Icon/Notifcation Problem - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

Hello all, I am bit new to the 8525 game (tytn) just bought it actually. I am starting to dable here and there, I have tried schapps 4.22 and moved to K's rom. Now, I did a base install of the HTC wm6 rom (radio is 1.48), ran the sim/cid unlock, hardsplv7, and installed K's rom. Now I actived that HSPDA switch, but I never see it change. I tried installing schapps 2g dialer to see if it would be any different and nope it persists on the 3g icon. This did not happen before when I first tried Schapps 4.22 full (only thing different was not installing hardspl). Anyone have any insight on this?

Update your radio to 1.54. Also, the icon will change from H, 3G, E, and G depending on your speed. Enabling Hsdpa doesn't automatically change the icon to H. It only shows H if you are getting HSDPA speed. If you are getting 3G still after enabling hsdpa, perhaps the signal is not strong enough to reach hsdpa speed.

let me guess:
H = HSDPA
3G = Third Generation
E = Edge
G = GSM
am i right?

yea those are correct, as far as signal. I've tried it in many different locations, it never switches.

Save for G = GPRS. GSM is indicated by the bars.

you can reflash with schap's rom and see if the icon appears. I don't have the luxury to use hsdpa here so I've never tried it and I've never heard anybody saind anything about that in my thread.

the 1.54 did the job.

my guess is that your radio got downgraded when you flashed the other rom.

what is with the misinformation in this thread?
3G IS HSPDA, or more technically HSPDA IS 3G.
The only thing an H icon represents is data transferring on 3G. If there is no data being moved and you have a 3G signal, you will see the 3G icon. If there is data being moved and you have a 3G signal, you will see the H icon.

3G [3G] icon v.s. UMTS [U]

Okay,
This is driving me nuts, i've been a lurker on this forum for months now, and i've searched all over this forum (for the last 3 hours) to find a fix for this but I havent found one.
I'm in Australia, and we've got UMTS here, it's working because it says "UMTS Telstra" in the dialer, but other then that I've still got the 3G icon displaying at the top and it NEVER changes, its so annoying!
I've tried XDA Live 0.10, 0.20 and now i'm using the 15-03-2007 LSVW release and nothing's changed...
I know i'm not the only one experiencing this, but has anybody found a solution for it?
Other than that everything else works great!

Yeah but with WM5 it showed U for UMTS, G for GPRS, E for Edge etc...
Infact it was rare that i ever saw the 3G icon at all..
Its installed on certain ROMs and some roms have "U" by default and the ext rom installs the "3G" over it. We refer to it as 3G over here (I think many that use 3G will sit there and scratch their head at the mention of UMTS) so it dont bother me.
If my memory serves me correctly, the HTC 1.35 ROM has the "U" and not "3G"
Also there is a thread on this with some cabs to try if you run a search.

I've searched all over this forum, and I haven't found it... I think i did come across it once before but when i tried to look for it now I couldn't find it... (very annoying)...
I know the I-Mate roms show it as a "U" because thats what I had on prior to WM6
Any idea what i should search for? I've tried "3G Icon" and "UMTS"
Also the UMTS is just a text string you can change in the registry. For me I've changed the UMTS to HSDPA to correspond with our network offering in Canada.
But when not in a 3G coverage area that text string is no longer there.

Yeah i know about that one, I discovered it in XDA-Live 0.10...
If anyone could please post either the cleaner 3G icon or the "U" icon and instructions on how to install them, i'd be very thankful
If you let the ext rom on LVSW install then it will install the cleaner icon

I was annoyed by this when I moved to WM6 too.
Doesn't this help?

This cab work's good for me with wmxl 0.21
Wow, something this small annoys you? Why does it matter?
As several of us have said elsewhere, we get areas of standard signal, "3G" signal, and HSPDA signal. Without three icons, we can't distinguish between them.
Once again:
G = okay signal and speed.
U = good signal and 3G speed (upto 384 Kbps).
H = very good signal and speed upto (in my case) 1.8 Mbps.
When "U" and "H" signals both display as "3G", you can't tell if you've moved into an HSPDA area. In my case, I move across my office and it goes to "H" and I get better speed - so it's VERY useful when I want to browse or download stuff (or watch SlingPlayer).
Fair enough. I don't use any telco-supplied data so I wasn't sure. I always connect to local wireless.

Thanks for that, but unfortunately it doesn't work, i'm still stuck looking at the disgusting 3G icon.
I don't know why it annoys me so much lol, I think i'm just so used to looking at the "U".

