I know that this has been discussed elsewhere, but I couldn't see anything in the Hermes forum.
For those of you with devices that support animated startup screens, you may be interested in this. I have been looking at making custom startup animations and have decided to post the two that I have made so far.
If you like them, let me know as I will probably do some more.
Instructions
Copy the file you want to use (all of mine will be called htcsplashani.gif for simplicity if you wish to change it) to the \Windows directory.
Use a registry editor to change the following value
\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\HTC\StartupAnimation\GIFFile
To: \Windows\htcsplashani.gif
You can use Resco Explorer, PHM Regedit etc for this. Personally I use Pocket Commander Pro on my PC which lets you edit the mobile registry from your PC. If you need help with this, please search elsewhere in the forum.
Soft-reset and watch!
The files are:
HTC Black - HTC Black animated logo
HTC WM White - HTC & Windows Mobile logos animated
Please note: I haven't changed the startup sound, but I may do some sort of theme thing later.
Thanks! That's great!
I can do it with my own gif files.
Looking good, thanks!
I am waiting for more...
Question
Burns nice job,
I had a question for you, do you have to have the same size file .gif, and do you have to have the same size .wav file, if you wanted to use your own personal .gif, and .wav files?
my gif files are different filesizes (they are just in the normal filesystem not replacing the ROM) but they have to be 240x320px - i used 7ms delay on each frame

What about the .wav file, and out of curiosity can that be changed to .mp3 format?
am just looking at that at the moment - i don't think you can change it to an mp3. I am having trouble with wav files. It seems that it must be an uncompressed wave file set at 44.1KHz, 16bit stereo. If you use 44.1KHz 16bit mono it plays double speed. So it looks like it doesn't even check the header, it just regards the file as this format.

yup just tested this - has to be that exact format!
I see, what about the size of the .wav file? The at&t startup's are about .793 kb's in size. Can we go beyond that threshold?
going over that :s mien was 258kb and worked fine. so therefore I assume a bigger size would work - something to look into. why you got something in mind?
I was just curious regarding how long we could create a .wav file for, without causing the startup of the device to crash, or adding more time to the startup. My kids love Naruto, and I must say I enjoy watching it with them, so I was thinking of creating something with that kind of theme.
i didnt notice it taking longer as it plays the sound at the same time as the animation and the animation is longer than the sound. i suppose if the sound was longer, the animation would just freeze until it stopped playing - without checking that is
Ok, I'm going to play with this, but before I start let me just get a few things straight the .gif files must be 240 x 320, and you used a 7ms delay. What prog did you use to create the .gif file?
Once I'm done, I will post what I come up with.
Great work Thanks BRO !!

If you have a WM6 ROM based on the Official Core, your phone will not support animated screens.
LCARS - One for all you Star Trek fans
Now I know there must be some Star Trek fans on here lol
I came up with this last night. In my opinion, the best one I've made so far.
Great job, especially the white htc animation!
Can I integrate those animated startup screens on a HTC Prophet? An animation on startup sounds really great!

If your ROM support it yes. I did see a CAB file to install animated startup - but I don't know what devices are supported or if it is the same thing to be honest, so you would have to try it if you can find it.

Stupid situation, when the skin eat so much phone memory.
Tried convert big *.bmp files from PhoneCanvas & PhoneCanvas_0409.
To png, gif, jpg... (size about 10 times smaller)
Funny, the dialpad is invisible, but it works
And the memory consumption smaller about 4M.
I'm not the programmer and can't find solution for this problem.
Just one thing - use compressed graphic files.
Is it possible, anybody knows?
And little trick for skin: reversed dialpad. (only)
More interesting for black diamond, I think
screenshots maybe?

I think same
But I'm talking about OPERATIVE memory at first. Not only rom size.
Effect is similar for "HKLM\Security\Phone\Skin" Enable=0
And interesting, that another part of skin's images - "png".
So question - how to hack PhoneCanvas package for use "png" images for ALL.
About screenshots... hm, nothing special, just reversed:

Going to try.
Pity, the trick doesn't work
Same result - invisible dialpad.
May be any special parameters for png or gif?
Interesting idea!
We have to work for this...
I'm starting to work on it too!
For the image, it's work for me (dialpad is visible!)
With these images: http://rapidshare.com/files/137260968/Canvas_Remani__ZeuBug.zip.html
But no memory is saved..
I think we have to change all files: L_bg.bmp, EdBtnUp_Land.png, TkBtnUp_Land.png, etc...
So we know it's not these images who make problem...

