WM6 Live Messenger not using wifi - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

Hi,
Can anyone help me, this is doing my head in! When I am connected to wifi I can browse the internet with IE but as soon as I try and sign in with messenger it tries to connect over gprs.
If i delete all my gprs settings and just have a wifi connection live failes to connect at all.
Any ideas?
Cheers

Yes there is a solution to your problem and its quite simple.
Don't use WML.
This has been a long standing bug with live messenger and Microsoft has not fixed it.
I suggest you use the older and more convenient Pocket Messenger which does not have this issue.
Up to you!

I belive the issue is fixed in .2600 build. At least mine works just fine, while .1100 build was insisting on using GPRS connection.

Your are right, it also let you choose if you want to sync your MSN contact with your phone contact.
This new build correct most of the flaw of the previous one

Thank you!!!!!!!!

easy 2 fix.
disable your phone, connect wifi, connect messenger over wifi, then re-enable the phone.
should continue to use the wifi....
but as soon as you go out of wifi range, or disable itwill want to use gprs/3g. so sign out 1st.

By the way, I'm looking for build .2600 CAB and I cannot find one. I would appreciate if someone could send me a download link.
Thanks.

Windows live &WM6 WiFi

Hello,
i have noticed that windows live ignor my wifi connection and alwayes start establishing gprs but when i cancel it it goes back to wifi and use it instead. how can i make it use wifi as default?
please note that all other application uses wifi when available except windows live (messenger, hotmail, etc...)
thanks.
I don't think you can the official word on the subject is that WiFi drains your battery much faster than gprs and hence it will always use gprs. I just have to remember to turn off the phone before Windows Live.
Its a bit of a pain, but hey, what can you do...
Can anyone enlighten us all?

Yeah, I noticed that too. Strange that. I was always under the impression that turning-off your phone (putting it into flight-mode) renders all radio communication, bluetooth, phone & wi-fi incapable of being used!?!? Never actually tried though, but then what's the point of 'Flight-Mode'?
I would have thought that a registry tweak could resolve this, but I'm not that competent as these things.
using Jwrightmcps's wm6 rom for mda pro i've been able to connect to my wifi network, but the device wont make use of it (my gprs is not setup during this testing)

i am using Jwrightmcps's wm6 .08 ROM.
I was able to use windows live with Wifi, but after I configured the GPRS, it would not connect with wifi because gprs was off.
I deleted the GPRS and after I was able to sign in but no contacts were shown on messenger.
Still under investigation....

it's not an issue with Jwright's ROM, it's the way Windows Live is configured by M$. If you read any of the WM6 threads, you'll see there is a CAB to disable the GPRS autoconnect. Just click on the attachments of pretty much any WM6 thread and you'll find it.

Did the cab work for you? I was reading and it said that the cab would disable GPRS all together and not just for windows live.

Turn off GPRS

Anyone know how to turn the GPRS off so that it never comes on?
What you need is this ......... creates an icon called No Data, with it you can toggle on and off your GPRS, I've been using for a while and it is excellent, stops GPRS connections altogether until you want it...
Activesync it somewhere on your orbit and then click on it within File Explorer
Ah! Stew! Saviour! A million thanks... exactly what I was looking for...
Why?
Hi
Why turn GPS totally off? does it use more battery when your not using it?
MicTh
Hi there MicTh...
I'm with O2 and their data tarrifs are somewhat expensive.
I use wifi a lot so don't need GPRS. There has been the odd occasion where I've lost wifi signal and the phone started connecting with GPRS...
The above program put a stop to this!
SG
Ohhh.. stupid me :O)
I thought u were talkin about turning GPS off.... My bad
thanks i have also been looking for app like this

This can be done easily by:
Settings->Connections->Connections->Advanced->Select Networks->(in the first ComboBox) select "My Work Network" and click OK
No GPRS does it much simpler, simply toggling between on and off....GPRS can sometimes connect on demand, the phones demand not yours when receiving messages or when Quick GOS has become outdated, NO GPRS is the simplest solution I've found.......
Thanks - I've installed this - one question
I have disabled Mobile Web and O2 Active
Will I still receive MMS messages ???

thanks for your help ive got it sorted
now ive installed it and i click on the nodata icon it shows gprs as deactivated but if im usin wifii it says connecting to gprs is that normal or have i done something wrong.
also if it says connecting to gprs while nodata is installed does it still run up the bill, orbit is all new to me so im still trying to find my way around it im used to normal phone.
Hi,
just a question on this wifi-gprs. Is there a way to include a priority on one of the two?
I would like my phone to connect through wifi is it finds free or known connections, otherwise it should use wifi.
Anybody know of a setting to get this done?
Patrick
I have a Hermes and I can stop my GPRS connection instantly.
Please try this (also on other HTC models)...
When you still have a GPRS connection press and hold down the hangup button for 3 to 6 secs. (the red phone you use the end a phonecall) until the little GPRS icon disappears.
GPRS as a service will stay available.
Hi.
I'm sorry but I am having a noobie moment.
I have transferred the 3 NOGPRS files into My Music (cos I couldn't think of anywhere else to put it) and clicked on the "setup" file which opens revealing lines of code. But that's it, how do I install it? Where do I find the icon?
Sorry, this might seem basic to you but it is very complicated and difficult to understand for me.

msn live insists on connecting GPRS

i've tried this on 3 different ROMs now and it's always the same
i'll have my WLAN connected and working fine
but if i use msn live it insists on connecting GPRS and ignores the WLAN altogether
any ideas ?
it's got me stumped
Yes, most anoying stuff for many of us...
You can get Messenger work over Wifi only if you config the Connections to any unconfigured settings (liek default My ISP before config).
Regards.

