Hi all new? here got an o2 orbit need advice? - P3300, MDA Compact III General

Hi all new? here got an o2 orbit need advice?
Im just wondering what i could and should do to improve it, its currently runnin on wm5 i have the official file to update to wm6 but dont want to lock out my orange sim card ?
any advice ?

Hi can i install these special roms on this site without messing up the usual features on my phone . Pleases help?

Yes you can. Make sure you unlock the CID first: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=308242

Cheers m8 so which rom is recommended at the moment and i wont mess up my phone will i as im unlocked o2 at the moment. Also can i backup my rom im using now simply?? thx again

I have the same phone on o2, (I didn't know Orange done this phone ?) anyway, I would reccomend this ROM, its what im using.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=342298
It is based on Windows mobile 6, and has all extra toys to play with.
Read the post, see if you like it (its best one IMO)
Download it, do step one first (This is CID unlocking), then step two (flash the device).
I think you can backup your device now but it depends on what you want to backup.
If you mean backup your contacts, SMS messages, photos ect then sure you can. Copy them with activesync or search google, there are many programs out there.
If you mean backup your device entirely (As in ROM) im pretty sure you can but its not needed. You will find on this site both the offical ROM that your phone came with WM5 so you can go back to that, or the offical ROm for WM6 so you can go back to that.
All custome ROMS are SIM unlocked so you will be able to use your orange sim card.
Hope this helped.

Need advice on the best way of rebuilding my Orbit

Time to kill my Orbit and start again....
It's running painfully slowly and the GPS won't work so I'm going to hard reset my XDA and get rid of the O2 crap, then install TomTom. I know all this stuff is here somewhere but I’m up to my eyeballs in tech articles so…. Questions:
1. Should I upgrade the ROM, and if so can anybody point me to a suitable ROM image? If I do this should I unlock it first?
2. What's the best way of getting a clean install - is it to hard reset then soft reset before the O2 stuff loads? Or should I go for a cosporate install option (is this available for the Orbit) And how do I hard reset?
3. is there an easy way of setting up the O2 connection settings afterwards or do I have to do it manually?
Lots of questions and not enough time….
I have an O2 Orbit. Best thing to do is get it unlocked by imei-check. Then run USPL program from mobile6 forum. Makes it a lot easier to fix if something goes wrong at any time. After this you can flash the ROM to your hearts content. I use Black&Bluev3 and i can truly say that WM6 is amazing. To get a clean install just do a Hard Reset then when it boots back up, before the O2 customization routine runs just Soft reset. That's all there is to it. As far as O2 setting go. Have a look through the upgrading forum. There are usually a few postings of O2 settings. If not let me know. I have the HTC UK settings file on my PC. Anything else you need help with let me know.

Thats different to my understanding of things.
If you are thinking of upgrading the rom (instead of just hard resetting the phone) then you will need to either get your phone CID unlocked with the imei-check team or run the Artemis USPL application prior to loading the new rom file. The USPL program temporarily 'unlocks' the CID whereas imei-check does it permanently. Once you've done either of these methods (I ran USPL as didn't want to pay £40 when I could get it done temporarily for free) you can then flash any of the roms suitable for your phone. I've got an o2 UK supplied Orbit and went with Tom's Black & Blue v3.
When you load the B&B rom it writes over the extended rom so all of the o2 programs are cleared so no need to soft-reset once its been flashed. This way will give you a fully functional phone with a lot of preinstalled apps (all of which are useful if not essential in my opinion) and none of the o2 junk on there.
Your other choice is to hard reset the phone and once its finished it'll prompt you about customising your phone. Simply soft reset before it gets a chance to run the ext_rom and none of the o2 crap will be on there. Now your phone will be pretty much as it left the factory with WM5 installed and thats it. If you're in the UK using o2 then the attached cab file contains all the settings that you'll need for MMS and GPRS etc.
As for question 3, see my previous statement about the cab file. Very useful to keep this as I've re-flashed my phone a few times and it makes the process a whole lot more bearable trust me!
thanks for the valuable info - I'll try Black&Bluev3 once I unlock. Excuse the ignorance, but do I just run the copy the O2 cab file to the Orbit, then run it from there?
Yep, as simple as that Probably best to copy it to your SD card and keep it on there as once the phone has been reflashed you won't have to connect up to a pc to install the network settings.
everything seemed to have gone fine, but after restarting the phone won't recognise the sim - before i even had a chance to enter the pin 3 times it reported that it required the unlocking code, and then refused to accept the unlocking code once I'd got that.
So now I've got a very sleek PDA, but no phone Any idea where I can get an O2 ROM from as I can't see it listed in the Artemis list, and am I looking for a ROM or extended ROM (what is the difference anyway?)
TIA
Peter
The b and b rom your usings originates from the leaked o2 orbit german rom - changed to wwe by bepe and tweaked by tom. So firstly i would try a hard reset or reflashing the rom. You dont need to flash USPL again as its an os only rom. If still not working flash original wm5 rom - see sticky in artemis mobile 6 forum for the link.

