weak bluetooth and backup - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

Hi people, before I had 2020 and used it with the Samsung BT headphone...
BT signal was not particulary strong but it was strong enough to provide possibility of using the BT headset when the 2020 is in the pocket of the jacket.
Now I have 9090 and the same headphone and BT is much weaker, when the 9090 is in the upper pocket of the jacket on the opposite side than the headset, headset losing the connection...
Theres no way to keep the phone in the backpack of my bicycle and talk, theres less than a meter of distance...
Cant use it from the belt holder...
If I want to talk while driving a car I have to put 9090 on the co drivers seat.
I guess that that is hardware problem but will the upgrade to wm5 (its 2003 now) eventually do anything better ?
Beside that question - can I backup my 2003 ROM (and radio stack) in the phone somehow coz I indent to upgrade to WM5 or WM6 and would like to have backup so I can put previous version back (coz this version work very nice) if I expirience problems with newer OS.
Thank you guys (and girls if any) !

1. BA is known to have very weak BT (and WiFi is not the best neither). You have to live woth this. Some people reported that changing rom (or BT stack in case of ppc2003 and WM5 Helmi 1.3.2) helps a bit, but I haven't noticed.
2. Check on the list of availbale shipped ROMs on Wiki - there should be your ROM there. If you find one, request it, I have backup of whole XDA FTP with those ROMs. If not - there was a procedure of dumping the ROM, but I'm not sure you can use it directly, or you have to do some work on this. You cannot dump RadioROM.

Thank you Jakub, shame for weak BT, why did they make it if you cant use it if the hand is between the BA and headset...
Luckily I still have my classic headset, cables here I come :S
I also made the backup of whole XDA FTP roms when I had 1010 and flashed it occasionally but I tought that there are difference between the roms for my previous 1010 and 9090 for eg.... Am I wrong ? Is the 2003 = 2003 always no matter of the pocketpc model ? I know that that is a an most stupid question on the world but Im just worried about burning down the pocket pc with some (eventually) inadequate version. For eg. when Helmi make WM5 and we use it on 9090 can we install the same version on 2020 too ? Perhaps Im worry too much about that, probably windows is always windows and maybe radiostacks are different for different models, maybe they are same too.... Just dont want to risk...
Best regards and thank you !

1. If you use ROM that is designed to for specific device, there is very low risk of any failure, if you follow the procedure and flashing won't be stopped by some external problem (hanging computer, power loss, disconnections etc.)
2. ROMs are not interchangable between different devices - if you try to flash BA with (for example) Hermes ROM, you will risk bricking your device. Rom you are going to flash MUST BE FOR BLUEANGEL, and not for any other device. this is not installing software like on a computer, but more likely like exchanging firmware in a cell phone or BIOS on motherboard. One false move and you can convert the device into paper holder
3. Before doing anything try to understand what are you doing and what is this for (the best idea is to read Wiki once, if not clear - multiple times, if you still miss some information, use search on forum, you will find all the information you need). It is very unlikely, that you have a question nobody ever asked (especially in case od such old device as BlueAngel).
Good luck!

You definitely bring some light into my understanding of the PPC world, thank you for your time and advices
Best regards !

