Hi,
I have successfully upgraded my O2 XDA Orbit to WM6 but I am finding that the gprs keeps connecting. It is my understanding that this does not cost me unless it is downloading data.
How can I check which program keeps bringing up the gprs connection and how can I measure the data volume transmitted?
regards
Gary
Hi Gary,
It could be Quick gps, Windows update or settings within your Orbit email account's that are triggering this problem. You need to switch off automatic updates within Quick GPS and Windows update and ensure that you havn't set your email to send and receive every X amount of minutes.
Your Orbit should have come with an "SPB traffic monitor" disk that monitors GPRS traffic - try installing it. If not, I use "Efficasoft smartphone GPRS traffic monitor" which cost about £3 for the registered version.
Mail back if you require more information.

Hi,
Similar to the person above, I'm having problems with my MDA Vario iii - I'd be very grateful for any help.
About 1 or 2 weeks ago my MDA Vario iii started to try to connect for no reason to GPRS. It would connect, and then I'd have to disconnect myself. Since then, it's been doing it more and more often, and now whenever I use the machine, browsing files, writing texts, even if the alarm rings, it will attempt to connect. And it can no longer successfully connect (even when I try to make it connect eg by opening internet explorer); it will just attempt to connect, seemingly fail, re-attempt, on and on and on. This makes it unusable, really. And I've noticed that often, just before it attempts this, a small envelope in a tray with an arrow appears in the bar at the top of the screen, and notification flashes up at the bottom of the screen, as though I have a text or something. The only way to stop these attempts are to put my phone in flight mode. I've downloaded nodata, and that stops the connection attempts, but I'm still getting the Notification flashes and the envelope sign very often.
I've tried the above suggestions, regarding GPS etc. I can't understand what has caused this problem, nor why it's getting worse. Thank you!

Upgraded from Xda II to Xda IIs end January and initially WLAN worked fine, but no GPRS. Went though process of creating GPRS connection (with O2 Support) and now cannot get IE to connect through WLAN. It always tries GPRS! Has anyone experienced this and/or got a solution?
Mike,
You will need to give us some more info on your settings.
If its an O2 unit with original firmwware if you back stuff up try a hard reset to get default settings back and ensure GPRS works then add the WLAN.
I live in Caldecote just outside Cambridge if you get really stuck we could meet up and you can try and copy my settings and check your SIM has GPRS enabled using mine that kind of thing.
Cheers Wayne
Many thanks Wayne. I'll do a backup and hard reset (with trembling hand no doubt) and see where I get to before getting back to you. Many thanks for the offer of help. I'm in Barrington, so it's not a million miles to come to talk if necessary.
you might already know this mike and if so at least it may be of help to others.
if your gprs connection is active then it doesn't matter wheather the wireless lan is on or off, internet explorer will always connect to gprs.
switch off gprs by clickiing on (in my case O2) your service providers icon and if "mobile web" is highlighted then click on it to switch it off.
Thanks, but I'd tried that and more. Eventually, as Wayne suggested, I did the dreaded hard reset and restored everything from scratch. I now have WLan working on my home LAN, but as I have such lousy GSM/GPRS coverage here I haven't yet tried to see if the GPRS side is now going to work. That's for tomorrow and where I started in the first place when I found it wasn't working! :?
Thank everyone for the suggestions.
Hello Mike
I had the same problem, and after thorough search I found the solution:
start->settings->connections -> advanced
select networks : both drop-down boxes are set to
"my work network"
This prevents the automatic gprs connections.
If you want gprs you can use the wireless manager
(start->programs->wireless manager)
and there tap the red gprs icon
In other words RTFM....