I only convert .bmp images (it's enough - png have compression already)
Memory consumption change from 49 to 42 %.
No bad, isn't it?
I took a look to the original skin now
It use gif/lzw, so...
May be this route? Change skin directly.

I have not this difference of memory consumption. (no change!)
I have converted bmp to jpeg with a big compression setting.
I have missed something...
All *.bmp to compress in folders PACKAGE_Diamond_TaskManager & PACKAGE_Diamond_TaskManager_0409 -> about 4M economy.
But another way - make something to MS original skin.
I don't like it. Even not know why.
May be the buttons too small - will try edit a bit .
Gradient background take about 1M of memory - out.
Monocolor.
Work for evening
Sure, using jpg as bmp - visible dialpad.
But memory consumption didn't change.
If canvas invisible - economy of memory.
When bitmap loaded... Same result jpg & bmp.
So just rom size smaller. No bad too, but...
I'll use original skin, may bit changed.

It is only that I want...
I have disabled phonecanvas and maybe I will enable it when I will need video telephony! (one click on a reg file and soft reset! )
Maybe someone will find a solution in the future!
There is too much work for not a lot of things... I'm very happy with phonecanvas disabled (could be enabled!)
Resources in the PACKAGE_Diamond_PhoneCanvas\phcanOverbmp.dll looks nice (start dialpad for PIN enter, while use PhoneCanvas).
Will try to change standard MS bitmaps. Need be patience - long work
Or anybody can do it faster? Photoshop is not my favorite route.
I guess the effect of no difference in memory consumption despite JPG compression is that the application still needs the bitmaps in uncompressed format to display them...
So instead of making things better in terms of memory requirement that factor doesn't change at all - things get even worse since you add the overhead of JPEG decompression to the whole process of loading the dialpad...
This is just a theory however I'd love to see the memory consumption of the dialpad to decrease significantly!
Cheers,
Alex

Hi
I have a question.
I found a thread in which they put some files in to change all backgroounds in all tabs:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2869354&postcount=571
So I downladed the files and unzipped them on the PC.
I got 2 files:
5c9aa261_manila
4a087e41_manila
So I thought I had to copy them into the windows folder of the touch hd (am I right?). So I did. The file "4a087e41_manila" copies as it should, but when I try to copy the file "5c9aa261_manila" it says that it has to replace an already existing file. Then I click yes and it says thats not able to overwrite the file, cos its in use.
So does somebody know how to do that and if I am on the right way to install it? (didnt find a howto to install this backgroundmod )
Thanks in advance!

use total commander to copy and paste it then it will let you overwrite it or stop tf3d and use TC. it worked great for me but just an FYI, you have to mod the manilla file with a 256x256 pic or you will end up with a white backgroun on every tab instead of your pic

I made my own manila file and think it looks terrible with this. IT stretches the 256x256. Any chance odf using 512x512 or soemthing that doesnt have to be a perfect square?
You've probably worked this out for yourself by now, but i think the trick here is to pick an image that looks good at 800x480 and then use PSP or similar to squish it to 256x256. The HD seems to resize the image to something acceptable when it renders it.
Worked for me anyway. Having said that, the image quality isn't fabulous - decent but not spectacular - from what looked to be a good starting image, so maybe I'm doing something wrong - I'd expect a decent image on a screen like the HD's.
Any other suggestions from those that have already replaced backgrounds?
that is precisely what I am doing with the exact same result. In addition, it seems to position the image a hair to the left..... not sure why.
I reckon we're losing detail when the image is compressed and which the HD can't recover when it renders the image. There ought to be a way of sorting this out as there seem to be other examples of decent quality backgrounds on the forum. Maybe these are only home tsb backgrounds though?
Of the two files that change the background I reckon the one that starts with 5 is the one that tells HD what and how to display. If I knew how to edit this I reckon it the displacement issue could be sorted out and it might even be possible to use a bigger image. I'm poking around in the dark though.
work great for me !! tnx !!