Solution? low voice level issue

Hi,
has anyone found a fix or an app or something to the low voice level issue during phone calls? we already know that a BT headset is a "workaround" but i was really hoping for a solution for the devide itself...
thanks in advance.
Press and hold the answer call button to enable the speakerphone. Should get your volume up to more than you need.
I hear ya about the voice problem. TERRIBLE.. Read my latest thread about the so many faults I found on the PDA2K..
'Blue Angel'.. LOL... I Would call it Dark Angel.
Try to replace the device
You should try to replace (change) the MDA III. Newer models does'nt have this issue. After 7 weeks of trying (...and crying), i've decided to bring the MDA III back to the T-Mobile Shop and asked for a replacement. 2 days later, i've got a new MDA III, now without any issues.
No Solution???
Thanks for your replies so far.
What i can´t understand is, why can´t we do something about it, a fix or a setting or an app... since it´s not an hardware problem ( the voice level when recording a video for instance is quite acceptable ((...well AVI not MP4...). After all, this is a developers forum! is it impossible to fix that issue?
I Think this is a very important feature for the Phone usability of the blue angel! must the 1000´s of units already sold be returned and exchanged?
ps - thanks 1234 but the voice level i´m talking about is from my own voice (the mic) and not the loudspeaker! other people when i´m in a phone conversation always say that i seem to be very far away and they hear me very low...!
This problem seems to be caused by the placement of the mic in a tiny hole next to the reset hole. Everyone complains that you sound faint when you're talking. If you try talking 'directly' into the hole or even hold the phone in your left hand things seem to improve ( closer to your voice-box? ) . You can also see this problem when making a movie with the phone. It sounds very quiet when compared to the same test with an XDA II. The XDA II had a mic in a much better position, next to the direction pad.
I think, it's a hardware issue
As i know, it's a hardware issue with the mic.
The position of the mic is bad, that's true, but some Shops will replace the MDA III against never models with some changes.
A Sales rep in a T-Mobile Shop told me, that devices with the voice issue WILL BE REPAIRED (mic change or something like this).
So, it may be a good idea to replace the device against a never model.
It's strange,
for me there are problems with cable headset.
If it's a problem with the phone mic, why I had the same problem, but only sometimes, with the headset ?
I will try also another headset.

Audio level - intolerable
Hello All,
I'm new to this forum but am a very frustrated PDA2K owner.
I cannot tolerate the issue of people complaining that my voice is too low during phone calls. The device has cost me an arm and a leg.
I bought it thinking it was the best PDA/Phone on the planet. The issue is there is no IMate service center in Egypt. I had it sent to me from Dubai...
If a software solution exists, then I would be very greatful for it.
PS. koponet says that he/she replaced their device. Has the microphone location been changed? Or is it still in the same spot?
Position is still the same
The mic position is still the same after the replacement , but the voice level is much better.
Before the replacement, the voice level was bad using the MDA III WITH or WITHOUT the cable headset (thats included).
After the replacement, the voice level is still bad using the MDA III WITH the cable headset (thats included), but much better WITHOUT this headset.
CALLING all Developers
I Think this is beacoming THE brain test for all the developer community out there...
If someone could come up with a software solution for this issue i´ll bet there would be several 1000´s of users ( all of QTEK, XDA, I-mate owners worldwide) thanking and respecting the "ONE"...
thanks,
Vega.
I would be happy if somebody could for sure tell whether this is a hardware issue or not.
For me, it can't be a hardware issue. Recording with the same mic and phone calls with Skype work well. Why should the same mic not work for GSM voice ???
A
I've contacted the italian distributor of Qtek 9090 about this issue.
They told me that they will release a patch in the next few days !!!
However, IMHO, it's a software issue, not hardware one because:
- the same mic with non-GSM apps works well
- With the mic in the cable headset you will experience the same problem.
bye
Manuel
fixed with new ROM
I've installed the new ROM with radio version 1.06.02
I've made a few calls and the mic problem seems over!!!!
However I'll made some other calls to see if it's really solved.
bye
Manuel
Manuel, can you send me the upgrade for radio?
thanks
[email protected]
You could always take the pointed end from a sharp x-acto knife and cafefully 'drill' out the mic hole making it bigger. Drastic? Yes. Does it help? Yup.
Please post the Radio ROM which fixes this issue!
Rom update from qtek seems to fix it
The rom update from this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=14362
seemed to fix my mic level issues. It came with the 1.06 radio version.
Thanks...hope it helps you
sound issue - quiet microphone
I still have this issue, even after upgrading to the latest ROM version (iMate 1.40.176)
Everyone I speak to says I sound distant or quiet, and plugging the standard wired handsfree doesnt seem to help at all. I spend all my time shouting into the phone to be heard!
Has anyone found a solution? should I upgrade the Radio ROM as well?
I have an XDAiis.
If you're using imate 1.40.176, then you should have radio 1.12 which is only one release back from the latest, so upgrading radio to 1.13 won't make a difference. I have an O2 XDA2s with radio 1.13 & sound level is fine, but it was also fine when using radio 1.06 (as shipped with phone)
Sounds like you have a hardware problem

Anyone had problems with uprading/downgrading XDA2?

