The file you need to change is the Bkgnd_Port.bmp in the windows folder. I think the letters are drawn over this background. I tried to change this file but I faced 2 issues:
1. When saved the file size went from 27Kb -> 220Kb
2. The Greek letters added on the top left corner of eah button were not displayed correctly on the phone.
I suppose I'm not using the right program for editing the Bkgnd_Port.bmp
If you try to change it, too you have to copy it with Total Commander and the soft reset.
Any ideas?

Hmm i give it a try tommorow.. thanks m8
I've edited the Bitmap and I also got a ~220K file.
I've tried it and the dialer is still putting the numbers/English characters bitmaps on top of the Bkgnd_Port file so it's blocking the new characters I've added.

it does, just soft reset the device everytime you change the skin
How to change the phone skin manually
You can manually change the phone skin by overwriting the following files located on the \Windows folder of the Pocket PC Phone Edition device:
clg_dlrbtn.gif
clg_dlrbtnd.gif
clg_in.gif
clg_miss.gif
clg_out.gif
dlr.gif
dlrclr.gif
dlrclrd.gif
ending_dlrbtn.gif
end_dlrbtn.gif
end_dlrbtnd.gif
hld_dlrbtn.gif
hld_dlrbtnd.gif
snd_dlrbtn.gif
snd_dlrbtnd.gif
spd_dlrbtn.gif
spd_dlrbtnd.gif
spd_lst.gif
Just download a phone skin and copy the above files to your Pocket PC. Then reboot the Pocket PC to activate the new skin.
Re: How to change the phone skin manually
One additional piece of information: there is no .gif for a depressed number button. For unknown reasons, this image is stored as an icon resource inside a DLL.
I made DLLs with that icon for the "Candy Red" and the "Wood and Chrome" DesignLabs skins. These DLLs can be downloaded from http://www.tadzio.com/ppc/skins/TapResCandyRed.dll and http://www.tadzio.com/ppc/skins/TapResWoodAndChrome.dll , respectively. If you wan to create your own, take one of the above as a template, then edit it in a resource editor (VC++ works nicely).
To install such a DLL, copy it to the \Windows directory on your PPC, then change the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Phone\IcoFil to the name of your DLL, and perform a soft reset.
Have fun!

use a resource editor .. heres the site so you can choose app ..
http://protools.reverse-engineering.net/utilities.htm
i suggest the Borland resource Workshop .. just dont know if it still there .. o compatible with winxpsp2
exescope is also great .. but a shareware
PS always make a backup of a dll .. sometimes .. resource editor causes the dll to be corrupted ..
help!
okay i am using the resource hacker but i cant change anything or edit the image! help!
there has to be an easier way!

hi S1MB4D ..
some of the resouce editor only replaces or added the bitmap or image file use in the dll or exe, and it doesnt entirely create nor edit the image.. like the Resource hacker by Angus Johnson
thats why im suggesting the Borland Resource Workshop since it has that capabilities .. but since www.inprise.com no longer exist .. you can only use a resource editor that has that limitation .. to edit the image u will have to use an image editor like the windows paint or adobe photoshop .. or if it is an icon then an icon editor .. then replace the one included in the dll .. using the resource editor ..
but if you want to edit only the icon in an exe or dll for example the tapres.dll like the one above you can use an icon editor that can extract and automatically replaces the icon included in the dll or exe like in this link ..

You can try to duplicate the file sym.0409.txt in the windows folder and name this new file sym.0407.txt. It worked for me for the french keyboard (sym.040C.txt in french).
What Atmis said, I simply modified the sym.0409.txt file in /Windows so I easily could type Swedish characters such as å,ä & ö with a/o + space. You need to copy it over to your computer with active sync, edit the file then move it back.

Already tried to copy the origional sym.409.txt to sym.407.txt (german) but when i press the "blue" space nothing happens.
You need to replace the sym.0409.txt file if your OS is in English.

Actually i've 3 files (for testing) sym.0409.txt, sym.0407.txt, sym.txt and it does not work.
Having Hermes with QWERTZ keyboard (switzerland) and English WM6 (Vanilla)
That's interesting. I had the same issues when upgrading my device to AKU 3.3. After some changing forward backward between English and German Keyboard it suddenly worked.
I also upgraded a second device and I cannot get the space key working to change between the special letters.
I know it does not help but maybe it's an device bug. I will downgrade the device the other device when I can get it back again and see if it works with the original image.
It was working flawlessly for me, I just had to reboot the device after creating the new file.

