft (Sometimes need to be done in several times, some entries being in use if you have by mistake launched MMS Composer once since your flash of the OS...)
If you dont do these eletions, MMSLite will actually not install...

I you have enough courage (And ONLY after having installed Hard-SPL 1.11 !!!), you can try flashing your radio

Now you're done, you have a great phone with a faster OS, more storage space, improved battery life, that works perfectly with Softbank AP, can use Softbank proprietary MMS system, and can read and write Japanese
After, there are lots of other things you can do, like mounting your Extended ROM to gain extra space, Unlock the SIM, etc, etc... But it is not the purpose of this thread. Have fun reading the forum, it is well documented in other threads

The only problem when upgrading is the Japanese input. I used sometimes (so I need it), but I I install Japanese input package you told in your post the I have a really annoying floating bat anywhere, and it's really unnoying.
There is no way to have same kind of input in enlish ROM?

Try Asukal's IME package (see bottom of page):

No, no floating bar.
It works just like the IME from the Japanese WM5 ROM.

I actually installed the Japanese ROM you linked to, it works like a charm, but I have a question to SoftBank users :
I'm going to work in Japan soon (1st of April) but I want to use my Hermes as my primary phone, etc. Is it possible to go to a SoftBank shop and tell them basically "Don't ask me how, but this phone is SoftBank-compatible. Now please register it into the SoftBank network and gimme a standard phone subscription. Thanks".
Meaning how can I register my phone (SIM card ? I looked and they seem to have only outrageously expensive SIM cards on loan for 108円 a day, with no 3G connectivity. Or is it possible to get a standard subscription?)?

Really? I don't get a floating bar.
Did you try it on a clean installation of WM6, or did you install it after installing the Bagojs IME? Maybe some settings in the registry are causing the bar to appear.
Also, did you set your locale to Japanese in "Control Panel->System->Regional Settings"?

- Install LetNo5 (Jp Font)
- Install BajosIME
- Install AkusakIME (on device) not in storage card
It work for me and my friends, perfect !!!

You shouldn't need to install both BagojsIME and Asukal's IME package, just Asukal's. BagojsIME provides an older version of the MS IME.
Use you own phone with SB
You can pick a ZERO Yen phone to do a new contract with SB. Then change the sime card to your onw phone. Suppose you have a sim-unlock phone.

I didnt have to install anything to get the Manner mode working. I think this is implemented in WMXL. But when i set the phone skin security to 1
my phone pad disappears, turns white. Renders unusable. The only fix for me is to set it back to 0.
This might be due to the carrier setting, it happens immediately after running SB external rom carrier info.
Any ideas?

I based my work on DXHD1 and changed the file mxip_oemdrivers_101.provxml, using the one from the first cooked rom appeared on this forum.
This rom includes Windows Live Messenger and now this can work with whatever connection, wifi included.
I wanna thank chaimd, jugglerLKR (for his conv3 source code) and topogigi.
So, here's the rom (only PDA part), if you wanna try (I'm running it on my i780). Obviously, there's no warranty.

No only that file: this is my first rom and I did something simple.
It's incredible that only this small file caused so many problems with Messenger.

also is it possible to update the driver only onto a current device without having to flash?

when I connect MSN to gsm provider it works, but as soon I connect it to wi-fi it doesn't work on gsm anymore, neither the internet explorer... only work using wifi
If you disable wifi, it will connect with gprs again.

I'm running DXHD1 with radio DXHC4 and I can't seem to find WLM installed on my device.
On my original ROM version I remember fiddeling around with something on the Today screen but this seems to be missing as well.
There are many WLM* files in my \windows directory including WLMMessenger.exe and .lnk. and WLMSetup.exe Which don't seem to do anything when I click them.
Is there something missing what am I doing wrong?
How do I use messenger on my device, Wifi or GPRS

That's strange: my HD1 (which is the one you can find here) has Windows Live correctly working.
I don't know what it depends on.

could you perhaps cook an alternative ROM with RealVGA integrated? Or perhaps a guide on how you cooked this ROM, I'd try to make one myself with some additional tweaks that I would like to have.. Thank You very much!
it cant be modified but u can overwrite the file with another of the same name in rom, i ovewrote my clock.exe for htchome to direct me to open a differnt program now working on hex of htchome.dll for me to change the target indicator of alarm on alarm off indicator in htchome

My Windows Live doesnt work with dxhd1. It says: bad reception or something. with the xdhc4 rom there was no problem. can someone help me?