Having just purchased the XDA2s and had a go at operating it today, there are a few querys that i would like answering please.
1) How do you disconnect from the GPRS internet, always seems connected, is this costing me when connected dont want a massive bill ?
2) Is the Spb GPRS Monitor installed on the device or will I need to install it with the disc provided ?
3) Signed up to a Data only tariff 36Mb a month, how much internet usage does this allow for general browsing?
I know they may seem easy questions but been a new user of the XDA I would be very greatful if they could be answered.
Thanking you Bandari
To force a disconnect with GPRS, hold down the End key at the Today screen.
Spb GPRS Monitor is a good program to have, but I have unlimited GPRS for $19.99/month with Cingular here in the US, so I don't care how much I use.
Just happened to check last month's bill and it showed that I downloaded 110MB.
Thanks
How much Data usage do you use to total 110MB, just as a rough estimate (is it a few hours browsing a day)
Disconnecting GPRS
To disconnect hold down the red phone buton for 3 seconds or better still download GB Soft Tweak fron here. http://www.gb-soft.cz/xdaii/product_gprs_tweak_en.htm A disconnect option appears when you tap connections.
Thanks Rick
Will try the download, obviously the XDA has been connected whilst I have been unable to disconnect, will I have been charged for this?
Also cant find the GPRS settings in my programs what are they under, do I need to download them?
A good way to limit the MBs consumption is to not display the images while browsing.
You can stay connected as long as you want, I believe. You will not use much megas just for being connected.
As an example, I use MSN messenger instead of SMS as much as I can. The cost of an SMS is huge compared to the cost of an Instant message of the same amount of characters...
My two cents.
thanks for that
any idea where the Spb GPRS Monitor is on the device, do I have to connect to the USB port and transfer from the disc?
also at present cant make or recieve calls only got the XDA yesterday but, must be connected because Internet is working but no calls, I dial the number then it cuts off after 2-3 seconds?
Any ideas ???????
Not sure what you mean about the GPRS settings. If you haven't yet configured GPRS access then it's START/SETTINGS/CONNECTIONS TAB/CONNECTIONS ICON/MANAGE EXISTING CONNECTIONS/NEW enter a name (any name), select a modem Cellular Line (GPRS), Access Point name is provided by your phone company ("internet" for Vodafone), User Name "web" (again for Vodafone), password "web" (Vodafone) click finish. You can also access connections by tapping the signal strength icon on top left of screen.
Not sure about cost but sounds like you've set your account for a specific ammount of download. You don't in the case anything for being connected - only for downloading pages.
Don't know my left from right - the icon is top right, not left - next to speaker icon.

I called up O2 about this very thing when I got mine. I couldn't get the thing disconnetced from GPRS without turning on Flight Mode! Holding down the red telephone button used to disconnect it but it would immediately come up with the "Connecting" box once again. I had to hit cancel several times before it got the message to stop connecting!
O2 said that the phone can stay connected to GPRS and you will not be charged unless you are transferring data by browsing the web or whatever.
Hi All,
I just found out this information regarding Orange and collecting email through a GPRS connection, and thought I would share it with our community.
I've been using an Orange SPV M1000, but on an O2 contract, set up the email with the O2 details and had no problem picking up my emails via GPRS in any country.
I then changed last week, to an Orange SPV M2000 on an Orange contract, set it up to pick up my emails, but when I hit the send/recieve button, it just sat there saying 'Connecting...' until I cancelled the connection manually.
Called Orange support today and they told me this was a known problem with the M1000 and M2000, that it was a good sign it was just saying 'Connecting...' which meant my settings were correct. What they told me to do was to leave it sitting for 30 to 40 seconds whilst it said 'Connecting...' manually disconnect, then wait 2 or 3 minutes and try it again and it would all be ok and connect/send and recieve straight away.
Mmm... I thought it sounded odd, but would give it a try, well it worked exactly as the support guy said !
So, why didn't it work like that when I'd been trying for 2 days to get it to work? Well, out of habit, I always switched GPRS off after I'd tried to connect, and having tested various scenario's, it seems like the first time you connect to the Orange email server, GPRS switches on, does some sort of handshaking with the network and so long as you DO NOT DISCONNECT the GPRS connection, it connects and sends/recieves instantly the next time you connect. If you do switch GPRS off after sending and recieving, it has to go through the handshaking process again, where you have to manually disconnect after 30 - 40 seconds, then all is well again.
BTW - My email was a non-Orange POP3 account, but I think the same would apply if it was any email account as its the GPRS/email handshaking that causes the issue, that plus me switching off GPRS  Plus I'm pretty sure this is specific to using the Orange email/GPRS as my M1000 didn't exhibit this behaviour when connecting to the O2 network.
Hope this is of some use.
All the best,
Andy (Diesel).
Hello all.
Here are all of the known problems that I am having. with WM6 2.01.
(1) Icons on top (connection bubble) never change with the exception of ActiveSync. 3G icon constantly stays on even if connected through WiFi. Shutting phone off still shows Cingular bars as if connected. (Known issue)
(2) Soft button configuration changes do not stick. If I change the programs associated with them, it does nothing.
Also, today screen shows Calendar and ActiveSync as soft key programs, although programs are actually Calendar and Contacts. (Its all jacked up!)
(3) I cannot connect to the internet with my celluar service. It is as if there are no settings installed. The bottom of IE says "Connecting ... 0 KB." Then I get a message saying "Cannot connect with current connection settings. To change your settings, tap Settings."
I have tried turning on/off, soft reset, etc., but have had no luck
---I have searched the board for an answer to #3, and I have found many people who have similar problems (does not work after 30 min, soft reset will fix), but I do not remember seeing anyone whose settings have completely dropped.
Can anybody shed any light into any of these 3 problems? I really do not use Bluetooth, so I haven't tried anything with it yet. But all other problems I have had, I have been able to fix by myself.
Thanks,
Kangle