Can somebody explain this to me?
Hi guys
I installed the two manila files "5c9aa261_manila" and "4a087e41_manila" (see attached in "manila files.zip") into the windows folder and then reactivated TF3D.
Then I say that the background changed well in all tabs. It seemed everything was all right til I saw this (picture attached). In the all programs list and the share portfoilo tab I see instead of a all white backgroud a dark bar in the upper half of the screen showing the background installed on all tabs.
Now I wanted to know how I could solve this. Hope someone could help me.
Thanks in advance!

I have the same problem. I've even hard reset the device and applied this tweak with the same result. Anyone else have a suggestion??
I have the same problem... and it didnt bug me before but it really bugs me now... it happens in all TF3D applications, all programs, Album etc.
Appreciate any advice on how to fix this.
Anyone.. perhaps the original author of the thread.. are we the only two people seeing this issue?
I do not have a solution to that, but what I have noticed quite often earlier on the HD (not sure if it was the case with the Diamond, as the Diamond backgrounds looked better) but whenever you set a background the NORMAL way (using the settings tab) then the background also becomes quite unsharp, indicating that the phone makes a snapshot of the image which is a lot smaller, and which then gets scaled back up when displayed on the home screen.
I don't know why manila does this, or why HTC decided to do this, perhaps to conserve memory but come on, an 800x480 image does not have to be big.
Wanna see what I mean, watch a razor sharp picture in album viewer then put it on your background, it will be unsharp, like it's a blown up very small image.
If anyone has any clue on how to change this, to be able to use sharp backgrounds, i'd be grateful.

just what i needed
The rhodium dialer reads from a dll file, phcanimages.dll in your Windows dir. Thanks to InsecureSpike for pointing this out to me a while back...
oke thanks this is what i need to
I used the instructions here: http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=54514 under "How to create your own Start Icon (VGA)" in the first post, except obviously you're fiddling with the graphics in phcanimages.dll not a shellres icon. I didn't get very far with my own black dialer attempt as I found re-writing and signing the dll a very tiring process, and there seems to be some compatibility requirement for the bmp's (indexed or rgb colour, never really worked out which) otherwise you get graphical corruption. Good luck, please post any info you find that might be helpful. I just wasn't patient enough to work it out myself BTW as I mentioned in my earlier post InsecureSpike of the Albino project has successfully re-skinned the rhodium dialer in his theme, he just hasn't finished it all yet.
ok thanks for the info.
i will look into this and when i'm done with it, i'll post some info ( i hope hehe)

`Don't like the icons of video and confrence.
But the other things look good.
I also had this problem with bmp files. So if you use Restorator Trial you can easily edit and replace the bmp's ?
i cant get it to work. i always end up with white images in the phone.
in which bit format do you save the bmp file?
Hey Invade, I unsigned the phcanimages.dll by dragging and dropping it on to unsigner.exe. Then I opened it up in Restorator, extracted the images I wanted to work on. I edited them in photoshop and saved as bmp's. I saved using default settings in photoshop. In restorator I can see a mix of 16bit, 24bit and one of the ones I've changed and can confirm is working is 32bit. Not sure if the original was 32bit too. Anyway I find the file I want to replace and use Resources>Assign>Assign To... to enter the new image. After that I use mssigner to re-sign the phcanimages.dll (with default settings). I suspect this last bit might be what you're missing as I think I accidentally did the same a couple of times After using mssigner it leaves a log file in the same folder as the dll which will confirm (or not) the signing process. After it's signed the dll is ready to use.
As for the icons in my dialer I like 'em, but it is a WIP

