I REALLY hate my reception - HTC Excalibur

When I got my Dash 2 weeks ago, I was really excited I finally was leaving Verizon with their high prices and crappy customer service however, in the past week or so my Dash has been activated, I've been having a real hard time using my phone.
My reception is horrible. In fact, while I have 4 bars at my house, I have to constanly move by the window to maybe have a decent conversation before my phone either A drops a call or B sounds like I'm trying to tune into a bad AM station where I lose the caller on the line while my phone says they're still connnected.
I'm basically using a TMO Dash with WM5 on it. At first it had the original Radio Software on it, it still had the same issue and it was successfully updated to the latest Rogers WM6 Radio software but I still have the exact same issues with reception.
Is anyone on the northside of Chicago, or anywhere else, having any T mobile reception issues with your smartphone? Whether you're at home or anywhere you go? If so please feel free to share your story.
I like this phone but unfortunately, unless I can find some kind of solution, I'm going to have to let it go or change companies. I can't do this

I live 5 minutes east of O'Hare and my phone works great

Should I ditch my Vairo 3 for an Iphone?

So this is the dilemma.
I have a T-mobile MDA vario 3 which drops calls when it is on the 3G network it went back to be repaired and came back with WM6.1 it was shipped with WM6 this was back in October 2008 then it worked no problems apart from my copy of Tom tom no longer worked but I could always use google maps if it came to it.
So Back in March it started playing up again would drop calls on the 3g network but when i set the network to GSM it was fine, but this was not acceptable as the reason I have this phone is for web and emails etc.
so I arranged for it to go back, before the bag arrived from T-mobile I managed to drop the phone into the cats water bowl it wasn't full submergered but it did get wet. and went a bit funny. I dried it out over night.
Posted it to teh repair place and I came back as 'Cannot be repaired due to water damage' with a nice picture of the inside of the phone showing somthing.
So now I have a Vairo 3 which doesn't work properly I am using my older Vairo 2 upgraded to WM6.1 via this website which is cool but doesn't have all the feature that the Vairo 3 has in WM6.1 the conversation like text messaging and the thing on the today screen with the time and stuff on it is not there either. For some reason the loud speaker on my Vairo 2 doesn't work so I cannot here it ring but it works with the headphones its as if it hasn't switched back from headphones mode.
So 2 phones which are not working properly. I was hoping to upgrade but looking on the T-mobile uk website today there is only the Vairo 4 and the compact 2. I would love the Touch pro or the Touch HD, but I might just ditch T-mobile and get an Iphone as everyone I know that has one is so impressed by the way they just seam to work. they do what you want straight out of the box and the app store is so easy to use.
So should I wait and upgrade to a new HTC phone via T-mobile or go for a new contract with 02 and the Iphone. I really liked my Vairo when they worked, love the keyboard.
oh and I am on a friends and Family deal with T-mobile as my Mum did some contracting for them in 2007 and got me the deal, so I guess I am not worth T-mobile holding onto if I threaten to go else where with my custom.
Any thoughts? is the iphone good enough or are the new models from HTC so much better and why?
I don't have £400 to buy somthink unlocked either.
cheers for your comments.

Boost the antenna strength...HOW?

I need help please. It's not my service! (TMobile) It's my TP2. The signal is w-e-a-k! I drop calls all the time in my house now. I never used to do that with my s710.
Please, someone...is there something I can change in my settings? can i download something? I need to make this signal stronger. I did not pay all this $$ to have all these dropped calls. Can I change the "radio" or something? I think I read something about that, but I am such a noob. Please, someone guide me!
Thanks
Not sure if this will help as I am in UK.
I have just switched provider and discovered I don't get signal at home so went to Settings, Communications, Phone, Advanced, Band and changed network type from Auto to Gsm.
Don't need the 3G, data connection or whatever as have pc at home and get reasonable signal with phone forced to gsm.
I appreciate the reply, but that will not work for me. I use the data connection daily.
Any other possibilities people? Please. I am so desperate.
Does anyone have a solution ? Would a hard reset help? I don't want to start from scratch.
have you tried switching back from 3G to 2G? because if you get a constant 2G signal then it pretty much sums up that 3G signal is weak in your area.
Thanks. I don't even have 3g in my area right now. So that factor is out of the picture.
Will unfortunately have to wait for HARDSPL and new radio stacks.
There are signal boosters that you can buy off the net, no idea how efficent they are though.
Cheers,
Beasty
lol, Beast, thats exactly what I was going to say, a new radio helps in many cases. At least it did when I had my Dash.
On other news, looks like T-Mo let us down again, at least US buyers. No details were posted on their site concerning the TP2, as I posted earlier that was supposed to happen today. At least not yet. Oh well, only 4 days 'til Wednesday!!!!!!
edit: And @ Beast, or anyone who knows. Does the TP2 have an external antenna port? I use a signal booster, but used to have the external antenna adapter plugged in to my Dash. My next door neighbor is getting the TP2 also but doesn't want to ditch out the $200-$300 for a signal booster. I am going to give him my old setup if the TP2 has an external antenna port.
Thanks for the replies guys. I will wait for the HARDSPL. I will also be asking someone to hold my hand at that time b/c I have never done that process before. I am new to all of this flashing this and that stuff, but willing to learn.
how in the world are all you people getting the Tp2 so early? i assume it is not from T-mobile.
Got mine through Mobile Phones Direct It's available from a number of sources, in fact, including - gasp shock horror - Amazon (link!)
I am having reception problems too. I have a TP2 and a mytouch mytouch gets 3 bars tp2 gets 1 and goes in and out of 3g.
Select tmobile employees got the tp2 about 5 weeks ago ...roughly 5 in each market
so this could be the start of many people's reception problems...i wonder what will be done about it on the HTC end? Tmobile end? SHould be interesting.

