Using an XDA IIs just as a wi-fi pda? - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Hi,
I have an old XDA IIs that I don't use as my phone anymore. I just want to use it in the house on the wi-fi for net, skype and pda stuff.
What I'm wondering is, if I don't have to worry about the carrier (O2) because I'm not using it as a phone, then can I hack it a bit and improve the OS or is there something that you would recommend I do with it to maximize it's potential for non-phone use?
I guess if there is, then I have a few questions!
1. Would an alternative OS "find" all the features of the hardware? ie. camera/record/contacts/calendar etc. buttons and the keyboard?
2. Would it be worthwhile to install WM6? Would it be able to handle it? Is it possible?
I guess I'd just like to get the most out of it as it's a great device that could be put to good use instead of gathering dust in a drawer.
Many thanks for any replies in advance.
Cheers,
Rob.

1. only roms custom made for a pda will work unlike pc windows which include many many many various drivers then windows mobile only! have the drivers it needs and requires to work and or boot at all
2. yes http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=386

Hi again,
I've tried installing Windows Mobile 6 but I get this:
ERROR 100: MODEL ID ERROR
The ROM image that you are trying to use is not designed to work on your device. Please check the vendor website and download the correct ROM update.
Is there a way around this? Anyone experience this?
The XDA IIs is currently running: Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition Version 4.21.1088 (Build 15045.2.6.0)
Processor: Intel(r) PXA263
Memory: 125.77 MB
Should I just keep it at that, can I expect any better from an alternative/updated OS?
Thanks again,
Rob.

module id errror is typicaly if one try to install wm6 from another device then the one you own
"Should I just keep it at that, can I expect any better from an alternative/updated OS?"
there are only such a thing called alternative blue angel (the htc name of xdaIIs) os's no other will work
not sure what you mean by better i sugest you read the XDA-wiki and the blue angel wm6 forums for what people exp with these later roms
in terms of issues of incompatiblity and stablity
asking in those blue angel forums will also be a surden way of getting people who own the same device as you do to reply

Thanks for that Rudegar, I'll check it out!
Rob.

WM2005 sucks?

Looks like wm2005 still not very stable, a lot of programs still not working.
For example, Xbackup, set as ringtone or Monster Chinese, etc.
well alot of programs required new versions when 2003SE came out as well

Using it on my Imate for a month or more and no problem so far and no lock-ups like there were on WM2003SE
I think the title of this thread is misleading... :?
The fact that it does not run several applications or crashes is because:
1.- This version is not final
2.- It's not compatible because of it's very nature, IT'S A NEW OS!!!
The same happened when we upgraded our PCs to Windows XP don't you remember?
New versions will start to come up eventually, and even if you don't see any advances "right-out-of-the-box" it's because the main improvements on this OS reside behind the scenes, so Programmers will start to develop new and exciting apps that take advantage of the new features and APIs.
For me Windows Mobile 5.0 has been very stable even with the very first version that Buzz, Toe and the gang which had very limited memory resources I had no stability problems whatsoever.
There are limitations of course, (like no MMS, mediocre video camera, sms problems, etc) but eventually Microsoft OR our very own developers will take care of that!
So, BE PATIENT!!!!!
Hi,
Using it for 3 days in my Qtek 2020 and no problem at all.
Even Jabra250 works fine, when in 2003SE was difficult to setup.
About software that don't work, we must wait until new versions come out...
I'm sure when you update you computer from NT to W2K you has software that didn't work and had to buy new versions, so why should be different here?
Be patient.... Mobile5 is ok for now.

