I know people always ask to go through the threads and titles to find an answer, but the truth is I only find bits here and bits there, and not sure what to do!
I wish someone could explain what are the steps to take to move from Wm5 to Wm6 (I like the Black version) on T-Mobile Vario II, with as little probs as possible.
What programs to download and where from? Which order to install them?
Also: are all Wm6 versions available 'pirates'? Why cant you download Wm6 straight from Microsoft (I havent found any links yet!)
A huge thanks!!!
Step by step?
I agree with the above! Any step by step instructions for beginners?
I concur. It's a minefield out there. Lots of advice but a lot of it contradictive and the occaisonal mention of the "B" word just to convince you to put it off again for another couple of months.
It's been a lot more than that now for me but the need to sort out my HTC S100 Bluetooth headset means I have to.
I'm going to take the plunge. I'll let you know what happens.
T-Mob UK MDA Vario II (HTC Hermes) WM5hit
MrVanx's site has a nice set of guides on it.
I went here,
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_UpgradeForBeginners
I did the HardSPL part but I'm not sure if I needed to as the ROM I used seemed to do the same thing, but it didn't seem to hurt.
I then went here and downloaded the Schap's 3.60a ROM from mirror 1
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=all_hermes_roms
and ran it....
Forgot to back up my MMS's so lost them but apart from that... dare I say it......
The main reason for me doing this was to get a half decent sound on my HTC S100 Bluetooth handsfree jobby. It's done the trick, not perfect but it's so much better.
Hope that helps someone else and thanks to all involved in the sources I used.
DGL.
I decided to take the plunge today mainly to take advantage of the new internet sharing via wifi hack available on WM6. Like you guys I was nervous about messing up my phone and there is so much information available and so many choices. I decided to follow MrVanx's guide, very simple and spent about 2 hours doing to whole upgrade for hard spl, radio upgrade and windows black satin. It really is very easy if you follow that guide step by step. Definately worth it and had I known how simple it would be would have upgraded my vario II ages ago. If like me your on t-mobile then the cab on this thread might also be handy:

hi all, this is my first question on this site. This site is incredible for the wealth of info put forward by its member, credit to all you guys.i have flashed with a couple of the roms on my universal mainly tmobile and o2 and imate, but i desperately want to try the orange rom, does anyone know where i can download this from.thank you in advance.also praise due to buzz, what a techie,gr8 stuff.THANX
thats brilliant, i wouldn't have the guts to do that, just a few questions
1.Which ROM have you found the best out of the box? (from the 1st turn on)(added applications etc)
2.say you are on O2, were you able to still make calls/txt/mms on the other roms, (changing the settings etc maybe)
I have an Orange M5000 that im using as a bluetooth modem right now to use on the internet though GPRS (not in a 3G area)(only because u get 1gb allownce for the first 3months!), I would like to help you out with my ROM but i wouldnt even know where to start
THANX FOR YOU REPLY.I WOULDNT ASK YOU TO DO ANYTHING YET,i have done a lot on both the magician that i have and the universal.i have read a lot of discussion on these topics on this website.in my experience,if you are on a contract then yes you are dead right with what you say.at the moment on my device i have about 30 programs on it,it runs suitably fast enough for me.i have unlocked and unhidded the extrom and deleted it.i have an o2 exec running bits of tmobile and a bit of o2,because i have an tmobile sim.the unit is superb despite the neg comments on it,i have had masses of pdas and this is the coolest.currently i have xda exec, mda compact, fujitsu loox720(TOP CLASS PDA VERY DIFFICULT TO BEAT),TUNGSTEN T3,NOKIA9210,SHARP SL860.I would read more on here though because you can increase the confidence level and the level of knowledge u have.the way to do it is to unlock the extrom then soft reset, then unhide it then soft reset have u can see whats on your extended rom.i have an extra 10 meg now i am waiting for buzz god to find out how to delete the partition.the orange has the best today screen interface hence why i want to try it.the files can be copied onto a pc then zipped and posted.only try it though once you are comfortable.flashing roms onto the pda is far more gods will, wouldnt recommend that unless you are totally confident.
yes you can change the settings although i am happy with the config at the moment, easier just to install the extrom bits
If i install onto my exec Helmi WM6 v.1.1
will i still HAVE all of o2s random tripe like the tinterweb settings and such like... im just a lil worried that it wont work and ill have a nice expensive brick and i really dont like the thought of that
EDIT
can i install WM6 then just update with the damn O2 rom from their site??? or is it not compatable???
-DTM
There's nothing stopping you from flashing any ROM you like onto your device, and putting the O2 GPRS/MMS settings onto it.
There are enough links on the site with the O2 settings cab file if you search.
You will not be getting the O2 Active either, but again, this is something you can search for yourself and add to it.
I suggest you read the wiki http://wiki.xda-developers.com/ and this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=269118 (which really should be a sticky hint hint mods) before you do anything, as it sounds like you need to understand the difference between a ROM, and an Extended ROM.
I cannot beleive it was that easy,, i just needed to extract 2 files.... stoopid me lol.. TY Very much Alan