HELP! (noob)

Hi,
So i just got my MDA compact III (HTC Artemis) and I have noticed that people upgrade them to windows mobile 6.
Unfortunatley this is my first WM phone so I don't understand all these technical terms (ROM, Cooking, CID etc)
can anyone help me? is it worth upgrading? how do i back all my info up? what happens if it goes wrong?
thanks in advance.
COngrats on your new phone.
It is always worth it to upgrade to WM6.
There are 2 kinds of locks: CID and SIM.
SIM locks prevent you from using say a TMO phone on ATT.
CID unlocks prevent you from flashing a new ROM (like a wm6 distribution)
You can use some backup utility to well, back up. Search the forum for one.
If something goes wrong, you can just reflash the RUU, which stands for ROM Upgrade Utility. It has the "default" rom that you get from your new phone.
Thanks. This helped a lot.
Where do I get the WM6 distributions from? how do I install?
does the RUU come with the phone or do I download it from somewhere?
With all due respect to fzzyrn IT IS NOT ALWAYS WORTH UPGRADING!
Since this is your first WM phone and you just got it you should take a few weeks and get to know it.
There rule to follow here is: if it is not broken do not fix it!
WM 6 has only a few small new features (major one being HTML email support) which you may find you do not need.
First thing you need to do is to read the WiKi. You will find detailed explanation about terms like ROM, CID and SIM unlocking there.
Then if you are still determined to upgrade you should be aware of the following risks:
1) If you bought your phone through a cell company changing ROM even to an official version from HTC will void your warranty!
2) You must take care and read the instructions that come with the update you are using. Preforming update incorrectly, having battery run out or phone disconnected from your computer will result in a "bricked" (unusable) device!
3) Some WM 6 ROMs, change your device hardware ID. If you have purchased any programs that lock on to that ID during registration they will stop working.
Now for your phone there are two options:
1) Official update on HTC site (if I am not mistaking should be out already, but I am not sure)
2) "Cooked" or unofficial ROMs. Look for instructions in Artemis forum.
Keep in mind that ROMs are device specific. There is no such thing as generic / universal ROM.
Also keep in mind that various ROM versions including official WM 6 have different bugs. There is no answer to which is best or a guarantee that you like any of them better than your original WM 5 ROM.