i double that
Rayan & all the rest are right!!!
I can't agree less to what Rayan wrote.
It's a new OS and a beta for that matter (check out Goras thread on "WM2005 that I can share"), If I'm not mistaken it's not also intended for Himalaya, judging on the memory problems just solved(!) by Buzz, toenailed, XdaJojo, mamaich & all the other contributors as well.
Personally in my opinion its a lot 'solid' than the WM2003 & SE since it has to crash yet on my xda II, as mentioned by Rayan even the initial release of the OS with limited memory was stable.
The problems with the apps like backup & camera are being solved one-by-one, MMS which doesn't even start before is now working (check out the threads on WM2005 in the forum).
Even now, the benefits of using the OS in terms of performance, stability & looks far outweighs its limitations (in my humble opinion) just be patient & leave it to the WIZARDS (Buzz, toenailed, XdaJojo, etc. etc. etc).
Besides, hey ttseng this is the xda-developers forum & we all are having fun testing, tweaking, & breathing new life to our "soon to be outlawed" XDA II ....... if not for the WIZARDS in the forum !!!!! Notice the request for the OS on the other xda models, aren't we lucky we have the WiZARDS working on the HIMA?
Cheers!
works flawlessly on XDA2 Himalaya!!!!!!!!
best os and most stable one ive come across ,wm200se never really happy but this WM2005 is and has been stable without a single hard reset or rest since install.even self configured the o2email and hotmail!! took the o2 uk config & connections setup file from a XDA2s_1-12-178-WWE_UK_Extended_ Rom.
Is there more than one version of WM2005 kicking about?
I successfully installed WM2005 on my XDA II, but I couldn't get many 3rd party apps to install on it. So I was surprised to see screenshots with certain utilities running ok.
I was wondering if there is more than one version of it floating about on the net. The one I installed was found on these forums, but I have recently downloaded another off usenet.
They are both himalaya.
I am sure a non-beta copy will rear its head on here sooner rather than later (I hope!)
Cam
this version is in the ftp section ,the rom has a file name of
wm2k5_XDA2_HIMALAYA_O2_fullRAM.rar
Yep!
That's the one!
That would make both copies I have the same.
Is this a late BETA or even an RTM version?
Now that the OS has been officially released I am guessing it's a race for someone to post the released version ;-)
the official full version is released?
wow!
so when can we have it for download here?
i am planning to put off my upgrade till the full version comes out.
currently i am on the win2003se which i aint very happy with!
plz advise...
thanx everybody.
It out but you cant get it.
I have a friend who is a manger in Microsoft. I sent the MS link of the offical release and asked if it can be obtained from the internal web software store. At the moment it cant and I feel it will also never be the case (2003 the end user could never buy).
So we are back to the carriers and if they will ship 2005 as an upgrade for ood devices or only on new (MDA XDA IV).
Dont think one needs to be a rocket scintist to answer that, was not one of the devices never shipped with 2003, the way I remember it it was buz that did a Chines to English translation.
So at least w on the BA side have to wait untill something gets leaked.
A little help with WM2005 upgrade please!!!!!!!
I see that most people have upgraded to WM2005 without much trouble, but not me!! I am with o2 and I've just upgraded and I can't us GPRS (it keeps trying to dial 193.113.200.195 and then drops the conx even though the IP is entered in the APN section) I can't run Worldmate pro (not compatable), TOMTOM 3 (need to upgrade to ver 4.4) pick up email etc etc.
Could I have the details that you need to enter into your XDA to connect to o2 network via GPRS so that I can access hotmail, messenger, MMS, Internet etc etc
I hope you can help as I don't want to downgrade to the old windows version.
i can send u a O2 customisation cab file if u need ,however your phone must b on contract with O2UK not payg or orange etc..
Yes Please!!
That'll be great. yes I am with O2 contract.......
where is the awesome rom !!! please
iam running w2005 in my XD2..but still MANY applications cant be installed..and i was surprised to see the screenshot (above) with many applications runing ..BUT i couldnt find the ROM...i found only the one for XDA2s..."XDA2s_1-12-178-WWE_UK_Extended_ Rom" actually is a zipped file with no rom inside..just many cab files ..can anyone help me please...thanks guys