Whoops spoke too soon...... the dreaded thing has happened

Hello all,
I recently purchased a Cingular 8525 and I'm really considering upgrading the phone's OS to WM6. I've successfully used the unlocker to unlock the SIM and made it SuperCID.
I did a search on this topic but really couldn't find anything that was in one spot....
I'm creating this poll for all those newbies (like myself who want to upgrade).
This poll is for any flavor of WM6....
Cheers to all...
Wow!!!!
It's pretty amazing that no one has bricked their phone while upgrading to WM6. As a newbie, I feel pretty confident upgrading this weekend...
I've printed up the guides and downloaded all the software...
I've decided to use the LVSW version.
Thank you to all for all your input and advice.
There are several threads with people bricking their phones (at least temporarily). Maybe after their experience they are too scared to come back here and answer the poll

That's exactly why I read the wikis and read the threads for 3 weeks before I even THOUGHT about upgrading. And even then I had to ask questions and sound like an idiot and sweat during the whole upgrade.
I originally went with LVSW and then with Black v1.2....I just couldn't resist.
Jim
I brick and can unbrick my tytn
Yes i try to upgrade my softbank with a dopod rom, for winmobil6 LVSW, and my phone brick after a 17% but reading all wiki, i can recover so is beautiful mobile 6, i'm happy with black edition 1.1 cyu
I know exactly what you're saying I've been reading the Wiki's and guides non stop in the evenings. My wife hates me at this point because I'm spending more time reading about the upgrade and asking questions than spending "Quality Time" with her
I guess, my fear is (like many of us newbies wanting to upgrade) bricking my $500 Cing 8525 and being out of warranty. I don't know about the rest of the gang here but 1/2 a grand is a lot of duckets
Quick question for you.... may I know why you decided to go from the LVSW flavor to the Black v1.2 flavor? Was the installation process the same?
Just curious....
Thanks

I can upgrade successfully without any major problem.
The only problem is while I am trying to restore the GPRS/MMS Setting, although I am using cab file for this network wizard but only can be done for 3G/GPRS but not for MMS...
Guys i want upgrade to WM6 but when i read the bricked section of ht WM6 upgrade i am holding back, i am unsing Dopod 838 Pro which is Hermes (HTC) and i have the following ROM upgrader (plpease look at the attached Photo). can some one please advice me if they have used this ROM for the upgrade of Hermes???
i will not want my oda to be a brick as its 3 cmonth old and still under warranty...
Hi truffle1234,
You may want to create a new thread asking your question. The intent of this thread is to find out the installation success rate for people who have already tried to upgrade to WM6.

Well...I guess after I successfully flashed LVSW without bricking my (almost) new 8525 I thought what the hell and flashed Black v1.2 on the spur of the moment...my wife says I have impulse control issues. But I'm glad I did. It seems to run smoother, quicker response and better handling of some of my 3rd part apps.
I've done ALOT of trial and error. I have hard reset my phone (of my own volition) 5 times over the past week. I'm a bit OCD and after trying out programs to see how I run it seemed like the memory went back up all the way. So I hard reset to start over again.
I finally have it working the way I like and the Black, from my low-level of experience, seems stable and more functional than the Palm I used t carry.
I have the following installed:
Weather to Go (working construction/realty I need accurate Wx)
BattMemory (I'm anal about checking program memory and its a small plug in)
O2Plus (great for hitting a button and seeing what apps are open)
Palm threated SMS (I hate the native SMS program on the 8525)
MORTGAGECalc (REALTOR, nuff said)
GoogleMaps (REALTOR, nuff said)
Batti (I like the top bar that shows charging status and level no matter what app I'm in
ClearTemp (cleans out settings and temp filed quickly)
VibraSwitch (allows me to switch between vib and sound a la Treo 650)
PTTFix (allows me to remap the PTT button)
I've tried some other apps that did not go so well...SPB, Mobile Shell worked well a few days then slowed everything down...I liked the tabs and the plug in but it kept slowing the system down...and a bunch of others.
I'm not a big media user so I don't need TCMP or any other cool multimedia gadgets so I kept it to what I need. I keep my laptop with me normally so I don't need to watch movies or do any of that stuff. Most of my business work is done on the laptop. I have avvenu (www.avvenu.com) on my desktop so I can pull any file from my desktop from my phone via IE, which is a nice feature.
I soft reset every morning when waking the system up and it runs alot smoother than my T650 did.
I've not missed a single call since getting the 8525, the Push email is alot better than 3rd party apps for Palm, the 3G rocks where I am, and I get better reception. On my T650 I would get 1-2 bars or no service sitting in my house but with the 8525 I get 2-3 3G bars as a rule.

