Ok i've used PDA's for a good while now but the P3300 (XDA Orbit) is my first PDA phone that i've owned.
In regards to the SIM Card. how the hell do you manage the contacts correctly?
If i select copy all sim number to contacts, it shows up both the sim and contacts so everything is duplicated.
is there a way of stopping contacts looking at the SIM aswell?
Also, can you recommend the best soft keyboard?
for typing texts the standard one is rubbish for me.
Thanx guys
hmm..
i had this problem also with the duplication. i tried to go through the list and delete all the sim contacts but some of them wouldn't go away! i think my solution in the end was to back up the contacts on the PC using ActiveSync, then i think i put the sim in another phone, deleted all contacts, then put the sim back, and transferred the contacts back off my PC onto the phone (and i may have had to remove the duplicated from the backed up contact in Microsoft Outlook)
someone will probably have a better methodology, but this worked for me!

I have just bought an O2 XDA (PW10A1) from Ebay. I have installed a Vodafone SIM, and I managed to unlock the XDA by replacing the ROM with the xda developers ROM SER V1.2 - superb, and a donation made just for that.
My next problem is how to get the phone to see the contacts on the Vodafone SIM card. Note. The phone works fine, and I can update contacts from my PC using activesync, however the contacts on the SIM aren't or don't appear to be visible anywhere (that I can see).
Also the 'SIM Tool Kit' included in the ROM upgrade doesn't open or work at all. If I tap the icon in programs, nothing happens. If it did, would this allow me to see the SIM contacts? :?
To all you boffins, my thanks in anticipation!
You should click on "sim manager", this will bring up your sim contacts, you can then either move some or all of the sim contacts to the pda contacts list, sim contacts are not automatically copied, it must be done manually.
Many thanks for your posting, but I have to admit that my wife figured it out first thing this morning.
Doh!
Everything works fine now.
Cheers & Happy Christmas!
This is a culmination of my previous threads. I've realised I'm not going to get an answer to each of my current problems so I'm going to have to hard reset and start from scratch. Which is just what I needed.
Summary of my problems:
- Speed dial numbers tell me the number doesn't exist, but then calls it anyway
- Can't add new speed dial numbers
- Can't add new contacts full stop
- MSN doesn't work
- Can't sync contacts (or anything for that matter)
So I am going to hard reset - but my problem is I need a way to back up my contacts, I don't want to be manually typing in dozens upon dozens of names and numbers. I have tried PPCPimBackup, but this doesn't seem to back up those stored on my SIM (most of my contacts are on my SIM). I can't find a way to move my contacts to the phone from the SIM - "Save to contacts" in SIM Manager tells me it was successfully added, but it wasn't - there is no Outlook version of that contact.
What can I do about this? Is there a way I can back up my contacts, bearing in mind that syncing doesn't seem to copy them onto my computer and PPCPimBackup only seems to back up Outlook contacts? I do have an SPB Backup of my PIM stuff from when I was on WM5, but that's what has caused this problem, trying to restore it. I have tried searching these forums for other ways to back them up but it's like finding a needle in a haystack. Is there a program that can read PIM.vol?
What on earth should I do? Or is physically writing down all my 100+ contacts then typing them in (and losing all my stored SMS) my only option?
Device: O2 XDA Orbit, as out of the box in July, then upgraded to WM6 with the O2 official thing.
Computer: Vista Ultimate x32, Outlook 2007.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but surly if your numbers are on your SIM they shouldn't be effected by a hard reset.
If your worried take the sim out before you try it??
hard reset won't remove anything from your SIM
Can someone tell if there is an easy way to do this?
Basically, I want to copy all my SIM contacts to my phone contacts (I know how to do this using the SIM manager).
But I don't want all of the contacts to apear twice in the contact list. Is there anyway to setup the contact list to hide the sim contacts? I want to keep the contacts in the SIM card so I can move them from phone to phone, but I want it in the phone as well so I can sync it to gmail through active sync.
Any Thoughts?
- thanks

Searching took me 2 seconds to find this registry edit. I'm not trying to be an @$$ but just remember to search before posting.
22. Hide SIM Contacts: HKCU\ControlPanel\Phone - create a new DWORD value named "ShowSim" and set it to 0

What ROM are you running?
Also, IIRC either going to Options in the Contacts menu allows or changing a setting in the WM Settings menu does this.
As for copying your contacts from SIM to phone memory, you should have a SIM Manager in your applications that allows you to copy back and forth, as well as backup, etc. It took me a couple minutes to realize that you don't have to select each contact manually, rather there's a very narrow line above the first contact when you open the list to transfer. Make sure that's highlighted, then select to get all contacts at once.

If you want to test this, i adapted the .exe to have icon and shortcut, have just installed and installs, but do not have a SIM to test Dash with, the program is originally for PPC.
There is no GUI press once to hide, pres again to show.
Install to device.