DXHD1 forces Windows Live to connect only through GPRS and with thew default connection. To avoid this limitation you can use the DXHD1 modded version I made. Or you can use TotalCommander to replace the culprit file with a modded version.
Look for DXHD1 in the forum: in the thread related to my modded version you'll find incstructions on how to replace the file, if you don't want to flash your phone.
Does anyone knew how to disable the XT9 for Asus p750, im using WM6.1 by sorg I just want to change the default to ABC when Im writing an SMS.

I recently installed the 0.19 version of the Sorg VGA ROM and I must say, my P750 is working much more stable. I didn't notice any problem with the memory.
The main problem I now have is the following: I tried to disable xt9 functionality that was really annoying me. I found a site on this forum telling about a registry tweak. I tried it, but unfortunately the xt9 is still present. So I tried until I was able to disable xt9 and word suggestion feature. Now my problem is, that I only can type numbers!! With the virtual keyboard it works, with the physical one, it doesn't. I'm really desperate, I tried to revert my changes but nothing seems to happen. Even when I reset the device (after appyling registry changes) nothing but numbers!
So my question/request to you:
could somone out there make a screenshot of his registry (ASUS P750), of course not of the whole one but only of the following path, since this is the one I messed up:

This issue has been addressed in various posts throughout the forum. Next time just try to use the search feature and you may find the answer to what you seek. Anywho, here are the instructions to increase your MMS sending size limit...
1) Using a registry editor (such as Resco Registry, Total Commander) you'll need to edit a couple of registry values.
2) Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (HKLM)\SOFTWARE\ArcSoft\ArcSoft MMS UA\Config\mm1\MMSCSetting\T-Mo MMS (whatever you've named your MMS GPRS setting)
3) Change "WAP1SendDefaultSize" from '102400' to '307200'. Also, change "WAP2SendDefaultSize" from '102400' to '307200'. After making these changes--reboot the phone.
4) Your MMS messages should now allow you to increase your sending size to 300K.

Im trying to update to 6.1 using RUU_Excalibur_WM61_Kavana_Rickys_v24_Opera
I have read the FAQ's that rickywatt posted , but I am still confused and im not sure about the steps that follow after unlocking the Dash. I have downloaded SDA application unlock and SurrealNetworksAppUnlock.cab and of course Ricky's RUU_Excalibur_WM61_Kavana_Rickys_v24_Opera
According to the FAQ that rickywatt has
i did the following:
"... install SurrealNetworksAppUnlock.cab to your phone then extract
SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe from SDA_ApplicationUnlock.zip then
connect usb from computer to your phone wait for ActiveSync to connect once
connected run SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe then click remove lock then reboot phone ..."
I have no idea what to do after that

Hello everyone,
Im trying to update to 6.1 using RUU_Excalibur_WM61_Kavana_Rickys_v24_Opera
I have read the FAQ's that rickywatt posted , but I am still confused and im not sure about the steps that follow after unlocking the Dash. I have downloaded SDA application unlock and SurrealNetworksAppUnlock.cab and of course Ricky's RUU_Excalibur_WM61_Kavana_Rickys_v24_Opera
According to the FAQ that rickywatt has
i did the following:
"... install SurrealNetworksAppUnlock.cab to your phone then extract
SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe from SDA_ApplicationUnlock.zip then
connect usb from computer to your phone wait for ActiveSync to connect once
connected run SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe then click remove lock then reboot phone ..."
I have no idea what to do after that
the v24 (RUU_Excalibur_WM61_Kavana_Rickys_v24_Opera includes RUU_signed.nbh
ROMUpdateUtility.exe
Rapitool.exe
EnterBootloader.exe and Auto.Bat
Can someone help, as to tell me what exactly i should do now?
I did searched, I went on you tube and nothing.