Check out the Hermes Section and look for "Palm SMS" thread or something like that. It goes over the MMS settings quite in depth.
just follow the guide and it should be fine. I am a beginner to this too but do some research and reading and follow the GUIDE! the guide is excellent!
Well everybody, just wanted to give a brief update that I was able to upgrade my Cingular 8525 to WM6 No problems on this end. Would definitely recommend the update to all.
Which flavour did you upgrade to??
Black is back in
I had no problems with either Black 1.1 or 1.2. Upgrades went like a charm. Not waiting for Black 2.0
Used Mr Vanx's guide to upgrade my HERM200 to the LVSW edition (25/3 version). I encountered no problems at all.
Device seems to work fine, though in Surinam we don't have all the advanced mobile phone features as in europe (like gprs etc).
First time upgrade
Dear all,
I contacted HTC for my device upgrading and ROM updates, and they direct me to this forum.
I have a TyTN unlocked device, and want to upgrade to WM6. I explored all what you posted here but couldn't decide which version and link is suitable for me. Any way, here down my device information, and I'm appreciating any help to upgrade my device to WM6.
Device Information:
Device Name: HTC TyTN (Unlocked)
Language: English
Processor: SC32442A - 400MHz
Memory: 49.05 MB
System: Windows Mobile 5.0 OS 5.1.195 (Build 14955.2.3.0)
That are all information I could get from my device
Need Help my friends.
After all, I beleive that HTC should have an upgrade area to support their devices.
Thank you in advance.
Hi there!
its good to know that HTC assistants sent you here on this forum !!
I can suggest you to go for the wm6 image black 2.5 as its been always the most stable for me, so read the wiki and all the documents to upgrade your hermes to that version.
http://www.mrvanx.org/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=37&Itemid=26
and don't run in the upgrade, take your time to read everything and if you don't understand something, come back here.

It depends on your personal reasons for upgrading. If you want to upgrade because of more speed and more stability you should try Black 2.5. If you are doing it because of adventuresomeness you should give all of the great roms here a try.
But at least you should try Black 2.5, Duttys V2 and Custels 1.3 to find out which one is the best for you. You should also try different radios to see if theres a difference in your area.
And don't forget the most important object: read mrvanx upgrade guides very very carefully and follow every step exactly.
be aware that the ROMs here are *unofficial* and *unsupported* ROMs.
HTC will NOT help you out if you screw up your device.
if you are unsure about flashing, then stay with the stock ROM.
I have a UK unlocked Tytn and would very strongly recommend Black 2.5.
My first ever ROM upgrade was Black 1.2 and it was soo god. 2.0 was even better and 2.5 better still. Have had no problems, battery life is much better, doesn't lockup/freeze any more, loads more memory available.....i could go on.
Go for it - follow mrvanx's upgrade guide. he makes it very easy
Flashig roms is one way... be careful...
When I first flashed a WM6 Rom on to my HERMES I made sure I read all the preinstall instructions very carefully as I didn't have a clue about flashing. MR VANX's guide is excellent, follow it carefully and you can't go wrong.
I have now successfully flashed numerous ROMS on to my device.
No-one can tell you which is the best ROM as they are all excellent for their own different features and customisations. You will need to try a few and see which you like best.
Good Luck.
I highly doubt
That an HTC representative sent someone here for ROM updates to WM 6.0.
If they did and are caught, they will probably be terminated.
I deal with HTC regularly and they don't condone or encourage our methods of tuning and research.
Be careful out there.
Thank you
Thank you a lot for your replies guys. They helped me a lot. I'll do the upgrade and will back to you with the results. Thanks again.