Well I thought I would relay MY experience today.
I'm selling my XDA2 after upgrading to the 2i but as it was on WM2003SE I thought it best to downgrade it to 1.72 - afterall this CAN be done and would make sense to give it someone else with the latest o2 update rather than custom ones.
I put the XDA2 in its cradle, checked country id issues and then proceeded with the upgrade. BANG....USB v1.01 screen comes up and it didn't shift for 6 HOURS!!! Nothing I did made any difference, until I came across someone's comment (not on here) saying the only thing they tried once they'd rebooted into bootloader mode was to do it on another PC. I'd initially tried to put WM2003SE on my own PC and had a very similar issue to this one, but when I tried at work it upgraded immediately. Luckily I had a spare laptop hanging around and thought s*d it, it can't do any harm!
IT WORKS!!! I don't know why it's blocked on my PC, and what's caused it...but the laptop worked first time. I would ask anyone in the future having these kinds of problems with the bootloader screen and the PC not updating / downgrading to try it on ANOTHER PC!!! Obviously I can't say for sure, but for me it's 2 / 2!
Cheers

Siemens SX66 has built-in camera behind its case, rumor?

I heard that Siemens SX66 sold by Cingluar has built-in camera but it is covered by the case. Is that true or not?
Please if you know, advice me. I am willing to open my Siemens SX66 and make small hole for the camera.
Sounds like BS to me. If they got a custom case from HTC that covers that area, you can be damned sure they can get the cameras custom ripped out .
want your answer? load the 1.40 rom and use the camera apps, it locks up the device on my SX66
Sherko
I have internal memos that show there is a secret camera inside the case of the Cingular SX66. It is squeezed in right next to the iraqi weapons of mass destruction!

Hidden camera??!!!
It just would not make good money sense for any of the cell carriers to leave the camera attached to the motherboard and cover them up with a fully covered back shell. I would assumed that maybe the carriers could order their very own Blue Angel hardware from HTC without the some of the bells and whistles for their custom branding, UNLESS.....HTC did make them all of the BA hardware one set way and left it up to the carriers to use all or some of the functions. Some of the U.S.A. cell carriers were already worried about marketing a high dollar device to corperate consumers. In order to scale down the high price, they shaved off the wifi or the bluetooth. But their main concern for leaving out the camera was a matter of the big corperate buyers who work for strict employers with the "No camera" and (camera phone) policy. Which is why I'm glad I got a MDA III from overseas. ..... Who knows? it was probably cheaper to mold a new different back shell than to pay someone to remove the camera. To all the ones who might have a camera, I hope you get them working Good luck with "hidden surprise inside".