the USA T-mobile Touch pro2?
Ah, no, not that one, sorry, didn't cotton on to your being in the USA - sorry
As to radio reception, anyone else got GPS receive problems at the moment? I've compared reception between the TP2 and my old iPAQ hw6915, and for the first fortnight, the TP2 outperformed the 6915: Now its the other way around - massively - the TP2 cannot seem to hold a lock on GPS, rendering the entire system useless.
Any ideas?
GPS Hotfix
HTC have recently issued a Hotfix for the GPS on the TP2.
Head over to the HTC support site. May fix your problems.

They probably have the UK version, or Telus version, or....etc. I know the UK version will not work in the states. Well, nix that, it will work, but will not get T-Mob's 3G when and if we see 3G. (At least in my area, lol) You can only get the 2G.
On a side note, has anyone seen the T-Mobile version. I think it is ugly compared to the UK version. Da** T-Mobile, always changing things.

Ah, it is not so techy. Tecky? hmm, got to think on the word there. I guess what I am trying to say is it is not a very complicated process. I was very apprehensive to flash my first ROM, but the first went so well, I don't think I could have asked for more. Just follow the guides and it should go smoothly. I flashed many ROM's on my (now gone) Dash. Let me put it in perspective though. I now own (sad to say) a BlackBerry, and with that you have to go through many complicated steps. However, I am getting the TP2, and that is one of the reasons. Flashing ROM's on the HTC device is a lot easier. After the first you will become Old Hand at it.
You should wait for the HardSPL, though, I think that is why mine went so smooth the first time. These guys are geniuses. They will have a solution before long. Listen to them and keep updated. They are willing to help, which is more than I can say for Crackberry dot com. Ooops sorry for the reference there. But you get flamed there for knowing a whole lot of nothing. Here, however, they might flame you, but lead you in the right direction.
Good luck and welcome to the Rhodium/Touch Pro2
k, thanks folks

Errr, now I don't understand the original signal problem. If there are no 3G coverage then IMHO you'd better switch to 2G (GSM only). It will spare your battery too, I think

No data transfer on 3G

This may have been posted already, but having searched the forum I've not been able to find any answers to this...
I have a Desire on Orange and I've flashed it back to factory spec. Before doing this and afterwards, I'm finding that when the data status bar displays 3G, I cannot receive or send data. If I try browsing like this, it eventually switches over to HSPDA and I get good data transfer.
I know it's a 'feature' to swap onto HSPDA, but I reckon that if I have four bars of signal and it's displaying 3G, I should get some connectivity, no matter how slow.
Is anyone on Orange or any other network experiencing this? I tried phoning Orange, and they were next to useless, trying to tell me that there were 3G masts down in the area (and getting very confused when I asked them why I could get on the 3G network with no problems).
Hope this gets sorted out soon and it's not a problem with the handset!
You're not in the City of London by chance..?
The reason I ask, is that I'm on Orange, and I too have problems with 3G data transfer there - but like you, when the H appears it works just fine. Normally I just get the 3G with an 'up arrow' but nothing coming back down.
That problem only occurs where I work, and I'm not alone. At least 3 of my colleagues in the office with Orange iPhones have the same issue.
I spoke to Orange about this and they acknowledged that 2 of the transmitters in the area have known faults (one of which is ongoing since something like the 22nd March). Until they fix these, it's likely to continue to be problematic.
Interesting, because I'm in Bristol and they told me that two masts were down as well. Coincidence or lying about not having a clue?