I don't see what's wrong with the 3G icon...I think it looks more beautiful than the just the U icon. After all.....it's called 3G technology...which is a simpler name instead of the technical name.
My experiences:
LVSW first version gives a nice looking 3G icon when I've got UMTS coverage. When HSDPA is used, it show the 'H' icon (only when connected!).
However, the second LVSW version shows a 'stretched' 3G icon.
Is this also fixed by the cab file mentioned earlier?

hi,
do a search for shogun_Uicon.cab,that should take care of U probem...
after that do a registry hack for H icon and u r set to go....
hope it works
Hey all,
I installed the LVSW ROM onto my iMate. I've had the same problem mentioned here before (not displaying as UMTS)...
I think the reason for it is quite simple, at least for the Telstra users.
NextG nextwork is counted as a normal 3G network.. not as a UMTS network. The original WM5 rom that was supplied might have had some sort of hack in place for us JasJam users...
Anyways, now I actually get a HSDPA logo on my phone, letting me know about speeds...
*shrugs*
The TEST WWE AKU 3.3 Full ROM that I was given to test displayed the connection as follows:
G GPRS
U 3G
H HSDPA
I never saw an E as we don't have Edge in our area.
I changed the U display to read 3G with a posted registry hack.
The G correctly displays GPRS network
The 3G correctly displays 3G or UMTS
The H correctly displays when a data package is sent or received.
Maybe this information can lead you in the right direction with the WM6 os.
Cheers

HSDA <-> UMTS automated switching?

I've seen in my TyTN, WM6, radio 1.34 a (strange?) behaviour. I noticed with VODAFONE : I have a plain UMTS connection 3g icon and 3g data connection alive, used for push e-mail.
When I am in HSDPA area and data connection starts data transfer, I see a switch between 3G and H connection, then revert after 1-2 seconds ad the end of data transver back in UMTS mode.
Hypotesis:
1) Could be a simple WM6 LVSW edition bug
2) Could be a WM6 feature (HSDPA has well known problems in voice phone avaliability when active)
3) Could be a Vodafone Network feature, HSDPA onli when needed
4) 1.34 radio compatibility problem/feature?
5) ......
6) I am stupid and this is a well known fact
Question:
Any other wm6 user noticed same behaviour?
It has always worked like this, HSDPA is ON when you need it, not all the time.
thats part of the design, saving resources for the network.

This isn't working this way for all mobile phone providers in Italy, with TIM if you are in HSDPA area it will stay connected... and you're off-line if someone calls
May be we discovered why isn't enabled as DEFAULT setting and we need to enable using SetHSDPA.exe

Ditto in Australia. If im connected to GPRS, the icon is permanently showing HSDPA... unless of course i only have GSM coverage (very rare!!).
In Taipei, it works exactly as elivne says... H only when needed.
Cheers
FWIW, I didn't experience proper "throttling" in and out of HSDPA mode until I upgraded to WM6 and radio 1.38 (not sure which to thank for it). Prior to that whenever I was in H coverage, the radio would run almost exclusively in H mode. Talk about battery drain! Currently I can run for almost 2 days between charges (and that's with push mail).
How a particular combination performs for you must depend a lot on the carrier, your locale, etc. Took a lot of "trial and error" for me.
Yep, I'm on UK T-Mobile, and my icon only switches from "3G" to "H" when it's active.
As vp3G says, it noticably saves battery power from the old "permanent HSDPA" behaviour. Although I can't claim to get 2 days usage out of mine.
It is a network feature. If you are inactive on HSDPA for t sec the network will downswitch you to UMTS ( called R99 ). Only 10 users can use the HSDPA at the same time and there is an inactivity timer ( t=10 sec) try to manage the traffic by moving inactive users to R99 ( max speed 384 kbps)
Thank you for sharing your knowlege Austin Boy....

Really only 10 simultaneous users? Seems like the odds of getting a timeslice when you need it would be virtually nil.
The 10 limitation can be increased by any operator by adding Channel elements (Radios) or more when adding another carrier ( frequency). Europe has more spectrum than the US and it is possible to get two carriers ( 2x5MHz) and use one for speech and the other for data. In the US we are sharing the spectrum between GSM and UMTS. AT&T will be migrating GSM to UMTS gradually and using the 850 band for UMTS before moving to LTE (4G)

I have a similar switching scenario.
Prior to flashing my Radio to 1.38.00.10 and ROM to Black 2.0 I tested my download speed at www.dslreports/mspeed and was please to see I got almost a 1Mb/sec rating.
However since the flashes I have re-tested and am now only getting 250-300 kb/sec. It may be the network, so I will try on a few separate occasions and different locations.
NB. I have enabled HSDPA in HTweaksC
I noticed during the test that the download bar jumps staright up immediately but then slows down quite a lot?

3 ITA is working same way.
Enabling HSDPA only when there is data transfer active.
Okay tried again on my commute home, and also when I got to my house.
Speed is looking good ! getting up above the 1mb/sec rate again.
Must have just been a busy cell/network
ok... i have a spv m3100 with black 3.0.1 wich is suposed to be HSDPA enabled... i have also enabled it in the tweaker.... today for the first time i have seen the icon H... in my area there is no HSDPA coverege... none... but i read today that untill the end of the year they are trying to cover it... and i was thinking that they are already making tests... i tested my speed at http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/ and i had a 145 kilobits per second speed... wich as far as i know it is similar to 3g... i disabled the HSDPA and tried a few times in 3g... the speed was 135 kb/s... to small the difference...
so... my question... what is the tweaker doing?... enableing HSDPA or just replacing the 3g icon with the H icon?
no one???