HTC ROM on Tmobile Dash

I plan to switch to HTC ROM after I unlock my phone thru imei.. folks.
I plan to use the following files HTC_S620_WWE_1.27.405.1_4.1.13.44_02.94.90_Ship for the ROM and RUU_Excalibur_SPL-1.11_UpgradeOnly for the bootloader.
Is this the latest/greatest ROM from HTC ?
Is it possible to switch back to the Tmobile ROM incase I need to ? Any special instructions for how to go about doing that ?
Thanks, . Appreciate all the help ..
U actually dont need to imei unlock ur phone, u can actually just use the excalibur update spl from jocky http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=329605 . After u do all of that stuff u can load any rom that compatible with the Dash/S620/S621. I have used this method and flashed my phone with the HTC ROM, and the Rogers radio and it is way faster than the t-mobile rom, and more reliable. The only thing is that you need to manually install office mobile if u want it on ur phone. U can switch back to the t-mobile rom if u dont like it the same way u switched to the htc rom. One thing to remember about the HTC rom, is that u need to manually configure ur MMS settings, here a link for that http://tmobileuspublic.wdsglobal.com/mms?ispId=&mmsId=&wapId=&contractId=235&countryId=37&networkId=90&bearerId=5&phoneId=1426&manufacturerId=41&mobileNumber=&incomingServerId=. You also need to configure ur edge settings too, but u can do that with the same link i provided. Good luck, and im sure ull definitely like the HTC rom way better than the t-mobile rom
Unfortunately, the HTC rom is not as efficient as the T-Mobile one because it actually has multiple language packs. That's what I noticed. Right now, I am trying to find a way to rebuild ROM packages using BuildOS.exe and CreateOS.exe but no luck.

Thanks for the good info..
I have already got my phone unlocked thru imei_check.co.uk folks.
Do I still need to run the boot uploader or I can directly proceed to update the HTC ROM ? (HTC_S620_WWE_1.27.405.1_4.1.13.44_02.94.90_Ship ) ?
If I understand correctly, since i want to keep the option of reverting back to Tmobile ROM (for warranty reasons, in case I need it !), I need to use the boot loader you mentioned.. Please correct me if I am wrong
Thanks

I was succesfull in installing the above ROM, now when I go to Settings -> About .. I see the following "Windows Mobile 5.0 with Messaging and Security Feature Pack.."
Should'nt this say as Windows Mobile 6.0 ???
What am I missing here !!
Thanks
My mistake, I installed the 1.11.405 ROM which i think is wm5.
My copy of wm6 ROM 1.27.405.XXX is corrupt. Not sure from where I installed, if anyone is aware of some download area, appreciate if you could let me know .. Thanks
Ive got one problem with the HTC rom...
does anyone happen to know how to change the keypad to be US english? ive got the locale and language set to english (America) but if i go to use the (@) sign, ill get the english pound sign...or what ever its called.
also, i cant seem to access the windows folder from my pc any one know what i need to do to get it?
Use the search function to locate a file called eT9.Excalibur.0409.kmap
You may think to tinker this file. I installed the HTC ROM and observed that the '@" was being replaced by the pound currency symbol.
I eventually switched to Rogers ROM (downloaded from Rogers website) and all is fine now.
Thanks !
Search the forum for this info, it's been asked an answered previously.

Telstra branded diamond changing to different rom

I have a Touch Diamond branded by telstra after reading looking through the forum for a while I can't find an answer to a perplexing question ....
Has anyone tried to change the rom on a telstra branded TD to the vodafone rom?
Or has anyone changed to a custom rom with a telstra branded and to what success?
Thanks everyone in advance for help.
While I haven't tried the Vodaphone Rom I have tried a number of other ROM's Dutty's, Swifts, Panosha's Simple, and now Hikari ( i don't like the Tf3d). All have worked well on the Telstra Network. I can't see why it won't work on the Vodaphone network. My nephew's work fine on the Optus network.
To be really honest the only extra functionality you will gain from the Vodafone ROM is the Vodafone specific software and the theme.
If it's just the theme you are after I suggest browsing this forum for one.
Alternatively if you're after the Vodafone ROM for Vodafone SIM... I'd skip that and jump straight onto one of the custom ROMs. The phone performance is a HEAP better than any of the telecommunication company's stock ROMs.
Food for thought.
Im on NextG with Telstra and i have tried nearly every rom here except vodafone.. but the only one flaw with using a unbranded telstra rom is being able to access bigpond.. like with foxtel and all that.. just doesnt pick it up as being a 3.5G phone.
i dunno why.. but i have just put it back to telstra rom and modded it completely myself. if i knew how to take like an image of it i would and post it up here but i wouldnt know one thing about cooking roms lol
I have a Telstra branded Diamond and am using it with an Optus SIM.
When I first got the phone I couldn't get it to accept the Optus settings for Internet access.
So... I upgraded it to one of the cooked ROMS. (Dia Duit and Duttys were tried)
Since then I haven't gone back to the standard ROM and enjoy the better performance.