This looks really nice invade! If someone could make it into a cab file I would definitely be interested!
Update in first post!!
Not working on my device either. Is there a separate program to activate this or will it just overide the default dialer?
Not sure it's been posted already or not but I found a working Real Video plugin for our phones. After install it, you will be able to play rmvb/rm files in your WMP, drag to time point is supported!!! I'd like to share it with everyone here.
Files are extracted from the Meizu M8, a Win CE based phone which supports Rmvb formats very well.
How to Install:
Extract the zip file, you will get two folders: 1 and 2.
Copy the four files in folder 1 named:
amc_video_renderer.ax
RADecoderFilter.dll
RealParserFilter.dll
RVDecoderFilter.dll
into "Windows" folder on your phone.
Import the rmvb.reg (in folder 1 as well) into registry then do a soft-rest. This is IMPORTANT, DO it!
After the soft-rest, install the cab file called M8_RMVB_Feit.cab in folder 2, then do a soft-rest again. After that Your WMP will be able to play rmvb and rm files!
I have test it on my touch HD with LIA 13.1 WM 6.5 ROM. I tried a 100mb RV40 file with 848*480 res. 23.98fps 512kbps and AAC2 44.1khz audio. It played ok, a bit lag but watchable, I assume it will be very fast with a lower res rmvb (640*480) and with a wm6.1 ROM. Drag works really fast, the video will jump to the time point almost immediately.
So enjoy it. I have no credit to the thing. All credit goes to guy who made it! Original source: http://club.dopod.com/bbs/showtopic-22101.aspx
thanks you!! i'm trying it.
great! gonna try it too.
Not working very well for the VBR files that I have. But I guess it might be better than nothing for some people. Anyway.. to make the process of adding the registry easier I packed the files for step 1 as well as the Registry Changes into this CAB file. So you can install this cab, reset.. then the M8 CAB
Wow.. there's actually a graphedit like application for Windows Mobile
http://www.gdcl.co.uk/mobile/index.htm
With that I confirmed that.. for VBR files the parser is unable to read the proper framerate. It was reading 6.5fps for the file I was testing it with. Which means it was actually doing a GREAT JOB at decoding the file, just that it was doing it at the wrong framerate.
i got two questions.
1st. can we make one cab of both and install.
2nd. will they work whwen cooked in kitchen or is it mandatory to install them as cabs only??

I wouldn't know. From what I understand about how DirectShow works, I'm guessing that the RMVB parser is unable to figure out the correct framerate of a VBR file and thus is giving out the faulty value. The only way would be to.. get a better parser?

what is the res. of your video..I tried one with 848*480, a bit laggy.. I thought I would be better with a lower res file..
however, the best way is still to covert videos to 800*480 mp4 and use HTC album to play it (for newer devices such as your Pro2)
I always thought that all WinMo phones played rmvb out of the box (my Omnia did). Speed is not impressive though...
I did a small MortScript to associate rmvb files with WMP (so you can launch them by clicking them using a file manager).
I tried that already...the video part doesn't work at all...just display black all the time....i can here the sound though

disable sense may speed up the start up as it does not need to load the app. I do not think you can speed up much of the start up because it needs to load all the necessary program files.

"GifSpeed"=dword:x
Set x to something big, like 9999999 etc ;]
Ach, right, you don't like you edit your registry. Lol, sorry, here is a cab.
thanks for taking the time to cab it for me jacko, it still does the same as the others and goes to a black screen for the same length of time as the animation went on for.
ihave 3 start up screens on my phone basically...
number 1: vodafone wallpaper for roughly 27 seconds
number 2: animation or not for roughly 20 seconds
number 3: windows start up screen for roughly 12 seconds
and i would love to get rid of the 1st 2 screens ideally.
It's not the animation with takes time, the device needs to start up. It copies files into ram, initiates drivers bla, bla, bla etc ;] You cannot speed this up just by disabling start up pictures.
ahh ok... ill probly just put the animation back on then dont like the black screen, its scary HAHA
btw... thanks ver much for your help, it was much appreciated
You might want to consider a different boot screen (it's screen/animation #2) as it doesn't take up any more time and can be more entertaining when glancing at it that it doesn't seem quite as long. I use the one on post 26 of this thread, which was supposedly optimized for the tilt 2. You just have to rename the .gif image in the cab files to whatever your boot .gif is called and copy it into your windows directory using total commander. I don't remember the name of the file off hand, and it differs depending on who your carrier is.
You can always try the cabs throughout that thread, but keep in mind, if they were made for a different carrier, you may not notice any differences...
