bricked ipaq 3950 - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

I tried to upgrade my ipaq 3950 to wm2003 English version from wm2002 Chinese version and something went wrong so now I can only get into what I understand is called "parrot": Red background with Compaq in and Serial or USB when I connect w/ usb cable. It is v0.48. I've been trying to use mtty.exe to load a backup rom I downloaded off the net but every time I use the command lnb rom.bin it says "start download" then waits for a few minutes, then says "Fail to synchronize with the host". I know I should just buy a new pda but I don't have the cash. Any help would be appreciated.

Unbrick H3950
Well, here is what worked for me. Get the PDA in bootloader mode again ( that is the mode where the screen is red and says USB or Serial ). Connect to your computer via USB sync cable. Then you want to run the Ipaq Softpaq again to install your WM2003. It should start installing, leave it alone until it says that it is complete. Don't wiggle it or even touch it, because sometimes those Ipaq sync cable connectors get to the point where they will loose connection if moved.

My Pda 2k device i tryed to upgrade it from 2003 SE to 2k5 after pressing update the device restarted gived me a gray screen and typed on it seril and at the buttom v2.02 now i cant open the device each time i reset or heard rest this is the only screen appears to me i cant even connect to activsync please i need your help what to do to get my device back, this error message i recived (usb device not recognized aslo active sync didnt recognize it)
i need to add a point the device is not working on the USP connection as it have a problem only serial port to connect with the pc
i'm so new here please help me
not to worry.. you can perform a hard reset of your 2k3 version "power+reset" to get you back to at least a working device.. I have been through this and have had this happen to me as well.. try entering bootloader again "power+record+reset" and dock it fairly quickly and it should change to USB on the screen and PC recognize it... also for anyone reading this.. I would highly recommend plugging your cradle into a 5v power supply as I can only imagine most of the bricked BAs are probably due to a computer freezing and/or the PC shutting down power to the USB port only for a fraction of a second and hosing the flash up.
THx Man i will try i hop this will work

USB Device Not Recognised on Bootloader

I have a problem. My Exec is stuck on the bootloader screen. All I see is Serial at the top, and v1.00 at the bottom.
When I connect my exec via USB, the screen continues to say Serial (rather than switching to USB) and the PC I connect to 'installs' the device as 'unknown device' in device manager.
I've seen mention of the problem elsewhere on the site, but the only solution I can find seems to be to keep trying, and eventually it's recognised. So far, after three days of trying, it has not been recognised.
I am aware of Buzz tool to get the device out of bootloader mode, but that required a connection to be established, which at the moment, I can't do.
Has anyone got any experience of this, or any ideas as to what's causing this, or how this can be fixed? I have tried uninstalling the 'unknown device' from device manger, restarting the PC (and hard reset of the Exec) then reconnecting, but the same thing happens every time.
Any ideas would be appreciated, as I'm currently staring at a rather expensive paper weight.
Try this it shld work

This is based on my experience with two UNis..one Exec and other JASJAR..both had same problem...this is how I solved :
-Put yr device in bootloader Mode
-Disable USB in Active Sync
-Now connect woth USB cable and open mtty utility
-Select the "WESUSB... " port
-You shall see a blank white screen..press Enter to get "USB>"
-Then type ( as BUzz has informed) set 14 0
(here I wud like to inform that after doing the above I did not get success so I typed set 14 10,then set 14 9 for two three times)
-Then I ran the ROM Upgrade directly(After enbabling the USB)
-I then followed the procedure as informed on the COngratulations Screen that is hold the two "-" buttons and soft reset and then pressed 0
-I got them back to normal..
I hope this helps to all my friends...Pls feel free..pls do not trouble our Buzz..he might be busy in inventing something more to our devices

Just noticed your user name, I was a big Amiga fan a few years back, still fire up Amiga forever occasionally on my PC when I feel the need.