windows mobile 2003 se or 2005

hi all,
first posting to the site so far and i some questions. so if someone could indulge me and answer these for me that would be great. i have an on xda 2 running on the latest upgrades from o2 (still no portrait to landscape though, what a pain!)
1. is there some kind of utility out there that can give mobile 2003 the portrait to landscape functionality?
2. is there any kind of sdk out there for the xda 2?
3. can the xda 2 be upgraded to either 2003 se or 2005?
4. if it can are there any limitations or drawbacks to doing so?
5. how difficult is it to backup the rom on the xda 2 and also how difficult is it to reload it back in the event of a problem?
6. anyone recommend a good fps for the xda 2. (one that takes advantage of the landscape option should it be available!!)
7. sorry to ask so many questions.
thanks in advance!!
1 yes http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=16025&highlight=landscape
2 yes it use the normal pocketpc stk's which stk you want depend on which version you use
3 yes
4 well the 2003SE is manualy translated by ppl from this forum i believe from chineese to english and that can give some issues i guess and also
the reason it was not released by the mayor english companys like o2 and tmobile could make one believe there are issues they dident want to work on fixing
2005 is a leaked beta rom and only supported by buzzdev and the himalaya device is not really hardware 2005 based which mean ppl have to use ram disk to get storage because soo little flash is present
5 depend on what you mean with backup a rom is a rom and any rom of the same operator and version you install will be like the rom you have now excluding the stuff you put on it
the stuff you put on it you have to backup yourself using xbackup, spiritebackup or activesync backup
6 games dont require the pocketpc windows to support landscape they handle their own screen in/output
many mayor know pc fps are made and free for pocketpc like
doom1 & 2, heretic, hexen, wolfenstein, quake 1 & 2, duke nuke'em 3d
you find them using search in this forum or in google with a search like this "Doom Pocketpc" and the likes

Serious Questions

Hi all,
I just got my first WM based phone, i have spent the last 4-5 days messing with different versions of ROMs but none seem to have a complete set of features!
Firstly i would like to congratulate all on all the obvious hard work put into these ROMS
I am currently using Black v3.01 which i find to be the best from having each of them installed, but there is still 2 things missing.
1)Windows Update is not available, is it possible to enable it (Does it even make a difference if it is)
2)Office Mobile 2007 (I have Office 2k7 on my vista system and i jeep forgetting to change the save format)
Is there anyway to get round these?
Thanks In Advance
I suggest you install Black Dymond (WM6 Black 3.5). its found here: http://www.wmblack.info
Be patient since the site is getting bombarded at the moment.
It has Office 2k7.....you dont need Windows Mobile Update.....you really dont.
thanks alot for that, can i ask what you think of farias test rom?

Windows Mobile 5 to Mobile 6

Hi Guys
I am new to windows mobile, bought an O2 XDA Mini s recently and its great fr what i use it for, however i wanted to get a bigger memory card to put in it and bought a 4gb one
Seems that i didnt check and the Mini s wont read the card - someone said that its because Windows Mobile 5 will not read anything above 2gb, however windows mobile 6 will
So my question is, How do i change mine from Windows 5 to Windows 6 - where do i get the software from, is it easy to do for a novice ( i have some idea of computers, but dont know if this is the same ) - also os it specific to the device, or is it a general program ?
Also, the only reason i want to change is so it reads the card, so if theres an easy ption to upgrade the windows 5 drivers or whatever then thats also fine
Thank you
Wayne
Search ????
Hi wayne !
Up to right Corner of your Screen ... there is your best Friend .... the "SEARCH" Button ...
KLICK AND USE IT !
GRTX
TOggER
And that just brings up Thousands of threads of which none seem to be related to what i am looking for and dont answer the questions
Like do i need a specific windows mobile 6 for my XDA, or is it the same for all phones
Where is best to get the program from
and is it as simple as instaling a program on a PC ?
If i am using the search wrong please feel free to link to the thread i am looking for
"Like do i need a specific windows mobile 6 for my XDA, or is it the same for all phones"
you need a rom which is 100% made for your device no other would work
or if you had success putting it on would make your device a rather expensive brick
"Where is best to get the program from"
the manufactor of your device or a person who spend a good deal of time
making one suited for your device
"and is it as simple as instaling a program on a PC ?"
no not really it's mostly don in the boot loader while the device is connected
to the pc using usb and it whipes all data stored on the device
cheers for that, looks like it wot be as simple as downloading and running likei had wanted
will have to have a look around then
SDHC Drivers
Hi,
If getting your device to read higher capacity cards is the only reason you want to upgrade to WM6, then there's no need to do this. Instead, just find yourself SDHC drivers, install them on your device and that's it!
Search XDA for SDHC drivers or something, or check out my website, Downloads sections. The drivers there may or may not work for you, but I am sure XDA has a few different to choose among.