... After HardReset, installing the "German Input Cab", modifiying sym.0409.txt and a reboot everything is working fine...
Probably some manipulation described in the wiki i made before installing the cab made the changes...

Ehm. I am not trying to sound stupid or anything. but how do I find this"sym.409.txt"? I would like to change some of the keys into norwegian symbols like æ, ø and å.
I have just heard something about the root folder.
But in that case. where is it, I assume that I am just being blind or something but.
THanks for your help

Not blind, the file is hidden, at least on my system with Josh Manulla2D.
To see the file in Windows, using File Explorer, click on "Menu/Show All Files".
My problem is that I have made changes for my German keyboard on an English language install, but I cannot replace the file in \Windows. All I get is an Access Denied message.
Anybody know how I can get past this to replace the sym.409.txt file?
Task Manager is installed so surely it must be some service that needs killing to free up the file.
Regards
Peter

change the string value of

Layout Text = eT9 IME
then reboot

Hi all,
I have had a couple of questions on how to change the globe on the internet tab from the globe to a pic of your choosing.
I have attached the files you need. All you need to do is Create 2 png pictures that are 512x256 and name them the same as in the files.
Once you have done this copy them onto your device, turn off touchflo and drop them along with the mainla file into your windows directory using total commander (or similar) and restart touchflo and hey presto your very own internet icon.
Have fun
works great!!
I made a nice Opera logo, maybe someone likes to use it.
Can't find a good screen capture program, just try it.
You have to copy all three files to the windows directory using total commander or other.
EDIT: found screen capture program, so now included
very nice
Hope to see a few more of these on here. People have been looking but no one has replied.

Unfortunately this does not work on my German O2 stock rom.
They probably use another manila file for selecting the image on the internet tab.
I have to investigate further...

I finally solved it, thanks to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2861249
I have to edit a file in \Application Data\Manila which holds the information about banner and operator links.
Thanks anyway for the information in this thread
BTW: You can add a property Text to the Banner node to display a heading under the banner icon
Many thanks to David. I've customised my Internet globe.
I 'emptied' the Youtube text as well as picture reference fields in your attached XML. So nothing shows. Hmm, now I am wondering how I can incorporate another program icon to be exact ...
remove the globe
Thanks for the tutorial, but to me the globe is useless, i would like to start at the tab with only my favorites and no globe at all; so is it possible to fully remove the globe?
I dont know. It might be possible but due to way TF3D uses the Mainla files you would have to modify it in such a way that it doesn't know there should be anything there and that it going waaay above my head.
It's not as simple as deleting the file you might actually have to change the more progamming but i'm sure someone could help

You just need to delete the "Banner" node (i.e. everything between and including "<Banner [...] />", without the quotes.).

It will, however, not give you the full TAB funcionality. If you're used to using the TAB key for jumping from one field to another this doesn't work.

If you are using the english keyboard layout, you can edit the file eT9.Rhodium.wwe.kmap.txt in the windows directory to map one of the keys to TAB.
I have attached a copy that maps "fn + T" to "Tab" if that's all you are looking for. Just copy it to a folder in your TP2 and use resco/total commander to copy it to your windows directory.
P.S: If you are going to edit it further, remember to save it as unicode or else your keyboard will not function correctly. To revert back to the original keyboard settings, just delete the file from the windows directory and it'll revert back to the original file that came with the ROM.
The up/down arrow keys send you from one field to the next
I use PQzII (http://www.nicque.com/PQz/PQzII.htm) to map "Ctrl + Q" to "Tab", I also installed HookMgr from (http://www.mobiion.com/)

Go to HKLM\Software\Tegic\eT9\Ime\KeyboardLayouFiles and look at what file is registry key "07FF" is pointing to. That's the file that is currently being used to define the mapping rules. Copy it out to your pc and amend it using notepad and save it as a unicode txt file.
There are instructions in the txt file itself - you can amend the mapping of other keys if you desire.