Good luck with that. I dumped WLM because of this and use Pocket messenger instead. Does the job and does not screw up your contacts by syncing with your hotmail account.

Imagine you have just flashed your TyTN, and get connected trough Wifi. You have not configured the GPRS/3G connection yet. In this situation, live messenger works over Wifi. But if messenger detects any GPRS/3G data service available, use it before any other data service. Live Messenger is coded to use GPRS/3G before Wifi.
right, so i need to use pocket messenger then
that's good because i hate the syncing thing it does
thanks for the advice
According to M$, that issue is fixed in the newest version....6.0.6000.16386
and where do we get this latest version from?

Thanks for the information.
However this is still considered a bug since at some point in time you will need to set your GPRS.
GPRS and BT dial-up
The same thing completely occurs to me with some different ROM.
In addition, the line of GPRS and BT dial-up often cuts when suspending
it.

More thah a bug i beleave is a bad design. Take in count MSN Live is made for many PDA, and no all the PDAs have Wifi, so perhaps they forgot to make Wifi as preferred connection for the devices that have Wifi.

Goto CommManager and turn off "Phone" and turn on "WLAN" (so only Wlan is enabled) then sign into MSN (it will force it to use WLAN) and then once youre in, re-enable "Phone" in CommManager! works for me
More of a 'workaround' than a 'it works' though...

Well, Windows Live can be unistalled only if was installed before...if was cooked in, then you can't uninstall.
The best way to have only Pocket messenger is to flash any lite ROM (dopod by edhass, Schaps lite, JJ Black lite, TNT lite.....) that don't include the Windows Live, so you can select what to install on the ROM.

Auto disconnect GPRS/WiFi when not in use?

Hi!
Is there something that could auto disconnect GPRS/WiFi, lets say after 10 min, if it wasn't used?
I wanted setup to check for new mail every 2 hours, and it connects to GPRS and then it stays connected forever, draining the battery without purpose...
Thank you.
I found one for WM5, and not sure if it will work for WM6...

Yeah, or something that the connection isnt reconnecting after i said DISCONNECT :/
Check this great little app, it syncs your Outlook accounts when you want and disconnects the data after...

Yes, this is the first and I must add the most annoying thing that I've experienced in WM6 (never had this in WM5), especially when you don't have unlimited data plan - that reconnection is just ridiculous.
It actually made me go back to WM5 for a while, until I decided give WM6 another chance. Hopefully I was able pinpoint what make it connect all the time - Windows Live service, specifically Windows Live Messenger. Basically you have to manually logout from the messenger before you close it, otherwise it will just minimize itself when you thought you closed it.
Or just don't use it...
@Sane:
Thanks for the link. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) I don't use Outlook and that app is pretty much useless for me, but sure it might be useful for others.
Speaking of Outlook, is there another good alternative to it which we could use to manage contacts? (not necessarily use it to sync with WM6 contacts directly, but perhaps be able export them to another format that later could be imported in WM6)
I've tryed NSContacts which is pretty good, if you can remmember all the time how to avoid some very nasty bugs in it that could make your 1 hour organizing contact be waste of time and you have to start over.
the best options
bandswitch or commgrpro by dan herrerra.

wmIRC

I've downloaded and installed the trial for wmIRC and it's working fine over WIFI on my HTC S621, but I can't get it to work over GPRS\EDGE ? I can use IE and Opera Mini without the WIFI.
Any ideas of what I can try, or are there other Windows Mobile Smartphone Standard IRC clients I could try?

make sure you start an edge connection before trying to log onto irc. i use wmirc daily and works through either connection. just open a browser and go to a website to initiate the data connection (for some reason wmirc will initiate *sometimes* and not others) then open irc and just hit connect. may take a sec to go through the ident and ****...but it gets there...

I've tried that, no luck. I don't have the ident option checked, but I never need it for WIFI. I'm just wondering if it's my carrier, Suncom blocking it. It's just strange to me that my email, IE, mini-opera, etc. works. But not this.
I'm looking now to see if I can find a way to link (or echo) messages over to an instant messenger ID. Because I know that I can get Palringo or some other IM client to work.
Thank you,
Tim

I wasnt so much talking about enabling indent..i was just talking about when you connect to the server and i queries the client..
what version of wmirc is it?
This probably doesn't help much but I have it working fine on another device over CDMA.
Honestly, prepare to be disappointed though. Its a very buggy program. The user lists tend to disappear, sometimes a new pm opens and switching from one to the next shows the same messages, and it randomly completely crashes.
There's also zsIRC at zsirc.com. However, this is many written for WM Pro, so there's a lot of things that you can't do if you don't have a touchscreen (also, you can't install the .cab on WM Standard and need to use the .exe installer.)
i agree. but for smartphone its really the only one that works. ive tried 3. wmirc, jirc and some other one that i cant remember.
as far as just chattin in a channel, its fine. ive had it up with no disconnects on the edge network for 8 hours. with wifi i have left on for days and it never crashed or disconnected. yea the user list is a little retarded, but thats a non issue for me. you can still use basic commands like /whois . i dont think its ever going to get better than this though. as far as i know, no one else is developing a new client.
so i guess just pick the lesser poison..if you want to run it through java (which i couldnt stand) try out jirc.
shoot me a pm and let me know what version you have. i will probably just give you a link to my site and you can try the one i have because i know it works. im running 6.1 rickys v. 24
I'm just using the standard 2.2 from the wmirc.com site.