It always amazes me how corporate structures can be so schizoid. I too have received- from in-the-trenches personel- a pointer to this site specifically for beta testing WM6 Push. Conversely, the moderators here made it clear that management at HTC was a major impetus behind MS's request that the ftp archives be pulled.
The kicker for me is that the Wiki on HTC's US site specifically points to this XDA-developers and those postings are all vetted by someone at HTC USA. I'm thankful for that because that's how I found this site in the first place.
My Upgrading Status
First of all, I would like to add my voice to (teambnet) that I'm thankful for them to made me know this website and forum in the first place.
OK, about my upgrading status guys, I did exactely as shown in mrvanx.org website and did install WM6 Black 2.5, everything is gone fine except one thing, that the button of contact voice tag is not working. When I push that button, it gives me a message "Error opening the shortcut or locating the target filename.", I tried then to assign the shortcut to a program by going to Start --> Settings --> Buttons, but I couldn't find the program that should be assigned. I don't know if my problem are clear or not but I tried to explain as much I could. Any suggestions to solve that?
Thanks all,

I always suspected that secretly HTC were using us as beta testing guinea pigs, now it looks like I was right! And half of the fixes for their bugs are created by developers on this site.
Seriously though, if your Hermes is no longer covered by the original HTC warranty (as mine was from the very first day I got it, since I bought it from an "unauthorized" distributor), then HTC have nothing to lose by pointing someone to this site. They might as well have said, "Flush it down the toilet for all we care..."
John
HTC's wiki is just like ours, anyone can edit it... So i doubt that HTC themselves put a link to XDA on their wiki, but someone else probably did..
You need to install the voice commander CAB located on the first page of BLACK2.5 Then remap the button.
You should read thru the numerous posted before asked already resolved issues. Congrats on the UPGRADE!!!

Finally Finished
Hi all,
Thank you stuckes, I did as you told me and everything gone very nice. WM6 is a nice OS, not that much different from WM5 at least for me. But, it's nice. Thank you all for your help in that.
I got a question, when I would to upgrade, there are many versions of WM6, Black2.5 and other versions, where can I find a complete comparison with screenshots of them to decide if I'm gonna change to another one or stick to black 2.5?
Regards,

I would say "Yes" Go ahead and upgrade your phone with that Rom.
Is it worth the trouble; well Tell us the trouble you have after you upgrade to the t-mobile rom.
As for Backup software I would suggest ArcServe 7. Oh wait I think ArcServe has a newer mobile version!
Seriously, you should read the wiki and maybe a few threads before upgrading (or should I say bricking) your phone.

As I understand it, Cingular has a load of bloatware installed - but if you use this stuff then the t-mobile ROM won't include a lot of it and you'll need to install it by cab files. A lot of the cabs are included in some of the xda-dev WM6 ROMS. Using the Cingular ROM should also keep you in warranty if anything goes wrong.
If you're a heavy user of the standard phone functions then either the Cingular or t-mobile ROMS should be ok (but remember to make a note of your wireless/data/mms settings or get the cab file to re-install them - maybe here http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_provider_cabs ).
With both of the above ROMS you get the official support through the customer service help lines. This will generally be limited to a twat who knows ****-all about phones except that the one superglued to his ear hurts after a 12 hour shift.
If you want good WM6 ROMS with good support (not always immediate but often quicker than queueing for a helpdesk) then try Black or LSVW. Both are great and most annoyances or problems have been found and already resolved.
As for the backup software, all the stuff I need backed up is already synced with outlook. The actual program files I always re-install after a ROM upgrade - I think this is the safest way. A piece of software which is always mentioned when people ask about backups is SPB backup http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/?en. I can't recommend it because I don't use it, however it seems to be highly regarded.

You can't be serious.
Have you read a frickin' thing in your 40+ posts?
Load that Dash ROM on anything, right? ****, put it on your Panasonic wireless 5.8 GHz phone while you're at it.
Gimme some of what you're smokin', dude.
You know that the MDA is a Wizard, and your 8525 is a Hermes, right? You will brick your phone if you don't follow the instructions for a Hermes.
As for bloatware, Black 3.0 is the newest and fastest ROM out there.
t-mo mda is for WM5.0?I
i looked at the "do i need this upgrade?" and it says it's WM5.0. Is anyone sure that this is for WM6.0 and not 5.0? The dash upgrade clearly says 6.0.
Oops, I brick my phone. . . Perhaps not. Was it a wizard or hermes? I don't know. Just gimme a link to some WM6 roms and I will flash them iusing Vista. Probably more than one rom at a time.
p.s. Please don't take this seriously. Enjoy!

That T-Mo was releasing WM 6.0 for the MDA. Can you get into the OS.NB file and check the build dates?
Otherwise, look up Faria's Wizard ROM and unlock your phone. I used Faria's on my K-Jam before I switched to a TyTN.