On the WIKI there are the camera patches. But you won't know if there is a camera working until the lens is uncovered from the plastic backing.
There is also the possibiltiy of making some registy changes?? Where is MDAIIIuser ?? He would know. :?:
Looks Like I have been forced to make a comment here.
The issue is whether the device has a camera built in and if this is the case how can XDA-Developers get it to work.
First, I personally think that this will be a conceptual discussion for based on my own experience taking the BA apart which is a pain, I don’t think that many or even anybody is going to spend the time drilling a hole in the their BA in order to get a ****ty VGA camera to work. However as I don’t have that problem it is really not fair to make that statement.
So let’s brake this done into a few logical steps where I will try to add what I have learnt over the last 4 months.
1) Hardware
We have yet to see a picture of the back plate of an opened BA with camera and a SX66 without, so visually at least we don’t know what we are talking about.
For the fun of it let us say that there is camera inside.
That its been covered over with a different back casing in order to open up the market of the BA to Business users that don’t want to have (due to security) a phone with a built in camera and/or also don’t want to spend the extra money.
This I feel is a valid point and HTC choice would be to build a different device (different plate without a camera) or just ship the same plate with a camera or even leave certain components out of that plate (the lens) in the manufacturing process.
Here again, thinking positive, let’s say that it’s all there and they just covered it over with a different back case.
So we have the problem of the back casing and the maybe the fact that the camera button is missing on the left side of the device. (this you will have to tell me).
Anyway the solution to this is to obtain a display model of BA with camera, a task that I have tried in vain to achieve over the last 3 weeks as my BA is very badly dented.
Here again, thinking positive, let’s say we can get a display model and swap the casing out.
Thus you have the insides of the SX66 which has the hardware (well we think it does) and the casing that will support a camera.
2) Software
What do we know about rom’s ?
Many months ago there was a SX66 1.3x rom (device with out camera) that was repacked by Manich and put on XDA.
This was a rom dump and the camera application was not in that image.
This rom was loaded be owners of the BA with camera and it worked but did not have the camera application.
(well it was a buggy Rom and in the long run and most went back to the I-mate 1.31 Arabic)
However on Wiki we placed a post install cab that added the needed files for the camera and these worked for that 1.3x Rom that is.
So we know for a fact that it can be done and we have proved it based on the past.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_Post
However Today we all taking about the 1.40 Type I Rom’s (I-mate or Qtec) which are built and shipped for the model PH20B (with camera).
I have loaded this rom and I find the camera application (Camera.exe) and many other files with camera in them under \windows
If you have loaded this rom and don’t find the Camera.exe then this must be due to the BaUpgradeUt.exe which checks to see what the Model number is and thus does not load all the files (in this case the Camera and in the case of the Harrier rom the WIFI).
This could also explain the file \Windows\Startup\Camera_Detect.exe which is found on my device (which has a camera) and may not be found on yours.
What we have also been able to work out is by using the MaUpgradeUt_noID we can bypass the Country Code error in the Type II roms, Seen in this thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=117645#117645
Files and instructions :
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_FAQ_Upgrade_Errors
However we have not been able to test if we can by pass the device ID check (the one that checks if your device has a camera and thus loads those files).
The new tool that I have been Beta testing gives me the possibility to change the header of the rom to read that it is a non camera version.
However we have no tools that lets us tell the device that it is in fact a PH20B (With camera) and not a PH20B1 (without).
This would be the reverse of getdevciedata and a really interesting tool.
(putdevicedata.exe > devicedata.txt or write the device data out of my devicedata.txt onto my device thus getting the device to think it is a different device vs getting the rom to think it was built for a different device).
So MAYBE, just maybe flashing a non camera BA with the device ID PH20B by using the MA_upgrade will result in the device thinking that it has a camera and wifi and we could then test if this components are around (as in part of the hardware) or not by using them since the software has been loaded (you can find the files in windows).
So How do we move forward from here?
1) I think we need to see the backplate of both devices
2) We need to flash a non camera device with the MA_upgrade as a PH20B and see if we can find the files
3) We need to play with the wifi and the camera of a device (that was PH20B1 but has been told its a PH20B) which has the back plate removed and the 1.40 as a rom on it
Given this we can prove or disprove the theory and who knows you might even find that wifi is around but the camera not.
Warning taking you device apart can revoke the warranty
Warning flashing your device has been know to turn it into a brick, do this at your own risk.
Hope that helps

Thank you MDAIIIuser for your deep insight on our BA's . You really did point out some pros and cons on the camera or no camera issue. I will have to ask around some of my celluar dealer buddies in my area to see if I can score you a dummy BA for you to use for shell parts. You are the BA guru!
shane, Nice of you but won't do me much good, I have a camera (PH20B) and your dummy won't or am I missing something?
So looks like you will have to score the dummy and answer the the question of the "meaning of life" which I always thought was 21 but seems to be "is there a camera or not and if so can XDA get it to work?"
Why don't you just install the .cab with the camera app on a siemens and check if you get a black image?
good idea! where can i get it? ill install it

Anyways nothing should be tried until we open the back of the phone. I tried but my tools only opened 2 screws. the others lost its corners from trying to hard.
Thank you all
I really appreciate your interaction and specially XDAiiiuser.
the humor part was healthy too
I will try to open my BA and check if there is a cam or take a pic and find out.
If anyone has discovered that there is a camera in siemens XS66, then, we might be able to use it. I understand it might be difficult..

Quality of Blue Angel Bluetooth Audio - Definitive Answer?