I think in my case they were fairly genuine with their comments. The person I spoke to gave quite specific details about the faulty cells and when I spoke to my colleagues who'd also been having difficulties, they actually commented that that date in March was about when their iPhones started playing up.
Interestingly, one thing she suggested as a workaround was to shut the phone down and take the battery out for a minute or so. What she said was by doing this, the phone would 'forget' all the local cells and stop trying to connect to them when I powered it up again. The idea being that the phone would always give priority to cells that it knew of, ahead of any alternatives that may actually be working.
I'm not sure how true that is, but to be fair to her that does actually seem to work very well when I'm having problems - although I actually found simply shutting the phone down seemed to be just as effective.
I did however enjoy telling my colleagues with the iPhones that all they had to do was shut down their phones and take the battery out for a minute!
They said the exact same thing to me. Haven't tried it yet, but I will give it a go. Thanks!

Texts slow to come through on orange

Hello world,
I've had my desire about six or seven months. When I started my contract I was living at home and the phone would work as expected (i.e. texts and calls coming through perfectly and mobile internet working fine). Around summer I had some issues with texts taking a while to come through but it was maybe two or three a week so I just ignored it. Now I've come to university and I live in a city (if that makes any difference). Say, if I send receive fifty texts a day then at least fifteen or so will come through late (I can count if needs be - but, it's a lot). I have joined up to Orange's 'share' (the t-mobile thing) about three weeks ago but the problem occurred before that. This weekend it has been very bad. Last night I had full signal (or so it said) when my friend tried to ring and I got a missed call alert fifteen minutes after. This morning, I've only had 2 texts (well only two have come through - put it like that) and one was four hours and one was three.
I'm running LeeDroid 2.2d with the latest orange radio (unrooted, did the orange update, rooted again just so I had their official radio). Before unrooting I tried almost every radio I could and it seemed to make no difference. I was wondering if this is something to do with my phone? Is it my meddling or is it orange's fault? I'm getting rather annoyed as it makes it impossible to actually have a text conversation these days. I've just put my phone onto 2g (instead of dual mode) as I read somewhere it could be 3g congestion so we'll see how that gets on.
Has anyone experienced any similar issues or know of anything I can do it try make the situation better? Thank you very much, Rowan.
Desire on Orange unrooted here (2.2). I notice a similar problem although not quite to the same degree.
As it happens I work in a place with sketchy connection to both T-mobile and Orange. The connection is unreliable, although it lets me call all the time data & sms are iffy. Note that it's not the reception, it more like the data network is overloaded.
I suspect you might spend lots of time in a similarly bad location.
It's definitely a location issue for me!
Well I'm normally at my accomodation which isn't in the but I guess it still could be congested. Do you think the 'share' thing could have made it worse?
I used to be on orange and had had that problem for years until i switched to tmob wiv my desire, now the problems vanished

I joined the T-mobile thing as well and saw no difference. Sadly the phone doesn't switch over to 2G t-mobile if there is 3g available, congestion does not come into the decision to switch over

[Q] Drops calls, loses reception, works only after reboots

Hello guys. I have some major issues with my S3. In general it has very weak reception compared to my S1. I've had two providers KPN HI and Tele 2, the latter uses t-mobile's network. With both providers and several different sim cards I encounter the same problems. Not only is reception in general weaker than my S1, it also drops calls very frequently. Mind you, I live in central Amsterdam, where I've never had reception problems with any provider at all. Sometimes when signal drops it comes back after 10 to 20 seconds. Sometimes it's completely gone and I have to reboot the phone to get service again. On average, I have to reboot the phone 6 to 8 times a day. The phone is on stock rom, latest firmware.
My s3 has been to samsung repair two times. The first time they checked for software issues. After a week they told me they couldn't find anything wrong, but they updated to the latest firmware. The problems were still there. They then took my phone for 3 weeks. When I got it back they couldn't say if they found the problem, but the phone went through general inspection (?) so it should be fine. Wrong. Literally one hour after having back my phone I tried calling someone. I was standing outside, had 4 bars of reception, but got dropped out of the conversation after 3 seconds. The no service symbol was showing. I rebooted and tried to call again. This time it worked. After an hour I checked my phone and surely, the no service symbol was showing again.
I'm getting very tired of this. I have a 550 euro phone that doesn't make me do phone calls 2 out of 3 times. People calling me have complained that they get voicemail instantly. I called Samsung and they told me they couldn't do anything but take the phone in for repair again. The shop where I purchased the phone says the same thing. I have no choice but to send it to repair, which means that I will lose my phone for at least 3 weeks again.
If someone can offer me advice, please, I would appreciate it very much. I wish I didn't gave away my s1...
Edit: Should've posted this in the general s3 sub.
Ask them for expedited repair and shipping, Samsung does a pretty good job and helping out when you're nice and friendly with them.
Let them know the situation, tell them you don't want to cause any problems, but that this is the third time you've sent the phone, if they can kindly either do a more thorough review of the phone and figure out what's wrong with it and fix it or give you a different new/refurbished phone. Or something.