Try it with a different USB cable or in a different USB port (don't go through a hub and if you've been using a laptop then try it on a desktop PC since some laptops have hubs built into them). If that doesn't work then you're out of luck as your Universal isn't detecting that you've connected to your PC and its time to send it in for repair.
Thanks Niketkumar - unfortunately it's the step before your suggestion kicks in thats the problem - the device won't connect to the PC, so when using mtty WESUSB..... isn't an option, only COM1 and COM2.
Shuflie, I've tried with three separate USB cables on a laptop and desktop (neither through a hub, and the same device has worked fine on both laptop and desktop before).
I fear a trip to the doctors is in order ...
Very frustrating because the PC sees a device, but installs it as unknown device. Anyone know if theres a Windows CE device driver that I could try and install as an overide (i.e. in device manager on the PC go to update driver and browse to a WinCE.inf or equivalent?)
Failing this, has anyone got any clue what needs to be fixed? Or how much it might cost?
i am stuck on the same problem and wondering the forum for almost 3 days now with no luck.... please help my device is in boot loader mood but not turning the serial to USB ......... please HELP.......

Please follow the steps:
1. Plug in ur usb cable in bootloader mode while it is showing 'serial' and version 'x.xx'.
2. Soft reset by pressing Backlight+power+reset pin WHILE KEEPING THE USB CABLE CONNECTED
3. your phone will now reboot into 'usb' mode. Don't remove the usb cable yet.
4. Remove the Memory card while keeping the usb cable still connected and VOILA,your pc starts recognising your phone as Microsoft usb sync.
5. Do whatever you want to do now (upgrade)
Hope it solves the problem now.
Press thanks if it does.
Something else to try
Having had a few issues with my G3 Uni, I've been through my fare share of Uni bootloader issues. When I find that I can't get the 'serial' to go to 'USB', I normally find it's because I haven't taken the memory card or the SIM card out (usually the memory card).
Make sure your memory card is out, then try to enter the bootloader and see if this cures it. If it does, then use mtty and the command 'set 14 0'
This tells it to reboot on reset. if you were to use 'set 14 1' it would go back to the bootloader on reset.

Stucked to "Serial" bootloader mode

Hi all,
I was trying to upgrade my Qtek9000 with an official ROM Updater, but my device went immediately into the Serial bootloader mode and I've not been able to do nothing to run out from this mode...
I've tryied the solutions suggested in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=290234 without any luck...
The problem is that neither Mtty nor the UNI_exitbootloader tool are able to connect to USB.
I'm using no usb hub, I'm running on a Dell Precision M90 notebook, I've disabled USB connection in Activesync (4.2.0) and also tryied with a pc without activesync installed.
Any idea?
Thanks
Paolo
Are you on XP or Vista, and what version of AS/WMDC do you have?
Hi,
I'm running Xp, ActveSync is 4.2.0, don't know what WMDC is sorry, can you please explain?
Don't worry about WMDC - it's only relevant if you have Vista.
Are you using the proper cable that came with the Universal? Some cables don't have all the pins wired. That (or a broken USB port) would explain why your Universal isn't going to USB mode when you plug in the USB cable. Have you looked carefully to see if it changes from saying "Serial" to "USB" at the top of the Bootloader screen when you plug in the cable?
If it does change to "USB", I would try upgrading to ActiveSync 4.5 - go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/activesync/activesync45.mspx
Make sure you disable USB Connnections in the Connection settings before plugging in your Universal. Then try flashing the CE ROM again.
Good luck
BTW did you try doing a hard reset to get out of bootloader (both soft keys and then the reset button, then select 0).
Good advice, especially with upgrading to AS 4.5, it's a full release now on Microsoft Update site, and I have a feeling the WM6 ROMs may require it... Good luck with it, keep us posted.
Ok, thanks all!
This morning I connected the PDA to my office's PC with it's original cable and it instantly switched to USB mode...
So, I launched the upgrade and it's now in progress... let's hope!!!
It might really be a cable problem, yesterday night I tried with 2 different PC and a not original cable (I think it's my camera one...)
Thanks a lot, by now... I'll let you know own this story will end...
Ok, new ROM is up and running!
Thanks all!
Bye
Paolo
Good stuff.

i780 ROM flashing problem

When I try to flash a new ROM using the Mirage updater, after I connect the phone to the usb cable, Mirage show me the message " PDA Device not found". I have installed all samsung modem drivers, i have no firewall or antivirus program and still does not work to flash a new ROM. This behaviour appeared after I flashed the i780_DXHC4_Rev12 ROM. If anybody had this problem, please advice me what to do next. thanks
no experts here?
no this happen. Are you using XP?
First and only time when I succeded to flash the ROM (DXHC4 version), it was on win2k3 standard..Since then, I have tried to flash the ROM on various OS ( vista, xp, win2k3, win2k8..) with the same result each time: "PDA Device not found"...
Make sure to connect the phone to the USB cable when the phone is completely OFF. (take out battery and put it back in)
with the turned out phone connected to the cable, press DETECT,
and only then power up your phone.
I know some instructions tell you to go into bootloader mode, but I found that this is enough to successfully flash my device.
Make sure you run on XP and not on Vista.
Hope this helps.
thank you for your advice..unfortunately, it does not work also..after I press Detect and turn on the phone, Mirage send me the same message: "PDA Device not found"...if you can help me with other instructions, i would appreciate