Hi all,
I bought my SX66 from Cingular two weeks ago and so far I LOVE IT. Bluetooth, WIFI, PDA, phone, and a QWERTY keyboard all in one slick package.
However, as you all know, the bluetooth audio has MAJOR issues. I have upgraded my radio to 1.13.00 and my bluetooth stack to 3900. The volume level of my bluetooth headset has improved, but one thing remains - the HORRIBLE snap, crackle and pop (noticeable on both ends of the phone call).
Because the radio ROM and bluetooth stack updates have not helped, I am beginning to fear that the problem is a hardware design flaw. However, I'm hoping that some bluetooth headsets may compensate for this better than others.
I have read through all the forums but have yet to come accross a consensus for the best bluetooth headset (the one that has the least crackle and pop interference).
So here's the question - has ANYONE used a bluetooth headset with the Blue Angel that does NOT suffer from the audio problems described above? I would love to settle this once and for all.
I hate to have to spend money on a new bluetooth headset when my Motorola HS820 has worked fine in the past with other phones. However, it would be even more of a shame to turn my SX66 into a glorified $500 PDA and go back to using my Motorola V600 for phone calls.
Thanks in advance for any advice. Also - I am a new member of the XDA Developers forums and I want to say that they have been INVALUABLE to me. The SX66 users manual from Siemens is nothing more than an overview of the Pocket PC 2003 OS. These forums (and the wiki pages) tell me how the SX66 REALLY works.
Cheers,
Warwick
Bad news. I tried with 4 diferents blouthoot head set with the same problems (including the new jabra BT800). I use a cable headset and if I need my hands free I use my Sony Ericson phone.
So from now their is no good option to solve this problem.
FYI - I sent the following e-mail to Siemens customer support, just to see what they'd say:
"I recently bought an SX66 Pocket PC Phone from Cingular.
Everything works great, with one exception - the audio quality on my
bluetooth headset is TERRIBLE. Specifically, there is non-stap crackling
and popping. According to a web site devoted to SX66-like devices
(www.xda-developers.com) there is no known fix for this issue, and it is
a problem with the bluetooth antenna itself. Is this true? If so, the
product is defective and I will be returning it to Cingular for a full
refund. While it is a great device, it is useless to me if I can't use a
wireless headset to talk on the phone. P.S. I have already installed the
latest driver updates on the Siemens Web site."
Their response:
"Dear Mr. Webb,
Thank you for contacting Siemens Customer Care. I would like to thank you
for your trust and support by inquiring about the SX66. I will be glad to
assist you.
I understand that you are having problems with static while using a
Bluetooth headset.
Please understand that there are no settings on the phone that will improve
the function on the Bluetooth on the phone. It either works or it doesn't.
I would recommend trying to pair up another headset to see if the problem is
with the headset or the phone. If another headset gives you the same
problem the phone may be defective. Before taking it in for repair, you
will want to first try a hard reset on the phone. A full device reset
clears memory, deletes all data and restores the SX66 to its default
settings. Programs installed at the factory remain, erasing all data that
you have created and programs you have installed. To full reset the SX66,
press and hold the power button, and then use the stylus to press the soft
reset button at the same time.
**NOTE** Be sure you have backed up all your data in a SD card or on your PC
before performing a full reset!
If this does not resolve your issue and your phone is less than a year old,
then it can be repaired by Cingular. Please take your SX66 to your local
Cingular store for a warranty exchange or repair.
I hope this has brought resolution to your issue and that I was able to be
of assistance. Your case number is XXXXX. If you need further assistance,
please reply to this e-mail. If you reply, please ensure that your reply
contains a copy of this e-mail.
You can visit us on the web at http://www.siemens-wireless.com. We also have
our Customer Care Hotline available Monday through Saturday from 8AM until
7PM Central Time at 888-777-0211.
Thank you for choosing Siemens; have a nice day.
Sincerely,
Siemens Customer Support

It either works or it doesn't. GREEEEAAAAAT.
My HS810 set has worked great with limitations. The phone has to be in close proximity to the headset. I have static issues when I have the phone hooked to my belt and am walking briskly. But as far as using the headset in my car with the phone sitting on the passenger seat it is great. I bought a secong set of HS810's and had the same good results.
HBH-300
I'm using the HBH-300 with very little static. The headset has noise-cancellation features which seems to help a lot... according to the folks on the other end of the conversation. Like the previous poster, the SX66 has to be in line of sight to the headset, otherwise I experience static. So for instance, if I carry the PDA in my left hand w/ headset in right ear, I need to make sure my body doesn't block the "line of sight". When the SX66 is on the desk, I have no problems, again as long as I don't block the line of sight.
Shouldn't be this way, but it solves most my problems.... I'm using Radio 1.13 and still 1.40.