Double-Click on the auto.bat file. Follow the instructions in the Prompt (black) box, to the T.

What he really means is keep hitting your space bar. The grammar in that auto.bat file is confusing at first -- I thought I had to follow the instructions and manually run the programs the .bat file was talking about. No, instead the only action you really have to take (other than connecting your phone) is hitting the center button once to get to the white screen; the rest just happens with you pressing any key to keep the batch file going.

Not that I am not please with 6.1, but how can I roll back to version 6.0?
Anyone know how/if its possible to roll back?

Yes... Just flash the 6.0 ROM back to your phone. If you're with T-Mobile, it can be found on the T-Mobile site.

What are the ATT settings for my Dash?
I am on ATT and just flashed to 6.1 using RUU_Excalibur_WM61_Kavana_080408_WWE.exe.

time zone issues???
anyone else having sudden changes in timezone after installing rickys 6.1?
could be the buttons are getting hit while its on my hip but now its happened twice in 3 days....

hey ricky thx for the update... is there a way to switch t9 on sms to Spanish?... the intuitive language is english and is annoying when typing a sms.
Also, the "play" music & video option has no associated file and prompts and error same thing with "Word".
my time zone is not even listed GMT-4.30 Caracas, fixed with a path found on MS Venezuela.
one more thing: after installing Opera mini 4.1, theres no icon anywhere.

Having an issue with making a ringtone.
I copied an mp3 to applicationData/Sounds
But when going to Settings > Sounds...I cannot find the mp3 in there. Only the basic 5 options appear.

I've installed Rickeys other Roms but having a hard time on a new dash. I've app unlocked the phone downloaded the zip and try to run the .dat and I get the black box follow the prompts then get error cant find romupdateutility.exe.
So I try and run the update utility manually I get to about three % then get the 270 error. re install the surell .cab file run the sda app unlocked and same issue. Error 270 also is the mirror working? Can anyone send me a working RUU.zip
IN the roms you have listed i didnt notice anyone talking about the features im looking for i hae flashed the rom.I know what to do and what not to do,the only thing i couldnt seem to find was the program for internet sharing to be able to use my phone as a modem,ths feature has to be ther for me to use these roms.any ideas on this ricky,and if you have time could you direct me to your rom that has these features in it..its a must for me,i installed kavanas rom last night,worked well,loved the slide features,and the many other features,was plenty fast for me,the only thing i couldnt find was the sharing program,any help would be nice thanks...

When you push Start and go to the Accessories folder you will see the program for Internet Sharing. It's in both V24 ROMs.

how to enable VOIP/SIP configuration in Windows Mobile ??
I use the AZTOR X2 Ultimative ROM, how can i make calls using the WLAN & mx SIP Provider.. Please dont suggest me Stupid Programms like Skype, Fring or etc. ! I want the original Windows Integrated VOIP Funktion.
advanced config tool is not the Solution for my Question, tell me any Registry Hack or any Programm or cab to enable this Option!!

Well this is also a Question of mine, i am also interessted in this Function, i searched a lot and found nothing related to my Question. Just found silly Programms like Fring, Skype etc. how to enable this in WIndows, so that we can select VOIP/SIP Setting in Windows Settings !

Thanks for the Link it works fine on my ROM, but i also have a Orbit 2 with Original ROM, there it say Net Framework 2.0 must be installed to launch this Software. Any other Way to enable VOIP without this Software that need Framework ??

i have installed the CAB on the latest official rom (danish), but it gives an error, when it starts up, although i have installed the latest netCF v3.5. any clue???

I have installed the netCF v3.5 two times, because the official rom does not have the v3.5, but i am still getting the same error at startup. The link, which you mentioned i have tried that before, but i could not get it to work. I made the cab file and stuff, but it was not working. The only application that work is fring, but the sound quality is terrible. hmm, i do not know....

I'm having a same problem. I'm using XBMod 2.0 ROM, which has integrated the .netCF3.5.