If you're talking about the Bigpong 'free to browse' page being different the all you need is to change the 'custom user agent' setting in Opera... see here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2688822&postcount=260
But anyway... to answer the OP, I've flashed a stack of ROMs from here and am currently happy with CT's latest (HD version). Just remember to keep the original specs (Radio & ROM version no.s) in case you need to revert for warranty.
thanks for all the help
thanks for all your comments
I bought the touch diamond second hand, and didn't realise till after I'd parted with the money it was branded (HUGE newbie mistake) but I haven't bought a new phone for 6 years since I got the Nokia 6620.
I use a vodafone sim, and have it working pretty well, just the last lot of telstra locked stuff annoys me. Thanks to this fantastic forum I have been able to change and unlock most of it. Biggest thing is some things just won't work on it, because the current Telstra rom is 1.38.841.5 (vodafone rom is 1.96.XXX.X) and experience a fair share of the modding apps & cabs have problems or simply don't work.
I was thinking of the vodafone one simply because I'm with them. Also when I was first trying to unlock it talked to HTC and they said I couldn't use the vodafone rom on my telstra branded because the hardware in the telstra one is different to the vodafone one.
Thanks for the help, can anyone suggest the best custom rom, & what else do i need to change roms? I've got a bit of a IT background, just not with phones.
Really love this little phone, and I see potential for tf3d, but long way of modding to get it as I want it.
Thanks again everyone.
I have a similar question, thought I'd save wasting a new thread and post it here.
I've had a Telstra branded Diamond for a few months now, using it with a 3 Mobile SIM, and have had no worries until a couple of days ago, when I started roaming, and haven't been able to reconnect to the three mobile network since..
Any ideas??
The only question regarding Telstra branded Diamonds is returning to original SPL 1.38 for warranty reasons..
just one more thought
another question or two...
If I upgrade to another custom rom will I still have to unlock it after the hard reset?
I've been looking and think I've found the rom I want, but can't find a definitive link for hard spl. I've read the thread that everywhere directs me to and the links that I think are for the unsigned hardspl has the headind stock spls, or am I just misreading this.
Also does anyone know if CT 6.4 is signed or unsigned?
Guys - I understand the confusion surrounding upgrading and flashing ROMs as it was only recently I was in the same position.
So in an attempt to make it a little easier for those reading here I will pass on what has worked well for me...
1. Flash HardSPL as downloaded from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=93362&d=1213719705 (it's unsigned but don't worry about that... it saves headaches if you want my opinion)
2. Download the ROM of your choice (as stated earlier - my preference is currently CT's v6.4HD... fast, stable and HD, what more do you want?)
3. Once you have the ROM, extract the .nbh file and rename it to DIAMIMG.nbh and copy this to the root of your internal storage on your Diamond
4. If you're ready to flash (meaning you've backed up whatever you wanna save) then hold the vol down and back button and press the reset button together until you see the tri-colour screen... you're then in the bootloader
5. The phone will search for the .nbh file you placed in memory and ask you to press the power button to confirm you want to flash... obviously you want to do this so sit back while it flashes
6. Once done, reset the phone and perform a hard reset (this is recommended by most ppl although I haven't always done it and never had any issues)
Now enjoy setting your phone up with a custom ROM...
If you want more detail then I strongly suggest you search around and read... it takes time and effort but it's definitely worth it if you want to flash with confidence...
Cheers
not as easy
Sorry if anyone read this orginal post just getting jitters when something went wrong with hardspl flash.
But a soft reset later and its still works. But it raises the question if something bad happens when flashing the hardspl and bootloader doesn't work what can be done apart from throwing phone away?
I assume as long as the bootloader works you can manually redo incomplete rom install?
Something going wrong with hard spl install is my biggest worry, it was a nats ear from happening a little earlier so I'm asking these questions.
Oh & last thing with CT's 6.4 rom what is the real difference between original TF3d and HD? How is the increased screen resolution handled? Do you have to scroll down for the area I cant see, or is it cut off so you can not access it, or is it squished to fit the smaller resolution?