Acer n50 : Upgrading WM or install Android

Hello everyone!
I have here a quite old (well, perhaps not so "old") PDA, an Acer n50, and I'd like to improve it.
I have seen recently that great people have been able to port Android onto Windows Mobile designed PDAs and smartphones. I even have seen a youtube video guy able to start (just start) Linux on a n50 back in 2007.
So finally my question is : do you think it is possible to install/run a reasonably recent version of Android on this Acer n50? If not or if difficult, can it be possible to install/run a more recent version of Windows Mobile on it? (but honestly, I have a much greater estime towards Android ). I would also like to have some help to achieve this. I have already searched the net for this and Android's developer pages, but I have not found this kind of information or I simply got lost.
I am not a hacker. In fact, I don"t have any experience in this at all. I just know how to fiddle in the console to launch some stuff and have the least of the basics.
Here are the Acer n50's specifications :
Constructor : Acer
Screen : Backlit Color
Touch screen : Yes
Resolution : TFT LCD Screen, 65 536 colors, 240 x 300 pixels
Microprocessor / Frequency : Intel PXA272 at 312 MHz
Operating System : Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition
Memory : 128 Mo de RAM, 64 Mo de ROM
Wireless connection : IrDA, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 802.11b
Audio/vidéo functionnalities : Audio system with integrated speaker and microphone, headset plug
Integrated basic applications : Microsoft Pocket Outlook, Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, MSN Messenger, Windows Media Player 9, Internet Explorer, Calculator, File Explorer, Microsoft ActiveSync 3.7.1, Pictures, Games
Extension port : Accepts SD cards, MMC, CompactFlash
Power : Lithium-ion polymer rechargeable battery
Dimensions (l x p x h) in mm : 120 x 70 x 17,4 mm
Weight in grams : 150 g
Thank you by advance for your help and far by advance.... your patience.
64mb ram is too little for windows mobile 6.5 but someone just did the impossible so you might ask them to cook one for you providing they have the hardware.

Acer n50 never got WM5 upgrade, so there is NO chance for any upgrade from WM2003SE.
To cook a WM6.5 ROM for a device at least WM5 ROM is required as they share almost the same kernel.
There are several posts on the net in french and english about this WM5 upgrade from Acer for n50. But the download link to it seems blocked now by login restrictions or dead links.
Up to now, the up-to-date repository for Acer n50 is this : ftp.support.acer-euro.com/handheld/n50/ there is no rom in there so right now there is no upgrade in fact.
So, as the upgrade for n50 was just vapor or has disappeared mysteriously, is there a way I could install WM5 (through a rom or whatever way that can be possible) over WM2003SE? I have read some people would try this without being sure if it is possible.
By the way, do you think it can also be possible to have the system in french in 5 or 6.5 in someway?
Thank you for your help.
I think that Acer n50 WM5 ROM never existed or maybe Acer made it, but never released it.
As there is no WM5 ROM for n50, there's nothing you can do.
ROMs are device specific, so that means you can't use any other device ROM.
System in french would only be possible if there would be a WM5 ROM.
All right so all possibilities are getting restrained then.
So, two last questions :
Could there be a way for me to install Windows Mobile 5 on this Acer (I guess not otherwise you would already have told me)? It looks weird that people are able to cook WM6.x and not WM5...
Can it be possible to install a version of Android on this PDA?
Too bad it cannot be possible to try to improve this device like it could be for some little bit old computers...

People are able to cook WM6.x because they have a WM5 to use as base. That means if device does not have a WM5, there is no chance for a cooked WM6.x ROM.
You must find a WM5 ROM for n50, that's your only chance.

Basically it's possible, but someone must make it. But I don't think that it will ever happen.
All right then, thank you for your answers.