Did you put your connection settings back in after you upgraded to WM6??
No, but I didnt save them.
My Wi-Fi is working fine, but I had to config those. On other updates I had done prior, my 3G connection was fine without having to setup settings.
If you have not already done this, you have to go under connections and set up your providers settings. To enter proper settings go to Start/Settings/Connections Add a new modem connection. Enter any name you want for the NAME ( example "Cingular ISP") and make sure that under "select a modem" tab, "Cellular Line (GPRS, 3G) is sellected. Click next access point name can be what ever you want to call the provider connection (Example "wap.cingular" or "isp.cingular"). And the rest I can not help you with untill we know who your provider is. I am sure if you let us know what provider you have, some one here can post the settings you need to have.
Hope this helps or at least gets you pointed in the right direction.
Awesome. Thanks for the help.
I am to the point where I need to enter user name, password, and domain. I wonder if I am going to need to call Cingular to find out some of that info (password).
Can anybody help me out with those settings?
Thanks,
Kangle
see https://www.cingular.com/support/deviceConfig.do?content=KB71396.html
but, if you had used the "SEARCH" button you would already have found this...
Go to https://www.cingular.com/support/deviceConfig.do?content=KB71396.html for the settings.
Now I have a quick question that I need to have cleared up. When I connect onlince with my CIngular 8525 it always connects via GPRS/EDGE and not 3G. I do not see a 3G icon come up. Is this becasue there is no coverage at my home? Or did I mess up something?
I am using:
LVSW WM6 RUU_Hermes_WWE_3.30.0.1 [FIXED]
Hard SPLv7
I used the cingular setting cab found from the WIKI
I am using radio 1.40.30.00
Band setting under phone are set to auto

This would be difficult to answer, since we don't know where your home is. May I recommnd you visit THIS LINK
Hi Y´all!
Tried searching for this but no cigar so here goes:
I´m having periodic trouble maintaining a stable GPRS connection.
For example i start Opera & open a web page. GPRS connection is established. So far so good.
Then the site is kept open for perhaps 15 minutes without utilizing a link (i haven´t clocked it but it´s in that general vicinity).
Then i use a link, and get connection error, or perhaps minimize the browser and chek for new mail, and get sync. error.
In any case it is clear that the GPRS connection i dead. Then i go to the connection center and shut down the data connection (which indicates green - up&running).
Then i restart the GPRS connection, Either from activating a weblink or checking for mail or pretty much anything else that depends on the connection.
Then BINGO... GPRS is up and running again for another 15 minutes or so.
The fact that i had (and lived with) the same problem on my old Kaiser leads me to think that this may be about a setting somewhere in WinMO??
Is the connection perhaps "hibernating" if it isn´t used for a period??
And mainly: Does someone know howto fix it??
Perhaps i should add that i live in a small town in the arctic part of the world and we have no 3G/HDSPA coverage, There is only the GPRS connection. At home i use my private Wi-Fi link wich is humming along fine&nicely.
Please help

It's like the xDSL connections that shut down after some time of inactivity. In a normal xDSL connection you have a possibility in the equipment of selecting an "Always ON" option that sends random packets to keep the Internet session from being shut down automatically by the BBRAS/DSLAM/RADIUS equipment.
In terms of mobile world I do not know if exist a similar way of doing it.