As long as you can access the bootloader you should be able to sort out the phone... personally I've never had an issue with flashing (and on average I've flashed my two Diamonds (a 130 and 100) an easy 30-40 times).
My preference with flashing is to do it from the internal storage (seems the most logical in terms of reliability - and is also by far the fastest) but I'm not sure if HardSPL can be done that way - if it is possible I'd be strongly recommending it - USB connections are just too dicey for something that serious.

I have the OliNex 1.4 hard spl and I can flash CT's ROM without any problem.
done
Well it done.
A little easier than I was expecting but just as concerning, but over now.
Finally went with CT's 6.4 Original, I can always change to the HD or just add one of the HD add ons.
Everything is running smooth and well. Finally all the testra crap is gone.
Thanks to everyone for their help and kind advice.
This is a GREAT forum, its been a fantastic help and resource.
Till next time
How do you flash the new 2.03 ROM? I have tried with the executable from HTC and it gives me an invalid ID error.

HTC s621

ok im a bit lost but here is my situatoin and question...
Sit: I bought a Unicel HTC S621 phone works fine, but i want to upgrade the Mobile version from 5.1
Question: Is there a way to upgrade this with a T-Mobile 6.0 or higher version as i am a T-Mobile Customer?
Ponder: Is this phone the same as T-Mobile Dash? just curious because it appears to be.
Hi my friend. I have an htc s621 from mexico telcel, there is a lot of t-mobile roms in the roms section you should take a look there. They are the same phone as s621 is american and s620 is european.
Greetings
thanks alot just wanted to be sure they would work

Welcome to the forums
TY for the help i did read something, about unlocking CID... is there a way to tell if its unlocked?
i do know the SIM is unlocked as i have put my T mobile card into it and made calls and text with it in. So even tho its unicel phone i did get it does work with my t m sim.... i want to do this right, but am unsure if the CID is unlocked.
normally they come CID locked.
if you want to flash directly, turn off the phone, quit sd card and sim card and turn on the phone while pressing camera button, this will put your device into flash mode. Download a T-Mobile Rom and connect via usb, and run ROM update, if you get a error code then your device si protected or the model predefined is not the same as intended the update utility. You can "force" the ROM update using the tools that gmaniac2008 told you.
I like very much original rom, altough some cooked roms you can found in the rom section are very nice and have the latest windows mobile releases, lots of prebuilts apps and customizations.
in Official ROMS
you should install maybe this 1.22.531.6 (T-Mobile USA, WM6) because contains some configurations like mms, gprs, etc. from your carrier (to install this try the past method if dont works then you have to read more to force install)
A good choice if you want to try a custom rom, and they have autoinstaller (just need to quit sd and sim and turn on the phone, connect to usb, and run the utility. The utility is autoinstall.
is 080408 - Remade By Rickywatt windows mobile 6.1

Thanks for the help and guidance to the right ROM but one big problem, there is no romupdateutility.exe file in the .rar file i downloaded so how the heck do i get the update utility?
oh btw if it matters im running windows 7 x64
Just download the files, they contain te rom update utility. Just have to run.
Better if you make the update on Windows XP x32.
Take a further read on FAQs thread. Official updates (rom updates utilities) looks like RUU_EXCALIBUR_bla bla bla.exe
RUU_HTC_S620_bla bla bla.exe or
RUU_HTC_s621 etc etc etc