Does your device succeed in connecting to the computer using ActiveSync?
Try disabling ActiveSync USB connection or altogether.
If you only want to install the PDA part try removing the USB modem drivers,
you don't need them for PDA only.
Try a different USB port maybe, Or maybe another cable.
I'm at a loss here...
Hi on this forum too!
You need to already have an active activesync relationship with the device.
I can make file transfer and PC sync with the phone.
I tried every USB port to flash the phone. But nothing works, only 'PDA Device not found' message. I think there is no solution for this problem...

u have to load the modem driver which is for i600... i had the same issue but as soon as u load the modem driver it works fine..
and u have to take out the batt and put back the batt then hold enter and Fn button while u press the power button.. and hold till the device is booted in emergency mode... then connect your USB cable..
nothing works...
Try to update your usb drivers...
gOOndu is right you must have the correct USB driver to recognize your phone. This is not the modem driver. You can test this by disabling Active sync USB connections and plugin your phone. If it has the right driver it should state hardware found (name of your device) and then hardware installed and ready for use. If you get a hardware not recognized then the driver is not correct.
Hope this helps you.
The problem is not with the OS drivers, which recognizes my hardware device. Also, I am able to make transfers from the device to the desktop and viceversa. The problem is with the Mirrage Updater, after I press Detect and plug in the device, it can not see my pda anymore ( PDA Device not found message). The only time when I was able to flash my device ( with Mirrage) was when I upgraded to DXHC4 version. Since then, Mirrage can not find my pda anymore, altough I use the same (operating) system as when I succesfully flashed DXHC4...

Hi guys,
I am trying to flash a ROM following the steps in the first post of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=388067 . I tried on Windows XP, Vista, 7 without any positive results. I installed the Samsung i600 drivers, started mirage, loaded the bin file in the PDA section, pressed detect, started the device using Fn+Enter+ON key, but mirage kept saying "PDA device not found". I tried the above steps in different orders,no luck whatsoever. I have the following 2 questions:
1. booting the phone in DETECT mode means that you get the message "Emergency mode - You must push Detect BUtton of the download application befor you connect the usb port".
2. Do you have another STEP-BY-STEP guide on how to do this? Or is there another tool besides Mirage (which in my opinion is quite old)?
Thanks a million.
Which USB connection do you use? Front panel? Use one which is connected directly to the mainboard (on the back).
There is an i780 flashing guide available. I cannot find (or post) the direct link but it acknowledges this original post.
I spent several hours at the weekend trying to find a way of flashing my phone including installing virtual PC, etc, etc.
Eventually I found this to my relief and it worked for me in Win7:

I too am having real trouble in getting Mirage to detect my Phone in Emergency Mode!
Windows Mobile device center connects fine but that's all,
for that I used the Samsung_USB_Drive_MCCI_4.34_WHQL_v3.4

In device manager/Mobile devices it says Samsung MITs USB Sync
Could someone plz post i600 drivers that have been used successfully in ROM flashing the i780

HP Compaq 3950 ROM issue

Hi, I got this HP Compaq 3950 Pocket PC for free because something is wrong with it ! The previous owner said the OS was in french, he tried to put english ROM in it and something gone wrong, now the PPC only shows the boot screen with "Serial" on top and thats it, nothing else.
I am trying to write the latest HP english rom available for the 3950 using this method here http://www.kidsmoneylife.com/2009/09/how-to-change-language-on-ipaq-h3900-series/ but after i put the command in the MTTY after a while it says that cannot establish connection with host or something like that. I am not sure what that means, the device shows USB on top of the screen and Serial if I disconnect the cable from the USB.
I haven't tried with serial connection yet, I don't have a serial port on my laptop.
Any ideeas or guides I should follow ? Didn't found out much on Google !
Thanks