You didn't read my post very thoroughly, did you? Rather than digging into the registry at all, the ONLY thing that you NEED to do to hide or show sim contacts is to change ONE setting in your phone.
The other process I was talking about was how to use the included application to copy contacts from SIM to phone...and even that's easier than it sounds in my post once you know the nuance of the SIM Manager.
I'm sort of stabbing in the dark here, but my issue is this: When I open my received text messages, the peoples contacts that I have sync'ed with facebook should show their photo. This is how it worked when I first got my phone.
I have done a few factory resets since then, and yesterday loaded a new rom. I loaded my contacts that I had backed up to SD card.
For some strange reason ALL of my contacts have hiphens ( - ) in their phone numbers. I think this is causing some texts to not be delivered.
Also, when in the messages window, all of my contacts photos wont be displayed. But if I go to the people directory they are displayed fine.
Now, is there a way I can delete the cache or similar without factory resetting the rom?
I have rom manager, and I used this to reboot into recovery before loading a new rom. In there was options for deleting cache and things (to be honest I didn't know which was the correct one so I did them all before loading a new rom). Now when I go into rom manager it just loads a sign like this a!
so I cannot try that again.
Thanks for any help given!!
Why did you back up to memory card if they're going to be saved to the cloud via your Google account?
Otherwise I have no answer for your question.

I had all sorts of problems with the facebook integration.
The magor one I had was that the phone would automatically use the facebook phone number and not the one in the phone which was very annoying when people put fake numbers in their facebook profile or don't update for their new number and also all the numbers had a +44 on them which meant my phone wouldn't dial them at all!
My advice is remove your facebook account and see what happens. The try adding it again. If the problems persist then keep it removed. Life will be easier without your phone and facebook contacts being merged and updated all the time... trust me!
Phil
Thanks for your replies.
Regarding the backing up of contacts, does anyone recommend a GOOD FREE app for backing them up? I simply do not wish to use Google to back up my contacts. They are personal, and I would prefer to keep them on the phone. Google contacts is pointless to me.
If you would like Google contacts I have no say but I would rather not have my contacts spread out all over the place, with different versions etc...
It's going to take me forever to edit everyones phone number, and each time I flash a ROM I'll need to do it again..
Worst still, since flashing PaYs ROM the Google sync actually worked for the very first time since receiving the phone - So, now Google contacts has all of my contacts but the phone numbers have dashes is ( - ) which is wrong. Like the person above me, us in the UK have issues when dialing strange numbers!
Google contacts is fine, means you never have to worry about them being backed up as it's automatic...otherwise you've gotta sync them with yur email client on your PC which is hassle...I was a stickler for backing up to Outlook but now use Google...
The dashes come up after restoring contacts from the SD card...don't know why it does it but it can't be removed (another reason not to back up to sd card)
while in the htc people app, just press menu button then you can export your contacts to your sd card, which you can then later on import again.

You asked for a way to back up your contacts without syncing them with google contacts, I provided you with a way to save them without having to use any app.
(it's the dutch flag, just made the World cup soccer finale)

Fair play, but it is this way of backing up contacts that is giving us the problems as per post #1 and this discussion
I have done a few factory resets since then, and yesterday loaded a new rom. I loaded my contacts that I had backed up to SD card.
For some strange reason ALL of my contacts have hiphens ( - ) in their phone numbers. I think this is causing some texts to not be delivered.

Congrats on the world cup. I have stopped paying attention since we lost.
sorry my bad, i'll let you guys get back at it
Try contact2sim
Limitation of course is the small sim memory for numbers only.
Astro file manager has some backup capabilities. HTC sync....

Hi Peeps,
im struggling to view my sim contacts. I know for a fact that all my contacts are saved to my sim so why wont WP7 allow me to import them?
The option is greyed out. its seriously annoying me...
There must be a way? why is it not working?
thanks
my HD7 is unlocked and i'm using a T-Mobile sim, do you think this is the reason why i cant import my sim contacts? it cant read my sim or something?
Try use your old phone to synch them with outlook, then re-import them into your new phone

Import worked fine for me on a HD7 - very odd.
Thats very strange.
You tried syncing them with other methods for example outlook?
im going to try it through GMAIL.
really annoyed though... import sim contacts is greyed out
I copied my old contacts from my Blackstone to SIM and then I was able to import from SIM to phone on my Omnia :/ Very odd.
Had some problem, now know why.
I had the same thing happen to me. I would hit the import sim contacts button, it would wurr for a moment then gray out, but no contacts came over. Then I switched sim cards and it worked the very first time. When I examined the two sim cards I realized that one was older and had a slightly larger gold contact area. The older one didn't sync but the newer, narrower one did. If you have an older sim take it into a t-mo store, tell them it's not working right with your phone, get a new one, and have them sync the contacts over to the new sim for you. It should work fine in your phone after that. Enjoy.
I´m also having the same problem. I also tried with a reset and also hard reset (Press Vol+ and Vol- while starting) Sim was copied once( with only ahand full of contacts, but second time with all nearly 500 contacts the import sim button was also grey and dead! Please help!
Thanks! OliRom