Buying a Blue Angel today?

Hi, my sister needs a low cost new phone and i've found, on eBay, some Qtek 9090 at 144€.
I know, it's a quite old device, but, viewing the tecnical sheet, it doesn't seems to be so bad... In fact, i'm asking you users, would you buy a Blue Angel today?
Of course i'd upgrade its ROM, it's dangerous?
Now i've got an HTC Diamond, is it really different beethween ARM and Xscale? Does it cause any compatibility issue?
And, important thing, is it strong? She's not very "soft" with phones
i would definetely buy one again, but not for 150eur! 30-60 maybe. on ebay, for 150 you'd get a touch pro or touch diamond in mint condition.
upgrading the rom is not dangerous. many people messed up their phones during upgrading, but there is always a pretty easy way to restore it. no mistake is fatal.

I couldn't find one for lower prices that meets my payments requests...
But this is not a problem
I've seen that flasing is a bit tricky compared to flashing the HTC Diamond, where you can just download the ROM and, if it's for Diamond, you can flash it without problem...
Here there are some IDs to edit before flashing, right?
no, i find the blueangel to be the easiest device to flash, no CID locking, no need for SPL changing... just bootloader, flashing, hard reset, and that is the same procedure for any device, just that the BA does not need to be unlocked before, just the extrom resize, which is not mandatory.

Uh Really?
What about this? It's useless right now? :O
the RUU checks for deviceID and countryID and other IDs, but by using a custom RUU and putting the device into bootloader mode before connecting to the pc, all those id checks are bypassed.
on the wiki page in your link, the topic is finding the correct STOCK rom for your device. but nobody uses stock roms with wm2003se anymore. all the roms offered on this forum work for all blueangel models, no matter if it's a t-mo mda iii or spv m2000 or siemens sx66 or whatever. the only device, that cannot be flashed with blueangel roms, is the harrier, the cdma version of the phone. but since there is no cdma network in europe, there is no chance of getting a harrier, plus, you would recognize a harrier immediately, because it has no sim card slot, because on cdma, that is not needed.
btw the best thing about the blueangel is the community i have a Blueangel, a Universal and a Touch HD and while the other 2 devices' hardware is way superior, their respective sections here on the forum are by far not as good as the blueangel's.

on the wiki page in your link, the topic is finding the correct STOCK rom for your device. but nobody uses stock roms with wm2003se anymore. all the roms offered on this forum work for all blueangel models, no matter if it's a t-mo mda iii or spv m2000 or siemens sx66 or whatever. the only device, that cannot be flashed with blueangel roms, is the harrier, the cdma version of the phone. but since there is no cdma network in europe, there is no chance of getting a harrier, plus, you would recognize a harrier immediately, because it has no sim card slot, because on cdma, that is not needed.
btw the best thing about the blueangel is the community i have a Blueangel, a Universal and a Touch HD and while the other 2 devices' hardware is way superior, their respective sections here on the forum are by far not as good as the blueangel's.

I'll sell you mine for 100e with postage fees included. Seriously, just need to fix this sim card bug, and if you want it, we can do business.

BA is slow ??? LOL not really it is faster as a Kaiser for example
I should get it today
The 400Mhz CPU is (by frequence) faster than my old Elfin (200Mhz) but it's an XScale based device, so i don't think i can directly compare them... What are the differences beethween XScale and ARM?
I have.. .. alot of devices. I like the blueangel. It's alot better than the newer phones, faster. I'd use a blueangel over any of the newer phones. Hermes was the last good phone put out by HTC.

Just a question: is normal that the slider is a bit "strong"? In fact, on mine, it doesn't open itself when i press it up (i am used to the new Nokia's sliders )
However i'd take it, but also my sister likes it