cingular 3g problem

i bet that this has been answered thousands of times and i probably haven't just found the thread but i have a cingular 8525 and i upgraded to wm6 lvsw it great but i cant seem to get the 3g network back and all i get is that big E for edge and i want to get back on the 3g network i have applied all the cingular setting cabs in the wiki but if any of you guys can help id appreciate it and sorry if this isn't in the right place thanx guys
The settings for 3g are the same as the settings for gprs/edge.
Maybe you need to go into settings->phone->band and make sure your network type is auto or (wcdma) and your GSM/UTMS band is set at GSM(1900+850)=UTMS(1900+850)....
I ran into the same problem numerous times. there also seems to be a few issues with the data connection. I don't know if it is the ROM or radio but it is pretty anoying.
Another issue I have been experiencing is the weird behavior I get sometimes when I receive a phone call. twice it frooze on me and I ended up missing an important call. I am thinking about going back to some of the other roms.
I have the same problem running the Black 3.1 and end up with "E" EDGE" connection most of the time instead of "3G" that I got with the Black 2.5 and the Custals new Rom. Your phone or device will connect with the fastest technology that it supports and that the network supports in that area. If you have an HSDPA phone or PDA, you will automatically get HSDPA (or UMTS) or fall back to EDGE (or GPRS) if the signal or network can support.
3G and 2.5G are interchangeable
2.5G = GPRS and EDGE
3G = UMTS and HSDPA

What does the H stand for on the network?

I've seen E for EDGE, 3G and at home I always have H, but next to T-Mobile it says 3G. What does the H stand for/represents?
hsdpa, its the fastest out of the lot
wiki
That explains why when I'm home and on the net it's just as fast as if I was connected to WIFI. I don't even connect to my WIFI at home anymore because H is pretty fast.
Thanks for the reply.
at least yours shows those icons. mine doesn't. I only know what i'm connected to when i actually connect & it shows in the signal bars. & i disabled showing 3G next to tmobile because that was just annoying.
haven't encountered the H here in phoenix either.

I believe that the "H" will depend on the icon pack that you pick. I'm trying to recall if I saw an "H" when I had the stock T-Mobile icons or if it was just "3G" instead.

I think you're right because when I had the T-Mobile stock ROM I had no H it was just 3G. Until I got the Europe MW 6.5 ROM I saw it and now I'm on the EnergyROM.
yes i only started seeing the H after i installed the 1% battery on the stock rom.
It stands for HSDPA which in turn stands for High Speed Downlink Packet Access
My 3G is faster than your 4G
If and when you see your buddy bragging about hdmi in their HTC EVO, the H on hour phone allows you to quip back:
[bold] "My 3G is faster than your 4G" [/bold]
here's the proof:
http://pocketnow.com/software-1/video-htc-evo-4g-vs-htc-hd2
H = HSDPA
H+ = HSPA+ (On the T-Mobile G2, which is considered 4G for T-Mobile)

T-Mobile HSDPA

I just purchased T-Mobile's version of the Touch Pro 2 about a week ago. I moved from AT&T and the TyTN II.
On the TyTN II, whenever I was on HSDPA, the connection icon would display an H. On my Touch Pro 2, I only ever see a "3G" icon. However, my connection settings are set to use HSDPA/HSUPA. I have unlimited web service, for what's it's worth.
Is this normal? Am I in fact getting HSDPA service? If not, is it a registry fix? Is there anyway to check for sure what protocol I'm connected with?
I would like to know that as well, Its normal same thing on my tmo tp2
I see the "H" symbol, but only when actively downloading data. It switches back and forth which I think is a good thing. No problems on this end running the stock T-Mo ROM
yeah I kept getting the 3G icon too, but after i put on tsowen's taskbar, now I get the H & i don't think i've seen the 3G at all.

I have only seen the H icon after installing a custom taskbar as well. I'm not sure if it just replaced the 3G icon right out or if it is correctly displaying it.
My g1 displayed 3g when i had the t-mobile firmware on it. When i put a different one, H or something was displayed. The tp2 i have is the same way. I put a different firmware on it and it went from 3g to H now. I am not using the t-mobile firmware but one of the 6.5 roms. I would bet t-mobile put the 3g icon on purpose.
H and 3G are the same thing on the phone. It just depends on what your ROM is setup to show it as.

they are not the same:
3G = 364 Kbps
HSDPA (3.5G) = 1.5-3 Mbps
i get at least 650kbps with 3G only icon. So i think im on the H

I was referring to the phone just showing 3G or H not the actual speeds.
I'm in the same boat as you guys. When I was on the stock ROM I only saw 3G with 2 bars and this was at my house. Now that I'm on a cooked ROM, I see H all the time with my 2 bars at my house. I only get the H when I'm at home, but when I'm at work I get 3G with full bars. I don't even have the option to use HSDPA checked, I have it unchecked in the options.
I'm sure the H has to do with the cooked ROMs or custom taskbars. Idk!
